One Gay at a Time

Page Six today has a not-very-thinly-veiled item about Anderson Cooper going on a very gay vacation with his very gay boyfriend who owns a very gay bar. Enough: Anderson Cooper is very gay. It's time he said it.

Anderson Cooper's see-through closet is such a joke that it doesn't make sense to call him in the closet anymore. If he won't say it, we will: Anderson Cooper is officially out. There's no difference between him and Neil Patrick Harris. They both play it straight at their day jobs and then openly go about town with their boyfriends and do TV interviews about how much they love Kathy Griffin and The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

It's not like Cooper's in a club all of his own, either. He is part of an increasingly large crowd of notables who won't come out but have given up trying to hide that they are gay. Queen Latifah denied that she was going to marry her girlfriend, a girlfriend who she tries to pass off as her "trainer." Kevin Spacey got busted lying about being mugged in a London cruising park. Ricky Martin has stopped even trying to fight the gay rumors. Jodie Foster has never said she's a lesbian out loud, but she basically came out when she thanked her partner in an acceptance speech.

These gay-not-gay celebrities are different from the Hugh Jackmans, John Travoltas, Tom Cruises, and Kenny Chesneys, who are all constantly plagued with gay rumors that they strenuously try to deny or deflect. If they're gay, they're doing it in secret. Cooper and his set of cohorts live openly gay lives — and that's a good thing — but they refuse to acknowledge what the public already knows.

In Anderson Cooper's specific case, we sort of understand why he won't open his mouth and let the rainbows fly. All the guy has ever wanted to do was be an old-fashioned newsman and unfortunately him coming out would make him a part of the story. Every time he tried to cover something having to do with gay civil rights (or Madonna or Fire Island) plenty of people would claim that his reporting was biased because of his sexual orientation. It's not fair: Katie Couric doesn't have to worry when she covers pay inequality for women, and neither does Harry Smith when discussing new medicine that will eradicate baldness.

Coming out would open Cooper up to irrational accusations from those waiting to pounce on the "liberal media" just as quickly as A.C. pounces on his muscle man in an Indian hotel room. That sucks, but it's the way it currently is. How does it get changed? Well, by having some major national news figures come out and show that they can still get blown over in a hurricane or report live from a war zone without breaking into a anti-Prop 8 rant.

That's right, Anderson, it's going to take you to change it. Rachel Maddow has paved the way, but all the baby gays out there need you to man up and be our Jackie Robinson. The first step is the easiest, you just have to say what everyone already knows.

Jakey G and fellow hairy monster Elmo recently spent a little time together while shooting an episode of Sesame Street. Elmo might be suffering from a temporary blackout here, because it looks like Jakey is choking the hell out of him. Unless Elmo is into that sort of thing. That kinky muppet!

And "choking the Elmo" has become the phrase of the minute, because it sounds like something Prince Hot Ginge does with himself under the sheets.

Anderson Cooper Is in a LTR. But He'll Never Talk About It said...

It's more than Summer Love for Anderson Cooper! Spotted in June biking with NYC's Eastern Bloc bar owner Benjamin Maisani, it appears the pair are still going strong. Cooper, who once dated Real World's JD Ordonez, is spending part of the month in Jaipur, India, in a $3,200-a-night Rambagh Palace suite with Maisani. (Clearly, somebody there is leaking the info; Page Six reports, "Anderson's room has a large round bathtub. On the first night it was filled with bubbles and sprinkled with red rose petals.") All of this would actually be noteworth, were Cooper's sexuality much of a secret.

It's the embarrassingly obvious elephant in the room that's become a bore. As Brian Moylan notes, Cooper just wants to be a newscaster — who navigates between reporting on gay rights and chimps — and not "the gay newscaster." But by staying in the transparent closet, he continues making his sexuality a bigger issue than it has to be.

We're not saying Cooper has to be an advocate for gay rights. But we like our newscasters up front and honest. Cute and sparkly eyes don't hurt either. Cooper, meanwhile, has furnished a reputation of … let's say, a fickle lover, flitting between romantic interests. But here he is, in a long-term relationship with a fellow attractive guy, and we want that shit PUT ON DISPLAY. Instead, we'll get more gay-guy-straight-girl on-air flirting with Erica Hill.

