Why Ricky Matters (to me... and maybe a few other boys)

By Lorenzo Herrera y Lozano

March 30, 2010

There’s been a lot of commotion regarding Ricky Martin’s recent coming out statement on his official website. As with most things in life these days, I learned about the news on Facebook. So, I immediately posted about the news as well and quickly joined in the jubilee of queerness and pranced about the office like a middle school-aged boy who accidently touched hands with his classroom crush. I even committed the blasphemy of comparing the news to that of Health Care Reform and the release of Apple’s iPad (insert sound of angel choir here).

And then, of course, there was the storm of cattiness that followed the news. As a queer Xicano, I admit that sarcasm is built into my genetic code. The survivor of four Christian-themed religions and 500+ years of white supremacist occupation, I find humor, irony and disbelief in most things. Still, yesterday I just wanted to celebrate.

I agree that the fact that Ricky is gay is not all that shocking. Queer men and not long speculated or asserted that he shook his bon bon far too well to be straight. Plus, for us jotos/maricones/patos, there was the added benefit of dreaming him up queer, which somehow put us that much closer to his arms.

Still, as the catty remarks continue, as people boast about how they knew and think he should have done this 10 years ago, or sassy queens dismiss the news as inconsequential, I say, look beyond our borders (geographic, cultural, and age-based) and take a minute to honor the fact that for many, Ricky’s coming out is groundbreaking, perhaps even life-saving.

So Ricky was doing more than living la vida loca; he was, in fact, a loca. To the trained eye, this is just confirmation that our gaydar runs on more than hormones and dreams.

Hormones, dreams and cattiness aside, I challenge the ungleeful remarks about Ricky’s coming out.

As with most performers who began as Spanish-language artists, Ricky began over 10 years ago. The Barbara Walters interview (assuming it was Barbara, I can never tell who is behind that cloud of light) did have me on the edge of my teenage self, hoping he’d come out and proclaim his gayness, but it wasn’t his beginning. Ricky’s career began decades ago.

Long before the Latin Explosion, which was more of a Latin Spark, Ricky had left his imprint on the Spanish pop scene of the late 80’s and early to mid-90’s. Back when Thalía and Paulina were still artists and relevant, before Gloria Trevi’s traumatic (for her and her fans) imprisonment in Brazil, and before Alejandra Guzmán would be hospitalized for too much botox on her behind, there was a cultural movement in Latin America.

As a pre-teen growing up in a rural town of 300 in northern México, Thalía, Paulina, Gloria, Alejandra and Ricky were my window into another world. Their performances pushed, albeit at times gently and censured, the boundaries of repressive cultural norms. From flowers wrapped around a microphone to songs about teen pregnancy and abortion, these young performers were resisting and embodying another realm of cultural possibilities. Ricky gave boys the excuse (and perhaps reason) to shake our hips in ways that would otherwise be condemned as obscene.

The dismissal of Ricky’s coming out seems to be rooted in an U.S.-centric perspective where we have the opportunity to stop celebrating any queer image on TV and offer our critique. There is so much gayness these days that we can spend our days and dissertations balking at how a character isn’t gay enough, is too gay, is too white, etc. And although we don’t actually have the type of representation GLAAD and I would like to see, we have a whole lot more than we did in México in 1992 (except, of course, Ricky gently caressing his long hair on stage… oh, and Locomía).

I am not critiquing the fact that we spend so much time criticizing queer portrayals in the media. To the contrary, I am celebrating the fact that we can. In fact, I’d go further and ask why queer people of color media performance and productions are so weak, lame and superficial. Having once curating a queer people of color cultural arts program, I know we can do better.

What I am critiquing is that our criticisms of Ricky’s coming out has us falling into the pitfall of imagining and defining all things queer through a U.S. lens. I even joked about the fact that he used the term “homosexual” to define himself. And now, in retrospect I find that identifying as a “fortunate homosexual” was much more powerful than a simple “gay.”

Perhaps for the jaded queen living in urban U.S., the oversaturation of gayness in the media has deemed Ricky insignificant and worthy of our dismissal. For that frightened and confused 12 year old in rural Chihuahua, it’s monumental.

