In or Out?

KNOCK, KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? THE CLOSET. YOU'RE STILL AROUND? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!

There's been a great deal of discussion on the site [After Elton] over the past couple of weeks about gay celebrities, the closet and what constitutes being "out." And even though we've discussed the issue numerous times before, it seems like it is once again time to revisit the topic. And it's a subject that is as tricky as ever and that can have real consequences for the celebrities involved.

Perez kicked the latest round of debate off when he posted an item about White Collar's Matthew Bomer. Without citing a source or saying how he knew, Perez simply claimed Matt was an out gay man. If true, we were certainly interested in writing about Matt and his show, but as we aren't a gossip site, I wasn't going to simply repeat Perez's claims — for lots of reasons.

But I did call up Matthew's publicist and request an interview if, in fact, Perez's information was correct. Through his publicist, Matthew passed on doing the interview and the publicist told me they don't comment on their client's personal lives. And that post set off a heated discussion about outing, the closet and all the other related issues.

The issue of the closet is something we deal with at AfterElton.com a lot and we are constantly evaluating how we cover celebrities that may or may not be gay. First and foremost, we do not out people. It's our firm belief that despite the undeniably greater gay acceptance in society today, coming out still has serious ramifications for many people and is a decision to be made only by the individual in question (excluding closeted politician's, but that's another conversation for another site).

That being said, we also don't believe there is anything wrong with treating everyone the same and the questions asked of a straight celebrity are perfectly fine to ask of a gay celebrity when appropriate. Are you married? Single? What was your childhood like? How does being straight influence the way you play a gay character? Does your husband get jealous when you kiss another man? And so forth.

Here are some general observations and thoughts about where we stand today.

1) For our readers: Just because "everyone" in West Hollywood or New York "knows" Celebrity X is gay because you've seen him around town with another guy does not make it true or mean that the person is out publicly. First of all, New York and Los Angeles are not the entire world and secondly, being seen out in public with another man is not being out in any practical way.

2) For gay celebrities: Just because your family and friends know you are gay does not make you publicly out.

3) For representatives of gay celebrities: If your client is gay and your response is "no comment" because "we don't ever comment on our client's personal lives" all I have to say is "Poppycock." I may understand why you are hiding the info, but I'm not an idiot and neither are our readers. If your client discusses raising funds for Alzheimer's because their dad had it or working to fight testicular cancer because they have it or anything else not specifically about a particular role, then they do discuss their private lives.

4) There are legal issues involved. Like it or not, claiming a person is gay still has legal ramifications and you can be sued for defamation in almost half of the states in the U.S. Yes, the celebrity has to prove you are wrong, but the fact of the matter is not every celebrity rumored to be gay is gay, and I'm not about to risk my job on Perez Hilton's say so.

BTW, publicists? Please don't tell me information "off the record" and then hint you don't care what I say as long as it's without any attribution at all. Again, that could end with your client suing me and I don't traffic in gossip. Thanks, but no thanks.

5) Dear fellow journalists, please don't treat gay celebrities differently than straight ones. If you regularly ask straight actors about their spouses, children and how they personally relate to playing an ad executive from the 1950s, a starship captain or a serial killer, but avoid similar questions with those you suspect to be gay, you aren't doing your job. And given how quick you usually are to ask officially out actors about the same things you do straight ones, you know I'm right.

I can honestly say that after the success of Neil Patrick Harris has had after coming out publicly (apparently everyone in New York knew he was gay all along) I really thought things would be different and more actors would follow the Luke Macfarlane model and simply acknowledge the fact of their sexuality and move on. But I can tell you from personal experience that we still aren't there no matter how much I'd like us to be.

Which isn't to say I don't understand and appreciate the issues gay celebrities face. But the only reason things ever get better is because some people have the courage to care enough to make things better for all of us.

^^...Jake and Kiki were lobbying hard for Jake to replace....

Anonymous said...

That was a fair game and no reason for Tobey to be pissed with Kirsten or Jake - they are all actors looking for good, high profile movies.

Anonymous said...

Look, I said it was my opinion. Not claiming it is the case.

Anonymous said...

^^But since Kiki dated Tobey briefly before she started dating Jake, Tobey may have been a tad pissed. Again JMO.

But from Jake's Freudian slip someone might conclude that Jake is pissed with Tobey :)

Maybe both aren't too fond of each other? This monologe about his co stars who were most successful in the films with him implies that all their previous performances weren't all that and that includes Tobey. A disguised kick in the nuts, or what? ;)

Wow, people will twist and turn anything Jake says to make him look like an ass, eh? I didn't get any sense of arrogance or entitlement or whatever from that interview. It sounded like Jake was happy on behalf of his costars that they were able to make critics take notice.

