Gyllenspoon-Fed Merde

October 22, 2008

Dear Ted:
What's this you said in the last Truth, Lies & Ted about my favorite actor of all time, Paul Newman? You were talking about what a shame it would be if sham couple Jake and Reese tried to make like a "modern-day Paul and Joanne." I'll still love him anyway, but tell me one of H'wood's greatest love stories ain't a sham! Love you and your bitchin' bitchiness.
—Lauren, Chicago

Dear Newman's Own Fan:
No fakery we know of betwixt Paul and his longtime sweetie. Meant it would be heresy if J&R played house like those two, 'cause they ain't nothing like the real thing.

Dear Ted:
Are Reese and Jake the new TomKat? I think robot-boyfriend Jake is the new Katie.
—Gray

Dear GyllenKat:
I think they're both robots.

Morning Piss: Gyllenspoon-Fed Merde

J'adore Reese and Jake. Those sweethearts are two of the most talented, adorable and luscious babes to hit T-town in some time.

Don't agree?

Think Reese is just a pixie-ish little waif with pale sex appeal? Think again. And if you consider Jake all boyish 'n' bashful brooding, no real outward he-man stuff goin' down, think again on that score, as well. R 'n' J are both terrifically not of what you see in real life.

And this whole aw-shucks romance they've got going down is so not how both types really are — why in the world the public is lapping it up, hook, line and photo-op, is beyond me.

Just look at their pics together, everybody! They act like bro 'n' sis (and not even particularly close ones, at that). These babes have movies and careers and agendas to sell, oldest story in the world. Jen and Vince, anyone?

Ms. W is the craftiest broad alive; she's teaching J.G. spectacularly well. Just ask Ryan Phillippe if you don't believe this to be a high probability. But on the other hand, if this sorta white-bread, milquetoast romance is what you need to get your fantasy on every morning, then, dears, go right ahead, be my limp guest.

I just prefer my Awful readers to be fully informed consumers, that's all.

Reeke is painfully boring.

That's something that was also there in the interview on Graham Norton last night. If you'd never read anything about her you wouldn't know that she was just talking about the usual things: her farm, her kids, the usual. Any star when over-exposed will become a little boring of course but it's more than that.
She was perky and smiley but it couldn't disguise the fact she's not witty or entertaining in her own right.
Then again I'm not sure how interesting Jake is really.

^Her co-guest Paul O' Grady is a naturally funny person and she didn't seem to know how to respond to him.

Milk Inspires Roger Ebert to Come Out as Straight

Ebert, like nearly every other reviewer in the nation (I said nearly), is raving about Milk and Sean Penn's performance, noting Milk's 70's campaign to bring gays out of the closet. Ebert notes that Milk's campaign for sexual openness has had much success, and suggests in not such explicit terms that he's behind efforts to make the Mormon church (and others against equality) pay for its anti-gay initiatives:

"In 1977, Harvey Milk became the first openly gay man elected to public office in the United States. Yes, but I have become so weary of the phrase 'openly gay.' I am openly heterosexual, but this is the first time I have ever said so. Why can't we all be what we prefer? Why can't gays simply be gays, and 'unopenly gays' be whatever they want to seem? In 1977, it was not so. Milk made a powerful appeal to closeted gays to come out to their families, friends and co-workers, so the straight world might stop demonizing an abstract idea. But so powerful was the movement he helped inspire that I believe his appeal has now pretty much been heeded, save in certain backward regions of the land that a wise gay or lesbian should soon deprive of their blessings."

I object to Ebert's use of "prefer" but his sentiment is in the right direction.

Penn said, in an interview late last week, "I think less people would have died of AIDS [if Harvey Milk had not been assassinated]. I think Ronald Reagan would have been forced to address it. [Milk] was a leader, and he happened to be focused on the gay movement. He would have advanced that argument a lot sooner. I think people are dead because he died too soon."

Penn also condemned Prop 8: "If we could have no excuse for being ignorant in human history, then the punishment for support of Proposition 8 would be minimally manslaughter. There will be teenage boys who will hang themselves [because of this]."

Earlier this month I saw Milk (which I should also disclose, and you may have noticed, advertises on this site). As I noted back then, it's a powerful, classy, elegant, film. If there's anything I would add to that review is that if you see the film (it opens today) this weekend (whether it's at a Cinemark theatre or not), you should take a straight friend, preferably one who's not fully convinced that gays deserve rights under our Constitution.

Because Penn's Harvey Milk will likely, to use the leader's phrase, recruit them.

Yesterday it was announced that Penn would be the one to present Gus van Sant with a special tribute award at the Gotham Awards at Cipriani in New York City.

