Gyllenspoon-Fed Merde

October 22, 2008

Dear Ted:
What's this you said in the last Truth, Lies & Ted about my favorite actor of all time, Paul Newman? You were talking about what a shame it would be if sham couple Jake and Reese tried to make like a "modern-day Paul and Joanne." I'll still love him anyway, but tell me one of H'wood's greatest love stories ain't a sham! Love you and your bitchin' bitchiness.
—Lauren, Chicago

Dear Newman's Own Fan:
No fakery we know of betwixt Paul and his longtime sweetie. Meant it would be heresy if J&R played house like those two, 'cause they ain't nothing like the real thing.

Dear Ted:
Are Reese and Jake the new TomKat? I think robot-boyfriend Jake is the new Katie.
—Gray

Dear GyllenKat:
I think they're both robots.

Morning Piss: Gyllenspoon-Fed Merde

J'adore Reese and Jake. Those sweethearts are two of the most talented, adorable and luscious babes to hit T-town in some time.

Don't agree?

Think Reese is just a pixie-ish little waif with pale sex appeal? Think again. And if you consider Jake all boyish 'n' bashful brooding, no real outward he-man stuff goin' down, think again on that score, as well. R 'n' J are both terrifically not of what you see in real life.

And this whole aw-shucks romance they've got going down is so not how both types really are — why in the world the public is lapping it up, hook, line and photo-op, is beyond me.

Just look at their pics together, everybody! They act like bro 'n' sis (and not even particularly close ones, at that). These babes have movies and careers and agendas to sell, oldest story in the world. Jen and Vince, anyone?

Ms. W is the craftiest broad alive; she's teaching J.G. spectacularly well. Just ask Ryan Phillippe if you don't believe this to be a high probability. But on the other hand, if this sorta white-bread, milquetoast romance is what you need to get your fantasy on every morning, then, dears, go right ahead, be my limp guest.

I just prefer my Awful readers to be fully informed consumers, that's all.

There are about two pathological haters of Reese here, who can´t see the light, but I guess a lot of you may just see that she at least has no intention to make it look like they are an item.

LOL
Are you saying that Reese didn't spend last 12 months trying to convince the world she's dating Jake?!?

I don't hate Reese, but she's most definitely a hypocrite. She complains about paps, but obviously goes out of her way to have her pics taken by them.

A hypocrite and a shameless lying bitch.

MARC Jacobs (above) and his paramour, Lorenzo Martone, have no qualms about PDA. They were celebrating the re-opening of the Mango store in SoHo with a dinner at Shang at the Thompson Lower East Side Hotel, where an onlooker spotted them "making out all through Solange Knowles' performance. They only stopped kissing to throw flowers at the stage." Monica Cruz, who along with sister Penelope Cruz is a face of Mango, sang along with Knowles, "even though she doesn't speak English."

No Milk For You

After much anticipation, Milk, the Sean Penn biopic about celebrated San Francisco politican Harvey Milk, arrives in theatres next Wednesday (and goes into wide release Dec. 5).

Well, not all theatres. You won't be able to find the film playing at any of Cinemark's 2,700 venue. Perhaps that's because the company's CEO, Alan Stock, happened to write a cheque for $9,999 to the Yes on 8 campaign, as we noted earlier.

Use sites like Fandango or Yahoo! Movies to locate theatres other than Cinemark in your area in case you're looking for some Daniel Craig or Twilight goodness.

(Unless you'll do something like not see Twilight because the book's author, Stephanie Meyer, is Mormon, and will supposedly donate 10 percent of all the cash she earns from it to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)

Spend your gay dollars appropriately.

Oh please she was prepared, and the answer she gave made it seem like she was being coy but all it did was confirm was he gets along with her kids and can we change the subject. She also slips and mentions Jake's name in regards to the movie and says that they are happy...

Read the whole interview: private Reese and the press was told no personal questions, but she "slipped".

So she will be in the UK next week, no surprise.

Zac and Leo Not in Love

Back over at the GQ Men of the Year to-do at Chateau, forgot to tell you all that Zac Efron was totally digging the fact that everybody was digging him so much. Dude loves the new intense fame thang, big-time. But damn if he didn’t chuckle, rather contemptuously, when somebody asked if he was looking forward to getting his party on with professional club boy Leonardo DiCaprio (who was also at the bash, as well as every hot hang you can find these days). Is that because Leo’s in danger of becoming the male Paris, only with a tad more ability in the acting department? Your guess is as good as ours.

Super-funny bitch Kathy Griffin also hit up the shindig. You know she just couldn’t resist being in a room full of eligible dressed-up men. “I’m a Hillary fan,” 'fessed Kath when asked who her vote was for Gal of the Year. “I think she’s coming back strong. And she could also be Man of the Year. That’s what’s great about her—she’s flexible.”

Don’t be so sure, Kath. It’s not lookin’ so hot in the Hillary political arena right now. And trust us, it kills us to remind you.

Leonardo DiCaprio & Zac Efron: Let’s Go Lakers!

Zac Efron and Leonardo DiCaprio sit next to each other as they watch the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Denver Nuggets, 104-90, at Staples Center on Friday in Los Angeles.

The 21-year-old teen heartthrob and 34-year-old former teen heartthrob sat next to each other and shared many laughs together throughout the night. Look. They’re even folding their hands the same way! Seems like Leo passed on the teen hearthrob crown to Zac tonight!

Maybe Leo worships Zac after all.

Last month, Zac talked about transitioning from poster boy to Oscar contender. He said, “I would love to just sit down and talk with Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp and pick their brains about their early careers. They do it because they love it, not because they enjoy being famous.” Looks like Zac got his wish!

Also sitting next to Leo was Entourage star Kevin Connolly.

A Marriage Manifesto... Of Sorts

I no longer recognize marriage. It’s a new thing I’m trying.

Turns out it’s fun.

Yesterday I called a woman’s spouse her boyfriend.

She says, correcting me, “He’s my husband,”
“Oh,” I say, “I no longer recognize marriage.”

The impact is obvious. I tried it on a man who has been in a relationship for years,

“How’s your longtime companion, Jill?”
“She’s my wife!”
“Yeah, well, my beliefs don’t recognize marriage.”

