Prince of Persia

Jake Gyllenhaal
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Mike Newell:

'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'

Sir Ben Kingsley:

'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

Adam Lambert, Queerty comment:

It's one thing to not want to represent a group, but it's another thing entirely to not want to help fight for LGBT civil rights and equality as an LGBT person, and it doesn't appear that Adam addressed this specifically in his quote above.

As long as we are not equal, we should be fighting to get equal. Anything less is a direct compromise on our citizenship in America.

Isabel using Jake for PR? If that was the case she would have not gone on record to deny any dating rumors.

What else can she say or do when dating rumor was just PR fiction?

His phony laughing reminded me of when he was asked about Reese in the beggining, he laughed one time and said hilarious the next time and you know what happened after that.

Laughing is the best answer to that question.
I remember when Jake said "hilarious", but don't get what "happened after that"?

Anonymous said...

Or maybe he laughs because it's non of the papz business (his private life that is).

Wait a minute, someone thinks that Jake should have answered that paparazzi question?

LOL. He didn't seem to feel that way when he used the papz for his phony Reese photo ops. But, hey, that's what they all do.

Jake's "laughed one time and said hilarious" was during reeke, not before official reeke.

I'm not saying he should have answered the question. I don't think he should have. But I think the laugh could be interpreted lots of different ways - which is exactly what he intends. Jake is extremely press savvy and like most celebs uses the papz and press when it suits him.

Dear Ted:
Did you see Zac Efron's reaction when the Kiss Cam on MTV Movie Award zoomed in on him and Nessa? He was so reluctant to kiss her. His own girlfriend! The other couples who got the Kiss Cam didn't seem to have the same problem (even Russell Brand and Jonah Hill!). Nessa puckered her lips waiting for Zac to kiss her back, but he was just "bumping" his lips against her. It was not even a peck. What do you think about this?
—Alice

Dear Friggin' Uncomfortable:
What are you talking about, Alice? Didn't you see the passion! The desire! OK, totally agree the moment was holy-crap awkward, which might be one of the reasons Zac was so quick to clam up. No one wants to be first on the Kiss Cam, everyone knows that.

Dear Ted:
For the Blind Vices who are in the closet and have children, do the kids know their parent is gay? How do they handle knowing their parents' marriage is a sham? Also, how do they keep it secret? Children usually aren't the best secret keepers; it might be easy to blurt it out at school.
—Michelle

Dear Think About It:
Same way nonceleb (closeted) gay parents often treat their kids: silence.

Dear Ted:
You recently stated that Toothy was still beardless, but what about Grey Goose? Is he currently making the rounds with a beard?
—Mandy

Dear Crafty Query:
Yes.

Dear Ted:
Out of Grey Goose, Dashed Dingle-Dream and Barrington Bang-Me, who is the most famous, who is the cutest and who is the most chill?
—TB

Dear Three's Company:
Fame-wise, depends who'd you ask. Probably G2 right now. Otherwise, D3 is the cutest and BBM seems the most chill—though pretty close on all accounts.

Bitch-Back! Way to Diss the Kiss Cam, Zac!

BREAKING NEWS: Leopard vomits all over Will Smith's daughter

Willow Smith played dress-up at the "The Karate Kid" premiere: The 9-year-old actress looked twice her age as she accompanied her family down the red carpet.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith's daughter went head-to-toe leopard print in an ensemble that channeled the edgy style of pop superstar Rihanna. She finished off the outfit with knee-high boots, big sunglasses, a chain necklace and a soaring pompadour.

Willow and her parents attended the premiere to support 11-year-old Jaden Smith, who stars in the kid-friendly martial arts film. According to costar Jackie Chan, Jaden shares some things with onscreen character. "Jaden's a good kid, [but] he's always bullied by his sister," Chan confessed to People about the pompadoured petite.
Dr. Facilier in 'The Princess and the Frog'

This is not the first time little Willow has mimicked Rihanna's bold style. Last December, she appeared at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert with a side-swept and partially shaved 'do that mirrored the "Disturbia" singer's coif almost exactly.

