Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Mike Newell:
'I’d known Jake for a long time because I’d known his parents and worked with his sister, but I’d never worked with him. His face is his fortune. He looks like he has one layer of skin fewer than anyone else; he’s tender and vulnerable in a way that a lot of people aren’t. But then he made himself into an action hero. I saw him do it, step by step. Of course the stunt man is there, because of insurance, but Jake did all his own riding, his own fighting, his own gymnastics. It’s something that you don’t see until you look at the whole movie and think: Christ, he actually did that. On the one hand he gave what I expected him to give, which is the sensitive actor stuff. But on the other, he really worked hard.'
Sir Ben Kingsley:
'Jake is a great leading man to work with - he's wonderful to work with because he makes himself vulnerable. For a strong young guy like that, not many of his American counterparts are vulnerable. They don't dare to be vulnerable because they think vulnerable is weak. It is not - to be vulnerable is to be very strong.'

I have to say I feel sorry for Jake, because I know he must feel bad about the lack of success of PoP.
(((Jake)))
We were right about PoP, let's be right about LAOD and Source Code too - those will be great movies! :)
Have to agree with most of the ONTD commenters - too muscular for my taste. But out and proud is always good :)

Angelo Garcia, once the youngest-ever member of Menudo and a bandmate of Ricky Martin's, has come out as gay in the pages of TV Notas (Junio 8, 2010). In the piece, he says he's never been closeted: "I'm very honest about who I am, but I don't like labels...people need to understand that someone's sexuality doesn't make the person. I'm more than that, a son, brother a musician..." But I believe he is confirming his identity publicly for the first time on the heels of appearing nude in a gay magazine.
He says he wasn't surprised when Ricky Martin came out, though he never saw Martin with a man or woman and assumed he was asexual (and no, they never fucked—he was 10 when Martin was 18, y'all). Martin had his own private room apart from the others.
Garcia theorizes their manager might have thought Martin was gay and kept him from his impressionable bandmates, or Martin may have had a private room as a perk since he was the eldest Menudo.
As for his dating life, Garcia confirms he has been with famous actors (notably some in telenovelas)...but coyly won't name names since they're not out.
In case you were wondering, Garcia is still an active performer (and obviously a bodybuilder who thinks too much of a good thing is never enough—wow).
Jake should have taken on a good supporting role in a summer blockbuster. I know he has always wanted to portray a hero and have his own franchise. But it isn't his time yet. That said, PoP doesn't deserved its bad reputation. But critical success and a sequel wasn't meant to be. C'est la vie. Now let's cross our fingers for his upcoming stuff.
PoP isn't worth worrying too much (resulting in bald beard patches), Jake himself did a great job.
let's be right about LAOD and Source Code too - those will be great movies!
I really do think LAOD could put Jake firmly into the bankable leading man category.
Doesn't Leo resemble Chris Nolan a lot? :)

He does. Nolan looks like he could be Leo's dad.

I think that Jake’s lack of box office success is because he is marketed as an A-list star only because Hollywood has been selling him as one with a PR strategy, but not because his star power is recognized by a genuine demand of the public. For some reason, the general audience is not interested in him.
This is not a criticism. I love Jake and I think he is a talented actor. It’s just an observation of Hollywood as a business. The mainstream public seems to not be interested in consuming the product 'Jake as a movie star'.
Um, maybe his older brother?

Jake needs good movies and better PR team.
Jake needs good movies
I'll quote on of our posters here and say...DUH!
AND better PR team. Good movies aren't enough, ask Ryan G.
My first thought was older brother, but for the young ones around here thought Dad. :)
People shouldn't get their hopes up about LAOD based on what could be some "plants" about how great Anne is in it and that it has Oscar buzz.
Same things were said about Brothers.
And Zwick's last movie was a disaster.
I actually think the problem is that he was great at the more indie movies. By trying to be more mainstream/blockbuster he's trying to compete with a different class of actor and he fails.
Just stick with what you are good at.
Just stick with what you are good at.
I think Jake is good enough as action star. There must be another reason the film flopped domestically.

"The mainstream public seems to not be interested in consuming the product 'Jake as a movie star'." So true so true. And what public interest there was post BBM was quashed by his managements poor choices. They made him plain vanilla stole his personality and paired him with the coldest bitch on the planet. Way to go.
Maybe Jake made those bad choices himself?
I think Jake is good enough as action star. There must be another reason the film flopped domestically.
The problem is Jake doesn't appeal to straight men.
Career Watch: "Male action stars tend to appeal to men, while Gyllenhaal’s primary fan-base is female."
^^I don't believe that.
You can believe what you want but I think that's exactly it.
The reason it didn't do as well domestically is that it may not appeal to American tastes. Obviously it's well liked overseas. And SATC is sinking like a stone.
11:33 AM, what is your opinion? What's missing?
I can, and do, believe what I want. Not from a bunch of sour-grapes posters.
11:37 AM #1, you are saying that Jake isn't the problem, that PoP theme is the problem?
I don't know. I'm going to have to give it some consideration.
And SATC is sinking like a stone.
SATC2 still has some big markets left to open on, PoP opened everywhere, it's all downhill from here. SATC2's budget is also only 100 million.

