Gay Celebrities Don’t Have To Come Out?

Celebrities like Michael Urie and Matt Bomer have been getting hammered recently for not being more vocal about their sexuality. Bomer, who was pictured kissing up on another man, defensively explained that he’s “completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life” and doesn’t give two shits that people think he’s gay. Urie, meanwhile, argued that he didn’t feel the need to declare his sexuality, a move that had this site’s owner saying Urie’s an “anti-activist,” because coming out’s “the most powerful and necessary action any LGBT person can make.” The Ugly Betty actor did, however, say that he’s dating a man, so he’s being criticized for not coming out enough. This debate makes me wonder: Should it be someone’s duty to declare his sexuality? We’re constantly coming out, so how often and when does it need to be done? Should people be required to come out and show the world a positive gay face?
...

Activism, like gay people, comes in many forms. Coming out counts as an example, yes, but not coming out isn’t harmful. It would be nice if Urie, who plays one of television’s most hilarious gay characters, could own up to it, rather than relying on the “it could hurt my career” excuse and insisting that just because he’s with a man now, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s “gay.” He’s queer. Fine, whatever. But Urie’s parsing and Bomer’s avoidance both fit into a Hollywood model, their approaches are not necessarily harmful. They’re weak and lamentable, yes, but in the long run not calamitous. Staying in the closet only hurts when it’s coupled with harmful action, like anti-gay legislation, hence the moral relativism of outing a politician.

While the “coming out can hurt a career” argument has grown a bit dated in the wake of Neil Patrick Harris, it can be evoked, as in the queer case of Anderson Cooper. It’s no big secret that Cooper’s dating a man. Some people, however, insist he should take the next step out of the closet. Kathy Griffin recently argued against outing him because he goes to third world countries that aren’t always hospitable to the gays. That’s a valid point, yes, and one that I have made in the past. Whether or not it’s right remains open to debate. It does, however, bring up another, far more pressing question: does being gay have to come first?
...

There was a time when I definitely would have said that gay people, especially high-profile actors, should come out the closet. I still think that’s true: it’s always wonderful to have strong gay role models, like Neil Patrick Harris or Jane Lynch, and gay people today should constantly be aware of past and present struggles. And thank goodness the Proposition 8 and hate crime battles helped energize a new generation of activists. But as time goes on and I become a little older, though not necessarily wiser, I’m beginning to see that we all have to wear our sexuality in the way that suits us best. Being gay does not have to be the primary part of someone’s personality. In no way am I saying one should hide their gay ways – that’s just cowardly – and fighting for gay rights should be everyone’s concern, but there also comes a time when people need to focus on other parts of themselves, rather than the parts they use in bed.

Yes, actors and other celebrities have a responsibility to set a good example, and, in my opinion, should take advantage of their platform for progressive causes. But to say that celebrities have to come out forces them to make a decision they may not be comfortable with, and that isn’t fair. We may be disappointed that celebrities cop out and stay in the closet, but we should respect their decision, even if it means losing respect for the people themselves.

"Here is an article worth reading [Why Gay Celebrities Don’t Have To Come Out] even though I almost 100% disagree with it and I think the arguments used are ultimately unpersuasive or even (in the case of Brokeback Mountain) false.

The same author of that article writes gossip roundups for Gawker like this. I'm not criticizing that or his writing at all; in fact, what I've read I like. But if you're going to enthusiastically report on the personal lives of the famous ("It's hard keeping track of Jennifer Aniston's alleged love life. One day she's screwing Gerard Butler, the next it's secret meetings with Brad."), the only two excuses for not reporting on the personal lives of the gay famous would be (1) gay people deserve privacy more than others, and/or (2) gay is an especially dirty secret.

The positive aspect of the article? This stuff needs to be discussed. In a way, even debating it is a win for the type of universal visibility I favor.

Were there a pic of them playing, I would explode. For certain.

Peter, Maggie and Ramona seem a stable and lovely family. I think they'd be good people to hang out with.

I remember when Matilda was born, how everyone said how lucky she was Heath is her dad, Michelle her mom and Jake her godfather. But I found all three of them to be weird and was probably in the minority thinking "that poor kid".
I wish her the best.

