Something Magical

Jake Gyllenhaal talks about Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain and magical time in his life.

***

Between courses at the Ravagh Persian Grill in Manhattan (his choice), he pulls out from under his T-shirt the two chains that hang around his neck. Each has a ring at its end - one is a black diamond, the other a pendant of Saint Genesius, patron saint of actors - and he starts rolling them between his fingers. But he almost seems alarmed when I ask about them, as though he hasn't been aware of what he has been doing. A diner from another table comes over.
"Can I say hi to you?" she asks.
"Yes, you can," he says.
"Oh, my gosh," she says. "You're my favorite."
"Oh no," he says. "Oh, don't say that. You say that to everybody."
"No!" she protests. "I love The Brokenback Mountain. I really did love it. I watched it three times."

Brokenback Mountain. Once she recedes, he turns to me and says, "You don't want to know the variations of that title." He tells me how, just the other day, a lawyer asked him how he got into acting at such a young age. "I think at first I was just ambitious," he says. "It was blind ambition. I wanted to be out there. I mean, I remember watching my sister up onstage doing South Pacific when we were kids and going, 'That looks like a fucking lot of fun.'" He debates with himself. "Was it attention? Probably, but I think it was more the magic. It's magic, some of what happens in movies. I mean, people asked me many times through the experience of Brokeback Mountain what that was like. And the best way I can describe it is what we all carry with ourselves from that experience, and why we feel so close. Forget all the awards that come, with people kind of adorning each other - it wasn't about that. There was something magical in that time. We all slept in our trailers out by a trailer park the first month of making that movie. I was sleeping next to Ang's trailer; Ang's trailer was next to Heath and Michelle's trailer - they'd kind of moved in together. And Michael Hausman, the producer, brought his Airstream trailer down. And it was just us, by this river, for a month. And we would walk to set, and we would eat together, and we would all make coffee in the morning, and I would wake up in the morning and there would be Ang Lee doing Tai Chi outside of my trailer, and it was just magical. It was just magical."

Jake and Heath on Brokeback Mountain set
To promote the movie, the cast appeared together on Oprah. For the first half of the show, it was just Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger fending off Winfrey's enthusiasm and curiosity. There is a sheen cast over the movie now - to some extent because of its subject matter but mostly because of Ledger's death - that leaves it and anything connected to it frozen, untouchable. So rewatching the two actors on Oprah, I was surprised to see Gyllenhaal alluding to times that the two of them didn't get on during the filming. Gyllenhaal seems surprised, too, when I mention this, as if he wasn't aware this was something he'd shared. But he remembers. The scene with the two of them by the river, for instance.

"Where Heath's character goes into how his father knew of two guys who lived together and he ended up seeing them killed and dead. I had always read it in a certain way. I heard it in my mind a certain way. And I had worked with these incredible actors like Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. When I worked with Dustin, he would always do things to me; in between a take, he would stop his lines, and he'd be like, 'You're a wonderful person,' or horrible things sometimes to jar me... getting a different response. And so I decided in this scene to gather the gumption" - this was when Ledger's part of the scene was being filmed and Gyllenhaal was off-camera - "and I don't subscribe to this really, changing lines on an actor, because I don't think I'm Dustin Hoffman, and I don't think I have the ability or the talent to do that to somebody. But I do think that changing intention sometimes on an actor when you're doing a scene when you're not on-camera is really interesting for them. But I did it at one point in this one scene, and I'd always heard it a certain way, so I was almost trying to move the scene to that place for him. He delivered the whole thing very, very straight, and he could feel me trying to do that, and I remember him getting really upset with me. And I remember him turning to Ang at the end of it and going, 'If he wants to tell me what to do, have him tell you'... We had these kind of exchanges, you know. But ultimately, the way I look at it was I was wrong, because he was brilliant. But at the same time I think, "Well, if I hadn't, would it have gone a certain way?" We balanced each other out. When I think about these things that happened then, we were very much alive in that movie. We were really living that movie. Not literally, but you think about those times in your life..."

One thing Gyllenhaal would do - feeding off the way Ledger had chosen to play the part of Ennis quietly, his teeth clenched - was to ask him in character, "What? What'd you say?" "Stupid me," Gyllenhaal comments now.

Did Heath never do anything that annoyed you?

"No. I always admired Heath. I always was kind of enamored by him, you know. I mean, yeah, sometimes it was hard to sit with him. He moved... He was a mover."

