August 29, 2008

Dear Ted:
Ted, I love your wit, and the new retina-burning format is starting to grow on me. You said there's a Baby Tile — is there another one on the way? Is it Ben Affleck?
Scutten

Dear Baby Q:
Such the good guess, babes, so right in so many brunet directions, alas, it's the wrong two-timing type.

Dear Ted:
After delving deeper in your articles and in others on other websites, I've come to a horrible conclusion — sure hope I'm 100 percent wrong — but is Toothy Tile Ben Affleck?

Dear Spin Jen:
Oh, wouldn't that just give J.G. a kick in her softer spots, which, of course, don't exist, so what the ef are we talking about? Right age and acting oeuvre, wrong dude.

"This video, new to me, provides a great opportunity to enjoy some golden Jake Gyllenhaal moments and soundbites, many of which I have not seen or heard before. Here we learn (and with Jake part of the fun is that you never can quite tell where the kidding stops and starts) that 21-year-old Jake got in shape with his boflex machine, to which he was introduced by friend Chris, and, in a very funny interview with Jake and Peter Sarsgaard at the Palm Springs Festival, we learn that Jake should be awarded his 'Desert Achievement' for his 'ridiculous roast beef'. Apparently it was so good, Peter was still eating it in sandwiches days later. Jake dedicates his award to 'my children and my dogs'."

Rachel Getting Married

Jonathan Demme pays homage to Robert Altman with the emotionally charged and darkly comic drama Rachel Getting Married, shown at the Venice Film Festival yesterday. A first-rate ensemble cast features the excellent Rosemarie DeWitt as Rachel; Bill Irwin as her father; a superbly frosty Debra Winger as her mother; and sundry musical figures, including Fab Five Freddy, Robin Hitchcock and Sister Carol East (like Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding, music drives this film and it’s one of the ways that the characters express their love for each other).

But, ultimately, the film belongs to Anne Hathaway. She combines a raw-nerved vulnerability and a showy obnoxiousness for the role of Kym, the prodigal daughter who checks out of an institutional rehab facility in order to attend her sister’s wedding, the psychological scars of her former life still very much on show.

“Rachel Getting Married” by Jonathan Demme

Fionnuala Halligan:
“Hand-held, free-wheeling and at times joyously spontaneous, the dogme-like Rachel Getting Married sees Jonathan Demme paying tribute to Robert Altman (in particular A Wedding) but there’s such a large dose of music in here it almost forms a genre of its own…Packed with superb performances, in particular from Anne Hathaway in the lead role and Debra Winger in a small supporting turn she makes memorable, Rachel Getting Married will undoubtedly be up for awards consideration in the major categories. While its two-hour running time and lengthy musical interludes may strain its commercial potential, this is a strong ticket for upscale audiences, both domestic and international, and ancillary should be decent for the same demographic.”

Ronnie Scheib:
"Brimming with energy, elan and the unpredictability of his “Something Wild,” Jonathan Demme’s triumphant “Rachel Getting Married” may just lay the wedding film to rest, being such a hard act to follow. Amid preparations for a biracial wedding, in comes the bride’s time-bomb of a sister (Anne Hathaway), fresh from a nine-month stay at her umpteenth rehab, ready to open every can of worms in the cupboard. Riding emotional rollercoasters to the ever-changing rhythms of the wonderfully eclectic in-house bands whose music never ceases, Demme’s self-styled stunner should appeal to arthouse auds”

Deborah Young:
“Jonathan Demme, last in Venice with “The Manchurian Candidate,” breathes a breath of honest cinema into a lackluster competition with “Rachel Getting Married,” a film whose lightness of touch rides a wave of family conflict to perfectly balance smiles and tears. Playing the spitfire sister of the bride, an award-worthy Anne Hathaway gives the story a clear central focus and offers Jenny Lumet’s subtle script some wiggle room to set aside a lot of the usual genre conventions without losing the audience’s attention. Though hardly a blockbuster comedy, the Sony Pictures Classics release should gather steam as the awards roll in and word-of-mouth spreads.”

