Happiness is a Choice

Advocate cover - Portia de Rossi
Portia de Rossi knew her "quiet life" was over when she fell for Ellen DeGeneres. Now, with a new book and a passionate taste for politics, she’s ready to step forward as the first lady of our fight for marriage equality.

She has that least likely of all Hollywood endings — a marriage everyone believes is the real deal. "It’s one thing to have attention; it’s one thing to stand for something," she says. "But unless it’s backed up with genuine happiness, I think people can sense that it’s not worth celebrating."

Whenever anyone asks De Rossi about marriage equality — and, grateful for whatever "little tiny platform" she’s given, she hopes they will — she reveals herself to be an impeccably prepared spokeswoman, a perfectly poised first lady of advocacy. Further proof will come in March when the Human Rights Campaign will acknowledge De Rossi with its Visibility Award at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

A year and a half after their 2008 wedding, she and DeGeneres are still that almost obnoxiously adorable couple. If anything, getting married has only made them more so. Even the paparazzi seem to buy into their love story, mostly leaving the two alone. "To think that a married gay couple is considered boring and normal is fantastic," she says. "Happiness is a choice too. It’s a choice to live in a state of gratitude and to fix what makes you unhappy. Being honest with who you are, being able to go out into the world and show people that you can be successful and be happy and be in a good marriage — it’s important."

She makes another straightforward "case closed" argument for actors coming out, usual Hollywood scare tactics be damned. "People say, 'There are lots of openly gay actors.' And I’m like, who? If everybody I knew that was gay and not being open about it came out, it would make a huge difference to people coming up as young actors in Hollywood. Huge. To producers, to people in casting. I’m sure that when I was with Ellen a lot of people wondered if I could play a straight role convincingly. By having the opportunity, other people can go, 'Oh, that’s OK. It didn’t kill that show. That was believable.'"

In comparison to her wife, at least, "I haven’t said 'I’m gay' that often," she says. Maybe that was true back when the idea of Portia as the femme fatale still cast such a long shadow over her public life.

This is what she has to say now: "Being on Oprah was a very surreal moment — to go from being so closeted and so afraid to talk about my sexuality to sitting with my wife, talking about my wedding and how much I love her. To look out at that audience and see most of the audience crying — Oprah was crying! Life can take so many twists and turns. You can’t ever count yourself out. Even if you’re really afraid at some point, you can’t think that there’s no room for you to grow and do something good with your life."

Stars describe their favourite film moment of the decade and there amongst them is a very hot (and sexily black and white) Jake Gyllenhaal describing his favourite as Peter Sarsgaard in An Education: 'Any performance by Peter Sarsgaard. God, I'm such a kiss ass! I would pick An Education. I don't know what he does for a living; he seems to be into cellos; likes really young women! That seems to be my best description...' Perfect!

I think that was Jake's way of not talking about his favourite film moment of the decade.

Ewan McGregor talks to OUT magazine about how much he enjoys nudity and pushing the limits of sexuality on screen...

McGregor also reveals that he shot two takes of a fellatio scene on Jim Carrey in the upcoming film I Love You Phillip Morris: "There were two alternatives. There was the spit, and there was a really nice slow swallow, where I look at him and just do a loud swallow. I really like that one, but I guess they went for the more obvious spit over the side.”

McGregor recently told the L.A. Times that he "quite liked kissing Jim Carrey" in the film.

He also recently dashed suggestions that it's not a gay movie:

"Y'know there was a lot of talk about it at Sundance about it not being a 'gay movie.' Well, I think it is a gay movie. Of course it's a gay movie. It's about two gay men or three gay men, y'know? And a man whose relationships are with men. And although the humor isn't born out of the fact it's about gay men, it's a funny movie. Y'know, I never wanted to be worried about the fact that it's a gay story because it is. I hope they locked it that way. You can imagine that the people who deal with such things going, 'Oh, let's make sure people don't think it's a gay movie and y'know that won't sell.' But of course it is, and it's a good film."

If You Wishful Think Hard Enough, It Just Might Come True.

Our friend Perez today illuminated some courtside subtext between Jake Gyllenhaal and his "Day After Tomorrow" co-star, Austin Nichols. We didn't realize they were friends, but we do remember meeting Nichols at the premiere of his most recent flick, "Glory Road." We stopped to talk to him because he was so tall and handsome, and for no other reason. He admitted to us that he was the only person in the movie who wasn't good at basketball.

