Why Celebrities Fake-Date - Explanations from a Publicist

I feel like a buzzkill when I have to explain to friends and family how the cute celebrity couple on the cover of US Magazine they adore is, in fact, not a couple at all. Rarely do they believe me, until the news trickles out weeks, months, or years later that the couple were never together or one half of the couple is not even straight.

Many of these relationships are fake. Why would these celebrities even agree to being part of a fake relationship?

 1. Keeps Them Relevant There is a statistic out there that says that only about 7 percent of the Screen Actor’s Guild members are working actors. There is an insane amount of competition in their industry and nearly every actor fears their last movie or sitcom was their last job. In order to remind casting and movie directors to keep them on their short list they know they need to be in all those tabloids you hate to admit you read every week. These actors know that if you are talking about what they are wearing and who they are dating that it helps their chances landing an audition.

 2. Boosts Their Paycheck Major movie studios and television networks spend an outrageous amount of marketing dollars to ensure you know about their movie or television show. When the actors in their films or television programs are also on the cover of US, People, Star Magazine, etc. they are obtaining “free media”. For example, when Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn were dating their relationship was covered by all the major celebrity media outlets. This coincided with the release of their movie ‘The Break Up.”

Although the studios spent millions of dollars on marketing the film, they earned just as much free media surrounding the relationship between its stars. So if you are a celebrity who lands themselves in these sort of articles you are able to use it as a bargaining chip for your next paycheck. If I get you (the movie studio) all this free publicity, I have to be reciprocated. Anyone who is dating Jennifer Aniston is guaranteed to be on the cover of all the tabloid magazines that week (i.e. Bradley Cooper).

 3. Helps Maintain Their Brand Celebrities want to control their image. Many celebrities mask their sexuality to ensure they continue getting specific kinds of roles. (There are only a handful of actors who are able to float easily from drama to comedy). Once you are boxed into certain kind of roles it is difficult to be casted for anything else. (Can you imagine Hugh Grant in anything but romantic comedies? Can you imagine Jason Stratham in anything but thrillers? These actors are straight – just giving an example).

So these actors will pretend to be in a relationship to maintain their image as a sex symbol. Movie studios fear women will not buy tickets to a romantic comedy starring a gay man in the leading role. Actresses may agree to “beard” these actors because this allows them to stay relevant (see #1), boost their paycheck (see #2), or help maintain their brand as a sex symbol.

I also want to point out that a slew of celebrities call paparazzi and arrange photo opportunities. Next time you read about a celebrity complaining about the paps (i.e. Jessica Biel in Vogue) remember they are tipping them off to ensure they get their picture taken.

The ‘Prisoners’ script, written by Aaron Guzikowski does a lot of things right. Its elliptical portrait of Gyllenhaal, the detective who always gets his man, is top notch. There are quick references to a troubled childhood in group homes, oddly placed tattoos and a not-too-overdone facial tick. From the inertia of a thousand cop movies you get that he is a troubled, dedicated soul – this movie feels no need to get too specific about it.
As such, the moments between a desperate Jackman and by-the-book (but crying-on-the-inside) Gyllenhall are outstanding.

So what of the films that WILL premiere at Toronto? I’m looking at five major contenders, plus a misty conglomerate of potential dark horses, all of them hoping for the kind of out-of-nowhere buzz that benefitted, say, “Crash” (the last Best Picture winner to actually premiere at Toronto). Basically, here’s what to look for at Toronto among the premieres. By this time two weeks from now, think of how many of these films will be STONE-COLD LOCKS for all the Oscars that Ellen Degeneres can throw at them!

Jackman, 44, and Gyllenhaal, 32, hung with a group of agent types while unwinding after a busy night. The duo looked like they were having a blast together. You can tell the "Prisoners" co-stars genuinely enjoy each other's company.

Prisoners marks Gyllenhaal’s second collaboration with Villeneuve, along with the José Saramago adaptation Enemy, which has its world premiere Sunday at TIFF. The actor also explores new territory, alternating between tough top cop, young keener out of his depth and open-faced, sympathetic everyman.

