A Gentle Man

Heath Andrew Ledger

A brief candle; both ends burning
An endless mile; a bus wheel turning
A friend to share the lonesome times
A handshake and a sip of wine
So say it loud and let it ring
We are all a part of everything
The future, present and the past
Fly on proud bird
You're free at last.

Ledger's Drake cover to be released

Call it a tribute within a tribute: A forthcoming album paying homage to the late singer Nick Drake will include a notorious cover song recorded by Heath Ledger just before his own death.

Ledger recorded a version of Drake's Black Eyed Dog in 2007 for a multimedia art installation – and he was reportedly working on a biopic of the cult British folk-rocker. But the actor died of an accidental drug overdose early in 2008 and the recording was never released.

“I was obsessed with his story and his music and I pursued it for a while and still have hopes to kind of tell his story one day,” Ledger said in 2007.

Ledger died during production of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a Canadian co-production that is slated for release this year. Drake, too, died of a drug overdose, in 1974, at the age of 26. He developed a cult following after his death and is best known for songs such as Pink Moon and Things Behind the Sun.

The untitled tribute album includes songs by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl.

In the spring of 2001, Heath Ledger sat at the bar in New York City's Regency Hotel, perched on the precipice of a kind of fame he wasn't sure he wanted. The 22-year-old Australian actor was about to appear in his first leading role in a Hollywood summer tentpole, a splashy rock & roll jousting movie called A Knight's Tale, and the newfound attention seemed to make him uncomfortable. As he spoke with a reporter for this magazine, he chain-smoked Camel Lights, fidgeted, and doodled with crayons on cocktail napkins, pressing so hard that the paper ripped. He said that the first time he'd seen his image on the movie's poster, wearing full medieval armor and a hard stare, he felt so nervous he shook. Out in Hollywood, many were busily mapping out his future for him: big-dollar paydays, hordes of screaming fans trailing his every move, spandex-clad-superhero roles.

In fact, he had already been offered the starring role in the newly launched Spider-Man franchise and turned it down. (''I just don't care for comics,'' he said matter-of-factly. ''It would have been stealing someone else's dream.'') In the face of all of Hollywood's promises and pressures, Ledger seemed to have his eyes on something more ethereal and indefinable. ''I'm on a f---ing journey,'' he said. ''I'm on a walkabout. A lot of people think ambition or success, and they think dollars.... My success is getting underneath that. At the f---ing end of the day, that's the only thing you're going to carry with you when you die.''

Roven: I showed Heath the first six minutes of The Dark Knight, the bank heist sequence, on an IMAX screen in London. I said, ''You have to see this. You haven't seen yourself be the Joker!'' He watched it, and it just blew his mind. He was so thrilled, he was just laughing. He said, ''I want to see it again!'' It's not an easy thing to rethread an IMAX, so it took about 15 minutes but we showed it to him again. That was the last time I saw him.

Interesting tidbits from summer/fall 2007. When Jake (at the Cannes FF) and Heath (at the Venice FF) were asked what their favourite film was this year, both guys said the same movie. I don't remember the title, but it's this British musical. Does anyone know?
Heath's friend Michael Stipe took pictures of Heath and Jake with those black glasses just days apart. And the black pullover Jake wore on the cover of Interview is most likely Heath's, he wore the pullover regularly at public appearances and candids ever since 2005. Everything may be a coincidence though.

I don't believe in coincidences, young man… I believe only in destiny.

THE family of Heath Ledger have told the media they will be making a statement about the late Perth actor tomorrow morning.

A press release issued late last night said the family would be making a statement to the media at 11.30am, at Cottesloe, tomorrow, a year to the day since the actor's death and the day after Oscar nominations will be announced.

Heath Ledger: Fallen Star

The tragedy struck in the midst of an already hectic day in the entertainment industry, as Hollywood reacted to the morning's announcement of the Oscar nominations and the latest buzz emanating from Sundance. But word spread with lightning speed via cell phones and BlackBerries, and in nearly every case was met with disbelief. One high-ranking studio exec, after receiving an e-mail stating that Ledger was dead, quickly wrote back: ''What — you mean his career?'' Charlize Theron learned the news while walking a red carpet at Sundance. Josh Hartnett was blindsided at a Sundance Q&A by a question about Ledger's death; he struggled to answer even as the crowd jeered the man who had asked it. The passing of an actor in his prime — he earned his first Oscar nomination at age 26 for Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain and was just months away from reinventing the Joker in the highly anticipated Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight — seemed too shocking to absorb at first, while at the same time painfully familiar. Within minutes of the story breaking, some 300 entertainment reporters, cameramen, photographers, and fans began to descend on Ledger's building, creating a tableau that resembled a grisly perversion of a movie premiere. Bystanders snapped photos on cellphones and paparazzi climbed the fire escape of the building across the street hoping for shots into Ledger's fourth-floor loft. ''It's crazy — he was so young,'' said one stunned observer.