Willow isn't the only Hollywood youngster garnering attention with her aged-up looks -- Madonna's daughter Lourdes graced the cover of Europe's Quality Magazine this month. Although she looks beautiful and sophisticated, there's speculation as to whether the 13-year-old knowingly posed for the photo.
Willow, on the other hand, seems to thoroughly own her red carpet makeover -- she even brought out a second look for the party after the premiere.

How simple. No Bomer deserves to be admired. But Destiny is using that to promote her cause, I doubt she cares a whit about Matt Bomer really. There was another actor she did the same thing for, I forget who now. She's not the having a crush type - she's disdained and made fun of fangurlism since the original WFT.

Anonymous said...

But Destiny is using that to promote her cause, I doubt she cares a whit about Matt Bomer really.

What cause is that?

Anonymous said...

If she really were a fan of Matt Bomer's, she wouldn't cross post her "adoration" only on Jake sites.

Anonymous said...

Being a fan doesn't even matter because supporting Bomer can't be bad or problematic.

Anonymous said...

No, but the sincerity is questionable.

Anonymous said...

Why would Destiny post about Matt if she doesn't like and admire him? What's the cunning plan behind her posting?

destiny said...

You just can't stop, can you trolly.

There was no other actor that I have gone on about like Bomer, aside from Jake and Austin in the early days.

I often cross-post on OMG and WFT2, if I think it would be of interest to people on both sites.

I do make digs at fangirls because there are several kinds and or it means several different things. In its positive aspects, it means that actor, singer, etc. that can just melt your heart and make you weak in the knees.

But some fangirls take that adoration too far, and never ever question what their idol does, and truly thinks on some level they might have a chance with him some day, and then they start hurling around the word "hater" when you suggest someone might be gay.

And sadly, I haven't found a place to talk about Bomer other than here. Because you know what, the person who runs MattBomerfan doesn't allow any talk about his sexuality or, rather, she uses that old hoary code word "private life".

Miley Cyrus Would Rather Date Her Better-Dressed Gay Best Friend said...

Faux lesbian Miley Cyrus isn't throwing down the gay towel just yet. Let her talk about how hot her best gay friend is, won't you?

He's so hot, she tells Graham Norton, that she'd rather date him than her current boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. Like OMG: Hemsworth's "taste is a little odd. I have a problem with people that wear board shorts when they're not going to the beach. He's constantly in surf trunks. I'm like, I don't walk around in a bikini! As much as you wish I would, I don't go out in a bikini all the time. He just wears trunks all the time. My best friend is gay, which doesn't help 'cause he's always decked out really hot. Then I see my boyfriend and I'm just like, I kinda want that one (gay friend)! Even though you don't like me, I really like you! He's way cuter and way more fun and wants to do everything I want to do, so that's the difference. … Me and my best friend, we walk around town, and people give us looks like, 'Oh how sad! That girl doesn't know her boyfriend's gay!' But we're just holding hands just because."

Now Miley isn't referring to Adam Shankman as her gay BFF, is she? Because that guy's started enough trouble for her.

Why is that, do you suppose? It makes no sense. Discussing it shouldn't be a problem, especially on a site where gay/lesbian issues are discussed.

No it doesn't make sense and it shouldn't be a problem. As to "why," I think it would take some serious time on a psychiatrist's couch to figure that one out - but the short answer is that the forum is controlled by Jake fangirls/boys who think you are disparaging someone's reputation by mentioning the word gay. Of course, they won't admit that, and the company line is that they object because it's an insult to Jake's integrity to infer that he would lie about being gay/bi or that he would beard (as if that is never done in HW, lol). Plus, it ruins the fangirls' fantasies that someday Jake will sweep them off their feet.

Anonymous said...

The funny thing in the Queerty article is that it states, "For his part, Halls is openly gay." So Bomer doesn't hide the fact that he lives with an openly gay man and his children, goes out in public with them as a family, and we even saw a video a couple weeks ago of Matt taking one of the kids to the Shrek premiere.

Anonymous said...

at the end Queery said they will then add Bomer to their list of out actors

ONTD said...