ITA.
I also agree that people just were not that interested in POP, and that Jake does not seem to appeal to straight men.
It could be that anything remotely relating to Middle Eastern themes is s turn-off to American audiences. Where they are stereotyped and made to be the villain is the only time a film will succeed.
That would be the reason for the dramatic difference overseas as well.
Meant to say that I also agree that Jake went along with the strategy his managment mapped out for him as the way to glory.
That would be the reason for the dramatic difference overseas as well.
The difference is dramatic, yes, but make no mistake the overseas numbers for PoP are only good, not great.
Actually, when I first heard about PoP, it crossed my mind that the Middle Eastern theme might not go over with American audiences. Post 9/11, oil crisis, wars going on. The difference between b/o numbers for the US and overseas is dramatic.
It could be that anything remotely relating to Middle Eastern themes is s turn-off to American audiences.
That's assuming anyone even had a clue what the theme was. The marketing for the film was really poor. For all the money they spent, I think I saw an ad on tv only a couple of times. Did they save it all for children's shows? Certainly not on any shows I watch regularly, a big glaring omission being Jon Stewart, which usally gets all the movie ads, and has a large young, male audience.
And SATC is sinking like a stone
Again with the comparisons to crappy SATC2. How does the fact that SATC2 is awful and that it's doing poorly make PoP a better movie or make it look better? Movies have to be able stand on their own.
I also agree that people just were not that interested in POP, and that Jake does not seem to appeal to straight men.
I agree with this too. POP was a video game originally, you have to remember that. So the people who would go see the film were those who played it, which is generally male. Stereotypical? Yes. But the bulk of hard core video game fans IS male.
However, a lot of guys laughed when Jake was cast. If you look at twitters about the film it seems to be a lot of females that went just to see him with his shirt off. There's not enough of those people to carry a whole movie with an outrageous budget to try to recoup.
Heath to play Joker didn't go over well with that crowd either...but he blew them all away as Joker.
I'm female, and didn't go to see Jake with his shirt off. I liked the idea of the movie. You can't generalize like that, unless you have statistics to back it up.
There's no comparison. I'm just remarking about how bad it is, that's all. It has nothing to do with PoP. What, we can't speak ill of that piece of crap?

