How To Spot Publicity Whores?

Caught in the Act!

How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.

Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article, March 4, 2006:

A delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.

It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.

Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.

The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.

When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.

Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says. Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.

The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts.

Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.

"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."

Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side.

The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.

The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yéle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.

Ms. Jolie then let Yéle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' "

By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.

In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

Jake Gyllenhaal Is an 'Incredible Uncle' to Maggie's Girls + video said...

While Jake Gyllenhaal has no children of his own just yet, he says being a doting uncle to his sister Maggie's two daughters, Ramona, 6 and Gloria Ray, born in April, has helped him to better "navigate the world of sibling stuff."

Watching the young girls discover their sibling relationships, Gyllenhaal, 31, says, shines a light on the competitiveness he experienced growing up with older sister Maggie, 34, who wed actor Peter Sarsgaard in 2009, the actor tells Anderson Cooper in an interview Friday.

Gyllenhaal, who is currently starring in the police drama End of Watch, confided to Anderson Cooper in a segment of his talk show, Anderson Live, that he and Maggie are hard on each other. But they're also supportive, he says, especially when it comes to talking about their work as actors.

He calls the nieces "extraordinary," and "the best thing that happened to my family probably ever," noting he loves his new role and is trying hard to be the best uncle possible.

"It's a similar dynamic between me and my sister to this day," he says. "I think we are each other's toughest critics, but we also, I think, love each other's work more than anyone else."

"Even at this age, my older niece will come up to her [sister] and joke to her, and she'll laugh and then she'll run away and she starts to cry," says Gyllenhaal.

apparently this post contains an audio interview in which Jake was once again asked about Heath and he pretty much reacted the way he did when Nate asked him...

Looks like Jake can't say something coherent about Heath on the spot, just fumbling for words then falling back on stock answers. Makes his more articulate answers in articles (to questions about Heath) seem scripted in hindsight.

Good interview though, if you get past Jake's likes and you knows. He's an intelligent guy, I just wish he wouldn't talk so much like a fratboy.

End of Watch In Tight Battle for #1 Against Clint Eastwood and Jennifer Lawrence

^^^

A trio of new releases are in a tight battle for #1 at the box office this weekend.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s police drama End of Watch and Clint Eastwood’s baseball flick Trouble with the Curve are both tracking toward roughly $13.5 million openings, with Jennifer Lawrence’s thriller House at the End of the Street just slightly behind, on a $12.5 million pace.

It should come down to the wire on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Finding Nemo re-release in 3D will likely finish in fourth place at approximately $8 million.

Two shoot-em-ups, the new Dredd 3D and holdover Resident Evil: Retribution, are neck and neck for the #5 spot, with both movies on pace for $5.5 million.

The Master, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman, should be in seventh place (despite limited release), ahead of The Possession ($2.7 million) and Lawless ($2.3 million).

The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner, is expected to earn roughly $1.5 million to wrap up the Top 10.

Gossip Cop will have updates.

What are you seeing this weekend?

1:16 PM, sorry but I think that’s purely wishful thinking on your part.

No is just my opinion as I have clarified, but it is an opinion, based on the observation of the obvious , if you allow me, and I believe an opinion enough shared, but naturally I can be wrong.

1:57 PM, sorry but Jake said that’s purely wishful thinking on your part.

Still, he also remembers how much they'd be laughing backstage at events: "For such a serious actor as Heath was, he was crazy funny. Dark funny, but funny." Out front, they came to be sobered by people's reactions, as they realized that the movie was bigger than all of them, bigger than they'd realized. Gyllenhaal tells me a strange thing about the filming, an experience he'd just rhapsodized about as so magical: "In retrospect, it just was a painful process." As though there's no reason why both memories should not be equally true. "I don't think any of us can watch it to this day," he says. "I remember talking to Michelle very recently and her being like, 'I didn't know if it was any good or not.'"

Afterward, he and Ledger stayed in close touch. "We'd talk a few times a month. I mean, he was a friend. He was like my creative partner." The news of Ledger's death came while Gyllenhaal was filming Brothers.

Q: Could you make any sense of it at all?

