A Place in the Sun

Montgomery Clift

during shooting of 'Red River', circa 1948

The Advocate: There are so many biographies of Montgomery Clift and numerous websites devoted to him. What was the biggest surprise you learned about him while researching your book?
Amy Lawrence: I was most impressed by Clift’s canny understanding of his own image. Many biographers depict him as refusing to participate in the Hollywood star system, but that didn’t mean he was ignorant of it. He understood how an actor’s image was built and maintained. In giving interviews or choosing roles, he knew exactly how to shape a performance to achieve the effect he wanted — and to resist the efforts of others to simplify a character. For instance, he was aware that screenwriters and directors often wanted to make the hero perfect; Clift wanted to make the character human, complicated, and not always admirable.

Q: Clift is often spoken of in context as a “gay actor” or in conjunction with Marlon Brando and James Dean. What do you see as Clift’s singular legacy?
A: Brando and Dean both thought of Clift as singular. Brando saw Clift as his only major competition, and Dean saw him as a model, an ideal to emulate. Unlike those performers, Clift’s best work has not become dated. In Red River, From Here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun, I Confess, and half a dozen others, his performances are impeccable. At his best he is never mannered or predictable. His performances are subtle, intelligent, graceful, and deeply empathetic regardless of the character’s flaws.

Q: How did Clift’s being gay — or bisexual, as some suggest — when it was still taboo affect his drinking, drug taking, and ultimate downward spiral?
A: The homophobia of the time, which intensified nationally just as Clift’s career was beginning in the late 1940s and early ’50s, certainly exerted pressure on Clift. A serious relationship with choreographer Jerome Robbins in the ’40s threatened both their careers when Robbins was blackmailed into testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings regarding communists and other “subversives” in Washington and the entertainment community. I would be hesitant, though, to cast Clift as a “sad young man,” “self-loathing homosexual,” or fit him into any other category into which gay men were sorted from the 1950s to ’70s. Alcoholism affects everyone, and in the postwar period heavy drinking was routine across the board. By the time Clift’s drinking became full-blown alcoholism, it was impossible to disentangle from his devastating car accident, the prescription painkillers he needed at the time, and his professional fear regarding the damage done to his face. In the latter part of his career, his drinking and drug taking were so dominant in his life that he couldn’t function without them. Paradoxically, at the point when he worked with unsupportive or openly hostile homophobic producers and directors, the drugs and drinking sustained him as much as they destroyed him.

Q: You write about the fan magazines of the 1950s that frequently used sexually suggestive headlines such as “Who Is Monty Kidding?” How well known was the truth about Clift’s sexuality during that era?
A: Clift worked in a period when fan magazines were challenged by scandal magazines, each promising “the truth” about stars’ private lives. Ironically, even the scandal rags did not want any “truth” firmly established because that would rob them of the chance to repeatedly tantalize readers with the next promised exposé. Biographical information suggests that people who worked with Clift always “knew” in exact proportion to what they wanted to know. Fans likewise. Everyone minimized the complexity of Clift’s emotional relationships — with men, older women, young women — in order to maintain the image of the actor that appealed to them most.

Q: A recent article in Newsweek suggests audiences can’t accept gay actors as romantic leading men when we know the truth about their real-life sexuality and uses Rock Hudson as an example. How do you think this applies to Clift, who had such intense chemistry on-screen with Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses?
A: When audiences think they know something about an actor’s personal sexuality it becomes available as a touchstone to spectators watching a performance but is never mandatory. People judging a performance often appreciate it most the more it varies from what we think we know about the performer — casting against type, nice people playing psychos, beautiful actresses playing ugly. If we think of Clift as an actor, then his persuasiveness as a romantic lead opposite Taylor, Olivia de Havilland, or Jennifer Jones increases our appreciation of his skill as he seems to become inseparable from the role.

Another issue is history itself. As new generations are introduced to Clift and Hudson, they often react to the performers without knowing any biographical information about them. They are also less invested in “the truth” than those who experienced a change in their perception through revelations and the exposure of secrets. The freer sexuality of Brando or Dean, for instance, has not come to dominate their images.

Q: How do you think Clift would have fared personally and professionally if he began his career today, with the intrusion of the Internet and paparazzi?
A: The intrusion of the media today is offset by the openness of some gay performers — though not romantic leading men just yet. As Tom Cruise’s career shows, it is possible to withstand rumors and media speculation if you have the power and the will to do so. Because Clift was never as closeted as Rock Hudson, I don’t believe he would fight terribly hard to maintain the illusion of offscreen heterosexuality. He might be more likely to take a Keanu Reeves approach, where the actor neither courts nor tries to dispel the fantasies of any fan. In several roles in the severely repressive 1950s he even courted audiences to read his characters — and maybe himself — as gay in the casually flirtatious scenes in Red River, the rejection of heterosexual relationships in I Confess, Suddenly, Last Summer, and Freud, the material on gay Army life that acts as a subtext throughout From Here to Eternity, and the relationship with Frank Sinatra’s character in the film.

