I Dish, Therefore I Am

On March 10, 2005, gossip columnist Ted Casablanca ran an item online under the heading "One Adorable Blind Vice".

The story was similar to numerous blind items Casablanca has run since bringing his column, "The Awful Truth," to E! Online in 1996. He relates a potentially scandalous story, usually with the kinds of revelations a major media gossip columnist would avoid, but disguises the object of his gossip behind a fanciful name like Morgan Mayhem, Furrowed Frank or Toothy Tile.

The ongoing saga of Toothy Tile says a good deal about Internet gossip, its place within the gay community and its function as a moral compass. It also points to some interesting intersections of gossip and gendered performance.

Hollywood gossip, of course, was around long before the Internet. Usually dated from the start of Louella Parsons' syndicated column in 1925, the field has traditionally been female-dominated, with Parsons and her chief rival, Hedda Hopper, engaged in an often-uneasy power struggle with the movie industry. The film studios used them to promote their films and personalities but also dreaded the effect of a personal attack or untimely revelation. One unwritten rule, however, was that the most damaging items — criminal arrests, long-term affairs and homosexuality — were not for publication in any but the least reputable venues. Parsons, Hopper and most of Hollywood may have known that Ramon Novarro was gay, but they weren't about to publish the fact. And if a writer broke the rules — as Bill Robinson did when he wrote about Spencer Tracy's drinking problems and his relationship with Katharine Hepburn in a 1962 issue of Look — the offender was cut off from industry sources.

Even with the decline of the studio system, some restrictions still hold. Unless a star's drug use is impossible for the media to ignore, it's kept out of the gossip columns. And "outing" is still considered off-limits, at least to columnists working in the major media.

For the gay on-line community, gossip serves a variety of purposes. If nothing else, it provides its readers with a sense of titillation as they vicariously enjoy celebrities' lives, even when the object of interest is masked behind the veil of the blind item. Like many on-line discussion boards, gay gossip sites provide their geographically dispersed users with a sense of community.

One element unifying gossip communities is a shared sense of morality. Gay gossip unites the gay and lesbian community by establishing behavioral norms for that community, creating insiders aware of those norms and outsiders unaware of or opposed to them.

In the case of Toothy Tile, the nature of those norms depends on whether one is inside or outside the gay community. Within the world of heteronormativity, Toothy Tile is at fault both for being gay and, more important, for wishing to make a public proclamation of that fact.

Despite the social changes of the past 50 years, the entertainment industry appears to be dealing with sexual orientation by the same standards in operation when Universal Pictures forced Rock Hudson to take a wife to forestall suspicions of homosexuality. The current attitude is described quite simply in one publicity-shy, or rather gay-publicity shy actor's legal complaint against a porn star who had claimed a relationship with him: "While plaintiff believes in the rights of others to follow their own sexual preference, vast numbers of the public throughout the world do not share his view and, believing that he had a homosexual affair and did so during his marriage, they will be less inclined to patronize [his] films, particularly since he tends to play parts calling for heterosexual romance and action adventure. " No doubt, these are the same audiences who would expect the actor to know how to pilot a jet fighter in real life.

Who, then, is thought to be the perpetually closeted Toothy Tile? Consensus gives the honor to Jake Gyllenhaal.

So, what team is Jake playing for? How many beards do you see in this picture? And...well, do I really have to say anything.

"The fact that Heath was the actor Nolan wanted the most is irrelevant."

Can’t you read? I said "Heath was the only choice for the Joker" meaning Nolan wanted only Heath, not wanted Heath "the most". And you bet it’s relevant, because although other very talented, more famous actors expressed their interest in the role, it was offered to Heath from the beginning proving your stupid theory that the director wanted Heath because there were no gay rumors about him is bullshit. Are there gay rumors about Adrien Brody, Robin Williams or Paul Bettany? Not really. So why didn’t Nolan want one of them, not some actor who was most famous for playing a gay man? Answer this, genius.