Ok to criticize Jake or Georges

BUT

More seriously sometimes i don't understand the endlessly praise for some actors everybody call "great".

Deep for instance ,is great in what he does provided that the character is crazy and dropout, acting to excess and then... he always plays the crazy and dropout guy, acting to excess. Everybody is happy and praise his incredible" versatility" LOL

D Days lewis does one movie every 10 years to be sure to get an oscar each time . "the king" of methodist actors is so methodist than you end up only seeing the "method" in all his performances. Don't see sincerity just a guy who overacts to impress , boring and without surprise( except in lily rose's ballad in which he is moving and TRUE for once)

Di caprio , oh god , he looks like
a stuffed with hormones chicken to look older and always has the same forced expressions on his face wathever he plays. And yet , he will be nominated this years like each years LOL

list goes on .....

make excuse for my opinion but guess i am more in subtility than in the "too much" acting style.

What's the secret of Clooney's Hollywood career?

Spider-Man 4: Tobey Not a Lock—Yet?

Call it the battle of the contractual web weavers. Tobey Maguire's very interested in doing the next Spider-Man sequel, sure, and now there's word today that the deal is done. Not true at all, blab several top sources on the project, who say the news about Spidey 4—and maybe 5—is jumping the gun. These film insiders insist that the Tobey sealed-up talk is "premature," though it does look like Maguire is headed toward putting on that sexy suit again. Tobe-doll made roughly $17 mil on the last flick alone, minimum, right? What idiot wouldn't for that kind of loot?

Here's how it's going down:

Maguire's very much into the gig and has done three flicks so far in the franchise that's made, what, 2 or 3 billion bucks worldwide? Yep. But as happened before, negotiations for Maguire's participation in the Sam Raimi series have been, uh, challenging. “He is not the pleasant person to deal with,” insisted a knowledgeable contractual-type most familiar with Maguire’s past Spidey goings-down.

Word, whether accurate or not, is being put out that Sony just might not be interested in retaining Mr. M's involvement, should he take too long in deciding if his poker-playing butt wants to stay with the Spidey family or not.

Then, wham! This silken-spun spittle today that Maguire's all scared and a "lock" on the pic. Not so, gab my blabbers. Also, sources at Sony confirmed Maguire is by no means a lock yet. Additionally, a rep for Sony screamed bloody spidey bites that the studio has never looked at another actor besides Maguire for the lead.

Too bad. Always wanted to see how Tobey bud Jake Gyllenhaal's ass would look in that getup, but then, that's another item, isn't it?

Oscars are not always a reflection of talent, more often than not they're about politics like in George's case. But George is one of the big players in Hollywood, whereas Jake is.... well let's just say his career could be in big trouble if PoP isn't a big BO hit and even if it is he’ll probably become the next Brandon Fraser sadly. In order to get an Oscar he needs to muster a great performance in a good film or to be very influential in Tinseltown. Right now I can't see either happening. I think he should’ve stuck with indies but I guess he wants to be a big movie star.

Anonymous said...

The next Brandon Fraser? Oh please give me a break! Jake is more talented and picks better roles generally.

Anonymous said...

I think he should’ve stuck with indies but I guess he wants to be a big movie star.

It doesn't make sense to stick with indies, it's natural to go from indies to big movies.

Some big movie stars do indies from time to time. They are offered a lot of projects and are in the position to choose good ones - and that's a great position to be in.

Anonymous said...

""I just saw a test screening of this film and I must say... this is a very poor adaptation. It has none of the gritty feel of the original film, it never addresses the political issues at hand now that the Iraq war is in play, and basically comes off as a hollow imitation. All three of the lead actors give passable if not good performances (Tobey actually surprised me toward the end) but the film is just not hard hitting enough when it needs to be. Anyone interested in seeing this, just rent the original."

