Jake Gyllenhaal loves being in Austin for SXSW.
The actor jetted to the Texas city this weekend to promote his new drama Demolition. He was also on hand a few years ago to do the same for Source Code and says he has a number of friends who live in Austin.
"I think there's a spirit, a sense of the type of film that I love to make that comes here, that would like to be here," Gyllenhaal told me last night at the red carpet screening of Demolition at the Paramount Theatre. "It has a commercial sensibility but also has a sense of oddity to it that always keeps somebody guessing. I think that mix is the type of movie that I like to make. That's why I like to be here."
Plus, he added, "I feel it's just enough rowdy for me but civilized enough that it doesn't get out of control."
And speaking of rowdy, Gyllenhaal revealed he and his Demolition co-star Naomi Watts threw a party for their cast and crew at Miss Lily's, a Jamaican restaurant in New York City, while they were still shooting.
"[The party] was really fun and we all danced," he remembered. "It got pretty rowdy, I have to say."
Gyllenhaal explained that director Jean-Marc Vallée has weekly parties while filming a movie hosted by different departments (Gyllenhaal and Watts were considered part of the "acting department"). "People drink," he said, adding that most of the get togethers happen on Fridays so there's less worry about having to be at work the next day.
In Demolition, Gyllenhaal plays a man who forms an unlikely friendship with a vending machine company customer rep (Watts) and her young son shortly after his wife dies in a tragic accident.
The movie is in theaters on April 8.

So now I see what they were doing. Austin lets himself be seen at Opies BBQ in Spicewood TX on Thursday and then that other tweet placing him in Marble Falls occurred on Friday. That placed Austin still in Texas late in the week so they knew we would think hey, he's still in Texas on Friday, he's going to go to SXSW.
And you know what they were probably then going to do? They were going to post that black & white picture of "Julian Baker" with the fan, get us to commit to squeeing that Austin was at Bangers with Jake, then pull the "that's an older picture of me - see, my hair is now purple" card, and there was going to be no pictorial evidence of Austin being at SXSW, only this "Julian Baker" tweet, and then I'm laying odds that Mgmnt was going to send Austin back to LA so that he could appear with his beard 'Chlo Bennet at the Kids Choice Awards which were being held last night.
