I Dish, Therefore I Am

On March 10, 2005, gossip columnist Ted Casablanca ran an item online under the heading "One Adorable Blind Vice".

The story was similar to numerous blind items Casablanca has run since bringing his column, "The Awful Truth," to E! Online in 1996. He relates a potentially scandalous story, usually with the kinds of revelations a major media gossip columnist would avoid, but disguises the object of his gossip behind a fanciful name like Morgan Mayhem, Furrowed Frank or Toothy Tile.

The ongoing saga of Toothy Tile says a good deal about Internet gossip, its place within the gay community and its function as a moral compass. It also points to some interesting intersections of gossip and gendered performance.

Hollywood gossip, of course, was around long before the Internet. Usually dated from the start of Louella Parsons' syndicated column in 1925, the field has traditionally been female-dominated, with Parsons and her chief rival, Hedda Hopper, engaged in an often-uneasy power struggle with the movie industry. The film studios used them to promote their films and personalities but also dreaded the effect of a personal attack or untimely revelation. One unwritten rule, however, was that the most damaging items — criminal arrests, long-term affairs and homosexuality — were not for publication in any but the least reputable venues. Parsons, Hopper and most of Hollywood may have known that Ramon Novarro was gay, but they weren't about to publish the fact. And if a writer broke the rules — as Bill Robinson did when he wrote about Spencer Tracy's drinking problems and his relationship with Katharine Hepburn in a 1962 issue of Look — the offender was cut off from industry sources.

Even with the decline of the studio system, some restrictions still hold. Unless a star's drug use is impossible for the media to ignore, it's kept out of the gossip columns. And "outing" is still considered off-limits, at least to columnists working in the major media.

For the gay on-line community, gossip serves a variety of purposes. If nothing else, it provides its readers with a sense of titillation as they vicariously enjoy celebrities' lives, even when the object of interest is masked behind the veil of the blind item. Like many on-line discussion boards, gay gossip sites provide their geographically dispersed users with a sense of community.

One element unifying gossip communities is a shared sense of morality. Gay gossip unites the gay and lesbian community by establishing behavioral norms for that community, creating insiders aware of those norms and outsiders unaware of or opposed to them.

In the case of Toothy Tile, the nature of those norms depends on whether one is inside or outside the gay community. Within the world of heteronormativity, Toothy Tile is at fault both for being gay and, more important, for wishing to make a public proclamation of that fact.

Despite the social changes of the past 50 years, the entertainment industry appears to be dealing with sexual orientation by the same standards in operation when Universal Pictures forced Rock Hudson to take a wife to forestall suspicions of homosexuality. The current attitude is described quite simply in one publicity-shy, or rather gay-publicity shy actor's legal complaint against a porn star who had claimed a relationship with him: "While plaintiff believes in the rights of others to follow their own sexual preference, vast numbers of the public throughout the world do not share his view and, believing that he had a homosexual affair and did so during his marriage, they will be less inclined to patronize [his] films, particularly since he tends to play parts calling for heterosexual romance and action adventure. " No doubt, these are the same audiences who would expect the actor to know how to pilot a jet fighter in real life.

Who, then, is thought to be the perpetually closeted Toothy Tile? Consensus gives the honor to Jake Gyllenhaal.

So, what team is Jake playing for? How many beards do you see in this picture? And...well, do I really have to say anything.

I seriously think Jake should get a new manager and pr. They have ruined what was a great image, and turned Jake into just another HW phoney, a dime a dozen. For starters, Evelyn is seriously conflicted here, representing both Jake and Reese, because it is clear as day that she favors Reese in everything she does.

They've helped turn Jake back into a closeted, cowering ball-less appendage to Reese.

"Duh! It would mean that a love child is the reason for bearding."

LOL.

LOL what?

^^ LOL because you don't have a love child with an egg donor or a surrogate.

10:46, mte. With the lack of statement regarding Heath's death and Reeke, which has done nothing for which it was intended, it makes me wonder if Jake's team has lost some of their influence in HW. Maybe they're so busy trying to rebuild their reputation and make good on their other more established clients with the higher contacts and tptb that Jake's account is the one suffering and his leads are the ones not being followed up. Which would partially explain why he's not getting any roles. Or..maybe it's their way of "punishing" him for causing them to lose their reliability factor.