He's actually, first and foremost, the Vice Chancellor of Germany (equivalent to Deputy Prime Minister in parliamentary democracies), which means he's second in command of the German goverment. So Germany has a right-wing coalition government with a woman and a gay, married man as the chief executives. That's pretty incredible and it's virtually impossible to imagine such a situation occuring anywhere outside of Western or Central Europe.

The Abbey is unique in that it's one of the few remaining big-profile places that is known as a hotspot first, gayspot second. Everyone in SoCal knows that the Abbey is a gay bar, but its position as one of the trendiest places in image-conscious LA (thanks to the gays) means the trendy heteros flock to it as well.

And that's what makes The Abbey so awesome.

That said... I recently had my 30th birthday in big pimpin' limousine fashion and I took over a dozen friends, even split between gay and straight, to The Abbey... and the straight guys in the party were VERY uncomfortable. Too much gay going on for them! The straight guys' girlfriends, however, LOVED it, and since they couldn't get their hetero mates to dance with them, they paired off with the closets gay they could find!

I thought of all the places I could get my straight friends to be introduced in a gay setting friendly to my hetero male friends, I thought the Abbey would be it... but it just goes to show how the Abbey really isn't *that* mainstream. Just isn't.

Keram thinks Ted C. is completely full of shit on a number of issues, including Toothy Tile and Lea/Dianna. Keram's sources are direct, not fangurls with unsubstantiated fantasies.

Keram knows that Eliza Dushku is straight but perfectly content with her brother being a 'mo and totally gay-friendly in general (many of her bffs are gay guys). Don't hate.

Keram has heard nothing on Ryan Gosling other than him being a hetero guy with an unusually broad spectrum of tastes in women.

George Clooney Looks to Chris Pine, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Paul Giamatti for His Next Directorial Effort, Farragut North said...

Three years ago, George Clooney announced his intention to direct a big-screen adaptation of the off-Broadway play Farragut North, a political drama about campaign dirty tricks written by former Democratic political operative Beau Willimon. Now it seems like Clooney is finally electing to do it: Vulture hears that he plans to start shooting this February, and a cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, and possibly Chris Pine is coming together.

Willimon (who also wrote the initial draft of the movie adaptation) was inspired to write the screenplay after his work campaigning for Howard Dean in 2004. Accordingly, the story is set in Des Moines, Iowa, just weeks before the state’s Democratic caucuses officially commence; it follows the exploits of a twentysomething presidential campaign spinmeister/wunderkind named Stephen Myers, and the dirty pool he plays to get his candidate the nomination against a rival senator. Leonardo DiCaprio was once attached to play the role of Myers, but appears to have backed out; sources tell Vulture that Clooney is planning to offer the role to Star Trek's Chris Pine, who received accolades when he played the part in last year's L.A. stage production.

Brad Pitt had originally wanted to do the play's other major role: Paul Zara, Myers's hard-bitten veteran boss on the trail. However, with a packed schedule that may prove this impossible, Hoffman has agreed to step in.Giamatti is set to play the campaign manager of the rival candidate, and Clooney has offers out to Evan Rachel Wood (to play a teen staffer with whom Myers has a sexual dalliance) and Marisa Tomei (for the role of a probing journalist). We also hear Clooney plans take a small role in the movie; the only one left seems to be that of the candidate himself, who is never seen in the stage version and is a minor character in the screenplay.

Sources tell us that the reps for Clooney — who is based at Sony — are now in negotiations about a distribution deal for the film. Insiders are quick to note, however, that Sony won't be picking up the check for the movie: Instead, while Clooney leans to the left, this production will be running as an independent. Talks are afoot with French indie financier Philippe Rousselet (who's also producing the Jake Gyllenhaal-thriller Source Code at Summit Entertainment) about possibly footing the bill, with Sony only distributing the finished product.

Still, even if Rousselet doesn't write a check, finding funding with this cast shouldn't require kissing a lot of babies.

Chris Pine said...

And when the very pleasant Pine called to chat about his upcoming thriller "Unstoppable" a few days after the Clooney news surfaced, we had to ask his thoughts about it.

"I have, I mean, I don't know what you're talking about," he said with some hesitation.

"I love that part, I love the story," said Pine, who received rave reviews in the lead role of "Farragut" onstage last year. "I think it's a wonderful, wonderful story about a really intelligent young guy who's kind of hyper-articulate, and spinning a bunch of plates at once, that's obviously hiding a lot of trauma and a lot of insecurity and a lot of hurt. And to work with George Clooney, that would be pretty f---ing awesome."

Adam Lambert Faces Fashion Police, Real Police After Paparazzi Attack said...

