Phonyspoon

Dear Ted:
Thanks for the update on Jake and Reese (and I think it's Gyllenspoon instead of Githerspoon, though you know best!). But why are you the only one out there reporting that these two are a sham? Elsewhere, all we hear about are engagement rumors.
Suzy
Chattanooga, Tenn.

Dear Let's Spoon:
Who says it's a sham, darling? They truly are adorably, terribly close. Just like sisters!

I am being objective. I've seen his movies, I've read the reviews, I've read his fansites. I've formed an opinion. Are you sure your judgement isn't clouded? Are you sure you're being objective? Who decides who is or isn't being objective? This will be my last post on this topic. I'm bored by it now and it's going nowhere.

I've said "trying to be objective" - taking into account what professionals think about Jake's acting and movies.

I've said "trying to be objective" - taking into account what professionals think about Jake's acting and movies.

Well he used to choose ( I think with the help of his parents) his projects wisely and he mostly performed solid. I wasn't too fond of his last few performances, but maybe I'll like his next few better?
In my opinion Jake isn't a very impressive actor. There are really much better young actors out there. Jake is ok, but also very lucky and his looks certainly help too.

I'd compare Jake's acting abilities to George Clooney's. I think he's the young George Clooney.

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson says she's still in shock over the death of fellow actor Heath Ledger, who was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday.

"I'm really just so very shocked," she said. "He was an incredibly sweet, kind-hearted and enthusiastic person.

"And, you know, he loved his daughter - I mean, that was like the light of his life. It's just a terrible loss."

He really loved his little girl. At the Venice Film Festival he said that he loves Matilda more than anything else in this world. :(

When I read a discussion like the one within the last 20-30 posts, even tho I disagree with a few things that have been said, I realize once again what a gem this place is. I dont know why most of the comments are about Heath today when we have such a juicy confirmtion from Ted that Reeke are just girlfriends. I guess everyone here is so sure of that already there is nothing left to discuss.

A Heath Ledger director's chair from "Brokeback Mountain" Paramount, 2005. A taller-than-average one with the black canvas backrest having the star's name on the back and the "Brokeback Mountain" logo on the front, both in white lettering. Included is a 'certificate of authenticity' from Paramount Pictures and Focus Features indicating that Ledger used this chair during the film's production.

Jake impressed me very much in October Sky.

With the exception of BBM, it's still his best acting to date.

In post-BBM movies it's like he stopped trying to be better.

This Is Our Youth

AN ABSOLUTE first for me is the American play This is Our Youth at the Garrick, inasmuch as it is the first play I have ever seen in which three young screen stars have presumably decided to strut their stuff and see how far they can succeed in London's West End.
...
The actors are all excellent, and that also is a revelation. These are primarily movie actors, and one of them (Jake Gyllenhaal) is making his stage debut.
...
The broads can also take in Jake Gyllenhaal as the clumsy, very dumb-seeming charmer Warren. His comic timing (which can only improve as this is his stage debut) is already awesome.

I still don't believe I have seen the best play in London and that it is being played by a group of people of whom I have never heard. I can only say WOW!

I think he's reached his peak. Not sure there's much more substance or passion there to bring him to the next level. I think he's used to easily getting everything he wants so he doesn't have the drive or motivation that you need to really excel. Brothers could be a great role but I think we'll see more of Jake earnestly playing himself. Nailed looks like a throw-away. PoP won't require any great acting skill.

Leonardo DiCaprio gets his geek on

Will the cherubic star convince as the egghead who founded Atari? And which actors are best at slipping on the geek's sneakers? How do you commit genius to film? It's a question Leonardo DiCaprio will no doubt be asking of himself after it was announced that he is to take the role of Nolan Bushnell, creator of pioneering computer game firm Atari in a movie to be called, surprisingly, Atari.

Bushnell was as much a salesman as he was an inspired engineer. At the same time as running Atari in the late 70s he was also building the Chuck E Cheese chain of pizza restaurants (a chain that later ran into the ground). So DiCaprio could yet play Bushnell more as business brain than geeky genius. That would be a shame though, as the dramatic challenge involved in playing a brainbox is one of the most enjoyable in Hollywood.

