In or Out?

KNOCK, KNOCK. WHO'S THERE? THE CLOSET. YOU'RE STILL AROUND? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!

There's been a great deal of discussion on the site [After Elton] over the past couple of weeks about gay celebrities, the closet and what constitutes being "out." And even though we've discussed the issue numerous times before, it seems like it is once again time to revisit the topic. And it's a subject that is as tricky as ever and that can have real consequences for the celebrities involved.

Perez kicked the latest round of debate off when he posted an item about White Collar's Matthew Bomer. Without citing a source or saying how he knew, Perez simply claimed Matt was an out gay man. If true, we were certainly interested in writing about Matt and his show, but as we aren't a gossip site, I wasn't going to simply repeat Perez's claims — for lots of reasons.

But I did call up Matthew's publicist and request an interview if, in fact, Perez's information was correct. Through his publicist, Matthew passed on doing the interview and the publicist told me they don't comment on their client's personal lives. And that post set off a heated discussion about outing, the closet and all the other related issues.

The issue of the closet is something we deal with at AfterElton.com a lot and we are constantly evaluating how we cover celebrities that may or may not be gay. First and foremost, we do not out people. It's our firm belief that despite the undeniably greater gay acceptance in society today, coming out still has serious ramifications for many people and is a decision to be made only by the individual in question (excluding closeted politician's, but that's another conversation for another site).

That being said, we also don't believe there is anything wrong with treating everyone the same and the questions asked of a straight celebrity are perfectly fine to ask of a gay celebrity when appropriate. Are you married? Single? What was your childhood like? How does being straight influence the way you play a gay character? Does your husband get jealous when you kiss another man? And so forth.

Here are some general observations and thoughts about where we stand today.

1) For our readers: Just because "everyone" in West Hollywood or New York "knows" Celebrity X is gay because you've seen him around town with another guy does not make it true or mean that the person is out publicly. First of all, New York and Los Angeles are not the entire world and secondly, being seen out in public with another man is not being out in any practical way.

2) For gay celebrities: Just because your family and friends know you are gay does not make you publicly out.

3) For representatives of gay celebrities: If your client is gay and your response is "no comment" because "we don't ever comment on our client's personal lives" all I have to say is "Poppycock." I may understand why you are hiding the info, but I'm not an idiot and neither are our readers. If your client discusses raising funds for Alzheimer's because their dad had it or working to fight testicular cancer because they have it or anything else not specifically about a particular role, then they do discuss their private lives.

4) There are legal issues involved. Like it or not, claiming a person is gay still has legal ramifications and you can be sued for defamation in almost half of the states in the U.S. Yes, the celebrity has to prove you are wrong, but the fact of the matter is not every celebrity rumored to be gay is gay, and I'm not about to risk my job on Perez Hilton's say so.

BTW, publicists? Please don't tell me information "off the record" and then hint you don't care what I say as long as it's without any attribution at all. Again, that could end with your client suing me and I don't traffic in gossip. Thanks, but no thanks.

5) Dear fellow journalists, please don't treat gay celebrities differently than straight ones. If you regularly ask straight actors about their spouses, children and how they personally relate to playing an ad executive from the 1950s, a starship captain or a serial killer, but avoid similar questions with those you suspect to be gay, you aren't doing your job. And given how quick you usually are to ask officially out actors about the same things you do straight ones, you know I'm right.

I can honestly say that after the success of Neil Patrick Harris has had after coming out publicly (apparently everyone in New York knew he was gay all along) I really thought things would be different and more actors would follow the Luke Macfarlane model and simply acknowledge the fact of their sexuality and move on. But I can tell you from personal experience that we still aren't there no matter how much I'd like us to be.

Which isn't to say I don't understand and appreciate the issues gay celebrities face. But the only reason things ever get better is because some people have the courage to care enough to make things better for all of us.

Bad jsrocks, UV will kick her ass, lol!

"I don't see the Prince of Persia. I think Jake is too commercial to have a role like this. I just see a messy Jake Gyllenhaal who could use a shower.