Fun. And instant, eyebrow-raising recognition. Suddenly the majority gets to feel what the minority feels. In a moment they feel what it’s like to have their relationship downgraded, and to have a much taken-for-granted right called into question because of another’s beliefs.

Just replace the words husband, wife, spouse, or fiancé with boyfriend, girlfriend, special friend, or longtime companion. There is a reason we needed stronger words for more serious relationships. We know it; now they can see it.

A marriage is a lot of things. Culturally, it’s a declaration to the community that two people are now a unit, and that unity should be respected. Legally, it’s a set of rights and responsibilities. And spiritually, it’s whatever your beliefs think it is.

That’s what’s so great about America. As a Constitutionally secular nation, or at least in reality a vaguely pluralistic nation, we can all have our own spiritual take on what marriage is. What’s troublesome is when one group’s spiritual beliefs deny the cultural and legal rights of another.

But, back to the point. They say their beliefs don’t recognize my marriage, I say my beliefs don’t recognize theirs. Simple. It may seem petty, and obviously the legal part of the cultural/legal/spiritual trilogy is flip-floppy, but it may be the cultural part that really matters.

People get married to be recognized as a permanent couple. To be acknowledged by friends, family, and strangers as being off the market, in a relationship, totally hooked up, yikes… it’s impossible to say without saying ‘married.’ We wear rings to declare this!

So, we can take this away. We can refuse to recognize marriage in the cultural sense. It is totally within our rights, as Americans, to follow our beliefs and recognize or not recognize what we like.

I guess this is a call out to all Americans with beliefs similar to mine.

If you believe that all people should have equal rights, and if you believe that marriage is one of the greatest destinations of a relationship, then perhaps you believe that nobody should have marriage until everybody does.

That’s what I believe.

Lately I've been keeping an eye on James Franco, what with the rumors about him, Milk, all the similarities between the questions he gets asked and that Jake got asked during BBM. He's really playing up that ambiguity card. The gay roles, all the strange stories, appearing at one of the early marches against Prop . 8.

Last night I watched him on Letterman, and of course he kept being asked about the kissing, and when asked about if it was strange kissing a man he turned it around to say it was strange kissing Sean Pean--which is of course quite different. I wish I could remember the phrasing, but he was asked I think if he'd do it again, or if he minded kissing men, and he kind of shrugged and looked sheepish--followed by kissing Letterman on the cheek.

I'm probably going to be proven wrong, but I bet we don't see him with a beard anymore and he'll go the glass ceiling route, or maybe even come out.

"We're very different. We're partners on this movie. We decided to produce it together, we rewrote it. Every day was like, 'How are we going to do this? What are we going to do now?' We had a script and worked on it very hard. We worked on it for four months before we ever went on set every day for five, six hours a day. We broke it down, threw scenes away. So by the time we were shooting, we knew what we were doing . . ."

Anonymous said...

Doesn't matter that there's no long weekend in London. Sure that Reese has going to dinner photo ops scheduled on the nights Jake works and double photo ops for the weekend when she's off. Guarenteed that Reeke PR will spin this trip as the Reese needed extra loving time with Jake because her kids are spending Thanksgiving day with Ryan. Will her die hard fangirls ask the question why did she go on this trip if her kids are home and it is a holiday weekend?

Anonymous said...

Strange reasoning, r6.27. I am a Reese fan because I don´t downplay Jakes part in the charade? He is as much part of this as Reese and if you have seen the latest video (Jackie has the photo with this post) it is quite obvious that he is enjoying his little game as much as Reese. In fact even more as Reese at the moment, I would guess.

Ben Kingsley lauds Jake Gyllenhaal

Sir Ben Kingsley has revealed what it is that makes Jake Gyllenhaal "so good" as the Prince of Persia in upcoming film, The Sands of Time. Sir Ben said that Gyllenhall, who plays lead character Prince Dastan, brings a natural confidence that is perfect for the role.

The Donnie Darko star's character will face his nemesis Nizam, a nefarious and scheming monarch, played by Sir Ben. The Sands of time is based on the hugely successful video-game series and also stars new Bond girl Gemma Arterton.

Sir Ben has been enjoying something of a renaissance with eight films out this year and has received critical acclaim for his performances in Elegy and Transsiberian.

But fans of the game and the actor, who won an Oscar for Best Actor for his eponymous role in Gandhi, will have to wait until 2010 to catch a glimpse of action.

^^I agree. I love his voice. I don't think it's overly soft, but it does have a gentle quality at times which is very desirable, I think. I dont think Jake's voice is especially interesting - he sounds like a girl - and his CA accent and valley girl expressions I find rather embarrassing. He's a good actor, and he is, as Ben K mentions, confident - which has been one of his gifts and attractions - but his voice? (shrug)

I long to see early Jake reprised, but he has been, as some say, tarnished - compromised? - and I dont expect to be made crazy by him again. I am inclined to see even early Jake as extremely ambitious, manipulative, and a smart ass. He's good - as Dustin said - but not good enuf.

Old news and new poster (at least for me)

S. Darko - Donnie Darko sequel?

Yes, it’s true, there is a Donnie Darko sequel in the making, though Richard Kelly, the writer/director of the original, has nothing to do with it, nor will profit from it, this according to reports published by Reuters and the Hollywood Reporter. It’s called S. Darko and focuses on Donnie’s younger sister, Samantha, (played by Daveigh Chase, the only returning original cast member), and takes place seven years after the original movie. Samantha and her best friend Corey, according to the IMDB summary, “are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.”

Since Donnie Darko was one of the most self-contained movies I’ve ever seen, S. Darko has to be one of the least necessary sequels imaginable, but since it’s already gone into production back in mid-May, it’s on its way, for better or worse. Though there’s already a Facebook group advocating a boycott of the movie, this only serves to give the movie some free, albeit negative publicity, and any publicity is good publicity, especially for projects like S. Darko. I’m not wild about the prospect of a sequel, but I’m not ready for a boycott, either, as there’s nothing really to boycott until the movie’s finished and being released. Will I want to see it then? Probably not, but the poster’s kinda neat:

S. Darko

We had a script and worked on it very hard. We worked on it for four months before we ever went on set every day for five, six hours a day. We broke it down, threw scenes away.

Four Christmases - Hollywood Reporter review:

"Bottom Line: A top-drawer cast in a bottom-drawer screenplay

Bad enough to create one of the most joyless Christmas movies ever, but then to go for an unearned feel-good ending adds insult to injury.

