Feels So Good That It Can’t Be Wrong

Ricky Martin Ricky Martin, "Me" book signing, November 2010

There is something beautiful in witnessing a major celebrity in the throes of profound and real transformation. A week before we meet, Ricky Martin had made a surprise appearance at the annual Human Rights Campaign national dinner to pledge his support. “Something as simple as standing at that dinner and saying, ‘I’m gay,’ creates so may emotions I’ve never felt before,” he admits. “I didn’t do it earlier because of fear, and, bottom line, it was all in my head. I was seduced by fear, and I was sabotaging most of my life -- my music, my relationships with my friends, with my family, with everybody. That’s something I need to share because I know that a lot of people are going through what I went through, no matter what their age, and fear cannot control us.”

Ricky Martin is about to share big time -- with his new memoir, Me, a remarkably heartfelt account of his journey from teen group Menudo to fatherhood, delivered in a frank, conversational style that doesn’t economize on the truth. It includes accounts of his first passionate affairs -- with men and with women -- as well as his struggle to reconcile his conflicted yearnings with his rapid ascent in America. The pivotal year is 1999, at which Martin performed his World Cup anthem, “La Copa de la Vida,” at the Grammys. Largely unknown in the United States beyond Hispanic audiences, he left the stage as a breathless Rosie O’Donnell (the evening’s host) exclaimed, “Who was that cutie patootie?”

It was connecting the dots that led directly to Martin’s tweet last March. In his memoir, he recounts how friends and colleagues remonstrated with him to hold off: “I ignored all their recommendations, and by the end, when they came to me with the argument that I shouldn’t do it during Easter because it might offend my Christian fans, I said: ‘What part of ‘I can’t take it any more’ do you not understand? What about me?’”

Above all, he says he worried about Matteo and Valentino having to answer for their father’s untruths. How would they respond as they grew older? Would they have to lie on his behalf? “How could I teach my kids to lie?” he asks. “How could I teach them not to be themselves?” And, as simple as that, he realized he couldn’t and wouldn’t. “My children will grow up with no prejudice,” he says. “As parents, we need to create a new way of thinking for our kids, in which we accept, and we love, and we can vibe with everybody.”

and we thought Reeke was his lowest point...

Anonymous said...

Jake loves to test his fans loyalty!

Anonymous said...

Well, trolly will be happy! lol

Jake didn't learn a thing from Reeke.

Agree that the Denby review is over the top--and awfully short for a new "classic". Meanwhile he devotesd several pages to Black Swan. Hmmmmm.....

Jake Gyllenhall is gay as a goose and he doesn't fight homophobia - he deserves to be outed.

Anonymous said...

US cover is predictable, start with the sidebars, a couple weeks later comes the cover. These celebs sure "fall in love" quickly don't they? I don't even have to read it to know what it says, they just whip out the template.

Babblers will grit their teeth while choking out, "As long as Jake's happy, we're happy." Gradually they'll start to talk about how "mature" Taylor is, lol, and how they're glad she doesn't have the baggage that Reese had. They've already forgotten how perfect Reese was ;)

out a straight man.

I don't believe in outing myself. But if someone is straight they can't be outed, lol. So nothing to fret about, right?

Anonymous said...

10:00 AM - please stop insulting everyone's intelligence after 10.000 Reeke showmance photos.

Anonymous said...

And yes I am so jealous of Taylor Swift

oh, man, that's just sad and pathetic.

but she has done something that Reese couldn't do, make Jake happy.

LMAO. Damn, that was fast. Not one minute after the 9:59 post that predicted it. Reese didn't make Jake happy? Hmmm.... that wasn't the song babblers were singing for 2.5 years. How quickly we forget ...

Anonymous said...

How long do you think this bearding contract will be? I think 2 years with renewable clause. This one will be long term for sure.

Anonymous said...

Yes, fangirls forgot all those Reeke engagements, marriages and pregnancies and how happy they were about them! LMAO

Anonymous said...

This one will be long term for sure.

Why? Taylor Swift's previous contracts were short term, right?

Anonymous said...

Oh, definitely long-term. Two years sounds about right.

