How To Spot Publicity Whores?

Caught in the Act!

How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.

Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article, March 4, 2006:

A delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.

It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.

Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.

The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.

When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.

Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says. Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.

The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts.

Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.

"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."

Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side.

The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.

The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yรฉle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.

Ms. Jolie then let Yรฉle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' "

By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.

In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

I think that you can't see local time when Tweet was posted. You can see location only if Twitter user activated that option - Austin didn't.

No, I am in Italy and I have read very well the schedule 9:51PM obviously not the same time as Italy , first it was as you say now is changed, it marks the time of the person that is twitting

I am in Italy and up to some days ago the schedule it was that of my country, that is, if from you they were the 6 of the afternoon, from me it was midnight, and twitter marked midnight even if the tweet came from NY, from a couple of days is changed. and I see the time of the person that is twitting,n the tweet of Austin I clearly see 9.51 pm, clearly it is not the time of my country, making the account of how many times had passed by the tweet to the time that I saw marked clear that it was the time of Los Angeles.

I'm not sure what is default time showed by Twitter (9:51 PM), can't find info about that, but I know for sure that Twitter users don't see 9:51 PM, they see their local time when tweet was posted.

10:43 AM it is not a default, it is so now, and in all the tweets, not just that of Austin,I has noticed it the other day, when I have brought here a twitter of a girl in NY that has seen Jake in a restaurant, I was ready to make the calculation of the time, when I have realized that the tweet exactly marked the time of NY, 12:30 around, in my country they were the 6.30, from a couple of days it is this way

Sorry, I've just checked tweets from someone who lives in New York and default tweet time (when I'm not signed as Twitter user) is LA time, not NYC time.

So default tweet time isn't local time of posting a tweet, it is Twitter default time zone time.

Anonymous said...

Sorry but To me it appears, from NY the time of NY, from Los Ageles the time of Los Angeles, any doubt.

Twitter user said...

Not true. One example:

No you are right, but I am right to see the time of Los Angeles in the tweet of Austin and the other day from the girl of the restaurant I have seen the time of NY.

have not I understood why is changed this way? What sense does it have?, first marking the local time had more sense,

Anonymous said...

Local time doesn't make more sense if you read tweets from around the World + same default time zone for all tweets makes is easier for Twitter to sort tweets by time in search results and timeline.

I don't agree that the songs are about Jake; how much heartbreak could a 21 year-old have experienced? And she only "dated" Jake for about a month? Not enough time for an album-ful of lyrics.

But, two people make up a relationship, so whoever it is about, she has every right to sing about her side of the story, and doesn't owe whoever she is writing about anything. Neither does he owe her anything.

October 20, 2012 7:49 PM

You're kinda contradicting yourself here. You say there wasn't enough time for an album full of lyrics about Jake (one month of dating in which they saw each other what...3 times?) but then you say she has a right to tell her side of the story. Well, considering her lyrics..what kinda story is that? The story the tabloids were trying to tell us? The ones about Jake calling her, giving her expensive presents, flying her to England, driving to her house from LA blabla.. Yeah, I don't think so.

I don't believe a word she's saying. I don't believe for a second that these two dated for real. One look at Jake's face in any of their photos together tells me everything I need to know. A freshly-in-love couple/dating couple does not look as bored and unhappy as these two/Jake.

IF they WERE real, then yes, she has a right to tell her story, however...she's being very immature and pathetic about it. Those lyrics suck.

Fresh from the Toronto Film Festival comes David Ayer's End Of Watch to the BFI's London Film Festival. It's an intense and gripping LA cop drama featuring Jake Gyllenhaal in his best role since Brokeback Mountain.

With its believable and arresting performances, Ayer has delivered an intense and moving drama that questions the meaning of being a hero. After all, our law enforcers are merely human after all.

5/5

Nev at 1:05 -

I agree with you there is a contradiction. I was speaking generally, that a person in a relationship has a right to their own experiences from it, not specifically talking about Taylor. Noone can ever know for sure what lyrics mean because we all bring our own interpretations to things through our own life's filters.

I think this is all just publicity and/or online tinhatting, because who knows who or what the inspiration for her album is. It is ludicrous to think that if the relationship was for publicity for both parties, which must happen all the time for promotion whether an artist is gay or straight, that someone would write songs about it. That's the contradiction.

