Dr. Parnassus, Session Three

Feb 12, 2008

Q: Doctor Parnassus, can we talk Ted?
Doctor Parnassus: Despite my commodious competence with languages, Tedspeak is a derivative dialect of interrrelated involvedness and exaggerated enigmatic implication that is difficult to deconstruct into actual —
Q: I mean, why won’t Ted unmask Toothy Tile?
Doctor Parnassus: Oh lambkin. Would Classic Coke reveal its formula? Would a hairdryer blow without its motor? Would primates fly out of my —
Q: He’s pretty much said it’s Jake Gyllenhaal, but some still don’t believe.
Doctor Parnassus: Belief is over-rated, my pet. Disbelief is what matters.
Q: So we shouldn’t believe that Jake is Toothy?
Doctor Parnassus: No, you should disbelieve that he isn’t.
Q: Ah. So how do you explain the girlfriend?
Doctor Parnassus: In standard Myers-Briggs testing, Ms R exhibited maladaptive control issues coupled with elements of Doris Day Derangement Syndrome (DDDS). This first manifests itself in acute-onset PDA, usually with additional exhibitionism at key junctures in professional life —
Q: What I meant was, why does Toothy have a girlfriend?
Doctor Parnassus: Toothiness is not next to godliness, dear kumquat! And you do know that boring sex is pornoliscious, don't you? Dull is exciting, safety is danger! Yes, conflicted individual mental processes hunger to explore the full range and subtlety of human experience. It’s also called research.
Q: Moving on…I know this is crazy, but Ted seems to hate Heath.
Doctor Parnassus: First, “crazy” is a meaningless terminology that I categorically expunge from my lexical semantics. Second, during neuro-linguistic programming sessions with me, Theodore-Bruce — let's leave his dissociative identity disorder for another discussion, shall we — revealed his true emotions for Mr Ledger and, I assure you, they were quite wet.
Q: Then why give Jake a pass on paying respects to Heath?
Doctor Parnassus: Sweet pickle, ever heard about reverse psychology? I tried it on myself once and it made me kiss a woman.

‘Nailed’ filming resumes — again

Shooting resumed Monday in Columbia on the movie “Nailed,” according to a movie spokesperson.

Production was interrupted Thursday for a second time when members of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees were ordered to stay away from the set after not being paid, Variety.com reported. The first work stoppage occurred May 9 when actors — including stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel — were told not to report to work by the Screen Actors Guild.

Capitol Films, the company backing “Nailed,” reportedly is suffering a financial crunch, forcing other productions to be sidelined as well, according to Variety and Deadlinehollywood.com, an entertainment blog.

In “Nailed,” an uninsured small-town receptionist (Biel) suffers from a freak accident that boosts her libido into overdrive. She goes to Washington to lobby for the rights of “bizarrely injured” people. There she meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal), who takes advantage of her sex drive.

Just Change The Names

OK, last week I commented on the story some rag wrote about how Jake was ready to wed Reese despite the fact he hadn't even proposed to her and they hadn't even spoken about her. This week it's time for Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel. I am going to print the story first as it was published, and then again, but substituting Jake and Reese for Justin and Jessica.

Justin Timberlake is ready to name a date for his wedding to Jessica Biel, say reports. The popstar has apparently decided that he wants to settle down with Biel and is researching possible venues for them to tie the knot.

"Justin is 27 and thinking about marriage and kids," said a source. "For the first time in his life he is feeling settled and has definitely decided to pop the question to Jessica. "He is so happy with her. They spent quite a bit of time apart recently when Justin was working with Madonna.

"That made him certain Jessica was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with." According to The Sun, Timberlake's first choice of venue is the West Indian island Mustique, which doesn't allow paparazzi to visit.

An insider commented: "Although Justin has lived his whole life in the public eye, he feels his wedding is the one day that should remain private. "To get all his close friends and family to Mustique will cost a fortune, but he can’t put a price on how he feels about Jessica." The 'SexyBack' singer has previously been romantically linked to Britney Spears, Cameron Diaz, Dannii Minogue and Scarlett Johansson.

And now lets substitute

Jake Gyllenhaal is ready to name a date for his wedding to Reese Witherspoon, say reports. The actor has apparently decided that he wants to settle down with Witherspoon and is researching possible venues for them to tie the knot. "Jake is 27 and thinking about marriage and kids," said a source. "For the first time in his life he is feeling settled and has definitely decided to pop the question to Reese.

"He is so happy with her. They spent quite a bit of time apart recently when Jake was working with Jessica Biel. "That made him certain Reese was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with." According to The Sun, Gyllenhaal's first choice of venue is the West Indian island Mustique, which doesn't allow paparazzi to visit.

An insider commented: "Although Jake has lived his whole life in the public eye, he feels his wedding is the one day that should remain private. "To get all his close friends and family to Mustique will cost a fortune, but he can’t put a price on how he feels about Reese."

The 'BrokeBack' actor has previously been romantically (how about just linked?) linked to Kirsten Dunst, and Lance Armstrong, Austin Nichols, and Jennifer Aniston.

Didn't really have to change much at all. This article will work well in any situation. Try it out with any couple that has not actually got engaged yet. My blog is free so if it is crap a few times a week or everyday, who cares. But honestly, I think when you are paying for gossip you deserve something better than this load of crap.

Jake's PR is working overtime to distract us from his personal and professional embarassments.

Jessica's PR is using the same manual.

Bravo, Ent lawyer. His site is a mixed bag but he is better than most on the machinations of Hollywood and he is 100% right on this. These wedding stories are not gossip, they are total crap used to fill space.

Real gossipists supply real, truth-tinged dirt, usually long before it makes its way to mainstream newspapers. Perez gained cred because he broke some real stories in the early days. (Now, he has relationships with publicists and the tenor of his site has changed.)