10:14, are there any more underhanded tricks you'd like to use to try and silence people people who disagree with you, or have you used them all up now? You've tried the "you're so mean", "you must secretly believe it too" the "you must be PR" and now finally the "disagreeing with me is like being a homophobe!" tactics, so I'm not sure what else is left.

And after doing all of that, for you to have the brass balls to question the manner in which I make my opinions known is breathtaking. I and many others don't believe in baby tile, you and many others do. You can continue to post about your belief and I won't accuse you of trying to recruit others or any of the other bullshit you tried to pull, now try and do the same for me.

Anonymous said...

"Of course you can - it's just a bit more complicated"

Uh, no. Not when you're talking about professional donors and surrogates. I've read of cases where the donors/surrogates don't even meet the prospective parents, or if they do, it's only once or twice.

"I can't remember the exact timeline but one was when Brangelina had the twins, the other time I can't remember at all. But yeah Reeke has the best *cough* timing! LOL"

In all the gossip sites that shows Reeke's last PDA, half of the posters go OT and chat about Michael Jackson's death.

To be fair, PR can't be blamed for another horrendous timeline.
They cannot predict the future, can't they?

Anonymous said...

Jackson is a legend, Reeke is a joke. Of course they'll rather talk about the King of Pop than ditz Witherspoon and Jakey boy.

The Baby Tile believers get so defensive because they known how ridiculous the story is, but they badly want to believe it because it gives them a way to rationalize Jake's bearding. It also helps them cling to the "fairy tale romance" aspect of the J/A tale.

Anonymous said...

We may never know why Jake didn't release a statement.

He may not know.

I am just wondering. Do they give drugs to people who are in shock?

I am not rationalizing the bearding. I think it is despicable, homophobic and wrong wrong wrong if you have a child. I think it is so wrong that I hope there is a ring in purgatory (not that Jews believe in hell) just for people like Jake and Austin who would do that all in the name of big bucks.

I'm just saying I think it adds to the reasons for the bearding, and why Jake spends so much time on the road--i.e., a father wouldn't possibly do that, would they?

Honestly, I'd rather they not have a child.

Anonymous said...

The people who come here incessantly trying to make us believe Jake is straight, Reeke is real and/or baby tile does not exist are OK with me. They are just wasting their own time. I just scroll past. Do they really think I am going to start believing them just because they say so. I say let them waste their time, it's amusing. I suspect they got booted off Babble for other reasons so have nowhere else to go.

Anonymous said...

for those who are always howling about "how do you KNOW Jake's gay"
do add to the LONG list of the obvious the fact that PR put an iron lid on Jake after Heath's death because they were so anxious to squash gay rumors they didnt trust him opening his yap. & rightly so. be interesting to know how many of his friends and family and PR people and Heath's people were advising him to STFU.

c'mon, don't compare Jake being gay or bi with hidding a child somewhere.
A gay closeted bearding HW actor is not a four leaf clover, lots of gay men (famous or not) have double lives.

But having a child without people around him knowing?? It is just impossible, it doesn't matter how low is Jaustin's moral, it's a question of logistic. In current times, there is no way they could get away with such a thing.

Anonymous said...

It is so pathetic, and transparent, to try to lump in the people who believe jake is straight, or Reeke is real, with those who do not buy the Baby Tile nonsense. Those of us who believe Jake is gay aren't trying to convince anyone of anything.

We know it's Baby Tile is bullshit.

When it comes to getting film roles and Jake's lack of work, I think you're all being a little bit obsessive and trying to see everything through Reeke-tinged glasses.

The simple fact is Jake is a B list actor who wasn't going anywhere fast when Brokeback came along. Same with Heath. That's not a reflection on their talent, just an honest admission of their status. Brokeback Mountain bumped them up in terms of profile, but the other films that they starred around the time of Brokeback's release and afterwards all did pretty much nothing at the box office (see The Brothers Grimm, Cassanova, Candy for Heath and Jarhead, Proof and Zodiac for Jake). Neither of them showed any ability to actually draw in crowds, so it's a credit to the work of their people (and, yes, their talent) that they both secured high profile roles in mega budget studio films (Batman and Prince of Persia). Sadly Heath died before he could reap the benefits of his work.