"The original wasn't political at all. That was what was so great about it."

Tree Hill Welcomes John from Cincinnati

Look who's floating into Tree Hill, N.C.: Austin Nichols, who starred as John from Cincinnati in the quirky and short-lived HBO series, has landed a 10-episode gig on the CW's One Tree Hill. Nichols is also familiar to TV fans from a short visit to Dillon, Texas, as a frisky teacher on Friday Night Lights.

The CW is not yet confirming details on Nichols' role, but by some online accounts he's playing a film producer who's eyeing Lucas' first novel — and who also perhaps once had his eye on Peyton.

oscars are so predictable i wonder how people can still give them credit.
You have to play showy characters to get the price.

"True Blood" - Anna Paquin plays the female lead in the series.

"When asked about his efforts to bring authentic gay storylines to the table, Alan Ball [Six Feet Under creator] emphasized that he's not a supporter of "gay for gay's sake" characters, looking at how gay inclusion has evolved over time:

"I certainly think one of the struggles for me in terms of being a gay man is not to let the culture define who I am, just by that. For the longest time when I was growing up gay characters in movies and TV were first psychopathic villains. Then the AIDS epidemic hit and they were these long-suffering, tragic creatures that sort of had to die so we could all feel really sorry. And then I think only recently have we gotten to the point where characters can be gay without being 'the gay character'. And that was certainly an intent of mine on Six Feet Under. I wanted David and Keith's story to be of equal weight - not less less important and not more important - than Nate and Brenda's. And I think we achieved that. And I like that - I'm not interested in seeing characters where that's the only thing that defines them, because I think that's kind of condescending."

Beautymist Ad

With a cymbol roll, the camera slowly pans up hosieried legs, then crosses green satin shorts and the No. 12 football jersey, revealing famous New York Jets team quarterback (1965-1972) Joe Namath. Namath says with a slight Southern accent and a smile, "Now I don't wear panty hose, but if Beautymist can make MY legs looks good, imagine what they'll do for yours." As the spot closes, Namath gets a kiss on the cheek from a young woman -- so we're not confused about his sexuality.

This controversial ad was quite remarkable for 1974 and for a football player. It was received with mixed feelings by a public that revered him. Nonetheless, Namath went down in history for it, making him as well known for wearing panty hose as for his record-breaking stats.

"They came with ad storyboards to our office, and I got a laugh out of it," Namath told Newsweek in 1999. "When they get up to me, I'm wearing green shorts and a football jersey. We asked our secretary, 'What do you think?' She said, 'It's cute but my daddy wouldn't like it. He doesn't think football players should wear pantyhose.' "So that started us thinking. We went out for about 10 days, trying to figure out if we'd offend someone. Finally I just said, 'Let's go with our gut feeling. It's humor. I can handle the heat.' And it was a lot of fun, though when I looked at it, my stomach turned. I didn't like anything about the way I looked.

"And some old-timers were perplexed. This guy in Alabama came up to me and said, 'You know, Joe Willy, I don't mind you wearing those there pantyhose like that, but Lord, son, did you really shave your legs?"

Loved this show and it's charactors! Hopefully I can plan my Sunday nights around this show, "True Blood" like I did "Six Foot Under".

Also, what drew me into this show was the points the Alan Ball stated. Especially Keith's and David's relationship. The charactors were not writen with an in your face overly Gay attitude. They had an, I'm a man, I have issues, I'm complex, I have needs, goals, and I'm Gay. The supporting charactors and the Guest charactors were very complex and well written also.

Will and Grace was funny, but can't say I watched one full episode. Although some of the guest were (well written) intrigueing and funny.

"Jake confirmed (Ted and Lisa) that he's going to play Broadway Joe Namath."

Jake has been lying, quite consistently, for the past ten months. What makes you think he's telling the truth now?