Thus a cast that collectively has earned 18 Oscar nominations with five wins is assembled for a script that probably would have been better served by unknowns. At least the slapstick fights, pratfalls and regurgitation might have come off as a spoof of a Sundance dysfunctional family film. The approach by all supporting actors save for Voight is an exaggeration belonging more to the world of cartoons.

The script by the writing teams of Matt R. Allen & Caleb Wilson and Jon Lucas & Scott Moore essentially situates Hollywood cliches about Southern rednecks incongruously within the tony Bay Area."

Activists Seek to Tie ‘Milk’ to a Campaign for Gay Rights

LOS ANGELES — When the movie “Milk” comes next month to Claremont, a college town about 30 miles from here, Patrick Milliner intends to greet it with a candlelight vigil protesting the newly passed state prohibition of gay marriage. Before this month’s election, Mr. Milliner organized unsuccessful opposition to California’s same-sex marriage ban, Proposition 8. Now he expects the movie, about Harvey Milk, the murdered gay-rights crusader and San Francisco supervisor, to ignite his “Shame on 8” campaign.

“It fits perfectly with the plan,” Mr. Milliner said. That may be good for the movement. Whether it is also good for the movie is less clear.

The convergence of “Milk,” which portrays gay-rights battles of 30 years ago, and a looming new culture war over homosexual marriage and other issues, has raised unusual expectations around Focus Features’ plan to release the film. It will be shown in a widening group of theaters, beginning with some in New York, Los Angeles and about a dozen other cities on Wednesday.

Proposition 8-related vigils have already occurred outside prerelease screenings in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Amy Balliett, a founder of jointheimpact.com, a clearing house for gay rights information, said on Friday that her site would urge its network of supporters to see the film on Dec. 5 at one of a list of “gay-friendly” theaters.

“Our goal is to make this movie one of the top three-grossing movies of the weekend,” Ms. Balliett said in an e-mail message.

Yet the unforeseen alignment between “Milk” and the gay-marriage ban — there was no Proposition 8 on any ballot when the director Gus Van Sant began shooting the film in January — also creates a conundrum for those Focus executives. How do they honor their movie hero’s feisty brand of confrontational politics without being consumed by them? To join the fight could turn off some of the viewers Focus needs to make “Milk” a broad-based hit. But to sidestep it might disappoint a core audience that has begun to see the film as a rallying point.

Mr. Milk, played in the movie by Sean Penn, was not one to pull punches. “If this thing passes, fight the hell back!” Mr. Penn says at a pivotal point in the film, as his allies ponder the likely passage of Proposition 6, a 1978 ballot initiative aimed at curbing gay rights in California. (It failed.) But Focus has been stepping carefully of late. In a particularly ticklish exercise, the studio continues to plan showings of “Milk” in theaters owned by the Cinemark chain, whose chief executive, Alan Stock, donated to the campaign for Proposition 8.

Taking a cue from Milk — who made his political breakthrough by supporting a union boycott of Coors beer — opponents of the marriage ban have begun their own boycott through a Web site, NoMilkforCinemark.com.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Cinemark, one of the country’s largest theater chains, said its decision to proceed with plans to show the movie also reflected a principle: “It would be inappropriate to influence our employees’ position on personal issues outside the work environment, especially on political, social or religious activities.”

On Thursday James Schamus, the chief executive of Focus, struck a diplomatic note. “I know there’s a lot of anger out there,” said Mr. Schamus, who noted that Cinemark three years ago was among the first chains to embrace the studio’s gay-themed “Brokeback Mountain.” “I hope that gets settled,” he said of the boycott call.

With similar delicacy, Dustin Lance Black, the film’s writer, and Cleve Jones — a Milk associate who is portrayed by Emile Hirsch in the movie, and served as its historical consultant — published a manifesto in The San Francisco Chronicle last week calling on President-elect Barack Obama, who has opposed same-sex marriage, to support comprehensive federal legislation guaranteeing gay rights, including the right to marry. But the pair did not identify the manifesto with “Milk,” despite the film’s strong call for exactly such equality.

“I don’t know that it would be appropriate,” Mr. Jones said of any effort to align the movie with the campaign against marriage bans in California and other states. The danger, he said, was that conscious campaigning might seem to exploit, rather than support, Mr. Milk and his legacy. Even so, Mr. Jones, over the last few weeks, has conducted politically robust discussions keyed to Focus-sponsored college screenings of “Milk” in a number of cities, including Boston and Washington.

Speaking separately, Mr. Black said he viewed the movie itself as a contribution to the movement it portrays. And the manifesto, with its call for broad federal action, he added, was directly inspired by Mr. Milk’s critical stance toward gay contemporaries who demanded too little. “They weren’t asking for what they wanted,” said Mr. Black, who spoke from Salt Lake City, where he was planning to screen the film on Friday. “They were asking for crumbs.”

In the same spirit, Daniel Nicoletta — another Milk associate, who is portrayed in the film by Lucas Grabeel of “High School Musical”— said last week that he believed the opposition to Proposition 8 would inevitably fade, but that he hoped for a boost from the movie’s release. “We need that excitement,” he said, speaking of actions like the one planned by Mr. Milliner.

In Mr. Schamus’s view, the filmmakers and others are free to politick as they please. But, he said, to identify “Milk” directly with a position — even one popular enough among Oscar voters to enhance the film’s prospects in a heated awards race — is to misunderstand how the cinema really effects change.

“The way movies work is not by pushing toward or appealing to a specific electoral position, but by changing the climate of opinion,” Mr. Schamus said. And to push too hard, he cautioned, risks losing sight of what he sees as the main point of “Milk”: “There is actually a great, old-fashioned American narrative movie here.”

Because he will find no other work.

I like that, that a film can contribute to that, changing the climate of opinion, like Brokeback and now Milk. I think that is part of filmmaking for some, not all films, having a sense of how the film can affect an audience. James Schamus seems like a great guy. :)

Well, there are Brothers and Nailed, and two new projects in the pipeline.

Nailed is not finished. Jessica Biel said that in a recent public appearance. With all the financial problems that dogged that shoot, it's likely it will NEVER be finished or if so, just go straight to DVD. I don't think it's coming out ever.

