Dear Ted:
I was just looking through People's Sexiest Man issue. How many of the drool-worthy guys pictured in that issue are something other than hetero? Adam Lambert is one, so two or three? Four? More than five? Or would it be easier and less litigious for me to ask you which ones are straight as an arrow?

I'm going to say something that I'm EVERYONE who reads this blog will not agree with--I'm just being honest here--I don't think it's a huge tragedy but...based on how Jake looks at the cocktail party for Brothers and on that E interview, he is not aging well or rather as he gets older, he is losing his boyish prettiness. Not a huge deal but he's not nearly as beautiful as he was during his BBM period. I'm sure EVERYONE will disagree of course.
November 24, 2009 6:50 PM

^^ not everyone here will disagree, I won't. I was thinking exactly the same thing as you are.
November 24, 2009 6:55 PM

Thanks. It's like he's going through an awkward period. It's strange. I mean he's only 28, right?

November 24, 2009 7:02 PM

It’s like Jake has aged a lot in the last couple of years or maybe he’s just losing his boyishness. Not that I think he isn’t good looking still but he used to be beautiful.
November 24, 2009 7:04 PM

" Not that I think he isn’t good looking still but he used to be beautiful."

Not really, it was cast with alot of other men. Seriously Jake is one of those guys looks hot sometimes and then others, you think what the hell happen? His People pic is horrible. It looked like one of those oomputer created images that the police use to identify a criminal.
November 24, 2009 7:08 PM

Granted, he's NOT unhealthy looking the way Heath (may he RIP) was before he died. He just looks like he's either going through an awkward period or isn't aging well. Maybe as he gets older, he's getting more unphotogenic angles?
November 24, 2009 7:11 PM

James Franco is 32 and he's looking younger than Jake IMO. I think what Jake needs is to put on weight again. But yes, he was absolutely perfect looking in BBM. I doubt he'll ever look as good. Not that that's important anyway.
November 24, 2009 7:13 PM

7:11 PM, as I've said, I think it's the weight loss presumably for LAOD.

Bad pic, I agree. What the fuck were they thinking? Oh, I forgot, they used a bad photo of Johnny Depp for the cover! lol

When, where and what. Its 2009, his last pic was POP finished in 2008. Heath died in early 2008, didn't he?

Maybe it's really as simple as him losing weight for the role in LAOD and it just doesn't suit him that much?

"But why, Anne's character is the sick one?"

Well, her weight loss is explained by her character's condition then. ;) Anne doesn't look good either tbh. Both look better with more meat on their bones.

Jake lost his bulk from POP which is good thing. I didn't like his abs, they were too bulky. I just think he's no longer a boy. It happened to Brad Pitt and now its slowing happening to Jake. Its mother nature simple as that. But Jolie happened to Brad too.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately Witherspoon is no Jolie. LOL.

Anonymous said...

Pitt was beautiful for a LONG time--when he did Troy, he was in his late 30s (maybe turned 40). Jake is only 28. And about how difficult 2008 was for Jake--citing Heath's death. Well, clearly Jake got over that one very quickly (a week) so I guess not.

Anonymous said...

Brad was 40 when he did Troy. People forget he was born in 1963.

Anonymous said...

Brad is in his 40's for crying out laud. Jake is just 28.

I'm bad, this made me laugh.

Just Saying said...

I was talking about Brad from his breakout movie Thelma and Louise he was boyish then, but soon after he grew into a man. I know Brad is over 40 now, I was talking about the natural progression from boy to man. I was just taking a hit at Jolie, I'm glad Reese is not Jolie. Jolie seems really dark and scary.

Did Jake actually make a joke about dating Sheridan? Geesh, the man is like a walking Freudian slip in progress. His gayness is really the gift that keeps on giving. And now you wonder why he's been muzzled by Disney/CAA for two years? Christ. At least he didn't call Sheridan 'divine' this time, if even worse, suggest that Sheridan grows a mean beard.

