Dear Ted:
We get it, Jen Garner sucks. Onto more important things... Toothy Tile! Could you please run down the "And it's not..." list for me. After all this time, I am getting hazy on the Un-Toothy Tiles. My guess for T2... Matthew Broderick.
—Jen, Iowa

Dear Too Much Toothy:
Toothy's much sneakier than lame-ass Broderick. As for the list, check out the Internet. I do believe someone out there's been keeping track.

Dear Ted:
Is Toothy Tile Viggo Mortensen? You mentioned Lord of the Rings in one of your responses about a Toothy Tile guess.
—Cheryl

Dear Connection Failed:
Not the Lord of the Homo we're looking for dear, sorry. Think younger, less real-life brawny.

Dear Ted:
Love the new format—Monday mornings not so much, the yellow hurts my eyes. Toothy Tile has to be Matthew McConaughey. He has that "trying too hard" macho vibe. And the baby mama was a pragmatic career move.
—Groutless in Toronto

Dear Macho, Macho Matt:
Matt's more Hickville than Gayville, sorry. But at least he's not Toothy, I'll say that much.

Dear Ted:
Kindly please replace your word of retard to peabrain or D.D. (Delbert Dumbutt) or something that is decidedly less targeted to a group of people who already got the shaft in life; the mentally retarded. I love you, baby! I'm just defensive about the term since my son is high-functioning autistic. Now get a move on with some serious gossip. BTW, is Hillary Clinton Toothy Tile? Thought I'd have some fun today!
—Mckinn

Dear PC:
Noted, but don't go too Tropic Thunder on my ass and take it with a little bit of humor (I get your point, though), just as I am with your BV guess. It's good for the chuckles, but Hil ain't your man.

Dear Ted:
Does Toothy Tile know he's Toothy Tile in your Blind Vices? I've always heard that people in celebrity camps scroll blog sites (just to make sure they're getting talked about, of course). Just wondering if his people have figured out you're talking about him.
—Brg4Eyes

Dear Eavesdrop:
Toothy knows, alright. That's why he loves to do his out-me mamba all across T-town.

Dear Ted:
You mention that Colin Farrell has been in a "family twister" Blind Vice and that Toothy Tile is "less brawny in real life." You also have said that there is a Baby Tile, and Colin has a kid, does he not? Is he Toothy?
—AJ in Columbus

Dear Jigsaw Jumbler:
It sounds good on paper. But in reality, C.F. is as hetero and horny as they come.

Dear Ted:
Are the And It Ain't choices (1) always (2) sometimes or (3) never themselves the subjects of other Blind Vices?
—Barb

Dear Multiple Fess:
There is a golden ding showering you behind Door No. 2, darling!

Dear Ted:
As much as I wish Toothy Tile was in actuality Sarah Palin's husband, I have convinced myself it is Hugh Jackman. Yay or Nay?
—Katy

Dear Wishful Thinking:
Nay. Almost, but not quite.

Dear Ted:
Are Clay Aiken and his baby son Toothy's boyfriend Gray Goose and Baby Tile?
—Jane

Dear Too Obvious:
Toothy's lover isn't coming out anytime soon.

Dear Ted:
Now that Sophia Bush is single and working on One Tree Hill with three of her ex-boyfriends, Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty and Austin Nichols, do you think she will start dating one of them again? I hope she goes for Austin. I liked them together.
—Paula

Dear Ex Factor:
CMM is out, fer sure. He can maybe hope for some hate sex, but that's it. I think Bush should even the scoreboard and go for Benji Madden. Thoughts?

Dear Ted:
Could you tell us more about Toothy's boyfriend? He is half of the most intriguing and beautiful Hollywood gay closeted couple and the other daddy of Baby Tile. Don't you think he deserves more attention from you?
—April

Dear Man Hunt:
No, but his abs surely do.

Dear Ted:
I called in sick today and said I was deficient in my Vitamin T—OK, that was cheesy, but I think I deserve for this question to be printed since I risked my livelihood over it! Have you and Mr. Tile ever done the nasty (prehubby, of course!)? I reread some entries and you two sure seemed a little flirty a couple of years ago. And, who is hotter, Toothy or his BF? Is Mario Lopez his lover?
—Thrasher

Dear Bedroom Boinked:
In order: No. Yes. Neither, I like men, not little beautiful boys who still retain a tad of privileged baby fat. No.

