How To Spot Publicity Whores?

Caught in the Act!

How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.

Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article, March 4, 2006:

A delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.

It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.

Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.

The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.

When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.

Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says. Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.

The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts.

Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.

"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."

Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side.

The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.

The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yéle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.

Ms. Jolie then let Yéle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' "

By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.

In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

Ann's brother is gay and she is very friendly and open mind about this topic and Heath wasn't a liar.
I don't know if Jake is gay but I don't think not even for a minut taht this 2 person had say a lie for Jake especially Heath. he was even too much clear.JMO

Sorry, you're either joking or have no idea what you're talking about.

Anonymous said...

"Jake is straight" is about protecting Jake, supporting him, doing him a favour. Any friend would do that.

Anonymous said...

I'm not joking and I know what I'm talking about, no need to be rude, I have also said that is just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

I know what I'm talking about

So what do you do when you're in position to talk about / mention your friend's / colleagues private life secret?

Anonymous said...

I maintain a dignified silence, especially if mine brother is gay and fight for his rights, I would never say a lie on this matter offending him in order to protect the secret life of a friend/coworker. Again JUST ME.

Anonymous said...

Well 7:52 AM, I'm happy that most people aren't like you, that they know what common politeness and friendship is about.

Anonymous said...

especially if mine brother is gay and fight for his rights, I would never say a lie on this matter offending him in order to protect the secret life of a friend/coworker

You can't offend gay person by helping other gay person with a white lie.

Anonymous said...

You don't know anything about me and my attitude about "common politeness and friendship" so stop with these argument, friendship gentleness and respect have to go together with the truth and respect of own values.

Anonymous said...

You don't know anything about me

YOU just told something about yourself. Sorry, I have a problem with people who lack empathy and kindness.

Anonymous said...

You can't offend gay person by helping other gay person with a white lie.

it is exactly what you are doing, confirming the thesis that to be gay is badly or wrong and therefore a thing to be hidden and of which to be ashamed and offending and diminishing the job and the courage of those people that instead openly fight for the rights of everybody.

Anonymous said...

YOU just told something about yourself. Sorry, I have a problem with people who lack empathy and kindness.

Sorry but This sentence is ridiculous, you don't know nothing of me and the fact that you think about having understood that type of person I em through two lines written on internet, it tells a lot more than you that of me.

*It tells a lot about you than about me.

Sorry my English is not improved :)

Empathy

Try to imagine yourself in Anne's shoes.

Jake is nice guy, good colleague. He's gay, but closeted and bearding because he's ambitious and dreams about being A-list actor. Anne knows how Hollywood works, how hard it is to succeed. It is not his fault that Hollywood prefers straight and "straight" leading men. It is not his fault that world is homophobic. Jake's closet isn't honorable thing, but it is hurting him more than anyone else.

Would you help him out if you can?

I would.

I believe that we, have two visions of the matter, diametrically opposite, Anne has a brother gay of which it is very proud and it is not necessary to lie for helping Jake, it is enough not to say anything or to arrange the questions or to joke on the matter. I think she has said what she supposes to be the truth. Is it the "true" the truth? I don't know .

Anonymous said...

Anne has a brother gay of which it is very proud and it is not necessary to lie for helping Jake

Of course it is not necessary.

But good people don't need special reasons to be kind and help others, they know that helping others is good for their soul, too.

Anonymous said...

To say a lie that could offend your brother and his choices of life, doesn't seem me a balm for the soul, when it comes with values and important choices for the life you have to choose in what side you want to be, I would choose my brother as I think whoever it would do, inclusive Anne.

Same Sex Marriage Canada Census 2011: Census Shows New Picture Of Couples' Unions

^^^

Gay and lesbian couples are walking down the aisle like never before, the 2011 Census suggests.

The number of same-sex marriages nearly tripled between 2006 and 2011, jumping from 7,465 to 21,015 couples, according to figures released by Statistics Canada Wednesday.

“We expected to enumerate more married same-sex couples than what we found in 2006, because in 2006 same-sex marriage had been legal for just a year basically,” Laurent Martel, the demographic analysis and projection section chef at Statistics Canada, told the Huffington Post Canada.