Anonymous said...

Not contradiction in this case. Taylor Swift "dates" closeted celebrities to get publicity for her songs - she is boring, her songs are boring, "dating" celebrities and songs about her "relationships" is her way to get the press.

Thing is..she said in interviews (direct quotes) that her albums are about her relationships and she enjoys tearing into them like she does. (posted a link to one of those interviews a couple of days ago).

Noone can ever know for sure what lyrics mean because we all bring our own interpretations to things through our own life's filters.

Not in TayTay's case. Her lyrics are so childish and obvious, it's painful.

I think this is all just publicity and/or online tinhatting, because who knows who or what the inspiration for her album is. Some famous guy needs a girl on his arm..there's Tay Tay..set it up..give 1 month, maybe 3...she writes songs about it ... her fans buy the stuff, the guy's in the press and so is she. Win Win... unless you're Jake Gyllenhaal and it all blew up in your face and people ended up laughing at you.

See, I'm not so sure about that. Until the whole Jake fiasco I didn't know about her so I don't know but what was the general reaction to her and her weird dating habits before Jaylor?

He might have known about her writing songs (there was this apparent promise by her to him that she wouldn't write about him) but I don't think he anticipated how ridiculous she would make him look while they were still 'together'.

Anonymous said...

I never heard any of her songs but I knew.
Jake's PR knew about her "song writing".
I'm sure Jake knew too - you can bet he did Google search before they started "dating".
Promise? They weren't friends, "promise" is part of some tabloid fiction. If there wasn't anything in the contract then he knew what to expect.

Anonymous said...

I have only heard this latest song - when I heard the "like, ever" part - it's just not my cuppa.

There is another song where she speaks of bedroom and blue eyes, she was really fixed with him!

Anonymous said...

LMAO!!! Swift is pathetic bitch.

Anonymous said...

"Jake is OK with people laughing at him, he knew about Swift's tricks before agreeing to beard with her."

I don't think Jake so OK with people laughing at him. I think he and his people thought that a short term bearding relationship with Swift would have just given them both some PR, some tabloid covers and Jake some hetro creed. Most of Swift's other bearding set-ups didn't last longer than 5 or 6 months. I don't think that they anticipated the reaction that the pair got. First off they are so opposite and other than Swift's 16 year old fans, the consensus was that Jake looked creepy dating an apparent teenaged minded girl when he was almost 30 years old and even the tabloids wondered aloud if they were a real couple. The backlash was that people laughed at Jake and his sinking image sank. In fact after their "break-up" Jake laid pretty low for the rest of the year. The only good thing about the Swift fiasco is that it seems to have finally pushed Jake to dump his PR people and his agent. Hopefully he's sworn off the whole bearding game.

Nev said...

3.56 I don't think you really read what I wrote. I don't know if this 'promise' is true or not (clearly, if it was she's also a pathetic liar) but whatever it is, my original statement still stands: I think they knew of the song writing (how could they not) but I don't think they expected the finger pointing and laughing.

And yeah..what 4.56 said. :)

Anonymous said...

I don't think that they anticipated the reaction that the pair got.

Those who didn't see it coming are idiots, we were laughing our asses off from the first minute.

Anonymous said...

The best part was that everyone knew how Jake would never ever listen to Swift's singing (if you can call that singing)! LOL

Anonymous said...

There is no doubt Jake knows people are laughing at him. That is why Adam Levine blamed and lashed out at the Gay community in the Advocate. Jake also knows that a huge majority of adoring str8 woman have no clue he is Gay. Plus he is absolutely looking for str8 men to forget he ever had anything to do with Brokeback. Of course that is the reason he stayed a continent away from expressing any sadness over Heaths death till long after.

Tay song About Jake said...

