A Place in the Sun

Montgomery Clift

during shooting of 'Red River', circa 1948

The Advocate: There are so many biographies of Montgomery Clift and numerous websites devoted to him. What was the biggest surprise you learned about him while researching your book?
Amy Lawrence: I was most impressed by Clift’s canny understanding of his own image. Many biographers depict him as refusing to participate in the Hollywood star system, but that didn’t mean he was ignorant of it. He understood how an actor’s image was built and maintained. In giving interviews or choosing roles, he knew exactly how to shape a performance to achieve the effect he wanted — and to resist the efforts of others to simplify a character. For instance, he was aware that screenwriters and directors often wanted to make the hero perfect; Clift wanted to make the character human, complicated, and not always admirable.

Q: Clift is often spoken of in context as a “gay actor” or in conjunction with Marlon Brando and James Dean. What do you see as Clift’s singular legacy?
A: Brando and Dean both thought of Clift as singular. Brando saw Clift as his only major competition, and Dean saw him as a model, an ideal to emulate. Unlike those performers, Clift’s best work has not become dated. In Red River, From Here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun, I Confess, and half a dozen others, his performances are impeccable. At his best he is never mannered or predictable. His performances are subtle, intelligent, graceful, and deeply empathetic regardless of the character’s flaws.

Q: How did Clift’s being gay — or bisexual, as some suggest — when it was still taboo affect his drinking, drug taking, and ultimate downward spiral?
A: The homophobia of the time, which intensified nationally just as Clift’s career was beginning in the late 1940s and early ’50s, certainly exerted pressure on Clift. A serious relationship with choreographer Jerome Robbins in the ’40s threatened both their careers when Robbins was blackmailed into testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee hearings regarding communists and other “subversives” in Washington and the entertainment community. I would be hesitant, though, to cast Clift as a “sad young man,” “self-loathing homosexual,” or fit him into any other category into which gay men were sorted from the 1950s to ’70s. Alcoholism affects everyone, and in the postwar period heavy drinking was routine across the board. By the time Clift’s drinking became full-blown alcoholism, it was impossible to disentangle from his devastating car accident, the prescription painkillers he needed at the time, and his professional fear regarding the damage done to his face. In the latter part of his career, his drinking and drug taking were so dominant in his life that he couldn’t function without them. Paradoxically, at the point when he worked with unsupportive or openly hostile homophobic producers and directors, the drugs and drinking sustained him as much as they destroyed him.

Q: You write about the fan magazines of the 1950s that frequently used sexually suggestive headlines such as “Who Is Monty Kidding?” How well known was the truth about Clift’s sexuality during that era?
A: Clift worked in a period when fan magazines were challenged by scandal magazines, each promising “the truth” about stars’ private lives. Ironically, even the scandal rags did not want any “truth” firmly established because that would rob them of the chance to repeatedly tantalize readers with the next promised exposé. Biographical information suggests that people who worked with Clift always “knew” in exact proportion to what they wanted to know. Fans likewise. Everyone minimized the complexity of Clift’s emotional relationships — with men, older women, young women — in order to maintain the image of the actor that appealed to them most.

Q: A recent article in Newsweek suggests audiences can’t accept gay actors as romantic leading men when we know the truth about their real-life sexuality and uses Rock Hudson as an example. How do you think this applies to Clift, who had such intense chemistry on-screen with Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses?
A: When audiences think they know something about an actor’s personal sexuality it becomes available as a touchstone to spectators watching a performance but is never mandatory. People judging a performance often appreciate it most the more it varies from what we think we know about the performer — casting against type, nice people playing psychos, beautiful actresses playing ugly. If we think of Clift as an actor, then his persuasiveness as a romantic lead opposite Taylor, Olivia de Havilland, or Jennifer Jones increases our appreciation of his skill as he seems to become inseparable from the role.

Another issue is history itself. As new generations are introduced to Clift and Hudson, they often react to the performers without knowing any biographical information about them. They are also less invested in “the truth” than those who experienced a change in their perception through revelations and the exposure of secrets. The freer sexuality of Brando or Dean, for instance, has not come to dominate their images.