My coming out process was stumped by the fact that I could not even imagine my queerness, let alone live it. At the time, the saturation of gayness was mostly strictly white. It wasn’t until queer brown men like Jaime Cortez and Emanuel Xavier fearlessly (or perhaps fearfully) exposed their work and their bodies to the sun of public criticism, that I was able to imagine myself.

Whether U.S. fags approve or not, Ricky is a prominent figure here, and more importantly, in Latino América. Ricky’s coming out makes it possible for young boys in countless homes to imagine themselves as something other than confused.

For this, I say to Ricky: gracias. And, you know where to find me.

No need to answer the sheeple question, I've just googled it.

If liking the idea that Jake might be gay (and with Austin plus BT(s)) makes me a sheeple then I'm happy with the title.

Same could be said for all those people that liked the idea of Reeke, or the skanky Moscow 'working' girls, different horses and different courses etc.

Anonymous said...

jfc, 10:59, ever hear of irony? sarcasm? some of the trolls out there take this shit much too seriously, lol.

Actually, the people who liked the idea of Reeke are just plain weird and unsettling. Even the gyllenbabblers have seen the light on that little concept.

(now I really must get back to doing something more productive than sheepling away the day here)

Gemma Arterton and Jake Gyllenhaal talk romance between their Prince of Persia characters

Exclusive: Gemma Arterton and Jake Gyllenhaal talk romance

^^Gemma is SO beautiful and has such a great, womanly body. I like that, so unlike Hollywood.
Jake as Dastan is just gorgeous.
In the movie they look like they are made for each other. Almost as perfect as Jake and Heath looked together on screen (and off ;)).

The 29-year-old actor got in incredible shape for his role as Prince Dastan in the action-adventure movie but his physical improvements have been missed by members of the opposite sex.

Taylor Lautner Gives Oprah 3 Reasons for Fans to Think He's Gay said...

Today on Oprah in a pre-taped segment, Twilight's brood will explain to the doyenne of spirituality why America's tweens and moms go ape-shit over a series of terrible movies. But Oprah will also try to get personal. And for those looking for reasons to think Taylor Lautner is a homogay, he delivers.

Oprah asks Taylor what he looks for in a woman. He responds: "Specifically — I have to choose a lady right now?" The gay in you wants to say, "What, he doesn't want to choose a lady?"

He says an ideal lady would have "loyalty." The gay in you wants to say, "Yeah, loyalty to keep his gay secret!"

And then Robert Pattinson jumps in and offers, "Must like beef patties." And the gay in you wants to SCREAM: "Because he likes the meat!"

It's me or someone is really pissed off about everything connected to Heath? This is the problem. I see why Jaustins are so jealous and frustrated. Michelle is not a beard. Jake have no way to usa her daughter or Heath. And Jake have no reason to lie. Jake and Heath could be friends and met each other in private, stayed in touch by phone and so on.... Heath and Maggie were almost next door neighbours right?
Jake cared for Heath and now he cares for Matilda It's plausible. More plausible than two babies in the closed.
I'm not a brokie or a jaustin.
I'm just a person who lives in real world. Love & peace.

Someone is EXTREMELY pissed off about everything connected to Heath.

Like someone said, Jake did not bring up Matilda or say anything about her, except that it is an honor to be a godfather, but that was enough for some poster or posters to insult Jake and call him the scum of the Earth.

Anonymous said...

Heath and Maggie were almost next door neighbours right?

Right.

Anonymous said...

He said Yes, he was her godfather and it's a responsibility he takes very seriously. He didn't just nod his head in agreement as some are trying to say. He confirmed he's her godfather - so that says a lot. I also think the "we" was referring to he and Lorraine, if they ever interview together again and he has a child.

Anonymous said...

but that was enough for some poster or posters to insult Jake and call him the scum of the Earth.

LOL, yes. This is too funny.

Anonymous said...

12:58 PM, you are right, but the point is that Jake did not bring up Matilda. The accusation that Jake would use Matilda to get publicity is insane.

Anonymous said...

^^It was the interviewer who brought up the children, not him.

I liked the interview and I thought it was nothing shady about it.

Anonymous said...