A.O. Scott of the New York Times said in his review of Milk: "...[it's] the best live-action mainstream American movie that I have seen this year. This is not faint praise, by the way, even though 2008 has been a middling year for Hollywood. 'Milk' is accessible and instructive, an astute chronicle of big-city politics and the portrait of a warrior whose passion was equaled by his generosity and good humor. Mr. Penn, an actor of unmatched emotional intensity and physical discipline, outdoes himself here, playing a character different from any he has portrayed before."

"Then again I'm not sure how interesting Jake is really."

It depends. Interviews on Jonathan Ross and the Gooberballs bit (peanut-balls? was this a self indictment?) were embarassingly awkward, I thought. Also Zodiac commentary. But he can come through, if managed well. He's intuitive, visceral - but not thoughtful and articulate -

How he hooked up for PR purposes and mutual support with a hard little piece like RW casts a diff'rent light on him - revealing what? I dunno - do you?

Anonymous said...

. . . was this a self indictment?)

I felt that way when he made the Gooberballs comment on Letterman - I didn't find it funny at all, it actually made my ears perk up, and I found his way of admitting he might not have had the strength to do something, and wasn't proud of it. Not only the words, but the way he said it. But, that's JMO. Everybody thought is was funny, and he laughed outwardly, but was anything but happy inside.

Anonymous said...

^^or could be anything but happy inside. I should say I found it funny/ironic, not funny/ha-ha. ;)

How he hooked up for PR purposes and mutual support with a hard little piece like RW casts a diff'rent light on him - revealing what? I dunno - do you?

I don't see any mutual support, just PR.
There's no light on Jake, he lives in a shadow, revealing nothing.

Anonymous said...

I wasn't so sure who needed whom more - but in light of all of the PR blitz, it's apparent to me that he's her life preserver, and not only professionally. I'm sure he lends a strong shoulder for her, but I don't know if it's romantic, more of a good friend? I don't see hot romance when I look at them, and by all descriptions she's not got a lot of warmth anyway. :(

Anonymous said...

There's very little mention of him, it's all her lately. He's happy to be relegated to the shadows lately, I am wondering.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure he lends a strong shoulder for her...

LOL, you must be joking.

There's very little mention of him, it's all her lately.

Nothing changed, it was all about Reese from the start - Nov 2006.

How on Earth did you conclude that from the latest Reese's PR crap fest?

Anonymous said...

Becaaaausssse . . .

Her career may be floundering? 4xmases is getting abyssmal reviews. And as others have said, a young, hot bf could make her look like she's overcome a painful divorce and is "back on top".

That was obvious 2 years ago (see WFT comments).

Plus, the whole thing, from the beginning, just "reekes" of trying too hard, including all of the recent promotions. Who are they trying to convince?

Average public. And it works because average public doesn't care about Reeke or Reese, it's just another celebrity tidbit.

Come on people, everyone here should know ^this by now. We are a very small part of the average public and I mean very small. We can and do scrutinize and pick apart the things the mainstream media don't see or could care less about, Public Relations for Reese and Jake or any other celebrity knows this.

More and more people are getting their gossip from the internet; Reeke, I mean US Weekly's newsstand sales plunged 10 percent in the first half of this year. Does anyone really thing the under 40 gossip crowd gets most of its fix from the rags? And all anyone has to do is glance at the comments to see what people really think of them.

If Pr really thinks that is where it is at anymore than Reeke's pr are dinosaurs when it comes to the media. Of course they're not total dinosaurs since they clearly monitor this site and OMG, but I'm not sure if all the fine-tuning they do as a result is due to some misguided belief we'll change our minds, or if they're just lazy and like to steal ideas from us.

Anonymous said...

^^ I guess my point was Jake is not that big of a celebrity yet. No matter how much we here like/love him, he is still mostly unknown to the vast public! Now Reese is better know but, she does not generate the mass appeal as of the top female celebrity's. Most people look right past the mags with R/J on them and most people will see Reese or Jake movie if the subject matter is interesting to them or what they like. I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone of them can open a movie with just their name at top billing. For Reese, maybe 7 or 8 years ago. JMO

http://www.pr-inside.com/reese-witherspoon-s-trampoline-talent-r940469.htm

Reese Witherspoon is an "incredible trampolinist". The 'Four Christmases' star has revealed the secret talent which she has spent hours developing since she was a child. She said: "I'm an incredible trampolinist. I had one in my back garden when I was a kid and I used to be on it for like three hours a day."

The actress is also a master in the kitchen after her boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal bought her lessons last year. She added: "I am a pretty good cook, I can cook anything. I am actually really good at making Sunday dinners."

Reese - who has two children with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe - has also revealed her love for English food. She added: "The food in London is so good. Americans have this fallacy that the food in the UK is bad. "They should all go there and see for themselves how wrong that is." 'Four Christmases' is released in the US and UK today (28.11.08).

