Liza Richardson: What did you bring to play today?

Jake Gyllenhaal: I brought a few songs that have inspired me in different ways. Some in the car, some on set -- a movie set, and some in bed.

LR: Those are the categories. Which one of these do you listen to on the set?

JG: Actually, I just did this movie with Jim Sheridan called "Brothers" and randomly he picked this song "The River," by Bruce Springsteen. He picked the live version. During rehearsals he would play it, and then he would play it on set too to get us in the mood of the scene, or he would play it in the middle of the scene. And so there’s this scene in the film where my brother has died and I am with his wife. We don’t get along very well, but as the movie has progressed we’ve started to get along better. We’re sitting together in front of a fire and we end up kissing at the end of the scene, which makes the movie very complex, and Jim decided to play this song, play "The River."

Song: "The River (live)" by Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band

JG: And what he did after that was he kept the music rolling and Natalie Portman, who plays my brother’s wife in the movie, she leaves the scene. Jim kept the film rolling on and on and on and I just kept listening to this song and by the end of this take, I just start to cry and cry, I couldn’t stop crying. I think a lot of it has to do with, it’s connection to my family, listening to Bruce Springsteen when I was a kid with my dad. My first concert I ever went to was the Born in the USA tour concert and I remember being with my father. I just think the story between father and son and the complications between those two positions in a family has always been a huge thing in my life. That’s also the heart of the movie I was making with Jim Sheridan.

LR: So that’s "The River," it’s the choice of our guest DJ, Jake Gyllenhaal, and it’s by Bruce Springsteen. So what’s the next thing?

JG: I would pick "The Fox" and this version is by Burl Ives. My father used to sing this to me -- and I love Burl Ives just as a character, just as a musician -- and when I was a little kid we were robbed outside of our house. We were driving home, we pulled up and we were robbed and ever since I was always really nervous about falling asleep, you know, naturally, and so my dad would sing this to me before I’d go to bed.

Song: "The Fox" by Burl Ives

JG: My father, has this guild guitar, which he still has, beautiful kind of mahogany color, and again it comes back to my father who was a big musical influence on me when I was a kid and continues to be. There are songs that I remember listening to in the car with my dad, you know, coming back from baseball or even just him throwing me in the car and being like, 'You gotta hear this song! You gotta hear this song!' He’s very animated with his hands and *starts to imitate his father’s voice* he wants me to hear this one part right here!

"Ugly Betty's plotlines this season veer from the outrageously cartoonish (Daniel Meade joins a cult; Betty dresses like a giant hot dog) to the grittily real (Justin Suarez battles homophobia at school; Claire Meade tracks down her lost son). Episodes that find a way to cleverly merge the two are always excellent, and last night the show recovered from its sluggish previous week with an energetic hour that was nearly as sharp as Marc's best line: "This ménage au moi has got to stop," he says, of feeling split between bosses Wilhelmina and Daniel. "I hate being in the middle. Unless there's a Gyllenhaal involved."

Jim Sheridan ('Brothers')

Q: You've previously said that Jake Gyllenhaal drove you mad at points - did you find a way to cope with each other in the end?

Sheridan: "Yes, I think we both realised we'd always be fighting to be the centre of attention - two mammie's boys it's called on the set! But he's a sweetheart and after I'd got used to him I adored him. He's easy to work with."

I guess it's a good things Tobey and Jake played rivaling brothers instead of lovers. LOL.

How could you say that? Tensions between Jake and Tobey would result in hot gay sex ... scenes.

Anonymous said...

^^Didn't think about that. Yeah, maybe. ;)
But I think I prefered the affection between E & J/H & J and the kissing and cuddling scenes rather than that sex scene.

I really disliked Tobey in Brothers, and normally I like him. Jim and Jake may have clashed, but Jake is by far the best thing about the film. Kids are good too.

Interview: Cheyenne Jackson Reveals His Secret Shame (Kissing Canadians and Watching "Real Housewives"!)

...
AE: Does it ever get hard chasing the next gig, trying to sell yourself?
CJ: You know it’s a little of both. It’s part of the excitement of it — the excitement of not knowing where your next job is is exhilarating and terrifying.

Like today, I’m going to a call-back in a second for something and, you know, it’s terrifying, because if it doesn’t happen, then that means it’s not that, but it’s going to be something else. It’s exhilarating because I could get it and then things could change. It’s definitely a mix of both for me. As you get older, you still have to audition. You still have to go on the road and prove to them that you’re the guy. Sometimes I think gay actors especially, the few of us that are openly gay maybe have a little extra to prove. I feel like things are changing though.

AE: Things are changing, but I have talked to many actors who are so tight-lipped – we don’t out anyone or stoop to gossip, but many don’t want to talk.
CJ: And also there’s a trend lately that’s a little bit disturbing to me, and that’s people speaking out and saying that it’s better for young gay actors to stay in the closet.

AE: Talk about how the Internet has changed how actors feel about their privacy: where do you draw that line? People who are your fans and who pay to see you perform, how much do they deserve to know, what can they expect? You and your partner are in the limelight and your partner doesn’t want that.
CJ: Right. It’s a gray area, and it’s up to each person to draw that line for them. I’ve made the decision to be completely open, honest, what you see is what you get when it comes to me.