^^Absolutely. He did not. I don't know what causes this Heath animosity, it comes from both sides, sadly, the JiG crowd and the JiS crowd. Sorry, Jake said "it's a responsibility he's proud to have." So there's no ambiguity about it.

I HATE when interviewers ask this question. It's so freaking insipid and cliché and they're only going to get insipid and cliché answers. He looked so uncomfortable, I felt sorry for him.

Nonsense. Maybe some posters just find the timing of Jake's "opening up" about Heath and their "friendship" suspicious. Honestly, after the Reeke bs, Jake's lies regarding his sexuality, etc can you blame those who do? Jake proved he's capable of lying when it suits him so pardon my skepticism.

For that, you have to head over to babblers or their sisters at DC lashers :)

How Heath Ledger's Family Keeps His Memory Alive

He's been gone for more than two years, but Heath Ledger's family continues to make sure his memory is here to stay.

"He is alive in my heart and in my head. Every day I talk to him," Ledger's sister, Kate told PEOPLE Thursday night at the sixth annual Australians in Film Breakthrough Awards, which honored Ryan Kwanten and Chris Hemsworth, in Los Angeles. Kate and Ledger's mother, Sally Bell, were on hand to watch Colin Farrell present up-and-coming actress Bella Heathcote with the Heath Ledger Scholarship.

"It is very special," Kate said. "It's honoring our boy so we couldn't be prouder and we think it is an amazing scholarship that is going to give so many opportunities.

His mother added, "He had a huge passion for acting. That was the most important thing for him. It wasn't about the money. He had such a passion that just showed through regardless of how big the role was."

Ledger's family said it comforts them to know he will be forever immortalized in films, but Kate admitted that "we haven't been able to watch any."

"We find that too difficult," the late Oscar winner's mother added.

Bell also gushed about her granddaughter, Matilda, Ledger's daughter with actress Michelle Williams.

"She is amazing. We keep in touch with Michelle and Matilda a lot. We spend as much time together as we can as a family and on Skype and phoning."

When asked if she sees pieces of Heath, who died in January 2008 from an accidental overdose, in Matilda, Bell quickly responded, "Absolutely."

"In some of her movements it is just naturally in the way she moves. But there is a lot of Michelle there as well."

How on Earth can you compare bearding and using a dead person for publicity???

After Reeke I have come to believe Jake will do anything to have an A-list career. There doesn't seem to be a move he makes that isn't thought out in advance, right down to who he gets "caught" photographed with.

And could that include talking about Heath, something he didn't do for over two years, then yes, count me as one who is skeptical that he did it just because he all of a sudden felt the need to open up and talk about Heath. I also agree with the poster who said Jake talks about all these other people because he can't talk about himself.

This has NOTHING to do with my being a Jaustinite.

I adored Heath, and I will never completely get over his death. I went and placed a candle in front of his place in Soho after he died. I still feel sick everytime I think about his no longer being here.

I have no problem with Heath, so I would really appreciate it if you would stop saying all Jaustinites have a problem with Heath whenever Heath, Matilda, etc. comes up.

Being "straight" is very important for A-list career. What talking about Heath has to do with anyone's A-list career, how could that be connected?

Anonymous said...

I also agree with the poster who said Jake talks about all these other people because he can't talk about himself.

But who are "all these other people"? And Jake didn't introduce the subject of Heath or Matilda or Ramona into that one interview - the interviewer did that. And he hardly went on and on about them - he answered as succinctly as he could. Look, I'm pretty disgusted with the bearding crap, too - but I also like to think I can sit back and have some objectivity.

Jake Gyllenhaal is either going to throw a punch or burst into tears. That much seems certain from the way the 29-year-old actor is looking at me: eyes gleaming, chin lowered, his implausibly overpumped muscles almost ripping apart the seams of his army-green T-shirt. Suddenly I recall what he told me at the beginning of our meeting: “I did learn a bit of action on the set of this movie, so you’d better be careful...”

It was a joke. Or so I thought.

