My enthusiasm for Jake Gyllenhaal‘s grinning, bug-eyed, awards-contending performance in Dan Gilroy‘s Nightcrawler led me to fork over $140 for a ticket to Nick Payne much-hailed Constellations, a two-hander in which Jake costars with The Affair‘s Ruth Wilson. It’s a short (70 minutes), head-trippy play about love and physics and endless parallel storylines co-existing in a shifty-eyed universe. And about Jake doing a deliciously spot-on British accent (a friend describes his patois as that of a “British Rastawannabe”) as a bee-keeper named Roland, and the British-born Wilson delivering a kind of sad and vibrant and open to all things routine, even in the face of death.

Here’s how I put it to a friend earlier today:
“Excellent, touching performances by Jake and Ruth but the play, however brilliantly conceived, is a bit dicey. It’s basically a what-iffer that spends the entire 70 minutes trying on different moods and emotions and revealings this and that way, over and over and over. Two people inhabiting several voices, characters, permutations and fates. A kind of shuffling-the-deck, hopping-around, trying this on for size and then moving on type of deal. Spiritual, celestial, mathematical…almost a kind of board-game feeling.
“But the bottom line is that the swift stopping-and-starting-and-stopping-and-then-starting-up-again scheme, the sampling of one possible scenario to another to another to another and back again, interrupts the flow that people generally watch plays and movies for, and my response (and please take it with a grain) is a bit on the “hmmm” side.
“Constellations felt to me like more of an acting exercise than anything else, and for that I was generally delighted with both Jake and Ruth.”

There was a brief time when it seemed like Jake Gyllenhaal, one of the best actors of his generation, might get swallowed up into the Hollywood blockbuster machine that churns out dreck like 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. But when his would-be franchise failed to launch, Gyllenhaal went back to the kinds of indies that launched his career, putting out a series of impressive (and often overlooked) performances in End of Watch, Prisoners, and Enemy.
Impressive as those performances are, they feel like an appetizer for the feast he offers in Nightcrawler as the skin-crawling opportunist Lou Bloom. Bloom, a freelance crime journalist who sells gory footage to news outlets, is the year's most fascinating movie character. Gaunt and bug-eyed, Gyllenhaal plays Bloom as a sociopath who has spent his life internalizing every cliché about self-actualization and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. He's a pure sociopath, but he's found a language he can speak in the glib, buzzy jargon of middle-management and motivational speakers, and he uses his expertise to manipulate or destroy anyone in his way.
"What if my problem wasn't that I don't understand people, but that I don't like them?" he says in a blistering monologue near the end of the film. Clearly Jake is all about himself now. He's got one goal and that is to get an Oscar nom that will erase the Brokeback's nom.
The fact that Jake is putting his own career in front of his kids' welfare tells me that he is thinking only of himself now. So where does that put Austin? Austin has always seemed like a strong person to me but now he seems like a rollover when it has come to Jake.
Austin doesn't work outside of the home anymore. He never tweets. He follows his beard around like he has nothing else to do.

INTERVIEWER :You’ve said that the characters of Jack and Ennis from “Brokeback Mountain” were the first two characters that started to feel “very damn real” to you. Has it happened again since then?
PROULX: That was true of a number of the characters in Fine Just the Way It Is. But I think it happened with “Brokeback Mountain” because it took me so long to write that story. It took at least six weeks of steady work, which is not my usual pace. So yeah, they got a life of their own. And unfortunately, they got a life of their own for too many other people too.
INTERVIEWER: What do you mean?
PROULX: I wish I’d never written the story. It’s just been the cause of hassle and problems and irritation since the film came out. Before the film it was all right.
INTERVIEWER: Did people object to the fact that gay characters were in the center of a story about Wyoming?
PROULX: Oh, yeah. In Wyoming they won’t read it. A large section of the population is still outraged. But that’s not where the problem was. I’m used to that response from people here, who generally do not like the way I write. But the problem has come since the film. So many people have completely misunderstood the story. I think it’s important to leave spaces in a story for readers to fill in from their own experience, but unfortunately the audience that “Brokeback” reached most strongly have powerful fantasy lives. And one of the reasons we keep the gates locked here is that a lot of men have decided that the story should have had a happy ending. They can’t bear the way it ends—they just can’t stand it. So they rewrite the story, including all kinds of boyfriends and new lovers and so forth after Jack is killed. And it just drives me wild. They can’t understand that the story isn’t about Jack and Ennis. It’s about homophobia; it’s about a social situation; it’s about a place and a particular mindset and morality. They just don’t get it. I can’t tell you how many of these things have been sent to me as though they’re expecting me to say, Oh great, if only I’d had the sense to write it that way. And they all begin the same way—I’m not gay, but . . . The implication is that because they’re men they understand much better than I how these people would have behaved. And maybe they do. But that’s not the story I wrote. Those are not their characters. The characters belong to me by law.
INTERVIEWER: Did you get the same sort of reaction to your characters when The Shipping News was made into a film?
PROULX: No, I haven’t had the same sort of problem with anything else I’ve ever written. Nothing else. People saw it as a story about two cowboys. It was never about two cowboys. You know you have to have characters to hang the story on but I guess they were too real. A lot of people have adopted them and put their names on their license plates. Sometimes the cart gets away from the horse—the characters outgrew the intent.
I’m trying to exorcise them now, because Charles Wuorinen is doing an opera of “Brokeback Mountain.” And I’m working on the libretto, working on changes so I can finally get Jack and Ennis loose from my life.
INTERVIEWER: Were you tempted to say no to that project?
PROULX: I was, but then I figured that one of these idiots who loves happy endings would come along and start messing with it. I want to keep the story as it is. It’s a strong story and it shouldn’t be mangled into everybody lives happily ever after. Not that that could happen in an opera.