If I "knew" a man for just a couple of months, I'd be very careful not getting pregnant. Esp. when I met him on a movie set where he plays a gay guy who falls for another gay guy, and who still wasn't over a recent break up (from Watts). While I do think she was interesting to him and he felt protective of her, he probably never planned anything long term.

She was either seriously dumb not to consider all that or she just blindly fell in love and couldn't see it. Or didn't want to...

And Jake is a hypocrite, the way he was looking at Michelle sometimes was pure annoyance, but he had the nerve to proclaim how honord he was Heath chose him as godfather and how he !!!loved Michelle and Matilda. LOL. And I totally think he liked Heath more than just a friend.

If you don't call this fucked up, idk what is.

I found very strange too that they break up so soon after BBM promo when "everything was so fine". If their bond was so strong why giving up without even trying?

I really think that during promotion they were the "straight normal image" of the movie, so maybe, the people attached to the film exaggerated a little bit the importance of their relationship. And also, there was the Oscar campaign too.Sad...but quite likely.

I believe that Heath & Jake awkwardness was more about professional jeaoulosy, something very common between actors but that is not an impediment to be good, caring friends once the award season is over.
I don't believe Jake dislike Michelle, i think he feels more indiference than other thing. Now that H is not longer in the world, he doesn't feel the need to keep in touch w/ M., but i really don't think he hates her or anything. Why would he?

I don't think it was jealousy. I think it was a mix of how they'll be perceived together by the public and maybe a little attraction too, mostly on Jake's side that made them act awkward with each other sometimes.

Though Witherspoon is a CAA client, a friend of Toth's says the evening was "a date" and not a business meeting, but that it was "nothing serious." The handsome agent is known as a ladies' man: "He's enjoying the single life," says his pal.

Question: Why do some posters on OMG think Jake moved to the Eastcoast? A few comments in the last month or so from some saying, he is on the West coast because it's cold or, etc. Did we miss something? When did he supposedly move?

reese and jake didn't break up. their contract ended. that's why they both look much happier than they ever did when they were on their reeke photo-ops.

Why do some posters on OMG think Jake moved to the Eastcoast?

They do? I must have missed that.

Anonymous said...

They don't come out and say it, but they implied that he may have moved there. Was it that eastciast loving letter from Ted? I just read a comment by PG and she said that Jake must be a snowbird because of the cold in the east after she commented on that twic posted by that L.A. fan. Odd comment but then I remember others commenting before, almost like they are surprised ir disappointed when he is spotted in L.A.

Why would they think that? I think the talk is done behind the scenes :e-mails, etc. But it's just bits and pieces I pick up from the regulars. If they actually believe that they must be confused with the stories about Maggie and family staying with Jake in L.A. although he could have homes in both places but there is no evedence that he bought a home on the East.

Also, if Jake wants to keep BT a secret, he wouldn't have his sister and her family stating with him around awards time, it would bring unwanted attention.

Which means there is no BT

I can only speak for myself. I think Jake has established himself on the eastcoast. One of the reasons being because Atticus went out there. And yeah, good memory. Ted did say something about eastcoast lovin'. Something else connecting him with Austin.

I call him a snowbird right now because he's on the west coast where the warm weather is while all the yucky cold stuff is going on the east coast. I'm just having some fun with him.

I think he, Austin & the gang must have a place somewhere on the east coast. Both guys seem to do an awful lot of flying back & forth between the two areas.

What on earth is wrong with the Midwest is beyond me. ;D We can be trendy, too! We have Starbucks. Whole Foods. No cupcake places, though. And no high dollar furniture stores except for Ethan Allen. No one hangs out in the Midwest.

Yeah, several of us regs do communicate alot via emails and I spend more time on the phone with a few than anything else. We about have to at this point. We can't say alot of what we want anymore online. Too many lurking eyes. Heck, we had alot of observations about Reeke but you sure couldn't say some of them online, not after a few of our comments came to fruition before our eyes. Not only lurking eyes, but we get bashed. Bashed on OMG and bashed on here. Who needs that.

And I myself believe there is a BT (possibly 2). I haven't stopped believing. Yeah, it's crazy. Yeah, it's hard most of the time to believe. But I do. Not afraid to say it anymore; I'll take all the ridicule anyone wants to dish on me; doesn't matter.

prairiegirl said...