I walked through the door with you
It was cold, but something 'bout it felt like home somehow and I
Left my scarf there at your sister's house
And you still got it in your drawer even now

Oh your sweet disposition
And my wide eyed gaze
We're singing in a car getting lost upstate
The Autumn leaves falling down like pieces in their place
And I can picture it after all these days
And I know it's long gone, and that magic´s not here no more
And it might be okay, but I'm not fine at all

Cause here we are again on that little town street
You almost ran the red cause you were looking over me
Wind in my air I was there I remember it all too well

Photo album on my counter
Your cheeks were turning red
You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin size bed
And your mother's telling stories 'bout you on the t-ball team
You tell me about your past thinking your future was me

And I know it's long gone, and there was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to

Cause here we are again in the middle of the night
We're dancing round the kitchen in the refrigerator light
Down the stairs I was there I remember it all too well

And maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece
´til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there I remember it all too well

Hey you called me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I'm a crumbled up piece of paper lying here
Cause I remember it all all all too well

Time won't fly it's like I'm paralyzed by it
I´d like to be my old self again
But I'm still trying to find it
After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone
But your keep my old scarf from that very first week
Cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me
You can't get rid of it, cause you remember it all too well yeah

Cause there we are again when I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing you've ever known
It was where, I was there, I remember it all too well

Wind in my air you were there you remember it all
Down the stairs you were there you remember it all
It was where, I was there I remember it all too well

Taylor Swift Is An Evil And Cruel Torturer

^^^

Taylor Swift missed her calling. Taylor should've been a torturer at Guantanamo Bay, because bitch knows how to put the pain on a grown man and leave him screaming for a rusty razor so he can murder his ears. Taylor's newest assault on ears "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" is supposedly about Jake Gyllenhaal, and she tells USA Today (via WOW Report) that she wrote that Pee Chee folder poem of a song as an act of revenge against her ex. Taylor's ex hates the kind of music she makes, so she purposefully wrote a bubble gum shit song that would get tons of play and torture him everywhere he went.

"He made me feel like I wasn't as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to. So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy when he heard it on the radio. Not only would it hopefully be played a lot, so that he'd have to hear it, but it's the opposite of the kind of music that he was trying to make me feel inferior to."

And when USA Today asked her why would she want to torment someone, she said, "Because that's fun."

Taylor is The Bad Seed of music. She looks like an Anne of Green Gables extra, all sweet and farm-like and shit, but she'll viciously murder you in the face. Crazy bitch. When normal people want to get back at an ex-boyfriend, they do sane stuff like key the words "I Have Gonorrhea" into his car or stalk him so much that he has to move to a different state. That's what normal people do. But Taylor has to get back at an ex by writing a song that will eventually play EVERYWHERE. So Taylor is not only torturing her ex piece, she's torturing EVERYONE.

If you don't believe that Taylor has the power to destroy men through her music. Just look at Wilford Brimley in the picture above. That's the face of a man who was just brutally tortured by being forced to listen to Taylor's album on the car ride over to Good Morning America.

All the time that Jake spent laying low so people would forget he attempted to beard with Taylor Swift has gone out the window. All of her songs that are about Jake is bascially a rehash of what was written in the tabloids about their romance. Anyone could have read those stories and written the same songs about their tragic love affair (gag). All this attention to her songs has reminded everyone what an idiot Jake was to associate with her. He has quietly been putting his career and image back together and Ms. Swift has blown it for him. In a way he deserves it for not using any common sense and agreeing to beard with her in the first place. Karma always comes back to bite you in the ass.

Anonymous said...

Jake should just keep working - Swift's songs will be forgotten in few months, and with a bit of luck serious media will staw away from the "romance" during Jake's promotions.

Jake Gyllenhaal is one movie star who belongs on stage

When movie or TV stars decide to appear on the New York stage, it’s a high risk proposition.

The eight-times-a-week exposure is flagrant, and if you’re not up to the rigors of stage acting, bad reviews and bad word of mouth can be a prolonged PR disaster.

It is doubtful that anyone who saw Julia Roberts in the 2006 production of “Three Days of Rain,” for instance, carries a vivid memory of what she did in that Richard Greenberg play.

The radiant star of “Pretty Woman” looked like a rank amateur on stage. Theatergoers who fought to get tickets before the play opened were so disappointed by what happened on stage that they could be seen leaving the theater in droves during the intermission.

A decade earlier when Jessica Lange decided — at the height of her film career — to make her stage debut as Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire” the performance was strong if you sat in the first 10 rows of the orchestra but inaudible elsewhere (through a fluke, I saw the show twice, and only enjoyed it when I was sitting very close to the stage).