He's so evil that Jake Gyllenhaal.

I remember when Jake said when BBM came out that he didn't think Heath could do it (playing Ennis) and that he was surprised when he saw the end result. I was quite irritated by it at the time. I really wonder why Heath liked him so much? But I feel he wasn't too good in judging people (friends, partners).

Anonymous said...

^^^ I'm sure Jake said that as the compliment, not trashing Heath's previous roles.

QUESTION: JIM, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT HOW YOU WENT ABOUT CREATING THIS AND HOW CLOSE YOU STAYED TO THE ORIGINAL AND ALSO CASTING THE YOUNG ACTRESS WHO PLAYED ISABELLE?

SHERIDAN: Yeah. Bailee Madison. She’s a sweet kid and I liked Taylor [Geare who plays the other daughter], too. Natalie stole her and put her in her next movie. She’s the lead in her next movie[Portman’s short film in “New York I Love You” which has already been released]. So the kids were great. It’s hard to know what you do to be original because David Benioff wrote the script and then we all got together and kept changing it and reworking it. You have to get into imagining that you’re doing something original otherwise you’d go nuts, I think. There used to be things in Ireland called ‘Show Bands’ and they used to imitate American songs. They’d always record the hits again. So I didn’t want to try and do the show band version, do you know what I mean? I think in watching the movie over and over a kind of thing reveals itself. My daughter is always saying that I don’t understand the movie she’s writing because it’s a woman’s movie and my other daughter goes to college here. So at the end I got afraid and I said, ‘Why don’t you do an analysis of both movies,’ because at times we do a few re-shoots, not many, and she did an analysis of what the difference was and it was something like Susanne’s [Bier] movie is more romantic and is more about, I suppose, the love relationship and ours was more about a family. I think the thing that I do is put families together. I think what she’s [Bier’s] doing is telling stories about inappropriate love. They’re just different approaches. It doesn’t feel like a remake to me anymore.

QUESTION: IT FEELS LIKE AN ORIGINAL?

SHERIDAN: Well, it’s not so much that. I was really in this position like a doctor where you don’t want to do any more damage than you can. I had a joke about this movie. I said it made about $200,000 or $300,000 at the American box office and if the critics would’ve ever paid in it would’ve made a $500 million. Like every critic saw it.

GYLLENHAAL: I can say that in researching the character that I played Jim and I went to a lot of different jails all over L.A. County and to juvenile halls and what happened totally, separately from the movie, I met these kids in this writing program at this juvenile hall and they were extraordinary kids. I mean if you want to get into politics we can talk about the kids that I met in this juvi. One of them that we met was this incredible storyteller that Jim ended up putting in the movie as one of the guys in the helicopter with Tobey. I have never been to the prison system, particularly in California or any place really, to see young men. This is a whole other type of young men being put in jail and to see how extraordinary many of them were and how many of them would never get out, that was an amazing thing. It was terrifying. Fourteen year olds to 18 year olds. I still go back to visit them. I still go back to that writing program because they’re pretty extraordinary kids and many of them have moved on, but they’re still coming in. We should think about that, too.

1:41, Didn't Jake throw a tantrum when Heath started getting most of the praise and attention? (I remember Lainey writing about it and calling Jake a spoiled, egotistical brat). Also when he arrived at the Toronto Film Festival for the BBM screening, he was upset that someone else was in his "suite" and demanded that this person be removed so his highness can move in there. The hotel refused and Jake threw yet another tantrum. People saw this.

Some of you who see Jake as this wonderful, poor misunderstood and used victim have to realize Jake has a huge ego thanks I believe to his dear old mother. Yes Reese is using Jake and Jake is using Reese. I have no doubt Jake threw tantrums. While I loathe Lainey because she can be bought and has been bought by Reeke, that is probably the only true piece of information she has said about Jake. I mean come on she calls him a spoiled brat back then and now she thinks that he can change Reese's bitch fact? Jake is not what he seems, in that press conference Jake sounded like someone who was trying to sound smart but couldn't. He came off as an ass yet again. I think he was trying to irritate Toby with those backhanded comments.

Not every actor, but maybe some actors who star with him in the same movie and get more praise for their performances?

Anonymous said...