What a jerk! every kid knows how to bounce on an effing trampoline. and any thirty plus year old woman who does not know how to make a decent Sunday dinner is a complete fool.

She seems to have the mentality of a twelve year old - maybe eleven -

James Franco calls for Oscar glory for Ledger's Joker

Actor James Franco has paid tribute to the realism of the late Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker. Writing as part of Variety's 'Contenders' issue, in which actors single out their fellow professionals for praise ahead of the awards season, Franco said the Australian's role in The Dark Knight had real emotional depth.

Unusually for a blockbuster film - with The Dark Knight second in all-time box office takings, behind Titanic - the Batman Begins sequel has been widely tipped for Oscar recognition in 2009. Director Christopher Nolan is thought a likely nominee while the power of Ledger's turn as The Joker saw critics and audience touting him for a posthumous acting Oscar.

Having starred in a comic book film himself - as Harry Osborn in the Spider-Man films - Franco admitted that Ledger's work in The Dark Knight was "great".

"With any superhero movie villain, everybody is still contending with the huge shadow that Jack Nicholson cast with the first Batman," he went on. "His was such an indelible performance. Heath had to be very conscious of it when he and Christopher Nolan went into their movie. "And they did such an incredible job of getting away from the Nicholson character while being faithful to the idea of the Joker."

Franco added: "Heath wasn't the funniest of Jokers, but certainly the more grounded of villains. At least on an emotional level, you could follow why he was doing this stuff; there was real emotional depth."

The Dark Knight may be re-released in January in a bid for Oscar glory, Warner Bros revealed in September.

Some of the pics of Reese from the 4xmas premiere that surfaced a few days later (on ONTD) were not flattering at all. After a certain age, losing weight makes you look shrill and haggard, not good. She does look off in that London pic.

Obama Hasn't Decided "Don't Ask-Don't Tell" Time Frame Yet

President-Elect Barack Obama may not be delaying his reversal of "Don't Ask-Don't Tell" after all.

After last week's news that the incoming administration would delay til 2010 to remove the policy responsible for thousands of gay and lesbian soldiers to be discharged from service, an anonymous source within the Obama camp tells the Washington Blade that no decision has been made either way, saying, “These decisions will not be made before the full national security team is in place.”

In other words, it's not that Obama has decided to put off "Don't Ask-Don't Tell", it's that he's put off deciding.

The Jonas Brothers ‘Burn Up’ Black Friday

The Jonas Brothers each proudly hold up a copy of their new book, “Burning Up: On Tour With The Jonas Brothers”, in New York City on Friday afternoon.

The brothers - Nick, Joe and Kevin - made an appearance on Good Morning America earlier this morning to promote their book that they describe as a scrapbook for their fans.

The musical trio were in the hot seat and asked a zillion questions by their fans. When asked what actors they would like to play them in a movie version of their life, Joe claimed Jake Gyllenhaal, while Nick quickly snatched up: “Josh Groban.”

Will Celebs Be Flocking to Obama's Inauguration?

Do we know yet which of Hollywood's lovable lefties will be going to the inauguration in January? I imagine celebs will be falling all over themselves to see Obama.
—Lillianne, Texas

Indeed! In fact this B!tch has learned that several celebrities will be cutting short their snow-frolicking at the Sundance Film Festival to watch the swearing in, while others will simply descend from their thrones on Olympus for a few hours of patriotic revelry. Exactly which 30 Rock actress is expected to be in the VIP section when Barack Obama swears on the Bible on Jan. 20, 2009? Well...

Not Tina Fey, sorry. At least, she isn't confirmed yet. But Jane Krakowski sure is, along with Anne Hathaway, Maggie Gyllenhaal, her man Peter Sarsgaard, Spike Lee, Kerry Washington, Josh Lucas and a whole bunch of others. The stars are being rounded up by the Creative Coalition, an organization created to bring Hollywood together with political and social causes. And just in case you were wondering, these particular stars aren't just bandwagon fans who clamored for tickets once Obama won.

"Anne, Josh, Susan [Sarandon] and Spike were all with us at the Democratic National Convention as well," a publicity rep for the Creative Coalition told me. "Maggie and Peter are a recent addition to the group who joined us at our pre-Hofstra debates event on Long Island. "They will be coming as a group, many straight from the Creative Coalition's involvement at Sundance. That's commitment!"

And some seriously enviable access. The stars are expected to attend some combination of the inauguration—traditionally held at the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.—and more than a dozen anticipated balls, including parties thrown by the Creative Coalition itself, Obama's people and Joe Biden's.