Proportionally, the 2011 Census suggests there were far more couples like Jim and John hearing wedding bells than Harry and Sally, with homosexual marriages jumping 181.5 per cent and heterosexual marriages growing by only 2.9 per cent in the last five years.

The data represents the first five-year period since same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada in July 2005 and since Statistic Canada began counting same-sex marriages in 2006.

Same-sex common-law relationships, however, were still more prevalent with about two-thirds, or 43,560, of gay and lesbian couples saying they hadn’t formally tied the knot.

In all, there were 42 per cent more same-sex couples counted in 2011 than in 2006. The Census recorded 64,575 same-sex couples compared to 45,350 in 2006 and 34,200 in 2001, when Statistics Canada first began noting same-sex common law relationships.

“One expects the numbers will increase each time, not because there are more gay people but because more gay couples want to be recognized and want to be counted,” Katherine Arnup, an associate professor at Carleton University’s School of Canadian Studies said.

Under-representation of same-sex couples, however, remains a problem, she added, especially in smaller communities where many gays, lesbians, and transgendered people “may still be closeted” and have concerns about homophobia.

“I think sometimes people are just hesitant to reveal that in an official government document even though there are all kinds of security measures and you won’t necessarily be identified but, you know, if it shows up in Beaverton, Ont., there are three lesbians couples people could fear, ‘Oh people are going to realize that is us’,” Arnup said. “I think that over time those fears will dissipate.”

Martel said Statistics Canada had validated the marriage figures with provincial and territorial records showing same-sex couples had in fact married much more in the last five years. “Will that continue in the future? We don’t know."

Nev Contd. said...

...Slightly more same-sex couples were male (54.5 per cent) than female (45.5 per cent). Same-sex couples were also younger than opposite-sex couples, with one-quarter of homosexual couples under 34 years of age and only 6.2 per cent over the age of 65. Only 17.5 per cent of heterosexual couples were under 34 years of age, while 17.8 per cent of couples were over 65.

Far fewer same-sex couples had children at home. Only 9.4 per cent of same-sex couples had at least one child at home while 47.2 per cent of heterosexual couples had families. Lesbians were almost five times more likely to have a child at home than gay males.

Although the 2011 Census paints a more diverse image of the Canadian family, the country’s family portrait still remains a married mother and father and their two children.

“The interesting thing for me is that while the story is always a story of change, there is this other story of ‘things might not be changing as much as we would expect them to be changing,” said Carrie Yodanis, an associate professor of sociology at the University of British Columbia.

Canadians don’t seem to be opting out of relationships, added Mary-Anne Murphy, an associate professor at UBC’s Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences.

“Despite the fact that the form has changed dramatically, the expectation for this love, marriage and a baby carriage really hasn’t,” Murphy said.

The percentage of common-law heterosexual couples continued to rise in 2011 at 16.7 per cent of all families, as did the number of lone-parent families (16.3 per cent of all families). The number of couples without children (44 per cent) surpassed the number of homes with children (39.2 per cent). And for the first time, stepfamilies were counted. Of the more than 3.68 million families in Canada, 12.6 per cent were stepfamilies.

The number of Canadians living alone also rose, slightly by 1 per cent, to 13.5 per cent of the population aged 15 and over. There were more people living alone than there were couples with children.

Same-sex couples accounted for 0.8 percent of all couples in 2011.

Hehe, yeah..most do-able man asexual? Oh god no..

I personally don't buy the bi either...he's either gay (yes please) or straight, in which case I'd like him to say something along the lines of: The rumours are false, I am not gay, never have been, Austin/Chris/whatever and I are friends, I am heterosexual. Thank you.

Until then...he's gay...even if my earlier post about wavering still applies. ;)

The two had never worked together before but knew of each other's work. Gyllenhaal had watched O'Byrne onstage in "Doubt" and "The Coast of Utopia" and on TV in "Mildred Pierce." O'Byrne was a fan of "Brokeback Mountain" and "Donnie Darko." Now they share a dressing room.

