The Price of Success

July 13, 2009

At Outfest on Sunday afternoon, three-time Emmy winning and openly gay director Todd Holland told a small audience that he advises young, gay male actors to "stay in the closet." The remark came during a panel at the Directors Guild of America titled, "Taking It to the Streets: LGBT Directors Get Political." Outfest, which pushes the slogan "protecting our past, showcasing our present, nurturing our future," is one of the premiere gay and lesbian film festivals in the United States.

Holland, who was talking as one of the featured panelists, and who once worked as a director on the critically acclaimed HBO sit-com The Larry Sanders Show, explained that it's a necessary career choice if a gay actor wants to succeed in Hollywood.

Fellow panelist and filmmaker Kirby Dick, director of Outrage, a 2009 documentary about gay politicians who stay in the closet to further their political careers, told Holland: "I know where you're coming from, but it's a regressive argument."

Holland, who was legally married before Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in November, responded that he was just being realistic, but Dick, who is heterosexual, believed that if "an A-list actor came out, it would have more impact on the culture than an A-list politician."

No one talked about the personal repercussions of a gay actor succeeding in Hollywood by lying about his sexual orientation to the general public.

Holland's comments underscore a decades old problem in Hollywood, where gay and straight studio executives, agents, and other major players often advise up-and-coming gay, male actors to live in the closet. Rarely, though, has someone like Holland been so public with that advice.

Besides Holland and Dick, "Taking It to the Streets" featured filmmakers Jamie Babbit, Katherine Brooks, Frieda Lee Mock and Charles Herman-Wurmfield, and was billed as a discussion about how gay and lesbian filmmakers "are taking a more active role in creating social and political change."

One audience member, openly gay filmmaker Matthew Mishory, later told Queer Town that Holland's mind set is pervasive throughout the entertainment business.

"This stuff doesn't just extend to actors," says Mishory. "We've been told, as gay filmmakers, not tell queer stories or else we'll get pigeonholed."

Mishory has just finished a film about legendary gay director Derek Jarman called Delphinium. Through that work, Mishory has come to believe that "the promise of the New Queer Cinema of the 1980s and 1990s has not necessarily been delivered."

Before the panelists started their discussion, blogger and lesbian filmmaker J.D. Disalvatore warned Outfest crowds on her blog, The Smoking Cocktail, that several of the filmmakers "were not particularly political, so looking forward to seeing what they pull out of their asses for this one."

A few hours later, the 47-year-old Todd Holland publicly shared his "advice," with young, gay and lesbian filmmakers sitting in the audience. One person who heard the remark, and didn't want to be identified, told Queer Town, "What kind of message is that for an older gay filmmaker to send to young gay filmmakers? It's the kind of thing that will keep people in the closet."

That is Jack posting on the "gay" site. He stumbled over there from DL. Reese is scoring major points for getting wasted!

Are you mistaking Jack for a 20-something gay guy yet? LOL

Anonymous said...

Jack is troll, he can be whatever he wants to be online.

Anonymous said...

Reese is scoring major points for getting wasted!

Of course she is!
Even some guy on gay porn forum was happy to see her drunk. LOL!

Anonymous said...

There has also been speculation of Reese’s “boyfriend” Jake Gyllenhaal being gay, so maybe their entire relationship is a big sham. Is Reese his beard?

Yes. :)

Anonymous said...

The person was happy to see her having a good time for once, thought she was acting cool for once and not as a tight wad.

There are well over a thousand registered users in that forum, the guys posting on the Jake threads can't all be Jack, stop playing stupid. They post pics of themselves and heir BF's. If that's the case Jack is a gay male from NY/FL/LA/Boston/UK, is Black/white/asian/russian and is between 18-55, because that is the profiles and pictures that are on the Jake thread.

Even when TT started guys on that site and other actual gay sites showed little or no interest in Jake, the only "peak" time was when BBM and Jarhead came out.

There are tons of sites out there that you are not aware of, ONTD, ent lawyer, MK, Ted, Perez, Lainey FCC, Jared and the obscure gossip blogs that pop on google are not even 5% of what's out there.

Just interesting that on actual gay blogs where the posters are gay men that there is little tono interest in bubble boy.

The posters here, OMG, ent, perez, mk,ontd, gb, wdw,dc,jj,ted and ihj
are mostly female and straight.

Anonymous said...

No one suggested anything like that, stop playing stupid.

Just interesting that on actual gay blogs where the posters are gay men that there is little to no interest in bubble boy.

Why did you expect gays to be interested in Jake?

Anonymous said...

