Jake Gyllenhaal in Source Code
Darkness.

A SOUND slowly builds: the rhythmic rocking of a TRAIN'S WHEELS over RAILROAD TRACKS...

INT. HIGH SPEED TRAIN - MORNING

COLTER jolts awake. Sunlight hits his face.

He blinks. A stunned beat. He's disoriented.

Slowly he turns his head to one side...

PASSENGERS. Filling most of the seats. Office workers on their morning commute into a city.

Turning the other way, he‘s confronted with a window. Trees flash by, splitting the rising sunlight into a hypnotic strobe pattern.

Colter looks to be thirty years old. A military buzz cut. A disciplined physique, lean and spare, almost gaunt. Skin burnished by years of desert sandstorms and equatorial sun. His expression, prematurely aged by combat, is perpetually wary, sometimes predatory, accustomed to trouble.

Despite his military bearing, Colter wears a button down shirt and navy sports coat. On his wrist is a digital watch. It reads 7:40 a.m.

He swallows. A strange, creeping panic.

He has no idea where he is.

Wasn't there a lot of early chat about Brothers being great and it fizzled. Way too early to get excited about LAOD and its chances of success. Plenty of time left for the suits to muck it up. Still, it sounds a lot more promising than POP.

Let's hope for the best for LAOD. It's about time for Jake to have a critically acclaimed film again after Zodiac.

On Closeted Actors in Hollywood…

Jess: Why do you think so many actors and actresses are still closeted in Hollywood?
J. Beals: Fear. I think they’re afraid.

Jess: Do you think it’s important for actors and actresses to come out publicly?
J. Beals: I think it’s important to make the decision that’s best for them… But I think they stay closeted probably out of fear, and I hope that one day they won’t be fearful.

Jess: Had you been gay, do you think you’d choose to come out publicly?
J. Beals: It would be that or perish, honestly. I mean, I think I would have to but I can’t possibly presume what that would be like for me… And it also depends on so many things, not only your sexual orientation but it also depends on your class, like how much money do you have? Because some actors may not even feel like they can afford to do it. And they go to that place where they go “oh, I need this job…” – and they get into that mindset. If you’re independently wealthy you can be independently everything.

If there is,indeed, a coming out I bet it will be

A)a random tv or talk show actor barely known for the public

B) some long forgotten actor from some equaly forgotten sit-com of the 80's

C) A "closeted" D-listed celebrity everybody is aware of it's gayness

D) Some Z-listed in need of some publicity

I doubt we'll be shocked about this "Big Coming Out of the closet"...if there is any.

"Brothers" did very well in BO and had very good reviews in general. I'm sure LAOD is going to be one of those movies that are well received by critics and the public, does a descent profit but then is quickly forgotten once is no longer in theaters.

POP is going to be Jake's test of fire. He better starts concentrating on that one...

WOOOOOW,6:36 PM! Don't take it so personal!!!

It's not a lie, I remember "Brothers" being in 3 or 4 place on BO for a few weeks. It was a good profit for a relative small movie.
Critics were ok, nobody went crazy about it, but they weren't so harsh.Of course, it didn't become a classic, not even a cult film, but it turned out just fine.
Maybe they should have made it in 3D or something..

You know, I have no idea what LAOD will turn out to be but I seriously doubt it'll EVER be another film as groundbreaking and conversation-starting as BBM nor do I think Jake's role in LAOD (and I suspect performance) the equivalent to his role and work in BBM. That was truly a benchmark role/performance for him and I just don't see PoP, Source Code and LAOD (which sounds like a good showcase...for Anne) being on the same level. Sorry, I really wish Jake would start picking roles that would stretch his range. If I never saw him in BBM, I would think his range was very limited.

"Sorry, I really wish Jake would start picking roles that would stretch his range. If I never saw him in BBM, I would think his range was very limited."