A lengthy pause. "I don't really like talking about it. That period of time was... It was difficult."

Nice quote, 2:10 PM, but what does it have to do with what I said? Sure we're all free to believe whatever makes us feel better, doesn't mean it’s true.

Anonymous said...

So what? Jake has almost waited for two years before saying a word on Heath, still today after four years he doesn't succeed in to express a coherent sentence when he speaks of him, an interviews writing and planned, cannot say more, of the emotion of the sadness and and embarrassment of the difficult answers of Jake, live and point-blank.but, if you want say, that Heath was not important for Jake, because the big deal was Austin, have the honest to admit that Jake would have dumped Austin and whoever other in an instant if he had also an half possibility with Heath.

Anonymous said...

Nice quote, 2:10 PM, but what does it have to do with what I said?

2:23 PM, again I think you’re reading too much into Jake’s lack of coherence. If thinking it’s out of too much feeling makes some people feel better that’s fine. I, however, didn’t detect anything different in Jake’s tone of voice when he spoke about Heath. I can’t pretend to know Jake’s feelings for Austin but IMO his "feelings" for Heath are way, way overblown on here. Don’t know why, maybe because of BBM?

Anonymous said...

2:25 PM, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I never said Jake didn’t talk about Heath.

Anonymous said...

2:50 PM - of course you don't understand. People who play stupid always have problem with understanding simple facts.

Anonymous said...

maybe because of BBM?

Maybe because when they were together Jake looked at Heath as the sweetest piece of the cake, or because its crushon him was so obvious thatat times it was almost a pain, or embarrassing to look at him, as at Ophra, this doesn't have anything to tdo with BBM, is not Jack and Ennis, is Jake and Heath, and Jake had for Heath the big crush ever, and contrarily of Ennis Heath didn't reciprocate.

Jake looks at a lot of people’s mouths like he wants to make out with them. That’s bad eyesight.

Hollywood Matchmaking: Jake & Jessica
September 21, 2012
Posted at 7:15 PM

God Jake Gyllenhaal looked handsome last night at opening night of his off-Broadway play If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet. I mean, I’m not into the beard, but even that beard can’t take away from how attractive he is. Speaking of that beard - while women may not be feeling it, do you know how much beard envy he’s getting from the men? Almost every dude I talked to at TIFF was all about Jake’s beard.

Anyway, Jessica Chastain was also there last night. And since I’m obsessed with setting up famous people and finding the right (imaginary) combinations, I’ve now decided that Jake is perfect for her and they should totally be together. She has the credentials, as you know, and now that he’s stopped trying to be a Disney action hero and is choosing smaller projects and stage opportunities, looking for more interesting work, they could be a creative powerhouse.

On either side, on stature and standing, it’s an equal draw too. You could say, given his recent romantic resume, that she’s actually an upgrade. And there would be benefits to both on profile. Jake hasn’t had a significant attachment since Taylor Swift (OMG that was two years ago already?) and coming back with a respected acclaimed actor like Jessica Chastain is a strong move. As for Jessica, though she’s well known to everyone in the industry, it wouldn’t hurt to get a love bump to grow public awareness.

Anonymous said...

Poor, stupid Lainey.

Anonymous said...

I tried this question over on OMG yesterday when lainey's article was brought up, but no one answered, i'll try here.

Why does Lainey cover for Jake, but she doesn't hold back on anyone else?
She's not shy about calling out other closet cases, BIG NAMES, like George Clooney, Matt Damon, WIll Smith, Tom Cruise, John Travolta. And lesser names like Alexander Skarsgard, Zac Efron, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Chase Crawford, Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas, Kelan Lutz and many more. But Jake G. she helps out? Why?

Anonymous said...

Lainey calls gay all those people? Are you sure?

Anonymous said...

my opinion on the Jake and Heath debate: they became friends during a pretty normal shooting of a movie , than the movie became this huge thing and fans in love with Ennis and Jack needed the actors to be really, really close and best friends (or more)forever . They sort of played into it a little and later couldn't really get out of it anymore . So they were friends but not incredibly close best friends. Work friends as opposed to personal friends.