And if he hasn't lined up any other parts, besides the fabled 'unknown moon movie' since PoP was announced, what makes you think he's lined up the Namath bio-pic?

From all indications, this film is a stinker in the making, two steps removed from Nailed, which was another disaster that you could see coming like a freight train down the tracks.

Jake's pr people have been floating the Namath pic for months because it makes Jake look macho (like the non-existent Armstrong bio-pic), and because it's the only tangible film that we can arguably attach Jake to besides PoP. The film is also, I might add, utterly beneath Jake's talent level. This is the kind of schlock that McConnaughey specializes in, not a talented actor like Jake.

In other words, the Namath pic is a red herring, designed to distract us from more unpleasant truths - just like this shabby, pathetic, unconvincing fauxmance.

Jake nodded profusely as his mouth was full of food, and Lisa got carried away and thought to herself, God he is just so cute with a mouth full of food. Jake would be in a way sticking his neck out if he played a Broadway Joe who was thot by many at the time to be gay. It could be a great script about gender and celeb, though. But better to have the subject dead and gone, witness Graysmith and his hovering presence that had to be respected and reckoned with in Zodiac. This could have been a much more interesting film about "obsession" if the Greysmith character was freed up to be creepy as Jake first experienced him.

This closet lesbian B+ list lead actress on a hit network drama almost let the cat out of the bag so to speak. She had a little too much to drink and was finding the woman she was talking to attractive. She thought the other woman also played for the same team and so started flirting fairly aggressively. The woman however was straight, and also was rather loud about her shock in discovering our actress was a lesbian to the point where people noticed.

Tobey Maguire & Leo DiCaprio To Be Outed As Gay Lovers?

Apparently the Globe launched an extensive investigation into finding out if Tobey and Leo are gay lovers, even to the extent of sending reporter Marlise Elizabeth Kast to talk to Toby’s mother, Wendy Maguire.:

“I figured this subject would come up sooner or later . . . Those two are just free-spirited guys. Most of the friends they hang around with are gay. They’re comfortable with that. But I think Leo and Tobey are the crossover between men and women. They have feminine traits they are willing to accept. They aren’t ashamed to have any sort of title, even if that means someone calling them gay.” Kast continues, “Wendy continued to recount her liberal views, divulging details of how the two friends ’shared a bed and wore ribbons in their hair.’

Okay….Tobey’s mom doesn’t need to try and help him so much. Ribbons in their hair? Thanks a lot mom!

I personally know of a man who dated Leo in his younger years. From what I can tell, Leo would do many things to advance his career. They broke up and I have not heard of him dating another man since. Hey…we all do crazy things when we are young.

Maguire's mum 'denies Dicaprio gay rumour'

Tobey Maguire's mum has shot down gay rumours that have swirled around her son and best pal Leonardo DiCaprio.

Spiderman star Maguire and DiCaprio have been good pals for years, and regularly step out for dinner when they are both in New York. Wendy Maguire was asked about the gay rumours by tabloid journalist Marlise Elizabeth Kast, who has written about it in her book Tabloid Prodigy.

Kast recalls she approached Maguire's mum and told her she was working on an article for a gay pride magazine, instead of a tabloid magazine. "I figured this subject would come up sooner or later. Those two are just free-spirited guys," Wendy Maguire reportedly told Kast. "Most of the friends they hang around with are gay. They're comfortable with that.

"But I think Leo and Tobey are the crossover between men and women. They have feminine traits they are willing to accept. "They aren't ashamed to have any sort of title, even if that means someone calling them gay." Kast writes that Wendy also told her that the two pals "shared a bed and wore ribbons in their hair."

Maguire's representative Kelly Bush denied the report, according to the New York Post. "This is so ridiculous I don't feel the need to respond." DiCaprio's representative Ken Sunshine, said: "It's completely made up and untrue."

