Why Ricky Matters (to me... and maybe a few other boys)

By Lorenzo Herrera y Lozano

March 30, 2010

There’s been a lot of commotion regarding Ricky Martin’s recent coming out statement on his official website. As with most things in life these days, I learned about the news on Facebook. So, I immediately posted about the news as well and quickly joined in the jubilee of queerness and pranced about the office like a middle school-aged boy who accidently touched hands with his classroom crush. I even committed the blasphemy of comparing the news to that of Health Care Reform and the release of Apple’s iPad (insert sound of angel choir here).

And then, of course, there was the storm of cattiness that followed the news. As a queer Xicano, I admit that sarcasm is built into my genetic code. The survivor of four Christian-themed religions and 500+ years of white supremacist occupation, I find humor, irony and disbelief in most things. Still, yesterday I just wanted to celebrate.

I agree that the fact that Ricky is gay is not all that shocking. Queer men and not long speculated or asserted that he shook his bon bon far too well to be straight. Plus, for us jotos/maricones/patos, there was the added benefit of dreaming him up queer, which somehow put us that much closer to his arms.

Still, as the catty remarks continue, as people boast about how they knew and think he should have done this 10 years ago, or sassy queens dismiss the news as inconsequential, I say, look beyond our borders (geographic, cultural, and age-based) and take a minute to honor the fact that for many, Ricky’s coming out is groundbreaking, perhaps even life-saving.

So Ricky was doing more than living la vida loca; he was, in fact, a loca. To the trained eye, this is just confirmation that our gaydar runs on more than hormones and dreams.

Hormones, dreams and cattiness aside, I challenge the ungleeful remarks about Ricky’s coming out.

As with most performers who began as Spanish-language artists, Ricky began over 10 years ago. The Barbara Walters interview (assuming it was Barbara, I can never tell who is behind that cloud of light) did have me on the edge of my teenage self, hoping he’d come out and proclaim his gayness, but it wasn’t his beginning. Ricky’s career began decades ago.

Long before the Latin Explosion, which was more of a Latin Spark, Ricky had left his imprint on the Spanish pop scene of the late 80’s and early to mid-90’s. Back when Thalía and Paulina were still artists and relevant, before Gloria Trevi’s traumatic (for her and her fans) imprisonment in Brazil, and before Alejandra Guzmán would be hospitalized for too much botox on her behind, there was a cultural movement in Latin America.

As a pre-teen growing up in a rural town of 300 in northern México, Thalía, Paulina, Gloria, Alejandra and Ricky were my window into another world. Their performances pushed, albeit at times gently and censured, the boundaries of repressive cultural norms. From flowers wrapped around a microphone to songs about teen pregnancy and abortion, these young performers were resisting and embodying another realm of cultural possibilities. Ricky gave boys the excuse (and perhaps reason) to shake our hips in ways that would otherwise be condemned as obscene.

The dismissal of Ricky’s coming out seems to be rooted in an U.S.-centric perspective where we have the opportunity to stop celebrating any queer image on TV and offer our critique. There is so much gayness these days that we can spend our days and dissertations balking at how a character isn’t gay enough, is too gay, is too white, etc. And although we don’t actually have the type of representation GLAAD and I would like to see, we have a whole lot more than we did in México in 1992 (except, of course, Ricky gently caressing his long hair on stage… oh, and Locomía).

I am not critiquing the fact that we spend so much time criticizing queer portrayals in the media. To the contrary, I am celebrating the fact that we can. In fact, I’d go further and ask why queer people of color media performance and productions are so weak, lame and superficial. Having once curating a queer people of color cultural arts program, I know we can do better.

What I am critiquing is that our criticisms of Ricky’s coming out has us falling into the pitfall of imagining and defining all things queer through a U.S. lens. I even joked about the fact that he used the term “homosexual” to define himself. And now, in retrospect I find that identifying as a “fortunate homosexual” was much more powerful than a simple “gay.”

