Feels So Good That It Can’t Be Wrong

Ricky Martin Ricky Martin, "Me" book signing, November 2010

There is something beautiful in witnessing a major celebrity in the throes of profound and real transformation. A week before we meet, Ricky Martin had made a surprise appearance at the annual Human Rights Campaign national dinner to pledge his support. “Something as simple as standing at that dinner and saying, ‘I’m gay,’ creates so may emotions I’ve never felt before,” he admits. “I didn’t do it earlier because of fear, and, bottom line, it was all in my head. I was seduced by fear, and I was sabotaging most of my life -- my music, my relationships with my friends, with my family, with everybody. That’s something I need to share because I know that a lot of people are going through what I went through, no matter what their age, and fear cannot control us.”

Ricky Martin is about to share big time -- with his new memoir, Me, a remarkably heartfelt account of his journey from teen group Menudo to fatherhood, delivered in a frank, conversational style that doesn’t economize on the truth. It includes accounts of his first passionate affairs -- with men and with women -- as well as his struggle to reconcile his conflicted yearnings with his rapid ascent in America. The pivotal year is 1999, at which Martin performed his World Cup anthem, “La Copa de la Vida,” at the Grammys. Largely unknown in the United States beyond Hispanic audiences, he left the stage as a breathless Rosie O’Donnell (the evening’s host) exclaimed, “Who was that cutie patootie?”

It was connecting the dots that led directly to Martin’s tweet last March. In his memoir, he recounts how friends and colleagues remonstrated with him to hold off: “I ignored all their recommendations, and by the end, when they came to me with the argument that I shouldn’t do it during Easter because it might offend my Christian fans, I said: ‘What part of ‘I can’t take it any more’ do you not understand? What about me?’”

Above all, he says he worried about Matteo and Valentino having to answer for their father’s untruths. How would they respond as they grew older? Would they have to lie on his behalf? “How could I teach my kids to lie?” he asks. “How could I teach them not to be themselves?” And, as simple as that, he realized he couldn’t and wouldn’t. “My children will grow up with no prejudice,” he says. “As parents, we need to create a new way of thinking for our kids, in which we accept, and we love, and we can vibe with everybody.”

Btw, Anne said that she and her boyfriend want to start a family in the near future.

The LAOD promo, the interviews, the interaction between Jake and Anne made me more certain Jake is gay. I like them together, they have cute chemistry.

Adam accompanied Anne to London too, if you take a close look you can see him in some of the London airport pics. He was also at the LAOD London screening. He and Anne are tight.

I just don't like Adam Shulman a lot since Ted reported that Adam supposedly beat up a fan to "protect" Anne. And he stole that portrait that he gave back later. Despite everthing, Anne still seems to love him, so. :)

I supposed if the fan were to hurt Anne, you would had blame Adam for doing nothing. Ted doesn't know what was said or done by the fan to Anne, and the fact that Adam had to hit the pretty says it wasn't a fan. Did the fan filed charges? It was probably a nut case stalking Anne.

In a separate skit, Hathaway did a send up of Katie Holmes.
Speaking in breathy tones and constantly tucking her hair behind her ear, the actress had the audience in stitches as she played Tom Cruise's wife.
She even managed to keep a straight face as she looked coyly up and down and cocked her mouth to one side while speaking.
...

Anne Hathaway reopens the Princess Diaries as she plays Kate Middleton in a VERY racy Saturday Night Live skit

Mr. Zwick speaks of the sex scenes in his new film as a kind of dramatic icebreaker: the ingredient necessary to “break down the wall” with which contemporary audiences guards their emotions.

I must say that I don't understand Mr Zwick - why did he turn LAOD into a silly romcom?

Gyllenhaal still loves returning to New York, if only for his regular black-and-white cookie fix. "I'm a connoisseur," he laughs. "And I love the one at Nussbaum & Wu — that's one of my favorite black-and-white cookies in the city."