Yes, TDK fanboys were nasty when Heath was casted, but when they saw the trailer and preview they were convinced.
But generally, I think Heath appealed more to straight males whereas Jake appeals more to straight females and gay males.
I didn't say it was a fact, I said "if you read twitters it SEEMS to be"- just expressing my ideas for why it didn't do so well.
You say you liked the idea of the movie- could you explain why? I'm not arguing with you, it's just that at least in my market there was zero advertising. I saw nothing that told me what the movie was about, so I wouldn't even have the opportunity to like the idea of the movie.
Heath to play Joker didn't go over well with that crowd either
Until the first picture and teaser leaked. PoP will all the trailers, TV spots, stills, interviews etcetc didn't change people's minds much.
I'm female, and didn't go to see Jake with his shirt off.
Why not?!
hazelgreenluv: Hmm I haven't decided if I should go see Prince of Persia only for Jake Gyllenhaal.
I can't speak for everyone but in my little microcosm of the world; my husband who is an avid video game player, loved Troy and 300, generally sees every single action movie that comes out has zero desire to see PoP, not even on DVD.
He said it just looked like crap from the few ads he saw.
But also, in our circles people just aren't going to see movies at all. They are too expensive and it has to really seem exceptional for anyone to make the investment. They just wait till they come out on Netflix... and nowdays it's not that long of a wait. Add to that fact, the last couple of weekends we've had ridiculously nice weather so everyone has trekked to the beach or had BBQs.
Has there been any talk about ticket sales just being lower than normal in general for around Memorial Day weekend?
Has there been any talk about ticket sales just being lower than normal in general for around Memorial Day weekend?
We love talking box office here at The Big Picture; I'd say we bring it up more than any movie blog I know of that isn't devoted to that aspect of the business. I think the reason why is because it's the stats, the only thing that isn't wide open to a qualitative discussion.
And 2010 is proving to be a schizophrenic year at the box office. It enjoyed the highs of Avatar, which led almost directly into the massive success of Alice in Wonderland; those two films combined have earned nearly $4 billion worldwide in six months. However, while 2009 was so big it looked like 2010 would follow suit based on the strength of those two blockbusters, it really hasn't been the case across the board.
Witness Memorial Day weekend, which The Wrap reports was the worst such weekend in ten years. Not since 2001 had the four-day frame dipped below $180 million for total US revenue, and this past weekend was only $184.2 million. That's down about 15% from last year and 2008, and over 25% off the 2007 high point of $246.4 million.
Is it the quality of the movies? Not exclusively. In 2007, the three movies driving the bus were Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, and Pirates of the Caribbean: We've Exhausted All the Good Ideas. Maybe people saw them in such large numbers because there was nothing else out there, but each is still the worst in its franchise. As it happens, they were also three of the top four earners of that year.
Iron Man 2, while not a fantastic film, is better than all three of those, and it's not greatly outperforming the first movie, Robin Hood didn't do much, Sex and the City is dreadful, and Prince of Persia, for all practical purposes, is a bomb in America. Shrek Forever After, which is probably the best movie to compare to 2007, is not only better than Shrek 3, but it also has the boosted 3-D ticket sales, and it's still not making a big impression. Even though it looks like a candidate to top $225 million or so, that's roughly two-thirds the business of its predecessor.
Is it the economy? Again, not exclusively, or why would Alice in Wonderland make so much? How could we be six months removed from the biggest movie ever, squarely in the money-making season for Hollywood (and in an economy that's no worse than it was in the fourth quarter of 2009), and show up so small, relatively speaking?
Originality? That's not usually an issue when you look at the grosses. Entertainment options? Maybe, but this is an awfully sharp decline for that to be the culprit. I think it's probably an unpredictable combination of everything. The movies aren't as interesting this summer as they have been, maybe people are spending more on vacations this year than in past years because the economy seems to be leveling, and there are increasingly more ways to spend your entertainment time and money.
The prescription probably is for something audiences don't see every summer, which is why I think Inception might be a huge hit (now that people have seen some footage), and why stuff like District 9 and Inglourious Basterds and even The Hangover were such success stories last summer.
Memorial Day Weekend Box Office Worst Since 2001
I personally liked PoP. But Jake shouldn't have agreed to do it. It wasn't a good choice for him. He should have waited for another hero-role and/or potential franchise.
There's no comparison. I'm just remarking about how bad it is, that's all. It has nothing to do with PoP. What, we can't speak ill of that piece of crap?
Well, since I called it crappy in my post, obviously I don't have a problem with "speaking ill of it," lol. The reviews were beyond scathing and obviously a lot of the public agreed that it was a piece of shit movie. There. Did I "speak ill" enough? lol. But, of course you were making a comparison - there was no other reason to add the part about SATC2 to the end of your original post if you weren't.
Why is a "comparison" such an issue to you? What do you care? The film sucked, there's nothing that can compare to those reviews in quite some time. There is no comparison.

Good movie and good luck for Leo and Chris?
Good movie and good luck for Leo and Chris?
VERY likely. Leo knows how to choose movies, for sure.
Jake, maybe you should hang out more with Leo :)
Leo has the Brad Pitt appeal. Women go to look at him and men respect his acting chops. Plus, the movies he picks are interesting enough storylines that they make good date movies.
Leo has been lucky to have Scorcese--who makes films that appeal to men--in his corner casting him in every film.
Not to mention being in a movie everyone in the world saw.
Career advice. Veteran Hollywood journalist Anne Thompson offers some analysis of Jake Gyllenhaal's career in the wake of the "Prince of Persia" debacle. (Is debacle too strong? How about disappointment?) Thompson says "Prince of Persia" "didn't change the popular perception of Gyllenhaal as a likable leading man best suited to naturalistic dramas. There's still a sizable gap between the rising star's acting bona fides and his ability to put butts in seats." One valid point Thompson makes is that Gyllenhaal's appeal is more to women than men so action movies might not be his strong suit. Guess he'll just have to go back to making thoughtful dramas.
LA Times
^^ to clarify, they are good date movies because they appeal to a wide range of moviegoers.
Generally his movies aren't strictly action, or romantic, or historical, or thriller- they are different combinations of all of the above so you pull in more crowds that way.
PoP is formulaic. Not broad appeal for that, the only way you get more people in is great advertising and pure star power of the lead.
ceesalim: WTH?! Even jake gyllenhaal is a gay? Plus, with clay aiken? O_O
6 minutes ago
I think it became formulaic after focus groups, etc. It's strange that after giving the public what it wanted, they didn't seem to turn out for it. *shrugs*
Kate Winslet also was in a movie that everyone in the world saw and she's made plenty of box office disasters.
It has to be more than that.
Yes all actors and actress have.
Kate Winslet has an Oscar, DiCaprio doesn't but wants it badly. Noone can have it all.
Posting this for the Bomer/White Collar fans on here.
Last night the Paley Center in NYC had a discussion with the cast of White Collar, just like they did in LA last month.
It was a lot of fun, and Bomer was beyond adorable. Jeans, a pale lavender (I think) shirt with a beige jacket, glasses, the ring.
Some highlights:
Towards the end they opened it up to questions from the audience, and someone said they thought one of the themes of the show was love, even between the two guys, and asked if that was something that was planned from the beginning. Bomer turned to McKay and gave him a big old bromance hug. One of the producers was there (not the creator) and he answered that it hadn't been planned that way, but they realized it after seeing a scene in the pilot (haven't seen it) when they two guys were driving in a car and talking about their wife/Kate.
Another awww momemt, Bomer said one of the things he loved about the show was that the whole family could watch it together because it wasn't too racy or violent.
Finally at one point an Asian woman got up and told the actress playing the lesbian FBI agent how wonderful it was to have a woman of color playing a lesbian character on tv, and asked if we'd be seeing her characters girlfriend and more LGBT characters on the show. Nobody would talk about the upcoming seaon, but she hinted that the woman should defintely stick around because there were going to be lots of interesting developments with her character.