Brokeback Parody Alert: Indiana Jones and the Gay Rabbi

I remember the days when a Brokeback parody landed in my inbox three times a day. Well, here's one that takes on this summer's presumed blockbuster. For those of you who haven't totally quit the genre, here's Indiana Jones and the Curse of the Gay Rabbi, featuring Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder:

Q: Then why give Jake a pass on paying respects to Heath?
Doctor Parnassus: Sweet pickle, ever heard about reverse psychology? I tried it on myself once and it made me kiss a woman.

I'm not sure what he wants to say with that, but I do believe Jake sincerely liked Heath.
I read a translated interview with Jake from the Italian Vogue (before Heath's death) and supposedly he said (I don't know how correct the person translated it) that the best out of Brokeback for him was Heath Ledger, he is a true friend. This makes you think!
In no way will I excuse the lack of paying respect or the almost daily Reeke love fest shortly after Heath died, but I do think he liked him. There must be a reason for him to act this way, either the relationship with Reese changed him for the worse or they continued with the business in a pretty inappropriate time.

I 100% believe if you are friends with someone, respect and like the person and on top of that are physically close (kissing, cuddling, even if it's for a film) to them, there is no way you don't develop special feelings for that person! Just no way!

Italian Vanity Fair interview

COVER PAGE: Jake Gyllenhaal, the Cowboy is alone now. “Brokeback Mountain has given me the most important experience of my career, and a friend indeed”. His name was Heath Ledger, and he isn’t here anymore.

INSIDE PIC: “Fame is dangerous. I have seen so many actors gone awry. And I know that when you go through bad moments, those who help you are those who really love you.” This is what Jake Gyllenhaal said 3 months ago. Can you imagine how he feels now that his best friend Heath Ledger, isn’t here anymore? “WHEN SUCCESS BURNS YOU DOWN”

PAGE 78
New Mexico, January 2008
Sitting on the director’s chair, Jake Gyllenhaal’s staring at nothing. He’s there, but he’s not really there. On Tuesday 22nd , when he learnt about his friend Heath Ledger found dead in NY, he had disappeared from the set of Brothers. He came back after 2 days, shot his scenes, but his mind was faraway. To protect him from paps and nosey people, Director Jim Sheridan has doubled surveillance. “I’ve got a duty”, “I have to take care of Matilda”: these are the few sentences that his collegues could pull out of him. “Brokeback Mountain” sealed the friendship between him and Ledger, and let arise the love between Ledger and Michelle Williams. From their love was born Matilda, 2 years ago, Heath wanted Jake to be her godfather, Jake said he was “incredibly honoured”. Now that little girl is the last trace of that friend who has meant so much to him.
New Mexico, December 2007
Brothers is a movie about the war in Afghanistan. They’re shooting a scene in jail, actors have to display their homesickness. Every prisoner has put a pic of his wife or girlfriend on the wall. Jake picks a pic from his wallet and adds it to the others. Curious, his colleagues come close to the wall, until they understand that it’s a joke: the pic was taken on the set of BBM, it’s him with Heath Ledger. Jake bursts into laughter.

Los Angeles, October 2007
“Ours has been a blind date. In the movie we had to play the part of two lovers, but we had never exchanged more than a couple of words, we had no idea if we would have been fine together. But BBM worked because we found that “feeling”. In the story, Jack and Ennis don’t know each other, and fall in love slowly and in the same way we have slowly liked each other. And have become friends. Friends indeed: I think you can see this in the movie”
Din don. Three months before Heath Ledger’s lonely death. Jake Gyllenhaal, who can’t imagine what will happen, is telling me how much he loves him. The interview has just started in the hotel suite, when the doorbell rings “Room service” a voice says. A hot cappuccino is brought into the room “Did you ask for it?” the actor asks me. “Of course not” I answer.

Gyllenhaal shrugs and let the waiter out of the room. He looks surprised. So do I. It doesn’t happen often that in a 5-star hotel like this a waiter knocks at the wrong door. Above all it doesn’t happen often that a waiter enters - by chance – in the hotel suite where one of the most appreciated actors of the moment is promoting his new movie – Rendition, out in theaters from February 28th [in Italy, ndr], it’s the story of a CIA agent who takes part in the research for justice of the American wife (Reese Witherspoon) of an Arabian man (Omar Merwally), under suspicion of terrorism, unexplainably disappeared and nastily tortured in the name of America, as ordered by a hard-shelled government officer (Meryl Streep).
As I was reaching the room, Reese Witherspoon stepped on the lift: beside starring in the movie, she’s been Jake’s girlfriend for some months. She’s wearing a black dress, pigtail, she’s petite. She’s really pale, later on she’ll tell she doesn’t feel good and will call off all the interviews.
Gyllenhaal is taller than what you expect. Sitting on the sofa, he keeps moving his long legs, as if he couldn’t find the right position. In a couple of minutes he’s passed from the suit worn for the press conference, to a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. He looks very young and in fact, despite his many movies, he is young. He’s 27, his debut in the cinema at 11 (family matter: his father’s director, his mother’s screenwriter, his sister’s famous actress Maggie Gyllenhaal), at the age of 20 he has his first lead role, in the hit movie Donnie Darko. But his golden year is 2005: the controversial love of two gay cowboys in Brokeback Mountain, the madness in Proof, the Gulf war in Jarhead.
[Page center] With Heath we had a blind date. Before Brokeback Mountain we didn’t know each other. Than we’ve become true friends