“We very quickly bonded,” Villeneuve said. “We had a lot of things in common, as artists and men. We became, very quickly, close friends. Our relationship is born out of the will to see the truth and be authentic. We’re super straightforward (with each other), like brothers.

“It was a bit scary for the crew, because we can say harsh things to each other, be angry and yell at each other, hate each other, then love each other again. But we loved working together so much on Enemy that I felt there was a chance to go much further with Prisoners.”

Prisoners is in theatres Sept. 20.

Here’s Hugh JackMeOff and Jake Gyllenhaal at last night’s Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Prisoners, which is a hardcore gay porn about a nudist men’s prison where the air conditioning doesn’t work and every inmate drops the soap. I wish. Never mind that Jake looks like somebody poured an entire bottle of Crisco over his head, he and Hugh laughed and giggled and cackled and laughed and laughed their b-holes off. They joked about how funny it would be if this picture was taken in the back of a closet and then they laughed about how Tom Cruise is probably going to Photoshop himself into the middle of this man sandwich. Laughs and giggles all around.

The Hottie McNaughties posed together for the cameras looking happy to be reunited. Jackman even gave a mighty thumbs up (or should we say claws up?) while holding on to his buddy.

The handsome stars, who gave Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt a run for their money, wore complementary grey suits and matching slicked back hairdos. Hmmm. Do you think they helped each other decide what to wear for their big night?

We can just picture it in our heads:

Hugh Jackman: "Oy, mate! Should I go with gun metal grey or dove grey?"

Jake Gyllenhaal: "Dude. I don't know what the difference is. Just put on that tie and let's go party!"

I think Danis is going to win

“Whenever I've tried to describe it I've always said, “I wonder if you would even call it a movie,’” Gyllenhaal confirms. “In a way you would call it an experience.” However the next time they work together (which really seems to be an inevitability with Villeneuve declaring at one point "I would love to make all my movies with Jake") they'll have a heavier weight of expectation to face. Perhaps they'll want to subvert it and do a knockabout comedy? "A musical, that's our next project." Gyllenhaal laughed. Villeneuve begged to disagree: "I think it's going to be a dark violent film about the unconscious again." Which, on the evidence of "Prisoners" and "Enemy," is absolutely fine by us.

...
Thick with weighty themes, disquieting portent and anxious tension, Villeneuve—the Foreign Language Academy-Award nominated director of “Incendies”—crafts a gripping slow burn portrait of the male id/ego, our self-destructive tendencies and how they control us. Deeply in sync with his director’s tenebrous dream, Gyllenhaal obviously carries the entire film on his shoulders, and he delivers with a smoldering internalized performance of torment that is easily his finest work. The conflicted men are distinct, but it’s the nuanced, strange similarities between them and their own personal agonies that make for a remarkably committed turn by the young actor.
...
Part existentialist thriller, part psychosexual drama, “Enemy,” like Villeneuve’s earlier festival film, is exceptionally dark, harrowing, and especially engrossing. Those that have seen “Prisoners” can attest to the methodical, hyper-attuned clinician Villeneuve has become in his approach to genre, and “Enemy” has the same quivering pitch of masterful meticulousness. Not only is “Enemy” once again first-rate filmmaking, it’s profoundly unnerving. A challenging, sometimes abstract piece of work, “Enemy” doesn’t reveal itself easily, but its coiling ouroboros quality is fascinating and spellbindingly disturbing. A riveting examination of intimacy (and the lack thereof), identity, duality and the nether regions of our unconscious desires, “Enemy” is a transfixing grand slam that certifies Villeneuve as the real deal and one of the most exciting new voices in cinema today. Selfishly, I'm glad "Prince of Persia" didn't do as well as it was supposed to do, because I'm afraid you'd be doing "Prince of Persia IV" today instead of these movies.
[Smiles] I have to say that I'm so happy that I've gotten to do these movies.