That bit about Cooper not being able to cover certain stories if he came out is just crap. That's like saying women reporters can't cover stories about women's issues, or any minority covering issues having to do with their own community. And Rachel Maddow does just fine. If anything I find it more uncomfortable to watch Cooper cover gay issues knowing he's not completely out.

I disagree, he always seemed to respect Heath as an actor. He used to say he wasn't as hot as he used to be, but he'd still do him. Or called Hartnett a Ledger wannabe.

As for Michelle, he didn't post much about her when Heath was still alive. But yes, he used to comment sarcastically that they are looking "so happy". But it was a no brainer that they weren't happy together anyway.

12 Things You Don't Know About Upcoming Movies said...

Hollywood usually saves its best for last. And this year, the field of Best Picture nominees will be doubled to 10, which makes it more likely that when you hit the multiplex this fall, you'll see a contender. Here, a peek behind the scenes:
...
Brothers (Dec. 4)

Stage actors adhere to a playwright's words. But movie actors, more committed to the action portrayed, often change dialogue. For a dinner scene in this ensemble about a family changed by the war in Afghanistan, director Jim Sheridan remembers actors Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire talking about who would say what: "We were having a grand old time rewriting the script, when in walked Sam Shepard, who was playing the father but who, of course, is a great playwright. And Sam said, 'Isn't this a fantastic scene?' Immediately, we shut up and performed David Benioff's scene just as he wrote it."

Brothers review:

review

Not by an established movie critic though.

Brothers said...

^^^
Yesterday I experienced my very first movie screening. Brothers, expected to come out December 4th, features Natalie Portman, Tobey Macguire, and Jake Gyllenhaal. Did I mention Natalie Portman?

There was no audience. There were no previews. Accompanied by the lead-editor for WATC, the theater entertained only myself, Rich, and some girl who led the screening. She was kind of hot. At the end of the movie she asked what I thought, but I directed her to ask Rich. I was afraid I might offend the All Things Considered crew’s reputation, as she seemed pretty keen to get some feedback.

“Powerful,” he said.

Now, I’m not an established movie critic or anything, but since I have the opportunity, I figure I should give reviewing it a shot.

Sam (Macguire) is an upstanding citizen: US Marine, devout Christian, proud father, coupled with a loving wife and two healthy happy children. His brother Tommy(Gyllenhaal), recently on parole from a local bank-robbery, is a drinking, smoking, and unemployed anti-hero. When Sam is presumed dead in Afghanistan, Tommy develops a relationship with his brother’s wife, Grace (Portman), and her two daughters.

Eight months later, when Sam returns unexpectedly, things finally start to get interesting. After about an hour’s juxtaposing a romantic comedy with an Afghan imprisonment, the film reveals the powerfully emotional side of its story. Having experienced the horrors of war first-hand, Sam’s psychological trauma challenges him and his family to mend their broken relationships, forcing him – and the audience – to question Plato’s theory that only dead men have seen the end of war.

To start, let me point out that Macguire and Portman look out-of-place. Initially, I found it difficult to imagine ’Spiderman’ and ‘Queen Amidala’ in such a different context. Macguire does not look like the typified US Marine/father, and Portman looks as youthful as ever. However, this never detracts from their performances. The roles they fill are difficult, emotionally charged, and complex, but this is probably why they chose Portman and Macguire in the first place. Still, the best performance is clearly from Gyllenhaal, who seamlessly portrays the cautious yet fun-loving Uncle of Portman’s daughters.

Brothers said...

But there’s a catch.

I didn’t really like the movie.

The music (notwithstanding an integral U2 song) is uninspired and lacking. Musical montages plagued a few scenes, while a simple guitar rift and chord progression were the basis for a recurring theme. And for a movie that is trying to be emotionally powerful, they probably should have looked into something a bit more evoking. Then again, music is a fairly subjective taste. Maybe I’m just spoiled by LSO?

Also – the entire first half of the film seemed predictable: the musical montage jarred by Macguire’s capture, the children’s immediate and unreserved affection for their new Uncle Tommy, the romantic buildup between Portman and Gyllenhaal’s characters. In fact, there’s a point in the movie where Portman’s character ashamedly admits “I’m a cliché,” referring to her being a cheerleader who married a football player, but then proceeds to commit an equally heinous cliché by rebelliously smoking pot and stealing a kiss with her former husband’s brother. *Emphatic gasp* How shocking!

