This Is a Question of Fairness

It is by no means a fast and easy path, but the cause of same-sex marriage is moving forward — proof that justice can triumph over wedge politics and prejudice. It happened this week in Maine and New Hampshire, where both states’ legislatures voted to legalize same-sex marriage and promptly put the final say to their governors.

In New Hampshire, Gov. John Lynch — who previously defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman — promised his “best decision” after consulting lawmakers and constituents. Mr. Lynch would be wise also to consult his neighbor in Maine, Gov. John Baldacci, who signed his state’s same-sex marriage bill. He previously had opposed the idea, with the familiar hedge of supporting the half-step of civil unions.

Mr. Baldacci described his change of heart — and what we hope is the changing sentiment of many other American politicians. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage,” he said. Precisely.

Maine was the fifth state to legalize same-sex marriage. We urge Mr. Lynch to make New Hampshire the sixth. Similar proposals are pending in other states, with a major debate expected in the New York Legislature.

This week, the City Council of the District of Columbia took a preliminary step, voting 12 to 1, to recognize marriages between gay people certified in other states. A fuller debate is anticipated on a proposal to legalize same-sex unions. Unfortunately, there already are calls for Congress to once more tread on home rule and block this progress in the nation’s capital.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is right to caution against such grandstanding. Governor Baldacci heard the people speak. Congress should listen.

'Gossip Girl' guy Ed Westwick has landed a role to move him off televisions and onto the big screen in a new version of 'Wuthering Heights.' According to Variety, he will play Heathcliff alongside Bond girl Gemma Arterton as Cathy.

Project has also seen a number of cast changes. Natalie Portman was originally tapped to play the role of Cathy. Scheduling conflicts saw her exit the project before being replaced by Abbie Cornish. Arterton will now play the iconic romantic role after producers opted to go younger with the pic.

For those unfamiliar with the 'Gossip Girl' oeuvre, below is a slideshow of Westwick over the bet few years.

Reese Witherspoon considers Jake Gyllenhaal for a revenge rebound romance?

Friends of Hollywood beauty, Reese Witherspoon want her to consider hunky Jake Gyllenhaal for a revenge rebound romance to mend her broken heart reports NW Magazine!

Witherspoon filed for divorce from Ryan Phillippe. The Oscar-winning actress cited irreconcilable differences and has asked for joint custody of the couple's children - seven-year-old Ava and three-year-old Deacon - but is seeking physical custody with visitation rights granted to her husband.

In the court papers filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Witherspoon, 30, also requests that the court not grant spousal support for Phillippe.

Yesterday, Phillippe issued an exclusive statement to PEOPLE , saying, “I’m not a perfect person, but I’m not guilty of a lot of the things I have been accused of. My priority is and always has been the health and safety of my family."

It was alleged last week that the cause for the break-up Ryan's affair with Australian actress Abbie Cornish, his co-star in independent film 'Stop Loss'.

Reese Witherspoon and Jake, one of the movie industry's most eligible bachelors, are set to get together at the end of this month to film the CIA thriller Rendition.

Reese's friends predict the two may simply be unable to resist each other. Jake has a determined track record of seducing his female leads, and career-conscious Reese knows a hot new leading man is just what she needs. "They're both young, talented and magical. I'm sure sparks will fly," says Clifford Streit, the producer of Reese's hit film American Psycho.

Reese's friends say Jake is perfect for the actress — because he's the opposite of Ryan. "Jake is just the type of guy Reese needs round right now. It's going to be a huge boost for her ego, spending time with someone who shares so many of her values," says an insider.

Unlike the party-hard Ryan, Jake is a private man who shies away from the spectacle of Hollywood. And, like Reese, he loves to spend time at home, walking his dogs and staying in shape. "Jake is everything Ryan isn't — he's grounded, he's a family man, he loathes the party scene and, most important, he's a one-woman guy," says an insider. Adds the source, "Jake is ripe for the picking. He hasn't had a serious relationship since splitting with Kirsten Dunst two years ago. He has a history of romancing his beautiful co-stars. When he makes eyes at Reese, you can bet there'll be fireworks."

Picking up the pieces after the end of her seven-year marriage, Reese is determined to handle her divorce with dignity – with or without a new man on her arm.
"She's moving full-speed ahead. She cares more about being embarrassed than about anything else, really," says a pal. "She's determined to handle the split with poise. She doesn't want a long and protracted divorce battle, but if Ryan fires the first shot, she's ready to fire back. Reese is not going to let Ryan walk all over her anymore."