Jake's problem is that his mega budget film has been delayed by an entire year, and his two other smaller films were delayed too. If things had gone as scheduled he'd already have had one smaller film out and would be right in the middle of major promotions for Prince of Persia. So naturally all the plans he and his management had last year for keeping his schedule clear around now are screwed, as are any hopes they had of leveraging better roles/bigger pay based on Prince of Persia. Reeke may also be helping/hindering his perception and marketability depending on your view point, but THE major problem for Jake was the Prince of Persia release date delay.

Pardon me if I go on a little bit too much about this, but this is actually an area I have some real experience in. Not at a high executive level, but real experience nonetheless. Frankly Hollywood is in the midst of a major shift in power away from actors and back towards studios. We can all talk about Jake getting left behind while the likes of Shia and co are getting the roles and the money, but the truth is they really aren't. Outside of Transformers, Shia isn't setting the world alight (and he wasn't exactly the reason people went to watch Transformers or Indiana Jones). Outside of Twilight, Robert Pattinson isn't burning up the box office either. Nor is Zac Efron. We're just not seeing that younger generation of actors coming up to replace the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey etc as guaranteed box office draws. It's a fascinating time in Hollywood right now, and it will be interesting to see just how far this shift in power goes.

11:42 AM, but the frequevent Reeke photo ops weren't necessary. Do you agree?

Also, Jake did the interview with the Italian VF and told the interviewer that the best thing about BBM was his friendship with Mr. L. whom he loved. That was a few months before H. died.

Anonymous said...

PR work for Jake, he doesn't work for them. I wish 11:42 and all the other people who keep jabbering on about PR making Jake do this or that would realise this and put the blame where it belongs: entirely on Jake.

Anonymous said...

11:47 AM, thanks largely to Heath's (mostly) and Jake's performances and great reviews, the movie was such a success. Both guys were in their mid 20ies when BBM came out. TDK would have make Heath a star and enlarged his fanbase and who knows, maybe he would have become a bigger B.O. draw because of it?

Jake has a couple of films coming up. We'll see how they'll do, esp. PoP. If he manages to pull in the audience, it could be helpful to his future career.

Interesting post,really.

Perhaps is a good thing that people start going to see a movie, for the MOVIE ITSELF, and not because they have a silly crush on the actors.

Maybe, in this way, lots of HW figures would stop giving tons of $$$ to PR and managers to make a totally false public image of themselves and begin to concentrate in just giving good, sincere performances.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Jake didn't react very appropriate after Heath's death. But there's no doubt to me he loved him. You could see it in his eyes. The ones who don't see it are in denial. It doesn't mean he likes Heath's babymama or wants to spend time with his kid, but he was very fond of Heath, no doubt.

Anonymous said...

I think 11:47 has an interesting, and perceptive, view of what's going on, especially re: the shift in power back to the studios. Witness, the supposed iron grip summit has on the Twilight crew's personal lives, and Moneyball, with Brad Pitt, being dropped at the last minute.

I think alot of people are afraid that if Jake's next set of films, especially POP, take off, it will look as if Jake's decision to beard was the right choice.

Anonymous said...

I agree that Jake adored Heath. We may never know why Jake behaved as he did following Heath's death.

What I really would love to know is, between the time on the Tuesday when he left the set and that Friday/Saturday when he saw the photo op in the park, where was he?

So where was he during those few days?

Anonymous said...

So where was he during those few days?

I wish I knew.

I don't believe for a minute, bearding was a bad choice (at least in a cold economical question)

Just think about Jake's public image, if he wouldn t be bearding now.
A down on his luck actor, without any exciting future project.
He can be in the spotlight thanks to Reese, this way he might not achieve a hot acting carrer for sure, but people won't forget his face and who he is or was, like what happened with actors like Jason Patric or Tom Everett Scott,to name a few...

Anonymous said...

I think most of us realize the delay in PoP has been a problem for Jake. But the real question is still, why do they think Reeke is going to fill that void, particularly, when as you say, it is increasingly the case that movies take off because of the story, effects, etc., and not the star.

Quinto has proved that you don't need to beard to sell a movie. And by the way, how often do we see Shia with a woman other than his mother?

I think one of the problems with Reeke is that Jake and his people seem to be acting as if nothing has changed in the industry.

Anonymous said...