So this way, once he has killed off all of his fans, all that will remain will be Reese fangirls-frumpy housewives who don't see any other type of film-and he and Reese can be in a movie together so we can see their wonderful love for each other and the dynamic chemistry that they have together. No, Reese learned her lesson - she's after actors who are more popular than herself.

What kind of drugs was Reese on when she decided that her and Vince Vaughn would be great in a movie together? She's got a telephone pole stuck up her ass and he's laidback and actually has a personality. Just loving all the bad reviews and someone posted earlier how Reese credits herself for this movie's script. Waiting for some movie reviewer to pick up on that and then roast her over the coals. Serves her right since she seems to have a ginormous ego.

Variety FC review:

Four Christmases is "oddly misanthropic, occasionally amusing but thoroughly cheerless holiday attraction that is in no way a family film, but will no doubt be mistaken for such by many unsuspecting patrons".

"Vaughn is his usual motor-mouthed, preoccupied self, although less antic and vulgar and more polite and considerate than his norm. Breaking type here is Witherspoon, who abandons her perky, upbeat image for the brittle, somewhat chilly piece of work that is Kate. With all the scripts doubtless at her doorstep in the wake of her "Walk the Line" triumph, it's a wonder she chose this one, which in no way relies upon her special talents and does her no particular favors."

God saved my ass on Quixote film, Gilliam tells tribute audience

Maverick director reveals his plans to resurrect project abandoned after a freak storm in 1999, and his hopes for his new movie, which features Heath Ledger's last celluloid appearance

He is the man who took on the Hollywood system and won, but could not defeat the elements; the Python whose animations inspired a generation of British cartoonists, and the film-maker who refuses to let the death of his leading man ruin what he hopes will be his most successful movie to date. Terry Gilliam, director, animator, actor and Oscar nominee, was last night lavished with a tribute in London by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Two of Gilliam's old Monty Python cohorts, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, were on hand to trip down memory lane. Gilliam himself took to the stage to reveal plans for his long-delayed film version of the story of Don Quixote - the feature he was forced to abandon in 1999 after a freak storm destroyed his set.

For good measure, he also discussed his new movie, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which was similarly thrown into chaos following the untimely death of Heath Ledger. Gilliam told the audience that the picture will be credited simply to "Heath Ledger and friends" in tribute to the late Australian actor, who died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January. Johnny Depp, Colin Firth and Jude Law stepped in to take over from Ledger, slashing their usual fees in order to help Gilliam finish the movie.

"With Heath's death this became a very different film," Gilliam admitted. "In a strange way, events wrote it for us. Fortunately in the movie there is a magic mirror, and when someone goes through it things can change. So we decided that one of the things that can change is the actor playing the main character.

"I was terrified that it wouldn't work but we've had a couple of screenings and it seems to work fine. I'm really pleased with the film - I think it's a good one and I think there will be an audience for it as well," he added.

Gilliam also said that he would be restarting work on The Man Who Killed Don Quixote next year. He explained that he had finally secured the film's rights from the French insurance company which paid out $15m (£9.9m) when the production was scuppered by a flash flood and the withdrawal of lead actor Jean Rochefort. He said he and his co-writer Tony Grisoni had extensively rewritten the original script.

The director, who was born in the US but gained British citizenship in 1968, then took time out to nail his reputation as a loose cannon, a film-maker reputed to run wildly over budget.

"The strange thing is that the reputation is for profligacy but it's not true," he insisted. "We've only gone over budget on one film. I think it has something to do with Brazil, because we took on the studio and won." This was taken as a reference to his infamous 1985 battle with Universal's Sidney Sheinberg over Brazil, which led to the film-maker putting an ad in trade bible Variety calling on the executive to release his movie.

"Hollywood is overseen by executives who are untalented people, and we have a small amount of talent and they are terrified of us," Gilliam added. "They are there to say 'no', because they know that as soon as they say 'yes' the whole thing is out of their hands. It's not that they're bad people. They just have bad jobs."

But he admitted that at times God had stepped in to "save his ass", specifically on Don Quixote.

"I was in some way relieved that it did fall apart," he said. "Because I didn't have the money to finish it. It's a good thing it went down when it did because I would have got the blame for going over budget. I think this time we will make a better film."

Elsewhere, Michael Palin paid tribute to a colleague he described as "a man who begins where others stop and only stops when others have fallen asleep". He added: "Terry is someone who tries to do things in ways they have never been done before. This can be demanding - but usually for no one as much as himself."

That's 3 negative reviews so far. One of the unfortunate things that happens to powerful people is that they become surrounded by yes men. No one is willing to tell them the truth, so they lose touch. That's where Reese is. She probably thinks every one loves she and Jake together, and buys the "he is straight campaign" is working story. PR is not going to tell her and risk getting fired. Neither were the 4xmas screenwriters, cast or director. I think she had a lot to do with Rendition's failure too. Her peformance was weak and that shrill voice in the trailer drove away anyone remotely interested in it.

Anonymous said...

And it's not just Reese, she shares a manager with Jake, so times what you said by two 8:18.

Anonymous said...

Jake was miscast in Rendition, it tanked along wih bad reviews because nobody wants to see a film about torture and the war.

Both Vince and Reese are co-producers of this film, and they have been around long enough to know that the film would pobably get crap reviews but they know that films like this that opens around this time of year will make $$$ no matter what.

It will make $$$ the first weekend, coming in 2nd behind Twilight next week which is good enough for this film, Warner expects it to make about 25 mil.

That's all HW cares about $$$ not reviews.

Anonymous said...

I don't know about the movie making so much money, there are alot of movies opening at the same time. But, even if it makes some money the first weekend, it won't make much more after that. But, bad reviews do add up with the powers that be. Redition-bad reviews, box office bomb. Penople-bad reviews, she produced, box office bomb. Four Christmases-bad reviews, she produced, box office....we shall see.

Anonymous said...

Don't forget Vince produced this too and he had a bomb earlier in the year with that comedy documentary and don't forget his Christmas bomb movie from last year, Fred Clause and yet Warner greenlighted it because it will make back it's cost the first weekend.