12:41: You have got to be kidding me? A closeted actor in HW that is yakked about on blogs? The same gays that you don't think to be interested in Jake but they have threads on Cruise, Smith, Franco, Hayden, Wenty, etc discussing if they are gay or in the closet?? And the only threads that exists on this site and a few others are of guys posting pics of Jake and saying he is hot or a few Jake and Reese pics.

They must have heard all the Jake is gay and bearding stuff and yet there seems to e little or no interest.

It sems to me that most of the JIG crowd are straight women, that would explain the lack of discusiion on actual gay sites for the most part.

Anonymous said...

That explanation is pure bullshit, someting trolly would use as the "argument".

Jake isn't interesting or hot enough to be subject of their discussions.

I guess the fangirl at 1:12 thinks they wil be yakking about him once Pop comes out, LOL!!!

Anonymous said...

A lot of gays love big muscles so maybe they'll forgive him that bad PoP hairdo :)

Anonymous said...

"Meaning?"

I mean when (if?) he gets better known, there'll be more interest. He has been kind of low key filming all of 2008 and hanging out with Reese. Nothing intersting. This could change when he starts doing promo work and if some of his movies are hits, interest in him will increase.

Anonymous said...

I think only PoP promotion will make the difference, impossible to say how long will people remember PoP and Jake after the release day.

hm... said...

No one knows if successful PoP would help or damage Jake's career.

Brendan Fraser - The Mummy was success
George Clooney - Batman & Robin is a bad movie with bad box office.

Blind Item Reveals

Quite honestly this is one of the best pieces of gossip I have heard in the past six months. I actually heard about it on Friday and was so jazzed by it that I almost posted over the weekend because I didn't want to wait until today.

These A+ list female film actresses (when I say A+, there is no wishy washy, they are A+) are really different, but they do have one very big thing in common. A woman. That's right. While one of the A+ listers is no stranger to women, the other A+ lister is, or would have the world believe she is. However, each of our A+ listers separately spent several months with a woman who must be magnificent or beautiful or extremely talented in the bedroom to attract the interest of these A+ listers. The only thing these two A+ listers have in common is the huge amount of money they get for making films. The fact that these two completely different personalities and looks could both fall for the same woman just boggles the mind. That, and the fact that at least one of the A+ listers has never shown a propensity to spend time with the same team. This one blew me away.

One of the two is Angelina Jolie

A lot of WFT posters were gay men and women and some of them still post on OMG.

OMG is run by gay women.

No, OMG is run by Special K, who is a straight woman.

Anonymous said...

OMG=Wicked is gay. I think SK has identified herself as straight, if she was gay she would have said it. She pretty much runs that blog so OMG like WFT is run by a straight woman.

Have no clue about "Jackie". Most of the posters overwhelming here and OMG are straight women, some married with kids.

Anonymous said...

How convenient that some poster wants us all to know ;ake is supposed not believed to be gay on some thread about him on a gay porn site, but they won't give us the site, even though it sound like you have to register to post.

And here's a news flash for you, not all gay men are into gossip, a lot of them only care whether any actor is hot.

Anonymous said...

OMG=Wicked is gay. I think SK has identified herself as straight

They are both gay.

Even if they were both straight it wouldn't make Jake less gay.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

LOL!!! Silly fangirls thought they were posting on gay logs, LOL!!! Most of you have sterotypical views of gay men like most hags and hate other women as well. Most gay men I know don't despise women and call them cunts among other things maybe straight men do but we know they don't post here and on OMG. other women do call other women cunts and worst and osess over them like over-heated school girls, mostly they don't like certain types of women, a lot of wowmn don't like Hillary Clinton because she is too pushy and independent, etc.

Women who hate other women is nothing new but seeing those view posted on a blog supposedly about a closeted actor is odd, even more odd is they actually think gay men post here. With the exception of the few poor stray log cabin nuts from DC forum, I would say no.

Anonymous said...

BTW, SK is straight

Probably something about how DL posters are mostly straight women. LMAO!

Anonymous said...

Straight, gay, bi - doesn't matter :)

Anonymous said...

DL started out as a gay gossip site but longtime posters complain that it's been invaded by haus fraus and batshit crazy from both sides of the fence: straight fangirls screeching that their fav actor is straight and straight fangirls screeching that their fav actor is gay. Both annoying and nuts and should keep their fan girl battles on their blogs as they have been told time and time again.