Kate has, as far as I can recall, stuck to smaller films since Titanic unless there is disastrous film of another sort that I have just erased from my memore. There isn't the same pressure to make a lot of money at the box office: they cost less, are made for prestige/awards season and can probably break even after sales of videos are factored in.
It was a lot of fun, and Bomer was beyond adorable.
Great, I'm happy that you got to see Matt.
I wonder if Jake did POP because he thought a Bruckheimer film would be fail-safe? He's made some really awful movies that nevertheless made a ton of money.
Don't think Jake will have any problems getting roles in the smaller films he used to do. I think it will be a very long time, if ever, before he gets the lead in a big-budget film. The real question mark is the films in between. LAOD falls into that category--would he have gotten that role after POP? Or even a movie like Jarhead? Might be a problem.
Thanks so much for posting, destiny!

The more I see and hear, the better he gets and he was damn near perfection to start, lol.

Excellent! The show looks like it will keep getting better and better, too :)
Over the weekend I was digging around on DL, and on the recent Bomer thread someone had linked a Bomer thread from 2007. In the older thread someone brought up his losing out on Superman Returns. Another poster said that not only did he lose out on it because of concerns about his sexuality, but that the original director quit when the studio insisted on his using another actor.
I find this interesting for a couple of reasons. One, the director who stood up for Bomer was Brett Ratner, a real "guys guy" kind of person and director.
And of course the director who took over (and apparently had no qualms about canning a gay actor) was Bryan Singer.
Two, I wonder if the studio first tried to get Bomer to beard or some other nonsense, and he said no??? No way of knowing. But clearly he lost a role for being gay, and it probably turned out to be a blessing in disguise given that Superman turned out so poorly and didnt' make much money, and Routh practically disappeared.
I just can't help wondering how different things would have been if Jake had turned down POP or said no to the bearding, which I still think was POP-related.
I know Bomer is doing tv now, so it's not a comprable situation, but still, it makes me wonder....and I have hopes for Bomer doing movies in the future.
Thanks so much for posting, destiny!
I'm just glad to have some fellow Bomer fans to share it with. Wish there was a site like this for Bomer--minus the waiting. ;)
I think Will Smith's son's movie with Jackie Chan will be no. 1 next weekend.
I bet it makes a ton of money too.
It's a Karate Kid remake, it has Jackie Chan in it and Smith's son. So, I agree it will make a ton of cash.

