The Price of Success

July 13, 2009

At Outfest on Sunday afternoon, three-time Emmy winning and openly gay director Todd Holland told a small audience that he advises young, gay male actors to "stay in the closet." The remark came during a panel at the Directors Guild of America titled, "Taking It to the Streets: LGBT Directors Get Political." Outfest, which pushes the slogan "protecting our past, showcasing our present, nurturing our future," is one of the premiere gay and lesbian film festivals in the United States.

Holland, who was talking as one of the featured panelists, and who once worked as a director on the critically acclaimed HBO sit-com The Larry Sanders Show, explained that it's a necessary career choice if a gay actor wants to succeed in Hollywood.

Fellow panelist and filmmaker Kirby Dick, director of Outrage, a 2009 documentary about gay politicians who stay in the closet to further their political careers, told Holland: "I know where you're coming from, but it's a regressive argument."

Holland, who was legally married before Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in November, responded that he was just being realistic, but Dick, who is heterosexual, believed that if "an A-list actor came out, it would have more impact on the culture than an A-list politician."

No one talked about the personal repercussions of a gay actor succeeding in Hollywood by lying about his sexual orientation to the general public.

Holland's comments underscore a decades old problem in Hollywood, where gay and straight studio executives, agents, and other major players often advise up-and-coming gay, male actors to live in the closet. Rarely, though, has someone like Holland been so public with that advice.

Besides Holland and Dick, "Taking It to the Streets" featured filmmakers Jamie Babbit, Katherine Brooks, Frieda Lee Mock and Charles Herman-Wurmfield, and was billed as a discussion about how gay and lesbian filmmakers "are taking a more active role in creating social and political change."

One audience member, openly gay filmmaker Matthew Mishory, later told Queer Town that Holland's mind set is pervasive throughout the entertainment business.

"This stuff doesn't just extend to actors," says Mishory. "We've been told, as gay filmmakers, not tell queer stories or else we'll get pigeonholed."

Mishory has just finished a film about legendary gay director Derek Jarman called Delphinium. Through that work, Mishory has come to believe that "the promise of the New Queer Cinema of the 1980s and 1990s has not necessarily been delivered."

Before the panelists started their discussion, blogger and lesbian filmmaker J.D. Disalvatore warned Outfest crowds on her blog, The Smoking Cocktail, that several of the filmmakers "were not particularly political, so looking forward to seeing what they pull out of their asses for this one."

A few hours later, the 47-year-old Todd Holland publicly shared his "advice," with young, gay and lesbian filmmakers sitting in the audience. One person who heard the remark, and didn't want to be identified, told Queer Town, "What kind of message is that for an older gay filmmaker to send to young gay filmmakers? It's the kind of thing that will keep people in the closet."

Outfest Director Doesn't Challenge Advice That Actors Stay Closeted said...

Emmy-winning director Todd Holland has issued an apology for language he used at an Outfest panel over the weekend when he suggested that gay actors should stay in the closet if they wish to succeed in the business.

Said Holland: "As an openly gay man in Hollywood, I know firsthand the tremendous challenges that people throughout the industry face in terms of being open about who they are. For people who know me, they know that I believe it's important for people to live openly and authentically, and I am sorry for my poorly chosen words at Outfest. At the end of the day, I hope my comments do not prevent us from having honest, thoughtful conversations about the significant barriers that make being an out actor in Hollywood an ongoing obstacle."

Holland did not go so far as to recant the advice.

Outfest Executive Director Kirsten Schaffer responded but did not go so far as to challenge Holland's assertion. Said Schaffer: "Coming out is a personal choice. It has become easier for many people, but for some, especially those in high-profile professions, it is still a challenge. Our mission at Outfest is to promote cultural and social change through film and media arts and to encourage dialogue. Outfest will continue to shed light on LGBT issues and, eventually, I know we will live in a world of equality."

Activist Robin McGehee told the L.A. Weekly's Patrick McDonald that the gay community should be "challenging the machine" that keeps actors closeted. Of LGBT groups who criticize slurs made by entertainment personalities and media, she said: "If we're going to fight someone who called an actor a 'faggot' on set, we should have those same groups fighting this one."