The topic that has brought my interview with the Prince of Persia star to a grinding standstill is that of his late friend, Heath Ledger — whose daughter, Matilda Rose, is Gyllenhaal’s goddaughter. Initially the actor seems happy to discuss their work together in the Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain — which featured several cowboy-on-cowboy love scenes — and he describes the filming in the summer of 2004 as “a magical time . . . I’d never witnessed the power of a movie in that way”. But when I ask how he remembers his Australian co-star, who died two years ago from a prescription drug overdose, his entire body appears to turn stiff, and a long, deeply uncomfortable silence ensues.

“Uh ... yeah,” he manages, eventually.

More silence. For a moment I fear that the actor might simply get up from where he’s sitting, under a bay window on the ground floor of a Santa Monica hotel (he wanted the sun to be directly on his face), and walk out. After all, Gyllenhaal is more sensitive than usual to press intrusion these days, largely thanks to the US tabloid frenzy over his break-up with Reese Witherspoon, the divorced star of Legally Blonde.

But Gyllenhaal isn’t angry, I soon realise. He’s choked — to the point where his eyes are glassing over. “That role,” he says, of Brokeback, “and the fate of all the characters and souls who were involved in the making of that project ... it’s just . . .” He trails off. “I don’t have much to say. Apart from the fact that that film moved many, many people.”

Davide Bo said...

Heath and Matilda are real.
Happy family Tile probably not. This is the problem. We dont know if Jake and Austin are still together either. I guess for someone is frustrating.

TO said...

I suggest we move on to the next question, and Gyllenhaal nods. Within a few seconds the awkwardness is over, the actor has snapped back to his default charm, and we return to the topic at hand: his unlikely new blockbuster, based on a video game and produced by Mr AntiSensitive himself, Jerry Bruckheimer — known for such delicate Hollywood fare as, well, Bad Boys II.

Prince of Persia — with the British director Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) — could hardly be farther removed from Brokeback, which was adapted from a story in The New Yorker about two rugged men who fall in love while cattle ranching in Wyoming. Indeed, just the thought of Gyllenhaal, who makes no secret of his left-wing politics, working with Bruckheimer, who supported George W. Bush and helped to turn fluorescentyellow Hummers into a status symbol, is enough to make many people splutter.

When I mention this to Gyllenhaal, he laughs. “Jerry’s more sensitive than he comes across, and I’m tougher than I seem,” he says. “And when you have respect for someone in a creative sense, it’s wonderful, regardless of your political points of view — which have never come up, by the way.” Nevertheless, he admits: “I’m definitely not the obvious choice to play this role, which is the reason why I wanted to play it. I’ve pretty much approached everything I’ve done in my career that way.”

The role is that of Prince Dastan, a fantastical Persian hero who must retrieve an ancient dagger to save the world. Those who are used to seeing Gyllenhaal carry himself on screen with an air of Salingeresque detachment — think of Donnie Darko (2001) or The Good Girl (2002) — will be in for a big shock when they see Prince of Persia. The actor has traded his inner Holden Caulfield for his inner Conan the Barbarian, right down to the codpiece and the ludicrous man-wig.

TO said...

“It all started with the idea that the movie was going to be based on a sense of reality,” he explains, with a straight face. “That’s what separates this film from other video- game adaptations: the idea that it could be plausibly done in reality. That’s why David Belle [the inventor of parkour, also called freerunning] was hired to come in and to advise and choreograph a lot of the sequences. And when you learn parkour, that’s how the muscles become the muscles. Obviously I also did a lot of cardiovascular work, and there were the semi-daily runs from the set in Morocco to the hotel. At the end of every day I’d put on my running shoes and go for a run. When you’re in the middle of the desert it’s pretty extraordinary.”

Another first for this new bikini-waxed, protein-shake-gulping incarnation of Gyllenhaal: a “British” accent. “I had to learn it,” he says. “In fact, I had been intimidated by other roles where I would have had to do a British accent. Some I’ve stayed away from, to be honest, out of respect — I know that culturally it differentiates people in so many ways. As an American, you really can’t tell. I worked with Barbara Berkery [who coached Gwyneth Paltrow for Sliding Doors and Renée Zellweger for Bridget Jones’s Diary], I listened to tapes, but there was no one specific that I worked on. I wish I could say it was Mick Jagger, but in this case ... no.”