"I lied and told them I was a basketball player," he giggled, as we swooned. "I am a terrible basketball player."

We then told him that if they ever made a movie about Tom Brady, he should play him in the lead role. This comment thereby exhausted all of our sports knowledge.

We eavesdropped as he chatted with someone else nearby, who asked him what his favorite recent movie was.

"Brokeback Mountain," he grinned. We gripped a nearby publicist for support. "I can’t think of any other love story that got me so..." and then he trailed off.

We'll end here because we don't want to jump to any conclusions. And also, because we don't want to have to clean out the inside of our jeans twice today.

Yes? Speak up, Austin!

Aroused maybe 6:03 PM? If so, many straight women and gay men had the same experience. There were hundreds of threads on imbd where women asked if it was normal they got aroused watching them make out. LOL.

"That got me so sad" would be my guess.

It’s perfectly normal to find two beautiful men snogging each other arousing. Duh!

Could be that's what he wanted to say. My mind is in the gutter too often. :D

I think Austin meant a love story that moved him so deeply. In his case, I think it's because it was very close to his own feelings.

The real Brokeback Mountain: Toothy Tile and Gray Goose

This is off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush. According to my favorite gossip columnist Ted Casablanca closeted gay boys abound in hollywood(Duh!). But, no one more interesting then Toothy Tile and his man Gray Goose, code names for the hot closeted young gay hollywood couple in the popular blind vice section of his column. There is no doubt in anyone's mind, since we being following this for the past few years, who they are:

Apparently this boys have being leaving a real life Brokeback Mountain for a awhile, but in this movie:

Jake Gyllenhaal is Ennis Del Mar
Austin Nichols as Jack Twist
Reese witherspoon as Alma
and Sophia Bush as Lureen Newsome

But the good thing is, that Jake has left his Alma lets see if Austin leaves the Bush, and we could have a Brokeback Moutain with a happy ending on our hands.

I was just watching that NYT Web segment about famous actors discussing their favorite performances of the decade. Jake comes off like such a superficial airhead next to some of the very intelligent, thoughtful observations made by the others--particularly the women. (I'm surprised no one mentioned Heath though--that is one of my favorite performances of the decade and yes, I agree with Julianne Moore, Sean Penn in Mystic River.).
I also like Michael Caine in Cider House Rules.

I think it was sweet Tobey mentions Leo in The Aviator but also mentions he's probably biased.

Anonymous said...

You know, Reese Witherspoon would be a fascinating Alma. I kid you not. I think she is potentially a VERY good actress but has become lazy by only doing romantic comedies because that's her speciality. I thought she was great in Walk the Line.

Anonymous said...

LOL, the chin would be terrible with a big T.

Anonymous said...

I think Sophia is perfectly describe as a Laureen type. She is now beautiful, fun and ambitious, but I can see her becoming bitter, frustrated and artificial after years of faking.

Anonymous said...

6:38 PM, Reese is a good actress. She did a great job in Pleasantville and Election. But Michelle is another league, I can't imagine anyone else playing Alma. Like the men, the women in the movie are irreplacable.

Vampire Weekend said...

What do Lil Jon, Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal, and RZA have in common? Well, aside from sharing the spotlight at the epicenter of music and film, they were all recruited to make cameo appearances in the new Vampire Weekend music video.
...
Q: So, performance footage is interwoven with the tennis match segments?

A: Yeah, the performance is both woven into the fabric of the match—the contest of the day—and there’s some stuff with them performing in a room just right off to the side. But it all takes place in a very white and pristine world so it doesn’t feel like there are disparate things going on. That’s what I like about it; it’s a very simple and clean video. I also like the sporting element and the cameos. Everything just fell into place. When bands put out records that are really resonating like this one, you’re able to call on people like RZA, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil Jon, and Joe Jonas. And they all wanted to be in the video. It’s usually tough to get people to come down and join in the chaos known as the music video, but it made it a lot of fun.

Q: Wow, I had no idea those guys were making cameos in this. That’s an impressive line-up!