People have since suggested that he was really, really troubled by having to do all that promotion and campaigning. Was that your sense?

"Yeah. He was very sensitive. He didn't always really have a sense of performance in his everyday life. He was who he was. I think actors very often, they know how to present something, and that's part of their job. I think he was just really sensitive. We often used to do a lot of things together, because people were very interested in him and I think we felt safe together."

For example, he says that when he and Ledger had to introduce Ang Lee at the Directors Guild awards, Ledger refused point-blank to say anything jokey about Lee, as might have been expected at such an event. Their introduction was consequently so serious and earnest, says Gyllenhaal, that when Lee came up to the stage, he told them, "That was so gay."

Still, he also remembers how much they'd be laughing backstage at events: "For such a serious actor as Heath was, he was crazy funny. Dark funny, but funny." Out front, they came to be sobered by people's reactions, as they realized that the movie was bigger than all of them, bigger than they'd realized. Gyllenhaal tells me a strange thing about the filming, an experience he'd just rhapsodized about as so magical: "In retrospect, it just was a painful process." As though there's no reason why both memories should not be equally true. "I don't think any of us can watch it to this day," he says. "I remember talking to Michelle very recently and her being like, 'I didn't know if it was any good or not.'"

Afterward, he and Ledger stayed in close touch. "We'd talk a few times a month. I mean, he was a friend. He was like my creative partner." The news of Ledger's death came while Gyllenhaal was filming Brothers.

Could you make any sense of it at all?

A lengthy pause. "I don't really like talking about it. That period of time was... It was difficult."

What effect do you think it had on you?

"Even when we did Brokeback and stuff, it was like my work was the only thing that mattered to me. It was like I could only understand or define myself through doing that. Life, I didn't totally understand. And I think I was afraid of life. And I had success in my work, enough success that you could keep going back there. But after that happened... I think I recognized that it was work. And I recognized that this is for real."

"This" being life?

"It's for real."

What were you scared of?

"It seems to me that there are some people who go, 'All right, I'm grabbing the bull by the horns. Let's do this...,' and there are some people who it takes a while to figure out. It's an everyday struggle to be able to go, 'I'm going to follow my own instincts - I'm going to try and hear my own heart regardless...' We're getting pretty deep here. I mean, there are things that I want in my life. You can hide in your work, I guess I'm saying, or you can be alive and free and live in your work. You can pretend the people that you're going to work with for however many months are going to be the family that's going to be forever. But the truth is, they're not. And no matter what relationships you make along the way - which have been occasionally really, really influential in my life – ultimately I choose all the mishegoss, and all the complication and confusions of life, which takes courage and patience to sift through. Over the temporary moment of 'Oh, I'm comforted in the womb of this family.' I choose the other. I hate to say this, but - "Gyllenhaal smiles - "it's time to jump."

***

There is a famous scene in Brokeback Mountain where Ledger's and Gyllenhaal's characters jump together off a cliff into a river, both of them naked.

In reality, Ledger made the jump but Gyllenhaal did not. Originally the leap was to have been from a lower ledge, but Ledger wanted to go from right at the top. They were told how careful they would have to be, falling from that height, because they might hit the river's shallow bottom, and they were also warned of the hazards presented by the glacial water. Gyllenhaal realized he wasn't so sure about it. He had just been cast in Jarhead, and that shoot was starting soon. He knew that if he injured himself, he would lose the part. And he was comforted by a precedent: he remembered a story he had heard in his youth, about how Paul Newman, a family friend, hadn't actually made the leap in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He decided to let a stand-in jump in his stead.

Brokeback Mountain shirts
I ask him whether Ledger didn't, after all they had been through together, say to him, "You're wimping out on this?"

"It's interesting - he never did say that. I would have loved for him to have said that."

Would it have made you feel bad?

"Maybe. Yeah, probably. But I was actually really, really proud of myself that I didn't do it. For me, it was a great triumph. You know, there's a pressure that people put on themselves to not trust their instincts. You know, show the stunt guys I can do it, prove it to this person, prove it to that person. Who do I need to prove it to? And Heath didn't do it for any of those reasons - he did it because he wanted to jump."

Do you at all regret not doing it now?

"Yeah. But that's me now."

