Asked about his trim physique, he attributed his newfound interest in the gym to the image-conscious exhortations of Tom Ford, who directed him in (and wrote the screenplay for) the forthcoming film “A Single Man.”

“He told me I looked good, but I’d look better if I had a personal trainer,” Mr. Firth explained.

Perhaps the conversation went a bit differently. “I told him he was fat,” Mr. Ford recalled later.

I loled at this! Thanks for sharing 10:08!

In all fairness, Donnie Darko was a box office flop...and look at it now....a cult film people are still talking about.

Brothers said...

Based on the fact that 'The Blind Side' and 'New Moon' was playing in more theatres than 'Brothers', it is not surprising it came in third. That was probably expected, I don't think it will make that much more money in North America, with all the holiday movies being released over the next several weeks.

And I think that's a shame, it's a fantastic movie, beautifully acted by everyone in the film, especially Tobey and the two young girls. Jake was good, the scene at the end with him and Tobey will have you on the edge of your seat.

In all the barrage of arguments, I think the comment that Austin is wearing the ring again got lost. Quite a coincidence among the "break up" hoopla. I'm waiting to see what more Ted is going to spring on us about Toothy. He promised more to come.

Damn, everything has to be so complicated with Jake - some people think Brothers is a great movie, some think it sucks.

Anonymous said...

I am not 5:26 but saw the movie too.
Intense movie, maybe a bit cliche sometimes but overall powerful.
Great performances from all the actors.Jake and the little girls bring a lot of natural and nuances in their interpretations. I loved that. nat is good too. Tobey has the showy character but I didn't completely buy his performance. he tries too much in some scenes.

Brothers said...

Personally I think he did a fantastic job, they way he played off those two little girls was fantastic.

Not to get into too much but the scene after Grace and Tommy kiss, you could really feel Tommy grieving for the loss of his brother, the person he was probably closest to in the world.

And the scene at the house after the birthday party gone wrong: WOW!

On my personal ranking, I think it's one of Jake's top 5 performances. I don't think it will get him an Oscar nomination. Tobey would deserve it more, this really is his film.

I agree with you about Jake! Like I said I am more mixed on Tobey.

Tommy in jail? Is Tommy very different from Jake's previous roles?

Anonymous said...

There are not many reviews up for Brothers on RT. Why didn't more critics review it?

Anonymous said...

If this wasn't a remake critics wouldn't be so hard on it I think.

I watched Infernal Affairs and Departed and I personally found IA to be better. Yet, critics praised Departed to be a masterpiece. Why? Probably because most of them are Scorsese fanboys.

Anonymous said...

Studio asked them not to post reviews, so maybe they decided not to write one.

Anonymous said...

What? How did my dysfunctional family get in the movie?

Anonymous said...

"Tommy in jail? Is Tommy very different from Jake's previous roles?"

He is the lost soul, the "villain duck" of the family who want redemption. He is bad ass and vulnerable in same time. This role is more mature!

Brothers said...

All you really see of Tommy in jail is at the beginning.... where he is getting released, and Sam picks him up. Tommy robbed a bank and held a gun on a teller. Tobey's character Sam, asks Tommy if he is going to apologize to the woman. Tommy doesn't respond, but after Sam "dies", he tells Grace he apologized to the woman. And then she had him open up a bank account, lol!

Anonymous said...

LOL at the same bank?!

Unless she changed banks while he was in jail, yep :)

Anonymous said...

Can a convicted then released bank robber open a checking account at the same bank he knocked over?!! Would he be allowed on the premises, even after he's done his time?

Anonymous said...

Only if he promises to be a good boy ;)

Anonymous said...

When Shepard and Gyllenhaal appear in a scene together, the air around them is charged -- it's as if the searching, vulnerable quality in Tommy's eyes registers as a taunt in the manly-man world of his father. The chemistry is a lot less charged, unfortunately, between Gyllenhaal and Portman.

Before continuing this review, be forewarned. Brothers is a brutal film. There is traditional war violence, but even more violent is the anguish. The film is so depressing that I had to play a round of Dance Dance Revolution in the theater lobby before I could stop crying and compose myself long enough to write this review.