Turns out, Adam Lambert doesn't reserve all of his passion for the stage. The glamtastic American Idol runner-up released his inner beast on a paparazzo who encroached a little too closely on the singer's private time yesterday. "Eeew paparazzi killed my peaceful afternoon on the beach! #howisthisok?" he tweeted.

As it happens, it isn't OK. At least not according to the complaint filed by the shutterbug last night.

View the police report

Per the report, cameraman Victor Eras, 38, informed Miami Beach police that he was the victim of misdemeanor battery, getting "knocked to the ground" during the altercation, and that his backpack, where he claims his expensive camera was housed, was wrestled to the ground. The only (fairly big) problem? In the now very widespread photos of the incident, his camera is actually in his hand, safe and sound. Curious.

If cops determine that the charges are warranted—and that suddenly seems like quite a big if—they will turn the case over to the state attorney and Lambert could face a $1,000 fine.

We're guessing it's a chunk of change the singer wouldn't mind coughing up, should it come to that. 'Cause he certainly didn't seem to worry about incriminating himself (there goes that plea deal). "They're real good at provoking, but there ain't any pics or video of the b.s. they spew out…Haha well…I lost my temper for a sec but wow it felt great lol MIAMI!!!" he tweeted.

Although, smackdown aside, Lambert did give a bit of artistic credit to the paparazzi who were on hand that day.

"Hahha the photos are hilarious!!" Lol please everyone forgive me for that hat. –I was attempting a disguise- clearly failed. Hahah." Apology accepted.

Rachel Bilson "not dating" Chace Crawford

Rachel Bilson has denied dating Chace Crawford.

The 29-year-old former OC actress, who split from long-term boyfriend Hayden Christensen earlier this year, said that she only knows Gossip Girl star Crawford because she is "friends" with his manager.

The rumours started when onlookers said that "there was lots of flirting going on between the two of them" over dinner with friends at The Lion in New York last weekend.

Bilson's representative told Us Magazine: "She's friends with his manager and has known Chace for a while. The dinner was with a bunch of people, and it was simply a friendly dinner. I can say with 100% certainty they are not dating."

Crawford was recently romantically linked to Kelly Osbourne.

Aww. You are refering to this incident with that disgusting blogger, right? Poor Jake, I felt sorry for him when I read about it. Some may not agree, but Jake loved Heath. Unfortunately Heath was a heartbreaker until the end.

Jake, please calm down, TeamJasonBerry isn't the only one who would ask that, be prepared to answer without involving police!

And what does your opinion that he was "reckless with his lovers and with his life" have to do with the ugly dsf incident?

Because it broke everyone's heart. I'm not the original poster, btw.

Maybe Jake lashed out because it's a sore subject, broke his heart of course as well.

... While we're chatting—what the heck is wrong with Dashed Dingle-Dream! Settling for crumbs from Judas Jack-Off when he was once offered the whole dang cake (as in wedding)? Is he so sprung that he's willing to take what he can get?
—Donna

Dear Love vs. Lust:
... As for Mr. Dingle Dream, well, I guess you could say he's desperate for some JJO in his life. Jud is a hard guy to get over.

Dear Ted:
So, after seeing those pictures, I'm thinking Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams would be the perfect couple. I think she's the only person I could accept him dating besides Rachel McAdams. What do you think?
—Tay

Dear Rachel Redux:
Keep rooting for it, 'cause I could actually see this one happening. And it's probably a good sign that their celeb couple nickname could be "Willing." Jeez, that'd be like the most gorgeous duo ever

Dear Ted:
Thanks to your intrepid insights and saucy stories, we're enthralled by the, shall we say, "duplicity" of so many of our fave stars, and trust, we love it! Would you indulge a 50 Cent fan and confirm if he's ever sung a B.V. tune?
—R-Train

Dear Cent for Your Thoughts:
Not only is 50 one of our fave hip-hop alums, but he's also a member of the highly prestigious Blind Vice Superstars. Come to think of it, this dude is one of my personal fave Vices.

Dear Ted:
Out of all three Jonas Brothers, which one is most likely to become a B.V. first?

Dear Ted:
Has Ryan Gosling ever been a Blind Vice? Is the whole "he's so hard to work with" thing true?
—Mrs. Gosling

Dear How Dare You:
I've never heard anyone say such a thing about our Ry! He's a great guy, but he's also a serious actor. He's very professional and takes his acting seriously, but I'd hardly say that makes him difficult to work with.

Dear Ted:
Can you settle a bet between me and my friends, please? Would Mooney Van Dangle's familial scandal be something entertainment news followers would be familiar with or is this something that has not been picked up by many mainstream gossip outlets?
—Practice What You Preach

Dear Dangling the Goods:
Everyone whose behavior Mooney's been bitchin' about is pretty common knowledge. It's just Van Dangle's naughty, naughty biz that's kept on the DL. But for how long?