Yes, KD Lang did a couple of country-flavored albums, but even back then before she became more of a torch singer I didn't think of her as a country star. She was never a part of the Nashville crowd/establishment, she was a Canadian artist who liked to do a little bit of everything. I saw in concert in her very early days before she really crossed over, and I'd say 3/4 of the audience was made up of gay women.

So he decides to wear them again after not for several years, big deal I have done the same. I bet the rings he are wearing now are the same ones he wore back in 2002 - 2005, not all but some look the same.

Maybe he got sentimental, he wore them at a time when his parents were still together happier times maybe?, and at least one of the pinky rings came from Mom.

I saw her too, and I would say you are right! It was lovely.

She comes from Alberta, which has a Western tradition. Absolute Torch and Twang was huge when it came out, on the country scene. Her voice was amazing, so I would classify her in the beginning as a Country star, maybe more Western than Country. She used to say that Patsy Cline was a big influence on her singing. That's where I first discovered her music. I don't think she ever hid her sexuality, and I don't know if that interfered with her success in the conservative Country genre or not. I thought I read somewhere where she said it didn't.

KD Lang was always out. And it's been a lot of years, so I could be remembering wrong, but it seems like there was some issues with her not being accepted by the country music establishement, and the producer of her Patsy Cline inspired album coming to her defense.

I do agree a lot of her early music is country/western in style, so maybe what I said was a bit misleading. I was really trying to say that she was never viewed as a Country Artist by Nashville, and I don't think most of her early fans were the typical country music fans either. For exaple, she's been nominated and won a number of Grammy's, but I don't recall her being nominated or winnning any CMAs.

She also very quickly moved on to other kinds of music. I have no idea whether that was because of her interests or the difficulty of being out and doing country music. It would be interesting to know.

Ricky Martin's Coming Out? 'Annoying' said...

For me, [Ricky Martin] coming out was not a brave act - it was annoying. First of all, we all knew, second it’s not going to hurt you in any way.

I want to see someone out from the beginning and see what happens. Because I think it is detrimental — it does hurt you. Everyone I know that’s gay that does comedy or is an out actor from the beginning — they’re not famous, they’re not rich — they’re struggling. But you need to make a decision-do you want to be free? What’s your priority? … I think [Rupert Everett] has a point. I think that there’s disdain for homosexuality in this culture and in show business even though it’s run by gays. You need to be able to at least look like you could be straight and if you can look like that then you can still get work, like Portia DeRossi does. But if you can’t pass then you’re screwed."

Remember, Jake where "the closet" name comes from. People/family members who had secrets i.e. "skeletons in the closet." Skeletons are dead bones stripped of all signs of life that make a human, a person.

Anonymous said...

What is wrong with Julie Goldman?

Anonymous said...

I don't think anything is wrong with Julie Goldman or what she said. IMO she's saying let's get a person who's totally out and see how their career goes from the start: I want to see someone out from the beginning and see what happens. Most if not all actors if they come out, do it when they're already established and have a fan base and the studios don't want to lose their business. Even Matt Boner isn't totally out. Cheyenne Jackson IIRC from an earlier comment/link, played the straight game in the beginning. IA with Goldman, if an actor is out at the start it hurts them. The problem is that we will probably never know the details of it, because we would probably never hear of them; they won't be famous because they will be held back by the gays who run HW.

Anonymous said...

IMO every person who trashes gay person's coming out deserves a kick in the butt.

Anonymous said...

Two kicks in the butt if the person is gay.

Anonymous said...

Well IMO she's not "trashing" his coming out, she's saying that Ricky Martin being gay was no surprise, it took him long enough, and his career, fanbase and standing in the arts community isn't threatened. He really didn't take a risk; he did it when it was all clear and safe.

Anonymous said...

Julie Goldman said: "For me, [Ricky Martin] coming out was not a brave act - it was annoying."

Theatre, Broadway, TV - a lot of gay actors who are openly gay from the start.

Anonymous said...

Tbh I agree with her it was annoying, both him and Clay Aiken, lol. It's like catching a kid with his hands in the cookie jar, but he adamantly insists over and over that he didn't touch the jar, was never near it, and you were imagining things. Then finally FINALLY FINALLY after a lot of questions and evidence from you and constant denials from him he admits it, yes he was in the cookie jar. Is that brave, finally copping to the truth that was apparent to everyone? No. Is it annoying, that it frigging took so long for the kid to admit to the obvious? Yes.

Great! Now coming out is annoying. Who needs enemies with gays who don't give a fuck about gays.

Anonymous said...