He didn't get drunk to celebrate Abby's film, it had nothing to do with that.

He should learn to keep a lid on that on such a big stage.

I'm not a Reese fan, but Ryan is a loser who constantly cheated on her. He behaved like a punk in Cannes, Abbie and friends had to take the drunk idiot home.
I'm sure Jake was initially very glad to be of Reese's interest, her being a new Oscar winner with past B.O. hits. Not bad at all being attached to her at the time. He back then had BBM and Jarhead success and was HOT. Though I think it's the real deal, I'm sure much of the hook up had to do with her wanting to show the world that she's still desirable and that hot young guys want her. I think it's her who arranges photo ops occasionally and I feel he is slowly getting tired of it.

Third-Grader Organizes Gay Marriage Rally said...

A Denver third-grader will be front and center at the Colorado State Capitol Saturday pushing for same sex marriage in the state.

Ethan McNamee arranged the rally as an independent class project. He was concerned about the issue after hearing about anti-gay remarks on the playground and then learning about a same sex couple in his neighborhood that couldn't get married.

"Everybody is different in a good way," he said. Ethan believes that if two people love each other that is the only issue to be considered.

Ethan took it upon himself to arrange the rally and line up the guest speakers. He admitted it was more work then he thought it would be, but adds it was fun.

Administrators at Montclair Elementary have been sensitive to the controversial issue. Parents were notified about Ethan's project and only students who wanted to get involved participated. A handful of kids helped Ethan make signs on Friday afternoon.

Ethan's teacher, Kyle Kimmal, said he was careful to not impose his views on Ethan. He also told Ethan that his stand could anger some classmates and parents and that he should be prepared for protestors at the state capitol.

STARS WANT TO PLAY FRANK SINATRA

MARTIN Scorsese is facing the challenge of his career casting an actor to play a young Frank Sinatra in his big-budget biopic about the Chairman of the Board.

But insiders tell us his short list for "Sinatra" is sure to include three-time Oscar nominee Johnny Depp and cocky newcomer James Franco, who both have the swagger -- and cheekbones -- to pull off a reasonable Ol' Blue Eyes. "One issue for Johnny is his age. He's 45. But he's youthful enough to play nearly anybody," a source said.

Other names we're hearing include Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Bublé and Jon Hamm.

And while there's been chatter about Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in the director's "The Departed" and "The Aviator," a source says it's unlikely, simply because Di- Caprio looks nothing like Sinatra.

Tina Sinatra, who gave Scorsese permission to use her father's recordings, will presumably have veto power over casting since she's an executive producer of the film. Meanwhile, Sinatra fanatics are weighing in with their choices. "I think Johnny Depp is the guy," Donald Trump told Page Six. "He's got Sinatra's angular face, and he's a great actor who can play anything from a pirate to a cross-dressing director in 'Ed Wood' to Willy Wonka."

Michael Feinstein, whose latest CD is "The Sinatra Project" and who will be playing the Loews Regency June 2 to 12, told us: "It should definitely be a strong actor with a physical resemblance, like James Marsden, so that they can use Sinatra's original vocals. Or else it should be Philip Seymour Hoffman, because he can play anybody."

And former Men's Fitness editor Neal Boulton said: "If he lost some weight and got fit again, Harry Connick Jr. could rock that role. He and I used to find ourselves on the same flight to and from LA . . . All he ever wanted was to be Frankie."

THE BLACK SINATRA said...

THE record shows he took the blows and did it his way but when it comes to who should play him in a movie, not even Sinatra himself could have second-guessed this.

As Cannes Film Festival-goers speculated excitedly last night about who would be cast as history’s greatest crooner, with George Clooney, Leonardo di Caprio, Harry Connick Jnr and Justin Timberlake all hotly tipped, one name stood out.

It was black American actor, stand-up comic and singer Jamie Foxx who was causing jaws to drop but asked about his suitability, a well-placed industry insider insisted: “Cool is colour-blind. Jamie would seem to be born to the role.” The source went on: “Magnificent singing voice, totally convincing acting ability, like Frank himself, born the wrong side of the tracks, rags to riches, makes it big against the odds, has his brushes with authority. The guy’s a gift.”

Foxx, 41, was adopted as a baby by his grandparents and raised a strict Baptist in a racially segregated Texan community. He first rose to prominence in 1999, in Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday and won a Best Actor Oscar as Ray Charles in the 2004 biopic Ray. As a singer he has a string of hit albums.