As the ONTD poster notes, the source (National Enquirer) is questionable. But the fact that Rock Hudson was gay is not, so fwiw:

Rock Hudson's Sexuality Cost Another Actor His Career?

RORY CALHOUN, a rising star, was nearly blacklisted after Confidential magazine cut a secret deal by Hollywood studio ops to keep their biggest, seeming hetero, male star ROCK HUDSON safely in the closet.

Calhoun, who was born Timothy Francis McCowan, had a troubled early life, drifting in and out of reform schools to hard time in San Quentin by the time he was 21.

After his release, he met actor Alan Ladd's agent wife Sue Carol Ladd who introduced him to David O. Selznick Studio employee Henry Willson who managed a stable of hunky young men who showed "promise".

Willson carefully groomed his young protégé, and changed his name to Rory Calhoun.

Rory's first public appearance was as Lana Turner's male escort to the premiere of Hitchcock's Spellbound and after generating some PR heat, Selznick loaned Calhoun out to other studios.

After costarring with Shirley Temple and tough guy Edward G. Robinson, Calhoun's star was on the rise as he soon appeared in two Marilyn Monroe films How to Marry a Millionaire, and River of No Return.

During Calhoun's big build-up, Willson kept a firm grip on his leash.

After vetoing Calhoun's engagement to French sex kitten Corinne Calvet, Wilson did the unthinkable - he sold out one client to protect another.

Shockingly, in 1955, Willson divulged hush-hush information and details about Calhoun's years behind bars to Confidential magazine in exchange for the mag to not print a bombshell exposé revealing the secret gay life of superstar Rock Hudson.

Boldly, Calhoun trumped Confidential's "scoop" by going public first.

The jailhouse revelation seemingly did little to damage Calhoun's reputation, solidifying his bad boy image to moviegoers - much like Robert Mitchum's post-marijuana bust in 1948.

Yet, Calhoun never rose above B-movie status working more in European films like sword and sandal epic The Colossus of Rhodes and as a frequent guest star on TV shows before his death in 1999.

Hudson remained in the closet to his legion of fans despite long-standing rumors until his death from AIDS in 1985.

To Hollywood insiders, Rock's closeted truth was NO secret.

Troublesome Rumblings from the Closet
Many gay actors invested an enormous amount of energy to remain closeted, but such efforts took their toll physically and psychologically. Raymond Burr, for example, believed he could ensure privacy by creating an imaginary world to hide his homosexuality and his forty-year relationship with Robert Benevides. Burr claimed he was married three times and had a son who died of leukemia at age ten. Only in the late 1990s did his sister admit that Burr was married only once, for a short time, and had no son.
No one can explain with certainty why Burr created such an elaborate facade to keep his life secret, but the actor clearly believed extreme actions needed to be taken. Possibly Burr had found out that in 1961, at the height of his popularity in television and film, a member of the American Bar Association, where Burr frequently spoke by virtue of his famous portrayal of Perry Mason, gave the FBI documents indicating that Burr was "a noted sex deviate."
...
If Burr and Perkins are examples of the extremes actors have gone to in an effort to conceal their homosexuality, Tommy Kirk is an object lesson in the dangers of not concealing one's gayness in the early 1960s.
Kirk was a child star in such blockbuster Disney films as The Absent Minded Professor (1961) and The Shaggy Dog (1959). But in his late teens, despondent over the exploitation of his cute all-American adolescent image, Kirk took a step that most of his gay predecessors in Hollywood never dared. He came out to Disney.
Immediately fired, Kirk briefly received national press coverage but soon passed into obscurity
. He joined church organizations working with gay and lesbian youth. He remained furious, and, at times, vocal, about Disney's propaganda mill and discriminatory practices. Unfortunately, Kirk's heroic act has all but disappeared from gay history.
...
Contemporary Debate: To Come Out or Not to Come Out
A lawsuit filed by Tom Cruise, in which he charges a tabloid with falsely alleging that he is a homosexual, contends that such allegations could result in audiences' inability to identify with him as an action hero.

Film Actors: Gay Male

Thanks for the link, 1:59PM. So sad. So frustrating.