Times have changed since the only requirements necessary to play a brainiac were a pair of thick spectacles and a spotted bow tie. Perhaps it was Matt Damon who broke down the barriers, his genius janitor in Good Will Hunting beginning a trend for portrayals of great minds that were both troubled and, fortunately, beautiful.

Speaking of a beautiful mind, Russell Crowe is not your stereotypical geek, but you can imagine the rambunctious Aussie delighting in the role of schizophrenic mathematician John Nash. It was an opportunity to move the conception of genius on again; from a frail ditherer in spectacles to a butch paranoiac in too-short trousers. Both Crowe and Damon managed to break from the tradition that required a change of dress to impersonate an intellect. Instead genius became associated with emotional vulnerability, something that could be expressed through a troubled look from a swoonsome male.

Without this twist Jake Gyllenhaal might never have had a career. Released the same year as A Beautiful Mind, Donnie Darko cast Gyllenhaal as someone who was both blessed with a metaphysical potency and unable to take his eyes off his shoes. Oh, and he looked awfully handsome too, in his slovenly way. Since then, Gyllenhaal has produced a variation on this performance in the majority of his movies, albeit playing characters with varying levels of smarts. From the vulnerable maths student of Proof to the sensitive squaddie of Jarhead via the instinctual, but unusual, cartoonist-detective of Zodiac, he's done em all.

So where next for the genius? Even more emotionally wrought studies like Benedict Cumberbatch's Hawking for the BBC? Or will the genius be normalised? Become the everyday? I guess we'll see when Ed Norton takes on the role of mild-mannered nuclear physicist Bruce Banner later this week.

Blind Item from Crazy Days and Nights
#2 - How do I describe this guy? B list actor with a name that seems to cause some confusion. Very little television. Nope this guy is all about films. Big films, Top grossing films, independent films. Great actor but also underrated. Award winning but nothing big. On the set of his newest film he had a little thing going with a co-star. Nothing too blind-itemish about that. The co-star is married so that adds a little spice, but what really makes it blind worthy is the fact that this married B+ list co-star with A name recognition is a guy.

Smart Ledger Made Sure Daughter Would Be Wealthy Before He Died

"Tragic actor Heath Ledger left secret millions stashed away for his daughter Matilda, according to new reports.

It was feared the two-year-old would miss out on the star's fortune because Ledger never updated a will he signed off on two years before he died in January.

But now in depth research carried out by U.S. magazine Life + Style has unearthed new details suggesting little Matilda will inherit millions when she comes of age.

According to a source, Ledger formed the Thank You for the Trust trust shortly after Matilda's birth, making his daughter and her mother Michelle Williams co-trustees of high-priced properties he owned.

Though Ledger's will amounted to just $145,000 (GBP72,500), the smart star made sure his daughter was well provided for thanks to his properties and future income.

The insider tells the publication, "He knew exactly what he was doing when he made Matilda co-trustee. There's no way he would have left his daughter without a dime. She was the world to him."

The source says the trust Ledger created includes a $3.1 million (GBP1.55 million) home in Los Angeles, a $2 million (GBP1 million) property nearby and a duplex in Brooklyn, New York - currently valued at $4.5 million (GBP2.25 million)."

Ben Affleck has blamed his relationship with Jennifer Lopez for his career slump.

The actor, who dated J Lo from 2002 - 2004, has revealed that his high profile romance with the singer/actress hurt his career, as the media glare on the couple had eclipsed his silver screen appearances.

"It was probably bad for my career. What happens in this sort of bleed-over from the tabloids across your movie work," People quoted him, as telling Details magazine. "I ended up in an unfortunate crosshair position where I was in a relationship and [the media] mostly lied and inflated a bunch of salacious stuff for the sake of selling magazines. And I paid a certain price for that. Then, in concert with some movies that didn't work…" he added.