Lange returned to Broadway in another Tennessee Williams classic — “The Glass Menagerie” — and while her vocal projection was considerably improved, the performance was still too small for the space.
Both Lange and Roberts displayed hubris by going directly to the big leagues — Broadway — rather than start in a small off-Broadway house and then work their way up.

Another movie star, Jake Gyllenhaal, is now making a memorable New York stage debut in the Roundabout Theatre’s production of Nick Payne’s “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” which has just had its limited run extended by two weeks (to Dec. 23) due to the good reviews and strong ticket sales.

Gyllenhaal has only acted on stage once before — ten years ago in a London production — but he looks and sounds like someone who is completely at home there. He has the chops.

The film star was smart to choose an ensemble piece staged in Roundabout’s smallish off-Broadway venue, the Laura Pels Theatre, but there wasn’t a false note in Gyllenhaal’s performance and he meshed perfectly with his co-stars.

Payne’s play is a four-character domestic drama about a British family dealing with marital infidelity and the daughter’s bullying at school. Stage veteran Brian F. O’Byrne plays the environmentalist dad, George; Michelle Gomez plays his wife Fiona; and the striking young actress Annie Funke is their overweight and angry teen daughter Anna.

Gyllenhaal is George’s younger brother, Terry, who has been aimlessly wandering the globe before the play’s start. Terry’s unexpected return adds stress to the family’s situation but also helps Anna because her uncle is a sympathetic
misfit just like her.

It’s a slight play that has been given a bizarre, over-elaborate staging that sometimes dwarfs the story — at one point, the stage is flooded with several inches of water for no clear dramatic purpose, and there is a long pool of water at the foot of the stage into which the characters toss furniture and props at the end of each scene.

But, the human elements in “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” remain strong and Gyllenhaal is so appealing and troubling as Terry that I left the theater Thursday night hoping it wouldn’t be another ten years before the actor hit the stage. He belongs there.

That's all nice and dandy, but no one will work his ass off on the stage if he can make 10 or 20 times more $$$ for a movie.

Anonymous said...

it is a long discourse and me I don't have the worthy linguistic ownership to face it.

first of all I have to say that cinema and my greatest passion and that I have left the studies of law (with big sorrow of my parents) to study cinemaand figurative art.
I have ended this summer. .
I don't know how muchJake is interested in the art, I know that he has produced quite a lot of it, and that unlike many, he is able to do it, for me the point is that's all, George Clooney puts us the whole passion and time, but with all hisr job,He don'tworth a Joaquin P 's finger, o a Ddaniel D L's hair, they make a movie every death of Pope, but when they do it the world it realizes, for me Jake is in this category he is able to produce art. I hope that the discourse is clear enough I apologize in advance for the errors and confusion.

Uh..I don't know. Think I'd be very happy just to see him. *sigh*

Anonymous said...

Yes, Jake did some movie producing but we have no idea what that involved - it could be that Jake only invested some money in the movie.

No other interest in art as far as we know beside acting, obviously, and attending concerts and hanging out with musicians.

Jake did one play at the beginning of his career and now when his career needs reboot - I think that is very telling.

for me to produce art doesn't mean to finance it, that they make it the magnates not the artists, Jake it is that type of actor that can make a performance a peace of art for me difference is here , there are actors that breaks the BO and they are super paid but they can't to produce nothing of really artistic, Jakey can make 4 horrendous films in a row , but all of sudden He come aut with a movie like EOW, and everybody have to recognize his talent and his art, Is true that sometime he issuperficial and he wants to be a super star more than an artist, but he always has the possibility to do something of autstanding, others actors can just dream this quality.

I am so worried that if Mitt Romney wins the election the progress that the Gay community has made in the last 4 years could come to an end. The Matthew Sheppard Hate Crimes Bill was passed. Dont Ask Dont Tell has become a thing of the past. The President of the USA for the first time came out and said it supported Gay marriage and would no longer defend DOMA. This is huge progress. Obama got off to a slow start but in 4 years he did deliver. Please friends cast your vote to reelect President Obama and ask your family and friends to do the same. Thank you.