The fangirls had a fit when Lainey made those comments back in Jan. 2006. I do believe her in this case because it would go alnong with his other bratty behavior like cancelling his NY appearences to promote BBM in DEc. '05 because the critics were praising Heath not him. He was also pissed that Jarhead didn't do well.

It was only when his peoplke told him to stop acting like a brat because it may cost him a nom, then he showed up on Leno, Oprah and did the awards shows with Heath.

And he was tossed out of his hotel in Toronto in 9/05, I rememer reading about it then.

Jake is a spoiled brat and I didn't care for his tone in that presse conference.

Good thing he had to be back on set today.

Jake is saying only nice things about Tobey:

...and then we had a Christmas break inbetween and then he had another week and when he came back he was another person and he was another person than what he was in the first couple of weeks that we started shooting. That was an extraordinary transformation, not only to watch as an actor but as a person and as an audience member. And now watching the movie I feel that way, too.

QUESTION: WAS IT HARD TO GET THIS FILM MADE, GIVEN THAT IT’S A WAR MOVIE AND DID IT TAKE A LONG TIME?

GYLLENHAAL: Can I say something real quick? It’s funny that people are saying that this is a war movie and I’ve been involved in a movie where people have said that to me in press conferences over and over again. I think as a result of obviously trying to sell the movie there’s an inclination – to just talk about your question – to not talk about that. I think you’re going to back into a corner but I don’t think that anyone is trying to pretend that we’re in some corner. We’re not in a corner. I think the movie is a journey and how they’re selling the movie is fascinating because the most extraordinary part of the movie is not given away at all in any of these ads or how they’re selling it. It’s the journey that Tobey’s character makes to get back home. I think that is kind of being…personally, that’s your job to say that that’s what the movie is about because that’s what it’s about. It is intertwined with a lot of other complications but mostly it’s about what this man does to get back to the people that he loves and to his life.

Bearding has nothing to do with Jake's acting or the quality of his acting. The point of bearding was to have Jake appear to be Mr. Straight and get offered a stready stream better, high profile, higher paying roles with high profile directors.

Brothers is a cheap movie: "Saturday at New York’s Four Seasons Hotel the actors, Sheridan and producer Ryan Kavanaugh held a press conference. A beaming Kavanaugh could not conceal his utter delight at how this $25 million movie has become the genuine sleeper of the season."

Anonymous said...

I predict best picture, best director and best actor (Tobey) noms.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Natalie for best actress? Just when people were doubting her as an actress she reemerges with a presumably great, maybe Oscar-worthy, performance. There you go, you just need to trash actors and they come out stronger out of it. lol

Anonymous said...

2 good, not great reviews + 2,5 great reviews = we'll see.

Anonymous said...

Sheridan is shorter than Tobey. Tobey seems in good spirits.

Anonymous said...

Ah Jakey you should have asked for Monday off to attend the premire tonight. I know you have to get back to your other job in LA but Reese would have not past up a chance to shine for you. I know you need your beauty sleep but actors should support their movies.

Jake said...

I'm not missing the most important movie premiere. The one in LA is on Dec.1 and Reese said that depending on how the reviews are after this weekend. If there is enough Oscar buzz, she may walk the red carpet with me. She said the best way to look like a tight couple is to share the attention the Oscar race gives you.

"WHAT BEARDING HAS TO DO WITH JAKE'S ACTING AND QUALITY OF HIS MOVIES???""

There are certain Oscar-worthy directors who *will not* work with Jake while he beards with sociopathic Witherspoon.

Period. Trust.

Whether he likes it or not, Brothers is the last dramatic Oscar-worthy film that Jake will be attached to for a long time.

Bearding giveth and bearding taketh away.

Anonymous said...

You are the one that is a sociopath, a word you use all the time. HW doesn't give a fuck about bearding, oscar worthy or not. If true than people like George, Leo, Travolta , Will Smith, Cruise, McBongo wouldn't be working either.

They don't give a shit about Jake but you do and what appears to be good reviews for Brothers nad maybe awards consideration, all this from bearding with more to come!!!

you need to stop with the fan fic. Period.Trust.

Let me repeat for the hearing disabled among us.

There are certain Oscar-worthy directors who *will not* work with Jake while he beards with sociopathic, nut-job Witherspoon. Period.

This is about Witherspoon specifically, not about bearding generally.

It's going to be second-rate rom-coms, action flicks and weird financing deals for the foreseeable future for Jakey.