Overall, it’s a convincing effort: imagine a kind of Mockneyish Prince Harry. “That was the accent that worked the best, in terms of delivery, wryness, of the comedy in the script,” Gyllenhaal explains, after claiming not to have heard the phrase Mockney. “I tried to steer it a little south, but my dialect coach wouldn’t let me. I just always felt it added a little bit of flair.”

He had lots of time to practise. Three months were spent filming on location and another three working at Pinewood. “I never broke the accent, even when I was on set, because I knew I’d get that cringe factor from the Brits — even though I know the British can be very polite — overly polite, in my opinion. But I really love that, too.”

The Heath Ledger moment notwithstanding, Gyllenhaal makes for charming and playful — if slightly precocious — company. He is not, however, the kind of actor who makes headlines when he opens his mouth: he’s way too practised for that. Instead he offers feedback on the quality of my questions (“it’s the way they’re presented that’s important”) and dodges awkward topics with deadpan humour (“I have no comment about whether a movie is good or not when I’m talking to a journalist”). All this he does while looking in obscenely good health — although, for all his natural athleticism, you still get the feeling that he’d rather be at home, writing poetry, than, say, playing football.

I have never seen anyone on WFT2 or OMG express hatred of Heath. But since you think this goes on, I would appreciate a specific example of what you believe is a Jaustinite expressing their hatred of Heath.

TO said...

If there’s something almost antiseptically professional about Gyllenhaal, it’s almost certainly because of his upbringing, which seems to have given him an immunity to the many delusions of Hollywood stardom. Born in Los Angeles, the son of the Hollywood director Stephen Gyllenhaal and the Oscar-nominated screenwriter Naomi Foner, he’s been a showbusiness insider since the age of 10, when he made his cinema debut in City Slickers. Meanwhile, his uncle on his father’s side is executive editor of The Miami Herald, and his godmother is Jamie Lee Curtis. Even his older sister, Maggie, 32, is an A-lister in her own right, and is married to the Dead Man Walking actor Peter Sarsgaard.

“I grew up in a family of storytellers,” Gyllenhaal says. “I had parents whose lives were saved and changed by watching movies. That was always the emphasis in my house — what an extraordinary medium movies can be.”

The hyper-achievement of the Gyllenhaal family isn’t a recent phenomenon. In fact, it goes all the way back to the Swedish nobility. “I’ve gotten scolded many times by my family for having heard the origins of my name, saying it publicly, and then getting, ‘That is not what our last name means!’ ” the actor laughs. “But according to one story, one of my great-grandfathers was a cataloguer of beetles and butterflies, and the King of Sweden collected all of his papers, and supposedly gave him a room off the Golden Hall in Stockholm where he could work. So our last name is Gyllenhaal. That could be total shite, though, to be honest.”

While others might have struggled with acne or social embarrassment as teenagers, Gyllenhaal’s primary frustration was not being able to appear in Hollywood blockbusters for which he had successfully auditioned. “I remember being very upset, because I would audition, and my parents would say, ‘OK, we’ll let him do that, but then at some point I got a role, a big role [in The Mighty Ducks, a Disney franchise from 1992] ]and they were like, ‘No, no, no’. In hindsight, it was a blessing. A child needs an upbringing, I firmly believe that. And if you’re going to do something, anything, and you are gonna do it well, there has to be resistance. But at the time, it was horrible.”

It’s perhaps because of this resistance that Gyllenhaal isn’t as arrogant as he might otherwise have been. He seems genuinely worried about his film accent, for example, and frets about pleasing the video-game fanatics who will no doubt offer brutally honest opinions about the actor’s turn as their virtual hero. “It’s quite a culture, and I think it’s intimidating in terms of a movie,” he says. “But then again, I’ve played characters who existed in real life, who’ve been to war, worked for the CIA, and, in that sense, it’s interesting that I feel as much pressure to satisfy the gaming world as I would a US Marine.”

Speaking of which: how did America’s Devil Dogs react to Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of a Gulf War antihero in Jarhead? “Definitely a mixed reaction,” he responds, with a quick smile. “Some people really loved it, and ... well, what I appreciate is the flat-out honesty I get from people who were in the service. They come up to me and say, ‘Hey, are you the guy from Jarhead?’ I go, ‘Yeah’. And they go, ‘I didn’t like that movie’.”