A: Yeah, it was cool! The planets just aligned and everybody happened to be around. Most of our phone calls were successful and we were able to grab those guys for the video. I’ve been doing this for a long time and from my own experience, it’s a rarity.

Q: I’m assuming they were already fans of the band then?

A: I certainly can’t speak for everybody, but Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal were through connections of mine. I was making calls saying, “Hey, I want to get some people to come down and be in this video!” One of my friends was like, “Oh, I was just with Jake and he was listening to the new Vampire Weekend record.” The next thing you know, there he is. I don’t think he even knew what he was doing, but he absolutely slayed it and was a lot of fun to work with. He did a great job in the video and brought a lot to it, which was fantastic.

Q: What else is going on in this video?

A: We lit shit on fire. We had RZA presiding over the tennis match. Lil Jon came down to give some tennis tips. Jake Gyllenhaal drank himself out of the competition; Joe Jonas tried, but did not succeed. There was a lot of rigorous competition, pyrotechnics, and a little bit of milk to cap it all off.

8:43 how do explain her blase attitude with Jake and the pap taking pics straight at her? IMO it doesn't matter re the turning left; he could have been headed to the restroom while she stood in a corner and talked on the phone while she waited for him.

Anonymous said...

ITA the girl looks to blase. She strikes me as a PA who is walking along side and holding his coat. When he turns away, he could be going out to the car and the PA is probably going to baggage claim to get his bags.

Jeffrey Wright Joins Source Code said...

Moon writer/director Duncan Jones announced Wednesday on his Twitter account that Jeffrey Wright (Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale, "Angels in America") has joined Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan in his new sci-fi thriller Source Code at Summit Entertainment.

Gyllenhaal recently told ComingSoon.net exclusively that "'Source Code' is a kind of sci-fi thriller based in different time continuums. I play Colter Stevens and he's a helicopter pilot who finds himself in a very unlikely and disoriented situation."

According to previous reports, Stevens is part of an experimental government program to investigate a terrorist incident who finds himself in the body of an unknown commuter living and reliving a harrowing train bombing until he can find out who is responsible for it.

Farmiga will play a hands-on communications officer controlling Gyllenhaal as he travels through time and space. Monaghan is a woman on the train with whom the man is involved romantically.

Maybe he would have said Joker, or maybe he'd have chosen someone else or he really meant what he said about Peter? Maggie said Peter was her favourite actor, maybe Jake's too.
As for BBM, Jake mentioned a few times that Michelle gave the best performance. And Michelle is one of Maggie's favourite actresses as well.

People just got a glimpse of what he was going to do. He was so full of life. I don't think I'll ever get over that, nor will anybody who knew him. He was a miracle of a man. It's just horrible. It sucks." He starts to tear up, and gulps down some much-needed mineral water.

I bet if it was Jake who got the most praise for it, some wouldn't say that.

I'll never understand this need to measure the unmeasurable.

Who got the most praise - Humphrey Bogart or Ingrid Bergman?

Anonymous said...

I'll never understand this need to measure the unmeasurable.

Ask babblers and some posters here why they do that. They always had a problem with Heath being slightly favoured by critics. And you know that.

Anonymous said...

Heath was never liked by many Jake fans, even after he died. Like, he isn't as pretty, didn't have a single good performance prior to BBM (and only got good reviews because he surprised everyone), just hooked up with Michelle to escape the gay rumors, he run away from Jake and so on and so forth. I belong to Jake's fanbase, but damn some of his fans are sometimes off putting. And some poor delusional fans who thought he'd have mentioned one of Heath's performances as best moment of the decade is something Jake would never do.

Me neither. Heath's been dead over two years and certain babblers still can't get over their jealousy/resentment of the well-deserved praise he got for BBM (and TDK). They can't simply give him credit without comparing him to Jake and, of course, trying to insist that Jake was "better." Sad and pathetic.

Love Matt Damon. What a class act. Honest and sincere.

That it looks like Jake didn't want to share a small piece of information about Jake.

But it's just asking him what his favourite moment in a film in the last decade was. Most seemed to give their honest opinion. Perhaps, as mentioned, he didn't take this so seriouly and people are reading too much into it.

I'm glad it's going so well for Michelle at the moment. I'm crossing my fingers SI will be a b.o. hit and she'll receive an Oscar nod for BV. Good thing she improved her posture.

