Why Ricky Matters (to me... and maybe a few other boys)

By Lorenzo Herrera y Lozano

March 30, 2010

There’s been a lot of commotion regarding Ricky Martin’s recent coming out statement on his official website. As with most things in life these days, I learned about the news on Facebook. So, I immediately posted about the news as well and quickly joined in the jubilee of queerness and pranced about the office like a middle school-aged boy who accidently touched hands with his classroom crush. I even committed the blasphemy of comparing the news to that of Health Care Reform and the release of Apple’s iPad (insert sound of angel choir here).

And then, of course, there was the storm of cattiness that followed the news. As a queer Xicano, I admit that sarcasm is built into my genetic code. The survivor of four Christian-themed religions and 500+ years of white supremacist occupation, I find humor, irony and disbelief in most things. Still, yesterday I just wanted to celebrate.

I agree that the fact that Ricky is gay is not all that shocking. Queer men and not long speculated or asserted that he shook his bon bon far too well to be straight. Plus, for us jotos/maricones/patos, there was the added benefit of dreaming him up queer, which somehow put us that much closer to his arms.

Still, as the catty remarks continue, as people boast about how they knew and think he should have done this 10 years ago, or sassy queens dismiss the news as inconsequential, I say, look beyond our borders (geographic, cultural, and age-based) and take a minute to honor the fact that for many, Ricky’s coming out is groundbreaking, perhaps even life-saving.

Ricky Martin

April 29, 2010

So Ricky was doing more than living la vida loca; he was, in fact, a loca. To the trained eye, this is just confirmation that our gaydar runs on more than hormones and dreams.

Hormones, dreams and cattiness aside, I challenge the ungleeful remarks about Ricky’s coming out.

As with most performers who began as Spanish-language artists, Ricky began over 10 years ago. The Barbara Walters interview (assuming it was Barbara, I can never tell who is behind that cloud of light) did have me on the edge of my teenage self, hoping he’d come out and proclaim his gayness, but it wasn’t his beginning. Ricky’s career began decades ago.

Long before the Latin Explosion, which was more of a Latin Spark, Ricky had left his imprint on the Spanish pop scene of the late 80’s and early to mid-90’s. Back when Thalía and Paulina were still artists and relevant, before Gloria Trevi’s traumatic (for her and her fans) imprisonment in Brazil, and before Alejandra Guzmán would be hospitalized for too much botox on her behind, there was a cultural movement in Latin America.

As a pre-teen growing up in a rural town of 300 in northern México, Thalía, Paulina, Gloria, Alejandra and Ricky were my window into another world. Their performances pushed, albeit at times gently and censured, the boundaries of repressive cultural norms. From flowers wrapped around a microphone to songs about teen pregnancy and abortion, these young performers were resisting and embodying another realm of cultural possibilities. Ricky gave boys the excuse (and perhaps reason) to shake our hips in ways that would otherwise be condemned as obscene.

The dismissal of Ricky’s coming out seems to be rooted in an U.S.-centric perspective where we have the opportunity to stop celebrating any queer image on TV and offer our critique. There is so much gayness these days that we can spend our days and dissertations balking at how a character isn’t gay enough, is too gay, is too white, etc. And although we don’t actually have the type of representation GLAAD and I would like to see, we have a whole lot more than we did in México in 1992 (except, of course, Ricky gently caressing his long hair on stage… oh, and Locomía).

I am not critiquing the fact that we spend so much time criticizing queer portrayals in the media. To the contrary, I am celebrating the fact that we can. In fact, I’d go further and ask why queer people of color media performance and productions are so weak, lame and superficial. Having once curating a queer people of color cultural arts program, I know we can do better.

What I am critiquing is that our criticisms of Ricky’s coming out has us falling into the pitfall of imagining and defining all things queer through a U.S. lens. I even joked about the fact that he used the term “homosexual” to define himself. And now, in retrospect I find that identifying as a “fortunate homosexual” was much more powerful than a simple “gay.”

Perhaps for the jaded queen living in urban U.S., the oversaturation of gayness in the media has deemed Ricky insignificant and worthy of our dismissal. For that frightened and confused 12 year old in rural Chihuahua, it’s monumental.

My coming out process was stumped by the fact that I could not even imagine my queerness, let alone live it. At the time, the saturation of gayness was mostly strictly white. It wasn’t until queer brown men like Jaime Cortez and Emanuel Xavier fearlessly (or perhaps fearfully) exposed their work and their bodies to the sun of public criticism, that I was able to imagine myself.

Whether U.S. fags approve or not, Ricky is a prominent figure here, and more importantly, in Latino América. Ricky’s coming out makes it possible for young boys in countless homes to imagine themselves as something other than confused.