I'm going to go see this film, but he sort of doesn't look right for the role to me. idk"

Hey in those pics Jake had the same haircut Reese did last year around this time before she got her extensions.

No, this is Aniston's hairdo.

Jake is a gorgeous man but that hair is awful, it takes away from his looks because its distracting. Most people thinks its wig, I think its his real hair. He has thick hair and if grown long but not long enough thick hair really becomes unruly. He would been better off with a wig. And it those pics, his head is the focus. And by the way, what else should I be looking at? His nose hair?

I think Jake looks good in new POP pic; very rugged. But I also think that he looks like he needs some soap and shampoo. The whole needing a shower thing is distracting when you look at him. Every time I see a POP poster my first thought is Persia didn't have soap and water? And some of the comments on ONTD are brutal. Consensus seems to be making fun of Jake and movie look like hugh fail. I wonder if Disney is starting to get nervous yet. Each new glimpse of something about POP gets more negative comments every time. Disney's PR must absolutely moniter what gossip sites say. Disney is very PR conscious.

He looks like a Basset Hound...

He's lucky to have a long jaw - he'll never have a double chin.

As for the mouth? It's perfect.

The hazy focus during the zoom-in on Maguire is due to low light -- apologies."

More from Jeffrey Wells

November 10, 2009
Time To Show Brothers

Last night Envelope/Notes on a Season columnist Pete Hammond wrote with some enthusiasm about a Sunday DGA screening of Jim Sheridan's Brothers (Lionsgate, 12.4), the remake of Susanne Bier's 2004 film with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman costarring.

Hammond asked "why no bloggers are buzzing about Brothers even with its Dec. 4 opening less than a month away"? Well, I've been writing about this film for over two years now, beginning with a start-of-filming announcement and into a 10.1.08 report that MGM had bumped Brothers out of a once-planned 12.4.08 release.

But to answer Hammond, no one's blogging about Brothers because Lionsgate has been lagging on press screenings invites, or at least none as far as this inbox is concerned. I'm told there's some kind of "special screening" in Manhattan slated for 11.22, and an L.A. premiere screening set for 12.1. Sheridan is currently in Toronto preparing to shoot Dream House, a psychological thriller with Daniel Craig starring. He flies to Ireland tomorrow and returns to this side of the pond a week or so later.

Sheridan's remake follows Bier's basic story. Maguire and Gyllenhaal are the brothers separated by character and philosophy (as well as four inches of height). Maguire is the older, "responsible," married brother who goes off to Afghanistan and gets into a situation that results in a MIA report sent home. Portman plays Maguire's wife. Gyllenhaal is the younger fuck-up brother who begins to fill his brother's familial duties when Maguire disappears during a skirmish and is presumed dead.

Lionsgate is obviously much more interested in promoting Precious than Brothers at this stage, and who can blame them? But conspicuously not screening a film that will be released nearly three weeks hence seems like a weird way to play it. Being a huge fan of Bier's original work, I refuse to believe that a film with this story and a cast of this calibre wouldn't deliver in a significant and applaudable way.

Brothers said...

"This powerful and timely story of a decorated Marine, presumed dead in Afghanistan, who comes home to great conflict within his family and within his own head, is a poignant and explosive look at the toll that combat exacts from veterans' lives," Hammond writes. "It feels especially pertinent now in the wake of the Ft. Hood tragedy and shows that war doesn't really end for some vets once they return.

"Sheridan received a tremendous ovation Sunday afternoon when he was introduced for a q & a after a very well-received Directors Guild of America screening. The free-wheeling director engaged in a refreshingly honest and thoughtful conversation about the film's bumpy journey to being remade.

"Sheridan pointed out that he doesn't normally like the idea of remakes, but this one seemed irresistible, if full of minefields. In the end he believes it is quite faithful to the spirit of the Danish original and said Relativity Media, which financed the film, even did research screenings on Bier's movie to get a take from an American audience for help in shaping the redo.