You are right, but keep in mind that the real good roles are not an everyday thing in HW. Sometimes, actors have to make shitty movies simply because of the increased mediocrity of the Industry that don't offer them interesting projects.

Jake tried the quality roles with Jarehead,Rendition & Zodiac. Sadly, critic and/or public didn't always give him the thumbs up.
He just had a little of bad luck, so now, it looks the guy wized up and said: Fuck off, I'll just go for the money! = POP.

Anonymous said...

Rendition was a bad film--and Jake's role was not very good. I think he and the others thought it would be a prestige Oscar film but it was anything but. Zodiac was interesting but a long and lumbering pretentious mess. Jake was miscast--sadly, he was the weakest link in a very strong cast. He was better in Jarhead but that film wasn't good.

BBM is his best film.

The next day we went for a nice walk in Central Park (I took a great photo of what it looked like with all the snow) and then headed to the Lower East Side to wander around. While we were at Katz's deli enjoying a fantastic sandwich, Jake Gyllenhaal was there with a photographic crew who were taking photos of him wearing some really snappy clothes. He laughed a lot, and was very kind to everyone in the restaurant. My RRHB said, "How come he didn't recognize me?" When he first noticed he was there. Funny. On the way out, one of Blair's cronies from Gossip Girl was hanging outside Katz's with her friends, her name is ridiculous, and so I am not going to type it. Judge me if you will. Then, coming back up Broadway we walked right by Chloe Sevigny.

Biggest Names in Hollywood Gather for the Eighth Annual "Night Before" Fundraiser to Support the Motion Picture & Television Fund

As Tinsel Town gets ready for its biggest night of the year, Academy Award® nominees and presenters joined some of the most well-known film stars in the world for the eighth annual "Night Before" party to benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF). Money raised supports the extensive programs and services MPTF provides to more than 60,000 members of the entertainment industry every year.

The event has been held annually the night before the Academy Awards® since 2003 when it instantly became one of the most coveted invitations in town and kicks off what is now a much-anticipated awards season tradition.
...
"Over the last seven years I believe the Night Before, built around the Oscar celebration, reminds us all that ours is a collaborative community, and for more than 60,000 industry members, MPTF is where they turn to for personal support, their health care and other services," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation and Chairman of the MPTF Foundation. "And all this is made possible by the support of our corporate sponsors, the companies and hundreds of individuals who give so generously to make the Night Before one of the most successful fundraisers each year in Hollywood."

The "Night Before" benefit brought out the world's biggest stars from film, television, music and sports. Seen at this year's party were: Sandra Bullock, Steven Spielberg, George Clooney, Penelope Cruz, Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Lopez & Mark Anthony, Jake Gyllenhaal, Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, Jamie Foxx, Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, Eddie Murphy, Anna Kendrick, Christopher Waltz, Colin Firth, Vera Farmiga, Jason Reitman, Stanley Tucci, Rita Wilson & Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Lautner, Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick, Javier Bardem, Halle Berry, Diane Keaton, Kristin Davis, Tina Fey, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Christian Slater, Gerard Butler, Kate Beckinsale and Matt Damon, among many others.

"The most beautiful among them was Zachary Quinto. And last night Madonna decided that Zachary Quinto would be her pet. Can you imagine how it must be to know that she’s decided you’re worthy? He was probably freaking out inside. On the outside however Zachary played it perfectly. Deferential, yes, but cool. Not fawning. No excessive laughter, smiling very selectively, and totally, totally aware that the entire room had heard her declaration: Zachary Quinto has been invited.

I don’t think I can adequately describe to you the amazingness of the moment. Madonna in a fur collared coat, preening at a harem of gorgeous men who are there to do her bidding, hand picking the ones allowed to stand close to her, rejecting the ones she deemed unworthy, and ultimately settling on a new favourite. We witnessed the coronation of Zachary Quinto."

Ronan Keating strips off for gay magazine said...