I was looking at some other comments made by the same fellow [Jim Sterling] about POP from his own website and found this one. "After watching this new footage for the Prince of Persia movie, I am convinced that Jerry Bruckheimer is in love with Jake Gyllenhaal. Am I the only one that noticed that Jerry's face was glowing when the host asked about Jake? Broke Back Mountain: More Broke Backs starring those two is in the works for sure."

Again, why do straight women stsrt blogs about closeted gay actors and not closeted gay women???

Tuesday, April 04, 2006 - Waiting for Toothy came about as a venting of sorts. I wanted a "safe" place to discuss the possibility that Jake Gyllenhaal may not be completely straight and may be or- at one point- was dating actor Austin Nichols. The idea came to me after a fellow IMDb poster created a Jake blog. In the beginning, I didn't actually want a Jake blog per se but more of a collective blog of Toothy Tile referrences and ambiguos quotes by Jake. However, such is life, the blog evolved into an all out Jake Gyllenhaal (and Austin Nichols) blog. Which turned out to not be a bad thing.

Anonymous said...

Danyelle Dillon=Straight woman. All the other gay actor LJ's for Elijah, Dom, Orlando, Viggio, the guys from SN: All straight women. Why can't a gay man create a "safe" place to discuss such things since there seems to be little or no interest in JIG on actual gay sites and no i'm not talking abbout the DL which has been over run with fangirls.

BTW, the other IMDB poster that started the Jake blog was Britpop=JW, LOL!!!

6:16: That is not an explanation and why since it's woman that start these blogs why not closeted HW actresses? Is the hatred towards other women extended to lesbians as well???

Anonymous said...

Trolly,

why don't you ask gey men about blogs and not being interested in boring and not hot bearding Jake?

Anonymous said...

^^^ gay men

Anonymous said...

Straight women don't want to talk about other women, they are not turned on by women - they want to talk about and admire appealling men - gay straight or bi. Doesn't mean they hate other women and lesbians, it means they are attracted to men. Also, some straight women, believe it or not, are concerned about equality and civil and human rights, so that is a big part of the discussions as well.

Anonymous said...

6:16: That is not an explanation

Yes, that is an explanation. Dany was Jake fan and she wanted a place where she could discuss Jake and Austin without trolls like you.

Anonymous said...

So what you are saying is that closeted gay actors turn you on and not closeted gay women because you are straight? I thought so,it took long enough for someone to come up with an explanation.

If straight women are concerned aoout eqality for all that should include lesbians, it shouldn't matter if they have vaginas.

And what is there to admire about a closet case that is bearding? How the hell is that appealing?

Bottomline: Two guys fucking turns straight women on just like two women fucking turns straight guys on. Difference is that straight men like pics and porn, women like to read and write about it.

Has nothing to do with equal rights, just somethung to get your rocks off on.

Anonymous said...

7:00: How come gay men want to create a place to talk w/ trolls?
Answer that.

Anonymous said...

Wrong, the equality discussions do include lesbians, and are very much concerned with equal rights. But yeah, some straight women, not all, find the image and thought of two men having sex extremely hot.

Blind Items Revealed

June 16, 2009

This Academy Award nominated/winner A+ list actor doesn't get much publicity for all of the good he does, and so I thought I would share one of the things about him which he did for no reason other than being a great guy. While shooting a film our actor was introduced to a young girl. The girl had wanted to meet our actor for a very long time. Because she was dying of leukemia, her parents had asked Make-A-Wish to make it happen. For whatever reason they had not. Well, someone on the set heard about this little girl and asked our actor if it would be ok for her to meet him. He said sure, and the girl came. At the time she visited him she had a few weeks to live. When he asked about her medical treatment he was told there really wasn't any money. Our actor paid for all her medical bills and three years later she is still alive and still in touch with our actor.

Dear Ted:
Good morning, sunshine! While my better half is still asleep, I've taken the opportunity to slip away and ask you a question that's had us rankled for a few weeks now, regarding "good guys" in the Biz. My boyfriend is convinced that über-stars, like Will Smith in particular, are just normal dudes who schlep it out at work and then come home to a nice, normal family afterward. No drama, so sexual deviation. When I, being a natural skeptic, professed my doubts, tensions heightened. So what's your say on this, oh sagacious voice of Hollywood wisdom?
—Kira

Dear Nosy:
There is nothing "normal" about the Pinkett-Smiths' personal lives. Nada. But that doesn't mean there's something wrong about their living sitch. What you might call "sexually deviant," they might consider totally cool, right? Weirdness is in the eye of the beholder, is it not?

Ted said that Jake got the role in PoP via the casting couch.

