Not sure about Jake because Brothers is a film where all three stars have equal weight. Anyway, Jake isn't going to be nominated so why worry.
Time Magaizne gave Brothers a positive review. And the movie is currently on 7.8 on imdb. I think most people in the US didn't see the original, so they watched it unbiased. Many critics seem biased because they've seen the original and prefered it. Though many seem to agree that the performances are good.
I also think that was an exceptionally underrated performance in an otherwise 'meh' film.
I think that will be the final verdict - Jake's very good/great role in not so great movie.
It's a good movie with good performances. However, the praise on maguire is really exagerated. I guess if you love overacting you'll love it otherwise...
I prefer nat, Jake and bailee. They give more subtil and varied compositions.

Here is a review from Kimberley Gadette who didn't like the movie that much but on the performance ,she summarizes what I said :
"Of the three leads, Gyllenhaal gives us the most varied performance, from his natural, easy charm with Grace and the girls, to a fierce fraternal love, to the wounded child raging within. Portman does a credible job as Grace, but the script doesn't allow her to stray far from the dutiful wife and mother.
Of the three, it is Maguire who disappoints. As directed by Jim Sheridan, Maguire swings from good guy to twisted, POW boy. Once he crosses over the line, he's locked into that land – bug-eyed, overwrought, all but foaming at the mouth. We've seen many more shades of Maguire, even in the Spiderman series. Particularly since director Sheridan has a substantial number of film accolades to his credit (eg, In America, In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot), it is puzzling that he would have directed his lead actor into taking such broad strokes.
Ironically, and probably not intended, the focus is far more compelling when we spend screen time with another pair of siblings (Sam's young daughters Isabelle and Maggie, played respectively by Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare). Geare's Maggie lights up the screen with a frank, giggly charm. But it is in Madison's performance that we witness the depth of a budding actress, rivaling the talents of a young Anna Paquin and DakotaFanning"

Has anyone ever remade a film that you absolutely love?
OT but what if you see the original of a remake that you love? I love You've Got Mail. Then I saw The Little Shop Around the Corner, the original made in 1940. It was awful! The dialogue is terrible and the movie is so slow but what really bothered me was it was set in Budapest, the characters are all Americans, and they all speak with British accents (except for Jimmy Stewart who has a twang). WTF?!! Idk sometimes the remakes are 100x better IMO especially with those old awful movies.

I think Portman was wonderful as a teenage actress — in “The Professional,” of course (her breakout, and still her best role), but also in “Beautiful Girls” and “Heat” as well. But she’s had the same problem that Leonardo DiCaprio had (and still has, despite his permanent stubble, and Martin Scorsese’s best efforts) making the transition to grown-up parts.
Like Leo, she looks younger than she is, and the qualities that made her appealing in teenage roles (a kind of luminous transparency, above all) make her hard to take seriously when she plays a stripper, or a terrorist, or a scheming Ann Boleyn — or, in this case, an army wife and mother of two. As Stevens says, she may technically strike the right notes, but you never quite believe in the adult emotions that are supposed to be roiling her inside.
Tellingly, just as DiCaprio’s best role in the last decade was as a charming man-child in “Catch Me If You Can,” Portman’s best turn was playing the manic pixie dream girl in Zach Braff’s “Garden State.”

As to your question … well, it’s complicated.
Sure, we all can tell stories about people we know that are exactly as you describe your own family. They make for good stories, but it’s all anecdotal and tells us nothing real. Whether or not gayness runs in families, there are always going to be some families with a lot of gay individuals through just sheer random chance.
So what do we know that’s real? Well, there are a zillion studies about the sexual orientations of the children raised by gay parents (which are no more, or possibly only slightly more, likely to be gay than the children raised by heterosexuals). But there are no studies that I know of about the (possibly) closeted parents of openly gay kids.
Still, homosexuality almost certainly has some genetic component, at least for some people. After all, identical twins share exactly the same genes, and they’re much more likely to both be gay than fraternal twins, who are only as genetically similar as any two brothers (although they share the same prenatal and early environment).
But from these same twin studies, we also know that there’s more to homosexuality than just genes – not all identical twins are both gay, after all. In other words, environment always plays some role (but this still doesn’t mean there’s any element of “choice” in sexual orientation – people don’t choose their environment, especially their prenatal one, any more than they choose their genes!).
So: homosexuality definitely runs in families. But here’s the thing: other research indicates that the gene may reside in the mother’s “X” chromosome, meaning the gay gene is stronger on the maternal side than the paternal one.
Confusing all this, of course, is what you hint at, Logan: how do you measure “gayness”? By self-reporting? Sure, that’s one way, but is it “accurate” in a society that still has such a stigma around homosexuality? Those twin studies I mentioned above? In at least one of them, a significant number of the “straight” brothers happened to be priests – which suggests to me that maybe they were just gay and in denial.
Other researchers have determined “gayness” by measuring actual gay arousal – by measuring penis reaction to erotic gay imagery – but there are problem with this approach too, not to the least of which is the fact that plenty of subjects won’t submit to that, biasing the results.
Whew! Like I said, this is all very complicated. And I haven’t mentioned the fact that gayness may run in families for reasons entirely unrelated to genetics!
So in the end, all we’re left with is the stories we tell each other about the families we know. Anyone got any good ones?