And I'll tell you something else. After what happened on OMG last weekend when someone was greatly influenced into trying to influence us and squash all BT talk (and possibly even gay talk, I couldn't tell for sure), I'm darned if I'll shut up about it.

Talk about trying to lay on a guilt trip. There are psychological practices that go on sometimes and mind games; for some reason, Jake Gyllenhaal has this unbelievable power to stir up the passions in all of his fandoms.

There are pap pics of Jake and Atticus on IHJ of them in NY when he first got him. Jake has alaways traveled back and forth from Ny to L.A, for years, going back before Kiki, check out the pics on IHJ.

You can;t use those 2 reasons for him living on the Eastcoast. He probably had no one to watch Atticus :Zodiac/LAOD and doesn't always like to put the dog in a kennel.

I thinj he lives in Venice, CA.

Anonymous said...

I think Jake has established himself on the eastcoast.

Why would he do that?

prairiegirl said...

And it sounds like he does for the most part live there in CA. For sure clear up to the point when Reeke was in full throttle.

But there was something about when he took Atticus. Atticus has stayed behind in CA as far as I could tell all during Reeke. He's an old dog (sorry Atti, no offense. But in dog years and also for the size of dog he is? Large dogs do not live as long as smaller dogs) and to me, it seemed significant that he took Atticus east with him this time. Because since Reeke began, Atticus may as well have been kept in a carrier for as often as we ever got to see him with Jake. And to be fair, Jake was filming overseas alot. But he still came home for all those photo ops.

We'll see. I'm not going to melt down if he's in CA. I just think the Jaustin family has a place on the east coast somewhere.

And this is where we'll all get on separate train tracks which is fine. I just happen to believe that Jake & Austin are still together and since Austin films in NC, it makes things easier for them to all be over there.

And I think Montreal is on the east side of the U.S. (I'm not positive - my geography is terrible). But that will also make it easier for them all to be within short flight distance.

But, in some of her videos, like the one she did with Beyonce, she looked amazing,” said the British-born Carrigan.

Someone who certainly dresses for himself is American Idol star Adam Lambert. Carrigan’s opinion was that he’s metrosexual, or “hybrid” as he put it, and he actually sees Lambert as quite asexual.

Personally, I prefer my men to be more masculine and sexy. I love Jake Gyllenhaal; Carey Mulligan the new actress from An Education, I think she’s got a great style. Prada fashion model Nick Snider, named by Forbes in 2008 as the fifth most successful male fashion model, was busted Monday morning in Arkansas for DUI and then attempted to offer police officers a sex bribe.

The Smoking Gun reports:

"According to an Independence County Sheriff's Department report, when deputies approached the intoxicated Snider, he stated, 'I am a very famous model.' As Snider was being transported in a patrol car to the county jail, he 'kept trying to get me to stop the car and let him go,' reported Deputy Brian Luetschwager. 'Mr. Snider stated to me, 'If you stop I'll suck your dick and balls if you let me go.'' Snider...allegedly repeated the oral sex offer after arriving at the local lockup, where the model 'also harassed the booking Jailer with similar sexual comments.' After declining the barter deal, deputies lodged an additional charge against Snider, this one for illegally attempting to influence a public servant. He pleaded not guilty yesterday to the three misdemeanor counts during an appearance in Independence County District Court. Snider is free on $780 bond and is scheduled for a February 17 trial."

Snider is currently booked for New York's fashion week, which begins on February 11.

Gay men may have 'super uncle' evolutionary advantage: Researchers

"It's a question which has troubled science since Darwin: if homosexuality is, at least in part, inherited, how are those genes being passed down to new generations?

Canadian researchers say they have found the first evidence to back up the theory that gay men have the evolutionary advantage of being "super uncles", a way of enhancing the survival prospects of close relatives and — indirectly, at least — making it more likely their genes are passed on.

Paul Vasey, associate professor in the University of Lethbridge's department of psychology, said his research found evidence that gay men may be more willing to support their nieces and nephews financially and emotionally.

The idea is that homosexuals are helping their close relatives reproduce more successfully and at a higher rate by being helpful: babysitting more, tutoring their nieces and nephews in art and music, and helping out financially with things like medical care and education."