Dear Ted:
Is there anyone straight left in Hollywood? Can you give us a couple of names? Also, are any of your B.V.s straight?
—Amber

Dear Straight Edge:
Of course! The whole friggin' town hasn't gone gay! So I'll name names, Blind Vice and otherwise: Ryan Gosling, Buddy Rib-Toast, Ryan Reynolds and Buck Me-Good. Will that satisfy you for a while?

Dear Ted:
So I'm thinking. Sometimes you need to Blind a Vice for legal reasons. But do you think that in a lot of cases the perp just wouldn't care? Or sometimes is it just fun to watch us go mad trying to guess?
—CasaFan

Dear Getting Tricky:
Oh, they'd care all right. It would—sadly—be career-altering stuff if any of the Vices got revealed. But I do get a good chuckle when people guess the really hard ones. Not much gets past you guys.

Dear Ted:
What's Topher Hairy-Tuchus been up to? How is his career going? Is he still up to his dirty, dirty and no-so-secretive ways, or is he laying low (or maybe spending time with a possible beard)?
—T.H.

Dear Hairy Assed:
Toph has been laying fairly low on both accounts, career and romance, which is surprising, seeing as he was the biggest name in the Biz for a second. I have no doubt he'll be back on top in a minute though.

Anonymous said...

I thought Topher Hairy-Tuchus is Bradley Cooper, but "he was the biggest name in the Biz for a second" doesn't fit.

The "biggest name" is a Ted exaggeration, but The Hangover got a LOT of press for Cooper and the other actors (as did The A-Team to a lesser extent). I think they're making a sequel to The Hangover.

Everyone Wants to See These Photos

Big dilemma over at a major magazine. They are the first to receive multiple photos of a very famous actor in compromising positions with other men. So why aren’t they racing every other magazine and tabloid to press? Several reasons. First of all, the pics weren’t taken by a member of the magazine’s staff, and the submitter wants to see more money before granting permission for publication. Second, the magazine has a reputation for taking the high road when it comes to salacious stories, and running one contrary to type would certainly fly in the face of tradition. It could also make other stars pause before granting interviews in the future. Finally, they know they would get sued. So now they are running the numbers. They need to figure out if the boost in sales and circulation – of what would likely be their best-selling issue in history – will offset the negatives.

Anonymous said...

Jake?

I know you’re looking where I’m looking
At his ass crack, right? Don’t lie. I know.

This is Jakey G. Taking his underwear off in a new promotional poster for Love & Other Drugs. To be honest, it’s a little, um, base for my preference. A questionable tactic in selling the film, because if the film is as strong as they say it is, I don’t, frankly, have to be enticed by Jake Gyllenhaal slipping off his boxers. It’s a little embarrassing, non? The kind of sh-t Kellan Lutz has to resort to?

Jake Gyllenhaal is NOT Kellan Lutz. Jake Gyllenhaal isn’t pathetic.

Nice to look at? Sure. OF COURSE.

But Jakey is so much more than an invitation to look at his ass crack. Which is where I’ve been looking. At the groove in between his legs trying to see the balls they’ve cleverly covered with shadow and light. Fun indeed but terribly unnecessary...

Or is it?

Love & Other Drugs was supposed to be good enough to factor in come awards season. Maybe they’re getting nervous. Maybe it’s not holding up. Maybe they think they have to sell it to horny housewives with a teaser shot of Jakey’s business.

But I was sold already on the trailer, and especially the second trailer. And all the flirty, player, lover, loving, tearful faces he makes in only two and a half minutes. So much better than this cheesy Playgirl poster. Hate it this cheesy Playgirl poster.

Funny how everyone thinks that photo-shopped photo is really part of the LAOD promo. It is getting more attention than the real photo. Lainey's comments are appropriate though, even for the real photo. If the film is so good, why are they selling the nakedness angle so heavily.

Anonymous said...

Fake poster makes you look and wonder what's going on. Real poster and trailers make LAOD look like just another romcom - predictable and uninteresting.

Anonymous said...

Jake got nothing but sh*t from some of you about promoting his torso for PoP, and now some like the cheesy fake poster? Which is it? If nothing else, PoP showed that that photo in no way is Jake's torso!

If the film is so good, why are they selling the nakedness angle so heavily.

I don't think the movie's that good or else it'd have been at one of the film festivals. Doesn't matter to me, it'll be plenty of almost naked Jake in it. I'll see it for sure. I even watched PoP and enjoyed all the Jake yumminess. The film wasn't that bad either.

Expect more promotion of the nudity, sex, raunchiness, etc., especially now that they've seen how much attention that shopped pic is getting, lol. And why not? It's certainly going to get people talking more than "beautiful girl is sick and the hot player guy finally finds the true meaning of love."