*cough*

Anonymous said...

O'Byrne responds with a mock insult - "He's a one-trick pony, beard or no beard" - and makes fun of Gyllenhaal's luscious head of hair. "Look at that hair! I mean, have you ever seen anything like it? I could eat it."

No, they aren't talking about the play :)

Anonymous said...

"To have a first is a really wonderful thing. And to have a first with someone who is so wise and experienced is a blessing," says Gyllenhaal of O'Byrne.

Still talking about the play....

Anonymous said...

He was in London for one day in February when his agent suggested he go that night to see "Constellations," another of Payne's plays. Gyllenhaal did, loved it - "it was so precise, so sharp" - and the next morning managed to have breakfast with the playwright. Within a month, the revival of "If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet" was set up.

So before Berlin film festival with Austin, Jake was eager to work in New York, far, far, away from his "husband".

Anonymous said...

He heard the script was being sent to O'Byrne and crossed his fingers the older actor would agree. "As soon as I heard he was going to do it, I was so excited," Gyllenhaal says.

"It's been a really wonderful thing to have Brian there to be able to guide us. Not only in scenes. Not only as a tremendous actor. But as somebody who I can turn to and say, 'Is this supposed to happen?' And he'll go, 'Yes, it's supposed to happen. And later it will be like this.'"

They've also since learned that the first show each saw on Broadway was the same - "Anything Goes" with Patti LuPone in the late 1980s. ("I, by the way, was 8; he was 40," Gyllenhaal jokes.) And they have learned that they are both actors who revel in the reality of scenes.

"He listens to my rants and he guides me and calms me down and also jacks me up," says Gyllenhaal. "It feels safe even within the danger of the moment."

They are meant to be!!!

What a bad bad hubby!

First rreviews from the play said...

It’s clear that Nick Payne has a keen understanding of the minefield that is the human heart. His “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” offers a rigorously unsentimental yet deeply empathetic portrait of a loving family in crisis. Director Michael Longhurst’s inventive abstract staging supports Payne beautifully, and the terrific Jake Gyllenhaal, sporting a flawless working-class regional English accent in his American stage debut, eschews a star turn to take his place in a top-flight four-person ensemble. It all makes for a riveting evening of theater.

http://www.backstage.com/review/ny-theater/off-broadway/if-there-i-havent-found-it-yet-roundabout-jake-gyllenhaal/

Funke’s emotional nakedness and Gyllenhaal’s warmth and immediacy make their scenes together the production’s best. But none of the four actors onstage is consistently able to mine the wry humor beneath the domestic discomfort.
Terry is the kind of unapologetic screwup role that actors love, allowing for a lot of shuffling physicality as well as the accent, attitude and profanity-laced dialogue of an eternal lad. Gyllenhaal spends most of his stage time shifting back and forth on his feet, twitching nervously or raking his hair, his arms in near constant motion. The performance is still a little too studied, suggesting that the actor needs to relax into it. But there’s a sense of damaged vulnerability there that gives him a natural allegiance with Anna. However, when Terry exits, the play fizzles.

Looks like First reviews about Jake's performance in the play are very good.

No wonder Anna loves her bad-boy uncle, as do we all. They speak the same language because they feel the same pain. In Gyllenhaal's wonderfully manic, crazy-like-a-fox perf, it's fairly obvious that Terry, no less than Anna, is one of those endangered species being pushed off the edge of the planet. Unless, of course, they manage to spit out the indigestible garbage that people like George keep trying to shove down their throats. ...

Variety

No amount of slosh can dampen Jake Gyllenhaal’s U.S. stage debut as a foul-mouth prodigal who wreaks havoc on his brother’s troubled home. It’s a free-wheeling performance of high comic energy and rude bombast unmatched since Mark Rylance masticated the scenery in another British import, “Jerusalem.”

bloomberg news

Anna's uncle Terry is played with zeal by Jake Gyllenhaal, extremely effective in his New York stage debut. George's charming but aimless younger brother bursts in on the family after a few years away. Gyllenhaal crackles with self-loathing and anger, as Terry hopes to mend a romance he destroyed. Terry takes a kindly interest in Anna and their friendship blossoms, but then he gets bogged down in typical poor decision-making, leaving Anna more despondent than before. ...