And there is *nothing* that CAA or Disney can do about it. Nothing. They've tried and it hasn't worked. Jake's people are fighting tooth and nail for every deal. Nothing is handed to him any more.

The disparaging, disgruntled whisper campaign that followed him all over Martha's Vineyard like a shadow is still with him now.

If he wants to beard with nutty, sociopathic Reese, then let him live with the professional consequences.

Anyone who thinks that there are no downsides to bearding with creepy, nutty Witherspoon is crazy. There are no free lunches in HW. Bearding giveth and bearding taketh away.

Live with it, Babblers.

Anonymous said...

Oh chut up.

Anonymous said...

What whispering campaign are you referring to pray tell?

Anonymous said...

Sounds credible 11:51. Reese is not well liked. She has passed her prime but does not realize it yet. She could wield power at one time, but now she is just a liability.

Anonymous said...

Clint Eastwood wouldn't even meet with her. Reese desperately wanted that Angelina Jolie role.

It won't matter if Brothers gets a few critics awards--it's not going to win a Best Picture Oscar (although it could get nominated being that there are ten slots this year) and Jake is absolutely not going to get an Oscar nod and it's doubtful Natalie will either (very tough year for women). Sheridan could get one but again it's a tough, competitive year--Tobey could get one for Best Supporting Oscar (Best Actor will be impossible because again VERY competitive and crowded) and U2 for Best Song. That's it.

Anonymous said...

There are no free lunches in HW. Bearding giveth and bearding taketh away. "

Well, I don't know about that. Everybody beards in some way in Hollyweird.

Anonymous said...

Please. In Hollywood, it doesn't matter if you're Charles Manson or his sister, as long as your movies make money that's all that matters.

Anonymous said...

I don't think Jake doesn't get good projects because he beards, I think it's because he can't act. Not sure what happened to him since BBM but his acting has been pretty mediocre since then. Or maybe he's only good at acting troubled teenagers (when he was one) and acting a gay man (which he is) Awww poor Jakey..

The names of Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal should lure a respectable arthouse/mainstream contingent to this solidly accessible, admirably serious yet not entirely realized picture.
...
Still, that cast largely impresses. Portman has rarely been more movingly subdued as a wife and mother who refuses to let grief overpower her sense of responsibility, while Gyllenhaal is effortlessly believable as a drifter who finds, to his delight and ours, that fatherhood suits him well. Sheridan's empathetic touch with tyke actresses, so evident in 2003's "In America," pays off beautifully in his work with young Madison, who's heartbreaking as the older and wiser of the two Cahill girls.

With his crew cut and stiff posture (in contrast to Gyllenhaal's looser stance), Maguire is downright scary as a guy who seems to be headed the way of Pvt. Pyle in "Full Metal Jacket." But he still looks a tad boyish for the part (Ulrich Thomsen was in his 40s when he played the role for Bier), and his decision to go explosively over-the-top at moments only exposes Sam as a psychological construct -- more walking antiwar statement than full-blooded human being.

The only thing HW cares about is $$$ and the last 2 movies Reese was attached to made $$$$. HW supports bearding and they support nuts as long as they make $$$.

Jake is just an ok actor, and he and his handlers have finally wised up.

You sound like a b brokie that was obsessed with Chris and is pissed that he moved on, whispering campaign in MV my ass, you need to brush up on your fanfic skills.

Bottom line: You are pissed that Brothers is geting good reviews and Pop is going to be a hit, deal with that brokie.

11:08 Used to post about how HW has shunned Jake and he was alone and celibate, seperated from his family and Reese was his only HW pal and that Chris was the only sane/solid person in his life and kept him grounded.

Posted as an "insider" with info from HW and MV. Changed the fanfic when Chris stopped updating his blog and seem to have vanish from MV and only resurface with another Jake.

Time to revise the fanfic!!

HW doesn't give a fuck who bubble boy beards with.

The Oscar talk at this point is just a way to sell the film. It's difficult to get an audience for war films so they are trying to get Oscar hype.

And like it or not Jake Brothers IS a war film. Home front - front line, makes no difference.

Reading the press conference made my head ache. Jake makes no sense. What the hell is he talking about? It's mindless rambling. And once again a director mentions how difficult he is to work with. He sounds like an annoying character.

I wonder who the other potential beard they contacted was...

Anonymous said...

6:37: Chris moved on to the "sweet life" with the other Jake, keep up!!! Jake and Chris are long time friends, that's it but some thought otherwise.

When they read that Chris is in business with his other Jake friend on MV, it rattled their cage.

