Jake Gyllenhaal, Ansel Elgort and Zendaya have joined the new crime thriller “Finest Kind,” written and directed by Brian Helgeland.
The pic will be produced by Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff under Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment, Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas, and Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker under their Nine Stories banner. 30WEST is financing the film.
STXinternational, a division of STX Entertainment, will handle international distribution for the film and introduce to buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin. STXinternational will also directly distribute the film in the U.K. and Ireland.
“Finest Kind” is a crime thriller about two brothers (Gyllenhaal and Elgort) who strike a dangerous deal with a crime syndicate that draws them into the Boston underworld. As pressures mount, sacrifices must be made and bonds — between brother and brother and between father and sons — put to the test.
Helgeland won the screenwriting Oscar for “L.A. Confidential” and was nominated for “Mystic River.” His most recent films as director were “Legend” and “42.”
Elgort was nominated for a Golden Globe for “Baby Driver,” and will star in “The Goldfinch.” Gyllenhaal recently starred in “Stronger,” while Zendaya appeared in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “The Greatest Showman.”

An A-list trio has been assembled for a hot new package, Finest Kind.
Jake Gyllenhaal, Ansel Elgort and Zendaya will star in the crime drama from Brian Helgeland, the Oscar-winning writer-director behind Mystic River, L.A. Confidential and A Knight's Tale.
Producing are Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment, and Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas of Imperative Entertainment. Gyllenhaal and his Nine Stories partner Riva Marker are also producing. 30WEST is financing the film. The story centers on two half-brothers, to be played by Gyllenhaal and Elgort, that are reunited as adults after being raised by different fathers. When one discovers his estranged father has only months to live, he strikes a dangerous deal with a crime syndicate, putting him and his brother on a collision course with the Boston underworld.
Gyllenhaal, who is no stranger to the crime drama genre as the star of Night Crawler and Nocturnal Animals, will next be seen in the Annapurna Western The Sisters Brothers. He is repped by WME and Bloom Hergott.
Zendaya is currently in theaters with awards contender and sleeper hit The Greatest Showman, and is set for the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. She is repped by CAA, Monster Talent and Skrzyniarz & Mallean. Next up for Baby Driver star and onscreen terminally ill teen, Elgort, is Warner Bros.' The Goldfinch adaptation, in which he leads a cast that includes Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson. He is repped by CAA, Brookside and Morris Yorn.
Helgeland won an Oscar for writing L.A. Confidential and directed the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which starred Chadwick Boseman, and Legend, a crime drama that starred Tom Hardy. He is repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman.

“Wildlife” was adapted for the screen by Dano and Zoe Kazan from Richard Ford’s acclaimed novel. The film was produced by Alex Saks of June Pictures, Dano, Oren Moverman of Sight Unseen Pictures, Ann Ruark and Nine Stories’ Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker, with Zoe Kazan, Ted Deiker and Eddie Vaisman serving as executive producers.
IFC Films is planning a fall theatrical release and a 2018 awards campaign for the film that had its premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival last month. The movie tells the story of a boy who watches his parents’ marriage crumble after his mother falls in love with another man.
“For as long as I have wanted to make films, I have known I would make films about family,” said Dano in a statement. “To have brought together a creative family in the making of ‘Wildlife’ has been one of the great joys of my life. And now to extend that family further and collaborate with IFC, whose voice as a distributor has been vital to so many filmmakers I love all over the world, is an honor.”
Jonathan Sehring and Lisa Schwartz, co-presidents of IFC Films, added, “We have long admired Paul Dano’s remarkable career as an actor, having had the privilege of working with him on ‘The Ballad of Jack and Rose.’ We are thrilled to present his directorial debut as it is so deft and self assured. It is almost unfathomable to think that this is his first film behind the camera as the result is nothing short of remarkable. From the amazing performances he was able to capture from Carey Mulligan, Ed Oxenbould, Bill Camp, and Jake Gyllenhaal to Paul and Zoe’s moving and nuanced screenplay, ‘Wildlife’ is a stunning debut film that will leave an indelible effect on audiences.”
The deal was handled by Arianna Bocco, executive vice president of acquisitions and production, for IFC Films with Endeavor Content on behalf of the filmmakers. Film Nation is handling international sales for the film.