I don’t mean to be ungrateful, but the movie really isn’t groundbreaking. I am not a family man, and, unlike the pious Christians portrayed in the film, I have never believed that families should be forced into perfect little boxes. Not to imply I’m going to have sex with your wife if you unexpectedly disappear, but it seems fairly clear to me that relationships are organic, often troubled and complicated things. The movie, however, suggests that only psychological trauma could induce family troubles. For instance, when Sam (Macguire) discovers that his wife kissed his brother during his absence, he jumps to conclusions in a flurried rage, accusing Grace of sleeping with his brother. Though naïve white bourgeois might still believe in fairy tales, the sad truth remains that sexually jealous rage remains commonplace worldwide, and domestic violence is still very real. This fact detracts from the significance of Sam’s tortured past, and from the movie’s point. In fact, if you forget that Sam is supposedly mentally disturbed, this movie simply becomes Pearl Harbor - with a dangerously jealous boyfriend.

I would be lying if I said I hated this movie. The dialogue is fantastic. No exchange is overdone, and a lot of the best moments are wordless, spoken only through subtle gestures and the actors’ nuanced expressions. Also, the violent horrors of war coupled with the loving romantic scenes are jarring and effective – making the audience conscious of its own ignorance and apathy toward war. Finally, there is a scene – which I won’t spoil - that epitomizes the beautiful and fragile aspects of a loving relationship, finally making me tear up like a good movie should, dammit! Unfortunately, these important scenes are few and far between, leaving most of the screentime to be filled with Portman’s “daughters” and their all-too-familiar ‘cute’ routine.

The directors are right to use Plato’s “Only the dead have seen the end of war.” Macguire’s character demonstrates that his newfound inability to love his family is the existential equivalent to being dead. However, the writers seem to underemphasize what I believe is the far more powerful message: that loving someone is like being at war. That love is war.

I give Brothers a 6/10.

Jake said...

Gays have always liked Jake. On most "gay boards" the guys don't even mind him (dating ?) Reese.

That's because a lot of them are self-loathing, log-cabin Republican freepers. As long as you're hot and masculine, they don't care. But if you have too much of the whiff of gay about you or not masculine enough in their eyes (Adam Lambert), then watch out. As someone on towleroad called them, bitter old queens.

Anonymous said...

A lot of those gay men are out and proud Europeans. You can't use republican log cabin Freepers to describe them. Not everyone fit in the little boxes you've designated for them.

Anonymous said...

I didn't say "all" I said "a lot" of them. I regularly read the comments on places like towleroad, DL, etc., and it is clear most of them are American, and a lot of them have issues, as I said above. I also think there is a bit of a generational divide as to whether posters care about these things--the "this is how it has always been" vs this is 2009 and why should we put up with this anymore.

You try to navigate through this media circus and hopefully don't end up the clown." [W]

Snap Judgment: Adam Lambert, 'For Your Entertainment' said...

The first single and title track from Adam Lambert's soon-to-be-dropped debut album couldn't be more of an announcement. "For Your Entertainment" strides into the room, snaps its fingers and declares 2010 the year of Our Gorgeously Airbrushed Overlord.

With a toy whip in his hand and a glittery gleam in his eye, Glambert croons familiar phrases about making it hot, getting rough and staying in control. Scandinavian hitmaker Dr. Luke wrote and produced the track, and it has that compressed, noisy rock 'n' roll circus sound he's created for others, including Britney, Pink and that other neo-vaudevillian troublemaker, Katy Perry.

Some Glamthusiasts may bemoan the restraint (and processing) applied to the song's vocal, but Lambert is making another move in this song, one likely to become a signature. He sings with an arched eyebrow, executing a come-on that wryly takes the pffft out of itself.

As on his blockbuster-movie power ballad "Time For Miracles," Lambert practices some pop restraint at first, only really letting go at the song's three-minute mark. "Let me entertain you 'til you scream," he wails, his voice fully entering the androgynous zone. It's a game that's led from the dance floor to the bedroom: seduction as a wicked parlor trick fully enjoyed by the master and his victim, the light fantasy of dominance and submission that's a metaphor for what happens between performer and fan.