For this, I say to Ricky: gracias. And, you know where to find me.

I don't believe Jake was such a loser in school.
Michelle is strong and smart.

I'm talking about school versions of them. Michelle was not strong, she hid in bathrooms and the kids bullied her.

Really? What a twat.

Yes, really.

Although Jake being the class clown and good looking to boot, would have been a magnet too. :)

Of course :)

So?

Michelle Williams, a small town girl, was legally emancipated from her parents at the age of 15. I'm proud of her.

Wondering what qualities he looks for in a woman?
A long, thick dick?

Cool, mysterious, brooding type. Chick magnet, and he probably made the best of it.

I think both, Heath and Jake, were popular and had many friends (hangers on). As adults it is/was the same. Isn't it?

Anonymous said...

Me too. :) And she got Heath.

Anonymous said...

Yes. The truly were a great team - complemented each other well, onscreen (wow!) and off.

There's truly nothing more appealing and fun than a man who can make you laugh. :)

Heath was described by a teacher as the quiet guy who was sitting in the last row.
*swoon*

*double swoon* :) Yeah, for me, when a person is unaware of, or even slightly uncomfortable with, their own magnetism, it just makes that person even more appealing. Genuine modesty is a turn-on :)

She only emancipated from her parents on a legal aspect, to be able to work for more hours on set in her teen years.
Her dad kept sending money to her and the mom said she was constantly by her side. She was emancipated only in papers.

And let's better don't start to talk how she "got" Heath...

"small town girl"??? Her family is wealthy and very high in the social scale, at least, they were before Mr.Williams had a bad enconteur with the law.
She is not Madonna, coming to NY with ten bucks in the pocket before making it big.

OTHO, she is one of a very few who really can act and became famous without being overexposed on magazines and talk shows. That's something to respect,IMO.

I wonder if Jake watched TDK and what he thought of it. Someone should ask him that instead of what he looks for in a woman (lmao).

I agree - because we don't know how she got Heath.

I agree - because we don't know how she got Heath.

She got Heath by spreading her legs a few days into shooting BBM in his trailer and by getting pregnant approximately six months later after following him to Australia for Candy shoot.
So, yes, like someone said, smart girl. ;)

Didn't Michelle follow Heath to Venice too, when he filmed Casanova?

Yes, that would be much better question, especially because I do believe that Heath actually had a lot of the qualities that Jake looks for ;) :)

Anonymous said...

She did. After BBM he shot Casanova in Venice (she followed him there) then he did Candy in Australia (where she followed him too and got pregnant during Candy shoot).
They "knew" each other about 6 months before she got pregnant and he did 3 movies during that time!!!LOL. Now wonder it fell apart so quickly.

Supposedly (according to Gilliam) Heath realized they are mismatched even during BBM promo time.

I was just checking out The CW's fall schedule (unfortunately OTH is still there) and saw they are remaking Nikita.

Cast List: Maggie Q as Nikita, Lyndsy Fonseca as Alex, Shane West as Michael, Aaron Stanford as Birkhoff, Ashton Holmes as Thom, Tiffany Hines as Jaden, with Melinda Clarke as Amanda and Xander Berkeley as Percy

Why is this interesting? Well... Anyone remember this?

Inside the party, Holmes and West "were in a dark corner of the bar making out," an eyewitness tells us.

What kind of making out?

"They had a quick but passionate kiss and then a few pecks directly after. It was clear they tried to make it as brief as possible, but that they didn't want to stop."

Caliente!

A lot of very successful people were "wallflowers" or misfits or "losers" as a lot of you people say in high school. Heath was probably popular but unlike Jake, was friendly with EVERYONE including the losers that so many of you mock (like you're still in high school). Jake comes across as way too conceited and image-obsessed to be friendly with a misfit or a loser unless something is in it for him.

Sometimes we bet on a prince riding a dark horse too. :)

I'm not exaggerating, Jake looked SOOO good in PoP (very fuckable). And he did a good acting job too.

Yep. Definitely cringe-worthy. I hope someone tells him to bring that cheesy crap down a couple notches before he does the talk shows. But I doubt it. As was noted, he knows what the fangirls like and if he can get the pathetic babbler types in the audience to scream like 13 year olds, he'll happily oblige.

And he and Simon Halls really do appear to have their heads on straight - pardon the pun :) - and their priorities in order. They are not closeted at all. That alone has to give you happiness.

Over at Box Office Mojo someone has made a list with reviews - about 88 until now, most of them are positive, much better than expected.

The London Times even raves the film and Jakes performance.