MUSCLY Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating strips off for a gay magazine - and admits he is "addicted" to staying in shape. The 33-year-old Irishman showed off his six-pack and tattoos in pics for Attitude mag and proved his obsession with working-out has definitely paid off.

"We realise we're older, and you can let yourself go a little bit, so we try that little bit harder," he said. "I get a bit addicted to it." As well as his tattoo of an "S" with the dates 76 to 09, which he and bandmates got as a tribute to tragic pal Stephen Gately, Ronan also talked about his latest body artwork.

"On the back I have, 'The future is unwritten', which is a Joe Strummer quote.

"I only got it two weeks ago. Ever since Steo passed away I've realised that more than ever. You've got to take every day as it comes and live as if it's your last."

The star said he and Boyzone's remaining members, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham, had helped each other deal with their grief since Stephen's death last October. "We find comfort in the four of us together," he added. "He's in the room when we're together. We feel him with us all the time."

No, the story is vapid and overwrought, and Waller's sappy, witless prose (in the novel) made me want to encase his hands in cement so he couldn't inflict more of his fatuous housewife fantasies on us.

Chris Pine is a gorgeous man - but Zach just has "it" for me. I am looking forward to his role as George Gershwin!

Also, I don't think we need to worry about Jake distancing himself from BBM. Can't be done anyway. A successfull working actor must play many roles, and one of them now is, (oh the horror!) a heterosexual man.

Anonymous said...

If I never saw him in BBM, I would think his range was very limited.

Jake was great in Brokeback Mountain, but the fact remains that his range is limited. The character he played in BBM is hardly a huge stretch from his characters in other movies. Sometimes they are darker and more mysterious, sometimes sunnier and sweeter, but they are all basically variations on a theme. A nice, attractive theme, and lots of leading men, from Gary Cooper to Brad Pitt, do the same. It's hardly the end of the world and Jake can have a long career without being a De Niro or Brando.

Jake said...

De Niro or Brando? They never played a superhero!

Anonymous said...

Well, certain slash is like that too. ;)

;) Glad you said that. Bridges of Madison IS on the level of slash. But Waller thought he was writing great literature. My ass!

If he'd just admit that he is a fine slash writer, and no more, I'd be okay with him.

Now I'm wondering if he's written any actual slash.

10:14, I disagree with you. Jack Twist was very different from his other characters and not just because he was gay. Jack goes from being an optimistic dreamer to being a hardened, embittered alcoholic AND Jake had to play two different kinds of accents--one from Wyoming when Jack was 19 and later from Texas when Jack was living with Lureen in Childress. AND Jake had to convey age--which he did VERY well in the latter scenes (even better than Heath in this regard). The role of Jack Twist was far more demanding than Jake's previous (and sadly, subsequent roles) and he was up to the challenge. I don't know if that was because Ang Lee was a taskmaster or Heath brought it out of him (or both) but whatever range Jake had/has, he stretched it with Jack Twist.

Yes, all of this. Heath disappeared completely and all we saw was Ennis. Even if you look at stills, there's no Heath there - and it's not just b/c of wardrobe/make-up. He is actually able to make himself "look" different somehow in his roles. Amazing. Not many actors can achieve that.

So! 1st week on Source Code: built a train, and it's a beauty, but a bugger to shoot on. JG & MM are such a good laugh! Love em to bits.

SC has more humour in it than we saw on the page, & that's been great fun! Shot some of our effects tests & they're wonderfully horrible!

10:27, I'm not saying that Jake didn't stretch with his role in BBM. He did. He did great work, and he developed his character arc very well. But that is different from disappearing into a role the way De Niro does as Travis Bickle, as Jake LaMotta, as Rupert Pupkin. Or to give a more contemporary example, the way Ed Norton does as Derek Vinyard in American History X, or Daniel Day-Lewis does in almost every role he takes. Even Robert Downey Jr, can play a fair gamut of types (though these days I think he is always RDJ).