Dear Ted:
What happens to the beard in a relationship once the other has come out? Does the media trash the beard and embrace the other for coming out? I can't recall any supercelebrity couple in the past where one has come out of the closet and the other acknowledged that they were a beard.
—San Diego,Calif.

Dear Whiskers Whispers:
And don't expect it to happen anytime soon, either. Most gay celebs comfortable being out have always been comfortable not being attached to a woman, even when their sexuality was still considered a secret.

Dear Ted:
With regard to Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift, are they pulling a "Jake and Reese" or is it the real deal? Also what's the story with Josh Duhamel? Yes, he's hot, but is he a good guy or does he have many little secrets behind that gorgeous smile? Has he ever been a B.V.?
—prilc318

Dear On to Something:
Yes, Josh, has indeed been a Vice-er; where's there's tabloid headlines, there's always a little truth (always). As to Tay-Tay, you know what? I don't think they've decided. So let's not rush 'em!

There was never any supercelebrity couple in the past where one has come out of the closet.

The only supercelebrity I can think of is Elton John, but his ex-wife isn't celebrity.

Anonymous said...

Like 2:44 said, Elton. Also Cher and some bigtime record producer, can't remember his name.

Who has even come out lately?! NPH, Adam Lambert (altho it wasn't hidden). Was Michael Eisner always out? What about TV actors?

Cher was his beard?

Neil Patrick Harris once dated Ben Stiller's wife Christine Taylor, but she wasn't a beard:

"Harris revealed the heterosexual relationship during an interview with radio host Howard Stern.
He claimed the romance helped him acknowledge his sexuality.
Harris said, "She's the coolest, nicest chick ever. She's an absolute catch, and I thought, 'If I'm not going to feel the super sparks with her... it probably means I'm gay."

Jake must be ashamed of being what he is. Maybe it's better that he doesn't come out if he's that worried and self-conscious about his sexuality and what others think of him. What kind of a role model would he be?! Yeah, like the world needs more of his kind - cowards. The only thing he can contribute is being the "Don't Do This" exhibit for people both gay and hetero, to learn from.

Why Is White Collar's Matthew Bomer's Sexuality Such a Secret?

The USA Network has a certain prescription for its shows: Psych, Monk, Royal Pains, and Burn Notice all are drama-comedies with romance mixed in. They're com-rom-drams? Rom-dramedies? And for the most part, they all have a gay-ish element: On Psych, the completely hetero friendship between Gus and Sean is mixed in with bromance jokes; Burn Notice's Jeffrey Donovan is like a cable network James Bond (and we all know how gay that makes him). And new this season is White Collar, a show that follows the same USA composite: Cute lead character involved solving problems (crimes, as most of USA's shows do). And White Collar also has the gay-ish element: The leading man, Matthew Bomer's Neal Caffrey, is cute and savvy and sexually confident. But we didn't know just how much White Collar went gay. Just two episodes into the series, and we learn its headlining actor is a 'mo.

Earlier this week, the gossip blogger known for making that "faggot" remark claimed Bomer is openly gay, and in a relationship with Simon Halls (pictured, on right), the chief executive of public relations firm PMK/HBH, one of the largest and most powerful PR firms in all the land. (You might have heard their name back when PMK's then-CEO Pat Kingsley, Tom Cruise's one-time publicist, made a sport out of shooting down gay rumors.) The item was picked up by the blog Boy Culture and the kids on gossip forum Data Lounge.

Bomer, whose past credits include standard soap opera stints and a regular gig on Tru Calling, is not being outed by his own camp; the website AfterElton asked Bomer's publicist about the situation, and she replied, "No comment," and "We don't comment on any of our client's personal lives." (That's a lie. PMK regularly shoots down rumors about client Jennifer Aniston's pregnancy, as just one example.)

But then there's the evidence. Namely, photos of Bomer and another gent (not Halls) in major make-out mode. (That's him in the red.)

Matthew Bomer said...

For his part, Halls is openly gay. He and PMK co-chief Stephen Huvane, who is also gay (and a looker), exercise a level of power that, it would not be an exaggeration to say, can literally make or break someone's Hollywood career. They represent clients like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Neil Patrick Harris. Stephen's brother, Kevin Huvane, is also in the business: He's the manager agent of folks like — yup! — Jennifer Aniston. There are plentiful stories about Halls and Huvane treating Hollywood as their own fiefdom; more often than not, they are true.