What matters is that Nolan would not have wanted him at all if he were openly gay! If you think that Nolan would have handed the second most important part in an incredibly expensive, lucrative franchise film to an openly gay actor, or even one who had tons of persistent gay rumors sticking to him like lint, then you are completely insane. Absolutely nuts.

When the hell did I say that? WTF does this have to do with Heath anyway, and why would there be "tons of persistent gay rumors sticking to him like lint" since he wasn’t gay? You seem to obstinately ignore that fact.

Why am I explaining this to someone who obviously doesn’t know much about Heath or TDK? Anyone with a clue about the movie would know the name of the director is Chris Nolan not Mike Nolan, anyone but you that is.

Once again, you're ducking and weaving around the fact that openly gay actors do not star in Hollywood franchises! You could have twenty academy awards. If you don't look straight and run away from *persistent* gay rumors in Hollywood, you don't get HW franchises. Period. Get used to it, and stop creating excuses for homophobia in HW.

Really, please point out to me what part of my comment shows that "I’m ducking and weaving around the fact that openly gay actors do not star in Hollywood franchises!" Stop playing stupid, I was talking strictly about TDK and Heath who WASN’T a gay actor, out or closeted.

Your bullshit spinning goes on and on and it's still bulshit. You get a brain and quit inventing.

These are also *facts*, and whether you like it or not, they aren't going anywhere.

lmao, you talk about facts? You better look up the word because you have no knowledge of its meaning. Nothing you posted is fact, just ridiculous insinuations.

JGL is in little movies and I'm glad. But, he is only known because of his TV career. Otherwise, he would be just some indie actor.

He will be a lot better known after he receives an Oscar nomination this yeae. Which many are predicting.

Well after 2 1/2 years of bearding there are still gay rumours about Jake. There are many who believe Jake is bearding and write about it. So are those persistant doubts about him and the whole Reeke circus that goes on with them still putting off many HW? Personally I wonder why anyone would want to work with an actor who is so tabloid hungry. And how come the Chin keeps getting hired if she's such a cold bitch to work with?

9:39: Simmer down sparky, the postr has some facts wrong, but the gossip about Tobey and the President of Universal has been around awhile and if you actually have ties in the business you would have heard it as well. Ron Meyer is Jennifer's Levin's Dad and now Tobey's wife. Ron "had" Tobey before Jenny, obviously had nothing to do with him getting Spiderman.

Jenny was a nice safe non-actress whose Dad was a HW bigwig, goodbye Leo and Hello Jenny!

The gossip was repeated on other sites including DL and the Spiderman thing was added in, no surprise.

Tobey is BI, no surprise.

Jake also lobbyed hard for SM2 with the help of Kiki. He even did a screen test. Once all problems were settled with Tobey he did SM2 and 3 of course. If I remember Tobey used the excuse of a back problem for his relectence for doing 2 but he actually had a drinking problem and went into re-hab, that plus he wanted more $$$$.

Tobey must have been pissed at his ex GF Kiki pushing her current BF for the role when she knew he was having a substance abuse problem, some she would be familiar with.

The actual screen test poppoed up on IHJ for about 2 minutes ack then before they were forced to pull it.

Anonymous said...

Tobey must have been pissed at his ex GF Kiki

Nah, Tobey was greedy and would never got Spiderman without his BFF Leo - he had no reason to be pissed at Kiki.

Anonymous said...

The actual screen test poppoed up on IHJ for about 2 minutes ack then before they were forced to pull it.

Did anyone manage to see it?

Anonymous said...

Leo had nothing to do with Tobey getting SM2. He had plenty of reason to be pissed at Kiki, friends don't do that to each other. After dating briefly during SM1, they remained friends. They also both had substance abuse problems, she should have been more sensitive.