But, leaving his low days behind, the Pearl Harbour star is now hoping for success with his directorial debut Gone Baby Gone, which revolves around the kidnapping of a young girl.

"There's something really great about directing. I feel like [Gone Baby Gone] is a linchpin for my life. My career. I have a lot riding on it. I want it to work. Badly. I mean, a****** movie comes out on 2,800 screens? I've been there and it's embarrassing," he said.

SHIA LABEOUF
Age 21
Last Seen In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Career Box Office $2.3 billion*
Asking Price $10 million

While Hollywood execs were desperately seeking the next leading man (Is it Colin? Is it Jake?), this scrawny kid star (Holes) was slowly maturing into the Gen-Y mover of their dreams. His first solo outing, Disturbia, opened to an impressive $22 million — an achievement quickly dwarfed by his next film, Transformers, which grossed a massive $708 million worldwide. Steven Spielberg, who executive-produced the latter, took a shine to the kid, casting him in Indy 4. ''He's accessible without being soft,'' says one top studio exec. ''There's a bit of an edge there. I think he's fantastic.'' He's most often compared to a young Tom Hanks, but LaBeouf has built a template closer to Cruise, lining up action franchises and then injecting them with emotion. Now he just needs to prove he's got enough stamina, and good sense, to keep his career ablaze without getting burned by fame or sidetracked by momentary lapses in judgment (see: Walgreens arrest).

NEXT UP FOR SHIA LABEOUF The terrorism thriller Eagle Eye, followed by (no surprise) Transformers 2.

ROBERT DOWNEY JR.

Age 43
Last Seen In Iron Man
Career Box Office $1.6 billion
Asking Price $12.5 million

Hollywood loves a comeback story — and Downey has a doozy. Those missteps back in his 30s (e.g., getting busted in a Palm Springs hotel room with cocaine and a Wonder Woman costume) could have destroyed any actor's shot at resurrection. But Downey climbed back with a series of smallish roles in smart pictures (Good Night, and Good Luck, Zodiac) and then strapped a jet pack to his career with Iron Man, which has grossed more than $500 million worldwide. ''Years ago that guy was waking up in strangers' beds — he was so out of the picture,'' notes one top talent agent. ''Now look at him. He's in a great place.'' The industry's rooting for him to win, but at his age, Downey doesn't have room for mistakes. He'll have to churn out consistant good work to keep his newly bankable, franchise-friendly image aloft.

NEXT UP FOR ROBERT DOWNEY JR. This summer, there's Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder, in which Downey plays a black man (sort of), followed this fall by the tony drama The Soloist.

ANNE HATHAWAY

Age 25
Last Seen In The Devil Wears Prada and Becoming Jane
Career Box Office $878 million
Asking Price $5 million

Could she be the next Julia Roberts? It's a tall order, to be sure, but of all the contenders to the throne, Anne Hathaway may have the best shot. After being launched from obscurity as the star of Disney's $300 million worldwide-grossing Princess Diaries films, Hathaway deftly left the kiddie pool behind by polishing her acting chops (and, ahem, baring her chest) in the R-rated, Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain. Then she held her own against no less than Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. ''Annie's just going to keep going up and up,'' raves one studio exec. ''She can do anything.'' Well, almost. The doe-eyed gamine has one more mission before she can ascend to the next rung on the A-list ladder. ''She needs to appeal to men,'' says one producer. True enough. And playing a slinky secret agent with legs for days in Get Smart ain't a bad first step.

Jake Gyllenhaal: Not restaurant shopping after all?

While reporting an article on celebrity restaurants for Variety's upcoming Inside L.A. issue, I thought I should check out a slew of reports in late April that foodie Jake Gyllenhaal, who seems to spend most of his time in L.A. grazing at Joan's on Third and M Cafe de Chaya, was planning on opening an organic restaurant. The reports had him shopping for locations to go into business with his friend Chris Fischer, a chef at Babbo in New York, and even researching menu ideas on a bike trip of Tuscany with Reese Witherspoon. But his publicist Mara Buxbaum says there's absolutely nothing to that report, which was completely false. Ok, thanks for clearing that up, but if he changes his mind, can I come to the opening party, please?

