Adam Lavine has accused American Idol of covering up gay contestants' sexuality.
The Voice judge claimed that he believes the reality show refuses to allow its gay competitors to publicly discuss their sexuality while on the musical contest.
"What's always pissed me off about Idol is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken," Levine told Out magazine. "C'mon. You can't be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break. You can't hide basic components of these people's lives."
Levine went on to praise his own musical competition for being progressive. "The fact that The Voice didn't have any qualms about being completely open about it is a great thing," Levine insisted.
The Maroon 5 singer also told the magazine that the two talent competitions, which have different formats, appeal to different types of viewers, and acknowledged that American Idol is a "cultural institution".
"I can't f**k with American Idol," he added. "It's a cultural institution. On The Voice, we just care about a different list of things. It's for a different type of person, I guess."

I went to an advanced screening tonight. Just got back from watching it and it was better than I expected.
we actually did sign a paper that says we can't talk about it,but I will say it's a mix of Harsh Times, Drive, Cops, and Training Day. Very emotional,funny, and realistic. Definitely go watch it,out next year. :)

"Will everyone stop thinking that dude is gay? Seriously guys. How immature is it of the media to perceive this guy -- it has to be because of Brokeback, right? I've known this dude forever. He's one of my oldest friends, and it's very weird that they have this -- it's very immature and infantile the way they treat his whole situation. If him hanging out with his bros means he's gay, it's like further perpetuating that weird homophobia that exists in our culture, which is just stupid. So, yeah, he's my buddy.