Do you remember when kiki finally went into rehab for "depression"? She made a statement in public apologizing to Tobey, no details. some wondered what that was about. Some speculated that in rehab you have to fess up to all kinds of fucked up things in order to heal and the thinking was that she still felt guilty for doing that behind a friends back. Sure he was greedy and wanted more $$$$ but he was also in rehab as well she should have known better.

BBM fans I would think did not see that clip on IHJ, since they became interested in him because of BBM, a lot weren't aware of IHJ.

Those who saw it said he would have been a good substitute for Tobey.

All water under the bridge now, I would assume Tobey has forgiven both Jake and Kiki, he has every reason to, things are great for him now.

Leo had nothing to do with Tobey getting the Spiderman franchise , more BS.

Anonymous said...

Leo had everything to do with Tobey getting the Spiderman franchise.

Anonymous said...

Leo had nothing to do with Tobey getting SM2.

Studio never planned to replace Tobey.

Spiderman was a big BO success and they used screen testing as part of the negotiation process, to lower Tobey's demands.

Anonymous said...

After dating briefly during SM1

Did they really date, or was it "Kiki and Ryan Gosling" kind of "dating"?

Anonymous said...

8:58: Correct. The screen test was just a negotiation tactic. Poor Jake was used, he actually thought he had a chance!! And yes Kiki and Tobey did date during SP1, about time it was released, it was over.

Anonymous said...

Do you remember when kiki finally went into rehab for "depression"? She made a statement in public apologizing to Tobey, no details.

There is nothing wrong with recommending a friend for a screen test after Tobey refused to do SM2 without a raise. If studio ever considered replacing Tobey (I'm sure they didn't), Jake was one of many actors doing the screen test.

Anonymous said...

And yes Kiki and Tobey did date during SP1, about time it was released, it was over.

I don't know anything about Kiki and Tobey's relationship, but that sounds like a Hollywood's textbook showmance :)

Anonymous said...

9;22: The problem with that was Jake was more than a friend to Kiki, she was his GF at the time. So what she was doing was suggesting that Jake would be a good replacement with a push from Jake I can imagine. The powers that be had no intention of replacing Tobey of course but used Jake and Kiki. It just sounded tacky to people who didn't know what was realy going on. Jake also wanted to do a superhero type movie. His name was attached to Superman, Batman, Green Hornet, Spideman and Captain Marvel. I heard the reason he wasn't picked for Superman because he was too "ethnic" looking, ie too Jewish as it was read back then.

Pop is as close as it gets as far as his superhero dream.

Other actors may have done a screen test, but the one Jake did was the only one surfaced briefly on IHJ.

That's Hollywood. Studio saved some money, Jake got a lot of good publicity.

Jake doesn't have a body for Superman, you can't fake that.

Anonymous said...

True, but body type wasn't the reason given for him not getting Superman. The word was too ethnic looking. If that wasn't the reason Jake could have bulked for the part no big deal.

I used to post on the site Oscarwatch now called Awards daily. At the time there was someone posting there who was involved in production. They said that Jake's name was on the list along with others and he was rejected for being too "ethnic" looking, he said that was code for Jewish.

Can't have a Jewish looking Superman. They went with Routh after he bulked up.

Stop playing dumb. HW is full of gay men in high places but that doesn't stop the bearding. They are the worst offenders at not hiring actors with gay rumors.

It's no secret that Jewish bigwigs have no problem slighting there own when it comes to casting. Jake looking too Jewish was the deal breaker. Saying he was too thin and too short is just a way of you trying to deny that Jake looks Jewish because he is. The same anti-semetic DC posters here.

When they found out he ws Jewish over there, they freaked out.

Jake is Jewish and looks Jewish, always will look Jewish and that was the reason why he wasn't chosen for Superman. Get over it already.

Someone is already playing Superman 10:57, duh. Yeah his face is all wrong: Eastern European Jewish wrong.

He had no problem with his body and voice for Jarhead for instance, he had to bulk up and play tough for that role. Didn't matter if he looked to Jewish for that role, Superman is an All-American looking superhero.