The fear of spending too much time around Chris was just to much for wimpy Jake to take. Yet another sign of Gyllenhaal madness. What's next? We hear that Jake was at his grandmother's bedside when she died? That Maggie actually attended Heath's funeral in disguise?

The problem with Hollywood is that it is a monopoly. There is only one publicist: CAA. If you're not with them, you don't get work. It really is pretty evil. That is how they manage to force gay actors to stay in the closet. If you step out, you're fired.

Did you know that Heath brought Michelle to CAA? I hope she's still grateful to him.

I agree with 2:20 PM as well.

Rumor was false, probably just another lame attempt to promote Reeke.

CAA is not a publicist.

CAA is an agency. There are plenty of other agencies in Hollywood. CAA is at the moment one of the top three.

Get your facts straight.

Anonymous said...

There is only one publicist: CAA.

You are confusing CAA which is an agency - Creative Artists Agency with publicists which are employed by CAA and each represents their own share of actors. It's not the same thing. They are many publicists, but only one CAA.

Considering that there were/are rumors about Chris (One of the resons he supposedly left Babbo)i'm not surprised.

Theonly thing is, it was a mainstream rag that first reported it and they not only mentioned Chris but had pics of him and Jake in the rag, odd for a "civillian" which means it was floated by Jake's PR IMO. The added Reese part was probably added by an intern/copy person.

Jake doesn't have time to shop around with Chris looking for space or going to Italy this summer, he is filming Pop, something like that sounds more hands on which means he would have to take soem time off, nd that ain't happening.

It sure took long enough for the denial, I guess that's because Chris' name was attached to it.

Anonymous said...

Jake didn't have time to bike through Tuscany back in April when the story was floated, he had already agreed to do Pop before he started filming Nailed, way to go Buxbaum leaving Chris out there, I thought Jake and the Gyllenhaals were determined to "protect" Chris' privacy after all the BS that happened last year.

What rumors?

Jake will never open a restaurant. The business is grueling and demanding and very few restaurants actually make it. Jake doesn't have what it takes to make a go of it.

Anonymous said...

What are you talking about?

Anonymous said...

"I knew Reese wouldn't be biking through the Tuscan hills. She couldn't even walk a quarter of a mile for the Avon walk."

"Rumor was false, probably just another lame attempt to promote Reeke."

That's the biggest mystery here. What part of the rumor was false and what part was true? Some parts of the rumor promote Reeke and some don't. We have :

1. Jake's starting a restaurant (neutral)
2. the restaurant will involve Chris (anti-Reeke, specter of liaison with Chris)
3. Jake's going to Italy with Reese to get restaurant ideas (anti-Reeke)

What part of the rumor was Buxbaum referring to? And since when is Jake's pr machine interested in dispelling rumors and lies? The entire fauxmance is one big lie!

I think that there's a shred of truth in this rumor, and that Buxbaum can't control idle speculation about Jake and Chris. Jake has always wanted a restaurant, but the rumor mill is still buzzing, especially given Ted's persistent musings about Jake's homosexuality. Better to shut the whole thing down than parse the facts.

Anonymous said...

No publicists at CAA. They PR people work for individual stars if they are big enough or when releasing a film a studio hires a PR firm to take care of the cast and promotional appearances.

Jake has a publicist that doesn't work at CAA as does Reese. They have the same manager but not the same publicist. Managers tend to oversee all aspects of their client lives and careers poking their noses into the work of both the agents and the publicists.

Anonymous said...

"3. Jake's going to Italy with Reese to get restaurant ideas (anti-Reeke)"

Make that pro-Reeke.

What part of the rumor was Buxbaum referring to?

First part - Jake starting a restaurant:
"I thought I should check out a slew of reports in late April that foodie Jake Gyllenhaal ... was planning on opening an organic restaurant."

No publicists at CAA.

I see, thanks.