DiCaprio has been linked to a string of beautiful women, including models Gisele Bundchen and Bar Rafaeli. Maguire has dated Spider-Man co-star Kirsten Dunst, and has a baby girl with jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer.

Six degrees of separation: Jake and Sarah Palin

Homer Hickam Interested in Writing Sarah Palin Memoir

New York Times #1 bestselling author Homer Hickam, universally known for his classic memoir ROCKET BOYS (which became the major motion picture OCTOBER SKY starring Jake Gyllenhaal) has expressed interest in helping to write the memoir of Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

'After watching Governor Palin's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, I'm convinced her story is one the entire country-and the whole world-wants to hear,' said Hickam from his Huntsville, Alabama home.

Hickam recently completed work on the memoir of Anousheh Ansari, the self made multi-millionaire Iranian-American who became the
first Iranian in space, as well as the first self-funded woman to fly to the International Space Station in 2006. That book is slated for release in 2009.

Hickam added, 'Governor Palin's unique life story that has taken her from being a small town Alaskan woman to now a new force in the American political system is sure to inspire millions of people the world over. Of course, I'd love to help tell her story, one of grit, determination, and fortitude in the face of vast odds. It would be the memoir of someone who is like no other political figure alive today, an authentic and intriguing woman who has steadfastly stuck to her values and done things her own way. I'll give her the best compliment I can: She is a true Rocket Girl!'

5:18, Im sorry I dont keep files: but in a very early interview before Jake learned to keep his mouth shut (sort of0), he spoke of his first impression of Graystone as being kind of "creepy". He used that word - someone has the link. . .

Obessives, and Greystone is one, as is Fincher, a bit, dealing with a fascinating story about an obsessive - this could have been a knockout of a film. It was good, very good, but Greystone's character was severly limited by his own presence as a writer and hovering commentator on this film.

I wondered, what if Tobey got a nomination for best supporting actor, I heard somewhere if the performance is good enough he'll be placed in supporting and Jake in leading. What if Heath was nominated as well for supporting, for whom do you think Jake would vote, he's a member of the Academy. For Heath or Tobey?

^^I think for Tobey, just because if Tobey won the movie would become more prestigeous and more people would see it. It would be a tactical decision.

O gosh six degrees of separation is too close for Jake and the fundy wingnut. sorry to hear about this. bad news. nothin' I can do about it up here, ,I guess.

Heath, no doubt about it.

That should be Robert Graysmith, right? I've tried Google but couldn't find "creepy" interview.

Oh I remembered that the "gave him the creeps" quote came from London Guardian interview -

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2007/apr/21/features.weekend1

". . . Playing real people is problematic, but at least with Swofford and Homer Hickam in October Sky, "There was a sense that they had come to terms with the story they have told.

"He didn't get this sense from Graysmith at all, who still gave him the creeps, despite being an ostensibly nice guy. "He was the sweetest, kindest and most unassuming man. He sat down and said, 'I'm a really big fan, I'm so happy you're playing me.' I was like, thanks." But then, "Occasionally he would glance at things on me, and I'd think, what's he looking at? And he'd say things like, 'I like your shoes. Where did you get them? I had a pair of shoes like that once. What store did you get them from?' And then about an hour into it I realised if I didn't answer a question that he wanted an answer for, he would just throw it back in a different way. He was incessant, almost an obsessive journalist. He wouldn't let things lie."

Yes.

Ok so if after turning his back on Heath like he did he will think of selling DVDs rather than voting for someone who he once called close friend and who made him godfather to his only child then he's a worthless pos. And I very much doubt Tobey's performance will come anywhere near Heath's in TDK, so it’s not like he’d have to anything but be fair.
Even though my opinion of Jake is not good right now I find it hard to believe he'd sink that low. Or maybe I’m just naïve.