Brandon had the looks but he had the look and he deepened his voice for those who remembered him on One life to live.

Jake is looking more Jewish as he gets older especially when he wears that fedora, he looks Hasidic, which is more than fine with me. The thing is there are posters here who hate that fact and hiding behnd he's too thin or to short is pathetic. It's the same postrs that are still pissed that Obama won because he is African-American

You make no sense - people who don't like Jews aren't Jake fans nor followers.

Most of Jake fans could care less, i'm talking about the ones that became fans after BBM came out and kne very little about him before then. I remember poaters expressing shock that he was Jewish. They then would say things like "Well he's only half-Jewish or he's apractsing Buddhist, any thing but Jewish, God forbid. Very telling and disturbing.

I should point out that the DC posters were white males and politically to the right, so no surprise there. They referred to Jake's mom and Natalie as Jewess, who the hell uses that term anymore? I assume they were in their 60's or so. Anyway they were vile, racist anti-semetic and mysoginists and freepers, used to make nasty comments about Michele as well. Sad creatures always playing down Jakes Jewish side, hypocrites posting on a gay forum.

Well she has propositioned a number of actors with movies coming out that she will be more than happy to be their girlfriend as long as they take her to any event getting press for their movie.

The Playlist - "Brothers" trailer comments:

I didn't expect the Pearl Harbor vibe either. It still looks strong though. I have to admit I was rather tickled by the prospect of Maguire and Gyllenhaal playing brothers due to the interchangeability of the actors. But Gyllenhaal seems to have lost his boyish charm, which may fit the movie better, but isn't nearly as funny.
---

I don't like Gyllenhaal much, but i think he looks really good in this. The second half of the trailer is great. Tobey M seems like he might be playing it too wild, which jives with all the test screening reviews and comments that found him to be the weakest thing about the film.

I *think* cutting around him might have been one of the delays or just trying to finesse the cutting around his performance.
---

I would definitely wait to watch the Danish version until after this as it will spoil the entire film for you.

I actually think that this is the potential danger for this film, being too much like the original. I think critics will make the inevitable comparisons be it fair or not.

I remember my guy once told me that the script was the weakest part of the film and having read the Benioff version I can definitely see that. Asides from various emphasis changes, which I also get from the trailer (since I know where every scene fits in the movie having watched the original and read the script), the changes are subtle and might be overlooked leaving the film open to criticism of unoriginality.

That being said, I think this might have some award potential especially in a weak Oscar year (which I expect this year to be). I don't see Best Pic or anything, but if the acting is good then maybe that'll get some love. It doesn't hurt that Mike DeLuca seems to be making some sort of Hollywood comeback and Relativity/Lionsgate seem to be putting many of their eggs in this one basket.

Put me down as cautiously optimistic.

My main quibble with the trailer itself is that it essentially gives away the whole movie.

Hey Jerry Bruckheimer, Why Do Movie Games Suck?

It’s a good question! One that Jerry Bruckheimer - with his silver screen experience and interest in the games business - is well-placed to answer.

Speaking with Games Radar, the ginger fox (and overseer of the upcoming Prince of Persia flick) answers with “I couldn’t tell you that. They just haven’t quite captured the imagination of the audience yet, but they will. I think it will definitely happen, whether we do it or other people do it.”

Well, hopefully you do it. I’m not paying $US10-15 just to see Jake Gyllenhaal prance around with his shirt off… more than one or two times.

Fri. 9:01pm- I totally agree. Nolan could be overruled at any time. If Heath was openly gay, or had as much gay baggage around as Jake had and still has in spite of the bearding, Nolan could not have hired Heath.

Heterosexuality is the norm for male actors who want to star in franchise films. Jake can either play the game or leave. Neither his talent nor his looks are enough to change the rules.

I also agree that people stop creating special rules or exceptions for Jake. Even with his talent, the gay rumors were hurting his chance to get a franchise. Anyone who disputes these cold hard facts is delusional.