BTW - Metacritic is a much better source than Rotten Tomatoes - they have a better counting system.

ITA. And how wonderful is it that he took one of the kids to a premiere with him. Melts my heart--not that it isn't already when it comes to Bomer.

Bomer made sure from day one on White Collar that he would be able to be seen out with his family instead of hiding and pretending to be someone he isn't.

Despite the dire dialogue and patchy editing, Prince of Persia was a fast-paced, exciting, special effects-fuelled adventure romp.

The chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Arterton was disappointing at times, but they were both highly enjoyable nonetheless.

I unashamedly loved Jake as Prince Dustan. Clearly a perfect fit, physically, for the role. Undeniably charming!

And I was right - it did capture how exciting the game was. Especially the last 30 minutes. Brilliantly dazzling special effects.

Ouch! I have a feeling this critic from the UK's The Mirror didn't like Prince of Persia:

"It all looks... well, like a cheap videogame. As for the plot, it's your standard quest flick with the dagger's time-travelling properties almost entirely extraneous.

When it comes to the acting,
things are no better. Arterton's flirting with Gyllenhaal recalls Babs Windsor in a Carry On movie, and if the leading man hoped this was going to lift his career from its post-Brokeback Mountain funk,
he might at least have bothered to have looked interested.

The original videogame was a lot more fun. In fact, so is banging a rusty nail through your
big toe."

Anonymous said...

11:07, Brokeback Mountain did VERY well for a film of its kind--it also didn't have a HUGE release like PoP--you can't compare the two. BBM had a limited release but for what it did--it did VERY well.

LOL no, BBM was an indie. The production budget was 14 mil. and it made around 180 mil worldwide. Big success commercially (for its genre especially), add the critical acclaim and the impact it had on cinema and public, and all I can say is - get out of here with this comment!

Is this a blog for people who hate Jakey G because you know he's not Toothy? So much hate for the man, what he says, his movies, what he wears. The more hate you direct at Jake and wishing his movie fails just tells me you all know he's not Toothy and thats why you hate him, yes you hate Jake Gyllenhaal. If you believe Jake is toothy, why would you want him to fail? Do you think that would make him come out sooner? And if it did, what good will it be. He could always say that reverse homophobia killed my career (blogs like this one) and thats why I failed. Because my so called supporters didn't think I could pulled off a romantic/super hero lead in a movie with a woman. Jake doesn't have to act in movies based on your preference. You mean nothing to him but you are a danger to his career. This blog is the biggest argument for Toothy not to come out whomever he is. Its your fault Toothy remains in the closet.

Anonymous said...

2:23, I think you know, if you've followed Jake Gyllenhaal's career for many years, some people might get worn down by his constant flip-flopping of opinion; great speeches on tolerance and then reversals into personal distaste of homosexuality and distancing himself from the very notion. The original quote about being attracted to a man suddenly flipped on its head and denied when the going got too tough for him. Or his people.

The mere fact you refer to him as 'Jakey' indicates you think he is still a little boy on some level, which perhaps he is, or is happy for people to defend him as one.

I am not a hater but I have no real respect for 'little Hollywood boys' who need defending and who seem to hide themselves either being lots of pr or women's skirts.

If you think he's poor widdle Jake who needs defending then that's entirely your bag, I view him as a nice but equally manipulative adult who knows what he wants and how to get it. He knows how to play you and how to play every other fandom he has, well, what's left of it.

Sure sometimes he cannot do right for doing wrong but then it was his choice to go into a critical profession. You should be able to stand the heat, and clearly he does.

He is not a great actor (decent but not great) and he's not a good liar either, but he'll stick at both because it pays his bills and is all he knows. I doubt, with his accrued wealth and cotton-wool lifestyle he needs our sympathy much. And I'm sorry but from where I'm sitting he's only got himself to blame for having his foot lodged so firmly in his mouth over the years.

Anonymous said...

Its your fault Toothy remains in the closet.

Correction - It's Jake's fault he remains in the closet. He has a LOT of money and free choice.

Are you seriously suggesting that ORDINARY PEOPLE talking about him on the internet have spoiled his chances?

Get a grip, fangirl.
Actors listen to their people, they don't go round reading blogs or following gossip, they haven't time.

If Jake had the bottle to do it years ago then he should have. He didn't because he got talked out of it and money talked. THAT is the reason he didn't come out. Don't you dare blame ordinary people for his choices, you little haridan.

Oh, and the $$$$$$ machine of Hollywood has stopped him coming out.

People would have supported him YEARS ago but he chose to follow executive advice, whose golden rule is always: no gay leading men!