Q: How do you think Clift would have fared personally and professionally if he began his career today, with the intrusion of the Internet and paparazzi?
A: The intrusion of the media today is offset by the openness of some gay performers — though not romantic leading men just yet. As Tom Cruise’s career shows, it is possible to withstand rumors and media speculation if you have the power and the will to do so. Because Clift was never as closeted as Rock Hudson, I don’t believe he would fight terribly hard to maintain the illusion of offscreen heterosexuality. He might be more likely to take a Keanu Reeves approach, where the actor neither courts nor tries to dispel the fantasies of any fan. In several roles in the severely repressive 1950s he even courted audiences to read his characters — and maybe himself — as gay in the casually flirtatious scenes in Red River, the rejection of heterosexual relationships in I Confess, Suddenly, Last Summer, and Freud, the material on gay Army life that acts as a subtext throughout From Here to Eternity, and the relationship with Frank Sinatra’s character in the film.

When the film is screening at AFI we will get a reliable impression from serious critics and audience. In this case the audience is more important - Jake needs a hit!

Bitch-Back! How Angelic Is Anne Hathaway?

Today 5:18 AM PDT by Ted Casablanca

Dear Ted:
I was reading your post about Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie with Anne Hathaway, and it got me thinking. Does Anne have a Vice? She seems like such a good person. Or am I just a fool?
—MN

Dear Hell Hath No Vice:
Besides acting chops so good they should be criminal, nope! The babe is clean as a whistle—well, maybe I wouldn't go that far, but she hasn't earned a spot in the Vice vault just yet. Anne is the type to let all her sexy naughtiness out on the big screen, which I guess is good for us too?

Dear Ted:
You haven't talked about Jackie Bouffant in a while. I've always wondered, is he faithful to his beard, or does he go out and sow wild oats?
—Carter

Dear Stepping Out:
He's as faithful to his beard as any closeted Hollywood stud. He makes sure he's never accused of sneaking around with another lady as to make things appear to be all happy on the home front (which of course benefits them both).

Dear Ted:
Would you ever do a B.V. for a celebrity who was under 18, especially if their Vice was of a sexual nature? Or do they need to be legal to earn a moniker? Not a perv—just trying to figure out the timeline for a particular B.V.
—X

Dear Illegal Tender:
That's especially why I would have to Vice it. Nothing gets lawyers riled up like underage celebs doing the dirty.

Dear Ted:
I've recently found your site and am loving Blind Vices. Could you tell me if Chad Michael Murray has ever been a B.V. subject? I never forgave him for what he did to Sophia Bush, and I wouldn't be surprised if the story became the subject of one of your columns. Possibly costarring Sophia?
—Lisa Marie

Dear Over the One Tree Hill:
Miss Bush—despite multiple moments where should could be monikered—doesn't have a Vice. If that clears anything up for you.

Dear Ted:
Now you need to put up a link of the Blind Vice Archives under Ted's Top Topics. Keep them all together. Can you do Judas Jack-Off soon? Thanks.
—Angela

Dear JJOverload:
Fine! We've got a different all-star Vicer of the down-low variety coming tomorrow (his name rhymes with Motch Muh-Mastic), but I'll give you Judas maniacs an archive soon enough.

Dear Ted:
I can't believe that Chelsea Handler is really hooking up with 50cents. What is your take on it, just a fling fueled maybe by too much liquid?
—Bebe

Dear Gay Mafia:
Chels has mucho gay amigos, so let's hope she teaches "50cents" a thing or two about tweeting tolerance. I personally think he's way too much of a douche for our girl Chelsea no matter how much booze she drinks.