"Jake knows all the best health food places, so I'm trying to use his knowledge," Hathaway adds. Raised in New Jersey, she was born in Brooklyn and she's still a proud New Yorker and fervent gay marriage advocate. Her mom is on the board of the Empire State Pride Agenda. "My first good memory of New York is revealing of me to be a bit of a spazz," she says. "I remember eating sand at the Dolphin Park in Carroll Gardens."

Seasoned stage actors, both would relish the chance to hit Broadway, especially in a musical (Gyllenhaal's pipes were good enough to get him down to the final three for the lead part in "Moulin Rouge" that eventually went to Ewan McGregor).

"I would do a musical on Broadway in an absolute heartbeat and I'm constantly looking for the opportunities to do it," Anne says. "I don't mean to slam musicals, but the problem is that, a lot of times, in the classic shows, the songs are heavenly but the book doesn't offer the acting challenge that you hope."

"You need to be able to do it more than 100 times," Jake adds.

LAOD said...

For now, though, they have more personal than professional projects to focus on: birthdays. Anne turned 28 on Nov. 12, a crucial time, according to Hathaway, who has said, "A lot of actresses start kicking ass between 27 and 30."

She's sweetly poetic when explaining what that really means. "There's a great line in ‘Alice in Wonderland' where the Hatter says to Alice, ‘You've lost your muchness'. And I feel like I am the age where I'm more able to easily identify what my muchness is and be more fierce about protecting it."

Jake turns 30 on Dec. 19, a milestone he's keen to honor. "I was talking to my sister the other day about being 30 and celebrating the life you've had up to this point," he says. "I feel there's a massive sort of sea change coming in myself and I'm psyched."

To commemorate the date, he's taking the family on a trip to the Arctic Circle to scuba-dive with walruses. "The only reason I'm doing it is I wanted to do something that absolutely terrified me — killer whales and walruses and freezing cold water? That seems absolutely terrifying."

But as long as he has Anne Hathaway to watch his back, whether stark naked on a set or in scuba gear in subzero temperatures, Gyllenhaal will likely be just fine.

...When Mr. Gyllenhaal was in town, trips to the supermarket would invariably inspire fellow shoppers to pull out their cell phones in the middle of the produce aisles and aim them in the same direction.

"I think we live in a world where people who are in the public eye have to know that what they do is going to be documented. There is definitely an ability for privacy, but most of the time, you just have to accept that that's what it is.

"And I think you have to be who you are and do what you love, and I think most of the time, people are pretty respectful and when they're not, they're not."

He says he loves his fans and making movies and the attention that comes with it.

When it's suggested that 99 percent of the population can run out for coffee or stop for gas without checking in the mirror, he says, "So can I. It just depends on what you believe. If you want everybody to see you looking a certain way, then if that makes your life happy, then that's great. That would make me miserable. If you're aware of it all the time, I think you're not living.

"People are going to make mistakes, they're going to have amazing times, hard times, just like everybody, and people might document that and say whatever they're going to say, but ultimately it's just life. You can take a picture of it or not, but you gotta live it."

I do think he's being honest that he loves the attention that comes with making movies. I think being famous and being a heartthrob is a big part of the allure of being an actor for him. I don't see him as one of those actors that just does it for the love of his craft. (Yeah, I think there are some actors like that.)

A certain columnist said this about a certain blind item.

Just saw Adam Lambert's biography on AE. That boy gets lots of attention from women of all ages.

I wish actors/actresses would just realize most fans don't care about their sexuality in reality. In the long run they are just a fantasy for fans, its that simple. I would not stop having fantasies about actor because he's gay, its a fantasy whether he's gay or not. Do you women stop having fantasies about Brad Pitt because he's with Angelie Jolie?

Does that make sense?

There is no reason for Jake to stay in L.A. except for business.

His family has always been based on the East coast, his father is from PA and he has family there and his Mother is from The LES/Brooklyn and he has family there.

Maggie, Peter, Ramona and his Mom are in Brooklyn, the only family Jake has left in L,A, is his Dad.

Mom, Sister, Brother in law, niece, aunts, uncles, cousins all on the East coast in the NY/PA area vs L.A. and crazy Pop.

Why would he want to stay there if he doesn't have to.

