Bearding isn't Cool

Adam Lambert on making his sexuality public:

There are so many old-fashioned ways of looking at things, and if we want to be a progressive society, we have to start thinking in a different way. There's the old industry idea that you should just make sexuality a non-issue, just say your private life's your private life, and not talk about it. But that's bullshit, because private lives don't exist anymore for celebrities: they just don't.

I don't want to be looking over my shoulder all the time, thinking I have to hide, being scared of being found out, putting on a front, having a beard, going down the red carpet with some chick who is posing as my girlfriend.

That's not cool, that's not being a rock star. I can't do that.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy at home"

LOL. My conservative church-going aunt & uncle avoided acknowledging that my cousin (their son) was gay (and he was obvious) UNTIL the other son who was straight and promiscuous got 2 gfs pregnant in hs and they had to pay for the abortions. After that they were more than happy to have a gay son. They wouldn't let my straight cousin have girls in his room with the door closed but my gay cousin could have his bfs spend the night because "Greg can't get any of his boyfriends pregnant."

Even if it was for the wrong reasons, i'm glad that your cousin is accepted by his father now.

and message to Greg: you can't get your guys pregnant but still, please, be careful with deseases and crabs.

Appart of that,
enjoy your life,honey!! :)

I'm very optimistic. If conservative religious people can embrace abortion, maybe they'll change their minds about homosexuality some day too.

When I was 5, I would stop whatever I was doing when the neighbor across the street cut his grass. I would just sit on the stoop and stare. He was built, and all he wore were cut-offs and sneakers. He would always wave at me.

You mean aside from giving nightly karaoke performances of Bette Midler's Divine Madness in my bedroom after dinner or spending the entire summer of 1982 working out my rendition of Jennifer Holliday's And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going all day long until several neighbours posted "for sale" signs on their front lawns and would shout out, "...just GO ALREADY FOR FUCK'S SAKE YOU BIG FAG!"?

Um, not really.

Now wait a second - my musician friends and I used to always get together and sing in high school and college, and my BF too, and I can assure you he wasn't gay. He knew as much about and loved music as I did. I also grew up in a very creative, artistic summer community, and not everyone was gay who was a singer, musician, actor or writer.

California Gov Schwarzenegger Affirms Validity Of Prop 8 Lawsuit.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says a federal lawsuit challenging California's gay marriage ban poses a valid legal question that should be decided by the courts.

Schwarzenegger's position came in a court filing Tuesday, his deadline to respond to the lawsuit filed on behalf of two unmarried same-sex couples who want to overturn Proposition 8.

Heading the legal team for the couples are famed attorneys David Boies and Theodore Olson, who opposed each other in the 2000 presidential election challenge.

Last week, California Attorney General Jerry Brown filed his response, saying he agrees that Proposition 8 violates the U.S. Constitution's promise of equal protection and due process.

Schwarzenegger didn't elaborate on the merits of the lawsuit, only saying that it "presents important constitutional questions.

Los Angeles' A-Gays Gather at Roland Emmerich + Bryan Singer's Post-Pride Party

Whenever there's something gay in Los Angeles, there is always an after party at 2012 director Roland Emmerich's estate. With Valkyrie director-producer Bryan Singer (pictured, left) at his side, the A-gays gather to pay their respects — before stripping down to their Speedos and diving into the pool. With West Hollywood's gay pride parade yesterday, it only made sense Emmerich would once again open up his gates to LA's gays. One attendee sends photo evidence of the fracas, which came complete with Candis Cayne performing with a Jaws theme (she ended up in getting "attacked," ended up in the pool, and "blood" going everywhere) — although the photos shuttled to our inbox shows less performance, more "attempting to stand."

Alas, we cannot confirm whether involuntarily adult film star Dustin Lance Black attended last night's soiree, as he's been known to.

And sorry, no photos of the after-after party (which generally has a clothing-optional policy), nor do we have pictures from what happened when Roland and Bryan (pictured, Page 3) took a few select young men into the house for private casting sessions.

SHE'S HOT FOR TEACHER RANDI

THEY could be the lesbian power couple of all time: Randi Weingarten, the new president of the 1.4 million-member American Federation of Teachers, is dating Hilary Rosen, former head of the Recording Industry Association of America, who appears on CNN and is Washington, DC, editor-at-large for the Huffington Post.