^I guess I want to say, even if a newcomer starred in it, it could be a success or failure. It'll depend on how enjoyable the movie is. If it is enjoyable, it'll be a success, no matter if Jake Gyllenhaal or Mr. Nobody is the male lead in it. IMO.

It matters who's playing James Bond, but it didn't enlarge Daniel Craig's fanbase.

Yeah, but because he's quite unattractive and uncharismatic, IMO. Not that good of an actor either.

Well, if it is a fauxmance, I think he and Reese use each other equally. She, to appear desirable after her ex dumped her and Jake to appear straight to further his career. After all, he's a big boy and agreed to do it, no one forced him.

I dont care about who's using who, and of course it's his choice. However, it's a choice that I, personally, find dishonest, as it seems to be a PR stunt and a lie. In my book, this is contemptuous of your audience.

Reese's movie made a shitload of cash, even though it got crap reviews. I sure won't waste my money, just for her to further enojoy her private jets and priviledged lifestyle. She earns 15-20 per film. Why do Hollywood stars earn so much money? I mean even 1 million per film would be more than enough.
Surgeons who save lifes can only dream earning so much. Oh well.

Anonymous said...

She earns 15-20 per film.

Of course she doesn't. For example, Rendition and Penelope are nowhere near that.

Oh no, I used to think noone could play Bond like Sean Connery, but I've since been shown that Daniel Craig can do it. He, in my opinion, is now the best Bond ever. I find him extemely attractive, and more than that, he's got lots of sex appeal, and very charismatic. I love him as Bond, and can't wait for the next one. I also loved Eva Green as Vesper Lynd, and I wish they'd find a way to bring her back to be with him. I really liked the storyline of Quantum of Solace. :)

PETERS HIT WITH MALE SEX SUIT

JON Peters has been hit with a shocking new barrage of sex charges - this time by a male staffer who claims the powerful Hollywood producer of "Superman Returns" and "Ali" sexually roughed him up and threatened to break his legs.

In a lawsuit filed this week in Los Angeles Superior Court, Brian Quintana - a co-producer with Peters on the upcoming "Superman: Man of Steel" - alleges that Peters subjected him to "continuous and pervasive sexual harassment." The suit states there were "multiple instances where he was physically, sexually harassed by Peters, including being groped by male individuals at Peters' behest." Peters would "wrestle and rough up [Quintana] in a sexual manner . . . fondle himself in front of [Quintana] . . . often place his hand on [Quintana's] leg in a sexual manner," as well as "touch" his buttocks, the suit alleges.

In addition, according to the suit, Peters demanded that Quintana "drive male individuals onto the set for the purposes of granting sexual favors for members of the cast and crew [and] cover up allegations that . . . Peters engaged in sexually inappropriate acts in front of children."

Quintana, in the court papers, also charges that Peters threatened to "break his legs" and fired him after he refused to "perjure himself" by signing documents stating that Peters had completed community service for a DUI conviction.

Peters, a one-time boyfriend of Barbra Streisand, is already being sued by two female former staffers who claim that he sexually harassed them. One, Blanca Hernandez, claims that Peters touched her breasts and buttocks, tried to push her onto his bed when he was naked, tried to kiss her breasts and offered her money for sex.

Reese Witherspoon out shopping in London, November 29

Please, don't shoot me, but I like her in these pictures, just walking casually, smiling quietly to herself. The boots are great. Sometimes I think she cannot be that bad. She is just this petite woman. She sure has her weak moments, she cries, feels tired or she can't handle the kids.I sometimes wonder what she is like as a friend, if she goes shopping with her friends, if she gets drunk talking about men at "girls only" parties, if she stares blankly at herself in the mirror in the mornings, without make-up, without all this glamour,if she helps kids with homework,if she is sometimes plastered to the floor trying to reach the missing piece of a puzzle or a Barbie's head under the furniture,if she has painful periods, if she wakes up in the night when kids go "mum, I'm scared",if she burns dinners and what she does if there's a run in her tights in the middle of the street.

It's just I have these moments very, very, very RARELY. Anyway, I think today we should have "let's be nice to Reese day". Just this once. It's not good for our karma to harbour all these negative feelings towards her. Tomorrow we are going to start hating RW again:)

If a "be nice to Reese day" is declared, wake me up when its over.

I have had no indication whatever that she is a warm and intelligent woman. She is driven by some Hallmark idea of what life is about. She's not attractive, in her looks nor demeanor. She identifies with her children because she is a child, herself. I have often felt sorry for her, but do not respect her.

Poor little rich bitch.

Sorry 4:52 PM, I don't give a fuck about Reese Witherspoon.

Aren't we here all kind of "obsessing" over Jake AND Reese?
At the end of the day, R & J enjoy their priviledged life and we are wasting our time with stories (that we read about them and that are probably mostly false anyway) or fantasies about them.
I admit I'm jealous, I wish I was a Hollywood star. I know not everything is perfect then either, but I'd handle it. Ha! ;)

why do you want to tell people on this blog what to do? it's annoying. I doubt anyone appreciates it.