Perhaps for the jaded queen living in urban U.S., the oversaturation of gayness in the media has deemed Ricky insignificant and worthy of our dismissal. For that frightened and confused 12 year old in rural Chihuahua, it’s monumental.

My coming out process was stumped by the fact that I could not even imagine my queerness, let alone live it. At the time, the saturation of gayness was mostly strictly white. It wasn’t until queer brown men like Jaime Cortez and Emanuel Xavier fearlessly (or perhaps fearfully) exposed their work and their bodies to the sun of public criticism, that I was able to imagine myself.

Whether U.S. fags approve or not, Ricky is a prominent figure here, and more importantly, in Latino América. Ricky’s coming out makes it possible for young boys in countless homes to imagine themselves as something other than confused.

For this, I say to Ricky: gracias. And, you know where to find me.

Bitch Back

Dear Ted:
Should Robsten fans be worried about Rob's upcoming role with Reese? They've met before, and I don't trust her any further than I could throw her. Let me hear your two cents, Ted.
—Bubbly

Dear Something Out of Nothing:
Rob so isn't Reese's type. R.Pattz isn't good for Miss Sweetheart's image, at least not the one she's still peddling. Plus, she's moved in with Jim Toth. So trust, R.W. isn't going to be the demise of Robsten, far from it.

Dear Ted:
It was tough to choose between two of the hunkiest stars out there. Though I voted for Hugh Jackman, I do feel Johnny Depp's win was well-deserved. Have either of them (or both) ever been a B.V.?
—Curiouser and curiouser

Dear Too Good to Be True:
One of them most certainly has.
It's a doozy, too! Can you guess who the lucky lover is?

Dear Ted:
So why does George Clooney put up with some publicly awful GFs (if they could be called that) if they are proving to be such embarrassments? Now I read on Lainey that the Italian queen is twittering. Doesn't he have people who manage this sort of thing, or is he in on helping her get a certain amount of celebrity on her own—business as usual?
—S

Dear Riled Up:
Darling, everyone who dates Clooney gets their own fame out of it. George knows the game. His precious piece of arm candy, who can hardly speak a lick of English, fulfills her role on the carpet and reaps her rewards on the side, too. It's Hollywood!

Dear Ted:
It used to be that H'wood couplings were kept very hush-hush, so as not to ruin fans' fantasies of having a shot at being with them. It seems now, however, that celebrity "pairings" are elbowing their way toward that photo op or down the aisle. And I find it interesting that the ones who do this are the very ones whose sexual preferences are persistently whispered about in the blogosphere. I realize there are scores of naive fans out there who'll believe every butt-kissing People article they read, but I personally just feel insulted. Does Hollywood truly think we're that gullible?
—Jenny W.

Dear Smarty-Pants:
In a word: absolutely.

Dear Ted:
I read your B.V.s, and the guesses. I'm much less informed than some of these other Nancy Drews, so I usually don't know where to start when it comes to guessing. But it seems to me that a lot of times, the guessers come to a consensus on a candidate. Would you say that generally the consensus guess is right? Half the time? What?
—Drew apprentice

Dear Nancy Drew in the Making:
I don't think I can narrow it down that easily. Certainly people have written in with the correct answer. But I would say most of the time it's not usually who people are so certain it is...with very few exceptions.

Dear Ted:
Is Moisty Mohr Bill O'Reilly? He reeks of skeeze both through the vibe he gives off and his bigoted remarks.
—M

Dear So Close:
But you're off just a tad. Actually, this is one Vice where I don't think anyone has correctly figured the answer, pretty friggin' unusual. So I promise you this: Whoever does guess accurately gets answered publicly.