BTW, whrn OTH wasn't filming Jake was in NY and MV and Austin was hanging with Sophia in L.A., TX, MI and on occasion, NC,

Jake hanging on thr East Coast has nothong to do with the OTH filming

How naive are you. Jut because you dont see Toothy and Goose together does not mean they are not. Jake appears suddenly in a city all the time without being seen.

Jake was born and raised in LA and owned a home there, possibly still owns it. Both parents had roots in the east but most of their adult life and career has been spent in LA, not NY. Naomi did not move east until the divorce. Financial problems were the biggest reason.

Anonymous said...

Jake is in NY because he hates L.A. and feels more at home amongst his family which live Pennsylvania and New York.

Jake's parents are kaput in HW, Mom lives with Maggie and Co and crazy Pop is lucky to be getting gigs directing episodes of mediocore TV shows.

Jake is a grown man and IMO he has chosen to basically live in NY be cause L.A. sucks moose balls.

There was a blind not that long ago that said that Taylor and Jake were not dating just rehearsing for a possible movie pairing. After the negative reaction to them as a couple sounds like they were dropped from consideration.

They were never attached to NYE, Reese and Zac Efron were.

Someone with a IMDB account, removed Zac and Reese and replaced them with Jake and Reese, any "fan" can make changes, usually the IMDB mods catches it and fixes it.

The only reason why I think a "fan" did it was because Taylor was in VD, they should have just added Jake's name to Rock of Ages, at least there was talk about him or Zac doing that unlike NYE.

They were never dropped for concideration because they were never attached.

Next time a "fan" decides to pull shit like that they need to make sure that there is actual talk about it, and there wasn't. It sounds like they wanted it to fit something, cough.

Perhaps they chose NYE because Anne was in VD and they became confused, LOL!

That should be they changed it to Jake and Taylor not Jake and Reese.

Very sloppy and obvious. Again no chatter about either being attached to NYE like other rumored Jake projects.

So either some IMDB mod corected it or the "fan" was afraid their little prank would and could be traced back to them and they would have their account deleted so they fixed it themselves.

And it was a Jake "fan" that did it as they made the rounds of the Jake blogs informing everyone of it as soon as they made the change, LOL!

Too bad it wasn't up longer to make the google and twitter rounds as they hoped, they got spooked, LOL!! Oh well better kuck next time!

This sorta reminded me of that "fan" that was pushing that half naked Jake in bed photoshopped pic a few months back , they really tried hard to make that happened, even made twitter and other site, fortunately it was exposed as a fake.

When Jake said that he liked his fans im sure he wasn't talking about the online fans, LOL!

7:16, I don't think so. I made a type-o, I meant Jake and Taylor, not Jake and Reese. If it was them, they would have just deleted Zac's name and added Jake since Reese and Zac's name were originally there.

No, IMO the "fan" did that to fir that BI that was floating around and got spooked. They were either too dumb or lazy or both to realize that all she had to do is add Jake's name to ROA since Taylor is rumored and their was actual talk last yeat of Jake being interested.

Dumb as a box of dirt, that's a Jake "fan" for ya!!!

We know that they don't spend time together.

You seriously know where Austin is every weekend? I want dates and locations. As far as I remember there are only a handful of weekends when we know where Austin is.

There is no other reason for ]ake to sdpend so much time on the East Coast. Even when Maggie was pregnant and relying on Jake for help because Peter was filming Jake would spend a few weeks in NY, then a few weeks in LA.

Once Austin got the permanent gig and a bigger role--meaning more time working--Jake has stuck largely to the East Coast.

I don't know what goes on between J&A and what kind of relationship they have, but this is simply not true. His family lives in New York, mom, sister, brother-in-law, niece, extended relatives. Those people alone are good reasons for spending so much time on the East Coast. It doesn't make sense to simply dismiss his family as one of the reasons he is there. Makes you sound desperate, tbh.

Jake has the family he was born into and his own family now. No desperation, tbh.

It sounds like desperation because you are always eager to dismiss Jake's NY family, ties, play them down or pretend they don't exists.