Moreover, director Irwin Winkler, who recently made De-Lovely (2004), about Cole Porter's life as a gay composer, acknowledged that the fear of being "outed" as a gay actor still permeates Hollywood. "Most of the actors that are gay," he said, "are not openly gay at all and there are some that we know that if we talked about them . . . would be pretty upset."

And this made me want to cry: "Obsessed with his image, Hudson supposedly declared he would rather die before fans discovered he was gay"

What a fucked-up world. :(

Producers Hal Luftig and Scott Sanders announced today that Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's landmark musical EVITA will open on Broadway in the spring of 2012 at a Nederlander Theatre to be announced. The production will star world renowned music artist Ricky Martin as Ché and, making her Broadway debut, Olivier Award Winning Argentinean actress Elena Roger as Evita, reprising her celebrated performance from the 2006 critically acclaimed production in London's West End. Olivier Award winner Michael Grandage and Tony Award winner Rob Ashford will also return to direct and choreograph, respectively. This is the first new Broadway production of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical since it debuted on Broadway more than 30 years ago.

"I've been blessed with the opportunity to perform on many of the world's largest concert stages, but I've never lost my love for the intimacy of the theater," said Ricky Martin. "I'm delighted to know that after I've had the chance to share new music and tour over the coming year, that I will then return once again to Broadway. I'm looking forward to playing such an essential part in Michael Grandage's wonderful production and the chance to work with the tremendously talented Elena Roger."

Yes, it was "my" hug.

I didn't take any pictures of it, it just seemed too intrusive someohow, lol.

I'm glad pictures are showing up. I took a crap camera because on the website for the museum they said no cameras would be allowed, so I was afraid to take a good camera in case I had to check it. Then I got inside and there were all kinds of cameras. The woman next to me was clutching one of those huge, expensive cameras with a very long lense.

is it too early for graphic gay sex scenes? said...

Over a year ago we got a chance to read about the "graphic gay sex scene" in I Love You Phillip Morris, the gay con caper starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor that's been denied a U.S. release date yet again. But, what's this, the scene has surfaced?

Of course it has. This is the Internet, after all, and Morris has already premiered in other countries. The blog LA Rag Mag tipped us off the scene was out there, but didn't provide an embeddable clip, so we went out and got one.

It's not as graphic as we thought it would be, but it's still probably NSFW, and will shock staid American audiences.

Jake Gyllenhaal: Good Actor But Frequently Miscast: http://www.filmsforwomen.com/2010/06/chick-flicks-hunk-4-jake-gyllenhaal-good-actor-but-frequently-miscast/

^^^ said...

Let’s be honest: He was in the chick flick (minus the use of chicks as viable love interests other than as beards and/or obstacles) to end all chick flicks of all time: Brokeback Mountain. Two gorgeous, strapping young cowboys (Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger) meet one summer herding sheep, fall in love unexpectedly but can’t find a way to be together due to the deeply ingrained societal prejudices of their time and culture. The girls sighed and cooed. The gays flocked in clamorous droves amazed that a same-sex romance was finally at the center of a mainstream movie. And the straight males who were dragged kicking and screaming to the movie by their wives and girlfriends emerged profusely admiring the film. And why wouldn’t they? With its haunting story of thwarted love, flawlessly epic-scale direction by Lee, perfectly precise screenplay by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry (based on the New Yorker short story by Annie Proulx) and impeccable performances by Ledger and Gyllenhaal, the film became in a short timeframe both a red-button conversational piece and a classic (and of course, a teeming reservoir of sophomoric one-liners by comics and others uncomfortable with the movie’s topic–I guess if they liked the film, it could make them—gasp–gay).

Brokeback Mountain went on to win a string of prestigious laurels only to lose the Oscar for Best Picture in a shocking upset to the lesser crafted, incoherent muddle that was Paul Haggis’ Crash–a boring, overwrought, mish-mash of a film whose only virtue (in my opinion) was the lyrical scene in which Matt Dillon rescues Thandie Newton from a burning car. Au courant journalists and insiders blamed homophobia on the part of the Academy for this unforgivable derailment. Maybe it’s justice that since that devastating loss, Crash has receded into the dust of obscurity where it belongs and should have stayed in the first place while the superior Brokeback Mountain has become enshrined in the pantheon of film classics, groundbreaking and unforgettable in its depiction of star-crossed gay love.