After many years the Sinatra clan has at last agreed to Martin Scorsese directing a biopic but how far they will let him delve into the dark side of Ol’ Blue Eyes, who died 11 years ago at the age of 82, and whether they will sanction Foxx in the role remains to be seen.

The FBI kept a 2,500-page dossier on Sinatra, who counted Mafia mobsters among his friends. From links with prostitutes to adultery with stunning actress Ava Gardner that led to divorce from first wife Nancy, there is plenty to get excited about.

Jake Gyllenhaal's ride to nowhere?

Published on July 27, 2006

Jake Gyllenhaal is the “it” guy of moviedom right now. Every time a new project is developed, his name comes up in the casting discussion, whether it’s for a 300-pound sumo wrestler, or a one-legged midget. He’s always been known for cherry-picking his parts (Jarhead especially comes to mind), so that’s why it’s bewildering that, with all these juicy roles being offered, Gyllenhaal wants to play Lance Armstrong in a Sony biopic of the seven-time Tour de France winner. The two were hanging at the TdF together all weekend as part of Jake’s getting-to-know-you method process. The pairing even threatened to eclipse the press coverage of the 2006 TdF winner, that other American, Floyd Landis. Gyllenhaal joined Armstrong in the Discovery team car for a ride-along during Saturday’s all-important individual time trial. The next day, Jake and Lance sat in a Paris hotel and watched Landis tour the Champs Élysées with yellow jersey intact, then receive his trophy.

Turns out the Oscar-nominated costar of Brokeback Mountain is a longtime cyclist and has already begun training for the film. Though one man is dark and the other fair, there’s little doubt that when the makeup artists are done, Jake and Lance will look like twins. Sure, an Armstrong biopic is a natural. So why did it take Hollywood so long to put one together? Well, producer Bill Gerber tried to sell it years ago, after reading Armstrong’s book It’s Not About the Bike. But Warner Bros. and HBO passed. Then producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy got lucky that Columbia Pictures production honcho Matt Tolmach is a cycling fanatic. I hear he can actually do some of those Tour de France–type climbs — though not as fast.

Given Armstrong’s unhappy youth, his sports prowess (first as a triathlete and then as a cyclist), his battle with cancer, his Live Strong yellow-wristband campaign, his cancer-foundation work, his epic TdF rides, his rivalry with cocky Jan Ullrich and upstart Ivan Basso, his love-hate relationship with the French, and his battle against doping accusations, it’s a heckuva tale. But what kind of role is it? The record shows that sports biopics get ignored at Oscar time. (Unlike, say, Nicolas Cage signing on to play Liberace. No, I’m not kidding.) Jake needs to keep his eye on Golden Boy — the statuette, not the cyclist.

UPDATE: Johnny Depp As Frank Sinatra?

Director Marty Scorsese may want Leonardo DiCaprio for the coming biopic about Frank Sinatra. (Just as Marty wanted Leo for Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, and soon Shutter Island.) But I hear Universal's first choice to fill the role may be Johnny Depp. The studio is thrilled with his performance in this summer's forthcoming Public Enemies and very much wants to stay in the Johnny Depp business. Besides, it's already been determined that the lead actor playing Sinatra won't be singing. The movie will feature Sinatra's own recordings thanks to a deal with Frank Sinatra Enterprises, guaranteeing the participation of the Sinatra estate and Warner Music Group. Besides, Scorsese and Depp have never worked together: that alone could be reason enough to see this pic.

He played Hercules role in an opera by Vivaldi(italian: "Ercole") live on stage at Spoleto Festival. Hercules is usually represented on the antique pottery wearing a lion's skin.

Well, there's always an avenue left for Jake to follow. PoP might take fashion hints from Ercole. ;)

The studio needs to stay out of it. Either they trust their director, or get a different director. If the people in the suits knew how to direct, they'd be doing it.

The good news and bad news about "Darko" sequel

Fine cast just can't rekindle humor and style of the original

Let me deliver the good news first: "S. Darko" is not the schlocky production many may be expecting. Visually, director Chris Fisher and cinematographer Marvin V. Rush do a lovely job of capturing the endless blue skies and mountainous landscapes of Utah, where the film was shot. They also have assembled an eclectic, interesting cast that includes Daviegh Chase (reprising her role from the first film as Donnie's little sister and Sparkle Motion dance troupe member Samantha Darko), Ed Westwick of "Gossip Girl," Jackson Rathbone from "Twilight," acting veteran John Hawkes ("You and Me and Everyone We Know") and a barely recognizable Elizabeth Berkley, who ditches her "Showgirls" alter ego to play a disturbingly devout Bible thumper.