Career Watch: Jake Gyllenhaal
Signature line: "I wish I knew how to quit you," says Jack Twist to Ennis del Mar, in 'Brokeback Mountain.'
Career Peaks: Raised in L.A. by director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, Gyllenhaal popped up as a teen actor in the 1999 true story 'October Sky,' followed by his breakout role in Richard Kelly's strange 2001 psycho-drama 'Donnie Darko,' which went on to attain cult status. Gyllenhaal burnished his acting cred by playing a series of sensitive, sweet young men in low-budget indies such as 'The Good Girl,' 'Proof' and 'Lovely & Amazing.' While it was not Gyllenhaal's finest hour, the 2004 disaster epic 'The Day After Tomorrow' marks the actor's biggest global hit to date: a total $544 million. He scored critical raves for two 2005 films, Gulf War actioner 'Jarhead' and Ang Lee's tragic gay romance 'Brokeback Mountain,' opposite Heath Ledger, which earned $178 million worldwide.
Awards Attention: 'Donnie Darko' earned Gyllenhaal an Independent Spirit nomination as Best Male Lead, and he collected the London Evening Standard Theater Award for outstanding newcomer for the 2002 play 'This is Our Youth.' He won the supporting actor BAFTA for 'Brokeback Mountain,' and while many thought he should have joined Ledger in the best actor category, 'Brokeback Mountain' earned Gyllenhaal his first and only Oscar nom, for Best Supporting Actor.
Latest Misfire: This summer's $200-million would-be franchise 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,' a well-made but featherweight B-movie adventure from Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell, failed to launch. After losing 'The Dark Knight' to Christian Bale, 'Spider-Man' to Tobey Maguire, and 'Avatar' to Sam Worthington, Gyllenhaal had finally landed a major action role in a summer tentpole, or so he thought. Instead, many reviewers argued that Gyllenhaal was miscast, and despite his buffed-up physique, failed to carry the action adventure. While some women reviewers liked him -- AP's Christy Lemire describes his "engaging presence" and "those big, blue eyes, that goofy smile - and that sweetness helps keep the mood light," while The New York Times' Manohla Dargis writes that "a few hours of Mr. Gyllenhaal jumping around in leather and fluttering his long lashes has its dumb-fun appeal," other critics cited Gyllenhaal's "doubts and insecurities," "puppy-dog eyes," "self-deprecation" and "hangdog demeanor." Not what you expect from a rugged action hero.
Biggest Problem: 'Prince of Persia' failed to open well -- and didn't change the popular perception of Gyllenhaal as a likable leading man best suited to naturalistic dramas. There's still a sizable gap between the rising star's acting bonafides and his ability to put butts in seats. While Gyllenhaal earned excellent reviews in recent dramas 'Brothers,' 'Rendition' and 'Zodiac,' the films disappointed at theater wickets.
Major movie stars have a hint of danger about them; Gyllenhaal, who hits 30 in December, is one of many boyish American leading men who will earn needed gravitas as they age. No one had any trouble buying him as a well-muscled grunt with a shaved head in the realistic Gulf War drama 'Jarhead,' but audiences did resist him in breastplate and leather in a big-budget Disney studio sword-and-scandal flick. Male action stars tend to appeal to men, while Gyllenhaal's primary fan-base is female.
I've never saw such patches on Jake before.
You just never noticed. But that's okay, it means you're not as ~obsessed~ as some of us are. *embarrassed*
Anne Thompson continued ...
Current Gossip: After Gyllenhaal broke up in 2004 with the love of his life, actress Kirsten Dunst, he continued an on/off relationship with her for two years. Post-'Brokeback,' he good-humoredly shrugged off speculation about his sexuality, including a rumored affair with pal Lance Armstrong. Gyllenhaal met Reese Witherspoon in 2006 on the set of 'Rendition,' soon after her divorce from Ryan Phillippe, but that relationship ended at Thanksgiving. Gyllenhaal insists that he enjoys being single. During filming in Montreal on 'Source Code,' he hit the town with frisky Australian actress Isabel Lucas ('Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen').
Biggest Assets: A gifted actor with impressive range, Gyllenhaal has more options than ever. While 'Prince of Persia' was a setback for him, he may have moved the needle slightly. In the movie, he is charming, sexy and physical (with a boost from stuntmen and digital effects) in the role of a wily, athletic young prince who is scooped off the street as a kid by a kindly king. And he even manages a Cockney accent amid an ensemble of Brits. All it took for Matt Damon to become a matinee idol was the 'Bourne' franchise -- which suddenly revealed him as an athletic, dangerous action star. And Hugh Jackman was just a song-and-dance man before he took on Wolverine in the 'X-Men' franchise. "It's about the right person in the right role at the right time," says one studio casting director, who points out that it took Tom Cruise fifteen years to turn into the star of 'Mission: Impossible.'
Next Step: It doesn't look like we're going to see David O. Russell's long-on-the-shelf 'Nailed' anytime soon, which co-stars Jessica Biel and Catherine Keener. Embattled financeer David Bergstein's money woes have left the film gathering dust with a crucial scene still left to film. Gyllenhaal has completed Ed Zwick's romantic comedy 'Love and Other Drugs' (November 24), playing a Viagra salesman in 1995 who falls for Anne Hathaway ('Brokeback Mountain') as well as Duncan Jones' spy thriller 'Source Code,' in which Vera Farmiga sends him traveling through time. Michelle Monaghan co-stars in the film, which is due in 2011.
Career Advice: Look for great material with directors you respect, and don't abandon the indies for studio paydays. "Find parts that ask you to show things to audiences you haven't seen before," adds the casting director. "It's not about one movie. He's in for a body of work over the long run." So far, Gyllenhaal has chosen fairly well, without falling prey to godawful studio formula fare. I like the idea of him playing middle-aged Joe Boyd, who sells his soul to the devil to become a young baseball slugger in 'Damn Yankees,' a great musical with an emotional kick. (Gyllenhaal studied singing when he tried out for 'Moulin Rouge.') And Joe Namath has approved his casting as Broadway Joe, the great New York Jets football star, which Gyllenhaal wants to be "bad-ass," he told MTV, "so it's taken a little while. I'm committed."
"hangdog demeanor"
What?
After Gyllenhaal broke up in 2004 with the love of his life, actress Kirsten Dunst, he continued an on/off relationship with her for two years
Funny, after he and Reese 'broke up,' she was also referred to as the "love of his life." LOL.
I'm the love of his life, bitches.
M and M over at OMG is right, that article is a white-wash job, especially regarding the gay rumors.
Here's some career advice Jake: embrace who you are instead of running from the gay. Maybe if you'd done that in the first place you'd be in a better place right now, instead of having hacks defending you.
Post-'Brokeback,' he good-humoredly shrugged off speculation about his sexuality...
"good-humoredly shrugged off speculation about his sexuality" = "started fauxmance with actress who just got dumped by husband" in Hollywood-speak.
Seems JG went out of his way to jetison his gay fan base after BBM with the bearding and switch to action-man POP..he over-reached for the 15-25 male stght boys to whom he is " the dude who got fucked in a tent by the Joker." Sorry Jakey you and your peeps gambled and lost. Stick to romantic comedy.
Oh no, not romantic comedies, not another Gerard Butler, lol
3:33 PM, I didn't post that 'dating' bullshit for a reason ;)