Interesting about cabs:

Dear Ted:
After Rob and Kristen's dinner at Ago, you said they left in a cab. How do they keep their super secret new residence private if they are taking a cab home? I'm sure cab drivers don't have to sign confidentiality agreements. Or is the cab just the first in a series of stealth maneuvers to try to lose the paparazzi?
—W

Dear Taxi Cab Confessions:
Never said which place they left for, W, but even if they went to the Robsten love nest, you can rest assured that the cab driver would keep his address-blabbing lips zipped, lest he face Team Robsten. And the cab went straight underground to the ultraprivate Soho House.

I'm surprised Kate didn't delete this from WDW boards--it's another LAOD review from a Jake fangurl:

I saw Love and Other Drugs last night at a screening. Sigh, I hope they make a lot of changes before this is released in theaters. Let me put it like this, Hank Azaria is best in show. He plays a sleazy, yet very cool and funny big-shot doctor and is just an enjoyable delight the entire film. The guy who plays Jake's character's brother also has some hilarious moments.

The film itself is all over the place. It doesn't know if it wants to be comedic or dramatic so it tries to be both simultaneously and doesn't do either very well. There is a part in the movie that was so heavy handed I rolled my eyes until they almost fell out of my head (it's a scene with a man that Jake's character interacts with at a meeting).

Jake and Anne have great chemistry and he is very charming in this, but the nudity is borderline gratuitious and really adds nothing. In fact, I think it's going to prevent people from seeing this film as there were two older ladies in front of me and one said "this is too much" after the upteenth sex scene.

The storyline is clumsily done and the end is so pedestrian and formulaic.

I saw Blue Valentine earlier this year and I can not begin to tell you how much better that film is than this one. I was really disappointed and don't see any awards potential for this movie.

The LES is a short train ride to Brooklyn. However, the No. 3 train runs on the West Side of New York and is a bit of a haul from the LES, and it wouldn't make sense to head to that train from the LES to go to Brooklyn.

It probably will receive mixed reviews. I still think it's going to do well at the b.o. The sex and nudity may very well be gratuitous, but older audiences that might be bothered are not target audiences anyway. And all the buzz about the sex and nudity will probably bring people to the theater.

idk, but it's getting people talking, creating some kind of buzz. I'll bet there are people who will now go to see the movie just to see for themselves how much sex and nudity there is, lol.

Anonymous said...

But this is negative buzz - so far only Dave Carger liked sex scenes. Can't imagine anyone going to see LAOD to watch some vanilla sex.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, who are you calling older audiences? Over 25? Over 30? Over 40? You do realize that people over 40 have more disposable income than those under 25, no? I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss the "older" audience--the Baby Boomers (of which Obama is a member) is a very large and vocal force. And judging by what they did during the countercultural movement in the 60s, are no strangers to sex and nudity themselves.

Honestly, the sexiest movie I have ever seen in recent years was Ang Lee's "Lust Caution." The sex scenes in that movie were SOOOO HOT (I don't think the sex positions are even listed in the Kama Sutra) that the movie got a NC-17 rating. It was a beautiful story but the rating kept people away.

Anonymous said...

10:22 am, I agree with you. And I think in any other year where there's usually weak Best Actress competition for the Oscar, Hathaway might be a contender but not this year. There are A LOT of great performances/great roles for women in mainstream films and Hathaway might get edged out because of this. (It's easier getting nominated when you give a great performance in a great film instead of a great performance in a not so great film).

Personally, I think Bening is going to get the Oscar--both for The Kids are All Right and her unsung BRILLIANT work in Mother and Child.

It's not going to be a huge hit. Bear in mind it's coming out during the beginning of the holiday season where lots of folks are with their families and they want to take them to the movies. Obviously, they're not going to take them to see that movie (unlike Harry Potter, which is coming out around the same time and is sure to be a blockbuster). Plus, "The King's Speech," a MUCH HERALDED Oscar frontrunner is coming out at the same time and it looks like that film (based on buzz) has serious contention for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, etc.--I think that might get some traction. But Harry Potter is going to pulverize them all...

Anonymous said...

In real relationships you don't need to swing from the chandeliers all the time either, if so, something's amiss. You're all here today because people before you were getting busy.