Anonymous said...

Well, I agree, 4:52 -

I have nothing against Reese, and when all's said and done, I don't know one single thing about who she or Jake really are, so I try not to be too nasty. The picture being painted of her in the media isn't that great, I must say, but probably most of it is false anyway. There's no way for me to know. I do think she's pretty, and a good actress. I'm not into money, don't care about it as long as I can live the way I want to, what other people have doesn't impress me. It's more the kind of person they are and what they do when good fortune smiles upon them that matters to me.

I am dismayed about the fauxmance, if it is one. If someone isn't ready to come out, that's their business but a charade isn't the best idea for anyone involved IMO. If it's real, we'll know soon enough. That goes for J&A and BabyT as well, and I'd be thrilled if that is true. :)

Please don't delete this or shoot me. But IF, I say IF Jake and Reese are really dating then I think she's a lucky woman. I don't think he's the type to cheat, she neither and it might last. He is still so young and he could have dated almost anyone he wanted after his successful year in 2005, but he chose a woman with two little kids. That speaks for him.
But there's no way to know what's really going on between them. My post above was just a big, fat IF.

Anonymous said...

Me too, he could be involved with some slutty starlet, but he's chosen a woman with two kids, and I believe he's the faithful kind, and he's certainly beautiful. He's even alluded to that - that he thought that the HW dating scene is "incestuous". By that comment, I believe intimacy and monogamy is important to him. So Reese is very lucky, I think. The only problem I have is if it isn't real. But if it is, good for them. :)

LOL, more Reese crap. In that link Reese, who is papped shopping on what seems like a daily basis, talks about not spoiling her kids for Christmas because she wants to get away from the "gluttony of things". Or maybe it's do as I say, not as I do.

Even if someone is pro-J&A. And noone needs to preface their comment with a "please don't shoot me . . ." just because they say something less than hateful about her. It's one thing to hate bearding, or you don't like Reese as an actress, it's another to bash every single thing about a person because you don't like that they are dating Jake. Or the childish namecalling. How old are you, ten? There are all kinds of people who post here, as someone said above, a couple of pathological haters, and everything in between.

What a hypocrite she is. In a pic of her a few weeks ago, she was out shopping (surprise) and the gossip site pointed out what a great bag she had-the bag cost $1500. She doesn't want her kids to be spoiled but she shops everyday and I've never seen her wear the same bag twice (I'm a bag lover) but each bag that she wears cost a minium of $400 and she's worn some that were in excess of $1800 and that's not even getting around to shoes, clothes or jewlery. She tries to sound like a down to earth mom, but falls flat. She must follow the old adage-Do as I say, not as I do.

Anonymous said...

"Anyway, I think today we should have "let's be nice to Reese day"."

Are you kidding me? Witherspoon is one of the most manipulative, controlling individuals in Hollywood. Its just a matter of time (ie. tomorrow) before we get another set of staged, mendacious, manipulative fauxmance pix engineered by Reese's pap buddies for mass consumption. Feel sorry for her? I bet what you don't know is that those bags are loaners from the designers. Olbermann and Candace Gingrich Talk Proposition 8

MSNBC's Keith Olbermann talked to Candace Gingrich, the lesbian sister of conservative stalwart Newt Gingrich, Tuesday night on Countdown With Keith Olbermann.

In the opening segment, Olbermann discussed a recently released poll from Survey USA indicating that 8% of California voters who had voted to ban same-sex marriage had changed their mind on the measure following nationwide protests that ensued. The poll had a +/- 4.3% margin of error for that specific question. The margin by which the gay marriage ban passed was just over 4 points.

"Thus with the caveats that they didn't ask anybody who voted against the ban if they had changed their minds, and it's just a poll, and there's no second vote scheduled, there is still some evidence that another vote might go the other way," Olbermann said.

Asked if the poll surprised her, Candace Gingrich said, "To me, it just exemplifies the progress that's being made on what marriage equality is all about." Gingrich added that the protests had facilitated a continued dialogue and discussion around gay and lesbian issues and family concerns that was "very powerful."

Gingrich attributed any change of heart among California voters to a new recognition that certain people's rights had been taken away. She also noted that the implications of Proposition 8 have had a "chilling" effect on many Californians, and especially minority groups. "This idea that you can put the rights of one particular group up to popular vote, I mean, that's scary," she said.