Craig Ferguson Late Late Show - Michael Musto

Gay icons: Navratilova, Versace, Tatchell, and er, Graham Taylor said...

Gay celebrities pick heroes, with scientists, designers and football managers next to porn stars at National Portrait Gallery

The man who made Sir Elton John's dreams come true is up on the wall of the National Portrait Gallery, in an exhibition titled Gay Icons. Along with inspirations for gay people over the year, such as the Village People, Virginia Woolf and Martina Navratilova ‑ pictured in a truly terrible bright-blue fleece pullover ‑ there is also the indubitably heterosexual football manager Graham Taylor.

The gallery approached 10 proudly gay public figures, including actor Sir Ian McKellen, poet and novelist Jackie Kay, former culture secretary Chris Smith, and Booker prizewinning author Alan Hollinghurst, and invited each to choose six of their own heroes.

Although it was stressed that the choices were entirely personal, and could be friends or family, famous or obscure, gay or straight, most of the faces on the walls are both well known and gay.

Billie Jean King chose her partner Ilana Kloss and many members of her own family; actor and presenter Sandi Toksvig's choices included the human rights campaigner and serial arrestee Peter Tatchell; Lord Smith was slightly disconcerted to realise that three of his choices, Woolf, the code-breaking mathematician Alan Turing, and the psychiatrist and mountaineer John Menlove Edwards, all killed thesmselves.

Most of the choices were so remorselessly highbrow ‑ Hollinghurst chose Tchaikovsky and the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, McKellen picked the American poet Walt Whitman and the late 19th century social reformer Edward Carpenter ‑ that Lord Waheed Alli felt slightly sheepish unveiling his selection, which as well as a flamboyant cowboy, fireman motorbike cop, Native American chief and builder, aka the Village People, included Princess Diana, Will Young, and Lily Savage. He also included the porn star Jeff Stryker, photographed sprawled in a tangle of white sheets. "I wanted a porn star because for me you could not divorce sex from sexualilty," he said.

Even in such company, Sir Elton John's selection was strikingly eclectic. He included the ragtime star Winifred Atwell, John Lennon, his own songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, Gianni Versace, and the cellist, conductor and human rights campaigner, Mstislav Rostropovich. And of course, Graham Taylor.

Taylor was informed of the honour by the gallery, and invited to the starry first night party, but has neither commented nor sneaked in for a look at the show which opens to the public today.

However, John volunteered an explanation of how Taylor made the grade, and the exhibition organisers hope he may be quietly chuffed at the honour.

"Graham Taylor was a good footballer but a truly great manager, famed for his love of the 'long ball' style game, getting the ball fast and direct to the forwards. In 1977, Graham came on board to manage my then newly-purchased football club, Watford. He even turned down a job offer from West Bromwich Albion (then in the First Division) to manage Watford, a club in the Fourth Division.

"I had been a lifelong Watford fan and Graham truly made whatever dreams I had for my team come true. In only five seasons, Graham took Watford from the Fourth Division to the First, and of course to the FA Cup final in 1984. After going on to manage the England team, he came back to Watford in 1996 and again the team's fortunes went up ‑ this time to the Premier League."

Author Asks: If Every Man Could Have Gay Sex, Why Would He Need Women? said...

Beliefnet writer David Klinghoffer has a theory why women should fight societal acceptance of homosexuality: in a world where men can have sex with men without attendant opprobrium, they won't want anything but. In other words: all men are gay.

Klinghoffer joins the grand new tradition of social conservatives from bestiality-lover Rick Santorum to sister-schtupper Glenn Beck who view social acceptance of same-sex couples through the narrow prism of their own fantasies. At least Klinghoffer's don't involve the family pet!

Klinghoffer does, however, come in the company of another man, Joshua Berman, a professor who argues that without societal strictures condemning male-on-male anal sex, men would undoubtedly prefer it to heterosexual vaginal copulation. His evidence for this is the widespread acceptance of male homosexuality in ancient Rome.