Both women regularly appear on lists of the most powerful women in the US. Tonight, the lovebirds and Kennedy cousin Mark Shriver are co-hosting a party at Art & Soul in DC to launch Julianne Moore's children's book, "Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully."

A rep for Weingarten at the 110,000-member United Federation of Teachers, which she's run since 1998, said, "We don't discuss Randi's personal life." Rosen declined to comment. But a friend said, "They are definitely dating."

Weingarten went public with her same-sexuality in 2007, when she was honored by Empire State Pride Agenda and introduced Liz Margolies, a psychotherapist and health care activist, as her partner.

Rosen resigned as head of the RIAA in 2003, saying she wanted to spend more time with her partner, Elizabeth Birch, and the couple's twins, a boy and a girl.

""There's no obvious reason why sexual orientation should be associated with how masculine or feminine one is, but it is in our species. And it probably has to do with the causes of sexual orientation and early effects of hormones on the brain," Bailey said.

Bailey did a survey of professional dancers and found half the men were gay. But why? "Because dancing is a feminine occupation," he said.

We visited the Pennsylvania Ballet to ask its male dancers what they thought of the stereotype. "People talk about it. It's no big deal, and as a matter of fact, it's almost celebrated if you're gay," said dancer Meredith Rainey. "So what if there are a lot of gay men in dance? I think it's a good thing."

Gay Stereotypes: Are They True?

Anonymous said...

Personally, I don't think dancing is masculine nor feminine, nor are musicals. Of course it's a good thing, nor is it a big deal, where or where not the majority of careers have gay men, I think the whole fixation on someone's sexuality, and even worse, the jokes about it, are ridiculous. It's a kind of homophobia.

Anonymous said...

I also really hate these "scientific explanations" for what makes someone gay or not. The implication is it is against the "norm", which is an insult. Why can't whether or not someone is gay or straight just be, and be part of the grand plan? Why does there have to be a "reason" for why people love who they do? It just is. People's thoughts and feelings are very complex.

Anonymous said...

"The implication is it is against the "norm", which is an insult."

I'm not gay, but I'm a geek and I love being against the "norm".

Anthropologically, men have been dancing since the beginning of civilization, it's a human thing, not a gender related thing. It's human expression and artistic, creative expression.

Do you think that gay people should try to 'fit in' in order to be accepted or get equal rights, to try to be as 'normal' as possible?

Anonymous said...

NOOOOOO - not at all, that's my point. I think people are saying just the opposite, and have for years, with race, religion, etc. Differences should not enter into whether a person has civil rights, that's a given for all human beings. I think the latest we read from Washington about DOMA is a big disappointment.

Yes. And that's why I put norm in quotes, there is no such thing, except for a false assumption by the majority of the population. People can be whatever they want to be, and shouldn't be judged, categorized, analyzed, stereotyped.

I see nothing wrong with stating the truth, that certain professions, forms of entertainment, etc. draw a lot of gay men and lesbians. That's not homophobic. What is homophobic is to devalue those things based on who likes them, i.e., ballet is bad because women and gay men like it, but football is good because straight men like it.

Nice to see a list that doesn't have all the usual suspects. But there are two whose appeal I just don't get at all--Shia and Pattinson.

Nice to see Adam and the Rock on it.

Reese Witherspoon is in Washington shooting How Do You Know showing off a wicked bitchface. Not sure if the cameras were rolling when these were taken but a reader called Catherine (thanks Catherine!) was there this morning and observed that America’s Sweetheart isn’t exactly the sweetest on set.

You’d think she’d be the type, given her public image, to be the one offering baked goods to everyone and leading people on singalongs but in reality, apparently Reese rarely engages, keeps to herself, has not been socialising, laughing, chatty with crew, curiously in sharp contrast to Angelina Jolie who was working in the capitol not long ago and was extremely approachable and tight with production staff.

What?

You mean Reese Witherspoon isn’t made of sugar?

Please.

The sugar comes out strategically. The spice and the ICE are the everyday.

Is Our Obsession With 'Straight-Acting' Guys Perverse (And Really Harmful)? said...

Little girls who act like boys are known as tomboys. Little boys who act like girls are known as faggots. My friend Charles and I were faggots at eight years-old. He was constantly reprimanded by teachers for screaming like a girl at recess. He could reach Mariah Carey ear-bloodying pitches. If he has transitioned to a female I would not be surprised—look me up on Facebook, girl!