Sad but true.
Talking of audiences reminds me of one other thing I meant to say about the White Collar event. The audience was made up of (1) women of every age, young to old, and (2) couples in their 50s and 60s. The women alone or with other women were clearly fangirls. I don't recall seeing any younger men, or men on their own, gay or straight.
I have no idea if that is typical of the audience they get at events like that, although I know in general tv is not watched as much by younger men, and that they are the hardest to pull into a show.
3:33 PM, I didn't post that 'dating' bullshit for a reason ;)
I know, but it's just too amusing to - and predictable - to resist :) I love how Isabel Who is "frisky." lol. Sounds like she should be dating Atticus :D
One, the director who stood up for Bomer was Brett Ratner, a real "guys guy" kind of person and director. And of course the director who took over (and apparently had no qualms about canning a gay actor) was Bryan Singer.
And openly gay Bryan Singer worked with a straight actor Brandon Routh.
I love how Isabel Who is "frisky." lol. Sounds like she should be dating Atticus :D
LOL!
I just can't help wondering how different things would have been if Jake had turned down POP or said no to the bearding, which I still think was POP-related.
No one can read the future, but I too wonder how Jake could have used Reeke and PoP time to improve his career and public image.
I don't recall seeing any younger men, or men on their own, gay or straight.
I think straight men regard events like as very uncool :)
And openly gay Bryan Singer worked with a straight actor Brandon Routh.
Pathetic, isn't it. Gay men in power in HW really are among the worst homophobes.
Singer was also a producer of the movie. I think, but I'm not sure, that he was on board as a producer before he became the director. Wonder if he was one of the ones saying no to Ratner and Bomer.
Two, I wonder if the studio first tried to get Bomer to beard or some other nonsense, and he said no??? No way of knowing.
That would be a huge career opportunity, you have to be very strong to say no to bearding / staying firmly in the closet.
Pathetic, isn't it. Gay men in power in HW really are among the worst homophobes.
That's a vicious, closed circle.
That would be a huge career opportunity, you have to be very strong to say no to bearding / staying firmly in the closet.
Especially for someone like Bomer, who was practically unknown.
He must have a lot of self-confidence.
And I think he probably has a good support system, and that it helped not growing up in HW. He started out trying to work in theater and did soaps, both areas where it is more common to not be so closeted.
He went to high school with Lee Pace, and they'd drive into Houston to take acting classes and do some theater work. Bomer said in an interview that his teammates on his high school football team were very supportive of his doing that--and joked that was probably because he wasn't such a good player so they didn't miss him.
And then there's Quinto that he has been friends with since college.
Three men who know each other, have some connection to theater, are in some ways outsides to HW, and have all never bearded.
Contrast that to Jake who grew up in HW, has his mother's friend as a publicist ......
Whenever I feel like trashing Jake for staying in the closet I try to remember that homophobia isn't his fault and that he's a victim too. That's my own closed circle :)
^^Yes.
Contrast that to Jake who grew up in HW, has his mother's friend as a publicist ......
No wonder Jake wants it all - money, recognition, fame.
Yes, Jake is a victim, and he doesn't have that much power in HW.
But victims will remain victims unless they start standing up for themselves.
And what did it get Jake in the end? It almost ruined his image, ran off a lot of his old fans, gained him no new fans, and now the movie that he did all of this for is considered such a dud that everyone is questioning his ability to carry a movie.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but a lot of us here were questioning what he was doing from day one.
POP may not have done better if he hadn't bearded and showmanced for almost three years, but I really doubt it would have done worse.
Even Reese smelled a bomb and cut him loose long before it came out.
There's a difference between staying in the closet and bearding. Jake could have just kept his private life private, instead of inventing a life to try and fool the public with.
Would not-bearding work? Do people think Quinto is gay because he's not dating (girls)?
People think Quinto is gay because he IS gay.
I don't think the public is that gullible or stupid. Dating or not dating people are going to still have their opinions on the person. I mean look at George C. and Leo, plenty of people think both of them are gay even though they parade around legions of models.
Hell, there are even some who think Brad Pitt is gay and he's dating Angelina.
On the other hand there are people who are never going to think anyone is gay even if it's right in front of their eyes because of whatever reason.
So I think bearding in general is a massive waste of time.
People think Quinto is gay because he IS gay.
Bradley Cooper is gay too, but general public doesn't know.
The huge problem in all of this is that the types of people who are attracted to acting are those who love attention. Once they get a taste of it, they become addicted so they do whatever they have to/need to in order to keep that attention.
That's why they go to pap hangouts and then "whine" about photogs being in their faces, why their reps call the tabloids and let them know info, why they beard, why they date (even if not bearding) who their studios and reps tell them to, etc.
I personally think all of HW is a big mirage. None of us know even 1% of what's true there.
I don't think Quinto is gay just because he doesn't beard.
I also don't think most of the general public knows he's gay. The same people who think he's gay think VGBB is gay.
VGBB = ?
Once they get a taste of it, they become addicted so they do whatever they have to/need to in order to keep that attention.
Media attention = $$$, like $$$ Aniston is making for Smart Water ads.
I personally think all of HW is a big mirage. None of us know even 1% of what's true there.
I think we do know because the same things are going on for the last 90 years :)
I wonder what would Jake say?
Do you want me to spit or swallow?
LMAO!
Destiny, give the Bomer Crusade a rest, will ya? Either that or start a blog for him.
What seems to be the problem, 6:25 PM? You think that Destiny loves Matt too much and Jake not enough?
I think she has her own reasons for pushing him.
Speak up, we can discuss everything here.
I have no interest in discussing it.
Ok. Whatever bothers you, I don't see what could be wrong with supporting Matt Bomer.
Details: Have you ever wanted to get married?
Ian McKellen: It's never crossed my mind that it'd ever be possible for me. That's the scar that I and so many others bear—we believed ourselves to be second-rate citizens for so long, the idea of being able to say "This is my husband, these are my children" was not an option. I remember Tom Stoppard saying to me when I came out, "I feel so sorry for you, because you'll never have children." These days I would say, "Well, why not, Tom?" But 20 years ago I accepted his judgment.
Details
I don't see what could be wrong with supporting Matt Bomer.
I don't either. The more success Bomer and NPH, etc., have, the better for everyone.
What Sir Ian McKellen said about husbands and children is one of the reasons why I have fingers crossed for Matt Bomer, Simon Halls, Clay Aiken, Ricky Martin and all other gay and proud parents.
Jake could have just kept his private life private, instead of inventing a life to try and fool the public with.
Maybe Jake will do just light bearding in the future? Zachary Quinto option sounds too optimistic.
There's nothing wrong with supporting Bomer, but the only reason Destiny is pushing him is because he's out. All the gushing about him just rings false - she might as well say the only reason she's doing it is to support out actors. She's phoney and self-important.
PoP came in fourth on Monday. Only 54,000 from third place.
I don't get it. What's wrong with supporting out actors?
the only reason Destiny is pushing him is because he's out
Matt isn't out, his closet has a glass door.
Yeah, I was just about to add that. Matt isn't technically out. But I still don't get what the problem is with supporting him or any other actor that is out. I would think everyone here would be in favor of that.
All the gushing about him just rings false - she might as well say the only reason she's doing it is to support out actors.
Are you saying that Destiny just uses Matt to trash Jake? Did you see Matt Bomer? It's much more likely that Destiny has a little crush ;)
Jake Gyllenhaal looked in very high spirits earlier today as he left his Studio City gym wearing a gray hoodie.
Jake, gym, June 08
New car? Rented car? Replacement car?
All the gushing about him just rings false - she might as well say the only reason she's doing it is to support out actors.
Don't we use every gay out celebrity to "trash" Jake, complain about his closet?
Don't we use every gay out celebrity to "trash" Jake, complain about his closet?
Speak for yourself. I genuinely admire actors like NPH that are out, and actors like Bomer who aren't afraid to live their lives, go out with their partners and children in public. Why shouldn't they be praised? We're not supposed to give them credit because Jake chooses to live his life the way he does?
Can't we do both - genuinely admire and use them to tell Jake what he shoud do too?
I read somewhere, I think in an article about NPH, that "out" actors are resented in HW - especially by the closeted gays - because they're breaking the unspoken HW rules. Some of this complaining about the attention that Bomer gets reminds me of that. Sounds like resentment that he's doing something that Jake isn't.
Can't we do both - genuinely admire and use them to tell Jake what he shoud do too?
I'm sure Jake is well aware of who's out and who isn't. He's going to do what he wants to do and what his people tell him is best for his career and that's his choice. But I'm not going to stop admiring out actors because of his choices.
New car? Rented car? Replacement car?
When do I get my keys?!?!
Re the pics of Reese watching Ava w/Ryan. Old Chinny is looking a little haggard and that outfit paired with that stupid hat makes her look like a dyke. Not a good look for her. Interesting that the new boyfriend isn't there. Been a few weeks since her last photo op with him. Things must not be perfect in Paradise with the new "love of her life" if she isn't pimping Mr. Toth in her photo ops. Also her arranged posts at JJ have been getting some brutal comments. The majority of comments are either calling her a PR whore who arranges her photo ops or how quickly she moves men into her kids lives and her homes.
When do I get my keys?!?!
Don't be silly.
New car? Rented car? Replacement car?
Plenty of room for me and Noah!