^^^ Chick Flicks Hunk #4 – Jake Gyllenhaal – Good Actor But Frequently Miscast said...

With his thick mane of dark hair, limpid blue eyes, dewy features and innate sensitivity, Gyllenhaal was compared by some critics and his director Lee in the wake of Brokeback Mountain’s release to be his generation’s answer to Montgomery Clift. After seeing Gyllenhaal in his post-Brokeback Mountain movies, which included the ponderous, occasionally brilliant and pretentious Zodiac (where he was miscast), the god-awful Rendition (where he looked confused) and the well-intentioned but pointless Brothers (where he was good but didn’t do enough), I can honestly say I’m a bit disappointed in the choices he’s made. He certainly hasn’t met the Monty Clift comparisons, but then in fairness to him, who would? Still, he is young and unlike his Brokeback Mountain co-star, Heath Ledger, who died way too young and tragically before his time, Gyllenhaal has the years ahead of him to carve out a memorable career.

I’m mystified by his decision to play the eponymous lead in the current dopey swords and sandals fantasy saga Prince of Persia: The Sand of Time. Clearly, he was aiming to be the next action adventure star in the Harrison Ford mold. Talk about self-delusion. He should fire his retinue of advisors, managers, agents, etc. Not that he has embarrassed himself in this film–the critics haven’t been as unduly harsh with him as they have been with our SATC ladies (probably because of sexism, ageism and misogyny) but…it’s confusing why someone who is not his generation’s Steve Reeves would agree to play this role that’s all surface pyrotechnics and not emotional pyrotechnics.

He would be a natural for romantic comedy; I wonder why he hasn’t tackled this genre yet. I think he and Amanda Seyfried would make a stunning on-screen couple. Is it because rom-com is too often viewed as the last refuge for a failing leading man? Who said drama is hard but comedy is harder?

I also think he’d be a GREAT villain. I remember years ago there was a Masterpiece Theater series starring Nigel Havers entitled “The Charmer,” about a handsome sociopath who preys on rich older women, charms them out of their savings and later kills one of them when his plans go awry. He’d be perfect in that kind of a role. I think he has the chops but right now, just like Scarlett Johansson (whom I wrote about in my post on the women of Iron Man 2), he’s a prisoner of his looks; he’ll probably need to age a bit, get a few lines to crease his winsome boy-next door- face before he gets those juicy parts that might fulfill the promise he set initially with his performance in Brokeback Mountain.

Jake would be a very good villain. I agree.

Because 90% romantic comedies = movie trash?

Anonymous said...

That's a well-written and insightful article. Agree about firing everyone around him - hell, that's been said around here for a long time.

I wonder why she didn't mention LAOD since she is wondering why he hasn't done a rom-com.

I have always thought he'd be a great villain, too, and I'd really like to see him tackle that. Aaron Eckhart did a movie years ago called "In the Company of Men" and he played this sociopath who sets this woman up and gets her to fall in love with him only to cruelly dump her all as part of a twisted game. Eckhart was outstanding in the role. I can totally see Jake doing a part like that - he'd really have to divest himself of his high likability factor and that would good for him as an actor.

Anonymous said...

Comedies - yes, please. Dramas - yes, please. Romantic comedies - no.

Anonymous said...

Clearly, he was aiming to be the next action adventure star in the Harrison Ford mold.

Jake would be great "action star" for roles with a twist - like John Book (Harrison Ford) in 'Witness'.

Anonymous said...

Romantic comedy - yes!
I paid good money to see all Hugh Grant's (so-so)comedies, Jake will sure get my money, and this is what he wanted by making Pop, no?

Anonymous said...

Romantic comedy - more abs talk and more beards. Oh God.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if I could watch Jake as a mysogynist. :(

Anonymous said...

You make no sense - if you can't see Jake as an action/adventure hero, what makes you think he'd be a great villain? Perhaps he could be, but I'm just trying to follow the logic with this. Also, according to some of you here, he's already divested himself of his likeablity, hasn't he? Talk about BS.