Having range is different from playing a certain role well. Brad Pitt has played a cowboy, a detective, a vampire, a redneck killer, a beautiful fly fisherman, Death, a boxer, Achilles, Jesse James, a man born old...but he's still not considered to be an actor of great range. It takes more than speaking in an accent and getting old on screen and wearing a wig.

There's Meryl Streep, and then there are the rest. It's some kind of magic, and only a few have it.

May I add, that while I think Jake did lots of things excellently in BBM, conveying age was not one of them. He still looked like a young boy playing old. I didn't buy him as mature or as a cowboy. What I did buy was the feelings. Jake is great at is conveying emotion, and in the right role (as Jack, for example), the emotion is so powerful, the rest just doesn't matter. Since conveying emotion is what acting is all about, you could argue that Jake does all he needs do. ;)

SC has the potential to be an entertaining flick. I'm sure the cast will deliver good performances and Jake and Michelle make beautiful leads with their beautiful blue eyes and dark hair. :)

Some here won't like to hear this, but most performances depend a lot on whom you are acting against. ;) Without Heath, you wonder if Jake will ever be able to equal his BBM performance in another movie. To be fair, you could say the same for Heath. I think he would have gone on to be one of the greats, but with no Jake opposite him, I also doubt he would have topped himself as Ennis in any other romance. (Sheesh, that sounds bizarre - no puns intended.)

Anonymous said...

I don't know. He'd have to work a lot on his soft voice and puppy dog eyes to be convincing.

Not true. For a formulaic, chiched villain, yes - but you know what they say, it's always the ones who you never thought, never gave anyone any trouble, the nice neighbor or coworker, who sometimes do the worst of things.

Anonymous said...

Both H & J did great acting jobs in BBM, but the feelings were convincing just because they loved each other in real life very much. So, in this regard they probably wouldn't have topped their performances in BBM.
And before someone attacks, I'm not alluding they had an affair or anything. So relax!

A lot of people have asked me whether or not I had a fling with Sean Connery during the filming of Marnie (1964), and the answer is no. Marnie was so frigid and cold that she screamed when a man came near her. If I had strong feelings for him in real life, it would have shown through my eyes in the film. I was too dedicated to acting. So, no, I don't really know what it's like to kiss Sean Connery.

Anonymous said...

Unpopular opinion probably, I think Heath topped himself in BBM with the Joker (lol). That performance is one of the MOST brilliant I've ever seen. You literally can’t take your eyes off him in that.

Anonymous said...

^^She had a reason to scream. One of my favorite movies - Alfred Hitchcock was great.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, I so agree Anon. 11:41 - he was brilliant, it's hard for me to choose my favorite Heath performance, but I love Joker. He is mesmerizing, and Heath brought a kind of realism to him, so that he was just not a comicbook character - he lures you in with clown antics, and then goes in for the kill - doesn't make anyone laugh for long. I'm torn between never seeing Joker again, and having that kind of villain in a film again. ;)

He was absolutely brilliant as the Joker, better acting performance than Ennis IMO. And I personally think Jake was better in DD than BBM, but I was talking about portraying a love story in a movie. You totally bought their feelings for each other.

I think Heath and Maggie had great chemistry too in that one scene in TDK at the party and I disagree that Maggie is unattractive as Rachel. Maybe she’s not beautiful but she's definitely sexy.

Hello, beautiful!

I went to Harvey Weinstein's party last night at Soho House in West Hollywood. Amazing location... possibly one of the best parties ever..

Leo DiCaprio was there with Bar... Jake Gyllenhaal came over and Leo said hi and signaled for him to come over...

but Jake did not say anything and walked away. It was blatant that Jake was not happy with Leo... so what happened there!??

Oh that has got to be one of the sexiest scenes in film history. He has so much confidence in it. I always wonder, if there had been a back story, if he had met Rachel before sometime.