My mother grew up in Texas, the only girl among two football-playing brothers and an ex-military father. As a child, I was probably the gayest person she had ever met. She struggled with wanting me to be happy, wanting to protect me, and probably being embarrassed my effeminate behavior. She allowed me to have the movie, Grease, as my Bar-Mitzvah party theme (complete with larger-than-life cutouts of the Pink Ladies) Oh, and she would tap my wrists to let me know when they were limp.

Charles and I were at my house, busy dressing up, satiating our repressed femininity like a stoner munching out on Cool Ranch Doritos. Sashaying to a Pointer Sisters cassette tape, my mother knocked on the door. I frantically threw a sweatshirt on over my dress, struggling to get into a pair of sweatpants but like all dramatic stories, it was too late. She barged in and caught us with our dresses down, so to speak.

She yanked my ass downstairs and into her Laura Ashley-clad bedroom. Sitting on the edge of her bed, naked except for a bathrobe and one roller in the front of her hair, she slapped me in the face. It wasn’t an angry slap; it was a panicked slap. Then she cried and made me an appointment with a psychologist.

Is Our Obsession With 'Straight-Acting' Guys Perverse (And Really Harmful)? said...

A (former) friend of mine once advised me that if I wanted to get a date, I should “tone it down.” “Don’t tell them you love Belinda Carlisle’s vibrato, Bette Davis’ staccato, and the girls of The Facts of Life—not on the first date.” Do I have to trick someone into tolerating my femme qualities? Fuck that.

For a college course, I combed through the Village Voice's male-for-male personal ads from 1970-2000 seeking trends in gay men’s ideals of attractiveness. The one constant across the 30-year period was the long-standing “No Fats, No Femmes” sentiment. Although my research is far from scientific I find personal ads to be a reasonable litmus test on this subject especially when they are easily accessible and free.

Scanning the pages of Los Angeles m4m listings, the same words keep popping up: regular, normal, straight, frat, ex-frat, bi, straight-acting, discreet, and married. I’m sure many of these men are married—to other men.

Anyone looking for a queen? Let’s see. Keyword search: femme.

In the past seven days, 14 ads are posted containing the word “femme.” Five specify no femmes. Out of the nine pro-femme ads, I am ineligible for my favorite: “Michelle Kwan roleplay for cute asian.” Curses.

The word “discreet” comes up in over one thousand postings. It is the new “straight-acting.” There are two spellings of the word “discreet.” The other spelling, “discrete,” means distinct, separate, and individual. That is the antithesis of what these Craigslisters want in a man. Discrete’s double-E’d sister is marked by modesty and prudence—two of my least favorite words.

“Wise self-restraint,” the second definition of “discreet,” is most applicable to the performance of straight-acting.

When I attempt to be straight-acting, whether it is for a laugh or to rapidly attain meaningless sex, I suspend all movement. Gone are the gesticulations, the rubber-faces, or the rolling of eyeballs. They are replaced with—well—nothing. Speaking in a low monotone, any semblance of personality evaporates. To be discreet, less is more.

Straightacting.com became well-known in 2000 for its “famous Straight-Acting Quiz.” Multiple choice questions determine your level of straight-actingness. Or lack thereof. Questions range from how much you enjoy receiving flowers and the frequency you say “pee-pee” instead of penis, to how publicly affectionate you're willing to be with your partner in a “non-gay environment.” Upon my arrival, any environment turns gay.

A Level 2 (Very Straight Acting) person is described as having “carefully crafted” actions “in a way that they never appear to be considered too fem.” This is the very essence of straight-acting: the utter calculation of every movement, every word that comes out of your discreetly dick-eating mouth. Kooky Level 6s, on the other hand, enjoy exploring their feminine side. “Most people just assume you are gay…which is just fine with you.” But not fine with the creators and patrons of this site who hold faux masculinity in the highest regard.

The intelligentsia behind StraightActing.com chalk up their penchant for straight-acting men to simple preference: “Just as people have preferences for the type of guys they like, for example, ‘Tall men,’ many of us have a preference for ‘straight acting’ men—Men that (sic) have very few effeminate traits but still like to get down with other men.” Get down with other men? Is that some demented idea of how masculine men speak? Cue effeminate eye-rolling. More importantly, their glorification of straight-acting is not preference, it is bias.