PAGE 80
SF: And now a post 9/11 theme. For being so young, you are quite active about politics. In 2004 you took part in democrat John Kerry’s campaign, you fight for civil rights and ecology. Haven’t you ever thought that lining up could harm you?
JG: I fight for the things I care about, that’s what my family taught to me. And then, an actor necessarely makes a political choice when he decides to play a role in a movie. Every movie is political: the audience is sitting there in the theater and you have the power to entertain them, but to influence their believes too.
SF: Because of your believes, someone has called you “the new Sean Penn” or “Clooney’s heir”. Do you like these expressions or do they annoy you?
JG: I do respect both Sean and George, I like their intellectual honesty, I appreciate the work they do. But I’d like to be considered for who I am, with my thoughts and my priorities: we all have our own.
SF: What do you think about the tortures used by American agencies in the name of national safety?
JG: My personal opinion is that torture is wrong. But I also think that people have the chance to say what they think when they go to the polls. If you vote for someone who has certain ideas, you’re also responsible for the consequences of his/her decisions. What we see in the world now is the result of Bush’s administration choices.
SF: Most of Rendition’s scenes have been shot in Marocco. How did it feel being an American in a Muslim country?
JG: People are amazing and the warm welcome we received made us forget about all the paranoia for safety that Americans usually have.
SF: Have you ever seriously considered to be a politician?
JG: Truth is that I’m more interested in acting. We live in an age where politicians play like actors, and actors play like politicians
SF: Have you always known you’d have done this job?
JG: Maybe I wasn’t sure I’d have done this job, but I’ve always loved the abstract idea of acting
SF: But you attended Columbia University to study Eastern philosophy and religions.
JG: Philosophy was the only subject I was interested in at high school, we had no theatre classes there. And today I’m happy of having followed those classes at Columbia: I think it made me grow up from an intellectual point of view

SF: And from a religious point of view?
JG: My mother is Jewish, my father is Christian: both cultures, rather than religions, have affected my education. About Buddhism I’m fascinated by the ability of getting out of the cage of rigid rules, opening your mind. My favourite teacher was Robert Thurman (father of actress Uma). He taught me that Buddhism is first of all a philosophy of life, then a confession of faith.
Din Don. Doorbell again. The actor looks at me quizzically before saying “yes?”. “Room service” says the voice on the other side of the door. We both answer “No thanks!”, but the waiter ignores us and he enters with another cappuccino on the tray. “It’s not possible” says Jake “What the hell is it going on here?!”. I have few minutes left, so I get back to the interview.

SF: In 2005 you starred in 3 successful movies. Don’t you ever feel the pressure of expectations? Are you never afraid of failing?
JG: I rather felt the pressure in the beginning, when I didn’t know who I was yet and what I would have done. Today I’m only happy of having so many opportunities. In my life, as in my career, I’m living an important moment. Why should I stop?

SF: Does Reese Witherspoon has anything to do with your important moment?
JG: Funny, isn’t it? Reese and I have known each other for a very long time, we’re friends, then we do this movie and everybody thinks we’re dating.
SF: Are you trying to make me believe that you are only friends?
JG: (He lifts his eyes, blushes before answering with a lie) “yes”.
SF: I’ll ask it differently. In this important moment of your career and your life, how much does love mean to you?
JG: Love is always fundamental and it lies to my heart much more than career. And I’m talking about love in general, not only the one for a woman
PAGE 82

SF: Would you like to have a family of your own?
JG: Sure it's one of my aims for the future.
A value that I put at the centre of my life: my parents are still together after thirty years.

SF: Brokeback Mountain was a movie about a love story too. Between two men actually.
At the time many people advised you to not accept a script that could damage your career. Two years from then we can say that the effects have been opposite.
JG: I think that Brokeback Mountain has been the most important experience in my career, it gave me a lot of chances. You know what's funny? No one asked me if I was afraid to play a CIA agent in a movie. I played a lot of controversial characters in my career but only when I was gonna play a gay man they warned me I was making a risky choice because the audience could have thought that I was gay for real.

SF: In fact there were rumours about your bisexuality. At the time you declared provokingly that you had never been attracted to a man sexually but you would not be afraid if that happened. Still you've just admitted that that there are a lot of prejudices in the movie business that are hard to beat.
JG: I understand if someone prefers not to talk about such a subject because he's afraid to be swallowed by the audience's curiousity but I grew up in a world where there were many gays and they had no reason to hide.
Fortunately the world is evolving and in my generation there's more acceptance towards homosexuality. And I hope that soon we can get over prejudices.

SF: Last year you dedicated a song to your Brokeback fans. You played it during your guest appearence at the SNL. The audience has been impressed by your glittering dress.
JG: And that it's been quite an improvisation. I worked on it just the day before the show would be broadcast.
I asked to sing so my press agent suggested the song (And I am telling you I'm not going from Dreamgirls ST ndr), someone else suggested to play it in drag and I said “Great!”. The dedication to Brokeback fans was part of the game.

SF: You do that often?
JG: Singing? Yes! Dressing in drag a little less.

SF: Talking about TV appearences, is it true that you appeared in a show about Italian food?
JG: Yes! With all my family. I love good food and my favourite is Italian food.

Another ring at the door.
We both thought that that was his press agent to announce that my time was over. We were already saying goodbye to each other when another waiter, in silence this time, put the third steaming cappuccino upon the table. Jake and I looked at each other trying not to laugh. “You're Italian, right?” he asked me “Consider this crazy situation as an homage, something that we Americans have set to make you feel at home”.

SF: I pointed out that the next interviewer was German .
JG: We'll bring beer.” he laughed “The waiter has been warned yet”.

SF: I read somewhere that your parents, when you was a kid, let you go to auditions but not to accept the part in case you took it. Don't you think that this is a little bit cruel as an educational method?
JG: No, that was love. Having a son asking you to become an actor is just like having him asking you to let him go to a party where everybody get drunk and take drugs. They knew what it all was about and wanted to protect me.