I thought he was hyper (nervous?) and somewhat desperate to be funny on Letterman. He kept interrupting Letterman and visibly got peeved when Letterman stole his thunder by starting that cement joke. Then after recovering his equilibrium, Jake also pounced on that joke--and behaved like an overactive child. The photos--particularly the one with Homer Simpson, were funny. But I didn't care for the anti-Russia jokes. I have Russian relatives and there's no such thing in their culture that says laughing or smiling makes you look stupid. Not funny and not true.

I really appreciate it when creators of infographics make things so easy to decipher in their little charges, like Gallup did here to show the "moral acceptability" (hah!) of gay relationships has "crossed the symbolic 50% threshold in 2010," according to its annual Values and Beliefs survey, which also found a 16 point spike in support from Catholic Americans. Now if they could only use colors besides green, that would really help color blind-ish folks like me tell which slanty line is which.

Has there ever been a gay character on Over The Hill? I can't stand that show, for many reasons. The girls all look alike, Sophia Bush's crackle voice, people especially that age don't talk to each other the way they do (too stilted and formal and no nicknames or shortening of names)..the list goes on. Have there been any gay characters on it? (I don't think so, and that would be another one of my beefs)

Okay, I'm exaggerating, but just a little.

I went out to lunch, found some signs pointing up the street that said White Collar set, and yup, I found it all right, and they were actually filming outside. My lucky day! Bomer and Dekay and a woman I didn't recognize.

Bomer is just as gorgeous in person as in pictures. Those long legs, the hair, the face. Sigh....

I wish I could have gotten closer, but they kept us gawkers away across the street (luckily not a big street).

I have an ancient phone, and no camera. Long story short, I was six blocks from my office and short on money, but I ran back to the sidewalk vendor I buy lunch from almost every day and borrowed the money for a disposable camera. LOL.

I watched and tried to take some shots between the traffic. At one point after a take some vans blocked the view, and when they moved the actors were gone--presumably to their trailers parked on another block, but I never did catch up with them to perhaps get a better shot or autograph.

It's funny, because they're filming in the neighborhood where I live tomorrow, and I'd been sitting here at work trying to figure out if I should play hookey and come into work late. Hmmm, does lightning strike twice?

[sorry if this is a double post, it didn't come through the first time, but my comment about OTH did, so trying again]

Jake Gyllenhaal Makes It Clear: "I Wear Pants" said...

From all the posters popping up, it looks like Jake Gyllenhaal's chiseled physique and leather garments were a major part of the Prince of Persia marketing strategy.

As for his muscle-displaying accoutrements, Jake's quick to set things straight. "Let me clear this up for the record," he tells E! News. "I don't wear a loincloth in this movie, OK? I wear pants."

Not only does he favor pants, Jake points out:

"There are no sandals involved, either. I wear boots, and my boots are pretty badass, to use an alliteration."

Got that? Those hoping for loincloths and sandals, just move along.

But how did Jake pull off the other part of the equation, getting into top physical form? Your basic regimen of cardio, sword fighting and parkour, aka "street running," of course. You know, getting from point A (let's say a rooftop) to point B (perhaps a Starbucks three blocks away) in the fastest way possible, obstacles (walls included) be damned.

So to get ripped like Jake, forget the trip to the gym once every eight weeks. Just run to work, remembering to jump over trashcans, bus benches or fellow pedestrians—and you'll soon find yourself bulked up and ready for your own sleeveless leather breastplate. With pants.

Sophia Bush: Austin Nichols Took One Tree Hill Job for Me! said...

Kissing costars Sophia Bush and Austin Nichols aren't hiding their relationship anymore, but who knew they've actually been dating for years?

It was news to us when the One Tree Hill star shared that tidbit last night at E!'s 20th birthday bash.

"We've been dating off and on for the past four years," Sophia told me at the London West Hollywood hotel.

Sophia was understandably wary about dating a costar after what she refers to as the "Chad [Michael Murray] debacle," but Austin made a grand gesture that convinced her to go for it...

"I was pretty terrified," she admitted, referring to her marriage to her former costar. But it turns out that Austin actually took a job on One Tree Hill to be with her!