HW doesn't care about quality or ereviews all they care about is $$$

I'm sure Reese isn't gunning to be one of those actors relegated to doing mediocre movies that break even at the box office and then make a few bucks on dvd. I wish I could remember who it was I was reading an interview with, but he said that after you have a big hit movie you basically have 5 years to make good. Both Jake and Reese are knocking up against that 5 year time frame, and the given that it's not looking good for either one of them, I think a lot of blame has got to be on their manager Evelyn, who has now seemingly tied their fates together.

Anonymous said...

Reese has a huge ego and believes all of her own self important PR. Everything that Reeke's manager does, is done with Reese's OK. I think that the combination of Reeke's blindness to everything but themselves and a lousy manager who obviously would rather make alot of money instead of telling her clients they digging a deeper ditch is the problem. Reeke is becoming like Lindsey Lohan=known more for pap pics and what's written in the rag mags that for their movies anymore.

"Four Christmases (12A)
VERDICT: Shocking thriller *

BROADLY speaking, Osama bin Laden is a bad man.

But if he ever did drum up a global jihad and put infidels to death by fire and the sword there would be one silver lining. We’d never have to watch another Vince Vaughn Christmas film ever again.

Four Christmases. It’s not quite as bad as Fred Claus. But it’s so pant-soilingly awful, it doesn’t even deserve the usual turkey gag.

Two of President-Elect Barack Obama's advisors say that the new administration will not make overturning the military's policy of "Don't Ask-Don't Tell" an immediate priority and may wait untl 2010 to act. Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network has spoken with Obama about the issue and came away with the impression that Obama believes "2009 is about foundation building and reaching consensus." Another Obama advisor, Larence Korb told the Washington Times:

"The new administration should set up a Pentagon committee to make recommendations to Congress on a host of manpower issues, including the gay ban. If it's part of a larger package, it has a better chance of getting passed," he said.

Four Christmases is a piece of sh*t. The trailer makes that clear. Reese is popular because people associate her with the adorable Elle Woods. The cuteness is gone. Reese now has to get by on her acting or her true comedic ability. Guess that means her career is not going to go much further. lol!

It looks like Reese is the one desparate for a hit, and I think she thought doing a film with Vaughn would be a sure thing. Of course it's too early to tell since we all know people often flock to movies despite horrendous reviews, but it's not looking good for the Chin's career.

Rachel Maddow on Gay Hate Mail and Coming Out of the Closet

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow appeared Conan O'Brien's show friday night and discussed becoming a journalist, Ted Stevens' 56-second long standing ovation good-bye in the Senate (8 seconds for every felony), playing 'Iran' as a child, Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, and being an openly gay TV anchor.

Said Maddow: "I get a lot of mail - some of it hate mail, some of it nice mail - about the fact that I am openly gay. I get straight men writing me emails or sending me letters saying, 'if I like you, does that make me a lesbian?'...So I always just say 'yes.'

She jokes, "It's well-known among gay people if you have any interest in a gay person whatsover, even if you're not sure they're gay, that if you're a man that makes you a woman - check your pants - and you're definitely gay. It's nice. It's meant to be a compliment, but... they're trying to compliment me and also tell me that they're not gay. It's awkward, and then you also get the hate mail where people write in specifically to tell me that i'm gay. As if I didn't know. Oh my God I had no idea. I'll get off television. That is the single best thing about coming out of the closet, is that nobody can insult you by telling you what you just told them."

Blu-ray Review: The Dark Knight (2-Disc Special Edition)

The movie remains fantastic, but the special features don't really live up to expectation

No matter what film wins the Oscar for Best Picture in February 2009, The Dark Knight will always be the movie of 2008. So, when the Blu-ray shows up in my mailbox on the last day of a long week you bet it was a treat. Offered in a 2-disc set, including a third disc with a digital copy of the film, you get a small assortment of special features as well as a pristine look at the best superhero film I have ever seen.
...
In all honesty I was sadly disappointed in the special features overall. As impressive as the disc one’s “Gotham Uncovered” feature is, the second disc only offers two highly produced features taking a look at the gadgets of the film and the “psychology” of the film. Too bad both 45 minute features feel as if they are made-for-TV promotional features with cheesy voice over and all. Neither feature add any in-depth look at the actual making of The Dark Knight, at least not in any satisfying way. There’s nothing involving a behind-the-scenes look at Ledger’s work as The Joker, which is what I really wanted to see. I wanted to see alternate takes of scenes. Perhaps some costume tests, rehearsals, anything highlighting the magnificent performance Ledger turned in on this film and what he did to prepare for it. To be completely denied is truly a disappointment even though circumstance surely limit what is available.

The second disc also offers a trailer gallery as well as a look at some concept art, production stills, Joker cards, poster art and six faux Gotham Cable News reports featuring Anthony Michael Hall as news anchor Mike Engel. All boring if you ask me, the poster section doesn’t even include anything we haven’t seen, which was one of the cool features on the Batman Begins release. The other feature is Warner Home Video’s recently launched BD-Live section, which offers a little bit in terms of extras, but it is slow going.

The Warner Bros. Dark Knight BD Live section currently offers two sections for Media Content in the form of “Extras” and “Trailers”. The “Extras” section is currently offering the Batman animated features “Mad Love” and “The Shadow of Ra’s al Ghul” in episodic installments while in the “Trailers” section you get just that, a bunch of trailers for recently released and upcoming Warner Bros. films coming to theaters and DVD ranging from Gran Torino to Blade Runner: The Final Cut and even a trailer for Tomb Raider Underworld PC videogame. Loading a trailer or extra feature does take a little time (sometimes a LONG time) as it streams it straight from the network to your Blu-ray player. The lack of a fullscreen function really does make it pretty much worthless considering I have a 42″ plasma and the video ends up taking up maybe one-ninth of my screen. Hardly worth it if you ask me.
...
Take solace in knowing the Blu-ray picture looks phenomenal and sounds equally impressive. For those wondering, the picture does shift as it bounces between 2.4:1 and 1.78:1 to compensate for the scenes shot in IMAX. Of course the picture is still cropped due to the sheer height of an IMAX screen, but it’s still nice to know your widescreen televisions will be completely filled for those IMAX moments we all came to love in theaters and once that score begins you just sit back and enjoy.

I have added a gallery of images giving you a look at the box art for the Blu-ray release as well as the limited edition Bat-pod release. Check them out below.