According to McDonald, "McGehee said ending the gay closet in Hollywood was just as important as any other gay rights struggle, adding that anti-gay legislation, violent attacks against gays and lesbians, and people remaining in the closet are issues that are 'inter-connected.'"

^^^ One of the comments:

I think the problem is, if you work in an environment where you have to hide who you are in order to be successful/marketable/accepted, we DO in fact have a problem. One that people shouldn't just have to "accept" on deal with on their own time. This whole concept of the Celuloid Closet feels comparable, as framed by the above, to one big case of employment discrimination. If one can't get hired based on one's ability, but ones perception of his or her sexual orientation, how do we expect to ever get past the concept that anything other than "straight behavior/lifestyle choices" are acceptable to mainstream society?

That Austin/Sophia pic is hot. Not quite as hot as the original with Burt Lancaster, but damn close. I bet they had fun making it knowing how much Austin loves old movies.

The t-shirts will be the first test of fan boy and girl reaction to POP. Can't wait to see how it plays out.

Great article to post Jackie. Tood should be ashamed of himself. I am glad he recanted if only slightly. What he is basically saying is if an actor wants to work and wants to make the big bucks you need to stay in the closet in HW. Jake has taken his advise which means Jake and many of his collegues have more taste for money than self reapect.

Holland is simply acknowledging the realities of Hollywood. If you're an A-List male actor who wants to be the star of a major franchise, you have to appear straight. Jake didn't make these rules, but he has to live with them. If he doesn't, Disney will find someone else.

Jake's case is tragic because I think that he tried very hard to avoid this mess, but he was hit with so much bad news (financial, familial, emotional and professional) at the same time that his resolve weakened and he just gave up.

And if Rosa Parks hadn't refused to sit at the back of the bus blacks would still probably be second-class citizens. It is just one big fucking copout to say well, nobody in HW likes out gay actors. Seriously, does anyone really think that if any A-list actors came out they would never ever work again? And seems to me those people would have pretty good discrimination suits. And yes, I know nobody wants to bite the hands that feed them, but this is 2009, not 1959.

And funny how all these powers run around, living openly gay life styles, marrying their boyfriends, and then turn around and say, sorry, you can't do the same thing.

Actors have got to stop being fucking pussies.

You know what?

1. English isn't some people's 1st language

2. A lot of people are typing on tiny cell keyboards with big fingers and/or tiny keypad pokers

3. A lot of people might be typing on tiny cell keyboards in moving vehicles or when walking

4. A lot of people might be typing fast while on a break at work, wanting to say something but not having enough time to go back and proofread

5. Tom is prolly great at other things, like math or chemistry or having empathy.

I used to be a spelling fanatic but not anymore, not after finding out that the internet is made of lots of different people in different situations. And you know what else, sometimes the spelling mistakes make for the best oops and laughs, for everyone! Ok, end of rant and thanks for listening/reading!

Acknowledging a reality of bigotry is one thing. Saying that it has to remain the same, like how Holland said, is quite another.

"Seriously, does anyone really think that if any A-list actors came out they would never ever work again? "

You misstated my argument. The question is not whether an A-List male actor will work again if he comes out. The real question is whether the same actor will ever land the starring role in a $200 million action franchise. The answer to the latter question is an unequivocal 'no', at least at this moment in Hollywood history.

Nor is it fair to assume, as I think you do, that closeted gay male A-list actors should give up trying to bag mega-franchises. Why should they, especially when they have the talent, as Jake clearly does?

The breakthrough that we're looking for - our own gay Jackie Robinson of Hollywood, if you will - is unlikely to be an out gay male a-list actor who bags a huge franchise. It's more likely to be a closeted gay male a-list actor who pretends to be straight in order to secure the franchise and *then* comes out of the closet.

Granted, the latter scenario is infinitely messier because it's difficult to predict how much psychic damage, to himself and others, the gay male actor will inflict before he ultimately gets what he wants.

But in the end, the results will be the same.

It's these kind of 'gay actors shouldn't come out for career' comments that are more troubling imo. Those that sit back and just go along with the bandwagon of accepted or perceived mass consumerism without ever challenging it.