It's like you pretend that Austin's family doesn't exisits when you always try to make a NY/Jake family connection and totally dismissing the fact that Austin's parents, sister, brother in law , niece and nephew live in TX and that he has spent more time visiting them there than going to L.A. or even NY

Austin wasn't hatched out of an egg, he has his family in TX.

As Always, Taylor Swift Lets Music Do the Talking

For a singer-songwriter who pours out her heart in song to near transparency, Taylor Swift is tightlipped when it comes to having probing discussions about her personal life.

..."The one thing that allows me to sleep at night is knowing that I've never confirmed who I write my songs about," the lanky blonde says with a sly smile.

And what about those strolls through Brooklyn with Jake Gyllenhaal? "I don't want to talk about it," she says, with typical sweetness.

Dear Ted:
Just wondering what's up with all this swapping spit Young Hollywood has going on, especially the Disney crowd. Nick Jonas dated both Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus, and Joe Jonas dated Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato. And after all is said and done they "all remain close friends." Sorry! Not buying it! Can't these kids find dates outside each other!
—Spit Swap

Dear Tween Scene:
It's like any group of young adults these days. You date around and sometimes that means dating your friend's exes or smooching with a close pal. In Hollywood, the eligible spit-swapping pool is a lot smaller though, hence the overlap. I wouldn't buy the "remaining close friends" crap though. Or there wouldn't be the kind of Disney drama we all heart so much.

Dear Ted:
We all know that nobody is really innocent in Hollywood. But in your humble opinion, which B.V. star deserves a little sympathy and why?
—BubbleYumSteph

Dear Sympathy for the Devil:
Hard to stay, Steph. See, I feel bad for a lot of ‘em. They're not able to always be who they want to be in H'wood, and sometimes this leads to not-so-noble actions, but it's a crappy sitch. I guess I feel bad for a lot of the closet cases, to be specific. The cheaters and divas are a whole different crowd.

Dear Ted:
Just a question about your thoughts on the Sexiest Man Alive. You mention it's always about promotion and timing; however, doesn't that also mean that the recipient has to want the title? Isn't it possible that a lot of guys like Ryan Gosling or Leonardo DiCaprio may view it as selling out? And guys like R.Pattz may view it as potentially damaging if they're already thought of as simply heartthrobs? Basically, would People give the title to a guy who doesn't want it?
—Sarah

Dear People Centerfold:
I don't think any of the dudes you listed are above being named People's Sexiest Man Alive. Just look at the alumni: George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Matt Damon. All actors taken seriously by the public and their peers. They just weren't hot enough by People's bizarro standards to nab the top spot.

Dear Ted:
Taylor Swift seemed (or seems, if you go buy the lyrics form her new CD) pretty heartbroken about her breakup with Joe Jonas. Was this romance as hot and heavy as she is trying to make it seem, or is it all fake publicity for CD sells? Was he more into her then Demi, or vice versa? Did Demi and Tay ever have a run-in over him?
—Marie

Dear Swift Answers:
No, yes and no.

Dear Ted:
You mentioned before that Priscilla Desert had more experience with boys than Parrish Maguire. Were you just assuming that? I mean, I get why one would assume that. If she's who I think she is, I think everyone assumed that she had given up her V-card long ago.
—Nini

Dear Moral Mirage:
Just because Pris hasn't gone all the way, doesn't mean that she hasn't racked up some horny action with the opposite sex. But she's definitely had more experience dating guys than Parrish. Hell, Priscilla has dated more gay guys than most gay guys have.

New York Magazine Review

[Review of "The King's Speech first]

Check out Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway on the cover of Entertainment Weekly looking nekkid nekkid nekkid—a great come-on for Love & Other Drugs, and not even false advertising. In the movie he is nekkid, and she is even nekkider, and they are very beautiful together in the nekkidness. The movie’s first half is a state-of-the-art Zeitgeist sex comedy, even if it’s set in 1996. It was morning in our brave new psychopharmacological world, and Big Pharma salesdude Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal) is at its hub, sweet-talking (and more or less bribing) physicians (and receptionists) into prescribing his SSRI (Zoloft) over an even slicker rival company’s (Prozac). He’s such a supple, smooth-faced, blue-eyed cutie that his transparently fake ingenuousness is more winning than other people’s genuine ingenuousness. And when word percolates up that his company has found the Holy Grail, the “fuck drug,” and called it “Viagra,” he really has the world by its gonads. Even better, he’s seeing gorgeous artist Maggie Murdock (Hathaway), with her dark eyes and swarm of dark ringlets and insatiable compulsion to get nekkid with him and then kick him out: She’ll be disappointed, she says, if it turns out he’s not a “shithead” and wants to commit.