Dear Ted:
Recently you said 1 in 10 people in Hollywood were straight. You must be including behind-the-scenes creative folks, agents, producers, etc. In terms of actors/actresses, what is the percentage that is straight?
—Cupcake in Cincinnati

Dear Left Brain:
One in 25. Make that 100.

Dear Ted:
OK, so Clay is gay. Big whoop...file that reveal under No Merde. Quick question, though…Has Clay ever been a subject of one of your Blind Vices? If yes, which one? And yes, I know he's not Toothy Tile.
—Jen

Dear Aching for Aiken:
Clay is far too dull for our sexy Vice archives.

Dear Ted:
The mags have been pushing the Reese-Jake romance for over a year now, but neither will confirm or deny the rumors. What’s the big secret?
—Mallory, Conn.

Dear Cladestine Couple:
Those two are just friends with benefits. The benefits, of course, meaning publicity.

Toothy Tile is Mario Lopez because of his toothy grin, dimples, fab shape, perfect abs, consistent seemingly gal-chasing ways, and hanging out with BFF so often but that easily jealous husband of BFF is never jealous of Mario. That's the biggest giveaway. Right, Ted?

"Connecticut Supreme Court rules for same-sex marriage"

Glad to hear that. Thanks for the good news. I wonder what impact that could have on California...

Anonymous said...

No on 8

Oct 6, 2008

"The poll conducted for CBS 5 by SurveyUSA indicates that support for the measure to ban gay marriage has grown among voters in the state over an eleven day period — most especially among young voters.

According to the poll, likely California voters overall now favor passage of Proposition 8 by a five-point margin, 47 percent to 42 percent. Ironically, a CBS 5 poll eleven days prior found a five-point margin in favor of the measure's opponents.

The only demographic group to significantly change their views during this period were younger voters — considered the hardest to poll and the most unpredictable voters — who now support the measure after previously opposing it."

Maggie Gyllenhaal Says She Couldn't Sleep With A McCain Voter

During hot topics on The View today, the ladies wondered aloud how to handle being seriously involved with someone with opposing political views. They asked Maggie Gyllenhaal, who was on the show to hock SoyJoy branded organic clothing (seriously), if she could date someone of a different political stripe. Maggie said that she and main man Peter Sarsgaard are both Democrats, and that Ronald Reagan was basically a dirty word in her parents' household when she was a kid. Finally, Maggie said she probably couldn't sleep with someone who was voting for McCain.

Then there was a brief silence and Elisabeth muttered, "We could probably slumber even though I'm voting for McCain." Awkward!!! Clip above.

Jake Survives On-Set Injury

Acting can be dangerous to your health — just ask Jake Gyllenhaal! While waiting to shoot a scene for his latest movie, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Reese Witherspoon's boyfriend nearly lost an eye!

"He was throwing this prop key up higher and higher," says an insider. "But on the eighth toss, he didn't catch it and the key slashed his face, an inch under his left eye. Everyone held their breath because he couldn't see for a few moments because of the blood."

An on-set nurse stopped the bleeding, bandaged Jake up and wanted to take him to a nearby London hospital. He declined but must have been more shaken up than he appeared because "he called in sick the next day," adds the insider.

"When he did return to work, the makeup department had a tough time covering it up."

Does Zac Have Naked Ambition?

A lot of kids go a little crazy after graduation, so maybe that's what's happening to High School Musical 3 hunk Zac Efron, who is reportedly considering following in Harry Potter's nekkid footprints on Broadway in Equus.

Or so says U.K. tabloid The Sun, which quotes the elfin Efron on the possible next steps in his career, "You know that Daniel Radcliffe role on Broadway, well it's been mentioned."

That's the kind of thing that could make folks at Disney dizzy, but thankfully the tween heartthrob is also slated for a remake of Footloose.

Which probably sounds waaay better to the suits than some of the other appendages that could get loose.

Bitch-Back! Toothy, Toothy, Toothy

Dear Ted:
Would you answer the million-dollar question: Is Toothy Tile gay or bisexual? How about Gray Goose? What is the real nature of Toothy's relationship with his beard?
—Mia

Dear Tricky Tooth:
You mean the one on his face or the one on his publicist’s speed dial? Gay as my vocabulary, darling. Ditto on the real love in Toothy’s life.