SF: But you get to success at a very young age as well.
JG: And I've been lucky. Reaching success at an early age can be dangerous.
I've been with actors all my life, and I've seen many of them having success and get to a bad end.
But I'm lucky because I have a family that helped me not to stumble.
The only people who can help you are those who stay by your side in hard times, those who really love you, not stopping at saying so.
But sometimes neither this is enough. To Heath Ledger this wasn’t enough.

Gyllenhaal: We knew each other before we filmed this movie. We had both been on an extensive, really intense, audition process for Moulin Rouge with Baz Luhrmann. There was me and Heath and Ewan [McGregor] as the last three for that role. I feel like I was the puppy of all the three of them. I don't know what I was doing in there, but I was just amazed to be in there when we were auditioning. Heath and I started to know each other just by name, because I never saw his face—Baz never let us see each other. We'd be ushered into a room and locked in, and the other would go out and audition with someone and then ushered back in, so I heard him by name for a long time. When we were both not cast we become friends out of jealousy. From there we knew each other on and off, different times we'd see each other.

When this came up, to tell you the truth, I questioned. I was like, “I wonder if Heath can pull this off. This is very, very intense. It's the most critical role in this film, to really push [the audience] through to the end and show that this relationship is really something meaningful.” I thought, could he? And then we started to work together and I was just like, “Yeah.”

We talked a lot. Heath would say stuff to me like, “I really think this character is very sensitive to light, and I think he's very sensitive to sound and he doesn't really like being around any place that's too noisy.” Then when it came to doing love scenes and stuff like that, the best metaphor I can give is that we were both like, “Are you ready?” “Yeah, let's go.” And we dove off the boat into the deep end. It's like when you're terrified of the water. You see a little kid thrown in the water, and they're trying to get back to the boat as fast as they can. That's what it was like, but at the same time we really went for it. We knew we had to consummate this somehow. It couldn't just be a story about friendship, because there's a part of two people connecting intimately, sexually, that drives that intimacy through the years. In my opinion when you see the movie, as soon as that happens, you're like, “Okay, I'm here now. I'm ready to see what's going to happen.” Or, “I'm out of here, I'll see you later.” Either way it does knock you into something. We knew that it was going to have to do that, and we were going to have to commit to it, and there was a high five, and jump in. It was just—I don't really remember it very well.

Jake Gyllenhaal crowned 'Prince of Persia'

Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton will star in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game. Mike Newell is directing.

In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the many games created by Jordan Mechner.

Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are exec producing.

Production is set to start in July.

Gyllenhaal will next appear in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" with Tobey Maguire. He is repped by CAA and Management 360.

British actress Arterton is relatively new on the film scene but is already generating heat for her work in Guy Ritchie's upcoming "RocknRolla" and the new James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace." She is repped by Independent Talent Group.

Jake Gyllenhaal And Gemma Arterton Cast In Prince of Persia!

The Hollywood Reporter have just confirmed Latino Reviews scoop that Jake Gyllenhaal will play the lead role in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. They also report that upcoming Bond girl and full time eye candy Gemma Arterton has been rewarded the lead female role.

Gyllenhaal will play the Prince of Persia himself, Prince Dastan, who joins forces with feisty and exotic princess Tamina, played by Arterton. Together they have to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Gyllenhaal doesn’t look identical to Prince Dastan, but I think he will be great in the role. If Disney are going to put $170+ million behind a film, with hope of a trilogy, you need a name in there. Plus Gyllenhaal hasn’t had a franchise yet, so now is his time.

Gemma Arterton’s career has sky-rocketed over the past few months. This time last year nobody knew who she was, and to date she has only completed two films, with a couple more on the way, one of which is Quantum of Solace. Landing the role of a Bond girl no doubt caused Jerry Bruckheimer to sit up and take notice, and he has now got the latest ‘hot talent’ in his next big franchise after Pirates of the Caribbean.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will being production in July!

One more time - A-list is not about what you or I think, it's about how Hollywood works:

The A-list is a term that alludes to major movie stars, and/or the most bankable in the Hollywood movie industry. Often these top actors in the industry are able to earn US$20 million per movie. ... The list was created by veteran entertainment journalist James Ulmer, who developed a 100-point method to quantify a star's value to a film production, in terms of getting a movie financed and the cameras rolling. ...

Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise topped the latest ranking in 2006. Ulmer's latest Top Ten List, from 2006, also includes:
Jim Carrey
George Clooney
Russell Crowe
Johnny Depp
Nicole Kidman

A lot of people questioned whether Heath can play the Joker too.
It's funny that Heath always seemed to have to prove he is able to play a character.
I follwed his career and he gave many good performances, but he also starred in some mediocre or bad movies, maybe that's why he was always so underrated?

Good money and maybe / probably better chances to get really good roles?

Add to that he'll become a lot more famous!

Reese Witherspoon Bikini Pictures

Here are some bikini pictures of Reese Witherspoon out in Miami with Jake Gyllenhaal. You’d think that Reese would keep herself in better shape, considering Jake is. Not that I’m paying attention to men’s physiques, it’s just an obvious observation. Anyway, I know Reese had some kids and a women’s body begins to go south afterwards but if I was gay actor, I would definitely not be banging Reese Witherspoon. That’s just my personal opinion.

My aunt, who is not a rich celeb, had three kids and she looks like she never gave birth. She did take care not to get fat though. She worked out and watched what she ate. You don't have to look like Miss Witherspoon after giving birth!

Anonymous said...

There is no real reason for her to get in shape - no one would cast her for her looks.

Anonymous said...

After seeing those bikini pics, I'm convinced Reese has an ego the size of California along with her type A personality. For a woman who makes so much money, has herself photographed in workout gear or running and arranges pap photo ops of her and her fake lover, she looked in the mirror and thought she looked young and sexy in that suit? Jake's body is smoking and standing next to him it makes her look worse. Now that Jake's got his big money making role, hopefully he'll finally get out of this fake romance.