Anonymous said...

But Jakey will be the guy who's "different" than the others. The true love. The Prince Charming. Not the immature Taylor Lautner or Joe Jonas. And not the evil sleazy douche John Mayer. His people will make sure that he's not lumped in with those guys, lol.

Jake is back in L.A. he was spotted at LAX via FB. There was a tweet about him going to some interview, I guess he is still doing LAOD PR before he goes to OZ with Annie for the premeire.

PS: JAke and Taylor are on the front cover of US, pics of them in Brooklyn for Thanksgiving.

"Why? Taylor Swift's previous contracts were short term, right?"

In her latest interviews she said she is looking for a serious relationship this time and that she hasn't have her 'big love' yet. She is trying to fix the 'slutty' image and transition to a more mature look. I think it's all set for Jake to be her US weekly publicity 'prince'. He talks endlessly about wanting to settle down. So this looks like a long term deal. Her next album will be all about him, her first real relationship and how straight and perfect he is.

Taylor's marketing skills make Reese look like an amateur. 'US Reekly' is now 'US Swiftly'. US is working closely with her PR. They recently had an special edition issue dedicated to her and every regular issue has her publicity ads.

Anonymous said...

Oh, definitely long-term. Two years sounds about right.

Based on what? Taylor wasn't dumped by her husband, doesn't have kids and doesn't have to worry about Avon contract.

Anonymous said...

"doesn't have to worry about Avon contract."

Taylor has a CoverGirl contract and she is launching her perfume next year. She even has Taylor Swift Barbie dolls! She is a brand.

Anonymous said...

^Taylor also has a Taylor Swift clothing line.

Anonymous said...

She is a brand.

I know that, the question is why someone thinks that she would beard for years with Jake.

Anonymous said...

His people will make sure that he's not lumped in with those guys, lol.

His people??? Taylor Swift's people will make decisions.

10:32 AM said...

Thanks for the answers, you are too fast for me :)

Anonymous said...

"I know that, the question is why someone thinks that she would beard for years with Jake."

Because he is exactly what she needs for her brand image right now.

Anonymous said...

Right now, but not for two years.

Anonymous said...

Yes.

Taylor's marketing skills make Reese look like an amateur.

See the article about her in Forbes linked yesterday. No one beats the Swifty team at marketing.

Anonymous said...

Right now, but not for two years.

This will not be a flash-in-the-pan. She has to distinguish this "romance" from the others. She is very carefully trying to move her image from tween idol to adult. Watch for changes in how she dresses, looks, what she talks about in interviews, etc. You can bet she won't be making finger hearts, lol.

Taylor doesn't need Jake but he sure needs her, and boy did he hit a goldmine! Young, no kids, rich, popular and a lot smarter than she lets on.

Anonymous said...

A goldmine??? Jake will again be used to make someone else look good, not good public image for a leading man.

Anonymous said...

I just don't see what's in it for her, or why her so-called "team" would want it for her career.

Anonymous said...

a lot smarter than she lets on

LOL! Yeah, right.

Anonymous said...

She's doing just fine on her own, why mess with success?

Anonymous said...

Jake wants to be a leading man but he always has a supporting role in his beardings.

Anonymous said...

Taylor Swift needs and wants publicity like everyone else. She isn't popular because she's very talented or has great personality or voice - she's popular because she has great team.

Anonymous said...

"I just don't see what's in it for her, or why her so-called "team" would want it for her career."

She is all about romantic fairytales and she needs a prince to sell it.

She is in a transition to a mature image and she needs to clean her previous flings and the John Mayer fiasco. Her fanbase is conservative and they were starting to call her a slut. She can't keep dating around. She needs to create a solid relationship that also gives her maximum publicity. win/win.

Well, linking her with John Mayer was not a wise business decision, if that's what it was.

Trolly is pissed off because a lot of people don't like Jake's new beard.

Babblers and fangirls are going to get ulcers pretending they love Taylor, lol. But they'll take one for the Jakey team and do it. Pretty soon they'll all be saying she's the best thing that ever happened to him.

Anonymous said...