Anonymous said...

I will say this about Brolin--when Heath's name was announced as a winner at the Critics Choice Awards, he was shown getting up enthusiastically, and putting his two fingers in his mouth to make that loud whistle that so many people make at sports games when their team is winning.

As a NJ-ite, even I make that whistle when I'm at a game to show my appreciation.

Also, Brolin is tight with Penn and Sean adored Heath who adored...you know who.

David's best friend Jack tries to convince him it's for the best, but the opposite occurs when bank robberies and millions of dollars become part of his day from hell.

Douche In A Bag (AKA Douchebag)

You know, I'm always on the fence on whether or not I'd let Shia LaDouche tip it or go nuts deep. If he wore that paper bag, I'd let him hit that shit until one of us passed out or barfed (it happens). And that plastic bag over his wrist cast just confirms to me that he isn't above using a Dollar Tree plastic baggie and rubber band if he doesn't have a condom handy.

Shia and a big-tittied friend walked the streets of Glendale, CA today in matching paper bag masks and plastic bag gloves to "disguise" themselves from the pappies. Oh, Shia. Why so smarty? But seriously, this made me like him a little bit. Just a little. For a quick second. And I hope that when he's done with that bag, he'll pass it over to the dolphin god known as Michael Phelps.

Gay Penguins Need Our Help

No, we don't mean Tom Cruise or Wentworth Miller in a tux. The Bremerhaven Zoo in Germany has discovered that three penguin couples have turned out to be all male. Yes, there are gay penguins. Thinking that perhaps they would grow out of this phase, or there wasn't enough female penguin ass to go 'round, zookeepers planned to introduce some new female penguins into the gayborhood to jump start some reproduction.

Not so fast, a local gay group said, and protested "the organized and forced harassment through female seductresses" that the zoo was planning. Yes, they protested gay penguins' right to stay with their own sex.

Yep.

And it worked! "Everyone can live here as they please," the zoo director stated and announced that the female ex-gay ministry penguins would be going elsewhere. Perhaps to Jake Gyllenhaal's house. Reese wants them there.

That question about Reese buying the shirt was probably posted by a babbler, the trolls have been out in force ever since people on OMG suggested that shirt belongs to Austin. They're just trying to come up with excuses for why Jake would wear something that doesn't fit him and is so colorful.

Besides, when I flipped through the Star at the checkout counter the other day I thought it was claiming that Reesebought shirts to replace old ones she ruined and she tried to hide the fact from Jake. Doesn't that imply she just bought some generic old boring white or blue shirt? Oh well, we know the babblers can't read and/or are not logical.

I guess I will have to be counted as a troll because I think that it's pathetic to attempt to use clothing as some means of proving that Jake and Austin are together. Hell, I could just as easily argue that the striped shirts and beanies are a shout out to Heath. I realize that we are all crazy fans otherwise we wouldn't be on these boards, but I really think some of those folks at OMG are delusional, constantly trying to make something out of nothing. They are just as bad as babblers.

Anonymous said...

Tabloid magazines must think that their readers are total morons. If I knew nothing about Reese I would never believe this story. I wouldn't ever think that some extremely rich movie star would ever even think of doing laundry or housework. I would imagine that any really rich person would have a housekeeper to keep to do house keeping and laundry. The woman has a nanny and takes her on vacation and they expect their readers to believer that she does laundry? Who are they kidding.

What kind of lame, idiotic, delusional self obsessed crap is this? Why can't Jake have a effin shirt with sleeves that are a little too long thats (his)? If it makes you feel all warm and comfy inside, then ok. Why on earth does it have to be Austin's? Jake has always been one who dresses to his beat so to say. Why do some get upset and think posters are babblers because they don't agree with this Austin is Jake's holy grail attitude. If Jake winks and throws up the high five signal, then it's a signal to Austin because you know what, Austin does that also. And Why is so much made out of a damn shirt.
Some here and over there need help. It's getting scarry.
Human logic and rational goes right out the window on these sites too often.

Re:10:27.

This comment illustrates the point. If I'm not mistaken the sleeves are rolled up. So, there is no way to really know how long they may be. You certainly cannot tell from a photograph. Have you ever heard of a little thing called perspective? Even if they are as long as you say they are, you have no evidence that the shirt belongs to Austin. They may have been given to Jake by someone else, or it might just be HIS. Again, trying to make something out of nothing.

And to say that the people at OMG are no more delusional than the babblers means that you also think that the people at OMG are also delusional. JUST LIKE THE BABBLERS. Which is exactly the point.