Dave Karger also really liked "Blue Valentine" and there's a lot of nudity/sex in that one too.

You watch too many movies. Real life is not quite like that ;)

Anonymous said...

Not true. ;)

Anonymous said...

The first half of the movie is uninteresting. ... The only reason why this whole setup is considered unique is because of the pharmaceutical backdrop. Oh, and also because Gyllenhaal and Hathaway are naked for most of the first half of the film. The nudity was gratuitous; and gay or straight, you do get tired of looking at Hathaway’s boobs.

They should cut out sex and nudity scenes and keep them to minimum.

^^I didn't post that, movies are of course dramatic, but they do have a basis in the real. I wasn't the poster, but since you asked, I base my opinion on my own personal experience and the knowledge that we aren't all that different from each other. I don't think movies teach that. Sex is one part of life and movies reflect it. It's not always glamorous either and without troubles.

1:48, I agree. Look at BBM. There wasn't a great deal of sex/nudity in that movie but yet it's a stunningly beautiful (and tragic) love story.

Less is definitely more. When I see movies that have an inordinate amount of sex/nudity--I usually wonder if that has been incorporated at the last minute to compensate for weaknesses in the script? Or if the director think that if the actress disrobes constantly throughout the movie, that might be a draw as opposed to the story itself. It's like they don't have enough faith in the story itself to draw people in so they rely on cheap gimmicks.

Anonymous said...

P.S. One or two sex scenes are more than enough for this type of movie.

I would think so. Have to admit I'm curious as to how much sex is in this movie - with people throwing stuff around like 'umpteenth time' and 'naked for half the movie.' you generally don't hear that, it's usually talk about one main love/sex scene that leaves an impact.

BBM was a once in a life time sort thing, that much is certain. Everything came together perfectly and, although I wouldn't have minded a little more affection between Jack and Ennis towards the end of the movie, the love scenes were some of the most poignant and honest ever captured on celluloid IMO.

Goes to show that raw emotion does a lot more for a love story than nudity and graphic sex.

I don't think anyone is saying this, and no one has to. Or that's what all movies have to say about it. But there are enough people in the world who do to make it real enough, not just fabricated for entertainment purposes. Or maybe it was just one relationship that someone had that was off the charts sexually. All that is enough to call it real. We'll have to see how the movie actually is. I don't mind sex and nudity if the story calls for it. As someone said above, Ang Lee's Lust Caution was explicit, so he does bring more if the story calls for it.

She is actually a beard for her brother, who is really the one in the relationship with the boyfriend. It’s actually rather sweet. The actress and boyfriend genuinely enjoy eachother’s company, the brother and boyfriend get to spend a lot of time together, and everyone in the family is in on the secret and is happy with the relationship. The situation seems to be benefiting everyone for now.

Part 2: Jake Gyllenhaal on "Zodiac", "Donnie Darko" and "Brokeback"

Talking about Donnie Darko, Zodiac and Brokeback Mountain -- by most estimations the high points of his career -- made him extra reflective. If this past weekend's event was any indication he understands as well as anyone that these are the key titles.
...

When he tried to talk about the reunion scene, he had difficulty.

"It was about more than just kissing. The scene in Brokeback Mountain where Heath and I see each other after a very long time. This has been hard for me to explain for years. We had very little to do with that scene being as powerful as it is. It was powerful when you read it in the screenplay. It was powerful in the short story on the page. What we do when we had that moment together is filled with -- it's filled with moments that people have had that have nothing to do with us. We just basically went up and slammed our mouths together. You know what I mean? We were the instruments for something that was much bigger than both of us."

Do you know what he means? He did ask.

David Denby, the critic interviewing him, reiterated that the film still "plays beautifully" now years later, calling it "flawless." They showed the famous 'quit you' scene and Jake told a funny story about how early on in the movie rehearsals the crew made fun of him trying to act "old" -- most of the crew was in their 40s, the age Jake was playing, and he was holding his back like it was hurting and moving slowly and such and the crew was like "We're not 80, we're 40!". But then he got serious... the movie is clearly special to him, and brought back memories.