John Mayer came and went before you could blink and she got a song out of it, lol.

Anonymous said...

The only song I could think of would be Good Riddance. lol She really hasn't had much of a dating history. :)

Denby shouldn't have reviewed LaOD for the New Yorker considering his personal connection to Naomi and that he moderated that Q & A with Jake. I'm actually surprised he was the one who wrote a review. I thought for sure it would be Anthony Lane (he would have SHREDDED the film--even worse than Rex Reed and Kyle Smith--but done it in an overly intellectual, elegant manner). I'm guessing Lane didn't have time to see LaOD or he couldn't be bothered.

I haven't seen Black swan yet but from what I'm hearing--it's extraordinary and Portman is not only a lock for Best Actress but she may take the Oscar away from Hollywood fave Annette Bening (who was great in The Kids are All Right but AMAZING in Mother and Child).

Anonymous said...

About Taylor Swift--does anyone really think she's going to pop out a few babies for Jake at this stage in her life? She's very young and very young (child-like for her age) and is VERY busy and ambitious right now. She's a barely out of her teens country music superstar and she's going to settle down soon and bear Jake's babes.

Ain't happening. You'll see. This pairing surprises me because of that.

Anonymous said...

There is no way Taylor Swift would ever do that and Jake would have to be an idiot in order to want Taylor Swift as mother of his kid(s).

Anonymous said...

This pairing surprises me because of that.

Don't get it - because of what?

Anonymous said...

Jake’s career was at risk but now I think it’ll be over after this latest stunt. Jake must be the most desperate closet case to agree to start this bearding. Who the hell sold this to him as the best career move?

The Oscar competition should be really keen this year. Just saw a trailer for "The King's Speech" with Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter. Wow.

What does this have to do with her beraing kids???

Anonymous said...

Jake's people know that the JiG crowd is on to him and they won't fall for bearding, but in the grand scheme of things, it's a small crowd and there's nothing they can do about them anyway. Rabid fangirls will eat up any shit they scoop out even if some of them have to hold their noses while eating so they don't worry about them. They're playing to the general public - the ones who buy US and People all the time and the ones who just scan the cover while in line at the grocery story, the people who tune into the infotainment junk like Entertainment Tonight. Very, very easy to fool the general public, look at all the celebs that having been doing it for a lot longer than Jake :)

Anonymous said...

Taylor Lautner has a new beard, too.

Anonymous said...

Very, very easy to fool the general public

It is. It is much harder to make Jake Gyllenhaal interesting or relevant.

Anonymous said...

It is much harder to make Jake Gyllenhaal interesting or relevant.

The truth of that is depressing. He doesn't have much on his own schedule after LAOD promo. Lots of time to follow Swifty around and look like a wimp again - only an even bigger and older one.

Anonymous said...

I don't think this bearding will translate into interesting job offers for Jake or selling more tickets at the box office. It's the same that happened with Reeke, the only one who benefits from the arrangement is the beard.

I think Jake's PR has no idea how to market him. It's clear now after he tanked as an action hero (POP) and a romantic lead (LAOD), that the mainstream audience doesn't find him interesting enough to be a leading man and they can't force-fed the public marketing him as a 'star' just because he is featured in US weekly with his powerful beards. They are using a failed formula that they already tried with Reese and it didn't work.

His PR doesn't know how to sell him to a niche target audience that will be interested in buying his real 'product' that in the end could make him a star in his own right. He definitely needs new management, perhaps a younger generation PR team with fresh ideas and not his current PR dinosaurs stuck in 1950.

Anonymous said...

True. Female public buys her songs, read tabloids and watch romcoms, but "new fans" won't pay to see Jake's movie.

Taylor Image is so manufactured. First of all, she's from Pennsylvania, not Nashville. Her father is a millionaire with connections to the industry who paid 2 million for Big Machine records to make Taylor a music star.

ONTD post

The comments are extremely negative and almost all saying they are fake.

Some comments are funny: "From Joe Jonas, to Lautner, to Gyllenhaal. She's really moving up on the bearding totem pole. Impressive, Swifty, very impressive...next step George Clooney"