But when it comes to [my partner] Monte and my personal relationship with him, that’s off limits. It’s difficult because he’s at every event with me and he’s there, and someone says, “Why don’t you bring your partner,” and I keep saying, “He’s at everything.” You just see his arm or the side of his head.

To answer one of your questions, what their right is or what are they owed: fans are so important because they’re the ones that support you and the throngs of people at stage doors after shows when you’re signing autographs, if those people weren’t there, you wouldn’t be on stage doing your job. From the very beginning, when I very first started on Broadway, I decided that my job isn’t done when the curtain goes down. My job is done when I sign everybody’s autograph and take everybody’s pictures and then walk down the street. I feel like that’s the least that I can do.

But after that, then it’s my time. That isn’t to say that if someone comes up to me on the street and says something, I’m going to be like, “F**k you!” But I definitely value my privacy and value my relationship and my time. As I’ve gotten a little more of a modicum of success in New York and visibility, it becomes a little more difficult especially because now Monte, you know people know who he is now or what he looks like and will write on blogs, “I saw Monte and Cheyenne at the gym and they were wearing this . . .” and it makes just you feel really kind of exposed and strange – you just have to deal with it though.

The whole Chris Colfer thing — these kids and they’re so young. I just never believe in outing people. I never believe in forcing them to do something until they’re ready. It’s nobody’s business. I don’t like all the blogs — it’s like this witch-hunt. Everybody has their own journey. Everybody has to do it in their own time. But that’s for the person to set, their own parameters.
...

Interview: Cheyenne Jackson

Cheyenne Jackson said...

AE: Do you read about yourself online?
CJ: No. I read interviews that I do or press that I have a stake in, definitely, but I don’t read like the Broadway message boards or chatrooms.

About two years ago is when I finally put the kibosh on that. It’s just too hard. Once you start getting so caught up in that, you can’t get it out of your head. You can hear ten nice things, but if two people write that you’re a useless piece of shit and should never be on the stage again or whatever, that’s the thing that sticks with you, and you have realize if you believe the good you have to believe the bad.

So, no, for the most part – occasionally someone will say, “Hey, you’re on Perez Hilton!” And I’ll – curiosity will get the best of me and I’ll go look it up, but no, it’s much better to embrace the phrase, “Your opinion of me is none of my business.”

Fixed! :)

"Natalie was old friends with both her co-stars, having known Maguire since she was 14 and after once dating Gyllenhaal. So whenever there was any tension on set she automatically became the peacemaker.

"I don't like fighting so I was a sort of mediator," she laughs. "And boys can be such girls sometimes."

I can understand that, but having the same rights as heterosexuals should be the most important goal.

ITA. The sibling relationship is that of a blood relative, so that includes certain rights. Straight unmarried couples don't have the same rights of married couples either. But I agree that people should have the right to live the way they want to, not have to conform to any societal ideal. But you should be able to if you want to. You can't have everything - marriage rights are for those who are committed, and want to be in a monogamous relationship, whether gay or straight. Modern straight marriage doesn't mean that each partner has to conform to a certain role, it means a couple wants a committed relationship - and that straight model doesn't apply to gay couples at all.

Sandra Bullock, Clooney and other stars have donated each a million too. It's very generous that they did. Of cource they announce it, it's also good for publicity. I wonder if some celbes out there donated w/o announcing it? It doesn't matter, what matters is they donated. :)

Anonymous said...

I agree.

Anonymous said...

I don't know - I don't think promiscuity should come with rights, and I don't think that just because one is homosexual, that automatically implies that one "tomcats" around, is promiscuous and doesn't want a monogamous relationship. It's a stereotype. Some do, some don't, same as straight couples. Marital rights are for those who are married, whether gay or straight. If they want to have partners on the side, they still can. Some straight married couples have been doing that for ages, with or without partner knowledge! If it doesn't work out, you separate or get a divorce, like straight married couples have been doing for ages also.

I think if you go just below the surface of that guy who commented he wants to marry a woman to procreate, you'll find someone who has an anti-gay marriage agenda. A gay couple can have children of their own.

Serious question for research:

When anyone here was in grade school or junior high, did rubbing/circling/poking your finger against the palm of someone you were holding hands with, mean anything????

Or was this just a fad for my generation or school, lol? For us, it was supposed to mean that that person wanted to do you.

Hey, and no cracks about people from Kansas, lol.

prairiegirl said...

And I did google it from several different kinds of searches but all I'm getting is massages, body language, and the like. That's why I'm beginning to wonder if it was just "us", as in "at my school, during that period of time", which is really embarrassing to admit but oh well.

Not during holding hands but poking your (middle, I think) finger against their palm while shaking hands, yes.

^^Okay, I saw that in my google search on questionable handshakes, lol.

Oh oh. I may be the only one who experienced this. Maybe somebody was pulling my leg. LOLLLLLL! Crap.

My dearest female friend is living with a man who, when he shakes my fiance”s and my brother’s hand, tickles their palm with his middle finger. What on earth does that mean? He’s done it 3 times to my fiance!!!! For the love of God HELP!!! He also likes Boy George, clothes, and rearranging the furniture.

LOL said...

We did that on the playground when I was a kid.
We innocently referred to it as “The French Handshake.”
It meant that we liked someone and would love to have sex with them.
Unfortunately at the time, none of us really knew the actual mechanics of sex.
