This Is a Question of Fairness

It is by no means a fast and easy path, but the cause of same-sex marriage is moving forward — proof that justice can triumph over wedge politics and prejudice. It happened this week in Maine and New Hampshire, where both states’ legislatures voted to legalize same-sex marriage and promptly put the final say to their governors.

In New Hampshire, Gov. John Lynch — who previously defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman — promised his “best decision” after consulting lawmakers and constituents. Mr. Lynch would be wise also to consult his neighbor in Maine, Gov. John Baldacci, who signed his state’s same-sex marriage bill. He previously had opposed the idea, with the familiar hedge of supporting the half-step of civil unions.

Mr. Baldacci described his change of heart — and what we hope is the changing sentiment of many other American politicians. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage,” he said. Precisely.

Maine was the fifth state to legalize same-sex marriage. We urge Mr. Lynch to make New Hampshire the sixth. Similar proposals are pending in other states, with a major debate expected in the New York Legislature.

This week, the City Council of the District of Columbia took a preliminary step, voting 12 to 1, to recognize marriages between gay people certified in other states. A fuller debate is anticipated on a proposal to legalize same-sex unions. Unfortunately, there already are calls for Congress to once more tread on home rule and block this progress in the nation’s capital.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is right to caution against such grandstanding. Governor Baldacci heard the people speak. Congress should listen.

Yes, I don't mind the husband/wife titles, as long as they don't come with the stereotypical gender role assumption - partner is more generic sounding, but more equal IMO. But kinda blah, wife or husband does have more warmth. :)/

Absolutely, "partner" is too generic.

"Partner" is progressive. Straight couples should use it, too. IMHO

"They All Want To Be Sinatra" Dlisted comment:

The only one that truly has the potential to play Frank is Jake.

Homegirl is the only one that will be able to shake his ass to the music like a true queen.

Plus, he'll be saving Martin some cash monies. Jake can take care of all of the choreography by himself!

Guys, We Were Just Kidding About that Jamie Foxx as Frank Sinatra Thing said...

Last week we made a joke that Jamie Foxx should play Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorsese's upcoming biopic about the singer. Well, now Brit tabloids are making the same joke, except they call it "reporting." It appears that the Daily Express heard from an "inside source" (who we suspect either doesn't exist or reads Gawker) that the Ray Oscar winner was in the running for the role, because of his innate abilities:

"Magnificent singing voice, totally convincing acting ability, like Frank himself, born the wrong side of the tracks, rags to riches, makes it big against the odds, has his brushes with authority. The guy's a gift."

So giddy with this bizarre news were other tabloids that they ran with it, even though the whole thing is obviously bollocks. But try telling that to publications like the Telegraph, who heralded the "colour-blind casting" rumor with abandon, and to Brit-in-exile Tina Brown, whose Daily Beast website posted the news this morning.

But yeah, we bet you quid to quinces that someone's just having a laugh. Though who knows! I mean, guys, we have a black president. Anything can happen! Racially speaking!

You know how this experiment goes: Guys agree to let researchers measure how erect they get when they watch porn, and the guys who self-identify as homophobes get the most turned on, showing off the "12 millimeters of mercury" … in growth. But when asked how aroused they got? That same crowd denied it.

Latent homosexuality is an erotic inclination toward members of the same sex that is not consciously experienced or expressed in overt action. This may mean a hidden inclination or potential for interest in homosexual relationships, which is either suppressed or not recognised, and which has not yet been explored "for real" or may never be explored in fact.

"Interview with Michelle promoting SYN (She talks working with Ang and mentions Jake and Heath)"

Q: You are best known for your role in Brokeback Mountain where you worked with director Ang Lee. What was he like to work with?

MW: "With me he was very compassionate. He was almost like a woman he was just so gentle. He would just literally hold my hand and rub my back and say ‘I know, I know, I know'. He was just so dear to me. I think it's because that's what I needed, I think that's what he saw. I've noticed personally, I'm shy and I work best when I feel like somebody trusts me. When I worked with Todd Haynes and I was trying to do something that I'd never really done before and play this character that was very outward and edicentric creation I was nervous and it was all new to me, every time he would say ‘Great, do it again'. And I just got the sense that even if it wasn't great I blossomed because I felt so free and confident. I could make mistakes and I couldn't see him panic ever and he trusted me enough to make mistakes and not get nervous. And I think Ang probably saw something similar but with the boys [Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal] he was very tough. He would give more notes to the boys. They would do some big meaty scene and ask ‘How was that? How was that?' and all he would say was ‘Light was good.' And they had just poured their hearts out, so I guess that's what makes a good director too. Knowing what each actor needs."

I used to like MW. There is something so fragile and soft in her personality, it made me feel so concerned about her.
Then, the all Heath spliting/dying issue came and i felt even more sympathy for her :(

But she puts the same f*king face in every f**king movie she makes and i already got tired of her "acting"

Good luck to her and her daughter and Spike, though. But i won't pay for a ticket to any of her movies.

THE SAME GOES FOR YOU,TOOTHY!

PS. Jake if you're reading this before you start celebrating that people are falling for your bearding routine, this is pussy as in weak spineless scaredy-cat, NOT hetero pussy chaser.

OT but funny. Ryan Reynolds could be Jake in real life, the other 2 the Chin.

Reese Witherspoon completely ignored me, and the look that Jake Gyllenhaal gave me—one of complete irritation and distain—has lingered in the part of my brain that regulates self-esteem ever since.

in comments: Uhg, this must have been the same look of distain and disgust that Jake gave me at Stubbs...

Yep they deserve each other.

...I agree. Michelle is a decent actress, but I always thought Anne was better and more versatile. Michelle seems nice and down to earch though.

As for Jake's POP, not interested in the film at all. The only film of his I could be interested in is Nailed, but who knows when/if that one will come out.

That would be disdain, right? I wouldn't expect anything less from the Reeke. They are movie stars, and we are just mere peons.

Jake was with the chin - what did he expect? lol

"Yep they deserve each other."

Jake and Reese seem to be prepotential assholes. Everything he did will come back to haunt him. Look at his movies, pushed back. And POP is a joke. He's a major fail.

Well sure he was nice then. He was stuck on a plane and she knew how to open the doors.

Look at the people Jake surrounds himself with, Reese, Jamie Fox, RDJ etc. And he himself has A-List aspirations, although many consider him as A-List anyway.
If his career goes well (in future) I think he'll become even more arrogant. That's honestly how I feel. This brings me to the godfather thing. As I've said, I would bet that he thinks it isn't very prestigeous to be the godfather of Dawson's Creek's Michelle William's kid. It was a different matter when HL was still alive, whom he seemed to admire much. Jake's parents chose Jamie Lee Curtis as godmother and Paul Newman as celeb godfather. See how they want to be in the in crowd? And Jake is now godfather to Michelle William's kid. LOL. I don't mean to downgrade Michelle, but even though she's a fine actress, she'll probably never be in that in, A-List crowd.