Fake, fake, fake!
Only tweets about Jake in Texas and Jake's kids aren't fake!

You are welcome:)

some others

Gyllenhaal is terrific and ideally cast as Terry, playing the young man as an adult male version of Anna who's never been able to completely abandon his own insecurities. Nervous tics abound (he cannot keep his legs still, whether standing or sitting), and the swaggering confidence he displays is always undercut by the apparent belief that nothing about him is good enough to accept as is. It's a detailed, charismatic performance of exactly appropriate theatrical size, something not all movie stars prove capable of when treading the New York boards — his is an extremely impressive debut.

talkin Broadway

If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” is a small ensemble play getting a big profile boost from Jake Gyllenhaal.

Happily, the “Brokeback Mountain” Oscar nominee shows off sturdy stage chops in his New York theater debut.

He’s touching, funny and completely convincing as Uncle Terry, a scruffy man-boy chronically adrift, profane, bad with boundaries, but with a good heart. In short, Terry is far from perfect but likable.

The same goes for this 90-minute one-act by British playwright Nick Payne, an up-and-comer who puts his own spin on the popular topic of family dysfunction and durability.

NY Daily News

Nick Payne’s family drama has garnered a lot of attention because it marks Jake Gyllenhaal’s New York theater debut. Spoiler alert: He and his English accent are perfectly fine. ...

Into this unhappy household comes George’s younger brother, the slackerish Terry (Gyllenhaal), who warms to his unhappy niece. Broody in a young James Dean kind of way — he rakes his hand through his hair a lot — Gyllenhaal has an appealing, fumbling romanticism.

He and O’Byrne also have a convincing relationship as estranged siblings with a shared inability to communicate with loved ones. ...

So Austin is in Texas far far away from his Hubby Jake "the great actor ever" Gyllenhaal mmmm.

5:23 AM - why are you obsessed with WFT2?
Shouldn't you write fiction about Austin attending Jake's premiere in New York?

So far Jake has every right to be happy with his choices and work done in EOW and "If There Is I Haven't Found It". Now all he needs is good box office and being noticed during award season to celebrate 2012 as great year in his career :)

Anonymous said...

I agree with you, Jake has done well to change agency and to take one year of stop for think and "reconstruct"
his career.
Fingers crossed:)!

I’m so happy to read all the positive reviews about Jake’s theatre performance. He’s just on a roll atm.

I thought the interview with Kelly and Michael was quite entertaining. IMO he always does quite well on that show – and he pretty much always gets asked about family, marriage and kids (previously by Regis). I guess it’s their automatic go-to-topic.

@New. I completely agree about the Time to Dance video. I thought Jake was just phenomenal in that. It really showed off a different side of his talents and the range he has as an actor. I would be much more excited to see him in a darker role than in a romantic comedy (but then I’m not a big fan of rom-coms in general, I think the good ones are few and far between).

There is an interview from TIFF where Jake discusses Brokeback Mountain (it’s for a gay website). I don’t think he reveals much new information but thought I’d share here in case anyone was interested:

Hi Post, I think Jake was outstanding in that video,it almost seems that all realize now of what great actor Jake is.

Anonymous said...

Funny how OMGs have suddenly stopped talking about BTz anymore as if they never believed it in the first place.

They better start discussing them ASAP becuse everything else = defeat.

After years of bullshiting and lies about Jake&Austin&BTs, Special K and OMG can't go back to just Jake&Austin.

No NY,no End of Watch, Just Watch the space shuttle!

SK already has a bullshit excuse for that...

Speaking of stops - Austin tweeted a picture of the shuttle flying over LA today. So the question is, is Cali his latest stop or is it just a little more Rowdy and friends adding to duck duck Goose cover and he's on the other coast (as in East).

What a crock!