For the men of StraightActing.com and the allegedly married-to-women, bisexual, ex-frat boys of Craigslist, I empathize with you. I get it. I hope for both you and me that we can expand our ideals of beauty and evolve into a state of self love. Here’s to becoming more discrete.

And less discreet.

Maybe the editor meant to name Chase the No Face Cat as the hottest bachelorette and the message somehow got lost in translation? That would've made complete sense.

The rest of People's hottest bachelors include Chris Pine (eh), Glamberace (sure), Shia LaDouche (his mom concurs), Brody Jenner (People is having a laugh, now), Common (I co-sign) and RPattz. It's Ramona and he has looked even more wary in other pics. If he was so keen to keep a baby a secret he sure the hell wouldn't take the kid to Kennsington park of all places.

We have never seen Jake in pap pics alone with Ramona, usally it's with Maggie and Peter. The closest was a few years ago in Ny where when he was pushing her in a stroller. Once he saw the paps, he took off like a bat out of hell, which was careless IMO.

Maggie and Peter try to e careful and not have Ramona papped, I think that most of the pics her face is hidden, only a few sets where you her face and I assume they were not aware they were being papped.

I was pointing out that he seems so far not to be papped with his niece not because I think he's a sex offender, take your mind out of the gutter.

Guilt: remember babygate? It was his fandom that created that and IMO created Cuntara's obsession with his online fandom but that's another story.

I think he feels that pics if him alone with his niece will get more of a squee thing going and exploited then him with her and the whole family, geez.

People Hugely Misfires With Chace Crawford

So…People named Chace Crawford its Hottest Bachelor. Give us a girlie-looking break! People is really on our sh-t list right now. All they focus on anymore is the "hotness" that is Gyllenspoon coffee breaks, and now—for an issue that has the chance to completely ooze with sex—they pick a frontman who is so dang pretty and boring, there's nothing steaming about him. Where's Chace's string of lady conquests, à la George Clooney? Isn't that what a bachelor is supposed to be—handsome, delicious and out of your league?

This mag used to get it right, pre the media-mainstream Matthew McConaughey days, picking the likes of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and young Brad Pitt to grace its covers. Those were real men.

Anonymous said...

To me it doesn't matter if he's smiling or not, what matters is that he is still in Europe with his family and NOT with the Chin. I hope he spends the entire summer over there with his family and away from Witherbeard. Hopefully this is the beginning of the "break up" of Reeke.

T.R. Knight: Broadway on the Brain said...

What's next for T.R. Knight?

Now that he's hanging up his Grey's Anatomy scrubs, I'm told Mr. Knight is in a New York state of mind.

"He wants to get to New York and do theater," a source said, "but there are no done deals yet."

Back in March, it was reported that he took part in a reading for a Broadway revival of Lend Me Tenor directed by Stanley Tucci and also including Alfred Molina, Tony Shalhoub, Jan Maxwell and Marian Seldes.

As I was the first to report, Knight is saying bye-bye to Grey's Anatomy after he asked to be let go because he was unhappy with his diminished presence on the show.

Knight appeared opposite Patti LuPone in a 2001 revival of Noises Off as well as in the 2003 production of Tartuffe. He last appeared on the New York stage five years ago off-Broadway in the drama Boy.

FRANKENSTEIN'S BRIDE GETS SEX APPEAL

BRIAN Grazer is remaking "The Bride of Frankenstein," but this time, the female monster is going to be a babe. "She'll be young. They're looking for a person with great power and sex appeal," a Hollywood insider told us.

"Someone along the lines of Scarlett Johansson or Anne Hathaway." In the 1935 original, the frizzy-haired bride was played by bug-eyed English actress Elsa Lanchester. The new Universal Pictures/Imagine Entertainment version, first disclosed by The Hollywood Reporter, will be helmed and co-scripted by Neil Burger, who wrote and directed "The Illusionist."