"We had so many years of history prior to him coming to work on the show," she explained, "and I think someone taking a job and moving their life across the country to show you how much they care is pretty much the most romantic gesture that a person could make."

Now that the two are out-in-the-open love interests on and off the small screen, could a real engagement be coming in real life too? Stay tuned!

Jason Mraz: I was Beat Up, Bullied at School, Called 'Faggot'

Jason Mraz attended the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Friday. On Sunday, Mraz took to his blog to write about why he stands up for LGBT equality.

"When I was in high school, I experienced being bullied. For whatever reason, there were a few students that enjoyed calling me 'faggot' as I walked thru the lunchroom. On one occasion, just before graduation, I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and picked up a few punches, kicks and scrapes to add to my story. I never knew why the handsome lads called me names or felt the need to bully me, but it happened and I let their actions contribute a great deal to my moving away from that community. Shortly after the row, my best friend came out, sharing with his friends and family that he was gay. In my small town, this was uncommon and since then I’ve considered my friend to be the bravest man in the world. Aware of the hate within our community, I was afraid my friend might be inviting trouble to his door – but that never stopped him from being fully expressed. This is why I am actively seeking equality for the whole. When all of us are acknowledged as the human equals that we really are, there will be no space left for bullying. It will no longer be wrong to choose one thing over another. Equality and Separation cannot exist in the same space."

Mraz calls on people to join the fight for LGBT equality.

Jake Gyllenhaal has officially taken over Toronto doing a whirlwind media tour of the city in targeting every demographic possible with interviews on CBC's The Hour, eTalk Live, MTV Live and Entertainment Tonight Canada. Dividing his time predominantly in half hour slots with each outlet, Gyllenhaal had his time managed with precision in an effort to sway a portion of the female audience who will be flocking this weekend to see Sex and The City 2, instead to see Disney's Prince if Persia, in which he stars.

I caught Gyllenhaal at MTV today after a very condensed appearance on the station's staple program MTV Live with hosts Daryn Jones and Nicole Holness. Trying constantly to steer the topic of conversation to a more professional tone, the handsome actor had no idea what he signed up for with the intimate audience. And although Jones complained about not having enough time with Gyllenhaal, they seemed to have time to waste airing a near-two minute parody done by one of the station's interns on a mock-workout of Jake's. Funny? Not so much.

Repeatedly throughout the program, girls would call out inappropriately, "Jake, show us your abs!", which later escalated to "Jake, show us your snake!" after he described the process of working with a Snake Trainer. Taking the situation in stride, he responded "Well played. I like your style". The show's frustrated hosts eventually had to silence the rowdy audience, which again saw girls interrupting Gyllenhaal as he was trying to thank Canadians for their support. Jokingly, he pointed at his abs, stating "I realize that this is a big weekend for the ladies.... but this (pointing at his abs) is Sex in the City. Why see Sex and The City 2 when you can watch Prince of Persia twice?". Charmer.

Prince of Persia opens in wide release Friday, May 28, 2010 in what is expected to be a very busy weekend at the Box Office. Check out some of these photos I snapped of Gyllenhaal on his way to his eTalk appearance this afternoon. As always, he is as gracious as he can be with his assertive handlers. He even wrote me a little note as a keepsake, in addition to posing for a photo with me. Aww. I wish just once he'd take his sunglasses off when outdoors... one can always dream!

Nothing like a pathetic troll who can't stay away from OMG and WFT2, right Jack?

Are we ruining your fantasies of a straight Jake because your internalized homophobia gets disgusted at the thought of lusting after a gay Jake?

Or is that fantasy of how you're just like Jake, a closeted gay man who justifies what he is doing by telling himself, hey, Jake does it, darn it!

LOL, Jake and Austin are the worst kept secret in America. TT&GG 4eva!

AAAAAh hahahaha this is a bolder outing than TedC has even come close to doing!!! :-D

Funny that Gray Goose is in front of a competitor's vodka ad.