Is STRONGER getting an Australian release at any point? I caught it on a plane, and though it's not quite the crowd-pleasing Oscar bait the trailer suggested, it has solid performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany, and it'd be a shame to not share that.

People are ignorant and stupid and you can't change that. For example, there are tons of publicity whores who use paparazzi to get publicity (and make money from publicity), but fans still refuse to recognize that fact and insist that paparazzi are always bad guys.

Did not realize ENEMY was directed by Villeneuve! It is a much leaner version of Saramago’s The Double with a weirder ending, a few more mysteries, & much more ambiguity than the novel. Gyllenhaal plays the two roles very distinctly & Laurent & Gadon are wonderful against him. 4*

Talk about a star-studded stateside welcome. For its first-ever U.S. event, Letters Live — a literary program launched in the U.K. which enlists A-list talent to read and perform correspondence from iconic historical figures — has recruited the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Anjelica Huston, James Corden and Minnie Driver to star in its upcoming show in Los Angeles in partnership with Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter.
The best part — the show is open to the public, and tickets ($50-$200) can be purchased online now. Net proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to women's charities 826LA, an organization dedicated to supporting students with creative and expository writing skills, and Women for Women International, a charity which supports women survivors of war living in some of the world’s most dangerous places to rebuild their lives and inspire hope for the future.
Taking place at the Theatre at Ace Hotel on Feb. 26, the Letters Live program will also feature actors Stephen Fry, Catherine Keener, Mark Hamill, Jarvis Cocker, Shirley Manson, Ian McShane and Annabelle Wallis performing dramatic reenactments letters from a range of historical periods.
“We’re very excited about our first public performance of Letters Live in Los Angeles and are delighted to be presenting it in partnership with Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter," said Letters Live founder Jamie Byng. "Letters Live is a unique entertainment experience, one which combines great talent, remarkable letters and awareness for important local and global charity work, all culminating in unforgettable evenings that celebrate the humble letter and its immense power."
Past performers have included Tom Hiddleston, Jude Law, Sally Hawkins and other It-Brits, who read letters written by notables you may have heard of like David Bowie and Mohandas Gandhi. From Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin to Charlotte Bronte and Abraham Lincoln, the diverse authors make for a surely entertaining evening.
The 90th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 4, 2018.

The day was spent exploring Jerusalem’s old and new city. We explored the Jewish and Christian sites as well as the Muslim quarter. Spent time on Mt Zion, joined a Bar Mitzvah celebration, walked the rooftops of the old city and were mobbed by fans everywhere we went. Greg Grunberg discovered the amazing regulach in Jerusalems bakeries. Heaven on earth!

Writer-director Sara Colangelo won the directing award at this year's Sundance Film Festival for the movie. Netflix has picked up the U.S. and Canada rights to the Sundance Film Festival award-winning drama The Kindergarten Teacher, with plans on releasing the movie later this year.
The movie, which received raves for star Maggie Gyllenhaal, saw writer-director Sara Colangelo take home Sundance's directing award in the dramatic film category. It was also nominated for the festival's grand jury prize.
Gyllenhaal plays a Staten Island kindergarten teacher who, when she discovers what may be a gifted 5-year-old in her class, becomes obsessed with the child, spiraling downward on a dangerous and desperate path in order to nurture his talent.
The movie is a remake of the acclaimed Israeli film by the same name, written and directed by Nadav Lapid. Parker Sevak, Rosa Salazar, Anna Baryshnikov, Michael Chernus and Gael GarcIa Bernal round out the cast. The film was financed and co-produced by Pia Pressure, Farcaster Films, Imagination Park Entertainment, Manhattan Productions and PaperChase Films.
Gyllenhaal acted as a producer on Teacher along with Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren of Pie Films, and Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray of Maven Pictures.