That's a very delicate way of putting it. Jerry Bruckheimer wanted it to be the next "Pirates" franchise. Movies like that take up a lot of time and maybe we wouldn't see some of these performances that we've seen recently from you.
I think it's possible. I mean, witness to it in this movie is that this is a larger budget movie, actually, in a certain way. I mean, it's a studio movie that they wouldn't put that much money into, particularly if it's not one of five directors who want to make it. You know what I mean? Denis was not a risk; he had made one movie that was extraordinary. But it's not like, "We'll give him all this money."

He's not a risk creatively. But, financially, to a studio ...
Yeah. How do you know you're going to recoup what his vision is. You know, when you see a collaboration between somebody like Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, and they kind of keep coming back to each other in that way and that they trust each other ...

Is that what this relationship is going to become?
[Laughs] Well, I wish. I mean, that would be amazing. But I think what Denis and I have is we have a great love for studio movies or larger movies, but keeping the human aspect to it and the psychology and the sense of detail and preparation and exploration and never taking anything for granted -- which happens when somebody gives you a lot of money sometimes to make something. I think we both share that, and his intention, I love. His intention is just to make great movies, no matter the size. And I think he really has, particularly in the case of "Prisoners."

TIFF Review: Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Enemy’ Starring Jake Gyllenhaal Is A Haunting Look At Our Dark Desires

At the risk of blatantly repeating ourselves, Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve are on the cusp of a banner 2013 that is about to hit its crest. Their first-unveiled collaboration, the harrowing, Fincher-with-more-emotional-resonance crime thriller “Prisoners” has already bruised audiences in Telluride and Toronto (read our review here). But if “Prisoners” is the grimmest studio film you’ve seen since “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” then “Enemy”—chronologically their first collaboration—is the equally dark but more experimental and arty cousin. And a terrifically haunting one at that.

Imagine the Paul Thomas Anderson of “There Will Be Blood” making a Brian De Palma movie, or Claire Denis directing Christopher Nolan’s “Memento.” While those superlatives do give you a taste of the striking, sensual disposition simmering in the French-Canadian filmmaker’s engrossing and provocative psychological thriller, it actually does a disservice to Villeneuve’s superb craft and darkened vision that truly has coalesced into something extraordinary this year.
“Chaos is merely order waiting to be deciphered,” the opening titles menacingly state before the movie emerges from black and then burrows down into the dark subconscious. A faithful yet distinctive adaptation of José Saramago's "The Double," Villeneuve’s second festival drama stars Jake Gyllenhaal in a bewitching dual role as an increasingly paranoid teacher who believes he's found his exact doppelganger. The actor stars as Adam Bell, a disheveled and sullen university lecturer who is living in isolated, self-loathing despair. In a threadbare and inadequately lit Toronto apartment, Adam grades papers and only stops to have animalistic sex with the comely girlfriend (Mélanie Laurent) whom he otherwise seems disinterested in. A random conversation with a colleague leads Adam to rent a recommended movie and within, on the edges of the frames, in a bit part, he sees himself. Or at least what appears to be his perfect twin. Shocked and disturbed, Adam begins to frantically investigate who this lookalike might be, and through online searches discovers the identical man to be Anthony Clair (Gyllenhaal again), a struggling actor living in the badlands of Mississauga (a dispiriting ghetto suburb on the outskirts of Toronto). Curious, fearful and strangely excited, Adam begins to shadow Anthony from afar, and even comes in contact with his doppelganger's pregnant, estranged wife (a standout Sarah Gadon) while searching for clues. When Adam reaches out to his mother (Isabella Rossellini) with this disconcerting revelation, in hopes that she may have some light to shed or a family secret to finally unveil, she proves to be of little help.

#2Review said...