"The Prince of Persia storyline will revolve around Dastan (naturally) and a princess (Tamina, I assume) — who is a enemy of his kingdom — teaming up to stop an evil ruler from setting off a devastating and deadly sandstorm. In doing this, they are tricked into unleashing the Sands of Time, which destroys an entire kingdom and turns its people into demons. To fix this mistake, and ensure it doesn’t happen again, Dastan and Tamina must get the Sands of Time back into the hourglass from which they came."

"Hot Hollywood couple REESE WITHERSPOON and JAKE GYLLENHAAL were always destined to be together - they were lovers in a previous life.
Top Tinseltown psychic Kenny Kingston's spiritual guides have told him the actors were an item when they were both medics in World War One.
Kingston says, "He was a doctor, she was a nurse. They worked closely together and were also romantically involved.
"But too soon, he was called to more active duty and they were separated. So, in this life. they must complete their relationship, both romantically and in some capacity, to work together.
"This (new relationship) will allow the relationship that started during World War One to fully blossom."

I for one don't care if he and Reese are dating or faking!
He tainted everything for me because he kept quiet about Heath. I think it had to do with the drug rumors about Heath too. Jake got too Hollywood for my taste.
I was a fan of Jake and Heath, but liked Jake more as a person because he seemed so easy going and refreshingly different than the rest of Hollywood. Heath came off as introverted and a bit arrogant, which probably just seemed arrogance and instead was shyness, what I've realized now.
Now I more and more feel that maybe Heath was the more "real" of the two.
I honestly would have been more than thrilled for Jake for his professional success, but his behaviour tainted him for me forever!

According to Ted TMZ has something on Jake. The same TMZ that hounded Mel Gibson and Britney Spears. Why would they protect Jake?

Anonymous said...

I remember last year they hinted that even though Jake was "seeing" Reese, he was spending every available minute of his time with "BFF" Austin. And they weren't subtle about what they were suggesting.

Plus, TMZ was the outlet that outed Jake when he made that JFC set visit to Austin and spent the entire time in Austin's trailer.

Anonymous said...

10:14 PM...I agree.

Nice, easygoing Jake was always easy to love, irresistible as a puppy. Heath was more of a challenge - a complex personality and more powerful actor, but not cuddly. Yet I used to see them as close to the same level for their different strengths. Now it's like Ben Affleck vs Sean Penn. Despite Heath's flaws, he was never a phony and I respect him for that. Jake, as you said, tainted himself, and not just by keeping silent about Heath, or staging photos with Reese. It was his cat-and-mouse game over his sexuality that marked him as dishonest. (Don't kid yourself, Jake fans - he is acutely aware of his image and he played the ambiguity card with a smile until things got too hot and he had to dial it down for career reasons.)

Still, I sort of understand his actions...he's only human.

From OMG:

Several points about PoP -

1) PoP is not a family oriented game, it's rated T(teen), unlike that other Disney blockbuster POTC which is rated E(verbody). Basically, PG-13. And it doesn't have CS Lewis' thinly veiled analogies to pull in the fundie crowds.

2) This movie will either be aimed at gamers for the name recognition, keeping it close to the its origins, or gutted to appeal to non-gamers, thus turning off the ones that could give it that important word of mouth advertizing.

3)The gaming world is truly a global community thanks to FPS, RPG, MMORPG and platformers (like PoP). And gamers come in all shapes, sizes, geographic locations, genders, ages and, yes, sexual orientations, and everyone cyberally co-exists happily. No one really cares what/who you're zooming as long as you don't f**k up while taking down the enemy.

4) The most sought after demographic, males 15-35, are from a much more tolerant generation, many of whom believe in gay rights and can call several GLBT people as close friends. Also, this is same demographic that has embraced, on both sides of the pond, "Torchwood", a sci-fi show with an out gay man as the leading man whose character on the show is involved in a same-sex relationship.

5) The most sought after demographic has changed, and not only are females avid gamers, with coveted dollars to spend, fangirls are internet and LJ savvy. Fangirls that are also into HP, LOTR and any other fandom out there that thrives on slash.

6) The people Reeke was concocted for are not movie ticket buyers, only movie gossip magazine buyers.

7) No guarentee WHATSOEVER that this one movie will automatically translate into a franchise, thus granting Jake years of work and fame. The cineplex parking lot is littered with movies that died an ignominious death by an audience's cold shoulder.

If Jake has put all of his career eggs in a Reeke basket for this movie, his wake-up call won't be pretty.

Anonymous said...

Great post 2:51. ITA agree and this "It was his cat-and-mouse game over his sexuality that marked him as dishonest" is exactly what has bothered me most. He was willingly playing along until things went too far and too many stories about him coming out started circulating.

Anonymous said...

PoP is going to be horrible. I have no hope for it at all. Jake is trying to be Jonny Depp, but he is no Depp. He is not even in his ballpark. Funnily enough, Depp did Donnie Brasco with Mike Newell, one of Newell's very few decent films.

I think it shows the difference in how Maggie and Jake's talents are percieved when Maggie gets a role in the A list batman franchise and Jake gets the beefcake bruckenheimer franchise.

‘Prince of Persia’ Casting Announced

It’s not Orlando Bloom, but is it any better? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Donnie Darko himself Jake Gyllenhaal will be swashbuckling to save his princess of the hour, upcoming Bond girl Gemma Arterton. Here’s a recap of what to expect:

In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in 6th century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

This is a HUGE opportunity for Mr. Gyllenhaal to embrace something less brooding and more swashbuckling. This is not one of those understated, deep-in-thought roles, Jake, so if you’re not going in like Flynn, please turn in you sword… otherwise, step up and show the world why Orlando Bloom would have been the worse choice (and enjoy the premium paycheck).