What really makes this film wonderful, however, is the acting. The scenes involving the children are both adorable and poignant, with Bailee Madison delivering an especially good performance as older sibling Isabelle (most notably in a scene at the dinner table where she confronts Sam about himself, Tommy, and Grace). Gyllenhaal goes from being a sullen, drunk parolee to a model of stability and fun in a very believable and likeable way. Portman is terrific as Grace, subtly portraying the emotional process of a grieving and subsequently healing widow of a man who isn’t actually dead.

All of these performances are fantastic. But the one who absolutely deserves a Best Actor nomination is Tobey Maguire, as he reaches extreme emotional depths as Sam. His character’s development happens slowly, but extremely powerfully. It is impossible not to empathize with him, even as he unwillingly destroys a fellow soldier and willingly destroys his own house and family. If there was ever a poster performance for PTSD, it is Maguire as Sam.

By next weekend when Brothers is totally forgotten and dying at the box office we'll get a nice big Reeke photo op. Reeke has been written about this much in many, many months. By next weekend they can stroll hand and hand so the rag mags can spend another week writing about how they patched things up because they are so in love and (still LMAO) so powerfully attracted to each other. The whole thing was a desperate PR stunt that totally overshadowed all of Jake's interviews. Reeke PR was supposed to help Jake how? All the breakup stories talk about Reeke and how wonderful and patient Reese is, but none of them mention Jake's new film. So all this Reeke breakup did is create PR for Reese and make Jake look even more pussy whipped. Way to go Jake!

Jake is showering his co stars with compliments this time.
I know he and Natalie are friends since they were very young, but I think he and Tobey were just acquaintances before Brothers. I think only after the film they became friends. They all seem comfortable with each other. So, I believe the real life friendship of the cast this time.

I hope after the weekend more reviews will be added and hopefully positive ones.

Dream on. The movie is a piece of phony Hollywood recycled melodrama that is inferior to the original. It is deservedly going to fade away. To be replaced by the drama of Reeke. Jake is an entertainer more than an actor, so that's how he has to keep himself relevant - by entertaining us. That's what matters and he knows it. Embarrassing, really. Jake and his pr came up with the merkin story as a way to 'take charge' and show he is one-up on the rumors. Jake's always been like that. He's a joker and seems to like dirty jokes. Probably grabbing Heath's ass (seems he had many liberties with him) at that photocall was a joke too or grabbing Chin's ass at that music festival.
His jokes probably aren't everyone's cup of coffee though.

My observation re. Jake, Nat and Tobey. Even though Jake and Natalie are long-time friends, I don't see a particular chemistry or real bond. I don't doubt they get along and are buddies though. I think he is getting along with Tobey too, but again, I don't see chemistry.
Jake has good chemistry with RDJ and Anne Hathaway, had great chemistry with Heath (duh!), even though he didn't know them that long before shooting of their respective movies begun. Some reviewers complained about the lack of chemistry between Jake and Nat, but I think his chemisty with Anne will be better. Just a feeling. It doesn't matter how long you know someone, it's whether you klick or not what matters.

Reese talks about being hurt on Jonathan Ross, Dec 3

"I think I broke my foot. I’m not sure, I haven’t had a scan yet. I was taking a nap yesterday because I was real tired, I had jet lag. You know when your foot falls asleep… Then I stood up. Someone called me on the phone and I went to answer the phone, and I said, ‘Oh I tripped over my shoe or something!’ I looked down and it was my foot I had tripped over! Ron Livingston's Stupid Lawsuit to Stop Wikipedia From Calling Him a Fag

Ron Livingston, who ruined Sex and the City for nearly a season by playing whiny Jack Berger, is suing an anonymous Wikipedia author who keeps updating Livingston's stub to say he's not only A Gay, but A Gay who is dating someone named Lee Dennison. Livingston married a woman, Standoff co-star Rosemarie DeWitt, earlier this year, and professes to be happily heterosexual. But he's losing sleep at night knowing Wikipedia keeps saying he's a homo, so he's filing libel, privacy invasion, and unauthorized usage of his likeness charges against the as-yet-unidentified Internet prankster. This lawsuit is stupid for so many reasons.
1) Courts have stopped ruling that being called gay — whether you are or are not — is defamation. Because, despite what Tom Cruise wants, allowing gay rumors to qualify as libel is akin to saying being gay is somehow ruinous. But ask Rupert Everett for a second opinion.