Dear Ted:
I have so many questions for you! Is Daniel Craig Toothy Tile? Is Obama going to win? Will Brad Pitt pull a Woody Allen and marry Zahara 18 years from now?

Dear Lot to Handle:
No. Hopefully. Better not.

Happy National Coming Out Day!

National Coming Out Day is an internationally-observed civil awareness day for coming out and discussion about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. It is observed on October 11 every year in the United States by members of the LGBT communities and their supporters (often referred to as "allies").

The day was founded by Dr. Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary in 1988, in celebration of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights one year earlier, in which 500,000 people marched on Washington, DC, United States, for gay and lesbian equality. National Coming Out Day events are aimed at raising awareness of the LGBT community among the general populace in an effort to give a familiar face to the LGBT rights movement.

JOHNNY DEPP HEADS LUST LIST

MOVIE hunk Johnny Depp has been named the sexiest man in the world as girls go ga-ga for older fellas.

He beat fellow fortysomethings George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig to the top spot. In fact, only three men in their 20s make the Top 25 – Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal, British actor James McAvoy and singer Justin Timberlake. All are beaten to the No1 position by Pirates Of The Caribbean swashbuckler Depp. Clooney takes second spot, followed by youngster Jake.

Bond heart-throb Daniel is rated fourth, no doubt thanks to his skintight trunks in Casino Royale, with Pitt rounding off the top five.

The World’s Sexiest Men survey, compiled by Cosmopolitan magazine, features plenty of Brits alongside Craig and McAvoy. England ace David Beckham shows he still knows how to score by coming in ninth. And 13th place is a feast of talent – it is taken by the whole of Take That, who recently set pulses racing again with their comeback.

Doctor Who star David Tennant’s Sonic Screwdriver obviously does it for the girls. He is rated 16th. And women clearly prefer the crumpled looks of Gordon Ramsay to the lusty charms of TV and movie star Russell Brand. The fiery chef is in 21st place, while Brand is one spot below him.

Oldest man on the list is former 007 star Pierce Brosnan, proving fellas can still look fab in their 50s. Lizzi Hosking of Cosmopolitan said: “Both George Clooney and Johnny Depp just keep getting better with age.”

The full results can be seen in the November issue of Cosmopolitan, on sale from Monday.

TOP 25 HUNKS
1 Johnny Depp, 45

Ben Kingsley Loves You And You

Sir Ben Kingsley took a break from filming 2010’s summer blockbuster Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to remind you that despite all the trauma and heartache you may have experienced this week, he still loves you. Kingsley said, “It doesn’t hurt to know that somebody loves you. Now, I’m not going to loan some money to pay off your credit card, but I love you and if you want to have a pint or tea, it’ll be my treat.”

Defamer has the first photo of Ben Kingsley as Nizam in costume on the set of Mike Newell’s big screen adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

In the film, Kingsley kills his brother, King Shahrman of Persia, and puts the blame of the murder on the King’s son, Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal). Nizam claims the throne and seeks the mysterious Sands of Time in his efforts to take over the world. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters on May 28th 2010.

That's not always true - every person is different, some men are terrible with spacial relationships, and some women are better at it. Those outmoded generalizations have been proven wrong. Women like to look too; they have been, in the past, had their sexuality repressed.

Yes, there are, absolutely! My point is this:

Men want hot women, study confirms

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Science is confirming what most women know: When given the choice for a mate, men go for good looks.

And guys won't be surprised to learn that women are much choosier about partners than they are.

"Just because people say they're looking for a particular set of characteristics in a mate, someone like themselves, doesn't mean that is what they'll end up choosing," Peter M. Todd, of the cognitive science program at Indiana University, Bloomington, said in a telephone interview.

Researchers led by Todd report in Tuesday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that their study found humans were similar to most other mammals, "following Darwin's principle of choosy females and competitive males, even if humans say something different."

Men's choices did not reflect their stated preferences, the researchers concluded. Instead, men appeared to base their decisions mostly on the women's physical attractiveness.

They were proven right, we are talking about average:

Subtle but Intriguing Differences Found In the Brain Anatomy of Men and Women

RESEARCHERS who study the brain have discovered that it differs anatomically in men and women in ways that may underlie differences in mental abilities.

The findings, although based on small-scale studies and still very preliminary, are potentially of great significance. If there are subtle differences in anatomical structure between men's and women's brains, it would help explain why women recover more quickly and more often from certain kinds of brain damage than do men, and perhaps help guide treatment.