I dunno 12:21. What if he's not getting many offers because of his association with Reese the past 2-3 years, because directors don't like her and don't want their sets used as bearding vehicles, or more realisticaly, Reese image vehicles?

Right, the women on The View had no idea who Jake was. Maybe if Anne had referred to him as "Reese's boyfriend". I think he looks more pathetic, desperate, etc., by hanging out with Reese while he has no work. Shows a real lack of confidence in himself.

Ding-ding-ding, you just hit the jackpot. Remember that the closet swings both ways in HW now. There are some actors and directors who won't work with Jake if they think he's gay, but there are other actors, directors and studios who won't work with Jake if they think that he's closeted, bearding and clinging to a manipulative, unpopular beard.

Jake's people (family, pr, gossip rag sources, industry friends) are trying desperately to convince Jake that the latter category is smaller than the former, but Jake hasn't worked since Dec. 08, and he hasn't been seen in movie theaters since Oct. 07.

Maybe his semi-stagnant career is a sign of the new cultural math for closeted, young, a-list male actors in Hollywood. Bearding and closeted behavior will help you in the short run, but in the long-run, you will lose more than you gain professionally.

Someone, somewhere in Hollywood is punishing Jake for bearding.

Taylor was even planning to attend his live concert comeback, "I was packing up my clothes to go to London for his opening when I heard the news. I still can't believe it. I don't want to believe it. It can't be so."

She continued that Michael "will live in my heart forever, but it's not enough. My life feels so empty."

"I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other. The purest, most giving love I've ever known. Oh God! I'm going to miss him. I can't yet imagine life with out him. I guess with God’s help … I'll learn. I keep looking at the photo he gave me of himself, which says, 'To my true love Elizabeth, I love you forever.' Duke Univ. official charged in child sex case
By DEVLIN BARRETT – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Duke University official has been arrested and charged with offering a 5-year-old boy for sex.

Frank Lombard, the school's associate director of the Center for Health Policy, was arrested after an Internet sting, according to the FBI's Washington field office and the city's police department.

According to an affidavit by District of Columbia Police Detective Timothy Palchak, an unidentified informant facing charges in a separate child sex case led authorities to Lombard.

Authorities said that Lombard tried to persuade a person — who he did not know was a police officer — to travel to North Carolina to have sex with a child.

The detective's affidavit charges Lombard said in an online chat that he had sexually molested the boy. The court papers say Lombard also invited the undercover detective to North Carolina to have sex with the young boy and even suggested which hotel he should use.

Lombard was charged in federal court in Washington with attempting to induce someone to cross state lines to engage in sex with a child. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

He appeared in federal court in Durham, N.C., on Friday before Magistrate Judge Wallace Dixon. At the hearing, Lombard agreed to be transferred to Washington for a later court hearing. His lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs at Duke, said Lombard has been employed with Duke University since 1999. He is now on unpaid administrative leave.

"Duke is cooperating with the investigation," Schoenfeld said. He said the university was notified of the incident after Lombard was arrested.

Authorities executed a search warrant Wednesday evening at Lombard's home, according to court documents. The papers show investigators seized two webcams, five computers and a sex toy, among other items.

I just don't see Reese hanging out with other people's children, and certainly not risking getting caught.

But if someone can tell me a logical reason for Reese doing this, I would love to read it.

Mourning Heath:

I think Jake was heartbroken and couldn't talk about it. I also think in his 'angry' stage of grief he kept quiet because he didn't want to share is pain with the public. Then, it was too late and he had no way to speak. I bet he will be asked and he will respond that he was too devastated about it to even put out a comment. He will state that he handled it badly, but he was in pain. I think it will be in a written interview because he would have more control. I bet he still speaks of Heath in the present and his pain will come out. I don't think he was evil, I think he was someone who had experienced very little grief in his life and didn't know how to handle it. I think he has had a lot of grief now.

Baby Tile:

I hope it doesn't exist because unless the other father is someone else, he or the father had to be apart from their child for long periods of time. That would make me very sad for that child.

Reese:

Whether they are real or fake I think Jake grew up in a family where his parents had a terrible marrage and treated each other badly. He has been trained to live in a relationship like that. It's normal to just 'deal' with the other person and stay together. There are pictures where they look like they are friends (I didn't say love, so don't get hostile) and other times they don't seem to be so thrilled with each other. He doesn't know how to get out, he learned to just suffer. He and Kiki broke up (real or not) because her drug problem got really bad. Notice he stayed with her for a long time, even though she had a drug problem.