2) Livingston is suing an anonymous Internet lurker, who is probably some reject kid having a good laugh. Or maybe a spurned ex-girlfriend. Or ex-boyfriend! The lawsuit claims that the editing, which began in May, re-appears every time Livingston's camp corrects the Wiki entry. Rather than identifying who keeps updating his Wiki page, what he probably actually wants is a court injunction to force Wikipedia to block unauthorized updates to his page. But Wikipedia is a website that enjoys wide legal protections because it allows anyone to edit its entries without moderation, which frees it from most defamation arguments. And unless the judge is a wild banshee who craps on the First Amendment, nobody sitting on a court bench wants to be the guy delivering government-sanctioned censorship by telling Wikipedia what it can and cannot publish.

3) Most stupidly, by filing a lawsuit, Livingston just guaranteed that his Wikipedia page will, soon enough, permanently include the rumors of his gayness because it will note that he filed a lawsuit to stop them, and that is an irrefutable fact, which Wikipedia's independent editors will no doubt seek to include from here unto eternity.

Jake & Reese: Unhappy Holidays

The couple of two years spend Thanksgiving Day apart as they reach the breaking point.

More than 40 guests joined IM for a Thanksgiving feast at her L.A. home. But as she counted her blessings, she couldn't count Jake Gyllenhaal among them. Her boyfriend of two years was a no-show, and multiple sources confirm they've split.

"Everyone was told not to mention his name," a Thanksgiving guest tells Star. "She's not ready to talk about it yet." Though Reese put on a happy face, singing with friends at the piano, inside she was heartbroken. "We were all sad for her," says the source. "Thanksgiving is such a family holiday and we all know Reese just wants to be part of a close family unit again."

Reese, 33, thought she'd found that with Jake, 28. But in recent weeks, says the source, "she'd been saying that he seemed distant."

Jake has always gotten along with Ava, 10, and Deacon, 6, IM's kids with Ryan Phllippe. But a second insider says, "he isn't ready to be tied down. He wants to get married one day, but he felt like Reese was pushing him into it. He got freaked out and said he wasn't ready for such a commitment."

The couple finally had it out after Thanksgiving, and Jake told her he needed a break. Says the source, "They had a huge fight. Reese was crying and devestated, but Jake was insistent that they take time apart." And on Nov 29, he sent his assistant to remove two suitcases of belongings form her home."

That was the worst fanfic ever, worst than People and Us put together!! They even used the X17online "story" about the suitcase, of course they couldn't source them because the site which is a pap site failed to take pics or video, LOL!!!

But I thought that he was the one pushing for marriagea and wantd to settle down, or was that People, or Ok?? Or the Us fanfic about them being happy as clams and People is full of shit?

Boy Jake and Reese's PR sure had fun last week planting all these BS stories even involving those assholes at X17, and then deny it after just for some cheap Pr for Brothers. Jake announcement was a nice touch I have to admit.

I sure hope you read that while standing on line at Walmart PG, i hope you didn't actually by that. If you did you can always use it as toilet paper.

LOL!!! Thanks to tweets and other sources we now know that rags don't need to work hard, all they need is a nudge from PR and then they just lurk. Even People does it, they used a tweet about Reese in Nashville on Sunday and used in their story on the stand. And I refuse to believe that someone coincidently saw her in Nashville at the same restauraunt, they got it from the tweet.

What rubbish

Wait, whut? After Jake doing about 7 marriage proposals, giving approximately 5 engagement rings and postponing at least 3 secret weddings?!!

he sent his assistant to remove two suitcases of belongings form her home."

Suitcases labeled "Trips with Reese" that contained his self-sex toys for hours of solitary enjoyment. Oh and ear plugs too for the times he had to accompany her shopping, dining, yoga-ing....

Not the OP but IMO it kinda was..not as PR for Brothers exactly but to guarantee that Jake would avoid any questions or normally expected references of Reese, their family life, etc. during press interviews. And it did help - he didn't tell any lies or have to conjure up a false story about her. Btw IMO he said "girl friend".

I think Jake didn't want Reeke crap during his Brothers spotlight. His PR instructed interviewers not to ask personal questions - Jake did not need People magazine story to avoid Reeke questions.

I'll believe Grazia Australia Jake quotes ONLY after some other more reliable source confirms it - there is no reason to believe Australian or any other tabloid, and press conference wasn't held just for Grazia.