Anonymous said...

Action/adventure heros and villains are very different.

Anonymous said...

Also, according to some of you here, he's already divested himself of his likeablity, hasn't he?

What do you mean?

Anonymous said...

Well the criticism from a lot of you abot PoP would apply for the villain roles too. Why do you feel he'd be more suited to a villainous role, especially a psychopath?

Anonymous said...

I don't know if I could watch Jake as a mysogynist. :(

Why not? It's a role. It's not him. This is the same problem people have with gay actors playing straight - they can't separate the person from the role. I don't get it. Jake is a separate person from the parts he plays.

Anonymous said...

Well, if you don't think he can play an action adventure role - a mysogynistic psychopath would be even more difficult - for starters, sensitivity and vulnerability are qualities these men would not have.

Anonymous said...

Why not? It's a role. It's not him.

Then what was the problem with his playing Dastan? Why couldn't you separate the actor from the role with Dastan? I don't follow.

Anonymous said...

Also, according to some of you here, he's already divested himself of his likeablity, hasn't he?

Huh? I'm the one who said playing a villain would be a good stretch for him as an actor and I think it would be because it is so far removed from his public persona and he would have to part with his likability factor to do so. I never said he has already divested himself of his likability. Please don't lump everyone's comments together. And I don't know why it's got you ticked off and defensive of him. Everyone's just expressing opinions.

Anonymous said...

I have no problem separating actors from their roles. I thought he did a fine job as Dastan, but here and at OMG, it's been said that he can't play that type of role because he's not cut out for it. You contradict yourself.

Anonymous said...

You contradict yourself.

There is no contradiction, no one is saying that Jake should play
action/adventure heros.

Anonymous said...

Then what was the problem with his playing Dastan? Why couldn't you separate the actor from the role with Dastan? I don't follow.

What are you talking about? Where did I say I couldn't separate him from Dastan? Again - stop lumping everyone's comments together.

Anonymous said...

I'm just asking. I'd love to see him play a villain. But I don't know why everyone couldn't see him as an action adventure hero.

Anonymous said...

It isn't lumping everyone's commments together. Even if it were, someone should still be able to answer the question.

Anonymous said...

So you are saying that you did find that he did a good job as Dastan? The same qualities that some said he couldn't shed to make a convincing action adventure hero (I don't agree)are the same qualites he'd need to leave behind to make a convincing villain, all but the deadly charm. I see a contradiction here. And turning the tables on me isn't going to cut it, I do separate actors from their roles.

Anonymous said...

The same qualities that some said he couldn't shed to make a convincing action adventure hero (I don't agree)are the same qualites he'd need to leave behind to make a convincing villain, all but the deadly charm. I see a contradiction here.

That isn't so, an actor needs different qualities for such different roles.
An example, Kevin Spacey is great as villain, but doesn't have what is needed for adventure hero roles.

Anonymous said...

Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no. But some of the same complaints about it would still apply. We don't know, Kevin might have when he was younger. He's at a different place in his career now, so we are not talking about the same thing.

Anonymous said...

The article compares Jake to a conman, a sort of villain.

Anonymous said...

I guess what kind of villain is the question. That article wasn't well written. A slapdash sort of thing, from all appearances.

Anonymous said...

A con game is a sort of duet - one can't be conned unless they have some kind of moral weakness to begin with.

Anonymous said...

^^For instance, a greedy person who gets involved in a Ponzi scheme. A conman can spot and exploit.

Anonymous said...

What about comedies and musicals?

Anonymous said...

I think he'd be great at comedy, I think he'd be great at anything. He's got a great voice and would love him in a musical. I'm kinda sad that people have been so harsh on him about action adventure. But he does have a lot more depth to him. I'd love to see him as a villain too. The writer may be right in that he may need to get a little age on him, he may be a prisoner of his good looks. I remember Nigel Havers in that role very well.

Anonymous said...