Anonymous said...

Damn 6:54 PM, you really despise Jake.

Anonymous said...

I think they all remained very good friends after BBM, Heath, Jake and Michelle. If they were just work friends, Heath and Michelle wouldn't have named Jake Matilda's Godfather.

See how hard it is for Jake when somebody brings up Heath? It hit him hard, probably still does to this day.

I don't think they were romantically involved, but I think they were very close. JMO

7:11 PM, what some see as hard for Jake others might see as a normal reaction. Jake, to me, sounds fine in the EoW interview. Sure he’s not articulate, but other than that he seems fine. He even lets out a laugh if you listen. I mean, I’m sure he’s upset about Heath’s death but not to the extent some people think. Matt Damon and Christian Bale got all chocked up about Heath in interviews and no one said it hit them hard because their friendships with Heath weren’t inflated by the media.

Anonymous said...

no one said it hit them hard

Damn 6:54 PM, you really despise Jake

Huh?

Anonymous said...

Can't you read, 6:52 AM?

fans in love with Ennis and Jack needed the actors to be really, really close and best friends (or more)forever . They sort of played into it a little and later couldn't really get out of it anymore

6:54 PM is suggesting that Jake would lie and pretend about his dead colleague for a bit of publicity.

Anonymous said...

Jake had his sister and niece do a photo op with Taylor Swift for publicity. Just sayin’.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, like that photo op with Reese and her kids at that natural park 3 days after Heath died. You know the out of the way park where a pap was just hanging out by coincidence.

Anonymous said...

Can't you read, 6:52 AM?

Yes I can read and since I'm also the one who wrote the 6:54 PM post I still don't get where the "I hate Jake" part is hidden in it . All I said was that they both played it up (when Heath was very much alive)and now Jake is stuck with it because Heaths death reminded people even more of the BBM dynamic

Dear 9:46 AM, one more time:

you really despise Jake

de·spise (d-spz)
1. To regard with contempt or scorn: despised all cowards and flatterers.
2. To dislike intensely; loathe: despised the frigid weather in January.
3. To regard as unworthy of one's interest or concern: despised any thought of their own safety.

I'm sure you all know that there is big difference between going for a walk with beards just to get paparazzi photos,
and lying about your relationship with deceased person (knowing there is someone, Michelle, who knows the truth).

LOL. There’s even a shot of Reese smirking at the paps while trying to look somber.

9:46 AM, I agree with you. If Heath lived and kept making movies with other actors the BBM dynamic would have receded from people’s minds by now but because he had only a few films in his filmography, with BBM being one of his most iconic, people cling to it. Same with Jake. He has great chemistry with Michael Pena in EoW and they’re friends - I don’t remember Heath supporting Jake at a premiere and vice versa like Michael Pena at the play - but to the public he will always be more tied to Heath. Even though he's always nice about it, I doubt Jake likes it much.

BOX OFFICE
Jake Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Lawrence tie for No. 1 on soft weekend

^^^

By Amy Kaufman
September 23, 2012, 9:16 a.m.
Despite the arrival of four new films in theaters this weekend, moviegoers weren't interested in heading to the box office.

For the fourth consecutive weekend, ticket sales were down compared to the same period in 2011, as none of the fresh arrivals at the cinema was able to top $15 million. Two spots tied for No. 1: the Jake Gyllenhaal cop drama "End of Watch" and the Jennifer Lawrence horror vehicle "House at the End of the Street," which each raked in a decent $13 million a piece. Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood's new baseball drama, "Trouble With the Curve" didn't hit a home run with audiences, as the film collected a so-so $12.7 million.

The big weekend loser, however, was "Dredd 3D," the science-fiction action film based on a British comic strip that was only able to muster up $6.3 million in sales. The film barely performed better than "The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson's drama that played this weekend in only 788 theaters, while "Dredd" screened in roughly 2,500 locations. After debuting with record-breaking numbers in only five cinemas last weekend, the film about a Scientology-esque cult leader took in an impressive $6.1 million upon its nationwide expansion.