Technically, the consumers aren't getting a gay male lead, they're getting a man who in his private time is gay but who can play a great part as a lead man, regardless of sexuality. And yes people have been watching gay men for YEARS in lead roles, they just haven't known it.

Why is it we cannot accept a gay man to play a good lead part but we accept without question that some guy walked on water and fed thousands with a 3 fishes from a barrel?

Anonymous said...

This is what I ultimately hope for.

Mr. Holland's comment leaves me speechless - it's one thing to give an assessment of the current state of affairs in HW, but quite another to advise people to put up with it, to go along to get along. Very disappointing. :(

Did you know back in the old days, in the 1800's even in the 1950's or so, when a woman schoolteacher got married/had kids (I can't remember which or if it was both) that she had to quit teaching? I'm serious. The attitudes at that time was "Oh my god, she's having SEX, she can't be around children anymore." Well its the same with HW and gay actors, now isn't it. The attitude if an actor is out is "Oh my god, people are going to know he's having GAY SEX, it's all people will think about when he's up on the silver screen."

Which is all BS. Just like a schoolteacher can still do her work if she's having a sex life at home, so can a gay actor.

Producers by giving an openly gay actor romantic lead or action man role?
Or an A-list actor by coming out and hoping he'll stay on the A-list?

Dear Ted:
After seeing Brüno, I can understand why some people don't think it's funny, and why some think it may reinforce some of the prejudices held by the ignorant among us. However, my theory is that this type of humor is not for most people. I think that Sacha Baron Cohen = John Waters + Andy Kaufman. And really, that's not for everyone. Personally, I thought the movie was hilarious, and I am 10000 percent LGBT friendly. Saw it with a gaggle of my gays and they loved it, too. Then again, we love Waters and Kaufman. Hope you are smoking less these days and healing from your loss.

Johnny Depp Wants to Be an Old Lady said...

When you're as awesome as Johnny Depp, you can pretty much do—or be—anything you want. After a pirate, John Dillinger, Willy Wonka, Ichabod Crane, Sweeney Todd and a surfer dude on SpongeBob SquarePants, what else is there? The steamy actor points out several new frontiers for himself in an interview in the U.K.'s Mirror.

"My dream role would be to play music legend Carol Channing in a biopic of her life," he said. "I love her, I really do. She's amazing. With all the digital technology these days, I could probably pull it off." The Tony Award-winner is 88-years-old!

He jumps even further off the deep end when he adds, "I'd have a go at playing a 12-year-old girl if they asked me too."

Hmm.... We're not so sure we want to see that. Do you? Or would you rather him stick to typical (if you could call it that) Tim Burton fare like Alice in Wonderland?

I also don't think that just because certain members of the gay community who may have seen Bruno like it or are not offended by it it now way gives Bruno credibility. There are just as many who don't like it and/or find it offensive. You have an upstanding member of the gay community advising young HW to stay in the closet also, and I don't think very many would agree with that, gay or straight. Taste in comedy isn't related to sexuality. :(

SBC is no John Waters, the difference being that John Waters is an out and proud gay man. As Ted said, Bruno is a straight man's idea of gay. I also don't think Andy Kaufman's comedy tread on ground he didn't walk himself. :)

No matter where you came down in American Idol's so-called culture war -- the one that seemingly forced us all to choose either glammed up gay rocker Adam Lambert or down home nice guy Kris Allen -- the show's top 10 contestants, currently on a cross-country arena tour, have one message they want you hear: All for one and one for all.

The good behavior comes from the top down. Allen, who won the show's crown, spent half his allotted press conference time before and after the finale asking people please not to vote for him because he's a Christian, and defending his friendship with Lambert no matter how they might be different. (Since then he's upped the ante by declaring Lambert's crush on him a mutual bromance.)

Still, when Fred Phelps-style protesters showed up at last night's show in San Jose, armed with their usual bullshit about how homos and all who abide them are going straight to hell, they might have been hoping for at least a little backstage support from one of the season's most devout and outspoken Christians: #10 ruff-and-tuff oil rigger Michael Sarver.

“For those outside protesting I say do not judge less ye be judged yourself. Guys don’t mind these people we are a strong family,” Sarver Twittered, followed by: “We are together in this this thing. You mess with one you mess with all ten. We are strong and we are 1.” Because those two blurbs apparently weren't enough, he then added: "Funny how people think it's a good idea to mess with a big Texan and his AI family. Lol Adam is just fine, shakes it off and so should we."