He bursts out laughing.

And what about Brokeback Mountain? What does the general public think of that? Thankfully, with the mood lightened, Gyllenhaal seems comfortable returning to the subject of the Oscar-winning movie with one of the most tragic postscripts in modern cinema history. “There was a beauty to that film,” he says, with feeling, “regardless of the jokes poked at it. There was a beauty to it that surpassed all that other stuff.”

Is the same reason why some jaustinite cannot stand Matilda.
Because Matilda is real, BT probably not.
Heath and Jake were not lovers. But Jake talk about him, and their friendship and Matilda....and not about BT and austin. And Heath was gorgeous and uber-talented and hot...
I think they are just jealous, frustrated and pissed off about that. And so they trashed Heath and try to belittling his friendship with Jake.
Blabbler cannot stand Heath because they thinks Jake is overshadowed by him. Some Jaustinite cannot stand Heath because Austin is overshadowed by him. Childish but true.

This is just your opinion posted a second time. You still haven't given any examples. I'll take it then that you don't have any, and the reason you don't have any is because there are none.

I wonder sometimes if some, not all, only want to think of Jake and Austin as TOTP (the One True Pairing). Not all Jaustinites feel this way, I don't think. But for some, the mere mention of other men in Jake's life (not to mention women) upsets some. Case in point: the Henry Cavill rumors which haven't amounted to anything. Just the mere mention.

Anonymous said...

This is just your opinion posted a second time. You still haven't given any examples.

Why do we need examples for something more than obvious?

Anonymous said...

It was implied that those who would even mildly consider the thought of the Henry Cavill rumors must be drama addicts for whom a stable relationship was boring, or had our morality questions, Henry was a homewrecker, etc, just by speculating about a dang rumor! They don't know squat about what a poster really thinks! TBH, I think it's unrealistic to think that there never before was or never will be anyone else for them. I do tend to think there's something to the rumors of them being a couple (J&A), but I don't know about BT, especially after the latest interview. He implies he has no kids yet. Sometimes I think there is a BT, sometimes not. JMO

But when I ask how he remembers his Australian co-star, who died two years ago from a prescription drug overdose, his entire body appears to turn stiff, and a long, deeply uncomfortable silence ensues.
“Uh ... yeah,” he manages, eventually.

So how does he remember Heath?

For all his so-called talk about Heath in GQ and other articles, Jake really didn't say much about how Heath and his death impacted him. Sure, he shared some memories of him and said he admired him but the way he talks feels... detached. I don't know what to make of it.

Not true. When Heath died and Jake was reeking like crazy, some posters here (including me) were thinking that Jake was putting distance between himself and his dead co-star but that he would be all out spoken when it would suit him in the future.
That's what some of us predicted and that's what he is doing now.

I still think he was a close friend of Heath and that he is in a sporadical contact with Michelle & Matilda. I don't think he lies, he just mentions this stuff when is good PR for him.

She is seriously off her rocker. I'm not joking. The worst part is how she tried to pretend to be upset when Heath died, but she still couldn't quite keep herself from taking thinly veiled shots at him. I mean there are fangirls - and then there are absolute freaking loons and she fits into the latter category. She idolizes Jake to such a degree that it's actually creepy - and the fact that carries the idol worship over to the Jack Twist character is even scarier. I don't think the accent is going to be a real sticking point for the majority of people - it sounds okay to me, certainly not so bad that it would be distracting. It seems to me that Disney is really pushing this towards kids and families right now - Jake has mentioned kids more than once - and I don't think they'll be that picky about the accent or how faithful it is to the game.

Italian interview said...

Translated:

Dastan or Jake Gyllenhaal

The actor is the star of the Disney blockbuster "The Prince of Persia". It admits to being a bit 'childish.

It may happen that the idea of interviewing Jake Gyllenhaal suggests calm and some confusion, but what will this young man who takes his jacket like a baywatcher forced to wear it by force, ending each time in the rankings of the sexiest men?

Some answers had already arrived in London from the preview of Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time (at cinemas from 19 May), Disney blockbuster based on a video game, directed by Mike Newell and produced by the magician-a-mistake-hit Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Without a Trace, CSI and more) will be long hair, will be the warrior's armor, it will struggle to save a magic sword that can turn back time but we must recognize that without jacket Jake Gyllenhaal makes more.