"We rehearsed it before we shot the movie and it was still winter and there was snow everywhere. There was Ang and the location scouts. We drove out and Ang played us the music he was going to have in the movie. I had my dog with us. He was jumping around in the snow. It was no different when we shot. It was already right there."

Denby asked him if he had any regrets about his performance.

"I think I do have regrets about it, about things, as every actor does. When i see Heath's work in that movie it's just transcendent and amazing and as a fellow actor to me I just always admire him. I hoped that I could be as good as. So I watch it and I always see that."

Anonymous said...

the movie is clearly special to him

I believe that. How could it not be? Some actors go through their entire careers and never get to be in a movie that is such a masterpiece.

Anonymous said...

And what are the regrets he has?

BT said...

You're all here today because people before you were getting busy.

Anderson Cooper and his network, like much of the mainstream media, have been responsibly covering the gay teen suicide epidemic for days now. The Coop is even hosting a special town hall special on Friday about the problem. But as Anderson interviews other celebrities and bullying victims, all I can wonder is: How come Anderson isn't telling us his personal story?

Anderson isn't out publicly, and he'll tell friends he made that decision so he can objectively report on LGBT issues without publicly having a foot in the debate — as if being white or wealthy or a silver fox prevents him from objectively reporting on anyone with those traits. But as we've seen recently, when it comes to children facing pain and thoughts of killing themselves, the time is right to speak out with your personal story.

Don Lemon, in discussing the Eddie Long scandal, revealed he's a child molestation victim. Tim Gunn, in talking about the torment young queer youth face, revealed he attempted suicide. Lance Bass even fessed up to being a former bully himself.

This is not about a journalist inserting himself into the story, or becoming the news. It's about a journalist using his best tool: first-person experience. Every LGBT person alive has confronted, at least once, some for of discrimination or harassment or feeling of otherness. Being one himself, Anderson unarguably knows what it's like to feel attacked.

And yet, as he sits here interviewing non-dancing partner Ellen DeGeneres — who says she, at 51, only started feeling comfortable in her own skin in the past 10 years — about how she was tormented as a kid and as an adult in her professional life, we have Anderson keeping mum about what it was like for him growing up gay. FOX 9 Minneapolis's Jason Matheson set an example by lending a responsible voice to child bullying. Anderson should follow suit.

the torment young queer youth face

It's weird this is happening. When I went to high school being gay or bisexual was the hot thing. I don't know if we were ahead of our time, if it was our area (Southern California) or LOL if we were just a sex-fueled high school. Our varsity basketball captain/star was gay. I didn't find out until later that he was dating a cheerleader's 40 year old uncle, and the whole family knew but kept it quiet. (LOL and WTF?!) He went to the dances and proms with the cheerleader or her sister. I always wondered why he never went with a bf. Now I know! Also a few varsity football players were bi and two were gay..one was a femme/A&F model-type, (when he walked down the hall he absolutely glowed) anyway they were all good students and good football players (we won some CIF championships) so the gay didn't matter. There were also quite a few regular-student bi/gays and gay teachers. (There was even a straight male psych teacher who was secretly dating a female senior but he never got caught or got in trouble.) Overall there wasn't any bullying or making fun of gays that I recall.

Honestly I think the gay/bi wasn't an issue because we won sports. Blacks were accepted in true-story sports movies "Remember the Titans" and Glory Road" because they were winning games. Would they have been accepted if it was otherwise? Would the gays in my high school face bullying if they hadn't been in sports? I don't know if having to bring sports into the picture as an equalizer is good or bad but it seems like it works.

Anderson Cooper Slams Vince Vaughn's Use Of 'That's So Gay'

Anderson Cooper has spoken out against Vince Vaughn’s pejorative use of “that’s so gay” the trailer for his new film, The Dilemma.

In the film, Vince plays a man who learns that his best friend’s wife is having an affair.