This man is so skittish, incoherent and unpredictable now. He's like a dog straining on the leash. Or maybe the image that I'm looking for is a chemically castrated gay pony with impulse control problems. Choose your poison.

Mare Hugs Jake

Watch me bury the lead.

I'll be writing about Brothers, the new war-at-home drama, for Tribeca Film soon but for now I just wanted to say that I didn't even know until I was watching it how much I'd missed Mare Winningham. She's an actress whose vibe is a little closer to television (familial, earthy, someone you might see every day) but whose talent is silver screen (rare, outsized, possibly superhuman). I was thrilled when she was unexpectedly nominated for an Oscar for Georgia in the 90s. If you've never seen that performance you must. She's projecting so many layers of character in that film, you start to realize that most performances are threadbare. Put some layers on, actors! You'll catch a cold.

Even though Mare has next to nothing to do in Brothers other than project step-maternal concern, I wanted to hug her as hard as she's hugging Jake Gyllenhaal in the photo.

And usually when someone is hugging Jake Gyllenhaal I am thinking about being them rather than hugging them back. I'm just sayin'.

So yeah, I met Jake Gyllenhaal.

Also rare, outsized, superhuman...

He looks exactly the same offscreen as on (which isn't always the case for better and for worse). I don't advise, if you are a mere mortal like myself, to stand next to celebrities and be photographed. You will just feel so... pathetically human. I don't normally do it (this is only the second time but the first was with Julianne Moore years ago and in both cases, I couldn't not. I'm only human). He was friendly and after I paid him the mandatory compliments that probably sounded like weird if familiar gibberish to him (I'm guessing) we chatted very briefly about Brothers and the Danish film its based on -- yes, he's seen it --before we took this photo. Then I let him loose on the next person who was desperate to talk to him. They were also human.

It's so weird when celebrities are in a room. The crowd can be totally dispersed and navigable and then *boom* bottleneck traffic jams. Everyone wants to be in the place nearest to the celebrity/celebrities.

LOL! The Sheridan bit reminds me when Jake was doing press for Rendition. He was being interviewed on the Red carpet and was asked about taking dates to events like this and he pointed to his BG and said that he was his date!

Also during a Rendition Press conference they tried to bring up the Reese dating rumors, he said that he didn't want to talk about that but apparently he is dating a number of people and not all of them are of the opposite sex and then encouraged the reporter to start a rumor about him and Peter dating.

This was the same interview that he said that Reese grew a mean beard after a reporter noticed that he and peter both grew beards and "matched".

IMO It's a way of Jake confronting the gay rumors, by joking about them. It's not a slip, it's on purpose and PR sanctioned, especially crap shows like E wher stuff like that can be edited out, LOL!

Thinking he can joke about them, there is no truth to the rumours whatsoever?

Thinking he can joke about them, there is no truth to the rumours whatsoever?

Joking about gay rumors is a great way of selling straight image AND a way to joke about his own gayness.

When Esquire discovers a Web site that calls Clooney "gay, gay, gay," the good-natured actor quips, "No, I'm gay, gay. The third gay - that was pushing it."

How is it PR sanctioned?

Anonymous said...

(Please God, please make Jake-y a big Top-y)

LOL, the world is full of bottoms!

Anonymous said...

It's PR sanctioned because crap shows like E, ET, Access HW and Extra are all PR sanctioned shows and stars film their segments with PR in tow. They saw the rushes before anyting is aired, also the interviews are not spontaneous no matter how it looks. The Extra, E, Access, ET interviews were all done back to back during the press junket on Saturday, PR was there and probably checkled at the planned Sheridan joke.

The press conference from Rendition in 2007, the one where he mentions being rumored to be dating a whole bunch of people including people not of the opposite sex, Peter, Reese growing a beard, etc. was done one day after the NE did the story on Jake and BT, based on J. Jaxson story. It wasn't on the front page but you bet PR knew about it and most likely told the press no questions about that but Jake most likely decided to joke about the rumors and PR was OK with it.