Julie Goldman could've made her point that it's riskier to be out right from the beginning without the cheap shot about Ricky's coming out being "annoying." But she chose to be snarky on purpose because that makes for a better sound bite. Would she have preferred that Ricky didn't come out publicly? And I hate all the b.s. about "we all knew" and "it's not going to hurt you." No one should ever be put down or scorned in any way for making the decision to come out. It's not about whether people "knew" or how much it will hurt your career - it's about living an honest and open life. It sounds a bit like she's trying to make a contest of it - who is hurting the most - and that's pretty sad.

Sophia Bush and Austin Nichols, who haven't exactly been sly in hiding their "romance" over the last year or so, were out and about together again this weekend.

Nichols, who totally loves being outdoorsy (bike rides with bestie Jake Gyllenhaal, anyone?) took his ladylove to Runyon Canyon Saturday.

So just how sweaty did the two get?

We're told the two babes looked fabo as they hiked the sceney canyon—sceney as in the beautiful views and the crowd. Runyon Canyon isn't exactly a grueling workout, folks, but is totally gorge. It's basically become the new Ivy with all the celebs who frequent it.

Bush, in black workout pants, a red tank and a red hat had her pretty, dark locks up in a ponytail while Austin, who was right by her side, was wearing a hat and sunglasses.

Each babe had a pit bull pup in tow as our source spotted the couple walking down the canyon.

"They didn't look lovey-dovey at all," blabs our female workout spy. "They were just walking side by side, not really talking. [Sophia] definitely gave me the staredown when I spotted them though."

Hmmm, maybe S.B. thought our pretty source was eyeing her man and wasn't too pleased?

Either way, we think Sophia and Austin have a few more public engagements to come.

Like maybe perhaps a Supernatural wedding of some kind on May 15? Wonder if these two are serious enough to be each other's wedding dates, though.

ITA. It's one thing to critique HW and talk about the realities, another to be nasty about someone's coming out.

Like Rupert, sounds like she can't distinguish between the homophobia and other factors at work. You can see that from the way she talks about Portia. Whether you're gay or straight, you're not going to be get leading man/woman roles if you don't look a certain way, especially women. Is it fair? Probably not? But it's not homophobia.

And change has to start somewhere, and what better place than with people who have power and money, and won't be so easy to kick to the curb when they come out. Change has to come from both directions, the very top and the very bottom. We need the Rickys as much as we need the Adams.

Exclusive Jake Gyllenhaal Interview: The Ass-Kicking Artist Currently Known as Prince of Persia said...

The other night, as I was sitting in my darkening office, Jake Gyllenhaal called. Even though the call was “scheduled,” I didn’t really expect this artist-turning-action-hero to have the time to talk to me since he was about to leave for a global press tour. I was convinced I was going to be rescheduled. I have never been so glad to be wrong because he was everything I expected: smart, articulate, and charming. Nonetheless, there was something that took me by surprise: how much he laughed at himself. For all his accomplishments and over-the-top talent, this is not a guy who takes himself too seriously. I think that’s a good omen for his next film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, because for me, anyway, self-seriousness is the death knell for an action film. I go to an action movie to channel my inner thirteen-year-old old boy, not ponder the meaning of life.
...
JULINA: Tell me about the different styles of Duncan Jones, who directed you in Source Code, and Mike Newell.

JAKE: Oh my gosh, every director than I have had the pleasure to work with has been so different in their style. So Mike Newell, just physically … they both happen to be British, but Duncan spent a lot of time growing up in the States and all over the world so he has a different sort of sensibility than Mike. Well, Mike is like six foot five, and Duncan is like five ten or something, so [laughs] that is one major difference. And in a way, their sizes mimic their styles, because Mike is very robust and dramatic in his approach and he’s like (in a gruff British voice), “Oh yes, my dear boy, it’s fantastic,” and there’s always this sort of energy to it. Duncan really creates this space that is much more quiet, and I would say that there is a serenity to the way he directs, and to me it’s fascinating that the two of them could not be more different. That’s actually a really good question. They had two different beasts [to direct], you know?

Mike had a movie where there are just so many elements that he had to balance, and I learned from him a really important lesson that every actor should know; he said, “You know what I look at more than the monitor?,” and I said “No, what Mike?” And he pointed to his watch. When I asked ”Really?,” he said, “You never get all the things you want as a director, and you’re always chasing time.” Any actor who is in sync with their director knows you want to try to give your director everything that they want within the day. And that’s something that I really learned with Mike. It is something that I don’t think that actors really know: how much a director is dealing with. So when I went to work with Duncan I brought that mentality with me, and it was like, “What do we need? Did we get that? OK, what do you need from me? Let’s go.”