Sigourney Weaver to star as the mother of a gay son in "Prayers for Bobby"

Three time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver is set to co-produce and star in the Lifetime TV movie Prayers for Bobby, about a woman whose gay son commits suicide. It's based on a 1996 book by Leroy Aarons about Mary Griffith, whose life was forever changed when her son took his own life. From the publisher's comments:

Bobby Griffith was an all-American boy ... and he was gay. Faced with an irresolvable conflict -for both his family and his religion taught him that being gay was "wrong"- Bobby chose to take his own life. Prayers for Bobby, nominated for a 1996 Lambda Literary Award, is the story of the emotional journey that led Bobby to this tragic conclusion. But it is also the story of Bobby's mother, a fearful churchgoer who first prayed that her son would be "healed," then anguished over his suicide, and ultimately transformed herself into a national crusader for gay and lesbian youth. As told through Bobby's poignant journal entries and his mother's reminiscences, Prayers for Bobby is at once a moving personal story, a true profile in courage, and a call to arms to parents everywhere.

I hope it'll be a decent guy. But the cynic in me thinks Michelle will have a lot of guys in her life and Matilda lots of stepfathers. Before Heath she changed her bf's quite often. After the split she supposedly had something going on with a director later with Ryan Gosling. She supposedly put the thing with Gosling on hold when Heath died. Ryan was recently seen making out with Kiki Dunst, I think she's a co-star in one of his next movies.
Best thing would be if Matilda's real daddy was still alive. :(

"In the court documents obtained by Access Hollywood, Denise claims the couple’s recent engagement is all a publicity stunt, alleging Charlie and Brooke told her they “did it for the press … he wanted to get the cover of People and Us magazine.” So this type of stuff does go on in HW.

Psychic Has A Fantasy About Jake G.

Hollywood psychic Kenny Kingston has claimed that Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal were destined to fall in love. Well I'm destined to fall in love with a supermodel if I can come up with enough cash. Hell, we're all destined if we can do that.

Kenny, who I think is still pissed off because he missed out on the whole dial a psychic and waste your money 900# scam says that Reese and Jake first met in a past life. Oh yes, it's true. She was a nurse and Jake was a doctor during World War One. In between treating patients, they fell in love.

At some point Jake was called up to a more active role in the war to help out all the guys in the trenches. I guess Jake was there to make sure that all the guys were really given some one on one medical services. Really get at the root of whatever problems they might be having and to be there to inject them with what they needed. As a result of Jake's active duty, the lovers had their destiny interrupted.

Kenny says that now they have a chance to correct destiny and to be together as lovers and to work together again as well. Oh, they're working together all right. I think all this is just some kind of fantasy Kenny uses in his mind to be able to fall asleep each night, but my commentary is probably a little more PG than the R fantasy Kenny has.

I think I expected too much, but Jake's words after winning his Bafta that it was an amazing honor that Heath chose him as the Godfather and that he loves Michelle and Matilda, lead me to believe he'd be more involved after what happened. Now I'm not sure if he's involved at all.
This proves that words mostly don't mean anything!

Jake is very, very lucky right now. PoP arrived just in the nick of time. I don't see any other films coming down the road, largely because his personal life and professional reputation are in chaos. He bet the farm on PoP. He certainly didn't get this film because he won awards for Zodiac or Rendition, or because Nailed or Brothers will make lots of money. Something else is going on, and we all know what it is.

PoP irrefutably proves, once and for all, that JAKE IS BEARDING. And no amount of spin from press agents, unnamed industry sources, rabid fan-girls or fawning gossip columnists can change that fact.

Persian Herb Pie from Using Up Herbs :

"Tonight I prepared a recipe called Persian Herb Pie from Viana La Place’s exquisite and indispensable book The Unplugged Kitchen. The recipe calls for one cup each (about one bunch each) minced parsley and cilantro, and a half cup each “slivered” lettuce and snipped chives. You beat six eggs, and mix in the minced herbs, two minced garlic cloves, and salt and pepper. Pour the eggs into a hot skillet or baking pan with some olive oil and bake in a moderate oven for about twenty minutes or until set.

This time, I made the Persian Herb Pie with all my remaining herbs from the week, which added up to ½ cup each dill and parsley, one cup cilantro, 3 garlic cloves, and no lettuce or chives. It’s a forgiving recipe as long as the egg-to-herb ratio is about right and the herbs include at least some parsley. This pie is deeply satisfying and vividly herbal."

I would recommend throwing half rotten tomatoes instead ;)

Jodie Foster Affair with Cindy Mort Destroyed Cydney Bernard Relationship

Cindy Mort is being accused as the woman that caused the break-up between long-time lovers Jodie Foster and Cydney Bernard, according to the National Enquirer on Tuesday.

According to the Hollywood gossip magazine, Foster had an affair with Cynthia Mort, a producer and screenwriter, whom Jodie met on the set of The Brave One two years ago. The affair between Foster and Mort continued since then and eventually caused the rift in Foster’s relationship with Bernard.

“Although she and Cydney remain under the same roof at the moment, the relationship has been shattered,” a source told the Enquirer. “They’ll continue to raise the boys together and try to keep a loving family unit despite their breakup. The love is gone.”

So sad.

Ask the AfterElton Flying Monkey!