I'm sure the movie will be good, with a good director and cast. Leo always gives his best, I respect that and it's most of the time recognized. :)

Why does Heath need to be brought up if Jake fans don’t like him? You cry foul yet here you are mentioning him knowing full well how some feel about him and that a bashing could be on the horizon every time you do it. If you liked him for real, you’d let him rest in peace.

I don't know if I thought he'd have mentioned Heath - my first thought after listening to these comments was I thought it was interesting that noone mentioned Heath, with an Ocar-nominated performance and an Oscar-winning performance, not just Jake.

I don't think the roles can be compared - BBM, both the short story and the film, was about Ennis Del Mar primarily. Ennis was the one who was the most complex, had the most difficulty with expressing himself and with his relationship with Jack.

That doesn't mean that Jake's performance wasn't great - it was, obviously, with a BAFTA win and an Oscar nomination as well.

I loved Matt Damon's comment. :)

No doubt it was great. But I'm already tired of some of J's fans repeating again and again how Heath surprised everyone with the performance hence getting more praise. They sure never saw anything other than TTIHAY or KT prior to BBM. Heath was great in Monster's Ball, Brothers Grimm (although the film got bad reviews) or LODT. In LODT he completely transformed himself, his voice sounded like the voice of real Skip. And Joker was a complete transformation. He was really one of the best. His career would have been great if he didn't have this damn drug problem.

I don't want to beat a dead horse. Moving on now.

Always joking around is a defense mechanism. Jake has been doing that for years. Just watch some of the making of clips of his movies. Always clowning so he does not reveal his true self. He's been bearding all along, in his own way.

I think Jake's answer to that question is safe in that it doesn't offend anyone. Jake always seems to me like he wants to give the answer that will offend the least amount of people, and mentioning your brother-in-law is a way to do that. It doesn't matter if his real answer was Heath or someone else, I can see Jake thinking other people he is friends with, has worked with, or might work with in the future might feel slighted.

I do think however that Peter is a great, underappreciated actor.

11:38, that's a bullshit lame excuse. Look at all of the other actors who were interviewed for that NYT segment--Clooney, Harrelson, Moore, Saldana, etc. All of them came up with someone whose performance they greatly admired--and many were very eloquent about it. Jake comes off as an airhead by comparison. If Clooney, who's a joker, can be serious and thoughtful about this question (I liked his answer--Marion C was wonderful in La Vie in Rose), then Jake can't? He's a dope and very immature.

I agree with you on that. And even if Jake was biased, his reasoning for why he's singling out Peter in An Education was juvenile and not very funny. Now Tobey admitted he was biased in singling out bff Leo in The Aviator but his explanation was thoughtful, intelligent and articulate.

Dear Ted:
Does Nelly Fang have a beard? Does he go out on a date with girls?

Dear Bearded Bloodsucker:
All in-the-closet stars have lady friends to keep up appearances...at least the ones who don't want to be caught. Nelly's included here.

Dear Ted:
I'm totally stuck on this Nelly Fang biz. I tweeted you a question about it a few days ago and never got a response. I'm sure you get lots of tweets and can't respond to all of them. Or more likely, I was just ignored. No worries. My question is this: Can Nelly Fang only engage in his Griffith Park escapades while he's on hiatus, or does he do his vampire filming in L.A., too?

Dear Fang Fascination:
Nelly is such a hunk that he would have no problem getting a little down-low loving no matter where he's located. And he does.

I didn't say it was a good one, I just think that is the kind of person Jake is. Jake seems immature to me too, and at times I can't help thinking he thinks life is a popularity contest, and that the goal is to have as many people love you as possible, even if it means hiding everything about yourself. Or at least that is how he has struck me since being blinded by the gold ring, a/k/a getting on the A list.

Anonymous said...

I don't think he wants to please everyone. He doesn't strike me as that kind of person, perhaps even a tad egoistical. He does what he wants.

By complimenting Peter, Jake is trying to distract attention from BBM, the last film for which a gyllenhaal was nominated in the acting category. The last thing that post reeke Jake wants now is any discussion of brokeback. He'd also rather compliment Peter than have his press people release a photo if Jake hugging his slighly effeminate brother in law.