But a real Fa'afafin wouldn't ignore his godchild.

Actually it was Ted that first reported Kristen and Robert as a couple. Other gossips like Loathsome Lainey said that the romance wasn't real and months later those same gossip columnists including Lainey started reporting the romance daily.

So Ted was a rebel there as well. I think Ted has better sources.

If Ted had better sources, he would know that the relationship is fake and that Kristen Stewert is a bigtime dyke, Patterson i'm not too sure about.

Ted just realized that the fandom is massive and he can get a shitload of hits. Lainey just jumped in on it.

Even some Twilight fans know it's bs, but they are just too wrapped up in the shipping of them.

Word out of Sundance when Stewart was there promoting her film: she pinged so much she ponged!!!

DL has a thread on Ted and Twilight and how full of shit he is regarding him cherry picking fauxmances to critcize.

What other "mainstream" bloggers are yakking about them? Sure not MK from D-listed, I don't even think Perez goes on about them, Patterson solo yes but he doesn't pimp them but i may be wrong.

It's the mainstream rags like Peple, Us, Ok, that yak about them and that's where Ted and Lainey are locked step with the kneepad rags.

In a live interview that aired Feb 2 on Metro Morning, a Toronto CBC-radio program, Pamela Taylor was put on the hot seat, asked to name any openly gay Conservative MPs or Ontario MPPs. The trick is, none are openly gay. She named John Baird, a Conservative cabinet minister who has always refused to discuss his sexuality in the media.

Baird is a familiar face in gay social circles in Ottawa. He regularly chats up queer bureaucrats at Public Service Pride social events. He's a friend of gay former Ottawa city councillor Alex Munter. He's attended Ottawa's Pride parties, including the 2009 parade (see photo).

In the media, he's often portrayed as a workaholic bachelor and is the frequent (though non-sexual) date of Laureen Harper. Taylor is running in a Toronto-Centre provincial by-election to replace openly gay former deputy premier George Smitherman. That election is Feb 4.

Baird, 40, was first elected in 1995 as a provincial Progressive Conservative. In 1999, he became a cabinet minister under then-premier Mike Harris. Baird was responsible for the contentious welfare-to-work file during that time.

He was elected federally in 2006. As treasury board president that year, he stripped funding from the Court Challenges Program, a Chretien-era initiative that funded important gay legal battles, including the fight for gay marriage. He also "defanged" Status of Women Canada and cut funding for adult literacy and medical marijuana research.

However, Baird has never voted against gay marriage federally and was one of 10 Conservative MPs to vote against reopening the issue late in 2006. Last November, he spoke out against a violent, anti-gay bill making its way through the Ugandan legislature. At the time, he called it "abhorrent" and "offensive" and said that "it offends Canadian values."

Taylor's comments were part of a scuffle over the provincial Progressive Conservatives' record on gay issues.

ANDY BARRIE: Can you think of a single openly gay Conservative politician, either provincially or federally, who is gay?

TAYLOR: Openly gay? John Baird.

BARRIE: [Stunned] Thank you. You got me.

TAYLOR: And there are many others.

BARRIE: That was really dumb of me. To listen to the clip, go to the Metro Morning website and click on Toronto By-Election (it's about halfway through).

Representatives for Pam Taylor and John Baird have not returned our calls for comment.

No Man’s Land

Posted on 03 February 2010

I was turning left off Barham Boulevard the other evening from Warner Brother’s Studios where I had been preparing to direct The Mentalist for CBS. It had been a good day, a fun day – scouting locations, casting, going over the script. I was headed toward Hollywood, along Caheunga Boulevard West. It’s a strange road as you come through the pass from “the valley” into LA proper. On the right there is chaparral (scrub and rocks – generally bleak hillsides, but green from the recent heavy rains). Almost a wilderness, except near the top there are high-end modern and post-modern homes, looking out over the city. On the left is the Hollywood Freeway – a brutal mass of complex concrete with hurtling cars and trucks.

Caheunga Boulevard is a lot of concrete too – four curving lanes’ worth – and one can almost keep even with the freeway traffic, which makes the whole experience a bit dangerous. Street lamps zip by. There are no sidewalks. Pockets of litter swirl anxiously. Its a kind of a purgatory with hell emanating from the nasty freeway traffic to your left and heaven drifting down somewhere from up there in the hills. I was slowing for a traffic light that leads off to Mulholland Drive on the right. David Lynch made a movie, Mullholland Drive.