SENSITIVE CUT

NO one ever accused Sacha Baron Cohen (above) of good taste, but Universal Pictures exercised caution Thursday night before screening "Bruno" at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood by deleting a scene with La Toya Jackson. Since her brother Michael had died just hours before, the suits cut the scene -- shown at screenings in London, Paris and Madrid -- which features gay fashion journalist Bruno trying to get Michael's phone number from La Toya's BlackBerry as he interviews her in an LA apartment, where Mexicans are bent over and used as furniture and sushi is served off a naked man.

THEATER REVIEW

I Love You, You’re Perfect. You’re a Girl?

...
The Viola of the gamine movie actress Anne Hathaway is the marquee attraction that will surely make this production the summer’s buzziest theater ticket. But among the many pleasures of her performances is its effortless modesty. On screen or onstage Ms. Hathaway possesses the unmistakable glow of a natural star, but she dives smoothly and with obvious pleasure into the embrace of a cohesive ensemble cast.

A frankness of manner and a brisk emotional clarity are the hallmarks of her performance. As Viola moves from heartbroken over her brother Sebastian’s apparent drowning to heartsore over her love for Duke Orsino (Raúl Esparza), who enlists her to help woo his own love, Countess Olivia (Audra McDonald), Ms. Hathaway traces the transformations with an open manner and a bright humor that feel spontaneous and unforced.

I probably don’t need to tell you how lovely she looks in male disguise as the page Cesario, with her dark hair in a floppy crop. Hard as Ms. Hathaway tried to look harsh in “Rachel Getting Married,” her savage scowl could never hide the freshness of her beauty. Judging by the stylish costumes from Jane Greenwood, Mr. Sullivan has set the play around the early 19th century. In her smart, brass-buttoned blue military jacket and boots Ms. Hathaway looks like a young duke who has stepped boldly forth from a classic British portrait of the era, a bright pink bloom on his pallid cheek.

It’s true that Ms. Hathaway’s speaking of the verse could benefit from a more sophisticated lyric impulse. The wit and meaning are delivered purely while the music is a little muted. But that is a small flaw in a performance of vivid passions in the play’s crucial role, which binds together the various journeys ending in lovers’ meetings.
...

Ms. Hathaway said she has wanted to do a Central Park production since seeing the Public’s 2001 production of “The Seagull,” starring Ms. Streep, Kevin Kline and Natalie Portman. “And the year Meryl did ‘Mother Courage’ in the park, I was on vacation in Italy, and my parents called and said: ‘Get on a plane. It’s worth interrupting your vacation and coming home,’ ” Ms. Hathaway said.

Kiki has a drug problem (like so many Hollywood actors and actresses), but she functions and she's working, so there is no reason to believe that drugs had anything to do with their split.

007 Craig in talks to star in Jim Sheridan movie said...

James Bond actor Daniel Craig is mulling over starring Jim Sheridan’s next project “Dream House.”

The English actor is in negotiations with the Dublin–born director to star in the movie of a man who moves his family to house in the country, and finds not only is the place haunted, but the prior owners met a gruesome end.

Sheridan, of “My Left Foot,” “In the name of the Father,” and “In America” fame, is just after completing “Brothers,” which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire and is due to hit the big screen in December. Craig also has a busy schedule ahead of him. The 41-year-old is set to shoot his third movie as James Bond soon, and is also set to tread the boards on Broadway with Hugh Jackman in “A Steady Rain” this fall.

The dark strains in the music, the complicated colors in all the major performances, even the dependable uncertainty of the weather in Central Park, where for much of June it seemed indeed as if “the rain it raineth every day” — all contribute to the moving sense that the richest joys are hard won, the triumph of love just a hair’s breadth away from the heartbreak of loss.

Gays Love Jesus Almost As Much as Straights

Usually we hear one of two things from straight religious zealots: They want to save our souls, or that we don't deserve the love of our savior. Both, quite frankly, are suggestions we want none of. But thanks to a new study, here's something you can throw back in their face: We love God too!