The findings could also aid scientists in understanding why more boys than girls have problems like dyslexia, and why women on average have superior verbal abilities to men. Researchers have not yet found anything to explain the tendency of men to do better on tasks involving spatial relationships.

^^And you need to develop a sense of humor along with spatial relationships. People were being sarcastic, we know these silly studies that crop up every now and then are the same old bunk. You see people who defy these "rules" all the time, men who are great writers and speakers, women who are mathematicians and rocket scientists.

Women have come a long way, and don't need others to speak for them anymore, they can take care of themselves, and should, and are intelligent enough to vote for the right person election day.

Math Skills Suffer in U.S., Study Finds, discouraging girls to become scientists

Anonymous said...

I'm superstitious.

Anonymous said...

"The United States is failing to develop the math skills of both girls and boys, especially among those who could excel at the highest levels, a new study asserts, and girls who do succeed in the field are almost all immigrants or the daughters of immigrants from countries where mathematics is more highly valued.

The study suggests that while many girls have exceptional talent in math — the talent to become top math researchers, scientists and engineers — they are rarely identified in the United States.

A major reason, according to the study, is that American culture does not highly value talent in math, and so discourages girls — and boys, for that matter — from excelling in the field. The study will be published Friday in Notices of the American Mathematical Society."

Yo, the stupid US culture.
Prepare to be defeated.

Who are the fucking Republican creeps posting on this board? Your party HATES gay people. That you would post McCain/Palin props here and dismiss an honorable man like Barack Obama disgusts me. I am both a Hillary fan and an Obama fan, and the rethuglican party wants gay people like myself silent or dead. I hope the moderator deletes your shit - it's a homophobic slap in the face to read your fascist-party talking points on a gay-friendly blog.

Yeah, that makes sense. They know their party and its far-right, gay-hating tactics are going to be a thing of the past, thank GOD.

Yes, it's average, but they sometimes get taken as absolutes, which is what is dangerous about them. My language and verbal abilities are pretty good naturally, but math I had to work at, loved science (but you need math) and spatial relationships, like map reading and parallel parking, have improved. :)

"common knowledge" has notning to do with what is true. Three quarters of Americans believe that the Bible is the literal word of God.

You're making pretty ridiculous claims, you should be embarrassed.

I'm not embarrassed because things like gender and spatial perception are common knowledge.
What religion has to do with common knowledge?

There are gay Republicans. There are out gay Republicans. But there are no out, gay and proud Republicans because they are self-hating and are members of a party that despises them as gay people. They are like "feminists" who support the rape-kit-denying, I force 12-year-olds-to-have-abortions-even- in-the-case-of-rape-or-incest Sarah Palin or Jewish Nazis (or even gay Nazis, since 50,000 gay people were slaughtered under the Nazi regime as well).

That's the kind of thing that could make folks at Disney dizzy, but thankfully the tween heartthrob is also slated for a remake of Footloose. Which probably sounds waaay better to the suits than some of the other appendages that could get loose.

Zac Efron (And His Peen) In Equus?

I like where Broadway is going. I applaud celebrity dudes getting on stage and showing their wangs to a live audience. This is what theater needs. However, Zac Efron's peen is not the dick I had in mind to replace DanRad's wang in "Equus" on Broadway.

Zac tells The Sun that he's ready to shed his goody-goody Disney image by exposing his skin lipstick on the Great White Way. Zac says, "You know that Daniel Radcliffe role on Broadway, well it's been mentioned.”

I know some of you whores are producing massive amounts of panty pudding over this bit of news, but think it through. There's no way Zac is going to show off his man clit in its natural state. This is the Cover Girl princess we're talking about. The peen is going to be covered in powder, foundation, bronzer, mascara, lipstick, false eyelashes and glitter. It's not going to look like a beautiful penis. It's going to look like fucking Xtina.

The Year's Most Valuable Celebrity Faces

If America is falling into the recession economists fear it is, Angelina Jolie may prove more important than ever.

To the country's celebrity magazine editors, that is. Shrinking wallets could mean shrinking readership, and nobody moves magazines like Jolie, according to Forbes.com's second annual analysis of the top-selling celebrity faces.