“I was sitting in a movie theater over the weekend and there was a preview of [Vince Vaughn's new] movie, and in it, the actor said, ‘that’s so gay,’ and I was shocked that not only that they put it in the movie, but that they thought that it was okay to put that in a preview for the movie to get people to go and see it,” Anderson said (watch at about 5:45 in the video).

“I just find those words, those terms - we’ve got to do something to make those words unacceptable ’cause those words are hurting kids,” he added.

“Someone else I talked to recently said that the words people use and the things people say about other kids online, it enters into their internal dialogue. When you’re a kid, it can change the way you see yourself and the way you think about yourself - the worth that you give to yourself. I think we really need to focus on what language we’re using and how we’re treating these kids.”

I think it means that both Jake and whomever he was with refused to be photographed. Take out the phrase between the commas which is just there for description: "Jake Gyllenhaal and his date refused to be photographed leaving the ballet." Last Night's Parties: Why Was Jake Gyllenhaal So Shady At The New York City Ballet?

Ah, the New York City Ballet gala, one of the most anticipated arts events of the year. The usual suspects were there: SJP, Natalie Portman, Fe Fendi...Jake Gyllenhaal? Strange things happening in New York last night...

Where: Lincoln Center

Who Was There: Natalie Portman (looking, for the first time ever perhaps, kind of a mess), Candace Bushnell, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Settle, Fe Fendi, Francesco Clemente, Jake Gyllenhaal

Other Details: Sarah Jessica Parker has been a longtime supporter of the New York City Ballet, and has gone to their events in the past. This year she was elected board member. She showed up in Halston. Natalie Portman was there with her super-hot choreographer boyfriend, Benjamin Millepied. Jake Gyllenhaal was there too, weirdly, briefly, and with a backpack. He refused to take pictures, and his presence was surprising to everyone--we know he's friendly with Natalie, so maybe something to do with her? But, really, the most important question: what was he doing with a backpack at a black tie gala?

Anonymous said...

No pics since June?

I think they're done. But there was no announcement, so maybe he's working on something or they are pulling a "Ross & Rachel" and are on a break? Who knows?

NC-17 said...

Some interesting comments to this article.

MPAA Gives Ryan Gosling-Michelle Williams Drama 'Blue Valentine' NC-17

EXCLUSIVE: In a surprising development, the MPAA ratings board has slapped an NC-17 rating on Blue Valentine, the Derek Cianfrance-directed drama that is creating Oscar buzz for the performances of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Willams. The film, about the slow corrosion of the relationship between a young couple, was acquired by The Weinstein Company after its premiere at the last Sundance Film Festival. The film also played at Cannes and Toronto.

Now, I've watched Harvey Weinstein use the ratings controversy for maximum promotional mileage on past movies that otherwise might have gotten ignored, but I saw Blue Valentine when it premiered in Park City. It is a powerful, worthy film, and the NC-17 is an absolute head-scratcher. I'm told the rating was given for a scene in which the characters played by Gosling and Williams try to save their crumbling marriage by spending a night away in a hotel. They get drunk and their problems intensify when he wants to have sex and she doesn't, but will to get him off her back. That hurts his pride and the result is an upsetting scene that makes you squirm, but is an honest one that establishes clearly that this couple has nothing left and isn't going to make it because love has turned into contempt. There is barely any nudity in the scene, as I recall (though I haven't seen it since last January) and there is no violence. It was hardly a moment that would make you think, well here comes an NC-17.

It wasn't immediately clear what TWC and the filmmakers will do. Certainly the notoriety will help get the film attention, but it seems clear that if they fail in the appeals process, they will have to cut the film to get an R rating, if the picture is to have a shot at broadening beyond a very small release. There are likely complications in running an NC-17 film through TWC's ancillary deals. This is the third Oscar season film on which TWC has butted heads with the MPAA. Weintstein lost a challenge appealing the R rating given The Tillman Story, and he has virtually no chance to overturn the R rating given The King's Speech. The latter film, which many feel will be a strong contender for Best Picture and other awards, lost its chance at the PG-13 because of a scene in which speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) helps King George VI (Colin Firth) overcome his stammer by peppering his speech with curse words. He says "fuck" about 42 times in a short amusing sequence. Everybody knows there is a three "fucks" before the R is given, and Firth blows past that in a single line. Director Tom Hooper told Deadline recently that he won't change a frame, but is perplexed that a scene that falls within the context of the film gets an R while a PG-13 is given to Salt despite Angelina Jolie getting waterboarded, and Casino Royale even though Daniel Craig has his testicles pummeled in a rather graphic scene. Hooper felt that the MPAA doesn't consider context when it comes to curse words.