Senator Dianne Feinstein on Harvey Milk, Gay Rights, Marriage Equality

Maureen Dowd spoke with California Senator Dianne Feinstein about Harvey Milk and Proposition 8 in a column published over the weekend. Feinstein's well-known, soon to be extremely well-known gut-wrenching press conference following Milk's assassination, frames both the Friedman/Epstein documentary The Times of Harvey Milk and features prominently in Gus van Sant's biopic Milk, opening this week.

Feinstein also campaigned against Proposition 8 in an ad that was run statewide before the election.

Said Feinstein of Milk: "I was the one who found his body. To get a pulse, I put my finger in a bullet hole. It was a terrible, terrible time in the city’s history... It’s very painful for me. It took me seven years before I could sit in George Moscone’s chair. It took me a long time to talk about it. I was only recently able to talk about it."

On the validity of the nearly 20,000 same-sex marriages in California: "You can’t redact it. You can’t blot it out. It’s so intrinsic to the Constitution that you cannot remove it by a vote of the people."

On same-sex marriage in general, and gay adoption: "I think as more and more people have gay friends, gay associations, see gay heroism, that their views change. I think people are beginning to look at it differently, I know it’s happened for me. I started out not supporting it. The longer I’ve lived, the more I’ve seen the happiness of people, the stability that these commitments bring to a life. Many adopted children who would have ended up in foster care now have good solid homes and are brought up learning the difference between right and wrong. It’s a very positive thing."

To survive in Hollywood you have to be ambitious, a smartass, manipulative, etc. You have to be tough. I'm not defendig him, it's just none of these people we see on screen is the real person. They are all part of the game.

^^ I agree totally! The deal is you and including myself have become engrossed an a HW celebrity's life and I don't think it's a good thing. HW is a business and Jake, Reese, Austin, are all a part of it. Jake and Austin are small fish in this bowl. With all the gay rumours Clooney, Travolta, Spacey etc., etc. etc., Why haven't any of them come OUT?? Right now in Jake's life and CAREER, he is doing what he is suppose to do in this type of job (career). And the relationship with Reese may be just a little more, for now. With all the Gay rumors John, Tom has they are married with children. I know, I know, one should be truthful and not live a lie, but most of these people come out latter in life anyway, if then. And, some are bisexual and will have relationships (sex) with both sexes but will not come out as bisexual because of the negative HW image that would follow, unless you are a beautiful HW woman. Or, it's nobodys business but theres is their attitude.

The remedy: Don't get to close or overly involved in a Celebrity's life. They are human and have flaws also.

^No, You don't get the point!! If, Jake is gay and this is an (if), he owes you or me Nothing. He can come out when he wants to, not when you or I think he should. Ellen came out in her late 30's or 40's. Rosie also. They were NOT always out, and they (all) played the ambiguous role with their sexuality. Most of the people who have come out in HW are older than Jake. Even Lance Bass and NPH dated women. The point is, your eyes are on a HW celebrity that you think is gay and should come out. You or I DON'T KNOW if he IS GAY. If Chris Rock or Howie Mandel were in the closet most people would care less. My point with this last statement is, there are a number of people (celebritys) in sports, HW who are not OUT, and fly under the radar and they are not OUT! And, it will be their decision to Come out, not mine. If you are gay, be proud and when others get there, except them without ridicule. Be patient. It's Jake's Life!

“Four rounds of family festivities produce very little merriment for either its protagonists or audiences as holiday season romantic comedy Four Christmases slogs its way through a sub-90 minute running time. The pairing of Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon and the presence of an impressive supporting cast of veteran performers will probably get this Warner-distributed New Line/Spyglass production a sizeable and demographically broad opening weekend audience. After that, though, a couple of years as seasonal video and TV filler seems like the best prospect.

In the US, Warner will get a jump on other holiday season releases by opening the film (with a PG-13 rating) over the long Thanksgiving weekend. The timing, wide release pattern and marquee names should result in a decent debut, even with high profile melodrama Australia as competition.

Openings in most major international markets come between now and the New Year. But with neither star being as much of a draw outside the US, the eventual international take is likely to be relatively meagre.
...

The four-part structure of the story is supposed to gradually reveal Brad and Kate to each other, but it seems just as much an excuse to try out every family Christmas cliche in the book, from randy grandmas and spoiled kids to trouble-causing gifts and games that dissolve in acrimony.

The humour is consistently broad and brutal, favouring basic slapstick and easy targets. Then, in the story's last chapter, the tone shifts abruptly and not very credibly to warm and fuzzy.

Vaughn works hard to inject some life into the proceedings and his moments of apparently improvised comedy produce the few real laughs on offer.

In her first rom-com since 2005's Just Like Heaven, Witherspoon seems as uncomfortable in her role as her character is spending Christmas with the in-laws. And there's a notable lack of chemistry between the two leads in their one-on-one scenes together...”

I'm talking about the bearding which I find to be sickening. When did this blog become a haven for fangirls who pray that Jake is straight or bi?

first of all what do you call yourself, a fangirl or the gay police? Sure, I am a fan of Jake's and I'm gay, and you are????? Second, I don't know if he is bearding or not. Sure he could be, but I am not in Jakes inner circle, a family member or a close friend so I don't really know. I guess you DO! In my opinion I think there is a great posibility that Jake is gay and bearding, but I think the posibility of him being bisexual and dating Reese and having interest in men also is Greater. But at this time he (just as all other in the closet (bi or gay) celebritys) will lie about it if he (is) other than hetro. But since you Do know Jake's true sexuality and, Have proof of it, prove it. A picture will do and it would make my day. Until then I will put you in the catagory of the gay police. Or are you the gay police fangirl or boy?

I have the feeling reese don't care about making good movie now , she seems more in production and making money. It's not so bad , she is more a business woman and I think more or late she will give up acting.

^Because I'm not mad at Jake or don't hate Reese for throwing a monkey wrench in the J/A big romantic relationship. All gay people are not running around trying to OUT everbody. It's difficult enough to come to terms with being gay and excepting that you are different from what we are told are the majority of our race. Yes it gets better with time. So no, I will not try to out people, it's better when they come to terms with who they are just as I did. Until then Peace.. Here's an article in today's chicagotribune.com about why there are no out leading men in Hollywood (with quotes from Ted and references to Toothy Tile): http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_popmachine/2008/11/gus-van-sants-m.html

Anonymous said...