This is gratifyingly slick and manic and mood-elevating. But Maggie has early-onset Parkinson’s (incurable, even by Big Pharma), and pretty soon you get the feeling she’s so commitment-averse because she’s afraid to show her deep-down, little-girl neediness. You also get the feeling that director Edward Zwick—who started with Thirtysomething and moved on to Oscar-bait war movies—has rediscovered his inner Jason Reitman. Like the charismatically irresponsible heroes of Thank You for Smoking and Up in the Air, Jamie must develop a social conscience and learn to love.

Love & Other Drugs is crazily uneven, jumping back and forth between jerk-off jokes and Parkinson’s sufferers sharing their stories of hope. It’s the sort of movie in which half the audience will be drying their eyes and the other half rolling them. In the first hour, Hathaway is impressive. She seems finally to have grown into those enormous features; her face no longer looks like a Disney Channel Halloween mask. But Zwick should have dialed her down a notch. By the end she’s a painful reminder of Liza Minnelli, another overeager, oversize-featured actress who tried to do too much with her too-muchness and left us crying for less.

Love & Other Drugs -
Sex Sells
Social Satire Comes Up Wanting

Drawn from the same murky well of Hollywood ethical ambiguity that gave us "Thank You for Smoking" and last year's "Up In the Air," "Love & Other Drugs" audaciously defines its slick anti-hero protagonist as beyond reproach. Jake Gyllenhaal's Jamie Randall is a sex-addicted stud whose effortless ability to bed women anytime/anywhere gets him fired from a peppy job selling electronics equipment to women of all ages during a bustling 1996 economy. Jamie's seduction skills are given greater consequence at his new position hawking drugs for Pfizer. Partnered with old-hand Big-Pharma peddler Bruce Winston (Oliver Platt), Jamie utilizes his mythologized appendage to help better place samples of Zoloft on the backroom shelves of doctors all over Pittsburg. Sleeping with doctor office receptionists has fiscal benefits. He has no ethical qualms about posing as a medical intern to "shadow" Dr. Stan Knight (Hank Azaria), an especially hard-sell who shares a similar free spinning moral compass. It's a line-crossing stunt that introduces Jamie to Parkinson's disease-suffering patient Maggie Murdoch (Anne Hathaway) via her exposed spider-bitten breast. Jamie and Maggie are commitment-phobes whose combustible sex life together is articulated to preclude any actual devotion of the heart.

Based on Jamie Reidy's memoir "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman," the by-committee script--from Charles Randolph, Marshall Herskovitz and co-writer/director Edward Zwick--bounces between comedic, dramatic, and indie genre conventions like a magnetized pinball. The grab-bag satire is so riddled with out of place irony that its artificial characters achieve an "uncanny valley" effect characteristic of robots who too closely exhibit human characteristics. The filmmakers are clearly banking on the allure of nude sex scenes between Gyllenhaal and Hathaway to attract audiences. While some blue-haired ladies might imagine the film's eroticism to possess some radical sensual style of integrity, there is nothing here that scratches at the intimate degree of pornographic expression in "Blue Valentine," which stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Jamie is a card-carrying stud to Maggie's status as a would-be-suicidal free spirit, i.e. slut-for-a-medical-reason. We get an early point-of-information alert about Big Pharma's third place on the Fortune 500 List as being worth all of the remaining 497 put together. These are shark infested waters. Jamie starts living the high life selling Viagra from the start of its popular launch. Unfortunately, Maggie's condition demands that Jamie take her on an active search for proper medical treatment.

Cole Smithey, pt 2 said...