Tommy at first seems a malingering loser, blaming his situation on everyone but himself — his stern father (Sam Shepard) and even Sam, who loves him and sticks up for him — and when Sam is reported dead, Tommy typically thinks he's the center of the tragedy. But Gyllenhaal slowly works his way out of the viewer's suspicions; and Portman shows us a devastated woman in need a man to ease her solitude and warm her heart.

Maguire, in hero roles like Spidey or indie dramas like this, has always been a thoughtful, watchful actor whose giant eyes seem to be monitoring humans from outer space. Sam's eyes see horrible things in Afghanistan, and when he comes home he sees something even more threatening: two people in love, and one his wife. As in some science-fiction parable, here it's the children who sense a mutation in their daddy — to them he's now he's an alien creature — a foreboding that is complicated by their growing affection for Tommy. Sheridan has shown before, especially in his semi-autobiographical In America, his gift for directing children, and he gets wonderfully complex shadings from the two girls, Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare. It's the kids who trigger the movie's painful denouement, where Sam realizes that his searing guilt doesn't fit in a home that was happy until he returned to it.

Nathaniel over at The Film Experience just published a post discussing the potential confusion over a few Oscar contenders whose performances may be confused for lead performances when they are actually supporting and vice versa. His list, however, doesn't include one I just watched yesterday, but first for his…

Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds
Anthony Mackie in The Hurt Locker
Woody Harrelson in The Messenger
Christian McKay in Me and Orson Welles
Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers

I don't think he needs to worry much about Melanie Laurent or Brad Pitt, both of which are obviously supporting if you ask me. Or Jake Gyllenhaal, although I wouldn't mind seeing Gyllenhaal get a nod for Brothers considering I thought his was the best performance in it… but for what category? Lionsgate has placed him in the Best Supporting Actor category, but in reality all three (Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman) are co-leads in that film if anything, which could cause voting confusion.

Melanie laurent ??? her performances isn't significant enough for a nod, even not a supporting nod!

Peter Waltz though, is perfect!

Re. 7:44 PM's post. Yes it's what Star rag says, but in some German gossip rags they were saying this all along that Jake didn't want commitment and that it was her who was pushing marriage. I think I mentioned this a couple of times here. In the end, though, no one knows what the real deal is with Reeke.

We know what the real deal is with Reeke :)

I'm feeling very mellow about the dread topic of 'category fraud' this year. I guess the Academy's refusal to ignore that "supporting" call on Kate Winslet in The Reader last time around gave me hope that other people are over it now that it's egregious misuse has become such a regular occurence. At any rate, there's always been a fine line for some roles between what we'd define as "supporting" and "lead". I'd love to know your opinion of the following roles and where you'd place them if you'd never heard a thing about "campaigns"

•Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds
•Anthony Mackie in The Hurt Locke
•Woody Harrelson in The Messenger
•Christian McKay in Me and Orson Welles
•Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers

If you've seen the movies, I hope you'll help me with these tiebreaker cases.

Has anyone ever remade a film that you absolutely love? It can be odd to remove yourself from the familiar original while watching the shiny and new. Presumably not many people will have this problem with BROTHERS though I’ll admit up front that I did. This new war-at-home drama is adapted from a little seen Danish film of the same name. Natalie Portman plays Grace Cahill, a young mother and wife whose husband Sam (Tobey Maguire) has been assumed dead in Afghanistan. We know that he actually survived but Grace doesn’t and in the fog of grief discovers budding feelings for her brother-in-law Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), an ex-con, who begins to bloom when he takes over as man of the house. When Sam returns from war, with post traumatic stress problems, serious complications, tears and family drama arrive with him.

While it's heartening to see filmmakers still dealing with America during wartime (even if audiences aren’t exactly responding) and to see talented actors push themselves, the film plays a bit too histrionically to achieve the emotional force it’s going for with the family meltdown. I kept drifting back to the far superior original, which trusted the audience to watch for tiny shifts of feeling in all three of the main characters. Little earthquakes can be devastating.

Portman recently (and accurately) stated at a press conference: "I remember Jim [Sheridan] describing the Danish film as a woman's fantasy movie. Two hot guys wanting you and you love both of them." That's a reductive if enticing description but it's the picture I was hoping to see again and one you should definitely rent on DVD.