The Blue Valentine preliminary rating is bound to raise similar questions. It doesn't get the R granted a movie like The Human Centipede (First Sequence), a graphic depiction of a mad surgeon's campaign to kidnap victims and surgically link their digestive tracts to create a human centipede?

It was too early to roust the filmmakers, TWC and the MPAA for comment, but I'll update when I do.

The problem is that Focus is owned by Universal, which is one of the big six studios (Disney, Fox, Sony, Paramount, and Warner Bros. being the others) that belong to the Motion Picture Association of America. As such, they can't release films without a rating. If you're an MPAA member, you gotta use the MPAA's rating system. It's one of the drawbacks of being in the MPAA. I'm sure the benefits outweigh it, although off the top of my head I can't come up with what those benefits might be.

If BV belongs to one of the six studios, it can not get rid of a rating.

On the other hand, consider something else about NC-17 films: most of them aren't very good. When the highest-grossing film in a particular category is Showgirls, you can bet you are not dealing with the finest that cinema has to offer. Box Office Mojo's list of top NC-17 films has a few worthy titles, but mostly it's mediocre fare like John Waters' A Dirty Shame. Lots of wieners, but very few winners.

BV looks like a winner.

Anonymous said...

"BV looks like a winner."

For the critics - but definitly not for the Box Office and not for the Oscars.

Given the release date and the fact that the film is depressing and has not a happy ending I don´t see any appeal for a wider audience.

Anonymous said...

BlueV. is produced by the same Weinstein who pushed bags of gifts to people to obtain Gwyneth and SiL Oscars? From what I understood, HW was smth against Weinsteins and on good reasons.

Anonymous said...

HW was smth against Weinsteins and on good reasons."

I don't understand this statement at all.

Now there are two options available to BV if Harvey wants to go for an R rating: He can appeal; or he can ask the director to edit the film for an R rating.

BTW, one of the movie bloggers believes that what the MPAA board found to be NC-17ish is the scene in a hotel where Ryan Gosling goes down on Michelle Williams and makes her orgasm.

That scene alone makes me want to RUN to see that movie once it's out.

"the fact that the film is depressing and has not a happy ending I don´t see any appeal for a wider audience" That's what I thought about Brokeback Mountain and the, the public loved it and it was one of the most important movies at Oscar night, no matter if it didn't get the best movie award.

What i've seen and heard of BV sounds like it is another pretentious, false indie, mediocre "artistic" wannabe piece of dull crap. But this is the kind of movie most people like to say they liked, so I bet is going to have a descent release at least in the USA. Michelle is an ok actress, a little bit repetitive but she can be very moving in the right scenes, I can't stand Gosling's face, voice and acting but people seem to adore him! oh, well....the mysteries of life

No, because she has not the charisma, the vibes and the vulnerability of Marilyn.

Agreed with 6.19 - she looks like a wax figure.

But it's better to wait and see MWWM until we pass judgement.

LOL. Then shut up about every movie or casting choice from now on until you see the finished product. And while you're at it, get off the internet.

Tastes are different. I like that Ryan seems comfortable in his skin, on and off screen. I like the authenticity in his acting.
He may not be good looking in the classic way, but he has a certain something.

Michelle is just playing Marilyn, it's called acting and believe it or not, actors can pretend to be someone else.

the scene in a hotel where Ryan Gosling goes down on Michelle Williams and makes her orgasm.

Maybe the scene was done in the lobby.