No he didn't and the part of his BV you quoted proves the point, you just failed to notice it

October 19, 2006

In other words, for T.T.'s next 40-foot-wide job,
Tooth-doll not only seduced the man who would decide the whole-deal shebang (it's sort of a studly adventure story, in so many ways), he now shares cocaine, hotel suites and party favors with the bigwig.

Ted wrote that on October 19 2006. Jake's next film was Rendition. At the time it was argued that playing a CIA man was vey studly, but now people like to gloss over the "next" part of Ted's statement and like to pretend he was talking about PoP.

Anonymous said...

Rendition is not adventure story, Ted was talking about PoP.

Rendition is not adventure story, Ted was talking about PoP.

As I said, people like to ignore the "next" part in T.T.'s next 40-foot-wide job but that is what Ted wrote, and Jake's next 40-foot-wide job was Rendition.

Anonymous said...

In October 2006 PoP was Jake's next project too.

No one would describe Rendition as "sort of a studly adventure story, in so many ways".

LincOsiris said...

Yeah, he's pretty wonderful.

I rarely read anything negative about Johnny, if ever.

Also, I hardly ever see him in the tabloids or on these internet gossip sites, which is just further proof that most celebs are there b/c they want to be. Johnny Depp is certainly popular enough to be featured, but he doesn't need to pimp himself or his private life out like that.

Though I still follow Jake's career and the toothy saga, JD has my respect and is probably my fave HW actor at the moment.

Anonymous said...

Jake in Rendition was announced in September 2006, so October 2006 was months after decisions were made.

September or October 2006 was just the right time for PoP "lobbying" - first PoP script is from June 2006.

Anonymous said...

8:00, refusal? If you would take the time to do proper research instead of blather, and scroll through the many posts devoted to gay and lesbian issues here and on OMG at least, you'd see that OMG and WFT2 most certainly do include discussions about equal rights for all, and equal time for lesbian women. What is it, really, that has your knickers in a twist?

As I recall, WFT the original had a good many gay men who posted, and lesbian women, and percentage-wise, it won't be the same anyway. On WFT2, there's no way to know who is posting, because 99.9999 and ad infinitum are anonymous posters. I don't recall a Tom86 either, JerseyTom.

I must admit, I hadn't seen anything of Johnny's lately until Public Enemies, and I am now a believer again. He was asolutely wonderful in it, as was Christian Bale. I had wanted to see Sweeney Todd and for some reason wasn't able to. I won't make that mistake again. :)

Anonymous said...

In October 2006 PoP was Jake's next project too.

I don't think the English language works in the way you want it to. "Next project" is singular, the same as "next 40-foot-wide job".

Jake in Rendition was announced in September 2006, so October 2006 was months after decisions were made.

Err, yeah, obviously Ted was describing something that had already happened; I don't think he has some kind of Minority Report power here. So Jake had already slept with the producer (in the past) to get the role in the next film of his (Rendition).

Anonymous said...

Timing is right for PoP, not Rendition.

"Sort of a studly adventure story, in so many ways" is obviously PoP, that description has nothing to do with Rendition.

Anonymous said...

One more important detail about Ted's movie description: in October 2006 everyone knew what was Rendition about, but public had no idea about PoP script.

Anonymous said...

8:39: Pop script was kicking around for a few years with Orlando Bloom attached to it, this was early 2006. In the summer of 2006 Jake and several other names were attached to iincluding James McElroy believe it or not and I heard Ben Barnes but he was already attached to Disneys Narnia, I remember reading all about it on IMDB, Bloom's board in 2006 and jake was mentioned. The "Public" may have not known but others that know how to gleam info knew that Jake and his people were lobbying for Pop. They pretty much offered it to Jake according to the sources on IMDB after Bloom dropped out. No need to sleep with icky Jerry who is BTW straight, besides Disney wouldn't be pushing the bearding if they knew abour Jake and Jerry or anty other Disney honcho.

Methinks not Ted but one of his interns were lurking on IMDB and embelished. As I said i'm positive that the posters on Bloom IMDB page said that they pretty much offered it to Jake. It wasn't "officially" announced until April '08 but insiders knew since the summer of 2006 he was going to do Pop, that's why he did Brothers and Nailed back to back.

PS: At one time Ted's interns had LJ's and used to post on ONTD, Caroline and Christina until late 2006 when they were busted.

Bloom would have been in Pop but he was asking for too much $$$. James had no interest.

Anonymous said...

The "Public" may have not known but others that know how to gleam info knew that Jake and his people were lobbying for Pop.

Others were lobbying too - there are a lot of young actors in Hollywood looking for a high profile movie.

Jake had a lot of reasons to use the bigwig to get PoP role.