"The idea of spending $3.99 on a magazine when you don't know what your economic future is is very, very difficult," says Star magazine Editor-in-Chief Candace Trunzo. "It makes it that much more important for us to present a cover that is so appealing that they can't help but buy it."

For the newsstand-dependent celebrity weeklies, compelling covers are absolutely crucial, making editors' choices of cover stars more important than ever. How these magazines fare in the face of economic hardship remains to be seen, since none of them, with the exception of People, were around in their current forms during the last big downturn in the early 1990s.

So expect to see a lot more of Jolie. We analyzed the newsstand sales for the six biggest celebrity weeklies-- People, Star, US Weekly, In Touch Weekly, Life & Style and OK!--over a year-long period ending June 30, eliminating non-celebrity and "collage" covers as well as one-off cover subjects and special issues with exceptionally large rate bases.

We then counted how many more--or fewer--issues the celebrity's cover sold as compared to the magazine's average newsstand sales per issue. We also factored in the number of full covers a celebrity individually graced as well as his or her appeal, a measure provided by Los Angeles-based market research firm E-Poll Market Research. Stars were left off the list in rare cases when "likability" data wasn't available.

Jolie earned the top spot, thanks to strong performances in all three categories. Whether it's her humanitarian efforts or her ever-expanding brood, the globe-trotting A-lister has little trouble garnering interest at the checkout line.

Jennifer Aniston also proved highly appealing, this time landing second on our list (she was No. 1 last year). Thanks to her ever-tumultuous love life, the former Friends star appeared on eight covers all by herself, and many of them flew off shelves.

Rounding out the top three is Heath Ledger, whose life was cut tragically short earlier this year. In his case, it was his mysterious and all-too-early death that made him front-cover news--something he hadn't been prior to his passing. Traditionally, male covers sell far fewer copies than female ones with the typically female reader base (both Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey failed to make the top 10, though another tragic cover subject, Owen Wilson, did). But the idea of a talent like Ledger dying so young left readers grasping for clues--and buying magazines in search of them.

Sound frivolous? It may seem so, but it's also big business, with the six weeklies accounting for hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue for the magazine industry. Taken together, newsstand sales account for 53% of the 9.4 million copies sold weekly by the sextet. Of them, only People counts on subscriptions for more than half its weekly sales. For two of the titles-- Life & Style Weekly and In Touch--newsstand accounts for more than 95% of sales, making them particularly vulnerable to bad cover choices.

"You have basically five seconds, maybe less, to grab a reader at the newsstand," says In Touch Editor Michelle Lee. "So they either have to love that star or they have to be fascinated by their story that week."

If it were just about frequency, Britney Spears would have topped our list. In fact, she landed more than 30 covers this year, but proved a bust with readers, ranking dead last in both our likability and cover sales categories.

People Managing Editor Larry Hackett says Spears is a case of editors going to the well too often without much new to say. "The way people are covered these days, even if you were Cleopatra, people would get tired of you," he says. "You just can't be covered 24/7 and remain that interesting."

Still, Spears no longer ranks last in our rankings--a dubious title she earned last year. Instead, Hollywood's top-earning tween Miley Cyrus loses this time around, scoring poorly in all three categories. While there's no doubt she's powerful and popular, it seems the Hannah Montana star's appeal isn't broad enough for the celebrity weekly set. "Here is a teenager who's quickly becoming a multi-millionaire, if not a billionaire," says Lee. "It's pretty hard to relate to that."

In Pictures: The Year's 10 Most Valuable Celebrity Faces

10. Owen Wilson
Like Ledger, Wilson covers--focused on his reported suicide attempt--benefited from their tragic news angle. Similarly working in his favor: fan adoration. The comedic actor placed third in likability.

9. Heidi Montag
The Hills vixen may be lacking fans--the only cover subject less likable than Montag is Britney Spears--but she can push magazines. Her four solo covers landed her at No. 6 in the cover sales category.

8. Shiloh Jolie Pitt
Though Shiloh has her kiddie rival Suri beat when it comes to likability, Brangelina's biological offspring was outranked in both her number of covers and cover sales.

7. Suri Cruise
The adorable tot may not have much to say, but she's a master at selling magazines. At just 2-and-a-half years old, Cruise has snagged adoring fans and interested readers. In fact, she outperforms even her parents, A-listers Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, on the newsstand.