Q: My best friend and I have been searching through the gay movies section at Blockbuster lately, and we've definitely found our share of good: Latter Days, The Broken Hearts Club, and Boy Culture. However, we've also seen some real shit (about 80%). Anyway could you suggest maybe top 20 gay movies of all time? –Zach, Vancouver, BC, Canada

A: Ah, yes, crappy gay cinema! It’s the bane of every gay moviegoer. We’re so desperate for cinematic representations of ourselves that we end up getting snookered into seeing movies that would never have seen the darkness of an actual movie theater if there weren’t so many gay moviegoers desperate for cinematic representations of themselves. But after being burned again and again, many gay people decide, “Screw this! I’ll take a decent movie about straight people over another grainy, poorly-acted, crappily-written indie gay film any time.”

Fortunately, there are some good gay movies out there amid all the dreck. (But keep in mind that taste in movies is very subjective. Case in point: I didn’t like Boy Culture (2006) much — “Jerk Culture” is more like it — and I was pretty disappointed in The Broken Hearts Club (2000) too, which had a great cast, but a disappointing, sitcom-y script. But I completely agree with you about Latter Days! [2003])

I’ve seen every gay movie ever made (literally!). Here’s my list of my all-time favorites, in order of preference:

Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Trick (1999)
The Wedding Banquet (1993)
The Opposite of Sex (1998)
Gods & Monsters (1998)
Far From Heaven (2002)
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1994)
Latter Days (2003)
Maurice (1987)
East Side Story (2006)
The Hours (2002)
The Object of My Affection (1998)
Victor/Victoria (1982)
Making Love (1982)
Kinsey (2004)
Mambo Italiano (2003)
Beautiful Thing (1996)
Get Real (1998)
Longtime Companion (1990)
Mysterious Skin (2004)
Big Eden (2000)
Shelter (2007)
Wild Reeds (1994)
Eating Out (2004)
HellBent (2004).

I saw a movie last week, The Bubble (2006), which was absolutely great…until the ending, which wasn’t just utterly depressing, but made absolutely no sense, character-wise. So I can’t recommend it. I’m sure others will chime in with more movie suggestions in the comments!

Gyllenhaal is Prince of Persia

If you’re a dashing young Persian actor struggling to get a break in Hollywood, you might think that a movie called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time could be it. Then you find out that the white guy from Brokeback Mountain got the job. According to Daily Variety, Disney has confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast in the title role of Jerry Bruchheimer’s adaptation of the hit video game from Ubisoft. The actor will be joined on screen by Gemma Arterton, the next Bond girl in Quantum of Solace, coming out in November.

Gyllenhaal takes on the role of Dastan, a prince in sixth-century Persia who teams up with a feisty, exotic princess to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world. Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is directing from a screenplay by Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard, Boaz Yakin and game creator Jordan Mechner. Shooting is scheduled to begin in July in Morocco and London for a Summer 2009 release.

Inspired by The Book of One Thousand and One Nights, Mechner teamed with developer Brøderbund to launch the first Prince of Persia Game for PCs and early consoles in 1989. Ubisoft decided to bring the franchise to PlayStation 2, Xbox and Gamecube in 2003 with Sands of Time, which has spawned six sequels.

Prior to taking his turn with the Harry Potter franchise, Newell directed a lot of British and U.S. TV before helming such popular films as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Donnie Brasco. His latest film, an adaptation of the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel Love in the Time of Cholera, opened to mixed reviews in November.

Blind Item

I've written about this couple before, but for such a young age they have certainly caught on to how the game is played. Married. She is an extremely popular singer and he is a nobody. He goes both ways, and she doesn't really care. She loves him, and doesn't want to give up so she lets him be. This is their latest trick. When they attend a party, they walk the red carpet and kiss and make nicey nice for the cameras. If a tabloid runs their picture, there they are. The happy couple. What they don't see is the husband taking off five minutes later to go meet his boyfriend. If someone asks about her husband inside the event, our singer just says that he is around somewhere.

Speed Racer's Box Office Flop Explained

The final numbers aren’t in yet, but it doesn’t matter. Speed Racer is officially a tremendous flop. Early estimates indicate that it only made $20 million opening weekend, and even that as it turns out, may be generous. By way of comparison, Iron Man made $100 million its opening weekend, and $50 million this weekend. Those are the kinds of numbers you expect from a summer blockbuster people actually want to see.
...
Speed Racer is first and foremost a kids’ movie. That should have worked for it. It’s been months since we’ve had an even halfway exciting kids’ movie, and usually when that happens the next one to show up in theaters makes a mint. Speed Racer had the jump on all the other summer children’s films. It was the first. It should have been sold out with Mom’s dragging hordes of pre-teens in to see the Wachowski brothers’ brightly colored racing movie. Except whoops. They forgot to tell parents that this was a kids’ movie.

Sure the trailers had a lot of bright colors and vroom vroom noises, but it was never entirely clear that this was a movie for kids. Most of the ads touted that it was the latest from the creators of The Matrix, a series of films known for being R-rated and violent. Others were attached to corporate sponsorships for boring, adult things like insurance. Few of the most heavily used advertisements were clearly geared towards youngsters. Instead, nearly all of the trailers and TV spots seemed to be struggling to strike a confused middle ground, in a weird attempt to appeal to everyone, while all they really accomplished was to appeal to absolutely no one.
...
Speed Racer blew it in marketing. They needed to sell this thing solely to pre-teens, and they didn’t. The result was a movie which adults had no interest in and parents were never quite sure was meant for their kids. Welcome to flop city Speed Racer. You had it coming.

There are no guarantees in the movie business: Jake's career could be better, worse or the same after PoP. But this is his big chance to make box office successful movie(s).

Sounds like you should follow your own advice, Anon. 1:11. And his awards for his films speak otherwise. I'd take that opinion over a nameless nobody on a blog anyday, whose only motivation is to put someone down because they don't like the way the star's personal life has turned out.

Love the trailer!

Two things I've noticed about Prince: he has a soft voice and a silly hairdo.

That's not the cinematic trailer. It's a commercial for the game.