Anonymous said...

So where was Austin when Jake was fucking, and hanging out with, this producer?

In Texas.

Anonymous said...

Jake wanted to be a super hero so bad that I can see him doing what's necessary to get PoP.

Anonymous said...

If any of this is true, then maybe Jake and Austin really are just friends because I just can't imagine Austin putting up with this.

Anonymous said...

It's HW, and lots of gay men have open relationships. Doesn't mean they are not in a loving, committed relationship because they play around on the side.

Anonymous said...

Look how fast PR and trolls jump into the fray to defend Bruckheimer. To borrow a troll phrase, how do you know he is straight. Because he is married? Give me a break. No one would call Rendition a studly adventure story. In the last interview Jerry gave re POP the first thing he mentioned was how hot Jake's body looked.

Anonymous said...

"I just can't imagine Austin putting up with this."

I would imagine that Austin would find the thought of Jake and Jerry B as repulsive and vomit inducing as the rest of us.

You really have to hope that PoP is a success, sleeping with Jerry B, endless tedious bearding coffee dates with the Chin, roiding up,... poor Jakey's really given his all for this film hasn't he. Let's just hope its all worth it.

"I just can't imagine Austin putting up with this."

According to the users here and on OMG Austin obviously is putting up with EVERYTHING.

They do not even realize that this makes him look desperate and stupid.

BTW - so now it is given fact here that Jake slept with Bruckheimer to get POP?? *Lol*......

Anonymous said...

So he slept with a HW bigwig for Pop, Jerry who is connected with Disney, so if true Disney knows about it. So then Disney makes Jake beard via a contract to straighten out his image because not only is he gay but he slept with Jerry to get the job.

Do you realize that makes no sense? First of all by all reports Jerry is straight, no rumors something you seem to leave out in your fanfic, and if it was another HW bigwig he would have to be assosciated with Disney because Disney is producing it. They would know and no way Jake wold have gotten the part.

The time frame someone described above about Bloom/IMDB/Pop in 2006 makes sense. Jake's name was attached to the movie in 2006 but it wasn't widely known because they thought Bloom would except.

Summer of 2006 POP as a film was discussed and a script was floating around on IMDB and elsewhere. Orlando,Jake and Ben Barnes names were thrown around.

Most likely one of Ted's sock puppet picked up on it and he spun it into a BI a few months later after it was announced he signed for rendition. Unfortunately for Ted Jake's next film after rendition was Brothers and then Nailed, if the sock puppets weren't so sloppy, he would have said TT's "upcoming 40 ft job" not next.

Did Orlando sleep with Jerry for POTC? Is that why Jerry and Disney originally want Orlando?

Wonder if Maggie had to fuck HW bigwigs as well like her brother?

Anonymous said...

so now it is given fact here that Jake slept with Bruckheimer to get POP??

Yes, because Ted "the truth-teller" said so.

Anonymous said...

Do you realize that makes no sense?

It makes perfect sense.

Maybe it was Jerry Bruckheimer, maybe not - we can't be sure but it doesn't matter.

The point is that producers and everyone else is OK with gay Jake as long as he's in the closet - Jake is hardly the only gay actor in Hollywood.

Anonymous said...

Yes, because Ted "the truth-teller" said so.

Ted said that Jake had sex with the bigwig for PoP - Jake was very keen to get such role, Jake got the part and timing is right so Ted's gossip is very likely true.

Going back to Cantara's essay, I was creeped out about the part about Stephen caressing Maggie's bare back, sort of like the creepy scene in Sherrybaby with Maggie if you saw the movie.

If Jake did the casting couch route then so did Maggie IMO, apparently having parents in the biz wasn't a help and she sure didn't get those roles on her lokks nor talent. True she is a better actor than Jake and seems more interesting but I can see her offering blow jobs for movie roles.

What Maggie has to do with Jake's gay casting couch? She was desperate to get a role in TDK?

WHICH troubled starlet got her first big break on TV by sending the producer a tape of herself having sex with another girl? The producer thought the ploy was so original, he cast her instead of dozens of other ingénues . .

A Casting couch is a casting couch. Jake got into acting supposedly because he was jealous of the attention Maggie was getting.Monkey see, monkey do. If you are so willing to believe Jake used the casting couch, why would you find it hard to believe Maggie did, it's more common with actresses.

And not only with TDK I suspect. Her replacing Katie was a head scratcher.

I think something creepy happened with Maggie and Papa, she said that she was in therapy during Sherry baby....

Anonymous said...