Awww, it's like an old-school episode of the Real World up in here, everyone learning about each other's differences and growing as people and shit. One sweet suggestion we'd like to put on the table for the rest of this summer-long, 50-city tour? Call the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence chapter in your local city and pre-arrange for some counter-protesting. That'll give the kids something to tweet about.

And Japan is one of the bigger markets for US movies, but that hasn't stopped HW from casting blacks in movies, particularly Will Smith and his big tent pictures.

One phenomena is that people in entertainment are sort of "exempt" from the kind bigotry levied at the rest of us mere mortals, so I doubt that movie sales are greatly affected unless there is government censorship. And as you say, there will always be pirating and bootleg copies getting around, unfortunately.

Anonymous said...

The studios/producers are concerned about their main target group for blockbusters in the US market - young guys between 15 to 25, the group with the highest rate of homophobes.

And as long as society, including HW caters to the homphobia of that group, we will not get lasting change in this country when it comes to the acceptance of gays. That is also the group most likely to gay bash. HW's saying, yeah, we agree with you, we don't want those nasty f*ggots in our movies, just reinforces the belief that is okay to treat gay people as second class citizens, or worse.

Meanwhile everyone in HW hides behind their money and tells themselves it doesn't matter. What they are really saying is who cares if some gay men and lesbians are beaten or murdered.

Anonymous said...

Japan is one of the bigger markets for US movies, but that hasn't stopped HW from casting blacks in movies, particularly Will Smith and his big tent pictures.

Will Smith is black, but he's "straight", "masculine" and a "real man" - boys want to be him, girls want to be with him, just like we expect it to be with Hollywood leading men.

Would it work with openly gay Will?

Hard to say - I think that the public's levels of tolerance are underestimated by both sides. How out and open would a gay actor have to be to satisfy the public? Even the lady who was doing the license pics was nice, she was reminding the ladies to take their purses off their shoulders so the pics look better and she joked and told 1 man to take his backpack off so if he got stopped by the police it wouldn't look like he was wearing a parachute bomb in his license photo, Lol. Everyone was laughing, the DMV wasn't bad at all. Oh and without an appt and it was busy, it took about all of 35 minutes. Never thought I'd say this but I wish more things were like that DMV!

^ That's the way to do it, not like Jake.

One day, we aren't there yet. It's a process of accepting gay people as "normal", not defined by their sexuality, and it will take time.

We're never going to get there given the mindet in HW. And it is increasingly, a HW problem. For example, by an overwhelming majority, people under the age of 40 support gay marriage, and the younger you go, the more support there is. You're never going to get to 100% gay acceptance, hell, you don't have that when it comes to racism, sexism, etc.

The time has come for HW to change.

PFLAG Congratulates Actress Sigourney Weaver on Her Emmy Award Nomination for Her Inspiring Performance in Prayers for Bobby

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) National extended heartfelt congratulations to multiple award-winning actress Sigourney Weaver on her Emmy Award nomination for her role in the TV movie Prayers for Bobby in which she portrayed the mother of a gay son who -- following tragedy -- embarks on a life-changing journey of acceptance.

The film has also received an Emmy nomination for Best TV Movie.

"PFLAG is thrilled to see Ms. Weaver recognized for her amazing performance as a mother who comes to embrace her gay son and become an advocate for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people," said John Cepek, President of PFLAG National.

Sigourney Weaver, an Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner, played the role of Mary Griffith, a devoutly religious mother who struggles to accept her son, Bobby, when he comes out as a young gay man. "Following a tragic turn in Bobby's life, Sigourney's character began a journey of soul-searching and learning to embrace her son with inspiration and help from PFLAG. She came to be a powerful PFLAG member, advocating for acceptance and equality for all."

"Sigourney's performance gives us an inspiring role model for parents, families, and friends of LGBT people, emphasizing the critical need to embrace and accept our LGBT loved ones," Cepek added.