"Love & Other Drugs" wants to lampoon a corporate milieu of medical industry corruption that promotes and sustains America's ongoing health care crisis. But it does it all wrong. Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway look too perfect naked together to be anything other than art. We accept the light-hearted entertainment like drinking a spiked cocktail. So what if Gyllenhaal's character is a reprehensible cad, he looks great and just so happy with that health-challenged Venus of a lass.

An example of where it will but it won't comes when Maggie attacks Jamie in the hospital parking lot after pegging him as an opportunistic drug sales rep rather than the intern he pretended to be during her physical examination. She pulls out a Polaroid camera and takes his photo as if prepared to litigate against him for his illicit activity with Dr. Knight. But nothing comes of the dangled plot-thread. So it is that the movie is laden with such absurdities that work against the eventual love story that the movie shakes out to be.

The film's worst transgression is the inclusion of a nerdy-but-filthy-rich younger brother for Jamie in the guise of a completely inappropriate Josh Gad. A masturbation gag involving a personal amateur sex video drops like a sack of sand on the film's lumpy tone. It's sickening to see such layers of irredeemable gloss shellacked over a story that should infuriate its audience.

With Pfizer coincidently in the headlines for corruption involving doctors paid enormous paychecks to lecture on specific drugs, "Love & Other Drugs" may have an unintended consequence of prompting a forum for people to discuss a medical system hamstrung by pharmaceutical companies. More likely however, it will do its ostensible purpose of acclimating citizens to the idea that we should like, respect, and lust after corrupt people, or at least embrace them for being people--yes even horny--people too.

Rated R. 113 mins. (C-) (Two Stars - out of five/no halves)

5. Love and Other Drugs

Ed Zwick’s Jake Gyllenhaal-Anne Hathaway romance “Love and Other Drugs” is getting pretty mixed reviews, with folks coming down hard on the film’s made-for-TV tone and manipulative sentimentality. That said, Gyllenhaal and Hathaway are basically naked for the entire film, so if the presence of “manipulative sentimentality” is less important to you than some sexy distraction from Thanksgiving’s general unsexiness, “Drugs” might be for you.

I was going to say that Priscilla could be Demi because of the drugs/alcohol rumors about her but Demi hasn't had that many boyfriends.

Someone should asked Ted if Priscilla and Reese's blind item have a gay actor in the closet common? I can't remember the BI name.

I would not stop having fantasies about actor because he's gay, its a fantasy whether he's gay or not. Do you women stop having fantasies about Brad Pitt because he's with Angelie Jolie?

Does that make sense?"

Sorry, I am late, but yes, you make perfect sense.

I saw Adam last week over here live and he is such a great guy, the concert was fantastic and the girls (and guys) loved him.

On the other hand it looks like Jake is fading into insignificance. LOAD reviews are mixed at best and at the moment the BO predictions are bad too.

Priscilla is Taylor Swift. Ted could hardly be more obvious. There are no drug rumors about Priscilla. The "alcohol" rumor is just that she used to like to drink with her friends in high school. Ted's making a joke because Taylor S. has "dated" Taylor Lautner (Parrish MacGuire), Joe Jonas (don't know if he has a BV name, but lots of gay rumors) and now Jake (Toothy). He even refers to her and Joe Jonas in another question in the Bitch Back.

The reviews for LAOD are disappointing. Even most of the positive ones have reservations. In the local ABC piece, the guy talks about Jake dating Taylor Swift.

That got me to thinking that Jake will never come out as gay. Disclaimer here, that is if he's gay. It would make him a bad guy for using Reese, Taylor etc. I know they agreed to it but still I wouldn't trust either one of them not to play "I tried really hard to love him, to change him" card. Jake will never step up because basically he can't. I also believe in karma, when a person with a conscience knows they are doing something wrong, the universe can't help but turn on them.

The only way Jake will ever be out is if someone finally comes forward or he gets caught by a everyday person with a twitter, i-phone etc. IF he is indeed gay or bi or whatever.

But this is a fact, the boy is aging quickly.

In a Friday night appearance promotion for his upcoming film I Love You Phillip Morris, Jim Carrey called David Letterman on a dumb line of questioning.