Maggie can act circles around Jake, has done mostly indies, and does not exactly have the look of a starlet. I would be really surprised is she has done much, if any, couch casting.

Anonymous said...

Surely a prerequisite of couch casting is being attractive and desirable. Doesn't that rule Maggie out anyway.

Maybe Jakey also took one for the team for Maggie as well.

Because after Batman and Superman I can see Jake determined to get leading super hero role in an expensive movie with a franchise potential. Maggie? I don't think so.

AGREED! I get that same feeling. I remember some interview where she said that while playing that part, she went to some dark places personally that she didn't quite want to revisit and she had to pull back. I don't remember the exact quote. I'll try and hunt around for it.

Come on guys, what you're suggesting is ridiculous. Wait a minute, what ARE you suggesting?

Anonymous said...

I remember that quote, I didn't take it as bringing up things from her own past, but rather getting too much into the mindset of her character. ANd even so, why would you assume it had anything to do with Poppa G. Maggie doesn't strike me as someone who would keep a person like that in her life.

From One Outfest Movie Director to Another: Shut Up About Actors Coming Out said...

When gay director Todd Holland told an Outfest panel the best way for young gay male actors to make in the biz is to stay in the closet, he started a (mostly civilized) back-and-forth debate among different players about 1) whether his advice is true; and 2) even if it's true, whether gay Hollywood should be encouraging anyone to stay closeted. Holland ended up apologizing-ish, but the issue didn't die there. When fellow gay director Jason Bushman introduced his film Hollywood, je t'aime at Outfest on Friday night, he went after Holland directly.

Bushman's film was a perfect meta scenario for this whole debate: Hollywood, je t'aime is about a gay Parisian man who heads to Hollywood to make it big as an actor, where his sexuality, among other things, plays a part in his journey. But before the opening credits rolled, Bushman (pictured, right) addressed Holland's statements: "This is something I've given a lot of thought to," he said. "From the get go on this movie, my wonderful casting director Jeremy Gordon … he discussed discussed how important it was to cast openly gay actors in openly gay roles."

Indeed, from big names like Chad Allen to first-timers like Eric Debets, Hollywood, je t'aime (pictured, below) is filled with openly gay actors. And it represents a wholly different approach to casting than Holland's theory: Let the openly gay not only star in a film, but star in a film with gay characters.

Of course, Hollywood, je t'aime probably isn't going to see a wide release anytime soon; expect it to play the art houses and maybe HereTV. Unless you've got some serious star power attached (of the straight variety), films about gay male love stories do not get much attention from mainstream distributors.

And perhaps that should be a footnote to Holland's larger argument about gay actors not getting far: Gay movies don't get very far either. Should we then be telling gay directors and producers not to make movies about what they know?

Folks like Bryan Singer and Roland Emmerich already took that advice; these two gay powerhouses eschew that genre for blockbusters. And yet somehow big gays like John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig), Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry), and Pedro Almodóvar (Law of Desire) don't have a problem cashing cheques in queer cinema.

If Maggie has a problem with Stephen why would she ask him to attend her wedding? Stephen couldn't invite himself if the family didn't want him there.

I have a feeling that both Jake and Maggie are not too pleased with Papa and maybe words were exchanged. In the end he is her father and he should have been there but I have a feeling that he doesn't see much of them right now.

I don't think either are Meryl. Maggie can be good but she can be terrible. Her voice is cringe worthy. Jake has had his moments too, it's been awhile.

When I read Cantara I first thought as you did, but then I thought about the source. She wants readers. I doubt she was wearing a backless number while preggo. It was probably a sundress and he was rubbing away tension between her shoulders. They were in public.

This married B list movie actress has seen her career slowly slide to the point where she is more likely a C. It is only her looks and her name recognition that keeps her hovering at that B line. Anyway, she has been in this space before and one of the times she was in this space was to discuss her foreign companion who has always helped support her before and during her marriage. Anyway, now she is taking those same skills and has put them to securing herself a role in this A list director's next movie. She thinks his movies will put her on her way to the A list. The fact that the director is married doesn't bother her in the least. She wants to be in that movie and will do anything to succeed.

Gay director Don Roos says gay actors shouldn't come out publically said...

Openly gay film writer/director Don Roos does not believe gay actors should not come out of the closet publically. “I don’t think actors should be out at the level of press, radio, TV and film,” he said on Sunday, July 19.

Roos made that comment during a special “Conversation with Don Roos” program honoring his work on the final day of Outfest, the 10-day LGBT film festival held every July in Los Angels. His comment echoes a similar controversial comment made a week earlier at another Outfest panel by openly gay TV director Todd Holland, who has since issued an apology saying he chose his words poorly.