PFLAG National also extended its congratulations and gratitude to the Executive Producers of Prayers for Bobby, Daniel Sladek, Chris Taaffe, and David Permut. "The Executive Producers of this film gave an enormous amount of their time and energy to ensure this important and courageous story was heard. PFLAG is especially grateful to them -- as well as to Ms. Weaver -- for her uplifting performance," said Jody M. Huckaby, Executive Director of PFLAG National. "It is wonderful to see that the film is receiving much-deserved recognition with the Best TV Movie Emmy nomination."

Poor Jen Aniston. So, I guess this is why The Chin chose the inmoral path of bearding to avoid becoming a Jen II

Every guy who is asked if he is dating Aniston, goes like - Eww! No! No friggin way,are you nuts???!!!

That girl is like the plague for men, every one of them think they are going to get trap by her clingy hands and the media will be all over them!! And I think it is all bullshit for the rags, i don't believe she is so desperate, but it seems some people find it hard to believe that a woman can feel complete without a man by her side. For example, Chin who bought herself a new "male partner" because ,apparently, being single is like a sin to her...

Speaking of losing superhero roles... Is Henry Cavill the most overlooked man in Hollywood? It's a good question since he keeps losing high profile roles. The Tudor's co-star seems to have it all: talent, incredible looks, a decent resume thus far. Why isn't Hollywood taking the next step with him? It's yet another reminder that the entertainment industry is a complicated place. The variables in play on every film and career are legion.

Commentary Track

Which is one of the reasons why... and I'll have to wrap up with this since I'll lose my cool... I'm still madhot angry about that director [Todd Holland] who advised the closet for actors. Screen, television and stage careers for actors are complicated enough as is: a combination of luck, talent, beauty and sex appeal, age, temperament, location, workplace compatibility, what type of genres are in vogue, what the competition is like...you name it. So many things are out of their control. How they present themselves to the industry is one of the only things they can control. Why complicate that already tough job by building up a persona based on lies? If you ask me The Closet is too easy and lazy a scapegoat for why some actors don't succeed in the way people think they might. Fact: most actors don't succeed, gay or straight. (Though success, it should be noted, is relative and if actors are working at all regularly, they are a success even if people don't know their faces and names)

I'm as perplexed as anyone as to why, say, Cheyenne Jackson who is talented, hot, by all accounts professional and in exactly the right age range for the good male roles, hasn't had any real big screen parts since his fine work in United 93. But if we don't have the brave Cheyenne Jacksons we will never get to the awesome ____________ . You know him, that actor everyone loves in 2015 who was always out of the closet and became a huge star anyway. Everyone will look at him and wonder why anyone in 2009 was still thinking that the closet was a good idea.

Jake is probably getting his ass chewed out for looking like a crazy man after that drunken concert and for looking so morose whenever he is with his bearding partner. Disney is notorious for trying to control it's stars image. They never succeed, but still keep trying.

Anonymous said...

Meanwhile Disney has gotten a lot of press about how business analysts think the company is not doing well the movie Up was a surprise hit and slowed the bad news, but the don't expect Disney to do well over the next year or so.

I don't think it's a coincidence that it's also one of the most controlling and homophobic. Business studies find that companies that are very progressive when it comes to women and gay employees are also generally the most successful financially.

Exactly. Jake sold his soul to get in bed with Disney. Reese, on the other hand, has no soul to sell.

Now this director walks the walk. Thank you Roland Emmerich. And a big "fuck you" to the homophobic director at Outfest. Forgot your name already, and you can bet your ass I won't be seeing any of your dogpoop work.

Emmerich has claimed that he witnessed overt racism when producers and studio executives were opposed to allowing him to cast Will Smith for the lead in Independence Day, and reluctant to allow him to portray an interracial couple in The Day After Tomorrow. He has also claimed that he has encountered homophobia from the same groups, and is vocal in his opposition of such behavior. He has stated that sometimes he does "[not like working in] the movie business", describing it as a sometimes "very cold, brutal business", but his motivation to keep directing is that he genuinely "like[s] making movies".

In 2006, he pledged $150,000 to the Legacy Project, a campaign dedicated to gay and lesbian film preservation. Emmerich made the donation on behalf of Outfest, making it the largest gift in the festival's history.