I could see alot of what 11:51pm is saying as truth. Reese is known as a bitch but she is also known as being totatlly professional and serious on set. It's pretty reasonable to imagine directors who don't want to work with her or deal with her through her set visits to Jake. But if Jake and his team (who advised him to beard) know that, why does he continue to still beard? Jake has proved his point-to the PR consuming public he is Jake-straight man, Reese's boyfriend. The majority of gossip blogs have stopped the Jake is gay hinting and the rag mags always refer to him as Reese's boyfriend. Reeke breaking up would give each one of them at least 1 year worth of sympathy PR stories. If Jake is so ambitious and greedy about his career, why stay with someone who is slowly poisoning it?

Anonymous said...

Reese probably knows how to play by the rules and play hard. She may burn some bridges doing it but is able to bring in the cash so doesn't need to change her style.

Anonymous said...

Legally Blonde director said that he doesn't want to work with Witherspoon again. Vince Vaughn didn't even try to pretend he can stand her.

You can bet that Reese didn't sign the fauxmance contract which allows Jake to dump her when that suits him.

Reading the press conference made my head ache. Jake makes no sense. What the hell is he talking about? It's mindless rambling.

He goes off the point even on the simplest subjects. Anyone that inarticulate does not have clarity in the brain. Natalie's thought processes aren't too coherent, either. She's more educated and articulate than Jake, but she says and believes dumb things - veg/rape/polanski.

9:20 - Good questions. Why continue in spite of the downsides? Because it's better than what he had before (ie. he has his franchise and a running buddy nearby who can pay her own way). Before, he was respectable, lonely (as all closeted ambitious gay men in HW tend to be, especially when their family is far away), and quite possibly semi-broke. He doesn't want to go back to that.

I agree with the person who said that Brothers will likely be ok, but probably not many award chances. But that's a ton better than the completely bomb that was Redition. Maybe that's a good sign that it slowly goes uphill with his movie career again?

Is Supporting Actor the Charm? said...

At the dawning of the decade, Jude Law and Colin Farrell seemed to be the actors to beat for every leading-man role. Their ubiquity and overexposure were so extreme that Chris Rock memorably mocked them at the 2005 Oscars: “You want Tom Cruise and all you can get is Jude Law? Wait! You want Russell Crowe and all you can get is Colin Farrell? Wait! Alexander is not Gladiator.”

True enough, each actor flamed out in his own way: Farrell with Alexander, Miami Vice, and Daredevil onscreen, and a sex tape, weight gain, and a rehab stint off. Law released five movies in 2004 (including the dreadful Alfie), but more memorable was the 2005 news of his affair with a nanny, which broke up his relationship with Sienna Miller. In December, both actors seek to restore their credibility with humble turns as supporting men: Farrell as the country-singing protégé to an old coot (Jeff Bridges) in Crazy Heart; Law as Dr. Watson to Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes. Then they pay tribute to their lost peer, Heath Ledger, by playing looking-glass iterations of Ledger’s suave con artist in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

"http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/2009/11/23/brothers_vs._brothers/ :

It’s hard to put your finger on why something no longer rings true: why the tough-as-nails military Dad (Sam Shepard), skinny, stressed-out veteran (Maguire) and bewildered wife (Portman) veer toward cliche. For his part, Gyllenhaal gives one of the most subtle and nuanced performances of his career."

A not so good review:

“Brothers,” Jim Sheridan’s new film, falls short of its ambitious goal to be an emotionally powerful family drama, perhaps because it’s trying too hard to do too much but in very conventional and familiar ways.

"Delivering career-best work" sounds like bullshit:
The film’s profile will be fuelled by the high powered cast of young Hollywood A-listers led by Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman, each arguably delivering career-best work.

I would love to read more about the performances:
If Gyllenhaal is perhaps too genteel for the part of Tommy, Maguire conveys Sam’s internal battles skilfully, and Portman has never been this unaffected as former cheerleader Grace.

Interesting comment:
Sheridan’s only failing is in a weak and abrupt “Hollywood” ending. He offers hope and possible redemption, where Bier chose to take a more sceptical approach.

Not a word about the performances!

For “Brothers” to be emotionally powerful and dramatically compelling, it needed to be more complex, subtle, and ambiguous.

I think Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz, Zooey Deschanel all look cute and healthy and there are some other actresses too.

I like Anne, but in the last event she attended she looked as if she lost weight again. It doesn't suit her. As for Natalie, I think the problem with her is not so much her weight, but her head is too big for her body.
