How To Spot Publicity Whores?

Caught in the Act!

How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.

Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article, March 4, 2006:

A delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.

It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.

Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.

The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.

When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.

Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says. Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.

The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts.

Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.

"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."

Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side.

The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.

The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yéle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.

Ms. Jolie then let Yéle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' "

By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.

In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

Michael: It's weird to say that. I've starred in other movies: "Shooter" and "World Trade Center." But ("World Trade Center") was multiple storylines at one time. I'm in almost every scene and frame (in "End of Watch"). I have just as much screen time as Jake Gyllenhaal. He's a huge star. I have to thank Jake for that. It's crazy to share screen time with someone like that and not be a huge star. My hat goes off to him."

Perez Reviews: If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet said...

We applaud Jake Gyllenhaal for choosing to star in a play in New York and making his off-Broadway debut in If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet at the Roundabout Theater Company.

BUT….

We have to seriously question his judgement! Why did he decide to star in this play? He could have his choice of Broadway or off-Broadway material, yet Gyllenhaal chose and obtuse and languid talker about climate change and teen bullying.

Maybe those two issues are really close to his heart, but his brain should have picked a better vehicle for his considerable talents!

Gyllenhaal gives a dynamic, endearing and masterful performance in the play, which is superfluously set in modern-day England. Jake does deliver a more than credible - truly incredible - British accent, but it would have served the production better if the play was set in America for its New York debut.

In addition to Gyllenhaal's terrific performance, the scenic design and staging for If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet are both truly great. The other actors are fine enough.

Yet despite all that, the show is pretty unbearable! Nick Payne's interweaving stories and dramatic storytelling lacked the skill and punch that we saw recently in Grace.

Shame.

Taylor Swift Loves Getting Revenge Through Music (+VIDEO)

^^^

Taylor Swift, dubbed the "Heart Break Kid" by Rolling Stone magazine, is admitting that she does get joy out of her exes' pain. No one can quite get through a breakup like Swift - that is if #1 hits and multi-million dollar deals help heal a broken heart. Since her debut on the music scene the singer has been an open book about her love - lost and gained. Now, Swift is out for blood with her new album "Red," which features sharp cutting and truthful lyrics about her celebrity exes.

The 22-year-old says writing a song about the guy that broke your hear is "fun." In an interview with USA Today, Swift says her hit single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," was written to tick off a particular ex who belittled her music. The blonde starlet says the song is a "definitive portrait of how I felt when I finally stopped caring what my ex thought of me."
The hit single helped redeemed the country pop star. According to Swift, the ex (assumed by many to be Jake Gyllenhaal, 31) made her "feel like I wasn't as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to."
"So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy when he heard it on the radio. Not only would it hopefully be played a lot, so that he'd have to hear it, but it's the opposite of the kind of music that he was trying to make me feel inferior to."
So why would Swift want to torment her old flame through the airwaves? "Because that's fun," Swift confessed.

[...]

"I'm excited about telling the beginnings of stories, like the story of this song called 'Ours,' where I wrote it about this guy nobody thought I should be with," Swift told VH1 News just before the taping. "So I wrote this song specifically just to play it for him, just to show him, 'I don't care what anyone says. I don't care that you have tattoos. I don't care that you have a gap between your teeth. I love you for who you are.' And that song ended up actually making it on a record [Speak Now] and becoming a #1 song. And then you take me being mad at my parents because they didn't want me to date this dude when I was 17, and I threw a fit and ran to my room and wrote a song on my bedroom floor called 'Love Story.' So that turned into something that I never expected to be our first #1 worldwide hit."
"Songs happen in really weird, strange, quirky ways, and to explore the start of them, where they were first brought into the world, where you first got that first little idea, it's wonderful to get to share that with a crowd of 3,000 people," Swift added.

DOMA Ruled Unconstitutional By Federal Appeals Court In New York

^^^

NEW YORK -- A divided federal appeals court in Manhattan struck down the Defense of Marriage Act Thursday as unconstitutional, joining an appeals court in Boston in rejecting the law that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The Supreme Court is expected to take up the case in the next year.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued its 2-to-1 ruling only weeks after hearing arguments on a lower court judge's findings that the 1996 law was unconstitutional.

The majority opinion written by Judge Dennis Jacobs rejected a section of the law that says "marriage" only means a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife and that the word "spouse" refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife. A federal appeals court in Boston earlier this year also found it unconstitutional.

The issue is expected to be decided by the Supreme Court. The decision came less than a month after the court heard arguments on Sept. 27.

Lawyer Paul Clement, who had argued in support of the law on behalf of the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group of the House of Representatives, was traveling and did not immediately return a message for comment.

James Esseks, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, called the ruling "a watershed moment in the legal movement for lesbian and gay rights."

"It's fabulous news for same-sex couples in New York and other states," he said.

Esseks said the 2nd Circuit went farther than the appeals court in Boston by saying that when the government discriminates against gay people, the courts will presume that the discrimination is unconstitutional.