6. Jessica Simpson
While she's hardly the fan favorite Jennifer Aniston is--in fact, the pop-star-turned-country-crooner ranks 14th in the likability category--Simpson ranked fourth in cover sales, thanks to the her tumultuous relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo

5. Nicole Richie
The pint-sized party-girl-turned-protective-mom has proved her prowess at the newsstand. Richie lands third in the cover sales category, behind Jamie Lynn Spears and Angelina Jolie. But much like the younger Spears sister, her low likability score drags her down.

4. Jamie Lynn Spears
Though she was hardly a tabloid staple before announcing her pregnancy, a then 16-year-old Spears captivated the nation with her news. Her five covers landed her first in the cover sales category. Unfortunately, the Nickelodeon star lagged in the likability category, where she placed an unimpressive 16th.

3. Heath Ledger
It was Ledger's mysterious and all-too-early death that made him front-cover news--something he hadn't been prior to his passing. And while male cover subjects traditionally sell fewer copies than female ones, due to their lack of relatability for the heavily female reader base (other cover subjects Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey didn't make the cut), the idea of a talent like Ledger dying so young left readers grasping for answers--and buying magazines in search of them.

2. Jennifer Aniston
Aniston has once again proved highly appealing, this time landing second on our list (she topped it last year). In fact, with the exception of Heath Ledger, whose life was cut tragically short earlier this year, Aniston is the most-liked cover model of the year. And thanks to her ever-tumultuous love life, the former Friends star had eight covers all to herself during the year period.

1. Angelina Jolie
Be it her humanitarian efforts or her ever-expanding brood, Jolie has little trouble garnering interest--and, for that matter, landing covers. In fact, she graced nearly 30 in the past year, ranking second behind Britney Spears in the cover category. She also places second in cover sales, this time behind another Spears: Britney's teenage sister, new mother Jamie Lynn.

I don't think Heath's too happy to be on the list, wherever he is now.

Coming Out Day: A Gallery of the Out and Proud...

This is by no means a complete gallery of famous out performers and athletes, just many of the ones featured in Out in Hollywood. From Billie Jean to Billy Bean, Neil Patrick Harris to Sam Harris, and Lance to Louganis, they are heroes to me who have had the courage to be out and proud in the public arena and are inspirations to us all.

National Coming Out Day
5 characters who could have used the support

The colors are changing, the air is more crisp, and the hinges on closet doors everywhere are getting ready to burst wide open. Yes, National Coming Out Day is here (October 11), that special time when gays all over the globe grab their literal or figurative cojones and declare their queerness to whoever cares to listen. While many are lucky enough to have their coming out met with a shrug or a hug, some have a harder time, and still others are compelled to continue a life in the closet.
...
Brokeback Mountain

Yeah, I said it. Our favorite poster-boys for smoldering glances and forbidden, tragic love are included on this list in all their closeted glory because they denied themselves true happiness by staying in the closet for so long. Of course wives and girlfriends and society’s rigid constraints were thrown into the mix, but if all these things weren’t getting in the way of these two being with one another, I fail to understand why these two never made the next move. Besides, perhaps Alma and Lureen could’ve comforted each other and given our friends at AfterEllen a little something to smile about.

In those days, surely a simple note would’ve sufficed and left our heroes free to ride out into that house in the woods Jack talked so much about. There could have been a future for these two, and while Annie Proulx doesn’t like the mere thought of it, that future lives on (and on and on) in the Brokeback slash fiction that litters the net. While we all know the fates of Ennis and Jack (a lifetime of crushing loneliness and a life ended by a crushed skull, to be exact), perhaps these are the two characters out of all the characters who didn’t come out soon enough whose fates can be rewritten by you, me, and anyone else with a basic level of literacy. Go on, have at it ... but if Annie comes a-knockin’, you didn’t hear it from me.
...
Celebrate Coming Out Day by being there for a friend who’s at that stage, appreciating your life as an out and proud gay man, or, if still closeted, by gathering enough courage and support to take a step (however small) yourself. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that doing so may save you from a life of identity-theft, murder, tragic love, or a really, really bad kiss with your casually homophobic boss.

Hollywood stars still struggle with coming out
Days of Rock Hudson-style facades over, but discrimination still an issue

Even though, as Simon Cowell pointed out, discovering that Clay Aiken is gay is like “being told Santa Claus isn’t real,” apparently there are a few adults out there who still sit home on Christmas Eve hoping that St. Nick can navigate his way in foul weather. Message boards devoted to the former “American Idol” runner-up included comments like, “This is really shocking news, as I had no idea he was gay” and “I feel numb I’m so upset; this can’t be real!”