Asked Dave: "And, in terms of a leading man, a heterosexual playing a homosexual, do homosexuals say 'well, that shouldn't have been a homosexual' or do you worry about your image as a heterosexual leading man playing a homosexual?"

Replied Carrey: "Boy, we haven't grown at all, have we? We haven't grown at all.... We're still children in the schoolyard. Honestly. No offense Dave, for god's sakes, have you ever seen a gay man? Are there gay people in Indiana? Is it ok to be gay there, is what I'm asking. There's not a policy against gay people there or here?"

If Taylor is Priscilla and dates gay guys, wouldn't she know that Joe was gay? So Ted's reply below doesn't make sense to the first question:

Ted's answer:
No...

Which part of the question is no?

Ted's translation said...

^ I think the 'NO' is for the first part of the question. This is how I read it:

LAOD will make money worldwide, it will more than make its budget. So this will not ruin Jake or pull him out of the closet. So far Jake does not have the "stink" from his movies that did not do well domestically.

It was a double edge sword for Anne, it was too much praise early on and the negative reviews seem to be about her or the script itself. Once again Jake will smell like a rose no matter how the film does stateside.

Anonymous said...

Boxofficemojo predicts $38 million cumulative--and the film was budgeted at $30 million. Not a huge hit but it'll recoup a bit. Remember, it has VERY BIG competition (Harry Potter, Tangled) and that Burlesque film might end up being a minor camp hit.

Most play by the rules because they want to become famous and rich.

I myself did it for over 10 yrs faking heterosexuality - i appeared and acted straight that was the best acting ive ever done. I mean i even had my first kiss with a girl when i was doing a tv commercial as a teen.

It has been in the last 5 yrs that i said- fuck it and im openly out.

Sure producers and agents, managers, publicist will advice you to better say "your bisexual" than to say your gay or lesbian because its more socially acceptable.

But as we have seen recently with Ricky Martin and Sean Hayes....its not easy hiding, pretending etc

Part of me was pissed that they waited so long but i also understood why they did it, because they were afraid of losing their careers and money.

In the end you have to decide if the sacrifice is worth the benefit... are you happy with the trade off?

I was not and so sure ive lost work because of it but i no longer have anxiety and panic attacks and stress over getting "outed".

I think the problem with Jake is his desperation to become a Hollywood star. He is following a rational strategy (probably designed by his PR) choosing movies that on paper sound like vehicles to become a star (but when they are done they have no value at all), instead of choosing with his instinct interesting projects that stretch him as an actor and that in the long term would give him a longer career. His manufactured tabloid image and the showmances also show his priorities.

So many of the reviews call Josh Gad's character "inappropriate," "unnecessary," "obnoxious," "icky," but in the HuffPo interview Jake refers to him as "the engine in this film" and "a force to be reckoned with. He brought all the humor and energy to the movie, and was a huge influence on me, and an inspiration in terms of comedy. He's a great actor."

I'm going to give Jake the benefit of the doubt and assume he was trying to be kind to one of his co-stars. I do think it's awfully hard to objectively judge a movie that you're in (or that you wrote or directed). Also, considering how inappropriate a lot of reviewers think Gad's jerk-off scene is, it's ironic that Jake said "Because we love the genre, we wanted to give it more respect than people have in the last little while." Hmmm....

Reviews usually do not matter so much for romcoms, most get horrible reviews. But I think that on paper the fil was one that would appeal to older audiences--and for them reviews matter more. I also think the problems include things thrown in to get a younger audience, but do not think it will be enough to draw them in.

This critic liked Jake but HATED Anne and her character:

Love and Other Drugs” awkwardly combines drama and comedy but has no laughs to distract from Maggie’s unlikeability, which makes Jamie’s attraction to her seem all the more based on Maggie’s heavy sexual appetite. Hathaway’s smugness, suggesting that Maggie thinks she’s much more interesting than she really is, puts a major damper on both the movie’s lightness and sad set-up, which is redeemed only by Gyllenhaal’s remarkably charismatic performance. If he weren’t already a movie star, this movie would make him one.