JULINA: Interesting. Is there room on either of their sets to discover as you go? Doug [Liman] talks about his process that he is inventing and reinventing all of the time, essentially, in pursuit of the movie — you haven’t gotten to work with him on set yet, but you have got a good idea of what he is like to work with as you’ve been developing his Untitled Moon Project over the past couple of years.

JAKE: Yes, definitely.

Evan Lysacek Says He Lashed Out at Johnny Weir Because Weir Questioned His Sexuality

Evan Lysacek tells Us magazine that he "never should have answered" the recent question from MetroMix magazine on why Johnny Weir wasn't chosen for the "Stars on Ice" tour.

If you remember, Lysacek said, "'Stars on Ice' is really selective of who they hire and they only hire the best of the best to skate. It would’ve been hard of them to justify hiring him, and I think he was really upset because he wanted the financial benefit of the tour. A lot of us in the skating world were really disappointed in the way he reacted, basically whining that he wasn’t chosen."

Lysacek tells Us: "[Johnny Weir] is an accomplished and talented skater...Since the Olympics, I've dealt with Johnny's questioning my integrity and sexuality, and I've never spoken out on my own behalf no matter how hurtful those things may have been. I should have known better...Best wishes and congratulations to Johnny as he opens the new season of Ice Theatre of New York. I wish him well in all of his future endeavors.

James Franco refused to answer a question regarding his sexuality at the premiere of his documentary 'Saturday Night'.

"One of the guests asked James a few things that alluded to his sexuality," says a panel-goer, explaining that the line of questioning was in regards to Franco's on-camera kiss with Will Forte on "SNL." "Franco's rep stopped him from answering, and the crowd got really uncomfortable."

But Franco didn't seem to mind: "Will and James were taking pictures of themselves with a Polaroid at the afterparty [at 48 Lounge]," says a spy. "And then James turned to Will and joked, ‘Uh-oh, this one is going to make people talk!' Will even told a passerby, 'James is a very passionate kisser!'"

Jake Gyllenhaal

"I shot Jake in Toronto in 2005. He was there for Brokeback Mountain and there was alot of buzz around him," Garfunkel remembers of a playful Gyllenhaal. "Anne Hathaway, Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were all in the room while I was shooting and someone came in and told them they had just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. They were all jumping up and down."

This and This. Not wanting to come out publicly is one thing - but actively and relentlessly manipulating the media and the clueless public is pretty low. And if that's not bad enough, purposely staying clear of anything remotely involving support for gay causes - especially when you used to be politically vocal and supportive - is even worse.

I agree one hundred percent. I don't approve of bearding by anyone, but I'm willing to cut Franco (who I really like) some slack for those very reasons. By doing all those things Franco has a sexually ambiguous image, despite the "girlfriend"--an image Jake used to have before he burned it to the ground with Reeke.

I'll also throw in another one--the fact that some of Jake's success is due the support of his gay fans and the gay community that helped make BBM a success. Without BBM Jake wouldn't be where he is today.

I also think it is horribly wrong to beard when you have a child with your gay partner.

James Franco Stays Away From The Gay Question said...

Performance fartist, Yale student and sometimes actor James Franco refused to answer a question regarding his sexuality at a Q&A for his documentary Saturday Night at the Tribeca Film Festival. Bitch dodged that shit like he was Vanilla and the question was a yarmulke.

Apparently, some nosy ass ho in the audience asked James about a dude-on-dude kiss he shared with Will Forte on SNL. James' publicist shot the question down and told James to keep all his lips shut. A witness tells Gatecrasher, "One of the guests asked James a few things that alluded to his sexuality. Franco's rep stopped him from answering, and the crowd got really uncomfortable."

The witness says that James later laughed about it with Will while they took pictures of themselves at the after-party, "And then James turned to Will and joked, ‘Uh-oh, this one is going to make people talk!' Will even told a passerby, 'James is a very passionate kisser!'"

How rude and disrespectful of that bitch to ask James such a personal question! If James prefers the cock to the cooch (or vice versa), it's still not going to stop hos from massaging their fuck parts to his movies.