The press conference was at the TIFF and the night before Lainey was on air talking about it , said it was a joke/BS just like the NE did but she also showed footage of the red carpet arrivals, saw Chris, pointed him out to the panel, and said that this is the guy he was rumored to be with.

At the time I was surprised that she would name a "civilian" in gossip but I was told that she did it before, naming Chris on the air, kind of reckless IMO.

Anyway, PR IMO is OK with actors joking about it.

Anonymous said...

Does Jake care what his PR thinks about gay jokes? PR works for Jake, not vice versa.

Anonymous said...

Jake's PR didn't bother with this:

Did you catch this?
When you watch the interview you hear the reporter ask him about the paparazzi taking picutre of him when he is out with Reese and he then says.

"Well, that's just a little part of this job", that Jake corrects himself and then says "the job"?

I think Jake was totally relaxed and enjoying the interview [E!'s Daily 10 - Jake Gyllenhaal (11.23.09)]. It seemed like he liked Ben. I think Bens sweating was due to the lighting. I was impressed with Jakes remark about Nixon sweating in the famous Nixon vs Kennedy debate. Jake knows his politics. That debate took place in 1960.
------

Jake seemed sharp as a tack in the interview whereas I thought he was almost incoherent at the Brothers premiere press conference. Very weird.

Pete Hammond didn't change his mind ;)

"Structurally, Brothers is remarkably faithful to the Bier film. Sheridan and screenwriter David Benioff still tip the balance in this version to Sam’s character after a pivotal scene in Afghanistan where he is forced to make a wrenching decision that strips him of his humanity. After that point the character goes in new directions taking the key dramatics of the film along with him.

As the tortured marine, Maguire gives the best performance of his career to date. His anguish during the scene with the Taliban and his slow burn during the aforementioned dinner scene build to the boiling point but the actor never goes over the line. It’s a mature role and a risky one that he pulls off with skill. Despite the film’s title Gyllenhaal is really a supporting player here and handles the part of the evolving sibling well while Portman is terrific as the emotionally confused but sympathetic wife. Standout among the rest of the cast is 10 year old Bailee Madison who delivers one of the best kid performances seen in a long time. Her bit with the balloon at the dinner table is an instant classic."

The performances are hit and miss in terms of the casts deliveries but overall make for a passable ensemble performance. Natalie
Portman, the Oscar nominated actress of Closer, takes on her most mature role of her career. Playing a mother of two with Portman’s
age 28 is a stretch when looking at the petite and youthful actress. Portman takes on her transformation with poise and charisma.
Jake Gyllenhaal, our young “Jack Twist” from his Oscar nominated Brokeback Mountain, has been a talent to watch for years now. As
“Tommy,” Gyllenhaal brings a hard yet tender performance not seen before by him. He doesn't command “Tommy” like I had hoped,
but Gyllenhaal is an outstanding talent with much promise to win his own Oscar someday. Veteran actor Sam Shepard, who was
once nominated by the Academy for The Right Stuff, does an impeccable job as Hank, an ex-marine with a drinking problem, who
makes evident preferences of children. It’s great to see an actor of Shepard’s caliber still giving great work. Mare Winningham, Patrick
Flueger, Taylor Geare, and especially Bailee Madison, all contribute beautifully to an outstanding cast.

In the end, it’s Tobey Maguire who gives his best performance to date. As “Capt. Sam Kahill,” Maguire has finally showed up his once
promising acting chops in his earlier part of his career. Maguire’s “Sam” is once a devoted father and husband with much love for his
younger brother “Tommy.” After his painful capture and lucky return to civilization, there is something different about Sam. His entire
post-traumatic war syndrome is manifested in his constant concern of whether or not his brother and his wife slept together during his
absence. Maguire is wrapped in Sam like a quilted blanket, desperately trying to release the anguish of his pain. Maguire’s approach
to the character is different then initially interpreted. He brings it to a whole new level, something excruciating and dying to be set free
from.

