However, there are quite a few good reasons to see this robust dramatization of a 1996 assault on the world's tallest mountain that went disastrously wrong, beginning with the eye-popping, you-are-there visual techniques that make you feel glad indeed that you're not actually up there at 29,029 feet, but also including multiple characters sufficiently humanized to create real concern for their fates, and an attention to realistic detail that gives the film texture. Universal should be able to add this one to its impressive list of 2015 box-office successes.

Mori’s Yasuko, the lone female climber on the Adventure Consultants team, stands out as a figure of sweet yet unshakable determination, while Watson is heartrending as the team’s coordinator and den mother; beyond the mountain, Knightley and Robin Wright give deeply felt performances as women haunted by the possibility that they may have seen the last of their husbands.

I wasn’t expecting Everest to be as good as it is because Kormakur’s last two films, Contraband (’12) and 2 Guns (’13), were escapist machismo popcorn fizz. But he has manned up and done the right thing with Everest, especially given the fact that realism has never been so out of favor in Hollywood these days as it is today. And yet Kormakur has delivered an epic thriller that is all about that highly precious commodity — a film that thoroughly respects the laws of physics — an almost unheard-of thing.
The fact that major studios, the only entities that can afford to make big-scale, knockout escapist fare, have more or less divested themselves of reality-governed action thrillers has been a huge development over the past 10 to 15 years.
Said it before, saying it again: The nerd comic-book fantasy superhero CG bullshit aesthetic has all but destroyed an amazing realm that movies could and should get into — i.e., bad, threatening real-world stuff that can happen to you in the wrong situations or from dealing with the wrong people but rendered realistically and not in flagrant defiance of physical law, so you can believe in at least 95% of what you’re seeing.
Everest is therefore a huge shock — a film that actually respects the rules of nature and plausibility and takes your breath away all the same. That is one helluva thing.

Shot in Nepal and the Italian Alps, cinematographer Salvatore Totino has a lot to work with and he makes the most of it. The technical aspects of this grueling film are superb throughout, including top-notch special effects and sound work. The movie should be a real player in the crafts categories of the Oscars, but I have a feeling it could go even further than that. Hopefully audiences will want to see this terrific film which represents the best of moviemaking at its most daunting.

i've seen EVEREST in 3D and it's absolutely mindblowing. you even forget about the amazing cast because the story and visuals are so great.
Gossip Cop has denied, but the way they did is worse than a confirmation, which leads me to believe that she really has refused to take the test

On the mountain we’re introduced to the rest of the cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal’s Scott Fischer, a competing mountain guide that has butt heads with Rob in the past. It should be noted right away that Gyllenhaal has maybe 20 minutes or so of screen time in the actual film so audience members who go there expecting another star turn from him will likely be disappointed. However, with so much story to tell and so many characters to keep track of – Kormakur has made a smart move casting actors that can do a lot with a little, and Gyllenhaal in particular brings much more to his character than might have been on the script initially.