Roos, who wrote and directed the films Bounce, The Opposite of Sex and Happy Endings, elaborated by saying that when casting a movie, he has to consider things which will distract the audience from the story he is trying to tell. “I can’t cast Mel Gibson in a movie," he said. "Who could put Tom Cruise in a movie right now? When I see Tom Cruise, I think of Scientology, jumping on a sofa and getting into a fight with Brooke Shields.”

He added that he believes everyone else should come out publically. But the actor’s job is to perform a character and his/her real life shouldn’t enter a viewer’s mind while watching a movie. “I prefer more mystery," he said. "I don’t want to know about [the actor’s] political views, whether they’re gay or straight.”

Audience members immediately challenged his comments. However, Roos, who was honored 10 days earlier during the opening ceremonies of Outfest with the 2009 Outfest Achievement Award, stood his ground by saying that he feels the fear of homosexuality that exists in American society is firmly ingrained. “I have a deep respect for homophobia [in American society] and I don’t think it will ever go away. I don’t think actors coming out is going to help end homophobia. I think doctors, teachers and lawyers coming out will end homophobia.”

He added that he also feels racism is still deeply ingrained in the fabric of America, “We’re a country of bigots.” Then he quipped, “ I don’t want that to go away entirely. We wouldn’t be interesting anymore.” Program moderator Paris Barclay, an openly gay TV director, joked, “Then we’d be like Canada.”

While the coming out comments created the most controversy, the discussion was not limited to that. Roos said he does not watch his own films once they are completed. His favorite of his movies is 2005’s Happy Endings.

Roos, who wrote the films Boys on the Side, Love Field, Diabolique and Single White Female, says he enjoys writing female characters the most, finding them the more interesting, “I like irritable women. They’re scary.” He likens that back to the fact that mothers have all the power over the children when growing up. “Mom has the power to take things away or give them. You fear that ‘NO’ And it’s a female voice.”

Gay director Don Roos says gay actors shouldn't come out publically said...

The 54-year-old Roos started directing because directors get to talk to the actors. He found himself frustrated as a writer by not having any input once a script is purchased.

These days, Roos is often called in as a script doctor to add emotional depth and create more realistic dialogue for screenplays. “One of the requirements of being a script doctor is carrying the audience inside you.”

His advice to writers, in addition to being true to characters in the story, is to always remember your audience, to the keep the audience’s emotional journey in mind. “What does the audience need to see next on this journey?”

He also encouraged writers, “Make sure you have a life and your life wins out over your career.” He said that being married and raising kids has made him less interested in his work/career. Roos married his longtime partner, actor/writer Dan Bucatinsky, in September 2008 during the 5-month period when same-sex marriages were legal in California. The pair have two children, 4-year old Eliza and 1-year-old Jonah.

Roos’ most recent project is writing and directing the internet comedy series Web Therapy starring Lisa Kudrow as an impatient therapist who gives bad advice over the internet.

Notes From Hollywood

Anonymous said...

This is just idiotic. Under Roos reasoning Jolie should never be cast in another movie because all we'd think about is all her kids, Jake and Reese because of their 24/7 reeking, RDJ and all of his drug problems and the fact he has been in jail, Crowe and Bale because of their tantrums, Grant's prostitute, etc. His examples of Cruise and Gibson are just red herrings.

Anonymous said...

Forgot to add, that of course nobody does that with heterosexuals, so it is just a cop-out to use that excuse.

It never ceases to amaze me how many gay men in power want to keep their own down.

Homophobia will never go away if it is just "teachers, lawyers, etc," because those people, unfortunately, are not generally role models. Nobody on the playground is going to say, gee, our family attorney is gay, so that means being gay is cool.

Maybe not, but his community, town, state or city and neighbors will - and that's a hell of a lot more important and reaches a hell of a lot more people, across the age and social boards.

Anonymous said...

You overestimate the importance of actors, and underestimate the importance, and influence, of lawyers an teachers, and everyday people who are gay. Maybe noone on the playground would think its cool, but where it counts, people will.

The HW gay mafia is circling the wagons and trying to keep all those stars in the closet, they're afraid if one does it, they'll all follow, and heaven forbid, they might make a few million dollars less on a $200 million+ blockbuster. I also think the real people being protected are the HW gay mafia itself, and maybe the stars who've invested decades in lying and bearding. Nobody wants to think what they've done (or the advice they've given) will be shown to be wrong.

Anonymous said...