Come ON Jakey, no one CARES if you're gay!! You're do a lot of good by coming out. As will Austin (who?).

The funny thing is that One Tree Hill, which Austin Nichols and Sophia Bush star, just had a storyline about a gay actor who had a beard (his co-star to be exact). And the whole point was to show you have to be true to yourself. Hilarious.

are Jake and Austin both wearing pinky rings? (looks like Austin's is on his right hand and Jake's is on his left)

I think Austin and Jake are an absolutely hot couple and they really ought to come out. They are a much better couple than Austin and Sophie or Jake and Reese/Kirsten/etc. C'mon guys. Show your love. No one cares!

it's funny how we all caught on to that! hahahaha! Jakey G. loooooves Austin! why keep it a secret? i just don't really understand that...unless they are afraid of scaring off the lady fans. well, i'm a lady fan of Jakey G., and i don't care if he is gay or straight, he is still HOT

Also they're bringing back the gay girl character (I forgot the actress's name!). Maybe Hilarie and Boner can compare notes of him being sorta out and Austin being in the closet.

Well, that's true, too. Which is why this part of the article is such utter bullshit: "Trying constantly to steer the topic of conversation to a more professional tone, the handsome actor had no idea what he signed up for with the intimate audience." Dear Ted:
Do you think Toothy Tile has made a deal with the devil? I mean, he's a family man—a father (according to you) and in a committed relationship with a wonderful partner. Yet he has to hide his loved ones in order to appear on billboards and movie posters all over the world. Do you think it's all about the adulation or the money? I can see him saying, I don't need all the money of a Fey Oiled Tush, but, how many actors could give up the kind of adulation that comes along with a major studio's backing? It's so sad that Hollywood forced him to make such a choice!
—TDB

Dear Sad-Face:
Are you nuts? This is business as usual in Hollywood, which has more self-hating gays than any other spot in the world—and that's saying plenty.

Dear Ted:
My guess for Toothy Tile and Grey Goose is Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Am I close, or way off? Love your column, it totally gets me thru the day. And thank you for all your shout outs and tireless efforts supporting animal shelters. I have a Russian Blue who is blind in one eye after being abandoned in a gutter and my family wouldn't be the same without him! Kisses.
—Lili

Dear BV Blunder:
Kisses to your kitty who sounds fab, which makes me sad to say your guess is a no-go. Maybe those dudes have other Vices?

Dear Ted:
First off, Happy Birthday AT! Been an avid fan since 2001, wish you at least 2 more decades of decadent reporting! We are still waiting for Toothy Tile to at least open a bit his closet door, for Jennifer Aniston to really fall head over heels with a good guy, for Angelina to finally drop Brad and hook up with...? Who knows, who cares. You were the first to report on the reality of Robsten, even if here in Canada we did not see a thing while they were filming, and Toothy still drawing unsuspected females like flies to honey! My favorite AT couple that never happened? Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz, that couple was all sex and very wild. NK never looked better. But tell us Ted, which Blind Vicer you would like to see revealed soon, and why? You always have calculating reasons we don't always see! Keep up the great work, and again, Happy Birthday!
—Rita

Dear Blow Out The Candles:
Thanks, Rita, hope to stick around for another 32 decades, too. Completely agree about Nic and Lenny—it was Nic's last sexy beast era. And as for the DL dude I'd most like to see come out? Heck, why not all of 'em. That'll mean things are changing in H'wood.

It's not often a horror film reaches into the depths of my soul, grabs my heart and shatters it into a billion terrified pieces.

An atrocious motion picture...makes The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert look like The Remains of the Day.

The first SATC film was such a downbeat snooze that one assumed it couldn't get worse. But it can -
and it does.

The only thing memorable about Sex and the City 2 is the number two part, which describes it totally, if you get my drift.