Anonymous said...

"Human logic and rational goes right out the window on these sites too often."

Would you also apply that same logic to those who say Jake had a crush on Heath? Because that sentiment is based on how Jake "looks" at Heath and the "great chemistry" they had in BBM. Doesn't matter that Jake "looks" like that at Peter, Austin, Chris and all the damn guys he looks at. And doesn't matter he has "great chemistry" with Jennifer Ainston too. The dumb fanfic continues, day after day after day.....

Anonymous said...

Given that we have no evidence regarding the true nature of Jake's sexuality, every comment made here can be classifed as fanfic. Based on your comment 11:16, I presume that you donot believe that Jake is gay, nor do you believe that Austin is, or ever was, Jake's boyfriend.

11:24, you need to learn to read. It's not a question of not wanting the shirt to be Austin's. We just don't need for it to be Austin's. We don't need to clutch at straws.

Regarding Heath. It never ceases to amaze me how many of the Jake/Austin fan fic lovers are so threatened by Heath. Do you know, or suspect, something regarding Heath and Jake that we don't know? Are you just that threatened by the idea that Jake could lust after someone besides Austin, especially someone who was everything that Austin wishes he could be?

^^It's pretty apparent that some J/A lovers ain't too fond of the idea Jake might have had more than platonic feelings for Heath.
Don't worry J/A fans, Heath ain't a threat anymore!

Heath's sister Kate is pretty. The other two half-sisters not so much.

"especially someone who was everything that Austin wishes he could be?"

Dude, you are something else!! How exactly did you come to that conclusion?
No, forget it. Ask an idiot a question and get an idiotic reply....

Anonymous said...

12.05 don't take the easy way out by saying "J/A lovers....blah, blah" Just tell me what exactly you base your J/H fanfic on, other than "looks" and BBM "Chemistry"
And just for the record I'm not a J/A lover. Last I heard J was playing the field, contract in hand!

Anonymous said...

You always know you've hit a nerve, when you get the name calling.

12:05, unfortunately, you are too right. It's kind of pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Many of us are simply open to the possibility that Jake may have had a crush on Heath. Why does the J/H fanfic upset you, if you are so sure it's not true?

"playing the field?" And what are you basing your fanfic on?

Anonymous said...

("Human logic and rational goes right out the window on these sites too often."

The dumb fanfic continues, day after day after day.....)

YES! I WOULD. I am one who think Jake is Ted's TT and (HAD) something with Austin. I also think Jake is bi because I believe his relationship with Kirsten was real and I do not know for sure that he and Reese are real or not real. NO. I have absolutely NO EVIDENCE on this.
I only believe that Jake is TT and bisexual which means he and Reese could be real, because I had strong feelings about his sexuality not being totally straight before I heard / knew of the rumors on blogs, gossip sites, etc.

{WoW! so many on this site don't want the shirt to be Austin's. They'll come up with analysis after analysis as to why the shirt can't be Austin's. Maybe it isn't Austin's. Maybe it is Austin's. Whatever. But if the shirt had been Heath's, oh my, this place would have been ablaze with Heath/Jake fanfic. As always. LOL!}

You're wrong there. Maybe you have some need for the shirt to be Austin's. Have you thought of this? I don't think people are upset and trying to cause problems, it's just that some Jake / Austin fans are crazy as hell and can't see that the same bs ideology that they say others use to say Jake is NOT bearding, gay, etc. they use to say he is. And they go to the extreme with it at times. For instance, almost 2 years ago the insanity of Jake hiding Austin under the cover in his car when the cover was mostly flat and very obvious nothing and no one was there. But some wanted Austin to be there and had a fit because the non believers were the enemy. All logic and Rationale went out the door the window and rolled down the hill. Totally insane and ridiculous.

anon 2:30 and 2:41, I don't believe everything ted writes. If you want to, you can. I believe there is some truth in some of his gossip. 50/50 at best. Ted's words are not the gospell for me. It has to be proven.

Example: I do not believe in babytile at all.
If you want to you can.

Anonymous said...

Blimey.. can't really believe that you can all get so upset about a shirt, one way or the other.

If is is Austin's, well that sort of cute, if it isn't, then that's fine too (and it looks nice on him which is more than can be said about the blue plaid lumberjack look).

I agree that the Reese doing laundary is a rather far fetched story. 1: if you had $$$$s in the bank would you wash your own, let alone anyone elses underwear, and 2: even if you did, how dumb can anyone be to mess up washing a few men's shirts, unless of course we're talking about Jake's private Versace silk collection (dry clean only those beauties). If she can mess up a few cotton shirts, no wonder she's always shopping because she's obviously too stupid to be able to operate basic household equipment.