’Milk’ Draws Raves, Prop. 8 Parallels

Although Milk, the new biopic about openly gay San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk from director Gus Van Sant, was not intended as a commentary about Proposition 8--the voter-approved amendment to the California constitution that sets a precedent by repealing an existing right, that of marriage equality, for gay and lesbian families--the timing of the movie’s release, and the success of the anti-gay amendment, makes comparisons and parallels inevitable.

A major part of the plot of Milk is the story of how Harvey Milk helped spearhead the successful campaign, in 1978, to defeat a ballot initiative that would have made the firing of gay teachers--and, for that matter, straight teachers sympathetic to gays--mandatory under state law. That initiative, known as Proposition 6 (or, more popularly, The Briggs Initiative, after the politician who sponsored the measure), was supported by pro-Proposition 6 advocates with the same arguments used this year by pro-Proposition 8 supporters: namely, that the safety of children in schools was at stake.

The campaign in favor of the Briggs Initiative encountered the same arguments against the measure as well: the intrusion of the state into citizens’ private lives, the erosion of church and state given that religious denominations played such a central part in the promotion of the referendum, the enshrining of discrimination into law.

What the campaign against the Briggs Initiative also featured--something that the No on 8 campaign, which unsuccessfully attempted to convince voters to uphold marriage equality this past Election Day, lacked--were the faces of the people who would be impacted by the law. In a crucial scene, Milk (played by Sean Penn) condemns a flyer that argues against the Briggs Initiative without mentioning the word "gay." Acting on his own, Milk issues an impassioned plea for gay Californians in the closet to emerge to the world, and to make themselves known: "They’ll vote for us two to one if they know one of us," he explains.

The movie’s production was started in advance of Proposition 8 finding its way to the ballot, and Focus Features, the studio that produced the film, decided to marketing reasons not to put the film into release prior to the election, for fear of the movie being tied too closely to Proposition 8.

But that association was inevitable, to some degree, and the outrage and hundreds of demonstrations against the measure’s passage--protests that, with extraordinarily rare exceptions, have been peaceful--have only heightened the sense that the movie and the historical anti-gay measure it talks about, and the modern-day success of a ballot initiative that strips rights from selected families, are closely, deeply linked, in more than an ideological way.

The movie is by no means without flaws, but it speaks as powerfully and as passionately as another film that has been referenced in comparison to Milk--another movie from Focus Features, 2005’s Ang Lee-directed Brokeback Mountain, a love story about two Wyoming ranch hands who meet in the 1960s and maintain a secret, intermittent, but profoundly meaningful attachment for two decades.

Brokeback Mountain generated considerable Oscar buzz, and won the statuette in several categories, although it lost for best film. Similarly, Milk--released only days ago--has could be forgiven if it seems to emanate an aura of expectation in terms of Hollywood’s highest honor. Indeed, critics praise Van Sant’s direction, Penn’s performance, and composer Danny Elfman’s score.

Still, it’s Proposition 8 more than Brokeback Mountain or the Oscars that critics touch upon, couching topical references in their glowing reviews. Critic Kennth Turan, writing in the Los Angeles Times, noted in the opening paragraph of his review, "It was partly an accident of history that made Harvey Milk the first openly gay man elected to major public office in this country, so it’s fitting that yet another accident of history has made ’Milk,’ the earnest biopic about the man, more involving than it would otherwise be."

Adds Turan, "It’s impossible to see ’Milk’s’ anti-Prop. 6 demonstrations, to read signs saying things like ’Gay rights now’ and ’Save our human rights,’ without thinking of the very current battle over Proposition 8 and its ban of gay marriage. "This graphic demonstration that the struggles are far from over gives ’Milk’ a harder edge than its otherwise self-congratulatory tone could manage."

In his review for The Christian Science Monitor, Peter Rainer skirts any mention to Proposition 8, save for one indirect reference, writing, "Essentially the film is saying that, at a time when civil rights for gays are still under attack, there is no one of Milk’s charisma on the scene to lead the charge." Similarly, Ann Hornaday’s review in The Washington Post largely skirts Proposition 8, though it cannot escape the contemporary political climate entirely. Hornaday’s review begins, "Once in a while, a movie arrives at such a perfect moment, its message and meaning so finely tuned to the current zeitgeist, that it seems less a cinematic event than a cosmic convergence, willed into being by a once-in-a-lifetime alignment of the stars." Later on, Hornaday notes, "...history isn’t a straight line but an often heartbreaking two-steps-back gavotte. The point, as Harvey Milk taught so many so well, is to stay in the dance."

J. Hoberman was less circumspect in his review for The Village Voice, writing, "Milk is so immediate that it’s impossible to separate the movie’s moment from this one. "The 1978 victory over Prop. 6 merges with the current struggle against California’s Proposition 8, overturning the State Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage." Continues Hoberman’s review, "A charismatic leader has yet to emerge, but there is... Milk, and its wholehearted devotion to the principle of equal protection under the law."