And when we find him in front of t-shirts and biceps, and shows off the smile and blink green eyes, everything becomes clear in a flash: the calm becomes hypnotic state and then on every word of Jake seem intelligent. As when, for example, indicates the two boxes of Lego play Castle won by Dastan (ie him) in the film. "I am glad that they did, I love Lego."

Prefer Dastan in Prince of Persia release or is it now? (Short hair and less muscular).
Like now. That is, I prefer in general to interpret Dastan although it was great fun. Jump, do somersaults, go on horseback, fight and win always better than that ... I achieved my childhood dream.

Because even adults like fairy tales such as The Prince of Persia?
If history is good and decent actors ... Adults also go to the movies for fun. However, this is a film to bring the family, if it has one.

But he is still single after the breakup with Reese Witherspoon in December?
Yes, I'm single.

So it is not engaged to Australian actress Isabel Lucas, which is paparazzi?
No, we only went out to dinner.

And how his life as a single?
Beer, junk food ... No, joke. Be ', is very different from living in pairs. But I like being alone now.

But as time passes?
I see my friends, those I grew up with. Sometimes when you pair it closes and neglect others, and I'm trying to fix it. Spending time with my family, my sister (actress Maggie Gyllenhaal) has a daughter and I'm her uncle.

He is also the godfather of Heath Ledger's daughter Matilda.
I see her whenever I can, when she comes to Los Angeles with her mother. (Actress Michelle Williams)

The fairy tale favorite child?
The Sword in the Stone.

And now?
The Sword in the Stone. My father always read to me and my sister before going to sleep.

Play video games?
Yes, I relax. In other films toughest I've played people who were in jail, soldiers ... amuse themselves with video games was not bad.

His parents have recently divorced after thirty years of marriage. This has changed something in his way of looking at the couple?
Yes I understand that it takes courage to stand in a relationship, and who there wants to break it when you realize that is evolving. I have seen two people put a lot of time to realize that she had not gone as they had imagined and agree with much delicacy and attention to oneself and family, to separate. For me it was a great lesson.

I personally find it hard to believe because he went and did a photo op with the Chin and her kids 4 days later. I could understand him not releasing a statement. He could have felt that it was a personal matter and saying something public may have made it look like grandstanding. But if Jake was so distraght over his friends death, why would he agreed to do a staged photo op with his beard and her kids 4 days later? The purpose of the photo ops was to show how supportive a girlfriend Chinny was and how he was such a family unit with her and her kids. You know the photo op was staged because I seriously doubt that paps were hanging around a state park hoping to catch some movie star.

Being closeted, though, is a form of lying and Jake lies easily and well. But that doesn't make him a pathological liar and it doesn't mean every word out of his mouth is a lie. Jake can't dance

I'm starting to believe that Jake is straight.

Yeah, bearding with Reese turned Jake straight! LMAO

Aw, don't be upset, Jake! Maybe those young girls will go with their moms and dads to see PoP. I mean, you made it for kids, right? ;)

LOL. Maybe his dancing is better when he's sober - and not with female hookers :)

Some gay men are masculine, some are feminine.
Some love sports, some don't.
Some love musicals and opera, some don't.
Some can dance, some can't.

Well at least we know he'll never be asked to be on Dancing with the Has-Beens

Also, does knowing some of the "evils" of these stars make you like them less?
As for their "evils," sure sometimes it makes me like them less, but sometimes it makes me like them more.

I'm adorable!

Wings (1927)

WHO KISSES WHO?: A male soldier kisses his dying friend.

WHAT'S THE REST OF THE FILM ABOUT?: Jack and David are rivals over the lovely Sylvia Lewis. When they enlist as WWI fighter pilots, they become friends—tragedy ensues.

WHY IS THE KISS SO HOT?: "The climax of the story comes with the epic Battle of Saint-Mihiel. David is shot down and presumed dead. However, he survives the crash, steals a German biplane, and heads for the Allied lines. By a tragic stroke of bad luck, Jack, who is bent on avenging his friend, spots the German plane and shoots David down. When Jack lands to check on the wreckage, he becomes distraught and places a lingering kiss on the mouth of his friend just before he dies."