Some six in 10 gays and lesbians say "faith is important" in their lives, according to the Barna Group (and Christian research firm), which phone surveyed more than 9,000 adults. Compare that to the 72 percent of straight folks who say faith is important, and we're almost as good as heteros as loving The Jesus (or whoever).

"People who portray gay adults as godless, hedonistic, Christian bashers are not working with the facts," says George Barna, Barna's founder. "A substantial majority of gays cite their faith as a central facet of their life, consider themselves to be Christian, and claim to have some type of meaningful personal commitment to Jesus Christ active in their life today."

Meanwhile, the data also revealed 75 percent of breeders said their "personal commitment to Jesus Christ" is still important, while only 58 percent of gays said so. We blame this guy.

She doesn't annoy me at all. I thought she was such a good sport when the rest of the main BM cast got much more accolades and even went to the GG show, which Jake didn't go to. Rumor has it he was jealous of Heath and pissed that Jarhead wasn't the expected success.
I was in the minority thiking that her telephone scene with Heath was better than Michelle's entire performance. I've always said it and I repeat it that she'll stay the biggest star of the entire (living) bunch and she'll one day be among the big, respected women in Hollywood. Mark my words.

I do think Jake will have a pretty solid career though.

I don't think so, he's not heartless. HL had so much bad luck up until BM. His career just started after it. TDK would have made him a star, A-List. Poor fellow didn't live long enough to witness it. We've got to hand it to Reese Witherspoon, who's still in town filming that rom-com we keep telling you about. She sure must be nice.

The actress and boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal stopped by the Rita's Italian Ice in Adams Morgan on Wednesday afternoon (both ordered the lemonade flavor, if you're interested). Then they agreed to the staff's request of a $1 donation for pediatric cancer research, even signing those paper lemons that go up on the wall. Easy enough.

But it was Witherspoon's next move -- ordering enough Italian ice for the entire crew of her film -- that went the extra mile. She arranged for it to be delivered to the movie set around midnight.

In other Reese/Jake/movie news, Gyllenhaal and six friends went back to Oyamel, site of a cast party earlier this week, for dinner Thursday night (sans Witherspoon, who was working). Co-stars Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson toured the Newseum with Gyllenhaal yesterday afternoon.

Most Eurpean actors studied acting in university and there are so many great actors there who are better than most of this Hollywood crap actors, but don't even get paid a third of what the spoild Hollywood "stars" get paid.

At least singers, especially the ones who write their own songs can be called artists. Using the word "artist" for most of these Hollywood losers is an insult.

Antonio Banderas: No Pardon for Kissing a Man on the Mouth said...

PopWrap interviews Antonio Banderas about his career. Banderas recalls that when he was in Law of Desire, kissing a man was more frowned upon than killing one. Likely still true today.

Said Banderas: "Everything changes as you get older -- your mind, your body, the way you view the world. For example the scenes I did with [director Pedro] Almodovar in the 80's were very tough to play at the time it was not common for actors to play gay. Many actors thought that if you played those scenes, everybody would identify you with that role...I felt very early on in my professional life that where there were limits, there shouldn't have been limits. I remember in 'Law of Desire,' where I played a homosexual, that people were more upset that I kissed a man on the mouth than I killed a man. It's interesting to see how people can pardon you for murdering a man, but they can't pardon you for kissing one. It's a very interesting approach to morality in our days, so you see there is an incredible amount of hypocritical judgment over those things."

Jealous of Heath - there was nothing to be jealous of, it's not like Jake and his BBMt performance was ignored
.

Are you kidding? It's well known that Jake was pissy and pouting after Annie Proulx said Heath Ledger's name should be Heath Legend and the New York Times's Stephen Holden compared him to Brando.

Proulx later tried to massage Jake's ego by saying that by singling out Heath, she didn't mean to slight Jake's magnificent performance, etc etc. Warm leftovers are still leftovers.

Meanwhile Pete Travers at RS was writing,"Ledger's magnificent performance is an acting miracle. He seems to tear it from his insides." And so on.

If you think Jake didn't care about all that, you don't understand actors. Yeah Jake won an award from the Brits and got his share of good reviews, but Heath's performance is the one that, right from the start, has been revered by actors that other actors idolize. Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman, Philip Seymour Hoffman (whom Heath went out dancing all night with before the Oscars). Again, if you think a mini-diva like Jake didn't or doesn't feel some emotional rivalry, you are naive.