It’s Maguire’s performance that stands out as the only worthy part of the film in need of citation. He would have faired better however,
in the supporting category. The three main characters are all co-leads which make it tricky to campaign them but if he’s Lead then all
of them should be and vice-versa. Brothers doesn't measure up to some of the Iraqi-war films we’ve seen succeed as of late.

Did Jake actually attend the Brothers premiere after party but not walk down the red carpet? Is anyone going to suggest that his plane arrived mysteriously in time for the after party but not the movie?

This is exactly the kind of loony behavior that happens when you beard with a certified manipulative, vindictive, jealous sociopath like Witherspoon. Oscar level directors don't tolerate that kind of nonsense for long, which is exactly why Reese couldn't buy a film like Brothers for ten million dollars and why we won't see Jake in another film like Brothers for a long time.

At that press conference, Sheridan, Portman and Maguire look like they are indulging a small child with ADD. They all have this exasperated look on their faces.

I think the point is that you can't tell someone's sexuality by a tone of voice, how they look, or that they like music and the arts, and further that it shouldn't even be an issue. If anyone else made those broad assumptions, they'd be labelled a homophobe. I personally don't have "gaydar" and it's insulting to read these things. Comments like that.

Polarizing debates like this only cause ill feelings. It reminds me of the women's movement when women's traditional roles were thought of as oppressive, like the prison of stereotypical masculine roles can be thought of, no variations allowed. It was only later that for women, her right to choose to live her life the way she wants to truly defined freedom for women, and I hope that men can be whoever they are without being judged, masculine, effeminate or anything in between.

But the rumors around Jake are very serious (and probably easily documented if you didn't have to worry about the lawyers), and he is one of the worse liars in Hollywood. For actors in the latter category, a Freudian slip is likely.

He can get away with the joking because he is A-list, something Jake isn't despite his PR spin and fangirl insistance that he is.

Clooney doesn't have to lie, he just trots out some nameless bimbo when he has a movie out and dumps her when awards season is over and the press never asks about the bimbos because they are gone!

He's smart and so is his PR team, Jake and his PR team are dumber than dirt.

No. If it were simply about calling someone gay only. It's not that simple. Don't pick out one clause of a sentence, you need to comprehend the entire post. But you knew that.

You tried to corner someone into the answer you wanted, and when that failed, you punt and flat out accuse someone with no basis in fact at all. You are wrong on all counts. I don't have a problem with any of that post, it's an opinion, it's subjective. I don't define things so rigidly. It's also not a fact. There are other, more mocking posts that I am referring to - not the particular one you post. My post may not make sense to you, but that doesn't make it worthless. Also, if you are a gay man, you might have a point - but if not, it's not your culture to borrow. Simple as that.

"The Clooney gay rumors are serious, have been for awhile ..... "

The rumors around Clooney are not serious at all. Do you weigh all internet gay rumors the same way? You can't compare the persistence of Toothy Tile and all of the rumors about Jake way before BBM (dating back to Billy Crystal's statement and Jake's admission that he was interested in men at Columbia) and after BBM (so much evidence it's embarassing) to idle speculation about Clooney, who doesn't get skittish about his lifestyle (or even residence) the way that Jake does. There is absolutely NO comparison between Clooney and Jake. Comparing them is like comparing VWs to Porsches.

"Clooney doesn't have to lie, he just trots out some nameless bimbo when he has a movie out and dumps her"

If Clooney doesn't have to lie, why trot out the bimbettes? It's simple. Because he *is* a serial heterosexual filanderer, he's been that way for a long time, everyone knows it and he's not ashamed of it. And even if he did have to lie, he'd do a better job than Jake, not because his pr is better but because he's naturally smarmy and manipulative (just like Witherspoon).