Increasingly frayed and troubled by this discovery, Adam eventually attempts to engage Anthony and when they finally meet face to face, the two men—already suffering from the pains of their ailing relationships—become bizarrely connected and dangerously conjoined. Are they lost twins? Each other’s somehow-connected other half? As the picture digs deeper into the pair's uneasy mental turmoil, it hypnotically delves into the unconscious of the two men and how their sexual desires are more inexorably linked than they could ever imagine.
With apologies to David Cronenberg, never has Toronto looked so grand and yet so ill and claustrophobic. Transforming the city into an existential wasteland (clearly influenced by the depressing fringes of Mississauga), cinematographer Nicolas Bolduc’s sickly muted palette envelopes the movie in a distressing, cigarette-stain yellow (the film also boasts some of the most genuinely uncomfortable aerial cityscape shots seen in some time). Musically, the exciting on-the-rise composer duo of Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans (“Martha Marcy May Marlene,” “Simon Killer") bring an atonal A-game of discordant cellos and oblique half notes that would make Jonny Greenwood proud, and keeps the movie tilted on its discomfiting axis.
Here’s Jake Gyllenhaal at the premiere of Enemy last night. His girlfriend, Sports Illustrated model Alyssa Miller, was not photographed on the carpet. But she was there. I saw them together at the Hugo Boss after-party and it was like a fragrance ad come to life. They’re attractive enough as it is when they’re apart. When they’re side by side, and she has both arms wrapped around his neck, and his hand is on her leg, it’s ridiculous, so gorgeous it’s hard not to keep staring.

They were in a cabana on the rooftop of The Chase. Platters of oysters were being brought over to them. When I first saw them, they were seated, and she was hugging him from behind, around the shoulders, her chin resting on one side, and he was smiling at her adoringly, and you could tell – these two are in love, it’s for real, for real, for real. I immediately went hunting for the oysters for regular people at the back of the restaurant where it was set up buffet styles. There was also a bucket of shrimp and a thousand cheeses and sausages and olives and tomatoes with burrata so what I’m saying is that it took me a while to get back to them because when food is free, NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

Jake and Alyssa were still there when I got back from gorging. This time he was turned towards her, and with the pad of his thumb, he was gently rubbing a piece of food from her bottom lip. HOT. They’re hot. Mega, mega, MEGA hot.

After a while they stood up so that Jake could glad-hand well-wishers and movie executives. Alyssa wasn’t clingy. She kept up her own conversations with other producer types and friends. I saw her laughing a lot, comfortably, and generally being NOT the kind of model who stands in the corner and pouts. I left around 10pm to hit up another party but I did see Jake again briefly at the end of the night at Grey Goose Soho House though I didn’t linger in his area because James McAvoy, the end.

Someone posted they saw the beard at the premiere of Prisoners too. I didn’t believe it because when is the last time Jake took one of his beards to a film premiere? At least she was told to skip the red carpet. You know she must’ve hated that.

James Franco: 'I wish I was gay' said...

...
Speaking to The Daily Beast, Franco discussed the dual nature of the situation.

‘There’s two sides to what happened in the Roast. If that’s what they were going to make fun of me for, I was like, "Great! Bring on the gay jokes!" because these aren’t insults at all,' he said.

‘I don’t even care if people think I’m gay, so it was like, “Awesome!”

'I mean, I wish I was…I wish I was gay….part of it is that movies are a place where people can project things and identify with characters, and it’s the same thing with actors outside of their roles—and it’s been that way since Hollywood was around.'

He added: ‘That’s why there’s a lot of conjecture. That’s been one of my things, too.

'My relationship with my public image over the past four or five years has just become weirder and weirder, because I look at it and it’s me, and it’s not me, so if other people want to use that for their own purposes or needs, I’m fine with it.’

Wentworth Miller: 'I tried to kill myself at 15 over being gay' said...

...
He said: ‘Growing up I was a target. Speaking the right way, standing the right way, holding your wrist the right way.

'Every day was a test and there was a thousand ways to fail. A thousand ways to portray yourself to not live up to someone else’s standards of what was accepted.’

He then added: ‘The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15. I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills.

'I don’t remember what happened over the next couple of days, but I’m pretty sure come Monday morning I was on the bus back to school pretending everything was fine.’

Miller also spoke about remaining in the closet when he was at the height of his fame.

He feared coming out might have a negative impact on his career.

'When I thought about the possibility of coming out might impact me and the career that I had worked so hard for I was filled with fear,' he said.

Miller recently came out as gay via an open letter. He refused to attend a film festival in St. Petersburg due to Russia’s anti-gay laws.