Always looking for a way to trash me trolly. First it was "why don't you support out gay actors instead of wishing for Jake to be out", and now that I am supporting one, you've got to find a way to criticize that.
What can I say, I love Bomer because he's beautiful, because I love the show White Collar and can't wait for the new season to begin, because he seems like a really nice guy, and because there is a lot to admire, including his courage in living as openly as possible.
I am a complete fangirl when it comes to Bomer, and Lambert too. Can't say that about NPH, Ricky Martin or other out artists, as much as I like and admire them.
If you want to read someone's support of an out or practically out artist as a form of Jake bashing, that is your problem, not mine.
As to whether Bomer is out or in a glass closet, I think both arguments can be made equally, as reflected by the fact that Queerty treats him as out, After Elton doesn't. Both of them are middle-of-the road gay sites that don't believe in outing people, and they have reached different conclusions about Bomer.
I think wearing a wedding ring when everyone knows you're not married to a woman, and taking your stepson to a movie premiere is just about as out as you can get without a big old People cover to announce it.
Thanks to all the posters who defended me.
I agree that Reese looks horrible, and my first thought was Toth was the real deal, but he's dumped her.
7:55, that is Exhibit A for why I am such a fangirl when it comes to Bomer. Love love love that photo; it could make me sweat on even the coldest winter day. ;)
"agree that Reese looks horrible, and my first thought was Toth was the real deal, but he's dumped her"
never have the impression they looked a couple !
If you believe in Chinese astrology Jake and POP were doomed from the start. Bad year for the Monkey sign. It would be better if LAOD gets pushed to next year.
Thanks to all the posters who defended me.
You're welcome.
It would be better if LAOD gets pushed to next year.
Damn, don't say that! :)