"[Sheridan] also mentioned there were some reshoots as he tried to get a grip on what the movie should be.

"The film was finished by November 2008 but Relativity agreed to hold it for a year to get just the right release date. Sheridan says selling any film with a war theme is tricky and fall is a better time for this particular subject matter. With Summit's widely acclaimed Iraq war flick, The Hurt Locker opening last summer, it was probably a wise move."

When I saw the poster, I thought it was for some sci-fi movie about cloning.

Yay, so Brothers is well received and Tobey might get an Oscar nod. Good news!

Anonymous said...

There are Brothers reviews? Link please!

Anonymous said...

Reese is probably emailing Jake right now to tell him that Brothers seems to be well received and it's because he picked her as his beard. She's also probably telling him that POP will be a huge hit and that he wouldn't have had any success if he didn't beard with her. And that moron is probably believing her.

Anonymous said...

Isn't this guy from Hollywood Elswhere a reviewer? And some posts ago there was another review that said that the movie was better then expected and that Tobey was Oscar-worthy.

Anonymous said...

Huh? Who would ever think that Reese has anything to do with Brothers or PoP quality?!?

Anonymous said...

Isn't this guy from Hollywood Elswhere a reviewer?

Yes, but he didn't post his Brothers review.

That comment just said that Brothers is quite good.

Anonymous said...

^^But we can all assume it's positive since, first he seems to be a big Jake supporter (he loves all Jake movies), second he called the movie "powerful".

Anonymous said...

No, that LA Times guy called the movie "powerful".

Anonymous said...

^^Well that's even better. LOL.

Anonymous said...

It would be if that LA Times guy was some respected critic.

So far Brothers reviews / comments go from "OK movie" to "there might be Oscar nominations".

Anonymous said...

The only possible Oscar nom would be for Tobey. It is his movie but that is a real long shot and wont happen.

Anonymous said...

I've watched Brothers trailers and all available clips. I think it it's a good movie, but I didn't see anything that would really make me want to see it.

Looks like everyone agrees that little girls are great, especially Bailee Madison.

P.S. Trailer for Maggie's Crazy Heart was enough to make me want to see the movie.

Some people mentioned that Tobey isn't very good - we need more reviews.

Jake and Nat - a bit of JJ Brothers promotion

Wow, Colin and Jeff are great! :)

Why on earth did they use that picture? Jake looks about 17 there. They must have some more recent shots from the movie shot that would have been better. His management has really gone to hell.

Frankly Maguire overactes to death in these clips but you know he has the "showy" character so = oscar nom.
Hollywood is so predictible it's not funny!

A pretty good review on this blog.

All three look good. Natalie is Jake's most beautiful female co-star he ever had, hands down.

That's extremely good review. From trailers and clips I can see good acting, but nothing remakable.

Heads up for fans: Imaginarium will open nationwide in the USA in January 2010. :)

Anne is too goofy looking to be called beautiful. But when she's done well, she is an attention grabber in addition to her hight and proportions. She's definitely sexier than Natalie, but Natalie is obviously more beautiful.

Nice photo, but they could post few Nat and Jake stills from Brothers.

That blog, which launched only last month, looks suspect. Maybe it's a Payu2Blog. The blogger is a mediocre writer and the things he says..

"Ever since starring in the indie hit, "Brick", Joseph Gordon Levitt has become on of the greatest actors working today."

"The Killing Room" ... I was surprised at how good the acting was. Usually, films that go straight to DVD have terrible acting, but the performances in this were phenomenal. Who knew that Nick Cannon was capable of such a powerful performance?"

Anonymous said...

^^^ The blogger likes to be positive ;)

Anonymous said...

I don't see why this blogger would be suspect, he don't present himself as a professional critic writer, just a lambda citizen who gives an opinion.

I am waiting for Jeffrey wells or roger Ebert review!

I don't think BROTHERS is the best movie of the year but all the actors seems excellent and sheridan is a good director.

Can you see excellent performances from trailers and clips?