It turns out that where homoeroticism is granted full social sanction, as it was in Rome, it flourishes — so much so, that one writer noted that the emperor Claudius exhibited an unusual trait: he was sexually interested in women alone! Men, we learn from ancient Rome, will enjoy sex with other men, if there is no social censure.

Well, as Melissa McEwan of Shakesville points out, homoeroticism in ancient Rome was, more or less, limited to the upper classes and involved some pretty strict hierarchical rules: older men topped, younger, lower-status men bottomed. This is rather a far cry from fully consensual homosexuality, and was far more concerned with the sexual pleasure of who was on top.

Berman, with Klinghoffer right behind him, uses (and abuses) the state of male homosexual affairs to determine that male-on-male anal sex is so good that otherwise-heterosexual men would forgo vaginal intercourse all together if they could. Projection, anyone? His evidence, of course, is specious at best: a satirical play in which (one assumes) a woman offers her husband anal sex to stop having it with his boyfriend, and the man's refusal. From one ancient play, Berman and Klinghoffer extrapolate this:

The winners — big time — are homosexual men, because the historical record shows that they can expect their potential pool of partners to expand exponentially. Of note here is that this expanded pool of partners accrues to gay men, but not to homosexual women. At the risk of getting too explicit, I leave it the reader's basic grasp of anatomy to figure out why in ancient Rome a man who found pleasure in a woman, could also find pleasure in a man, while the record shows that a heterosexual woman rarely found sexual satisfaction in the company of another woman.

Author Asks: If Every Man Could Have Gay Sex, Why Would He Need Women? said...

Basically, male-on-male anal sex is good for the top — and, again, the bottom is left out of the equation — and "the record" (not, obviously, including Greek poet Sappho) reflects that women can't get a good pounding from another woman, so lesbian sex is obviously inferior to penetrative vaginal intercourse.

Berman and Klinghoffer — as one assumes they often do offline — ignore the facts, namely, that many, many women get intense pleasure from cunnilingus and manual or gadget-driven stimulation of their genitalia; that some women — even heterosexual ones — actually don't achieve orgasm any other way; that women have also been known to enjoy anal sex; that some men achieve orgasm through anal penetration; and that not every guy who gets off from anal penetration is homosexual (see: pegging). Then there is this:

The losers from all this will be the vast majority of women. With full social sanction given to homoerotic activity, the historical precedent suggests that tomorrow's women will have a harder time finding and holding on to suitable men. As women will suffer, so will the vitality and stability of the nuclear family.

Klinghoffer, shaken to his core by Berman's revelation, doesn't understand how anyone could take that the wrong way. Or disagree! And he is so not pleased that people are being mean to him - on a blog - so he follows up his post about the joys of anal sex with one that, in effect, accuses gay men of being huge sluts and defines monogamy as "feminine."

Men are unruly in their passions, far more so than women with their natural affinity for monogamy. This is not a stereotype. It's reality. I suspect that women in the lesbian community would confirm that it is so. Normally, men's unruliness is somewhat limited by women. In gay culture, that's not the case at all. An important break on male sexuality has been removed.

Wait, so, even though men would be so entranced how awesome it is to stick your dick in another man's asshole that we need to prevent the social acceptance of homosexuality, access to pussy is now the reason men don't stick their dicks in other men's assholes more often? And here I thought if we just got the man a little bathroom sex, he'd leave us ladies alone.

Joshua Berman, a professor who argues that without societal strictures condemning male-on-male anal sex, men would undoubtedly prefer it to heterosexual vaginal copulation

What an interesting theory!