Great article. Jake himself said that during POP he ran from one scene to the next they were filming so quickly. Thats not acting. Its filling space while things happen around you. He is a good actor and belongs in roles with some meat. Villains and cads fit that bill. Besides women love bad boys and part of Jakes problem is that he is perceived as a good boy. A villainous role would help him. Look what the Joker did for Heath. Had he lived he would have been up there with the greatest actors ever. Amen to Jake firing his advisors. One bad decision after the other. What is he waiting for.

Jake Gyllenhaal……………………………………
June 10, 2010

It was a game of cat and mouse tonight as I was everywhere Jake was last night. We spotted him at “Nobu” restaurant last night and let him drive off without flashing him with the camera since he was already in the car. Then, I went to get gas in the car and he was there! I snuck up behind him with the camera just to mess with him and him and Adam Levine (Who was with him) started laughing. I explained to him that not all paps are rude and some (like myself) are nice and respectful. We shook hands and I let him go a second time without being shot. Then I headed to “Las Palmas” nightclub to laugh over the story when all of a sudden Jake shows up there! He sees me from the car and I see him. He gets out and runs towards me and says ” I thought you weren’t going to shoot me”? I replied, ” You ran towards and right in front of me!” I let you go twice tonight Jake…The third time goes up for sale for the magazines.

JULINA: What’s your ideal time to come onto a film? When you’re able to do one or two drafts of rewrites and have a large part in its development, or does it not really matter? Do you have criteria of how much time you like to have with the script?

JAKE: Ideally?

JULINA: Yeah, ideally.

JAKE: Yeah, that’s what you said. [Laughs] I think, ideally, I do like to be with the material for a long time. And I liken it to rehearsing fight choreography or trying to figure out an accent. I’m definitely not an actor that picks it up immediately and can roll with it. I need to go over it over and over and over again, and that’s something I’ve learned [about myself] over time. I like to be there for a few drafts before it becomes the final shooting version because, particularly if you’re in a majority of the scenes of the movie, you’re part of the steering of the ship, so you just need to know that ship really well and where it’s going. I get off on that too — that’s what I enjoy. That’s why it’s been fun working with Doug, and with Simon [Kinberg] on [the Untitled Moon Project] developing this movie together, because they’re really collaborative and we’ve been through different versions discussing things all the time, and all of that discussion goes into whatever the final version is. Even if the scenes you’ve discussed for years don’t end up in the final version of the movie, somehow they’re there, you know? So I like to be a part of it, and I also think it’s really bonding to be doing that with all the filmmakers. You’re with your director and you’re with your writers — you’re listening to how they work, and how they change things, and what makes them nervous, and how you can make them feel comfortable, on the day. You know, with some directors — most directors — I like to know what they have to have the day before [we shoot a given scene], so that they can start their day. I like to know how you can give them what they want.

JULINA: When we interviewed Simon Kinberg, he talked about writing for specific actors, and we asked him what he felt were the most important characteristics when he was writing for you. Can you guess what he said?

JAKE: No. [Laughs]

JULINA: [Laughs] It wasn’t bad! He said the most important thing when writing for you was that your character be smart.

JAKE: Yeah, definitely. Intelligence is definitely a key to it. I think to write a character that’s hopefully smarter than the actor playing them, that’s when it gets hard, you know.

JULINA: Well, the challenge with someone like Cole, the protagonist of the Moon movie, is that he’s either a rocket scientist or a salesman who loves rocket science — I haven’t read the latest draft, but he’s gotta talk the talk, whether he can actually do it himself or not.

JAKE: It’s true; it’s the ambition even more than the intelligence. But yeah. It takes great intelligence to convince people to join the fray.

JULINA: Full disclosure by the way: my husband is John Gill, John Freeman Gill, who wrote some of the early versions of Doug’s Moon movie.

JAKE: [Laughs] That’s crazy. Who hasn’t at this point, by the way, right?

I'm not understanding this. Are you assuming that an actor or a movie is condoning misogynistic or sociopathic behavior because it portrays it? And are you assuming that the scenario I referenced wasn't integral to the story?

Anonymous said...

Of course not. I just wouldn't want to see it unless it made sense to the story. No, I don't assume that an actor condones it. Yes, dependinging on the film, it might not be integral to the story. You didn't make the distinction.