A bus was just in front, cars scattered around me, waiting for the light – rumbling – a slight shimmer of exhaust. It was just in front of the bus that I saw this man kiss another man, balanced on the cracked curb with only a dirt path behind him. Why did this kiss catch me – I’d seen plenty of men kiss each other before? The location was strange, sure, but that wasn’t it. The taller of the two was the one being kissed. The shorter man (a bit overweight) was also gently slipping a jacket over this taller man’s shoulders. The cars were edging forward now so my view was improving. Both men had shaved heads. Were they Buddhists? Were they gay? Their clothes seemed monkish, but maybe it was just that baggy fashion – hip, street-smart. It’s hard to remember. Actually the kisser – kissing the taller man on the face now again – then again – then again – seemed like a boy. Like a baby, even though he was probably thirty-five or forty. Too much affection for a man that age. Too much abandon. Was he retarded? Yes. No.

The cars were getting edgy. The shorter man adjusted the lapel of the taller man’s maroon jacket with the gentleness and affection of a coddling mother. It was just not right. Too intimate. Had the taller man been bare-chested before the jacket? Yes. No. Was my jarred imagination playing dirty tricks? They didn’t seem gay. The shorter one did seem retarded, though, or something, or…

The light turned. All the cars and bus quickly picked up speed as the shorter man clung to the maroon jacket, which I now saw had cowboy-like designs, stitched black and circular. This shorter man (growing smaller now) pulled the taller man’s head down to his chest so that he could kiss the top of the taller man’s shaved head over and over and over. The taller man, almost unperturbed, seemed suddenly like a big brother, but it was all too troubling and my rear view mirror was losing them. Awful. Creepy. Only now the skyline of Hollywood was rising up to greet me with its familiar buildings, billboards and neon. Off to my right was the overwhelming and comforting mall of Hollywood and Highland. A splash of lined-up brake lights turned everything red and glowing. All of it helped to pull me into the comforting, inhuman and predictable safety of concrete, steel and glass.

Dear I Love You, Man:
Pitt-Clooney may be a classic, but right now the hottest bromance is definitely Jackles. And I'm not just picking these two sexy studs because Danneel Harris will Twittack me if I say otherwise.

You think this bloodsucking stud is scared of little old me? He needs to exercise to keep his bangin' bod in shape, right? And what's better exercise than a little bit of running and a lot of in-the-forest humping.

—Lillian

Dear Sexy and Smart:
Firth's comments about it being risky to come are true, which totally sucks. But actors like Neil Patrick Harris are proving that someone can be out of the closet and play hetero just as well as all these "oh-so-brave" straight actors can play gay. Imagine.

'Damn Yankees' and 'Daddy's Home': More New Helmers Get Their Hollywood Shot said...

Not so long ago, Hollywood studios were reluctant to look beyond a list of 20 high-profile directors to helm the big blockbusters. And when those veterans were busy, the majors had to put projects on hold until the directors freed up. That was hardly practical, so the studios began looking outside the Top 20. Now more than ever, the moguls are taking a chance on names so low profile that the Industry has barely heard of them. Today, there are two more examples. I've learned that New Line president Toby Emmerich is setting Bandslam director Todd Graff to helm Damn Yankees, a big-scale musical that has Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey attached. And Paramount's Adam Goodman is giving screenwriter Etan Cohen the chance to make his feature directorial debut on Daddy’s Home, a comedy that will star Will Ferrell and Ed Helms.

So why would studios entrust their tentpoles to relative newcomers? Because of Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, X-Men's Bryan Singer and even Charlie's Angels' McG. All were instances of the majors taking a chance on emerging talent and enjoying big box office rewards because of it. McG, for instance, was plucked by Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal from the music video biz. Now she's gone obscure once again by tapping (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb to reboot her Spider-Man franchise.

Plus, there are perks. Not only can the studios pay these ingenue directors far less than the veterans who demand first-dollar gross. But the moguls can also exercise more control over the product and the talent. It can dictate what length or rating the film has to come in at, as well as take back final cut. In addition, the studio can often grab a future option on directors before they get hot. Besides, a lot of very experienced helmers have had more than their fair share of flops.