^^^

Why are there no openly gay leading men in Hollywood?

Gus Van Sant's "Milk" isn't just a mainstream-minded Oscar candidate; it's also a rallying cry.

With Sean Penn starring as Harvey Milk, the openly gay San Francisco supervisor who was gunned down along with Mayor George Moscone in 1978, the movie (which opens Wednesday) makes its message clear: Gay people must be "out" to be counted. This theme is particularly timely given California's passage of anti-gay-marriage Proposition 8 this month, but there's also a certain irony:

Here's a broadly targeted movie with marquee actors (James Franco, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch co-star), yet not only is none of the featured players openly gay, but there isn't one openly gay leading man in all of Hollywood. Even as gay people have become far more prominent and comfortable in culture and everyday life in the 30 years since Milk's death, not a single current A-list movie actor is "out."

Could it be that big movie stars simply don't swing that way? That lead actors defy all percentages and likelihood to remain a strictly heterosexual crowd? Or is the more logical explanation that while Hollywood preaches openness, it is fearful to practice it?

"It's the last frontier, and it will remain the last frontier for quite some time," said Bruce Bibby, who as Ted Casablanca writes the popular gossip column "The Awful Truth" for E! Online. "Some of our biggest moneymakers right now are absolute boy-on-boy kind of boys. It's America's dirty little secret. If they only knew." We won't play the who-is-and-who-isn't game here. But it's worth noting that at a time when everyone seems to know everything about everyone, and careers move on in spite of arrests, sex tapes, addiction-rehab cycles, affairs and babies out of wedlock, public acknowledgment of homosexuality remains a formidable taboo among top movie talent.

The most cited reason is money.

Van Sant, who is openly gay, laughingly called this an issue of "merchandising," noting that over the last decade leading men have become "industries within themselves. They're almost like industrial conglomerates." "Hollywood does not like anything that's going to threaten its bottom line," said Michael Jensen, editor of afterelton.com, a Web site devoted to gay and bisexual men in entertainment. "The idea of a gay leading man in a movie that's going to have a budget around $100 million—getting a studio to be the first one to take that chance is a challenging thing to do." As for the actors, Jensen continued, "there are already so many reasons for a casting director to turn a person down, and being an openly gay actor trying to get a romantic lead role, you're just giving them another reason."

The absence of gay lead actors—and, yes, we are talking primarily of men—stands in stark contrast to the progress activists say has been made in other areas. "The images in the media 30 years ago and the images today are vastly, vastly different," said Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). "You had 'Three's Company,' an over-the-top caricature of a gay man, and the other characters ridiculed him. Today a show like that would not be aired. We have 'Brothers & Sisters,' we have 'Desperate Housewives,' 'Ugly Betty.' Those are real portrayals."

A gay character on a TV show is no longer news, though GLAAD has tabulated that just 16 of 663 prime-time characters, or 2.6 percent, are gay. Openly gay celebrities in themselves also are no longer such an anomaly.

Singers Clay Aiken and Lance Bass have come out, as did comedian Wanda Sykes just last week. Elton John remains a huge concert draw and classic-rock fixture, and Ellen DeGeneres is welcomed into millions of American homes on her daytime talk show, just as Rosie O'Donnell was on "The View" and her own show. "People who watch and adore Ellen DeGeneres don't care one iota that she is gay, and they've known she is for a long time," said Mark Urman, distribution president for Summit Entertainment. "That is a very mainstream audience." Then again, DeGeneres and O'Donnell have done little acting since they opened up about their sexuality. People accept them for themselves, but it's unclear whether they'd accept them as anyone else.

This leads to a dynamic in which heterosexual actors such as Penn or Tom Hanks (in "Philadelphia") have no problems being believed as gay men—or murderers or mentally challenged characters—yet there's much doubt that an openly gay actor could be convincing carrying a romance with the opposite sex. “I don’t know why that is,” Urman said. “We know for a fact they’re acting.”

There also may be different standards for women and men. Although Jodie Foster does not discuss her personal life, while accepting an award late last year she thanked "my beautiful Cydney" in reference to the woman widely acknowledged to be her partner. Cynthia Nixon's revelation that she is a lesbian had no effect on her participation in this year's smash "Sex and the City" movie, and if anything, Lindsay Lohan has received more sympathetic press since she began dating DJ Samantha Ronson (and stopped acting so erratically).

Back on the male side, Ian McKellen is probably the most prominent "out" movie actor, having co-starred in the lucrative "Lord of the Rings" and "X-Men" franchises. But at 69, McKellen is well beyond the typical leading-man age, and he's British, which comes with a different set of cultural associations. The dashing Rupert Everett also is British, and his career never took off after he opened up about his sexuality, though making the Madonna bomb “The Next Best Thing” didn’t help.

The greatest male success story may be TV's Neil Patrick Harris, who is openly gay yet plays an enjoyably obnoxious straight man on "How I Met Your Mother." T.R. Knight also continues to fare well on "Grey's Anatomy" despite having essentially been outed by reports of former co-star Isaiah Washington's directing an anti-gay slur at him on set. But neither star is being asked to sell millions of multiplex tickets. Nor are those actors who have come out well after the peaks of their careers, such as Richard Chamberlain. Rock Hudson acknowledged his homosexuality only after he was terminally ill with AIDS in 1985.

Bibby has written a number of much-speculated-about blind items about a closeted actor dubbed Toothy Tile, who he reported was close to going public with his sexuality until his agents and publicists persuaded him not to—a situation far from unique. "Toothy Tile is a big star, but Toothy Tile wants to remain a big star, and that's the problem," said Bibby, who is gay himself. "Hollywood is a very creative community, and the creative arts have always been totally homo filled. But it's first and foremost a business. We've got to sell the product out to the masses in the rest of the country where it's not so gay filled."

The question is whether the industry's and actors' fears are justified or whether a megastar's coming out might not be such a big deal after all. Giuliano hopes his own experience could serve as an example. He'd been the mayor of Tempe, Ariz., for two years when he came out, and he was re-elected four times to serve eight more years. "I had a very misplaced understanding and a very misplaced fear of what life would be like if I was more authentic and more honest and more out," the GLAAD leader said.