But he thinks times are changing with so many more high-profile out performers these days: “Girls don’t look at [Broadway star] Cheyenne Jackson and say, ‘He’s gay, I’m not turned on,’” Bragman explains. “They think he’s hot. They don’t care. We’re in a whole different world.”

“What I always tell young actors is that they have to follow their heart,” Bragman says. “My personal shoes is that I would rather be out of the closet and be happy.”

Bragman adds, “In all the time I’ve helped people come out, I’ve never had someone tell me they were sorry about it.”

OK we make fun of Jake here but 90% of it is in good snarky gay-humor fun, right? Well I have to say after seeing the latest POP pic comments on Jared, ONTD and twitters that I feel really really bad for him. People are saying things that are mean and hurtful. Yes actors have to get a thick skin but OMG the judgements from 1 pic and people insulting him, it hurts me in a weird way, and believe me I'm no softy. I have tears in my eyes as I'm writing this. I feel really sorry for him, it doesn't matter how much money he got, it still must hurt to read things like that.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm in a POP quandary. Whether or not POP succeeds it still remains to be seen if the bearding will continue:

1. will they think it wasn't enough and go for more

2. will they decide it didn't work and quit

3. will they say it was a success and continue it further

4. will they say it was a success and quit it

In a way I hope POP succeeds if only to not make Jake feel badly about himself, his talent, his looks. He really is a sweet person and I feel awful reading some of the venomous remarks people are making. He doesn't deserve that.

Personally I hope it is a huge bust, and that he goes back to doing what he does best, quirky roles in independent movies, and loses the beard and gets back his charisma and sexy back.

You can bet if PoP is a success and he has to do a couple of sequels that we will never seen an end to the Chin.

I feel sorry for him in a way, because he's sacrificed a lot for this. But you could look at it that he's sacrificed alot for a pile of poop, so maybe as 1:41 says, in the long run, it will be better if PoP fails.

I just think he's been extremely badly advised and managed. However's responsible for this sorry mess should be ashamed of themselves.

But people have lost interest in him and/or view him as just another blah, not so good looking anymore average joe actor.

So much of a person's beauty comes from inside. As someone keeps saying, the Chin is ugly because of what oozes out from inside of her. Well, that is starting to happen with Jake. Right now he's just at the "not hot" anymore stage, but give it another year or two and he'll be as ugly as his beard. :-( :-(

It would be interesting to see what reaction PoP would be getting if we hadn't had to suffer 2 year of Reeke. Even if Jake hadn't come out but was still doing the is he /isn't he stuff.

Of course interest in him would have lessened but I'm pretty sure he would be better liked than he is now. At the moment he's just the less unpleasant half of a really unpleasant, over-exposed, pretenious(public) couple.

One Sneaky, Sell-Out Blind Vice

Last time we heard from evil and conniving Shafterella Shoshstein, that bitch was checking out on her man, who was so famously checking out on her. Only nobody knew about the former, crafty thing she is.

Now, S.S. has moved on more openly—and how. Ms. S-squared has all the tabloid world thinking she's just dreamy and perfectly content with her new man, only nothing could be further from the truth.

What is the real deal with Shafterella, you ask? Well, not only does it not always involve the classiest kinds of guys (think real Crawley McNugget material here), but wouldn't you know it, S.S. also likes to have over supercurvy and very...

...femme babes to her Beverly Hills pad whenever she can.

You know, for tennis and myriad other athletic activities that involve sweaty thighs and skirts as short as possible. All the while, the lemming-like readers so faithful to ass-kissing People and similar rags, think Shafterella's all happy-butt with her dreamy man.

Like I said: That's hardly accurate, as S.S.'s man is much more content shacking up with his dude, anybody confused yet?

Oh, don't you know, it's just another day and story in the annals of fake-romance Hollywood, where publicists and agents (seriously, no joke) are still putting together these ersatz romances like it's the damn '50s. All so their clients can supposedly make bigger paychecks—and therefore, these 10 percenters do, too.

Everybody wins in the end, right?

Wrong. What about when these faker-jokers have kids? What then? It's one thing for Shafty and her dumb-crap gay BF to sell themselves out, but what, for instance, happens if Shafty and her partner do get married and have kids, what do you tell them?