Maybe peple are sick of pandering to this false niceness that makes one side a lot of money, covers up truth and leaves the other side fighting social injustices still while stars creeps around on the dl.

I don't expect you to understand 2:23, you sound like a kid who wants to blame the world for one man's decisions in life. If you spent more than a day in his company you'd probably see just how controlled and rigid his life is.

And why would anyone care if Busy Phillips was there? She's a tv actor and has nothing to do with Bruckheimer or PoP

LOL have you ever seen how many TV shows Bruckheimer is a producer on?! Tons. He doesn't just involve himself in big-time movies. He is very involved in the small screen as well.

Michelle is not a lesbian. If the Busy rumor is true, they probably just fooled around. Gosling is a womanizer. He and Michelle will probably start to fuck during award season. It probably won't last more than 2 years or so.

@elle_com: Jake Gyllenhaal on His Next Movie, Love and Other Drugs http://www.elle.com/Pop-Culture/Celebrity-Spotlight/The-New-Jake-Jake-Gyllenhaal
about 24 hours ago

The New Jake: Jake GyllenhaalWe’ve seen him bare his flesh and bust taboos, but now he gets to play prince
By Joseph Hooper | May 20, 2010

There’s a moment in a young actor’s career when he starts to own his own size,” director Edward Zwick says. “When he goes from being the [love] object or the ingenue to being That Guy.” That Guy in question is Jake Gyllenhaal, who costars in Zwick’s funny-sad and very grown-up love story, Love and Other Drugs, out this Thanksgiving. Yes, some mental refocusing is in order here. Gyllenhaal has played earnest (the young model rocketeer in October Sky in 1999) and earnest and creepy (in Donnie Darko two years later). He’s been boy candy for Catherine Keener in Lovely & Amazing and Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl (“Your lips are real pouty like a woman and your eyes always look sad,” Jen memorably intones). And the one great love story on his résumé, Brokeback Mountain, has Gyllenhaal in the stereotypically feminine role of the aggrieved lover who wants more quality time with his man. Zwick says, doing his best to amp up expectations as I prepare to meet Gyllenhaal in Montreal (he’s on location shooting a sci-fi thriller, Source Code): “I think you’ll be seeing aspects of him that no one has ever seen before.”

What to make of Jake? The absurdly large hazel eyes and square-jawed visage across the table in a café in the Old Montreal historic district suggest a younger Clooney or Hamm in their masculine pulchritude. Gyllenhaal comes from a show business family—a screenwriter mother, Naomi Foner (Losing Isaiah), a director father, Stephen Gyllenhaal (Waterland), and then there’s his sister, Maggie. Three years his elder, she was the serious actor first, the distance runner in the family who was able to win attention from their film-obsessed parents at a steady rate. “I was the sprinter,” Jake says. “I had 100 meters to get what I needed to get in, so I was more of a ham, a class clown, and I continue to be, I suspect.” Hey, he played Billy Crystal’s son in City Slickers!

Elle said...

But Jake Gyllenhaal clearly was well brought up. “I don’t want to waste time having an exchange with someone where it’s just one-sided,” he says (to me, I’m pretty sure), as we sit down to breakfast, “ ’cause I’ve done that and it makes me feel like shit. I like to know a little bit about the person I’m sitting across from, ’cause I might walk out the door and get hit by a car. Or you may.”

In place of the grown-up child-actor narcissism you might expect, Gyllenhaal seems to have an aggressively beatific urge to connect with everything and everyone around him, as if he has just walked out of the ballroom at a human-potential seminar.

“That’s a real guy you had breakfast with,” Anne Hathaway says afterward. “A lot of actors only know how to be real when the camera is rolling, but Jake is unbelievably warm and open and welcoming. There’s no mistake why he’s so charming on-screen.” She should know, although in Brokeback, Gyllenhaal’s character couldn’t dance around Hathaway fast enough to wrestle with Heath Ledger in the high pines. (While Ledger and costar Michelle Williams were beginning a passionate affair, “Jake and I were geeking out over The Simpsons.”) But in Love and Other Drugs, Gyllenhaal and Hathaway take the on-screen chemistry in a distinctly hetero direction.

“I lured her to do the movie by telling her that [Brokeback] wasn’t our love story, this one should be,” he says in an admission of tactical charm. He’s a Big Pharma drug rep, she’s an artist in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, and they fall in love in a no-holds-barred sort of way, exposing at least as much flesh as Gyllenhaal did in his near-naked dance in the Gulf War sufferfest Jarhead. “We’re going to learn the hard, dirty, rough parts of ourselves and share them at the same time,” is how he describes their dramatic approach. “Jake invites vulnerability,” Hathaway says. “He’s not afraid of that.”