McKellen considered coming out to be positive for his craft, saying in a 2005 interview: "Acting in my case is no longer about disguise; it's about telling the truth, and my truth is that I'm gay. I'm very happy for people to know that, and then I can get on with telling the truth about the character that I'm playing. That's why I say to other actors: If you really want to be a good actor and a successful one, and you're gay, let everybody know about it."

Urman said that at this point, "I don't think that anything to do with anybody's sexual orientation would or could harm somebody's career."

Bibby isn't so optimistic. "My opinion is it would be painful at first because America has shown it has such a fear of gay people," he said. "It would be very rough going for an actor to find that out, and I don't blame them for not wanting to find that out. They're not politicians. They're performers. They don't want to be held accountable for America's discomfort about homosexuality."

Still, Giuliano, who has seen Van Sant’s film, hopes some Hollywood A-listers follow McKellen's and Milk’s lead. “The message of ‘Milk’ is as important as it was 30 years ago, which is our visibility matters, and you need to be open,” the GLAAD leader said. “The changes we have seen in our society are because we are more open and the community is more visible than it ever has been.”

OK 5:10 PM, use your ARGUMENTS and tell us what you think about Reeke.

before today I have not posted for some time, but this will be my last post about them:
I think Jake and Reese (were) somehow put together by management. Somewhat pushed to date. I think they both were needy and were friends. Jake and Reese's life seem to be falling apart. Focusig on someone else is good when things are not going great in your life. I think it grew and they are good friends with occasional benefits. Yes, I said that. I think he's bi. But, I get the impression that it's conveiences for both of them. Get the feeling someone else is on both of their minds. (JMO) Don't know how long it will last, but if it ends, hopefully it will be on good terms. For the record, I do feel that Jake and Austin were friends with benefits with a posibility of more. Unlike most here, I think Jake would have went all out with the relationship with Austin, I don't think Austin was ready, too shy and wanted his career to be better. Something happened. Don't know what. Jake really seemed hurt, lost, and alone a lot over a period. I'm not one to get much from a snapshot which is seconds of a persons life, but he (was) photographed alot then. Not Now of course. Again, I happen to think Jake is bisexual, and With the right man, I think he will commit. (Cynthia Nixon ring a bell?) Then I guess I would call him gay. But only then.
I also believe that Chris and Jake are closer than most here think. Yes, I meant that!! Yes I do!!!

You don't need to worry about it, from the lack of respect and affection it's obvious Jake and Reese are not good friends.

Anonymous said...

I don't see it. Jake looks comfortable and relaxed around his friends and that's not how he looks around Reese.

This has always bothered me too. If a straight person can be believeable playing a homosexual role, there's no reason why the opposite can't be true, a gay actor believeable in a het role.

Anonymous said...

Maybe because average straight (homophobic?) guys would have a problem identifying with a gay male lead?

Anonymous said...

Maybe so, but it's irrational and ridiculous. An actor is an actor, playing a role. And beyond that, another human being, regardless of their sexuality or anything else.

Anonymous said...

I know, but identifying with the movie characters / actors is irrational too.

Anonymous said...

No, that is very natural and human - has been with us since Greek theater. It's called catharsis, and psychologists recognize that as natural and normal, as long as it stays within bounds. It's the entire reason for being for film, etc. :)

Anonymous said...

Or a big part of the reason for being. :)

Anonymous said...

OK, so being put off by the gay male lead could be part of the straight person's nature? Or is it simply homophobic?

Anonymous said...

7:43...both.

Anonymous said...

I think it's how they are taught - not how people naturally are. I think if society would teach/show that gay is ok, there would be no problems. In fact, I wish people would identify/empathize with real people more, as they do with celluloid heroes. We might not have as many problems. :)

Anonymous said...

What about gays?

Are they bored to death with straight movie couples? Do they enjoy straight love stories as much as straights?

Anonymous said...

Where do you come from, 7:51, Padukah? There has been so much conversation about this for the past two decades. There is a documentary called Celluloid Closet you might enjoy.

We'd probably be willing to include discussions about jake's acting if a film showed up now and then to talk about. But frankly, Brothers has no confirmed date. Who knows when we will ever see Nailed. 2010 is so far off, based on is his track record, POP will be delayed for some unplanned reason. So that leaves his sexuality and reeke as the main focus of Jake. He brought Reeke on himself.

5:53 has some good points about Jake appearing to go through a period of sadness. But Ted has said Toothy is still with his boyfriend, so I am attributing that to the parents divorce. I think Jake was very proud of his parents marriage. He brought it up many times in interviews and their break up was likely quite a blow. He also seems very close to his mother so probably felt her pain at being dumped for another woman.

No. It was just after Jake and Austin went to a Lakers game looking very miserable. They weren't pictured together for quite a while after that, and Jake looked depressed, so it was probably some kind of break-up.

....until his agents and publicists persuaded him not to—a situation far from unique.

Did Ted mention this detail before?

Yes. Many times. For example:

July 26, 2005

One confused Blind Vice

Toothy Tile, the rising young male star who secretly likes boys, is creating quite the media sitch. Not only am I told by same-sex inside sources that Mr. T. is still speaking with media representatives about coming out of the closet (much to the dissatisfaction of T.T.'s ten-percent crowd),

September 8, 2005

But I'm sorry to report, sweetie sleuth, that Mr. Double-T. will most likely go back even farther into the closet, as his peeps have had myriad heart attacks over the subject. And of course, T. himself nearly lost it when he almost got arrested for diddling his b-f off the Sunset Strip. Too bad. He coulda been a revolutionary contender.

December 13, 2005

Whereas our loveable, somewhat confused Tooth is constantly trying to figure out just what the hell he wants to do with his life--sexuality being not the least of his concerns--

February 24, 2006

Dear Ted:
What has happened to Toothy Tile? He was just so about to get out of the closet, having sex in public places, and then...nothing. Is he working his cute ass off?
Alejandro González
CĂłrdoba, Argentina

Dear South of the Borderline:
Yep, and--as I expected--T2 has given in to his adviser's latest pleas to stay undercover. However, I wouldn't write off this one entirely. Give Tooth another year of fake butt hounding, and I think you will see a little breakthrough--or breakdown.

There's a lot of similar mentions in the newer Toothy items as well, though Ted seems more to blame Jake personally these days rather than just his agents.