In striking down the law, the Jacobs wrote that the law's "classification of same-sex spouses was not substantially related to an important government interest" and thus violated the equal protection clause of the Constitution.

He said the law was written so broadly that it touches more than a thousand federal laws. He said "homosexuals are not in a position to adequately protect themselves from the discriminatory wishes of the majoritarian public."

He rejected arguments that the definition of marriage was traditional.

"Even if preserving tradition were in itself an important goal, DOMA is not a means to achieve it," he said.

Judge Chester Straub dissented, saying that if the government was to change its understanding of marriage, "I believe it is for the American people to do so."

"Courts should not intervene where there is a robust political debate because doing so poisons the political well, imposing a destructive anti-majoritarian constitutional ruling on a vigorous debate," he said.

The ruling came in a case brought by Edith Windsor. She sued the government in November 2010 because she was told to pay $363,053 in federal estate tax after her partner of 44 years, Thea Spyer, died in 2009. They had married in Canada in 2007.

The law, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and affirms the right of states to refuse to recognize such marriages, was passed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton after it appeared in 1993 that Hawaii might legalize gay marriage. Since then, many states have banned gay marriage but several have approved it, including Massachusetts and New York.

Drudge, Tagg Romney Fall for Fake Mitt Romney Endorsement from Fake Jake Gyllenhaal said...

When outspokenly liberal actor Jake Gyllenhaal suddenly announced on Twitter that he was endorsing Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, it raised digital eyebrows across the web.

As well it should have: The endorsement was made on an unverified fan account (which was clearly identified as such) with around 10,000 followers. (The account has since been suspended.)

But for many on the right, the fact that "Jake Gyllenhaal" was spelled correctly was enough to shout the endorsement from the rooftops.

And so they did: Within seconds, the announcement hit prime real estate on the Drudge Report, possibly causing Twitter to crash.

Mitt Romney's son Tagg was also among the credulous, retweeting the fake endorsement before deleting it and apologizing for "jumping the gun."

Deadline reached out to Gyllenhaal's rep who informed them that the actor has never had a Twitter account.

Sorry GOP. But hey — you still have Lindsay Lohan and Stacey Dash.

In early October 2010, Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan promulgated the observance of a new commemoration called Spirit Day, the first observance of which took place on October 20, 2010, in which people wear the color purple to show support for LGBT young people who are victims of bullying. Promoted by GLAAD, many Hollywood celebrities wore purple on this day to show their support of this cause, and many websites added a prominent purple shade to their design.

The name, Spirit Day comes from the purple stripe of the Rainbow Flag, defined by Gilbert Baker, creator of that flag, as 'representing "spirit"'.

The idea of a bromance is deftly balanced here, as both Gyllenhaal and Peña offer a likeable, strong chemistry. The quality of the actors allows the poignant moments to hit hard, but succeeds when witty banter ensues, too. It's clear that a lot of the scenes were improvised: this convinces due to the whimsy dialogue retaining interest as the comradeship strengthens, and also because it appears utterly authentic.

Ayer's visualisation is, at times, disorientating and a little fractured, but that is surely his intention. 'End of Watch' thrills, entertains, amuses and emotionally grips until its final shot. It's a powerful drama with big names filmed in superbly gritty locations, and is proof that you don't need to spend a fortune to create a great film (a mere $7m it's estimate budget). David Ayer tonally creates something in keeping with previous works 'Training Day' and 'Harsh Times', but offers a little more poignancy and heartfelt engagement here, whilst retaining the same levels of shockingly realistic action, and themes of brotherhood, loyalty and sacrifice.

Is it difficult keeping the two conflicting personalities separate when you're chatting with all the regular Jake tweeters? I notice you've never once talked about the BTs or Austin with them. Why is that? What's your game?

That hypocrit needs to be exposed for what she is. And Mermon, Sasha and the rest need to know who they're talking to.

I follow some gossip stuff on Twitter. Compact and easy to get to ;)

I did that for a while (I'm on Twitter all the time).
But learning more about celebrities and how they think turned out to be a bad idea, I've lost all respect for many, like Adam Lambert, for example. And then I can't fully enjoy their movies or music, so I've stopped.

Jake not having Twitter account could be a blessing, LOL :)

Nev said...

Oh that is true. I know I said otherwise at one point but I came to the realization that I'd rather he stay away from all of this.

At this point I still enjoy reading the gossip headlines which mostly make me laugh.

Tyler Perry and Jake Gyllenhaal both starring in "Action" movies this year is proof that the gay community is moving closer to equality.

Anonymous said...

It is more probable than it snows to the hell I guess:)

However it seemed that Will Smith was about to come out.

Anonymous said...

What?!? When?!? Who said that?!?

Anonymous said...

This summer or spring, don't exactly remember, there were quite a lot articles and rumors, that said, that Will was in a trip for the world with his male lover of long time, and that Jada was desperate and she would have do anything to get back her man.

Anonymous said...