Jake's lies are as obvious as the day is long because he's a bad liar naturally, there is overwhelming evidence that he is gay (so much in fact that his lawyers are always on some gossip columnists' speed dial), he has taken great pains to strip down his life and muzzle his comments and political activism in order to squelch gay rumors (Clooney has never done that), and everyone knows that gay men have to lie in order to land the romantic action lead in an expensive franchise.

Disney just did Jake a huge favor, but he had to sell his sold to get his dream. He is clearly very skittish and conflicted about the whole thing.

"That's the reason I think joking about being gay is a good strategy - people won't take the slip seriously."

Jake has around ten million reasons to lie, and Clooney doesn't. Actors love to play with gay rumors when it suits their purposes, but for some actors, like Jake, the ruse just doesn't work because you know their history and character. That's why Disney and CAA have muzzled him for two years. They know his character and temperament as well.

You can't compare a great liar who doesn't have to lie to a bad liar who does.

Of course there's exceptions. But remember, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. IMO some posters like you argue against them because they want to portray Jake as a gayish straight man - the effeminate but totally fabulous straight guy who's dating Reese! LOL

I haven't seen one word about the defeat of gay marriage in ME, just nonstop TT nonsense.

Nonsense. Stereotypes are not stereotypes for a reason. They exist because of ignorance - a few people may or may not have certain qualities, so the same qualities get applied to everyone in that group. That's why stereotypes exist. Try doing that with women, African-Americans, etc. and that logic doesn't work.

Avon UK has teamed up with the charity Refuge to help tackle domestic violence.

Avon global ambassador, Hollywood actress Reese Witherspoon, will host a press conference at the House of Commons on 2 December to show her support.

The Four Ways campaign calls on people to speak out against domestic violence.

It encourages people to sign a petition, which asks the government to provide more domestic violence services. According to Avon, one in three local authorities do not provide any domestic violence services.

Celebrities who are backing the campaign include Lorraine Kelly, Betty Jackson, Fiona Bruce, Helen Mirren, Ruby Wax and Jo Brand.

Consumers can download a poster to display in their local area to raise support. Avon is selling a necklace to help raise money for the charity.

Avon has supported Refuge for the last two years and has raised around £4m for the charity.

Sandra Horley, chief executive of Refuge, said: ‘Every week up to two women are killed by a current or former partner and 10 more commit suicide as their only way to escape abuse.’

Jake is booked to do Jimmy Kimmel on 12/3. He will probably do the LA Brothers premiere on 12/1. To bad the Chin will be in the UK. Does this mean she's missing the opportunity to do the red carpet and then the after party with Jake? I'm surprised. If we don't get a Reeke photo op weekend this weekend, then for sure we'll get one the following weekend when the Chin is back in LA. It's been a while since they did a photo op, she must be in withdrawal, the few she's done the past few weeks must have been quick fixes for her.

Reese wouldn't be at the LA premiere anyway. After party - maybe, but I doubt it.

Jake and Reese have never done the red carpet together, ever. ven when they went to the Vanity fair party. Jake tagged along for the PR v=for MVA overseas but never did the red carpet with her. The L.A. premiere, the same and he was in L.A. at the time. She was at the Peoples choice awatds, and no Jake, but they met up afterwards.

Yet after all that, you got you undies in a knot over a possible appearence. It ain't happening even if she wasn't going to the UK. Jake hasn't even been confirmed for the L.A. appearence.

As for the lack of pap pics, I take it as that they were both working back to back and the lack of paps in PA. Twitter is the new phase.

She has a contract with Avon, she goes where they send her, last year it was Japan and Brazil.

PS: I read some comments on ONTD yesterday on some BI : They guessed K. Stewert and Pattison for the B I. Anyway Jake and Reese came up and someone claimed that Jake took Reese to meet his relatives in Bryn M, in PA , aunts, uncles, coisins several tomes. Claims he did the same with Kiki. If teue it must have happened while filming for both

Anonymous said...