Some among Aiken's ardent fans, the so-called Claymates, had a visceral reaction to the singer's announcement last week that he was gay, expressing dismay and questioning whether they can continue to support him. But most took the news with a blink and a shrug, and that seems to be true for the general public as well.

When gays and lesbians in the entertainment industry come out these days, they’d probably be advised to throw lavish coming-out parties to ensure that attention will be paid. In the year 2008, when tolerance levels appear to be at an all-time high — not ideal by any means, and with lots of room for improvement — such an announcement is often quickly consumed by the 24-hour news cycle, and digested by a more enlightened populace.

When asked if he had heard the news about Aiken’s announcement, Bryan Batt replied, “What news?” An openly gay actor who plays the closeted gay character Salvatore Romano on the Emmy-winning “Mad Men,” Batt was indicating that he doesn’t believe in Santa, either.

“In this country,” he said, “too many people worry about other people’s private lives.” Batt said that being out and gay has not affected his career. “Not that I know of,” he said. “I was never really very closeted as a professional actor. It’s such a non-issue with me, my sexuality. “When I think about other people, it’s not one of the top things I ask. It’s more important what you do, not who you do.”

Coming out less jarring than in the past
Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), said because there is a more understanding climate when it comes to such declarations, the news is much less jarring that it had been in the past. “Certainly society is more accepting of lesbians and gays, and we’re more visible than we’ve ever been,” he said. “Everybody knows somebody who is lesbian and gay. “I would have to add that the whole issue of exposing one’s sexual orientation is a personal one. I don’t think outside factors matter as much as an individual’s personal journey.”

When Aiken came out, he unintentionally directed a spotlight on the issue of career. Will fans abandon him in droves? Will he be less of an attraction as a performer because of his sexual orientation? In decades past, great efforts were made to cover up a celebrity’s homosexuality in order to preserve his or her popularity among the heterosexual mainstream. Now? Career concerns don’t seem nearly as deep as they once were. The days of Rock Hudson marrying his agent’s secretary for appearances’ sake seem to be over.

“I do think it’s a lot more acceptable now,” explained Bonnie Zane, an Emmy-nominated casting director who works mostly in television. “In Hollywood, announcements like that are rarely a surprise. There wasn’t one person here who didn’t know Clay Aiken was gay. “Do I think it affects their careers? When Neil Patrick Harris (one of the stars of “How I Met Your Mother”) came out, it didn’t affect him at all. No one stopped viewing the show because of it. Maybe a few people in Middle America, but I don’t think it affected the ratings at all.”

Some still not ready to come out
Not all gay actors feel as ready or as comfortable to reveal their sexual identities as Harris or Aiken. Zane mentioned one actor who had been outed by a Web site but who “went back into the closet” when he got a prominent role on a show that required him to play a macho role.

There is another show she is aware of, she said, that features an actor who will not talk about his children or his partner because “he doesn’t want to open that door.” And, she explained, if a studio or production company wanted to avoid hiring an actor simply because he or she was gay, “No one would come out and say it because everyone here is politically correct. There are other ways to put the kibosh on (hiring).”

In the entertainment business, there are gays and lesbians who are still in the closet. Then there are those who are out in certain Hollywood circles, but not out to the general public. “We talk with people who are still struggling with how out they want to be,” Giuliano said. “They might be out at private parties, but not at the workplace or with colleagues. It’s a very personal and unique situation with every individual.

“One’s upbringing and family relationships and where they are at in the world come into play. What happens with my career, my income, my relationships with colleagues? A lot of us who were in the closet and had a fear of others knowing came out and then realized that people assumed we were gay anyway and (the fear) was all in our own minds.”

He cautioned that, even though there have been advancements for gays and lesbians and the atmosphere generally is friendlier to those who choose to make their status public, “You can still be fired in 30 states if you’re openly gay. You can’t serve in the military. There is no federal hate-crime legislation. So when deciding to come out, it’s still a very big deal.” That’s true for some, not so much for others. “Again, to me, it’s a non-issue,” Batt said. “I’ve never tried to be anything other than what I am. If people have a problem with it, it’s their problem, thank you.”