Nor do the directors necessarily have to be young. Todd Graff is 50, but Damn Yankees is the biggest directing assignment he's ever snagged. Graff entered the biz as an actor, part of The Electric Company troupe as well as films like Garry Marshall's The Flamingo Kid and James Cameron's The Abyss. But he also began his career as a Broadway stage thesp who received a Tony nomination for the musical Baby. Graff's debut as a film director was the musical Camp. And he also helmed 13, a Jason Robert Brown stage musical that played at LA's Mark Taper Forum. Still, big blockbuster musicals are hard to pull off, and Graff might seem a surprising choice given that his 2009 Bandslam grossed only $5.2 million. But that film received glowing reviews -- and one insider infamously complained to Nikki Finke (Behind The Scenes Of 'Bandslam' & Summit) that Summit mistakenly marketed it as High School Musical when the pic was much edgier. I'm told Graff will rewrite a first draft of Damn Yankees by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel for New Line's Hairspray-producing team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. What's planned is a contemporary version of the 1955 Tony-winning musical's story of a middle-aged fan who makes a Faustian bargain to sell his soul in order to become a slugger who’ll lead his hapless favorite team to the World Series. Though neither deal is set yet, Gyllenhaal is attached to play the slugger, Carrey to play the devil. There is also a plum role for a young actress to play Lola, the temptress sent by the devil to seduce the ballplayer.

Anne Hathaway left Catholicism after brother came out said...

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway has revealed her family became Episcopalians after her brother came out.

The Devil Wears Prada star grew up as a Catholic in New Jersey but when Hathaway's brother Michael told the family he was gay, they decided to leave their faith.

Hathaway told GQ magazine: "The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out. Why should I support an organisation that has a limited view of my beloved brother?" The actress said she was currently unsure about her own faith, saying: "So I'm… nothing [no denomination]. F**k it, I'm forming. I'm a work in progress."

She also discussed screen kisses in the interview, naming Angelina Jolie for having the best movie embraces. Hathaway said: "Full-on movie kissing … it’s a totally different experience. Movie Musicals Are Alive and Well: Gyllenhaal and Carrey’s Damn Yankees Moves Forward; Crowe and Beyonce for A Star Is Born?

Nine may have crapped out at the box office last year, but the movie musical isn’t dead by a long shot. There has been news this week that Russell Crowe may be the comically unlikely leading man to appear opposite Beyonce in a new version of A Star is Born, for one. (That may end up being a romantic drama with musical overtones, rather than a full-on musical.) And now a report says that New Line is tapping Bandslam director Todd Graf to oversee the new film version of Damn Yankees, which has long had Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal attached.
Deadline Hollywood talks about Damn Yankees, expressing some interest that Graf, who has never directed a big-budget film, has been tapped to direct. But he’s got stage experience (and a Tony nomination for his work in the musical Baby) and Bandslam was said to be a much better movie than Summit’s High School Musical knock-off marketing made it out to be.

If he can keep Gyllenhaal and Carey on board, this could be…interesting? Gyllenhaal would be the baseball fan who makes a deal with the devil to become a great ballplayer and lead his favorite team to the World Series, while Carrey would be the devil.

And then there’s the A Star is Born news, which sounds like an insane exercise in miscasting, but maybe I’ve just got Crowe’s rock effort 30 Odd Ft. of Grunts in mind. He’d be “an aging, alcoholic musician who mentors/is schooled by — and then finds romance with — a younger female star,” played by Beyonce. Nick Cassavetes has been in talks to direct, from a new script by Will Fetters. [LAT]

As far as commentary goes, I like film musicals, but can’t get excited about either of these projects. The musical is a really great way to tell a story, as big chunks of plot can be compressed into a five-minute song, and there’s always the potential for entertaining physical spectacle. Rather than continuing the endless cycle of going back to old stories (a musical tradition, to some extent) I’d be much more excited to see the musical pushed forward somehow. Not likely to happen, though, given the ratio of expense to risk when mounting one on a large scale. At least we’re not seeing the career of the other Damn Yankees immortalized on screen. Yet.