FAMILY GUY PENN HAS PUZZLING MOVES

HOLLYWOOD is stunned and perplexed by Sean Penn's recent moves. After recon ciling with his long-suffering wife Robin Wright Penn (for the second time in 18 months), Penn canceled two movie projects and announced he's putting his career on hold to spend more time with his family. The Oscar winner pulled out of "Cartel," about a man who goes to Mexico to protect his son after a drug gang murders his mother. He also nixed playing Larry in "The Three Stooges" with Jim Carrey as Curly and Be nicio Del Toro as Moe. As Cindy Adams reported yesterday, some think Natalie Portman is to blame. Though the beauty, 27, denied she and Penn, 48, were ever an item, they were reported hanging out together at a West Hollywood bar two weeks after Penn filed for a legal separation in April. So some speculate Penn went back to his wife after Portman broke his heart.

Posted on OMG by M

Today is my day to work from home, so I put the TV on in the background, and flipped the channel guide a few times. Up turned Josh and Sam, a Jake movie I had never seen and just starting to boot, so I watched. Granted he was 12 or 13 at most when he made it, and it's a very small part, but the interesting thing is that most of his role was to harass his step brother for possibly being a homosexual. What a message to learn so early. By that age he would have been aware of his own attraction to males.

All of the honorees from film and television were present, with actors from their projects presenting them. Ang Lee ("Brokeback Mountain") was introduced by the quiet, softspoken Heath Ledger and the charming and gregarious Jake Gyllenhaal. They talked about what an honor and a privilege working on the film had been and how Ang's direction helped them grow as actors. When Heath and Jake introduced him, they both started to tear up and gave the director hugs when he reached the stage. The soft-spoken director took a moment, looked back at them with a smile, turned to the audience and said, "I don't know, guys. That felt kind of gay to me."

Talk about exploding a stereotype! We must have laughed for five solid minutes!

There was joke after joke about "Brokeback" all evening, and not a single one was derogatory or mean-spirited. That's entertainment.

Ricky Martin (Almost!) Comes Out said...

Back in 2005, sometimes pop star and golden shower lover Ricky Martin told Barbara Walters, "I think that sexuality is something that each individual should deal with in their own way. And that's all I have to say about that." It certainly didn't help all that gay speculation! Four years later, it appears Martin, who's been out of the public eye for a bit, doesn't really care.

He tells Spanish-language TV Aqui magazine that "'his heart could belong to a woman or a man." Of course his publicist could always backtrack and say he was referring to his two twin baby boys (born via surrogate).

Ted's latest missive about Reeke is a scream. You rock, Ted!

Anonymous said...

He tells Spanish-language TV Aqui magazine that "'his heart could belong to a woman or a man.

Queerty comment:

Actually, he said (in Spanish and in response to the question "to whom belongs Ricky Martin's heart?"): "Ricky Martin's heart? Look, um, whether (my heart) has or does not have a (male or female) owner I've never talked about that topic, so yeah…"

So, it's not exactly saying it could have a male or female owner, but rather an outright refusal to address the question. In fact, by saying "dueño o dueña", adding dueña as a qualifying statement or afterthought to the initial phrase "(male) owner" may have been his way of saying that his heart does not have a male owner.

He's an Anderson Cooper when it comes to these things. And if he hasn't said it by now, the likelihood is that he won't ever declare his sexual identity.

Anonymous said...

"Look, um, whether (my heart) has or does not have a (male or female) owner I've never talked about that topic, so yeah…"

GLAAD is concerned about Sacha Baron Cohen's depiction of homosexuality in Brüno:

"We have very mixed emotions about the movie," says GLAAD's Rashad Robinson. "Those of us who saw the film agreed that you can't critique it as a single film because it's more like 90 minutes of individual sketches. Some are funny and hit their mark but others hit the [gay] community instead." GLAAD is asking for a bit where a baby is sitting in the same hot tub where two men are having sex be cut. "As someone who sat at the back of a focus group audience outside of Los Angeles, I felt they were laughing at us at times." [E!]

Anonymous said...

^^I agree, it's very sad, and shouldn't have happened. I also agree that people severely underestimate the effects of mixing pills, I think our society is too "pill happy", demanding a quick fix and a pill for everything. The doctors ultimately prescribe these things, and they are not babes in the woods dealing with pharma salesmen, IMO. Maybe if the companies are guility of anything, it's over zealous selling, and doing things to gain a competitive edge that the FDA frowns upon, but the doctors ultimately are the ones that accept, and the high price of marketing drugs leads to high prices for consumers, but in the long run, the development of drugs is a benefit to mankind.