If they suggested that Will is/was her man then they are ignorant about Will :)

Anonymous said...

The articles said that it was a declaration of Jada and her it also said that what was the truth of their relationship, only their two knew.....
a declaration that say a lòt to me:)

Just watched "Howl'. Now, it's not something I'd normally watch but I seem to have an odd fascination with the whole Beat-scene, especially Jack Kerouac. Have read On the Road, Big Sur and tried The Subterraneans but gave up. I barely understand a word but it's still amazing to read.

Anyway...thought Howl was good. Am gonna buy and read Howl now, sounded real interesting. Thought Franco was good, haven't seen him in anything else so can't compare.

My favourite scene? Guess.. ;p the one of him and Peter. :)

I personally do believe that many of the songs are indeed aimed at Jake. I think it’s pretty obvious in a lot of them, though I still fail to see what he did to warrant this kind of bullying! He doesn’t even sound like a horrible guy in her lyrics – he just ended it, which is apparently a horrible crime that deserves public humiliation and a total breach of his privacy.

I really don’t get her popularity at all. IMO her songs are mediocre at best and her personality seems fake and obnoxious. These “coy” and barely hidden clues and attacks just make her sound awfully immature, untrustworthy and vindictive. All her exes must be breathing sighs of relief they escaped that craziness.

Anonymous said...

he just ended it

Yes, Jake was probably the one who ended the bearding arrangement - there was no relationship.
Just like there was no relationship with Taylor Lautner.
Or ...
Taylor Swift is just after publicity and material for shitty songs - nothing to do with reality or her "relationships".

Anonymous said...

I don't agree that the songs are about Jake; how much heartbreak could a 21 year-old have experienced? And she only "dated" Jake for about a month? Not enough time for an album-ful of lyrics.

But, two people make up a relationship, so whoever it is about, she has every right to sing about her side of the story, and doesn't owe whoever she is writing about anything. Neither does he owe her anything.

Anonymous said...

If indeed Jake has broken up with her through SMS, she is all the rights to be furious and vengeful!

Anonymous said...

Most artists' work is autobiographical in some way and reflects their life experiences, so I wouldn't be too hard on her.

Anonymous said...

But, two people make up a relationship, so whoever it is about, she has every right to sing about her side of the story

There was no relationship.
Taylor Swift is pathetic liar and just another publicity whore.

Anonymous said...

I like the song,it is catchy and nice, surely she is not very reserved, however she has the right to tell her version of the relationship.

Anonymous said...

It reminds me of when Carly Simon was singing You're So Vain, and everybody thought it was about Mick Jagger. Was it about Mick Jagger? :)

Anonymous said...

There was no relationship. PR arrangement is not relationship.

Anonymous said...

Carly Simon was singing You're So Vain

"The song, which was rumored for years to be about one of her ex-boyfriends (like Warren Beatty or Mick Jagger), was actually written about gay record label boss David Geffen."

Anonymous said...

What a song You'r so Vain,I thoughtt was about David Bowie.

Anonymous said...

In T. Swift's mind, a guy could take a quick glance at her and that would mean they will be engaged. Album of love to follow....

Anonymous said...

Ha! :)

Anonymous said...

If I were singing a song about my ex, he'd probably sue for royalties. :(

Anonymous said...

However she says that Jake constantly despised her for her music, cuz he likes Hpster music.

It's not very nice if your boyfriend continually tells you that your job sucks.

Anonymous said...

No it isn't, so maybe she gave him the boot?

Anonymous said...

No, looks like Jake ended the relationship cuz he need space and he was ashamed about Her.

Anonymous said...

It's almost as ludicrous as Jake's having several kids.

Anonymous said...

BTW,If for two months of dates Taylor can make all this noise, I don't want to think about the man that will marry her!

As soon as he forgets to lower the toilet seat , immediately comes the song, "You will never never never back in this bathroom whatever"!

Florida Tom said...

Yes 8:52 AM, we are nervous because Austin was just 3 days in New York. Music festivals are much more important than being with your kids!

Anonymous said...

OMG say that on October 17 is the birthday of the BT, and in such a private family moment Austin would go to a some Music Festival?

Anonymous said...

Yes, of all things to be nervous about in the world today, the thing I am most nervous about is the hidden children of a B list actor and his Z list husband. How do I survive???

8:56 AM said...

Music festival = Austin City Limits Music Festival, Oct 12 – 14, 2012. Austin, Texas

Anonymous said...

You say that Jake was in Austin TX, Friday and Sunday to celebrate the birthday
but Jake was in NY on October 17 for the play and a Q&A for EOW, Oscar time you know?

Anonymous said...

I'm saying that Austin left New York on Friday, Oct 12 or earlier to attend music festival in Austin, Texas.
Since parties are more important than "husband and kids" I'm sure Austin didn't go back to New York after festival, he's in Austin, TX or LA.

I think that you can't see local time when Tweet was posted. You can see location only if Twitter user activated that option - Austin didn't.