Notes Hobeman, pranthetically, "Sound bites from the filmed demonstrations are near-identical to those culled from those held two weekends ago" against Proposition 8. The Time Out New York review, penned by Melissa Anderson, notes, "Momentous political events earlier this month have amplified Milk’s significance." Continues Anderson, "I saw the film two days after the election, leading to an even more heightened response after Penn says, ’You gotta give ’em hope.’

"California’s homophobic Proposition 8 also won on Election Night; in one of Milk’s pivotal scenes, Proposition 6, which would have banned gays from teaching in California public schools, is solidly defeated." Queries Anderson, "Would an October release date of Milk have helped to ensure Prop 8’s defeat? "Probably not; the notion itself is magical thinking. But Milk could achieve something far more wide-reaching. As the film powerfully shows, Harvey Milk believed that one of the most radical acts a gay person could commit was to come out.

"But the action didn’t stop there; it was merely a first step toward demanding what everyone should have: justice, equality, fairness."

Writing for Slate, Dana Stevens addresses both a perceived weakness of style and a powerful, if accidental, connection through timing, writing, "In the movie’s heartbreaking last scene, shots of the actors merge with real-life footage of a candlelight vigil on Castro Street the night of Milk’s death. "Ending a biopic with archival footage was a concession to convention on Van Sant’s part, but in the wake of California’s passing of Prop 8 (and the 30th anniversary of Milk’s death), this convergence of past and present feels more appropriate, and sadder, than ever."

Other modern-day parallels also surface in the movie. Wrote The Boston Globe’s Wesley Morris, "Milk was a natural leader. The movie makes it hard not to see in him a little of Barack Obama or vice versa." Adds Morris, "The similarities are chilling at times. They both ran as agents for change, a message that drew people to them, especially the young, and managed to win the support of folks in spite of their own bigotry.

"What you’re able to see is how far the country has come in four decades and how far it hasn’t," Morris continues. "The day of Obama’s victory, voters also supported gay marriage bans in three states. Go figure."

A: "'Chicago' probably (Travolta was offered the role of Billy Flynn). I wasn't all that into the stage show. It was a lot of women who hated men and I like women who like men. (laughs) The stage show was kind of vicious but the movie had a heart. 'Green Mile' I probably should have said yes to and 'An Officer and a Gentleman'. Why a mature woman would like to post divorces's dirty landry on a site where the audience is still in their teens? Doens't make sense.

Check out Cantara's posts on her own blog. Cantara isn't exactly a sane person.

Rescuing Stephen G
I know that I promised Part Two of my long essay Bildung in Hollywood, tentatively entitled “The Gyllenhaal Code”, would be in Cantaraville’s winter issue next month—now I’m not so certain. There’s just too much material finally coming out into the open... On va voir. I’ll try to write as fast and as well as I can.

But how’s that for timing, this news coming down on Thanksgiving Week during the worst personal credit crisis since the Depression? But the almost supernaturally fateful timing is what makes it such a typical Gyllenhaal story.

And oh yes. How dare Naomi use Stephen’s beautiful book—a book I’m so proud to have published—against him in the divorce proceedings. How dare she.

More to the point: How dare she use a private email against him, thus allowing yet another bewildering Gyllenhaal pronouncement to meme its way through the international media?

another bewildering Gyllenhaal pronouncement

She loves the publicity, then.

Is the e-mail she talks about hers? No.

That was a typical Cantera post The style is recognizable Why would she do that? Cause she's a sick-o, that's why.

I wonder if she thinks that Stephen will be forever grateful to her. But maybe he is...

Stephen is Cantara's only and the best chance to get publicity.

Grateful for what?

For rescuing him.

I can't make up my mind who is crazier - Cantara or Stephen.

Let's recapitulate.

The Brokeback cast:

Jake Gyllenhaal: Parents divorce and keep spilling the dirty details. Private life overshadowing professional life, feeling the need to do commercial stuff such as PoP for $ and more fame.
Heath Ledger: killed himself.
Michelle Williams: Dad in prison, her baby-daddy dead.
Anne Hathaway: Ex boyfriend a fraud and in jail.

Yep!

Oh.My.God.

Is it a curse or what?;)

Is it a curse or what?;)

Who knows?

He chose to do a very commercial movie that could bring him a lot of money and fame. It's his decision. If some fans continue to follow him or not is not his problem.

The problem is that not just SOME fans have chosen not to follow him any more. Most of them have left the fandom.

No more festival awards for you, Jake, no Golden Palms, Bears, Lions or any other animals. No more reviews with 5 stars. No more crowds at festivals. No more Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto. No more European movie-goers lining up for your films(me included). No more press-conferences with journalists who are interested in your craft, not who you're screwing. No more thought-provoking discussions. No more Oscar-winning directors calling you.