It always makes me wonder when critics santicmoniously comment about a PTSD portrayed in this film as "histrionic". It's minimizing to something serious. Unless they have actual experience with it, they don't have a clue. As a wise person once said "you don't know how bad it gets".

Toothy Tile Coming Out?
In totally non-shocking Hollywood couple news: Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal broke up.
Reese told InStyle in October, “We spend the weekends outside L.A, in Ojai, where I have a farmhouse. We have chickens and we grow cucumbers and tomatoes. I love it.” Translation? Reese has been spending her weekends in Ojai growing cucumbers and Jake has been in West Hollywood with his (ahem) “good friend” Austin Nichols.
Reese and Jake were first rumored to be a couple after co-starring in Rendition back in 2007, right after Reese split from ex-husband Ryan Phillippe.
Translation? Their relationship was a publicists’ construct from the get because it was good for both of their careers at the time. Reese needed a publicity boost after Ryan Phillippe left her for Abbie Cornish, and Jake Gyllenhaal needed a beard because, well, he’s gay. There’s been a Hollywood MEGA rumor for ages that Jake is gay. And not a minor rumor, I mean, like a have you heard Lindsay Lohan does drugs-type no shit Sherlock rumor. There have been plenty of Blind Vices from Ted Casablanca’s The Awful Truth about Jake under the code name “Toothy Tile”. If you need to get up to speed, check out blinditemsexposed. On the topic of being caught by a pap and a media outlet keeping it quiet in exchange for favors: the one who gets caught doesn't necessarily have to be the one who gets bartered. Talent brokers have more than 1 horse in their stable; the price for 1 champion wreaking havoc might be 3 fine fillys running in a dog race.
The most pleasant surprise of this awards season would have to be Scott Cooper's country music drama Crazy Heart (Fox Searchlight) starring Jeff Bridges as alcoholic country legend Bad Blake, as he drives across country trying to make ends meet. The movie was picked up by Searchlight less than a month ago, maybe hoping to save face this award season after their previous attempt Amelia tanked. Bridges' haggard performance as the country legend is amazing, on par with Mickey Rourke's in last year's The Wrestler, plus Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a moving performance as the younger single woman who gets Bad to change his life. We expect both of them to get nominations, plus the movie has a fantastic soundtrack, so expect at least one of the original songs to get into that tough category. Any other nomination will be icing on the cake, but Bridges is the most likely to give Morgan Freeman a run for Best Actor this year.

I'm not one who is delusional as some fangirls/boys and babblers. I know Jake will never be the type of actor like DDL, JD or Sean Penn, but he's solid and if the role is right he can be very good. Instead of being jealous of Jake's colleagues who received/receive more praise then him (if you read the babble blog, they still can't get over that HL got more praise for a movie that is 5 years old!!!), they should hope that Jake delivers again and that the consensus of critics will be that he's award worthy.

Madhur Bhandarkar had shot a gay kissing sequence in a car between Samir Soni and his screen lover for Fashion and deleted it even before it went to the censor board. But for his film I Am Omar, Onir is determined to keep the first gay love-making scene between the ever-adventurous Rahul Bose and the upcoming Arjun Mathur (seen in Zoya Akhtar’s Luck By Chance and Farhan Akhtar’s short film on AIDS, Positive).
Onir feels the sensitive sequence may be unnecessarily sensationalised but has to be retained because the film doesn’t work without it. Explains Onir, “Arjun plays a sex worker. So we couldn’t do away with the physical aspect of the gay issue.”
The sequence has the actors making out in a public place. Abhimanyu Singh (seen in Anurag Kashyap’s Gulal) plays a homophobic cop who chances on the couple and harasses them. Says Onir, “Luckily none of my actors had any inhibitions. Rahul and Arjun did the scene which goes much beyond anything seen in Indian cinema. They behaved like thorough professionals.” Now he hopes the censor board would be just as professional. While Rahul, who had done Indian cinema’s first and only gay gangrape sequence in Bom-gay, refrains from comment, Arjun who wants to explore the dark side of sexuality, says, “For me as an actor it is always challenging to see what lies beneath the calm exteriors. I had absolutely no inhibitions playing the gay character and doing the kissing sequence with Rahul. I wondered what it would feel like. But it was done clinically and professionally.”
Adds Onir, “We haven’t taken any still pictures of the kissing because we don’t want it leaked out on the net. The whole idea is to look at the question of homosexuality in a proper perspective and not to highlight any specific aspect of it.” Onir’s film I Am (of which I Am Omar is one part) now goes to Rotterdam Film Festival.

I think the fauxmance will end the same way that it started. First we had rumours that they were together, then the obligatory holding hands photos etc. It was never like "boom" they were instantly together. There was just a steady PR build up, IIRC.
Maybe that's how it will end (from the public's perspective). The rumour has been put out there now that things are "shakey". I doubt we will see them photographed together, or on just a few occasions until the whole showmance dies off a slow death. By that I mean there will be no "announcement". There will just be a lack of photos or twitters of them together, until it drops off to zero.