Perez Hilton was on Craig Ferguson. In the interview he said when you see stars in OK, Star or whatever rag, it is because they wanted to be there. It does not happen by accident.

Yeah !!
When you see Michelle "breakdown" cause heath's death covering all the rags, it'is not by accident! lol

Anonymous said...

5:19.. yeah so what, its only harmless speculation. and also, of course certain stories make the rags without those involved promoting them (such as someone's grief after a tragic death), these are stories which are actual news and would get reported whatever, , endless coffee runs, farmers markets excursions and piglet buying trips, those always stink of promotion.

Anonymous said...

I agree 6:11 AM, but Perez talked about the principle and he's right - tabloids use celebrities and celebrities use tabloids.

Star fiction about Reese doing laundry and replacing two ruined shirts is painfully dumb, but it serves PR purpose:

* keep mentioning Reeke
* hint how Reeke live together
* Reese isn't some spoiled star - she's down to earth and just like us (women who read rags)!

PR mission accomplished.

Kevin Spacey to Take On Toothy Tile?

We remember the days when Oscar-nom morning would come and Kevin Spacey would more than likely be a part of it. Now? We caught up with the former two-time Oscar winner slinking around Sundance, promoting his new indie flick, Shrink, instead of celebrating a nom with friends, fam and fellas.

Hey, Kev, there coulda been a nice role for ya somewhere in Milk, we’re sure, if only you went after that terribly chic and sorta male-dominated subject material. But, like, we really did ask this question. For real: What do you think about all these gay-friendly flicks finally getting noticed? Answer might surprise more than a few:

“I think it’s great!” Spacey said, perky and perfectly adept at perhaps uncomfortable queries. “I think people should be courageous and brave enough to do subject matter that they find politically incorrect, dangerous or important to do.”

So you’d be down doing a Milk-like pic? “Oh yeah! Send me the dangerous stuff!”

There ya go, H'wood, ya heard it straight from Spacey’s mouth—can someone send him the script to Toothy Tile: The Movie? ('Cause we so know the real Toothy would pass on it.)

So sweet. Spacey supports (gay) colleagues who publicly support gay rights.

During an Oscar Roundtable, Brad Pitt was asked if he Googles himself and said: "Dear God. No. Never. First of all, I don't really know how to operate a computer."

But! Robert Downey Jr says: "Oh, I love all that shit, personally. Sorry. I love it. Because it's a hoot. Some people overstate their support, like they know you. Other people are busy doing something else and just want to go on this chat site and say some despicable character assassination, which I honestly think they kind of nailed it. I do have that shortcoming. It's really fun." [Perez]

Nasty nasty person with a HUGE chip on his shoulder. He thinks Hollywood "owes" him and was EXTREMELY vocal when he lost at the GGs. How about not believing that Jake and Austin are still together because there is no reason to believe this?

How about believing that Jake could very easily be bi, not gay?

How about believing that Jake could be with Reese, but also seeing other men (plural) on the side?

By "creative," I presume you are referring to the delusional J/A true love, together forever, no matter what evidence to the contrarytypes. If so, you are right, you guys are funny as hell.

I, myself, am open to the possibility that J and A are still together (and if they are, then Austin is an enabler in the bearding which makes him a pathetic, spineless wimp). But it appears more likely that they are not.

And you have to be desparate and crazy to believe there is a Baby Tile(s).

Well, isn't a little skepticism good for both sides? I mean Ted's BIs could be real. They could be fake. Either way, they're doing their job--keeping readers invested in the Awful Truth.

Some of the stuff he writes about Toothy seems off the wall. I put Baby Tile in that category.

Jake could be gay. He could straight. He could be bi. He could be a circus clown. Who knows? I have yet to see concrete evidence confirming him as either/or.

The term "babblers" gets thrown around often, mostly in reference to the JIS believers. But, I think it's broader that. I mean, to me, if you're obsessed with confiming him as one way or the other, you're a babbler because we just don't know for sure.

Still, the speculation is fun. Anyway you slice it, boyfriend has a secret. But don't we all? Lol! That's what keeps me interested in him.

Both camps demonstrate the same obsessive need to grasp at any straws and will spin ridiculous theories to prove their points.

I happen to be one who thinks that Jake may have been involved with Austin among others. I also think Jake did have a crush on Heath. In fact, I think the crush was hardcore and obvious.

But I could be totally off base.

I think Jake's bi. I also think he had a thing with AN, it's probably over by now. Probably had a man crush on HL, but I don't think there was more than friendship. Is currently dating RW. Bold prediction, I'll admit I'm a bit of a shipper: He'll get closer to MW through little ML and they'll hook up eventually.