Probably. I think he makes Jake a little uncomfortable though. In the photocall before the press conference Hugh is standing behind Jake, almost plastered to his back, and Jake moves to the other side after a few moments. Hugh then looks around like huh?

I thought the same thing, in a picture you can clearly see Hugh tries to grab the Jake's ass

It would be so much better if we had video of that. I can't help but think Hugh's hand was in a downward motion after clapping and he wasn't trying to touch the Gyllenbutt at all. It makes for a fun pic though.

Here’s a bit of movie math for you: At this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Jake Gyllenhaal gives three strong performances in two movies for one director. If you’re confused — or wondering whether this is the fortunate byproduct of all those infinitely spawning Gyllenhaals in 2011’s Source Code — then just know that your confusion is exactly what Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve intended.

You’ll find a good 66.6 percent of those Gyllenhaals in Enemy, directed by homegrown Canadian hero Villenueve (whose film Incendies was Oscar nominated in 2010 for Best Foreign Language Film). In it, Gyllenhaal stars as Adam, a college professor whose days and nights seem awfully routine: Adam lectures his class about repetition, heads home to grade papers, doffs his clothes, and boffs girlfriend Melanie Laurent. Lather, rinse, repeat ... until Adam happens to watch a movie starring his doppelgänger in a bit part. Soon enough, Adam has tracked down this carbon copy — a part-time actor named Anthony (also played by Gyllenhaal, natch) — and before long, Adam and Anthony have become obsessed with one another, though the film frequently implies that this might actually be an elaborate, schizophrenic case of self-obsession.

To judge from some of the walkouts at the screening today, Enemy isn’t for everybody — it suggests a mash-up of director Shane Carruth’s two head-scratchers, Primer and Upstream Color, and the movie is clearly goading you to parse its clever timeline with your friends afterwards — but it’s a good showcase for Gyllenhaal, who juggles both Adam and Anthony with aplomb, even as Enemy seeks to intentionally blur the lines between both men. It’s too bad that a more fitting title, The Two Jakes, was already taken; then again, Enemy is based on the José Saramago novel The Double, a title that’s already been claimed by another Toronto film ... Richard Ayoade’s The Double, which stars Jesse Eisenberg as a man who confronts his own dopplegänger.

This weird situation — double the double movies — suggests some more meta-textual readings: Are both movies somehow the same movie? Are all the Gyllenhaals and Eisenbergs different facets of one single character? Is this the epiphany at the end of the second act where I realize that I’m Gyllenhaal and/or Eisenberg? It would explain the moment yesterday when a strangely accented woman accosted me in the elevator to tell me about her run-in with Jesse Eisenberg, whom she’d just seen on the street. “He’s so short, and his jeans were so tight,” she insisted, before giving me the once-over. Her eyes alighted on my skinny jeans.

Enemy is still seeking distribution, but Gyllenhaal’s other Toronto collaboration with Villeneuve, the dramatic thriller Prisoners, is getting a big awards season push by Warner Bros. this month. Hugh Jackman is the lead, a distraught father who takes the law into his own hands when his daughter is kidnapped, but Gyllenhaal delivers his best work in years as the detective assigned to the case. It would be hard to call Gyllenhaal’s performance unshowy — the character has a blinking tic and awfully conspicuous tattoos that practically announce, “Ask me about my backstory” — but it still takes good advantage of Gyllenhaal’s inherent calmness, especially when it pits him against Jackman’s justifiably overwrought sad dad. It’s a quietly appealing turn that could put Gyllenhaal back into the Best Supporting Actor race eight years after his first Oscar-nominated role in Brokeback Mountain.

Even though Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal first collaborated on Enemy, it’s Prisoners that will get the first (and wider) theatrical release, and if that seems like an unusual twist ... well, isn’t that tortured timeline a little apropos, given the subject matter? At the very least, this concentrated triple dose of Gyllenhaal will give Hollywood types and festgoers a chance to reappraise the actor, who has kept a low studio profile since the 2010 flop Prince of Persia. God only gives you as many Gyllenhaals as you’re prepared to handle; maybe this week, we’ve learned there’s no such thing as too many.