So while it's pretty exciting to see a couple of gay men wielding so much influence in an industry where being gay is still a scarlet letter for actors, it's also a little frightening to see what happens when they try to use that power to shut down reports that impact them personally. Halls's camp wasn't successful in getting the gay celeb blogger to remove the item, but Boy Culture did take down the photos by "kind request." The blog Greg In Hollywood removed the photos, because "the photo is several years old and since the actor is out and in a committed relationship, I’ve decided to take it down. The request was made very politely by Bomer through friends."

But the Internet never deletes anything. The photos of Bomer kissing another fella are regularly available to anyone with a few minutes and interest to find it. And it's ridiculous to think that getting them yanked from a couple gay blogs will delete it from anyone's memory.

We can understand the position Bomer is in: He's been openly gay for much of his career, at least inside the industry, but now he's headlining a nearly-guaranteed-to-be-blockbuster series on USA, in a role that requires (female) viewers to lust after him. We won't jump to conclusions, but if history is any indicator, USA's executives (and those at parent NBC Universal) won't be too thrilled with Bomer's sexuality making headlines.

To which we say: Too late.

Or maybe Halls is just unhappy seeing the Internet flooded with pics of his current beau getting randy with another man?

Name them, 3:24. IMO many now-out actors used beards/fake dates but their coverups have been forgotten or diffused since then. My estimate is 90% of the out actors you name will have had a history of female dates at events.

Maybe. He might think it's easier NOW - although going by how he's aged 15 years in the last 3, it obviously hasn't been a walk in the park. Also, IMO what he has to think about is the longevity of bearding - living 2 separate lives might be ok for now, but it will put a strain on his patience and energy levels as he gets older. Even the best lying bigamists are eventually caught.

Also Cher and some bigtime record producer, can't remember his name."

It was David Geffen. Cher dated him when she separated from Sonny. He even went with her to the Oscars. I kid you not. Geffen has fondly recalled the time in various interviews when he was Cher's lover (before he switched over completely to men).

wikipedia said...

Geffen has an estimated net worth of $4.6 billion, making him one of the richest people in the entertainment industry.

David Geffen is openly gay. In the mid-1990s, a rumor about Geffen marrying actor Keanu Reeves became popular, although Reeves ignored the rumors. In May 2007, Out magazine ranked Geffen first in their list of the fifty "Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America."

Geffen has fondly recalled the time in various interviews when he was Cher's lover (before he switched over completely to men).

I wonder if that's true (that they were lovers) or if it's a cover to save Cher's face. I imagine it's the same thing Jake will say about his beard Reese, if/when he ever comes out.

Yahoo! Movies said...

As famous in the tabloids as he was in the business world, Geffen’s personal life made headlines many times over. He was linked romantically to both Cher and actress Marlo Thomas before publicly acknowledging that he was gay in 1992.

Jake is no better than Rock Hudson.

Rock Hudson was born in 1925 and lived in a very different time compared to Jake.

Prior to 1962, sodomy was a felony in every state, punished by a lengthy term of imprisonment and/or hard labor. In 1962 Illinois became the first state to end its sodomy laws, almost a decade before another state followed.

Neil Patrick Harris made it clear - he was dating girls because he was closeted gay, not because he's bi. It is possible that Christine Taylor and other girls were beards, but that's something Neil shouldn't confess.

Queerty comment by Sean Akers:

I am the person who asked Greg in Hollywood and Matt at BoyCulture to remove the pics. I don't work for Simon Halls or Matt Bomer. I am a just a friend of his and care about what is happening to him.

These pics are 9 years old. That relationship is long over. The fact is: Matt and Simon are in a relationship. Matt is openly gay. And they are raising kids.

What you think is shame is NOT. It is about my friend's privacy. There is no use in outing someone who is already out.

I asked that the pictures come down because you don't need to prove anything. I never considered asking Perez to remove his post… because he was decent enough to not use these old, personal pics to prove something that ISN'T A SECRET.

The only thing that these pics do is hurt Matt personally. Go ahead and tell the readers that he is gay. He doesn't care about that. He is open about that.

Matt is a far better representative for the gay community than you could ever know. He lives honestly and openly and works very hard for his family and his career.

I am asking that you take down the kissing pics. And apologize. Rewrite this article into the truth. Or contact me to get the facts right.