I read those comments on ONTD also. The writer was using that as an example of why they thought that Jake was straight and Reeke was real. They also said that Jake visits the family about 5 times a year and Papa G goes back all the time. They said the family is laid back and that if Jake was gay it would have been known for years already. They also reasoned that why would Jake take a beard to meet his family, he would only do that if she was a serious girlfriend.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Jake is not gay, but I think he's bi. He definitely wasn't just platinic friends with Austin. Maybe it was just trying it out and having some fun. Who knows?

Anonymous said...

8:05 PM, unfortunately I doubt Reeke will end anytime soon.

An Invictus screening begins in 28 minutes (i.e., 6:30 pm) so I don't have time to write anything about my chat yesterday afternoon with Crazy Heart costar Maggie Gyllenhaal. Okay, I can repeat the general feeling out there that her performance as a 30ish single mom who falls in love with Jeff Bridges' roly-poly alcoholic country music star is a quiet, unforced, true-heart thing. More lived-in than "performed." A supporting standout, in the view of most I've spoken to.

Gyllenhaal also has the most beautiful eyes I've been close to in a long time. There's something extra-vivid about them live, more so than they are on film. The last time I saw eyes this deep-blue intense was when I got close to Elizabeth Taylor at a Manhattan party in the early '80s.

I shot some video of our discussion but it's taking forever to load and convert. Later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Throw in the names of Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and 10-year-old Bailee Madison in the list of contenders for acting prizes in this awards season. The four gave top-rate performances in the film “Brothers,” Jim Sheridan’s remake of a 2004 Danish drama with the same title that was co-written and directed by Susanne Bier.

Tobey, a competent actor who has yet to earn major acting nominations, may finally turn things around with his portrayal of Sam Cahill, a straight-arrow brother and Marine captain whose helicopter is shot down in Afghanistan.

Listen, this is the thing about George Clooney: He did the studio trip when he first became famous from TV's E.R, but it didn't work out so well.

Batman And Robin is the worst Batman movie ever made — in which Clooney is upstaged by his Batman nipple suit. Besides providing fodder for self-deprecating one-liners, the bomb of a film provided Clooney with a jarring reminder back then that playing with other people's studio money can be a dangerous Hollywood game.

After that humbling debacle, Clooney started positioning himself as a guy who takes control of his commerce and his craft. And guess what? He's a movie star with a decent bank account and an Oscar statue he can show folks while lounging at his Italian villa.

The formula that rejuvenated Clooney is not that complicated. It goes like this: If the film is one of his personal projects, he only makes a profit if the film does, and if it's a studio deal, he makes sure everybody's happy with his or her percentage. "Listen, this is the thing," says Clooney during a recent interview. "If the movie makes money, I make money. If I don't, I've still made the movie I wanted to make."

So far, his philosophy has yielded many more pluses than minuses.

There's the lucrative Ocean's Eleven trilogy, which gave him the security and the confidence to produce, direct and co-star in the multiple Oscar-honoured Good Night, and Good Luck — the same phase in which he won the supporting-actor Oscar for his heralded Syriana role. His Michael Clayton film earned Clooney another Academy Award nomination, helped Tilda Swinton pick up a supporting-actress statue, and established Clooney as a thespian who enjoys the rare combination of box-office clout and critical acclaim.

George said...

Which brings us to Up In The Air opening Dec. 4 in Toronto and throughout Canada later in the month. The Jason Reitman film profiles a corporate downsizer (Clooney), who escapes home life by constantly travelling to his assignments to lay off employees. His first-class, frequent-flyer facade unravels when two traumatic things happen: His boss (Jason Bateman) hires a perky, fresh-out-of-college know-it-all (Anna Kendrick), who has a plan to fire folks online. And Clooney's road warrior falls for a fellow corporate traveller (Vera Farmiga), who seems to share his avoidance syndrome while banking miles.