Blind Items Revealed:

While shooting on the set of their latest movie, these two stars have a completely different way of interacting with their fans. Well, I should say one interacts with fans, and one pretends she cannot see or hear them. Our B+ list movie actor usually plays the fun guy and it seems that when he is filming it is the exact same way. He spends most of the time in between takes speaking with fans, taking pictures and talking the entire time. Our A+ list actress on the other hand spends her time in between takes as far away from the fans as possible and has absolutely nothing to do with them. She is very good at pretending not to hear them or see them.

Some fans were convinced to the very end that Clay Aiken was straight. I guess some people just have no gaydar. Hence some think Jake is not gay.

in a world where men can have sex with men without attendant opprobrium, they won't want anything but. In other words: all men are gay.

That doesn't mean all men are gay, just that a lot of not gay men would enjoy gay sex in that case :)

Anyone with any gaydar at all would peg Jake as gay in a NY minute.

Those were Clay's babblers, "good" fans who believe their idol, no matter what! lol

Brothers Peek-Out

Jim Sheridan's long-delayed Brothers, initially regarded as a 12.4.08 release before being bumped into '09, finally has a trailer up and running. Once upon a time the expectations for this domestic drama were very high, at least for the Sheridan fans among us. I couldn't wait to see it, but the stalls and duck-outs have persuaded most of us that something must be wrong.

As noted several times before on HE, Brothers is a remake of Susanne Bier's 2004 Danish-language original about a younger "bad" brother (Jake Gyllenhaal in Sheridan's version) stepping into the familial shoes of his older "good" brother (Tobwet Maguire) after the latter disappears during an enemy skirmish in Afghanistan.

Natalie Portman plays the wife-mother whose loyalties shift, or at least adapt to new realities. Sam Shepard plays the gruff and disapproving pater familias, the father of Gyllenhaal and Maguire. David Benioff (The Kite Runner, The 25th Hour) adapted the screenplay.

Daniel Radcliffe celebrates Harry Potter graduation by becoming art collector

Daniel Radcliffe has become a contemporary art collector, despite the best efforts of a New York dealer who wanted a more high-profile client than the world's most famous teenager.

The dealer must not have watched Radcliffe grow up year by year on camera.

The fifth film adaptation of J K Rowling's multimillion-selling books, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, opens in 12 days' time, meaning that Radcliffe, who auditioned for the first when he was 11 and is now nearly 20, has been living with the boy wizard for almost half his life. There are still two more films to go, with the final doorstep volume split into two parts.

In an interview with the Guardian Weekend magazine, Radcliffe admits he has become a rather serious young man who keeps a chart of famous authors in history on his dressing room wall and compares the Harry Potter films with those by the French director Francois Truffaut that also follow one character from 11 to 20.

Radcliffe considered celebrating his legal majority when he turned 18 in July 2007 by buying a sensible car like a Toyota Prius or a Golf GTI. Instead he decided to invest in art, falling for a blue ink drawing on white paper, called Mona D, Mary and Me, by the New York-based conceptual artist Jim Hodges.

"The dealer said they wanted to sell it to a more prestigious collector and Jim got word of this," Radcliffe said. "Turns out he's a massive Harry Potter fan and insisted they sell it to me.

"Ever since then I've been really good friends with Jim and his best mate, Tim, a photographer. And they are two gay guys, artists, in New York, and they introduced me to these amazing, crazy, mad, weird, extraordinary people. I was immediately embraced by the New York tranny community."

He offers a useful tip for any other actor hounded by paparazzi and fans.

"If you want to go out on the street without being recognised, without even being looked at, go out with a 6ft 8in beautiful transsexual," Radcliffe said. "No one gives you a second glance."

Is this picture of Austin recent? Is there any indication what time of day this is and if he is alone?

The picture is recent (my guess would be June). Austin was with two surfing girls and someone who took pictures:

Looks like afternoon. What do you mean by alone?

He isn't alone, he is with those 2 girls, look at the pictures again.

The pics say OTH/Wilmington but it's obvious these weren't taken on set, the surfing pics are probably taken where Austin lives when filming there and even the pic with Sophia looks like it was taken in a club.