I'm sure Jake likes Anne a lot, but who wouldn't want to work with someone so nice and talented?

Anonymous said...

Re. Michelle - she supposedly had a fling with Joshua Jackson too. They all (Josh, Busy, Michelle) remained friends to this day. Michelle's a nice gal and a good actress, but she's definitely not so innocent. You can get her pretty fast in the sack (there's a track record of her fucking almost every male co-star during the shoot of the movie). Not that there's something wrong with that though.

Absolutely. I'm a fan of Anne, even a tad more than of Jake I must admit.

Dear Ted:
Now that we all know that Austin Nichols has a Blind Vice (and you said it's very juicy), I was wondering if Sophia Bush knows anything about it? And if she doesn't know then I feel bad for her 'cause she needs a real man, the girl is beautiful.

Sophia is definitely aware of Austin's Vices. There's really no hiding this one—and she's cool with it too, which makes her perfect for him (at least for now).

Chely Wright Is Sorry She Ever Tricked Men Like Brad Paisley Into Dating Her said...

Chely Wright finally landed the big kahuna on her coming out tour: Oprah. Yesterday the country singer, joined by her (accepting and wonderful) father, gave the daytime queen the chance to make her cry, and audiences weren't disappointed.

It was actually a really terrific interview, as most of Wright's chats have been. She's known she is gay since her teens, but yes, she was among those who would say demeaning things to other gays just so she could fit in. It was easier to choose homophobe over homosexual. How terrible.

So why is she coming out now? For her own sanity really, but also for a noble purpose: So young kids don't have to deal with the shame that she went through. It's too bad, then, that "just two" other country stars have reached out to her to wish her well since she came out.

But most remarkable about this interview — besides getting the chance to hear from her father Stan, who's been loving and accepting — and what she writes in the book, is her apology for the men she quote-unquote tricked into dating her. They include mega country stars like Brad Paisley, whom Chely dated and slept with knowing full well she could never love them.

And you better watch this last clip, where she mentions one of her "biggest fears" about coming out: not being able to do anything with the military again. And then she "ran into about 12 military men last week, and they were all in uniform," and they told her, "You were there for us, we're gonna be there for you."

I'd like to know who those "just two" country stars are. It was a great interview. Good for her - I love what she said about not wanting young kids to go through the hell she went through. It's refreshing to hear a celeb do more than just spout clichés about how much they like kids.

There’s not much actors won’t say to promote their movies, especially Jake who, like someone here put it very well a while ago, plays it differently depending on the type of movie he has to sell (ambiguous for BBM, dating costar for Rendition, hetero fratboy for POP& LAOD). Case in point, Jake and Heath kept telling the press how well they got along, that there were never problems between them, etcetc but now, since promo for BBM is long done Jake is finally telling the truth. How about that, complete honesty, no PR bullshit for a change. Refreshing!

Jake also had a big row with the late Heath Ledger, his co-star in the emotional drama Brokeback Mountain.

"Heath and I had different ways of working," he explains. "I was trying to apply things I had seen other actors do - like where you interrupt the other actor to change the dynamic of the scene.

"Heath got pretty irritated with me and we had some arguments about that. Then we found a way of working together that was much more comfortable. Maybe I helped him in some way - but now, of course, it's impossible to know."

Queerty comment:

'My god, if there's any one thing to admire about this woman, it's how upfront she is about what she's pulled in the past to prevent herself from being outed. I like how she just copped to it immediately when Oprah asked her if she'd ever been outwardly homophobic in an effort to prevent herself from being outed (first video clip). It takes some serious guts to just be upfront about *everything* you've done, and I respect her for that.'

Did Jake trash gays when he was a kid?

In spite of what Jake said in GQ about them keeping in touch, I really have to wonder if Jake and Heath had a falling out after the awards season/sometime before Heath died. Would explain why we never saw/heard of them hanging out.

We did hear about them hanging out. We never saw/heard of Heath and Johnny Depp hanging out.

How can anyone know that? I think they had clashing personalities, there could've been plenty of reasons.

As some poster said before, Jake & Heath didn't have too much time to nurture their friendship. Both of their professional and private lives were on a rush right after BBM promo, they lived at the other sides of the country.I think they didn't get to spend much quality time together, but of course, neither of them thought that Heath had just a few more years to live :(

I don't "hate" Jake and Heath together. Besides Heath's funeral and wake in Australia there were two memorials, both in LA, one private (only the closest people to Heath were invited) and one public for Heath's friends, costars, peers, people in the industry, etc which Nicola attended. Jake was invited to the latter. Pecorini and Terry Gilliam are friends with Heath's family, why would they lie?