As far as I'm concerned, conveying emotions is the most important part of acting.

Maybe Leo was mean to Michelle? ;)

Oh come on, you can't be that naive. Jake has talked in interviews about the competition between him and Tobey. Besides, Tobey's nom was not deserved.

What that has to do with Leo? Jake is pissed off because Leo is Tobey's childhood friend? That doesn't make any sense.

Smelling salts!

Maybe Jake doesn't dig Leo, because he seems to full of himself? I think Michelle doesn't like him that much either from what I've seen. Tobey and Leo are pretentious.

Stop playing stupid, please. Leo threw a party with gifts for HFPA members before the GG nominations were announced, that’s what I meant, not Leo and Tobey being BFFs.

Did they ever. It would have been great to see them again together. I had to smile during the part where Harvey asks Alfred if there were any psychotic boyfriends in Rachel's past, and he says "oh you have no idea." Wondered if it was Joker. Hee!

^^Especially since she's the only one in the entire crowd brave enough to approach him and tell him to knock it off. There's almost a familiarity between them. Ah well . . . we'll never know. :(

There’s nothing to explain. Leo bought Tobey his GG nomination for Brothers and Jake didn’t appreciate it, simple as that. What’s so hard to believe about it? Jake seems very competitive and ambitious which is not always a bad thing.

Jake and Tobey are friends. Campaigning for nominations is standard business in Hollywood. There is no reason for Jake or anyone else to be pissed because Leo supports his best friend.

Leonardo DiCaprio. I don't care if Jake likes him or not, I expect Jake to be flattered and, if necessary, to pretend he likes Leo!

Remember that Regis and Kelly interview with MW? When Regis asked her if Leo was on her list of actors she wanted to work with, she did not answer it, just said SI is the men's film. She didn't even answer how it was kissing Leo. My personal opinion is that she isn't a big fan of him. From what I've seen I think Leo is taking himself too seriously.

2:48 PM, I'm sure you know what Jake was feeling/thinking.

Anonymous said...

The Leo/Jake discord is interesting--although it sounds like Leo called Jake over and Jake clearly snubbed him. Some think it's because Leo "bought" Tobey's GG nod. First off, Leo and Tobey are best friends from childbood. Leo wanted to help his bff (and why shouldn't he?) so he threw him a party honoring him and his performance in Brothers inviting the foreign press. That's called being a dear friend and we should all be thrilled to have someone like that looking out for us. (And BTW, Tobey is a terrific underrated actor--forget Spiderman-rent Cider House Rules, Wonder Boys or Ang's Ice Storm and you'll see what I mean--wonderful actor).

If that's the reason, then Jake has no cause. Leo doesn't owe him anything. Have they been bffs since childhood?

My guess is THAT's not the reason. Of his generation of actors, Leo (whether you like it or not) is the most influential and powerful, particularly when it comes to getting films made on the basis of his name (and collaborating with top of the line directors--Marty Scorsese hello--and recently Chris Nolan in "Inception"). It is very possible that Jake might have blamed being passed up for a role due to Leo, who as much as i LOVE his work (even when he's a bit miscast--he's still a commanding leading actor and has great range), probably could be bitchy and two-faced with his comments toward VIPs like Scorsese (who I bet Jake would KILL to work with--who wouldn't?)

The other possibility and I'm not convinced of this due to his very gallant behavior toward Michelle is that Leo might have badmouthed Heath following his death. But I don't think so. I suspect it's a little of professional jealousy on Jake's part and Leo having undue influence with powerful directors (and maybe being catty where Jake is concerned) who might want to hire Jake.

I'm sure Jake would have LOVED to have been in Inception.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps Jake did not like Leo calling him over like Leo was deigning to allow him into his presence. Make no mistake, just because it is a party does not mean its not a business event. These men are rivals. Jake would attend multiple events, dropping in for an appropriate length of time, then moving to the next obligation.