I'm waiting for 15-20 reviews to make up my mind :)

^^^ I thought a day later of the impact James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo had in “Rebel Without a Cause” and I don’t the comparison is far-fetched here.

Wow, he's serious?!

JAKE: There was one moment where – I don’t know if you remember this, Jim – where Natalie’s character tells my character that Tobey has been killed. We did talk for a little while about me falling in the snow and making snow angels. I don’t know if you remember that?
SHERIDAN: No.

Making snow angels?! :)

SHERIDAN: No.

Sheridan blocked out the memory of that bad idea :)

QUESTION: YOU ALL KNOW EACH OTHER. WAS THERE A LOT OF REHEARSAL ON THIS? OR WAS THERE A LOT OF STAYING IN CHARACTER TO GET THE PROPER TONE ON SET AND CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT, THE ATMOSPHERE IN MAKING THE FILM?

GYLLENHAAL: It was great to be in a remake because you really have a new sense…[laughs]. Naturally, because all know each other, I found that we all had fascinating complications and fascinating interactions just as the people that we are. There was very little to do as a result of that. So often you have to create some kind of back story but because of the real life, people have very often said to me that I look like Tobey and so I thought that it was a perfect casting thing, that Jim put us together. We really just made a movie so that I could say that I look a little bit different from Tobey. So to all those cab drivers in New York, I’m not Spider-Man. I think that was just inherent. It was there. It existed and it took very little to make that happen. A little uncomfortable on set sometimes because what it is real also sometimes is what it is being pretended. At the same time, as an actor, I think it was great food for a great meal.

Boston Herald said...

SHERIDAN: Where I come from and you’re working with actors you’re all the time trying to stop them performing. These guys were so still I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t have any work to do.’ American actors are so used to the medium of film.

GYLLENHAAL: Did you say ‘stale’?

SHERIDAN: I didn’t say ‘stale.’ I wouldn’t say stale. The difficulty with Jake is he’s kind of like, you know the way that other actors are really intense and they come on and you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ Jake is kind of like that but he’s got a 360 degree intensity. You never know where he’s looking. He’s kind of in the scene but he’s kind of looking around himself. It takes a bit of getting used to and it took me a few weeks to get used to Jake’s approach which is very unique in my experience. He just thinks he’s in real life — and he’s up on the screen. Jake is just the same now as on the thing, up with the kid, up with his sister’s kid. He keeps joking even when I get serious and all, don’t you?

GYLLENHAAL: I think you just described me as a crazy person. ‘Jake has no idea of reality’.

QUESTION: IS THAT A TRUTH ABOUT YOU, JAKE?

GYLLENHAAL: Well, I can say that I think watching Tobey in the movie, that’s sort of the most extraordinary truth of it, watching somebody do something like that. I can only speak from personal experience but I have been blessed to watch actors who people didn’t feel were a certain way or could perform a certain thing do that. I’ve been honored to watch that. It’s always nice to see when people, journalists and people who never thought of someone one way, and then seeing them that way. I watched him go from the first part of the movie [BEFORE MAGUIRE’S CHARACTER GOES OVERSEAS] and then we had a Christmas break inbetween and then he had another week and when he came back he was another person and he was another person than what he was in the first couple of weeks that we started shooting. That was an extraordinary transformation, not only to watch as an actor but as a person and as an audience member. And now watching the movie I feel that way, too. I think that’s what we could talk about. I mean, I could talk about Natalie, too, but then I think she would probably freak out. I’ll stick with Tobey.

He's probably talking about Aniston and Heath too who got their most accolades in the film with him. Well Heath topped himself in TDK. Jake of course is always the perfect performner. Not even he thinks that he's underrated. ;)

Could be. ;) I don't think they're good friends. Friendly to each other, but probably no friends. JMO of course.

Do you think there is a reason why Tobey and Jake probably aren't friends?

^^I think Jake and Kiki were lobbying hard be replace Tobey in Spidey two when Tobey was reluctant to return. But he eventually did. I think this kind of spoiled his friendship to Kiki and probably Jake too.