Thanks to the ubiquity of promotional materials for this weekend’s romantic comedy Love and Other Drugs, we've been seeing a lot of a half-naked Jake Gyllenhaal. Sitting there chiseled, blue-eyed, and shirtless, an equally unclothed Anne Hathaway clutching his arm, he sure looks like a movie star. And he’s been carrying himself like one to boot (at ease, likable, charming the pants off David Letterman, and allegedly Taylor Swift). But is he the real deal? Though he’s amassed an impressive and varied body of work for a 29-year-old, he’s still without a hit to call his very own. His bald attempt to leap from serious Oscar bait to a big popcorn franchise, Prince of Persia, was an audible flop. Now he's going for the wide-appeal romantic comedy. Is Gyllenhaal a bankable movie star just waiting for the right project? Or a character actor trapped in a leading man’s shirtless body? On the eve of Other Drugs' release, we asked industry insiders these questions, plus the old standby: If Jake Gyllenhaal were a stock, should you buy, sell, or hold?

Not surprised about the bad reviews showing up on RT. If they thought they were going to be favorable there would have been no need for withholding them. Terribly disappointed for Jake though. How many duds in a row is this now.

Same. 4th dud in a row, btw.

It was very telling when the movie wasn't accepted at any of the big film festivals though.

3:56, Michael Phillips' review of LAoD is on RT. He didn't like the movie. He praised some of Anne's work but seemed less enthralled with Jake.

RT is now at 29% (24 reviews - 17 rotten)

Who is Michael Phillips?

So what? We already know the movie will be a turkey. Reviews suck and no way in hell they'll beat Harry Potter on opening weekend. And like all of Jake's movies, except for BBM, LAOD will stay 2 or 3 weeks in the top 5. Everyone who has been following Jake for years, expects and knows this.

So I say, relex and go watch the movie if you want. I sure do. I even liked PoP and most of the people i know who saw it liked it too. It was a solid b.o. hit success outside of North America. :)

Even Burlesque has a higher RT rating than LAOD.

WoW EW gave it a bad review. Why the hell did they want Jake and Anne on the cover? Don't they do covers only for movies they consider to be good? Baffled!

Very very smart statement. Jake so much wants to be the leading man. Maybe Jake needs to relax a little and rethink things. He is so damn obbsessed with proving he is Hetero that it is hurting his acting and decisions. I truly believe this now especially after what he said about BBM being acting and that is why hw made LAOD. I don't think he was joking at all.

I'm surprised the masses aren't breaking out the champagne after that NYMag article. It confirms all your hopes and dreams for Jake; that he's a failure at the BO.

COME ON! LETS PARTY!!!!!

5:18 PM - projecting much?

Our hopes and dreams for Jake are for him to be himself and do roles that he will be successful in, not to be some hyped up faux hetero tabloid star careening from one bad movie to another that he has probably taken because it fits into the mold of what he and his people thinks he needs to do to be a STAR.

I agree, destiny. In another video interview the interviewer comments that Jake and Anne had hetero sex once in BBM too and Jake says something like yeah but we have hetero sex many, many, MANY times in this one. Hmm.

According to twitter Jake has cancelled an upcoming interview.

Lisa Schwarzbaum is an excellent critic too. I'm sorry but the more I read about the brother, the more I want to puke.

L.A. Times gave it a positive and N.Y. Times a negative review.

I don't know what the hell 5:18PM is ranting about. The NYMag article was fairly written. It wasn't a slam against Jake at all and it made some good points. It even ended up with the positive note that if he were stock, they would "buy." I don't see anyone celebrating or wishing for anyone to fail.

From EW review. The second reviewer to specifically mention Jake' teeth, lol:

"Jamie is an impressive bed-hopper with believable skills, given Gyllenhaal's charm and his excellent white teeth"

Me too. It's frustrating, because from the reviews it sounds like it had the potential to be a great movie but Zwick apparently decided to roll the dice on crude and stupid.

The NY Times critic Tony (A.O.) Scott actually liked the first hour (I think NY Mag critic also liked the first hour) and then said it fell apart in the second half.