That dumb bitch should've asked something more important like: "James, is your peen shaped more like a burrito, a taquito or a churro?" Or: "James, can you please show us the face you make when you're about to nud all over a pair of succulent ass cheeks? Oh, and can you scream 'Here comes the fiesta, bitch!' right before you make that face? Thanks."

Those are the kind of questions that will further our cause. Not the stupid gay question. I swear, some people are so fucking tacky.

Lily Tomlin Could've Made This Whole Business of Coming Out on Magazines So Passe. In 1975 said...

Newly out country western singer Chely Wright is proudly announcing her lesbianism on the covers of People, Curve, and The Advocate magazine. But commedienne Lily Tomlin could have been Time magazine's first "Yep, I'm Gay" cover almost 35 years ago. 'Cept, she didn't.

"I was more insulted than anything. I felt it was a bribe: 'We need a gay person, and we'll take anybody!'" says Tomlin of the offer — which she turned down after her friend Vito Russo advised her that it might, yup, affect her career.

But it's not like Tomlin was closeted at the time. Just not "on the cover of magazines out." She was already living openly with her still-partner Jane Wagner and all but admitting her homosexuality in sketches on her 1975 comedy album Moden Scream.

Then she made it all up on Time's cover two years later in an article, which focused on her work and called Wagner her "friend and collaborator." That's so Annie + Susan, isn't it?

If you're right and they did spend time together why go to such lengths to hide it? No one thought they were more than friends. Sure, there were gay rumors about Jake but they had nothing to do with Heath but everything to do with Austin, still Jake continued to hang out in public with him till September 2007 I think (basketball games, bike riding, out for coffee, bookstore pics). So why the paranoia with Jake/Heath? I don’t get it.

They didn't hide anything, there is nothing special or suspicious about visiting friends in their homes or going to private parties.

Heath's and Jake's favourite film of 2007 was "Once". Jake wore Heath's Dior jumper on the cover of Interview. (Or it was an identical one, but that would be one hell of a coincidence, because Heath wore that pullover 2005/06 and Jake's cover was in 2007). And on top of all that Jake confirmed that they kept in touch and were friends irl. So...

Anonymous said...

No one thought they were more than friends.

I wouldn't say no one. When Heath and Michelle broke up there was a report (on a tv show about celebs) about the break up and they "joked" Heath left Michelle for Jake. It was an attempt to be funny.

Re. Austin/Jake. Outside of internet no one knows (or rarely anyone knows) about Jake/Austin connection, but so many people know about Jake, Heath and BBM.

6:27 PM, see, that and everything else is conjectural. No real proof they saw each other. That's exactly my point. If we didn’t fallow Jake closely we wouldn’t know about the seater, Once, etc. If they did hang out, it's weird that nothing about it leaked to the press IMO.

But who outside of certain internet gossip sites knows of Jake & Austin? I don't think magazines were so interested to get a shot of them and when they did, the pics were ignored, except for TBers. Now, if we had a Jake & Heath pic (pics), that would cause much more interest and speculation. I'm sure of it.

Ok, I get it, we have people who doubt they were friends/in touch in real life and don't believe what Jake said. That's why we have to agree to disagree about the issue.

Anonymous said...

Now, if we had a Jake & Heath pic (pics), that would cause much more interest and speculation. I'm sure of it.

Interest, absolutely. Speculation, no. There was no speculation about them when Heath was alive, only jokes that no one took seriously.

You underestimate the power of the internet. It doesn’t matter if Jake/Austin story didn’t go mainstream, the fact is the speculation was huge at the time so it would’ve made a lot more sense if Jake stopped being seen in public with his supposed boyfriend than avoid it with a simple friend/costar.

Anonymous said...

Look at youtube, so many J/H shipping videos. Or the report that Jake took Heath's death harder than most. Why did they do that you think? Because they still associated them with their movie characters.

Bottom Line: I absolutely believe what Jake said regarding Heath in GQ.

Anonymous said...

Because they still associated them with their movie characters.

But they are not their characters and they never were.

Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar were book/movie characters.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are/were real people who went on to lead their own personal lives.

But some cannot seem to separate the movie from real life.

Anonymous said...

I think Jake and Heath didn't have too much time to nurture their friendship. Like a poster above said, Heath died only a couple of years after BBM.
Jake was in LA and Heath was settled in NY. Both had very busy careers and complicated private lives so, if they didn't get to meet together very often,i'm sure it was more because of lack of time than anything else.