Mixing satire with romance and a little bit of melodrama, Up In The Air is a delicate balance, but Reitman says Clooney's just about perfect for the part of the seemingly confident bachelor with commitment problems. That was, of course, Clooney before his relationship with Italian girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, but even the 48-year-old actor acknowledges the similarities.

"The film certainly addresses certain things that were in my life," says Clooney, "and there were some parts I find a little harrowing. "And," adds the actor who can't resist, "I am the same height as he is."

Fact or fiction or a little bit of both, Up In The Air is another Oscar-calibre tour de force for Clooney and Reitman, who previously received great notices and an Oscar nod for his directorial efforts on Juno. In the tradition of sharing the praise, Clooney maintains Reitman was "perceptive and thorough," while Reitman says Clooney's all about the film and not about himself: "He's an actor who thinks like a director.”

Clooney also thinks like a survivor, who made it later in life after struggling with bit parts in silly shows, some of them famous, such as The Facts of Life, and some obscure of them obscure, such as The Return of the Killer Tomatoes. "Look, everything is luck," says Clooney, a mantra he's been uttering for 20 years. "Everything that we do is luck, and the truth of the matter is that I ended up on a television show (E.R.) that was averaging 40 million people a week."

That's double what a top-rated show receives these days. "So numbers like E.R. make you famous, no matter what you do," Clooney continues. "It was an overnight thing after 12 years of doing really bad television for a long period of time."

Ever the quipster, Clooney changes the subject quickly to People's sexiest-man-ever contest, before Johnny Depp was named the latest winner. "Listen, Matt (Damon) was very competitive with both Brad (Pitt) and myself," notes Clooney, pretending to smirk. "Now Brad and me are both two-time Sexiest Men Alivers. Matt's only won it that one time, and I consider it a bit of a fluke. "Having seen him recently," his buddy says of Damon, "he's got a lot of work to do if he wants to get it back."

It's too funny, some fans on IHJ are pissed that Tobey goes for lead and Jake for supporting. Even comparing it to how ufair it was that Heath was lead, Jake supporting. Truth is that critics prefered Heath and if they had to choose between two leads for actor awards they'd have chosen Heath in all probablility. Jake had more chances in supporting category and even won a Bafta. Some of the fans shouldn't be arrogant, they should be happy if Jake gets a supporting nom for Brothers, which isn't too likely either. First people need to see Brothers and see who is lead and who supporting and how their performances are before judging. I'm sure one fine day Jake will be up for best actor too.

I haven't seen IHJ but IMO, the Academy needs to STOP choosing leads by gender. For example, Jake and Heath were both leads in BBM, not lead/supporting. If either of their roles was played by a female then the other would be named in the leading actor category and the female's in the leading actress category, period. But because it was 2 males?! It had to be lead and supporting?? IMO that's bullshit. Take another example - "Saving Private Ryan" - only 1 woman in the entire movie, and she had maybe 2 minutes of screen time - but technically she could have been nommed for best actress. WTF? It all goes back to the assumption that everyone is hetero and all movies are stories with a male and female. More bullshit.

Until AMPAS and moviegoers stop taking the male/female roles/awards for granted and assuming that all stories are hetero love stories and/or have to feature both genders in lead roles, the lopsidedness of nominations and the obvious distaste and dismissal of roles different than the norm and the actors who portray them, won't change. AMPAS needs to nom people on their acting, not their gender.

But Jake had more chances going supporting. If they were both up to leading actor, judging by the reviews, they'd probably have chosen Heath. I'm glad Jake was put in supporting, he had much more realistic chances to win and he did. He was the best in his category.

I personally think in this case they did well. But I agree, some choices who's lead who supporting are questionable.

Brothers - we need to see the film before we can discuss the quality of their performances and if Jake's rather a co-lead or a supporting actor.