In NY some members of the stalkarazzi were gunning for Jake and Chris in '06 because Jake of the rumors and that Jake was always hanging out with him while in NY. They would hang out in front of where they were staying, go to Babbo's and hassle Chris' co-workers, etc. No surprise that he quit.

The "problem" with that was Chris financially was able to not work for awhile and free to travel with Jake to L.A., TX, MV (where he was born and raised and still has a place) he even traveled with him to Morrocco.

Don't you remember when J. Jackson did his stupid baby story that he linked Chris' name to it and it was picked up? Not by NE, but a lot of other places.

Everything went quiet then this pops up, again his name is attached to Chris' and i'm sure there was some buzzing, the only reason why we get a denial now is because she was asked directly.

There may have been some truth to it and stuff was added but it certainly doesn't sound like something he would have time for right now.

Anonymous said...

3:32, you sound like the original WFT troll with all of this "insider" info about Chris. Chris was always the safe male for Jake to be seen with. The baby rumors never stuck with Chris. Austin has always been the focus of the rumors.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone seen Wayne Johnson around?

Anonymous said...

Chris is Jake's best friend there's nothing more.

Anonymous said...

At this particular point in his career I doubt Jake would have the time to particate in actually runing a restaurant. At this particular time in his career he is busy being available for the ladies and running around with his baby looking macho.

I am sure Jake would be able to help Chris with a restaurant through investment and name recognition. I am sure Jake still does have friends in his private private life.

Anonymous said...

We know that Chris is Jake's best friend and nothing more but it sure didn't look that way to the NY paps with all the rumors swirling around Jake, andthen he abruptly left a really excellent gis at Babbo's. He then resurfaces in L.A. with Jake? It doesn't take much with them, the baby crap didn't stick with either Chris nor Austin because it was bs, the only reason why NE didn't add his name was becasue he isn't a public figure and can sue.

That didn't stop other blogs and sites including ONTD to yak about it. This isn't insider info BTW, one of the women that runs one of Peter Saasgaard's fan sites and lives in NY posted about this back in Aug. 06 on IHJ, i forgot what thread but it was around the time when Jake was in MV, she knew where Peter, Maggie and Jake and Chris lived and she walked around to the block where Jake and Chris stayed and say some paps in front of their place. One of the neighbors said that they both are in MV and you are wasting your time.

She wondered how they knew they were in MV. The Babbo stuff came from other waitstaff in the area and Babbo. The blowup that some fans had in Oct. of '06 with Jake's father was partly due to Chris, who he treats like a son, it wasn't just about Maggie, Ramona and Jake.

Love Cycle?

Lance Armstrong, of course, made Time’s 100 recently. Now, darlings, that’s not a list of the 100 most opportunistic romancers in the world (no, that’s a compilation I’m thinking of starting up shortly, we’ll call it the “Colin Collection”—after Farrell, natch—and we'll mention all the hugely inappropriate nooky choices made in this biz. Gloria Allred will be afforded CNN bites for a decade). Lance, whom I now adore but didn’t always, was acknowledged for all the good cancer work he pushes through with the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Hooray!

But what Mr. A, who has such nice legs (and, yes, I’ve seen them up close and personal, just like Sheryl and a few other assorted, as well, smitten celeb types), should be receiving heartfelt accolades for is romancing—or not?—the interesting group of boldface peeps. I’d be tempted to throw in Matthew McConaughey right on top, but that would be, like, ridiculous. Matthew on top! Forget about it!

Well said, Ted. Thanks for giving us the reality check on Heath's nasty and grotesque drug addiction problem.

No one needs a reality check about how Heath died or the fact that he had substance abuse problems. So did RDJ before he came back from the brink, but now that he's clean(er) and has box office success, everyone loves RDJ. Hypocrisy.

Because Heath didn't come back from the brink, you want to define him solely as a druggie and no longer as an actor and human being. Sure it's ridiculous to deify him, but just as nasty and grotesque to reduce him to nothing but the way he died.