Anonymous said...

If Heath didn't want to keep in touch with Jake after BBM, he wouldn't have made him a symbolic/celeb godfather to M.. This would require Jake to keep in touch with them, at least every once in a while. Or it was all Michelle's idea? Who knows?

Anonymous said...

^^
I've read that it was Michelle's idea but that Heath was more than happy with the choice.

It doesn't really mean that they HAD to keep in contact, but it does mean that the three of them liked each other very much and shared a bond that didn't care to hide for the public or the media... until everything went to shit between H & M,at least.

I don't really think there is too much left to spill. They hooked up and became parents too soon, with all the pressures and responsabilities that the situation brings. Their busy shedules and spending too much time appart didn't help them either to build a strong relationship and eventually they broke up. Heath got depressed for not seeing his daughter every day and thought some pills would help him to cope with the sadness of losing baby and fiancee. He killed himself accidentally by doing so.

The End.

Anonymous said...

Heath got depressed for not seeing his daughter every day and thought some pills would help him to cope with the sadness of losing baby and fiancee.

Baby, yes. Michelle, no. I 100% believe that Terry Gilliam told the truth that Heath realized they were mismatched during BBM award season. I think Heath got depressed during their relationship and the drug problem became worse, because he tried to make it work for the baby with someone he didn't want to be with. After the break up, I do think he tried to get his act together for the baby, but unfortunately...
Michelle herself said that it wasn't her who wanted their relationship to end, if you read the Vogue interview.

Anonymous said...

Michelle didn't say that. And figuring out that your are a mismatch with someone you care can make you feel very depressed. we don't always choose who we love.
I really think there isn't too much mistery into the tragic death of Heath, that''s all. And is not like i'm a Heath/Michelle shipper so... i really don't care very much.

I'll also throw in another one--the fact that some of Jake's success is due the support of his gay fans and the gay community that helped make BBM a success. Without BBM Jake wouldn't be where he is today.

Oh so true Destiny. I keep remembering the finger he gave to those fans as he huged his lady love reese at cockroachella.

Heath got depressed for not seeing his daughter every day and thought some pills would help him to cope with the sadness of losing baby and fiancee.

I think Heath was relieved to "lose" Michelle. After only one year together he was already cheating on her. When they both went to Montreal to shoot I’m Not There Heath was coming on to women in clubs/bars, probably hooking up with them too.

He was attractive, talented, generous, most likely a great lover, but he wasn't made for long time relationships. He got bored easily and moved on, when his girlfriends didn’t he cheated on them.

Really? That "embrace" sealed the deal for me about Jake's gayness.

Jeez, there is more sexual chemistry when i hug my granpa..

ok, that didn't sound right, but you know what i meant...

Vogue scan: interview

The interviewer said, it's pretty clear that Michelle did not want to lose him. And there's also the Elle interview from 2008 before Heath died (posted dozens of times) where she said that she didn't expect Heath to break her heart.

He has a history of drug use, but it did seem to get worse during his relationship with Michelle. She probably wanted to save the relationship and help him, but he left. I think she did use his drug use after the break up to hinder him from seeing Matilda, hence him trying to get clean.

8:51 PM, it was a bar girl or waitress he tried to hook up with, but she decided against, cause she had a bf she really loved. But she was thinking about it, becaue he was HL after all.

lol, yes I sure do know what you mean. There was never even a smidgen of sexual chemistry between those two and that's something you just can't fake - I don't care how good an actor you are. You can smile, you can hold hands, you can pretend to kiss, you can do the piggyback thing, you can hug, you can even rub your finger in an ass, lol, but if it's not there, it's not there. And it wasn't there.

That’s it. It must have been hard for that girl to turn him down, but she can be proud or sorry for being, I'm sure, one of very, very few who refused him. Like it was said before, Heath was a dog.

Damn, that Elle 2008 MW's interview is the most pretentious pile of crap i've read in the last years. And I've read all the Reeke tabloid stories!
Heraclitous??! It's a fucking fashion magazine you are talking to, you dumb bitch!

LMAO. Michelle always wants to come off/sound intelligent. I think she's an insecure (in many regards) and clingy person.

If she has it (the knowledge),
why not flaunt it?

Googling Heraclitous and mention it in a conversation out of nowhere is far for being called "knowledge"

Even I considered touching Jake's penis, and I'm straight!