As tasteless as an Arabian cathouse, as worn-out as your 1998 flip-flops and as hideous as the mom jeans Carrie wears with a belly-baring gingham top, Sex and the City 2 is two of the worst movies of the year.

Honestly, by the time they ride camels, it's Ishtar in designer gowns.

Hot on the promotional trail, Jake Gyllenhaal was keeping busy in in Toronto, Canada on Tuesday afternoon (May 25).

The hunky actor smiled and waved as he arrived at MTV Canada to promote his new film, "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time".

The press outing comes amidst tabloid rumors that Jake got hot and heavy with actress Isabel Lucas in Montreal earlier this month.

Enjoying a night out at GoGo Lounge, a National Enquirer source tells, “Talk about a close encounter of the hottest kind — Jake and Isabel were all over each other!”

The insider adds, “And she was definitely the aggressor. Jake actually looked a little uneasy when Isabel did a mock lap dance — then suddenly shoved him off his chair and under their table, obviously wanting a little privacy while she worked her magic. They cooled for a bit, but you could see the heat rising. After a while, Jake helped Isabel to her feet and they left, looking like they needed a little more privacy than their table could provide.”

lol. Didn't Lainey report that Isabel was too shy to go out on the dance floor and that it was Jake trying to woo her out there? So she was too shy to go out on the dance floor, but not too shy to give him a lap dance? And not too shy to blow him under a table in a restaurant? Crap reviews and all, the problem is SATC has a huge fanbase.

Yeah, it sure does :/ I honestly don't get the huge appeal, but maybe I'm not familiar enough. I've only seen a few episodes of the TV show and I didn't see the first movie, but I know there were 'SATC parties' with big groups of women getting together to go to the movie and then party afterward. A girls' night out type of thing, I guess. But if it's as bad as those reviews sound, ticket sales could stop cold after the opening.

Anonymous said...

Maybe if they had made it a little more politically correct - maybe that's an idea for SaTC3. Conspicuous consumption isn't something to celebrate, and then to distill down another culture as well. :)

They're not pushing PoP just for the kiddies, though. If they were, Jake wouldn't have to keep talking about his abs every four seconds, lol. PoP is very obviously trying to take audience away from SATC2, plus grab the families/kids - not to mention the gamers. A little something for everyone! lol

Anonymous said...

I think PoP's major problem is that is not made in 3D. That's a big turn-off for a large number of movie goers that got blown away with "Avatar" and "Clash of Titans" very recently.

I hate 3D,though.But I see that most people likes it better :(

Anonymous said...

Oh, and that piece of shit of Burton's Alicia was in 3D too. I guess PoP would have been a hit in 2008 but now it seems like an old movie...

I still think it will be a success, just not as big as the studio was hoping..

Anonymous said...

Didn't "Clash of the Titans" just do so-so at the box office, though? Or maybe it just got poor reviews? I didn't keep track.

Anonymous said...

I hope producers will only call for 3D when it really suits the movie. I liked it in Avatar, but I don't know for anything else. I might have keeled over in my seat if one of Robin Hood's arrows came at me in 3D! lol

POP is also all about consumption, getting kids to buy Legos and video games, not tp mention all the cross-selling of all the Disney brands like ESPN. It was no accdent that the legos and extended skit about POP was on Kimmel on ABC.

You are right, reviews are ok for being a kind of movie that critics like to trash to make themselves sound more intelligent.
But,also, this type of movies don't really depend on good reviews to be a success.

I know! A resident of the building came out while he was standing there, and told him he liked his show, and, I think, said he liked it better than his own show. It was a middle-aged guy and I didn't recognize him. Either I heard him wrong (very possible), or he was a behind the scenes guy.

But if it'd been Bomer I think I might have worked up the courage.

$60 million would not be considered good for a Memorial Day opening. I think that is about what the original SATC made on its first weekend. It wasn't considered a very good opening for Titans either, but it made up for it with the overseas sales--something POP, at least so far, doesn't look like it will do.