Now, the bad news: The story "S. Darko" tells is just as derivative and empty as all those skeptical bloggers and their commenters feared. Instead of Donnie, our protagonist is Donnie's sister Sam (Chase), who has left behind the suburbs of Virginia to hit the road with her perpetually navel-baring friend Corey (Briana Evigan). After their car breaks down, they find themselves stuck in a small Utah town, at which point pretty much every concept and theme previously explored in "Donnie Darko" — a pending apocalyptic event, deceased individuals communicating with the living, really freaky rabbit imagery — are regurgitated and revisited, but with less humor, ominous foreshadowing and sense of style.

The "Darko" faithful are better off skipping the movie entirely and devoting their attention to the making-of featurette and the commentary track with Fisher, Rush and screenwriter Nathan Atkins, who finally get a chance to explain their decision to make this follow-up.

(The deleted scenes and the other featurette, on the other hand? Definitely skippable.) Ironically, even Fisher doesn't seem to have a handle on "S. Darko's" reason for being. "It's still a fun movie to think about," Fisher notes at one point during the commentary. "Whether it makes any sense or not, I'm not sure." For his part, Atkins makes it clear that he is a big fan of the original and therefore approached this project with some hesitation.

But he expresses hope that Kelly (and, presumably, the fans) will realize that "we were earnestly trying to pay homage to ('Donnie Darko') while also doing our own thing."

Cross posting this here and on OMG since I know a lot of people here are interested in gay marriage. I went to the rally here in NYC.

The rally was great, I see one of the things that happened at the rally is already making the rounds, Cynthia Nixon's announcement of her engagement. I knew Michael K. would have to rush that one out there. :-D

I maybe not have been able to see very well, but I could hear just fine. It opened with the cast of Hair doing several songs. Gavin Creel, one of the stars, is one of the founding members of the group that organized the rally. Cheyenne Jackson sang, and Cynthia spoke, as did David Hyde Pierce, who gave a very touching speech about how wonderful it was to get married after being with his partner for 25 years, and how the ring symbolizes everything they've done together, their family, their friends, I wish I could remember the exact words. There was also the usual assortment of local politicians, plus the Mayor and the Governor.

Then it was off to Star Trek, which I really enjoyed (not so much my gf and her mother). Saw it at an IMAX, which ran 3 or 4 ads, including Harry Potter--with Daniel Radcliff, who has been hanging with that performer, can't remember if she is transvestite, transexual or transgender--then an add for Transformers, which includes Megan Fox, then of course Star Trek, with Z. Quinto, who may be keeping it real.

All those stars, being true to themselves, some working for equality. When I think about it I just can't help that things are really beginning to shift. There's just so many exciting things happening, and with all that Jake just looks worse and worse to me, but with all that is going on, it doesn't bother me anymore because I do think somewhere out there is someone who is going to do what I had hoped Jake would do.

They All Want To Be Sinatra said...

Martin Scorcese is about to begin work on a splashy big-budget biopic of Frank Sinatra's life and every ho on this planet is willing to lick some nut in order to play Ol' Blue Eyes himself. Seriously, don't act like you haven't already e-mailed Martin Scorcese a YouTube clip of you wearing some broke ass fedora while singing "Strangers in the Night."

Everybody thinks Martin is going to cast Leonardo DiCaprio as Sinatra, because he can't take a doody without Leo in the room. But a source told Page Six that it doesn't seem likely, because Leo looks nothing like Sinatra. According to the source, Marty has narrowed it down to a few names including Johnny Depp and James Franco. Other hos in consideration are Jake Gyllenhaal, Harry Connick Jr. , Jon Hamm Michael Buble, Marky Mark and Justin Timberdouche. YES, Justin Timberdouche! Can I get an extra-large order of WTF?!

I mean, Justin is a big dick, so maybe he can play Sinatra's famously large peen, but that's it! If Martin casts Justin as Sinatra, it's time to shut down the movie-making business forever. The butchery has to end sometime! We can entertain ourselves with shadow puppets around the campfire.

And if Martin is really considering that dick bag Justin, he should give this versatile actor a shot first. STAINS will work for cupcakes!

Funny How this works

This is from People's Couple Watch - and this is how they appeared

• Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, having a mellow breakfast with friends at Lamill coffee boutique in L.A.'s trendy Silverlake neighborhood. After both ordering eggs, they were joined by another couple who brought their baby. "They were all very relaxed," says an onlooker. "There was a lot of laughter."