Still, business overall was slow, and receipts dropped 25% this weekend when stacked up with the same three-day period last year.

"End of Watch" received the most positive critical reviews of any of the weekend's new wide releases, and audiences liked it best as well. Those who saw the film assigned it an average grade of A-, according to market research firm CinemaScore. (Eastwood's "Curve" received a B+ grade, while both "Dredd 3D" and "House at the End of the Street" each earned a B.)

The film stars Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as Los Angeles Police Department officers who form a close bond as they work the streets of South-Central L.A. together. The film was financed by Emmett/Furla Films and Exclusive Media, but Open Road Films acquired North American distribution rights for about $2 million.

The movie is the latest of Gyllenhaal's low-to-mid-budget films to perform modestly at the domestic box office. Last year, the 31-year-old's sci-fi thriller "Source Code" grossed a decent $54.7 million at the U.S. box office, but his romantic drama "Love and Other Drugs" took in a more disappointing $32.4 million in 2010.

"House at the End of the Street," is the first film that Jennifer Lawrence has appeared in since the release of the blockbuster "The Hunger Games" in March. The actress, who rose to fame after her Oscar-nominated turn in 2010's "Winter's Bone," recently began generating awards buzz again after her upcoming dramedy "Silver Linings Playbook" debuted to rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.

However, the 22-year-old won't experience that same level of success with "House at the End of the Street," in which she stars as a girl who moves to an eerie new neighborhood with her mother. The film was expected to debut with about $18 million, but couldn't rake in enough young females to defeat "End of Watch." ("House" appealed to a 61% female crowd, and 70% of the audience was under the age of 25.).....

6.10: and his mum puts the pressure on as well...

All the mothers are the same! :)

In my experience mothers tend to ease such pressure on their gay sons. Maybe Jake’s mum doesn’t know? Does David Ayer not know either, since he apparently kept telling him to marry a Hispanic girl?

“Maybe because when they were together Jake looked at Heath as the sweetest piece of the cake, or because its crushon him was so obvious thatat times it was almost a pain, or embarrassing to look at him…”
“…and Jake had for Heath the big crush ever…”

You state this as an indisputable truth! This is merely your opinion. I for one didn’t see that At All. I just think they were good friends.

Different topic: After the Anderson Cooper interview I just can’t believe how anyone would still think Jake has children of his own. No father would ever think or say that his nieces were the best things to ever happen in his family. He wasn’t exactly backed into a corner by the question; he completely volunteered the information.

I think that is a pretty good opening for EoW, made back almost double what it took to make. Please please see this movie!!! Gyllenhaal and Pena are both
fantastic! My fear is it is going to be forgotten with the opening of Looper and Hotel Trannsylvania next week. This is a movie that deserves
to be seen.

@ 1.34: Fair enough. I just didn’t see it the same way. To me they were just two young guys who went through an extraordinary and at times awkward experience together and this bonded them – and sometimes showed in terms of shyness, giggling etc. during public events and interviews. And although I found it endearing I never perceived it as sexual/romantic chemistry.

I think they were good friends - and fully believe Jake when he says he misses Heath.

Just as well, because with senility and Alzheimer's most of us won't remember who Jake is. The ones who do will be too weak with their fragile bones and broken hips to be able to stand up and cheer. And that's if anyone will still have their sight and hearing.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Hair: Blessing or Curse?

Jake Gyllenhaal continues his career relaunch as a female-friendly action star in this week's terrific buddy-cop drama End of Watch (read our review here). After his disastrous turn as the Prince of Persia, Gyllenhaal's star had been on the wane, but with two outstanding films in a row (counting last year's sleeper hit Source Code), the wide-eyed heartthrob is poised for a comeback. Those big, lake-blue eyes are impossible to resist, after all, and his pleasantly nonthreatening nice-Jewish-boyness is certainly an asset. But let's face it: the 31-year-old actor's secret weapon is the moody tresses that transform from role to role. But as advantageous as The Gyllenhair has been to its owner, the actor hasn't always utilized it wisely. Which Gyllenhair has helped the sad-eyed star, and which has done him wrong?