T.R. Knight and his new boyfriend :)
Bad year for the Monkey sign.
Michelle is monkey sign too and she'll probably be nominated for an Oscar this year. So...
Why does Jake laugh? Doesn't he know that Isabel denied it over a week ago? Why can't he say we are just friends like she did, instead he laughs.
What a punk-ass wuss
Because they aren't friends and it's a good idea not to comment such gossip.
They are friends and he is a punk ass liar. At least she told the tuth.
The last thing the paps said in the video No comment"? Yeah, he wants to keep it going. In stead of saying not true.
Punk ass liar

Since when? Since Isabel's PR decided to use Jake for some free PR?

NOH8Campaign?!? Are you crazy?
T.R. Knight and his new boyfriend :)
Jake, when will we see you holding hands with a boyfriend? :)
"It’s interesting because when all that stuff happened with the AMA awards and that whole controversy about me kissing that guy and grabbing the other dude—it’s funny because there was a generational divide within the gay community. There were some more conservative gays that were like, “You shouldn’t be doing that. You’re painting us in a bad light, making us look trashy.” And I remember thinking to myself, as proud as I am to be a member of the gay and lesbian community, it’s not my job to paint a picture of the community. I’m only responsible for painting a picture of who I am as an individual. It was a confusing time, because as proud as I am, I’m not here to represent a group. I’m here to be an artist."
Queerty
Happy 47th birthday Johnny Depp. :)
Maggie and Ramona out and about in New York:
JJB
I am insulting Maggie, not the kid, but who puts their three year old in that top? I think Maggie wore that in one of her movies.
The top caught my eye too, it's not a top I'd put on my kid, I think.
Ramona is adorable - looks just like her Dad, I think.
The top is a bit odd for a 3 year old, but it looks like it's attached to her pants like it's one-piece or something? In any case, Maggie has eclectic taste in clothing so Ramona probably will, too :)
Isabel using Jake for PR? If that was the case she would have not gone on record to deny any dating rumors.
Jake is the one using her, again he hiding behind a woman's skirt.
His phony laughing reminded me of when he was asked about Reese in the beggining, he laughed one time and said hilarious the next time and you know what happened after that.
Stop blaming women for punk Jake. He and his PR are full of shit.