If there's anything we can learn from blind items, it's that everyone who is marginally famous either has some bizarre sexual proclivity, is on drugs, or is a gay. And sometimes a combination of two or more of those things. I'm not sure if this happens after they get famous or if they're in the entertainment industry because they're already weird, but the whole scene makes me happy I don't live in LA. Not that LA isn't a great city with great people and great... You know. ...

"Which gay married actor is actually conducting an open relationship and has made no secret of his penchant for very young men?" [Mirror]

One of the comments: "Hugh Jackman. I know people who worked on The Boy From Oz."

I'm going to take a wild guess that he's definitely NOT involved at all.

But that is very weird! So often he said in interviews how close he was to his Godparents and how great he thought that was. I've seen pictures of him and his Godmother Jamie Lee Curtis out and about, sightings of them when they went to dinner.

I'd understand if he only called or saw Matilda every once in a while, while both her parents were alive, but her father is dead now as we all know. I heard the Godmother is very involved in her life though.
He even went on vacation in Mexico with Reese and the kids and I think Michelle and Matilda were in N.Y. at the same time. He could have spend a little time with the girl then.
I don't get him! I'm sorry, but that's very weird to me.

Documentary Alert: Bi Bi My Darling!

I may have mentioned this before, but I'm in a movie about bisexuality! (I guess those who can't, teach.) In the film, I say that there are some people out there who are truly, sincerely bi, but all those closet gays pathetically claiming they go both ways absolutely ruin it for them. I might have to forgive them since I can remember a time--back in college, actually--when EVERYONE who later turned out to be raging queen was insisting they were bi. Well, YOU, my dears, should go just one way—straight to the theater on June 6 when the movie, Bi The Way, plays NewFest. Here's what you and your date (whether male or female) have in store if you buy tickets and some bisexual popcorn. ...

Screening: FRIDAY, JUNE 6th at 5:45 pm in the NEWFEST Film Festival - Loews 34th St Theater (at 8th Ave), New York City

ENGAGING THOUGHTS: I'm hearing that Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal may get engaged before he heads off to Morocco this summer to star in what everyone thinks will be the next big movie franchise: ''The Prince of Persia.'' Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are producing the huge action-adventure project (based on the video game) that's being touted as a possible successor to the ''Pirates of the Caribbean'' flicks.

Engagement?

Don't think the Blind Item is about Jake, cause I think that Austin was a fling and his main man is Chris. Could be that when Chris gave up his job in NYC to move to LA and apparently become Jake's assistant is when they made a serious commitment to each other. The whole phonyspoon started a little while after that and Chris even travels with them (he's in one of the pics from the NYC lovefest).

Jake Gyllenhaal Is Good With the Scimitar

Gyllenhaal Apparently Persian: Jake Gyllenhaal gets untraditionally cast as the hero of Jerry Bruckheimer's Prince of Persia, based on the franchise video game. (It turns out there are no actors of Middle Eastern descent anywhere in the world!) Bruckheimer also has high hopes for Gyllenhaal's co-star, Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace), as many of his leading ladies "have gone on to become major movie stars, going back to Nicole Kidman in … Days of Thunder." Or, like Top Gun's Kelly McGillis, Arterton can look forward to doing voices in Disney Channel's Buzz Lightyear cartoon.

SUPPLANT
1: to supersede (another) especially by force or treachery
2: to eradicate and supply a substitute for; to take the place of and serve as a substitute for.

I think you mean firmly plant him on the A-list, unless you were thinking that if Jake moves up, that will kick someone else off. The A-list has no quota, but I suppose Jake could supplant Tommy Cruise easily enough. ;)

Michelle Williams Dazzles at Cannes Film Festival

Michelle Williams made a dramatic, last-minute appearance at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, walking her first red carpet since Heath Ledger's death to promote her film Wendy and Lucy.

"It was decided on Monday night that she could come to Cannes, and she got on the next plane to arrive just in time to get dressed and come to our premiere," said a rep for Wendy and Lucy. "She came in and had a long nap and then came to the screening." Williams, 27, was radiant in a vintage Chanel Haute Couture dress. She will remain in Cannes at least through Friday night to promote another festival movie in which she appears, Synecdoche, New York, before flying back to the United States to resume filming a Martin Scorsese movie in Boston.

Williams has kept a low profile since Ledger died last January at age 28 of an accidental overdose. After attending his memorial service in Australia, she has spent time with their 2-year-old daughter Matilda in New York and on the set of her new film.

At Cannes, Williams's work in Wendy and Lucy was well-received, the rep says. "Some people said tonight it was a transcendent performance," he says. "It's about things going on around her and she's just she's trying to go forward and things are not working out for her. You see her taking care of herself first [in the film], which is exactly what we must do."

Nailed extra about Nailed cast:

"I'm not bitter So last month I was an extra in the film "Nailed" and a few days ago the movie got cancelled! It had Jessica Biel (a snob if there ever was one....I'm thinking about starting whatever the opposite of a fan club is, for her), Jake Gyllenhaal (who was actually pretty nice, even if he did flirt with all the college aged girls...pssst! Don't tell Reese Witherspoon). Catherine Keener (who was also very nice but she has like a 12 inch waist!), Tracey Morgan (he wore sunglasses inside the building, listened to his music and didn't pay much attention on set). Paul Rubens (Pee Wee Herman for those of you who don't keep up on such things) I liked Mr Rubens, thought he was a funny down to earth guy...not a snob like some people (think first actor I mentioned). Anyway, the update on IMDB for the movie makes it seem like the production will still go on but I'm waiting for my check for the 4 days I worked! I was told it will be 4 to 6 weeks! So on my only 2 days off in 4 weeks I had to work the whole weekend to make up for the check they never sent....oh but don't worry about Big A, NO, I'll be just fine!!!!"