No more of any of this if you follow your girlfriend's path and forget that movie-making is considered to be a part of art and it's not only about making loads at the box-office.

Reese is going to be sorry too for choosing the career of "the highest paid actress" in Hollywood and doing mostly comedies no one remembers after two months.

After all, it's about being true to yourself. If you're not, you'll crack up eventually.

I read Brothers will be nominated for the Golden Palm in Cannes next year.

Anonymous said...

Brothers release date for France is March 4, 2009. I think it means no Cannes film festival for Brothers.

Anonymous said...

Why? I don't understand.

Anonymous said...

I think movies in the competition must have French premiere at the Cannes festival, but I'm not sure about it.

Anonymous said...

Zodiac premiered in the USA way before it premiered in Cannes.

Hugh Jackman lists the three biggest rumors about him: "Gay, gay and gay..."

MTV News caught up with Jackman just hours after he was anointed the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine and took the opportunity to grill him about that weighty responsibility and whether he's been bothered by rumors about his sexuality. Here's an excerpt and video:

MTV: How do you plan on enjoying your reign as the Sexiest Man Alive?
Hugh Jackman: I'm not resting, mate. I'm not a one-term winner here. I want two terms, three, four, something like that. Brad [Pitt]'s had two [but] never back to back. That's my goal.

MTV: You were pretty forthright with People magazine when they asked you about the three biggest rumors about you.
Jackman: Gay, gay and gay.

MTV: You said in that article that the rumors while you were playing Peter Allen in "The Boy From Oz" [on Broadway] bothered your wife. Did they ever bother you?
Jackman: Come on. No, it's ridiculous. I just think the whole idea of judging someone based on their sexuality is ridiculous. In Australia, we're much easier on all those fronts. I was playing a gay guy. I actually took it as a compliment. I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I remember when I was about 19, me and my mate used to go to these dance parties which were 80 percent gay guys, 18 percent girls who were sick of heterosexual guys hitting on them, and then vultures like me and my mate. We would go there until 2 in the morning, when the girls were really drunk and wishing they weren't with 80 percent gay guys.

MTV: So you're basically the worst kind of straight guy?
Jackman: The worst! The leech! The vulture!

Of course, a lot of straight guys went to gay bars during the '80s. LOL

Reese Witherspoon has denied claims that she is about to move to London

The Four Christmases star was said to be in the capital with boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal last month to buy a house. However, she dismissed the speculation, saying. "It's always being reported that I am moving somewhere. I came to London in the summer, and someone said I was looking for house. It seems I am moving every six months!"

The actress added that she does not let tabloid stories about her life affect her because they are rarely accurate.

"I try not to read any of what people write about me because so much of it is not true," she said.

Always I: I am moving somewhere, I came to London, I was looking for house, I am moving every six months.

But wasnt the house purchase recorded, wasnt the house later up for rental?

Anonymous said...

Oh Crikey, she was gonna buy a house in San Fran, in London, and recently I read something about a place in NYC. If she doesn't like to be gossiped about, why is she in US Reekely weekly? Enough already! ;(

Well, in all fairness the boy has barely cracked 30. He's got time to return to his good role playin' roots. Prince of Persia doesn't have to keep him in sell out lane.

John Travolta went away for a spell...made those popcorn Baby Talk movies. Now look at him.

Leo DiCaprio rebounded from lightweight flops like The Beach. Now, look at him. He's practically Scorsese's muse. Movie after movie is a dime piece...

Yes, but even though Leo DiCaprio and George Clooney have had gay/bearding rumors surrounding them, look at how differently from Jake they handle them. Leo and George do they own thing, aren't afraid to be photographed or even on on vacation with a bunch of male friends and always have some kind of tie to beautiful women. Jake on the other hand, takes up with a ditched woman a few weeks after she files for divorce who has 2 kids and is bitchy, uptight and phony. Jake distances himself from everybody he's every been photographed with and for over 1yr is only photographed with her or her kids. People still think Jake is gay and the relationship is fake while Leo and George only have occasional comments on their sexuality. Jake should have listend to Leo and George instead of Reese and their mutual PR teams.

I have the same impression, he wants to distance himself from the gay rumors, I think partly he kept silent about Heath is that he was scared about such kind of rumors.

I agree that if he is bearding, he should have picked a model or someone less high profile.

I'm one who doesn't have a clue what's going on with Reese, but hell we only see pics of him with her and her kids nowadays. It's annoying.

A release date for Brothers should be showing up soon. It's almost 2009 already. Jake will have to do some promo for that so we'll have a chance for some one on one with him. I'm starting to think Disney does not trust him on his own. Too apt to let truth slip out.