• Ryan Phillippe grooving out with girlfriend Abbie Cornish at the jumping Nikki Beach club, set up at the Cannes Film Festival. The pair is in the South of France for Cornish's film Bright Star, which is being screened at the film fest.

Reese has got to be on top. ALWAYS

Funny how that breakfast and coffee thing is so informative about some things and how there is no day mentioned in the People story and has bounced everywhere this weekend - certain details like dates - nail things down too much.

I'm actually disappointed in seeing the proactive reactions to Cannes by team Reese. You would think after all this time that she would be able to live her life and not obsess about what he's doing with another woman but obviously not.

Major Rallies For and Against Marriage Equality Ring Out in New York said...

Thousands of people attended a rally on Avenue of the Americas near Times Square yesterday sponsored by Broadway Impact in support of marriage equality in New York. A short time before that, state Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. bussed in approximately 10,000 evangelical bigots for an anti-gay rally of his own on Third Avenue in front of the Governor's office.

Attending the marriage equality rally were Paterson, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell, Empire State Pride Agenda executive director Alan van Capelle, statee Senator Tom Duane, and entertainers Cynthia Nixon (who announced her engagement to fiancee Christine Marinoni), Cheyenne Jackson, Audra McDonald, and Gavin Creel and the cast of Hair.

Joe.My.God has posted some great photos of the event. World of Wonder has an excellent gallery as well.

NYT: "Mr. Paterson, who appeared along with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (right: image NYDN) and other state and city leaders at a rally of gay rights activists near Rockefeller Center on Sunday afternoon, did not initially plan to attend. His last-minute appearance, which came just a few hours after thousands of same-sex marriage opponents held a much larger demonstration outside the governor’s Midtown Manhattan office, underscored the high stakes at issue in the Senate vote. 'We’re in a race right now in New York,' the governor told a crowd of several hundred people who gathered along Avenue of the Americas. 'The time for justice, the time for equality, the time for equal rights can never be any more urgent than right now.'"

The state legislature adjourns in six weeks. Sen. Tom Duane pleaded to the crowd: "There are 18 days left in the Senate session. I need your help."

Homos + Famous Persons Take Over NYC Streets Demanding Right to Throw Bouquet said...

There sure were a lot of homos gathered in New York City yesterday! Oh, and famous homo-loving celebrities! With same-sex marriage legislation passed by the New York State Assembly and OK'd by Gov. David Paterson, it's just a matter of getting the Senate to come around. Which left Broadway Impact, the Empire State Pride Agenda, and Marriage Equality New York with only one thing to do: Throw a massive equality party in Midtown!

And what better way to attract common folk than highlight your A-list roster? Broadway stud Cheyenne Jackson, newly engaged lesbian Cynthia Nixon (plus her Sex and the City co-star and alleged budding porn actress Kristen Davis, new-ish-ly open gay David Hyde Pierce, military persona non grata First Lt. Dan Choi, and mayor of the queers Michael Bloomberg were all there for handshaking opportunities. Even Gov. Paterson made a last-minute surprise appearance!

More interesting, however, was who wasn't in the audience. Of course openly bigoted Sen. Ruben Diaz couldn't be there (he was busy with his own take-back-marriage rally). And neither could Donald Trump nor Rudy Giuliani, who were preoccupied with promoting their own brand of inequality.

Don't get me wrong, I love gay marriage. But what bothers me is the husband-wife names, its too confusing, esp when I read about someone named Chris and their wife (or husband) and I have no idea if they are women or men. Not that it matters I know, lol. But just like gay marriage might change straight relationships for the better, like how both parties get engagement rings (not just women) do you also think titles/names of partners might change too? Or at least the perceptions of husband and wife titles?

Anonymous said...

Yes, I don't mind the husband/wife titles, as long as they don't come with the stereotypical gender role assumption - partner is more generic sounding, but more equal IMO. But kinda blah, wife or husband does have more warmth. :)

Cynthia Nixon engaged to girlfriend said...

"Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon announced her engagement to girlfriend Christine Marinoni at a gay rights rally over the weekend, celebrity web sites reported on Monday.

Nixon, 43, told the crowd at a "Love Peace and Marriage Equality" rally in New York that she and Marinoni got engaged last month and planned to marry, Access Hollywood said. Nixon and Marinoni, an education activist, have been together for about 5 years since the actress split with long-time companion Danny Mozes, with whom she had two children.

Sunday's rally was held to support a bill that would legalize same-sex unions in New York.

Nixon plays workaholic lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the "Sex and the City" movie and TV show. All four lead actresses have signed on for a movie sequel.