It wasn't my intention to insult Jake. I was just askig a question, because there is a possibility of this happening and I still believe he'd rather support his film in order to bring more atteention to it. I don't say it has anything to do with which one of the guys he likes better.
I see I'm the only one with this opinion though, most of the replies say Jake would have voted for Heath, if my scenario happended for real that is.

He didn't get this sense from Graysmith at all, who still gave him the creeps, despite being an ostensibly nice guy.

So not actually a direct quote from Jake, but the interviewer putting their own spin on it and putting words in Jake's mouth. But hey, why let a small thing like accuracy stand in the way of making Jake look bad.
And no, I'm not a Babbler, far from it.

True, it's not a direct quote, 9:47but I dont think it makes Jake look bad nor was that my intention in quoting this interview.

My point was that Jake really didnt have the freedom to develop a character that was, from what Ive gathered from other sources, an obsessive-compulsive personality, since Greysmith was so present as writer and on-set.

Dont see why the writer would make up this comment, but, as you say, it was not direct quote.

The film is also, I might add, utterly beneath Jake's talent level. This is the kind of schlock that McConnaughey specializes in, not a talented actor like Jake.

ITA. I may not place Jake in the same acting category as Heath, but Jake's still a tremendously talented actor and I cannot understand these film choices he's making. It's one thing to aim to be the next George Clooney...and up until Zodiac, he was going along nicely in that direction. But now he's approaching Ben Affleck territory, or, good grief, McBongo's Velveeta.

Professionally, I think Jake started to lose some cred when the Zodiac promo revealed that some of his co-workers thought he was a diva and not quite the actor he fancies himself: Fincher ripped him for "earnestness" in acting (among actors, this kind of jokey assessment is actually very damning), Mark Ruffalo (gently) tore him a new asshole, etc. Rendition, where Reese was miscast and Jake failed to bring life to the role, reinforced the perception of him as an actor of limited range. He then tried satire with Nailed - hope he does well in this, dark comedy may be his natural home - but the film itself looks B-list, as does everything else he now has lined up, including PoP. If PoP is a blockbuster, it will give Jake huge power in Hollywood, but will do little for his stature as an actor.

Maybe it's a case of recognizing his own limitations...or...losing his nerve? With Reese (who is no Meryl Streep) as his sidekick, he is no question aiming for mainstream acceptance, and he's choosing mainstream fare like she does. Maybe the kid raised by liberal democrats, with a hip sister and a cool sensibility is actually a conservative drone at heart. Vanilla ice cream.

" Jake and I have compared everything else"

Just ask around babe.
Jake and I have hit more homeruns together than A-Rod, ...I mean... A rod ...I mean... well eventually, they all bow down to The Sexiest Man Alive!!!

Clooney.

I feel that with the right director, the right role, and a good script, Jake could show convincing range as an actor, BBM had all those elements and Jake became a household name thanks to Ang's vision and two excellent writers. He was able to disappear into the character, making the audience beleive he was "Jack Twist". The chemistry between he and Heath was perfect. Unfortunatley he has'nt been able to maintain that level of range since. Not to say that he does'nt have it in him, obviously he does but his choices of roles lately are not "deep" characters. I'd like to see him do a role where I don't see "Jake Gyllenhaal" up on that big screen , but only the "character" he is playing. Heath was great at doing this, practically unrecognizable as "Ennis" or the "Joker". I wanna throw my hand over my mouth in shock and say "my god, is THAT Jake Gyllenhaal?!!. I'd just love to see him do something mature, "raw", "gritty" and "emotionally" touching. A role that he or any average guy his age can relate to while avoiding the *rom-com* element. "POP" sounds interesting, pays well, but that's kid stuff. Kids grow up.

Maybe not but it has a lot to do with the kind of person he is. You could be right though, especially since he would have nothing to gain from voting for Heath.

Anonymous said...

And what would Jake have to gain by voting for his movie? It's just one vote for God's sake. (Academy has +5,800 voting members.)

Would you do it? Would you vote for yourself because there is a small chance of making some additional money?