I wonder if this is what Jake has done. I like to think he's better than that. At least Maggie seems to condemn this kind of character assassination. I suspect that Reese, with her morally superior mind, is cheerleading Ted on this one.

Forbes released the “100 most powerful celebrities list” a ranking considering both earnings and fame. It seems that Reese ‘number 1 female actress’ days are over. She is ranked 60 and mostly because of her Avon contract. She is below Angelina Jolie (3), Cameron Diaz (14), Jenifer Aniston (17), Keira Knigtley (47), Jenifer Lopez (54) and Nicole Kidman (57).

“#60 Reese Witherspoon: Witherspoon will star in the big-budget comedy Four Christmases this winter. She also landed an estimated $30 million, three-year contract to pitch Avon cosmetics.”

Give me break! Jake needs good PR just as bad as Reese does, it's 50/50.

"The main goal of the fauxmance was and is good PR for Reese."

Jake needed it also. But, seems like Reese is laying the foundation to not act as much. One of the online news sites, has small blurb with a quote from her saying that producing was just as satifying as acting. That's a good thing if she only produces films. Saves us from looking at that chin and her face which looks to be melting together.

ITA 6.28 It amazes me that so many people blame Reese for the fauxmance when it is Jake and Reese both who are involved. Both have to gain and both are to blame. But according to some Jake can do no wrong. Pretty sad to be so biased.

Anonymous said...

Of course, there is PR for Jake too, but it was never 50/50.

Reeke PR is about Reese and her "so much better than Ryan boyfriend", a tool to make her look good, desirable, traditional.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, but maybe their PR teams are getting the message that phonyspoon isn't working that well anymore. The rag mags pretty much don't mention them except for OK and on popular online gossip sites (just jared, etc.) half of the comments when theres pics of them talk about phonyspoon. Maybe Jake away filming can begin to start the distance is breaking us up scenes.

Probably because she's more famous, but I don't think that's the only reason. "Her friends" told Reese to forget Ryan and go after Jake in November 2006 - Reeke was about her from the start.

No, the goal is good PR for both jake and and reese. Do you really think Jake would be doing this if he got nothing out of it? I can't believe that after everything that has happened some fans are still completely delusional about Jake!

Anonymous said...

The fauxmance is for both Jake and Reese. Jake is bearding so that he can hush the gay rumors and get roles like PoP. Reese desperately needed to appear as a strong confident and sexually attractive woman after Ryan humiliated her with his cheating. Reese is the more powerful player here so she and her people probably stage most of the fauxmance for her advantage. Besides, it's evident that the rags are mainly interested in Reese. Jake is just the new Ryan without an identity of his own.

Anonymous said...

And the fauxmance started right after her divorce was announced. It was a plan to create a new image for Reese.

And the fauxmance started right after her divorce was announced. It was a plan to create a new image for Reese.

... and for Jake, don't forget.

Anonymous said...

Reese was lucky that Jake was so desperate himself. The whole problem for Jake is that this fauxmance has stripped him of everything that made him sexy and appealing.

Anonymous said...

At first is was all Reese and she was the one that got all the press. She still is the one that is getting her picture on all the mags. That the way is goes though because she is the women. The rag mags are made to appeal to women. Women want to know what life is like for Hollywood starlets.

Jake got into this a lot more recently as far as enthusiasm. Landing two blockbusters will do the trick.

I love that Reese has dropped to #60 on the powerful women list. That must be pissing her off big time. She is working for Avon(or rather stealing money as they say in pro sports) but has very little work in the movie industry going on right now.

So I say right now Jake may have the edge in this little deal.

Anonymous said...

Is PoP going to be a blockbuster? I've been looking at the video games to movies box office and it looks as though they haven't done all that well.

Anonymous said...

No one can forget that there would be no fauxmance without Jake.

The fauxmance would still work fine if it started 4-5 months later. But PR didn't wait - new romance rumors are so much better than gossiping about divorce, cheating, Ryan and Abbie.

It is way too early for such predictions, but I believe it will be a box office success.