LOVE PECK: Wings is the only silent film to ever win an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Don't go, Jack! Just stay here with me ...

How the heck do you know that "Jake knows that?" Do you know him personally? Did he tell you that?

No, he didn't tell me that. But can you imagine what people close to them and people in general would say if they hooked up? I think most would condemn it. I mean, he's the kid's godfather. I think most would find it tacky. And yes, I think Jake knows that. It's perfectly enough to keep in touch and be there for her if needed.

In terms of emotional challenge, how does Prince of Persia compare to your iconic role as Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain?

“Well, I think the role of Prince of Persia is already iconic because so many people have played and are playing the video game. I think the Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain, who was created in a short story, didn’t become necessarily iconic until the movie came out. It touched so many people and became a part of the celluloid culture.”

Brokeback Mountain is a beautiful love story, isn’t it?

“Yes, it is.”

...
Are you the type of actor who takes risks in choice of roles?

“That’s a question I should ask people, the public.”

I mean, you dare take a role like the one in Brokeback Mountain which most actors would shy away from because they think that playing a gay character has a “stigma” to it.

“Oh, I would like to be called that then, an actor who takes risks. I think I have made a lot of choices that made people go, ‘What!?!’ I did Brokeback Mountain because I read the script and I was, you know, so moved by it. In my opinion, you’d be a fool not to have done that movie. I was like weeping while reading that script. When a script can elicit that kind of emotion, it’s there, it’s a blueprint. Whatever fears come to mind about how people are gonna perceive you...if you have those fears that would stop you from giving a good performance. If you are moved by script, then go with that first instinct. When I read the first page of the Prince of Persia script, I felt the same way. Forget those fears, follow your instinct.” (Trivia: In a scene in Brokeback Mountain, Jake and Heath are shown jumping naked into the river. In a GQ interview, Jake admitted that it was only Heath who stripped and a “double” did it for Jake.)

Any role that you would not play?

“I won’t say specifically what roles but there have been roles that I turned down and that went to other actors, even if people told me that I would be amazing in them. If I feel that I can’t do it, then I’d rather not do it.”

How do you spend your time away from work?

“I spend my time with my family; I spend a lot of time with my family. I love, you know, cooking and I love to grow the food that I cook, mostly vegetables. I spend time with my sister and my brother-in-law and my niece. I’m really a homebody.”

In Prince of Persia, your character Dastan possesses an ancient dagger that can release the Sands of Time. If you got hold of that dagger, what period of your past would you like to go back to?

“Oh, we’re really going deep now. So what period of my past would I go back to? I won’t change anything but I’d like to see my birth; I want to see how I came out.”

WTF?

((((Jake)))))

You know what's funny? I happened to read the Brokeback book "from script to screenplay" (I forget the exact title) recently, and I read those pages, the "page 15", that bothered Mark Wahlberg so much. There's absolutely nothing, nothing written there that should have bothered anyone. It's beautifully written and not graphic at all. Unless it was changed? :(

can anyone give me a quick review of what happened the last 7 days?

During the Adam Lambert interview, Jonathan Ross was talking about two guys kissing and he said he’ll kiss the guests (including Jake) and Jake did a gagging gesture at the idea of Jonathan kissing him.

Jake dancing and "hiting on" Russian chicks at the after party in Moscow:

“I would love to play Joe Namath,” Jake admitted. “I’ve been working on it for a long time, trying to develop that story. We got to get it right, got to get the extraordinary story perfect if we’re going to do it. But it would be a dream to play him.”

^^^I’m delighted to find Jake a funny guy in person, talking tongue-in-cheek and putting on a serious face when answering a rather “trivial” question (Is he flattered to be a sex symbol?, etc.) only to break his sentence with a hearty laughter. There’s a certain sadness in his sky blue eyes that pierce you with the same intensity with which Jake attacks his roles. He’s the laughing type and that makes the interview a refreshing interview, indeed!

I wonder what Jake's sad about, missing BT and the hubby?

Missing the hubby? Impossible, Jake and Austin are in the same city 4-5 weeks per year!