No one is underestimating the importance of other people being out, every single one of them matters. But to say actors and other public figures that are widely seen by everyone don't really matter is either playing dumb, or seriously has no understanding of the role culture plays in changing things. Movies, television and music matters. If it didn't then nobody would have to be in the closet in HW in the first place.

Anonymous said...

I doesn't matter to everyone - it matters more on the ground level where people are actually living their lives, and changing laws, and teaching right from wrong. Noone underestimates the value of culture to change things, but it doesn't happen there, or HW would already have an out actor. It happens on the ground level.

Anonymous said...

By your own reasoning, you say that TBTB in HW won't have an out actor because the majority of people won't accept it, then logically change has to start with real people, not actors, right?

Prince of Persia UK Posters: Ads or Art?

Empire has the exclusive debut of two new UK posters for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced adaptation of the Prince of Persia videogame series. And, oooh, they’re arty! At first glance, I thought Gemma Arterton’s was a magazine cover, and Jake Gyllenhaal’s image looks a bit like a prototype Criterion Collection cover from a couple years back. Don’t get me wrong; I like these images and am interested to see that Disney is promoting the film by taking a less obvious angle than “hey, big action movie!” Does the ad campaign mean that we’re actually in for something a little less standard than a version of Pirates of the Caribbean starring a muscly Jake? I hope so!

I should say, noone underestimates the value of culture to change things, but it doesn't start there. It starts at the ground level, and then there's a cultural shift. A lot of people don't know and couldn't give a sh*t less who some actors and musicians are, other than entertainment at the cinema once in awhile, if that, especially not in this economy. If Daddy is still paying your bills, maybe that's all you look to for role models. Maybe to a certain demographic more on a cultural cutting edge, actors and musicians are more influential, but then these people are already the more open-minded among us. The vast majority of people don't fall into this category.

Just because an actor comes out, while it may benefit a young person's sense of self and esteem, is no guarantee of their safety and protection, or that it will change the mindset of others. That only comes from a safe, educated communities where people know real people who are gay, not entertainers. Entertainers are give much more leeway than real people, a lot of people do not identify with them.

Then explain to me why, if that is the case, actors can't be out. People keep arguing that actors don't matter, but then turn around and say they can't be out. That makes no sense.

Of course it matters, and I've read numerous interviews with out gay artists who've talked about this very issue, and how growing up it would have made such a big difference if they'd had someone in HW who was out to look to. I thnk Lance Duncan Black was one such person.

I've also heard it from ordinary gay people too, who growing up felt like they didn't have anyone like that to identify with, or joked that there was only one or two out celebrities when they were growing up, and how nice it would have been to have more.

It does matter, but keep telling yourself it doesn't just so you can justify Jake's bearding.

I guess the Westboro Baptist Church is planning on picketing a bunch of the concerts because of American Idol’s “fag infestation.” Well, I guess they like to put on their signs, “God Hates Fags,” but I think God hates hate more.

TC: Amen. [high fives]
AL: I kind of think there’s probably a better way of spending their energy. Probably doing some good would be better, promoting positive causes, helping the homeless…

TC: Hugging someone.
AL: Yeah. Spreading some love, I think, would probably be more beneficial than hate, you know? But I ignore it. I say everyone’s entitled to their opinion!

TC: A change is gonna come.
AL: [laughs] I agree, I agree.

TC: Pet peeves?
AL: That kind of crap. That’s a pet peeve. No, in a related thing to that, it’s been interesting—because I’m Jewish. [laughs] And clearly gay. And I get a lot fan mail and gifts that are trying to express Christian ideals and Bible scriptures. It’s awkward because that’s not my belief system. I respect people for the intention in which they’re giving these gifts, because I know it’s out love and hope, but it doesn’t match my belief system at all, so I kind of wish there’d be a little bit more respect for that.

TC: The way I see it: music and spirituality, they can be intertwined, but when they start to contradict each other or people start to lose the meaning behind the music…
AL: Yeah! I mean, my music is just for entertainment value, I’m not trying to preach to anybody, I’m not trying to spread any agenda, I’m just trying to get people up and dancing and feeling good. There’s nothing controversial about that.

TC: It’s just fun.
AL: Yeah, it’s fun. It’s fun and it’s sexy. And if sexy scares you, don’t listen to my music.

How many people had an inkling about Luther Vandross when he was around? How many people heard the rumor about who Teddy Pendergrass was really with the night of the accident? The Eddie Murphy rumors? And yet, how many fans did these guys have, and still have?

Shit, Tom Cruise has had gay rumors throughout his career. The only thing that has slowed him down was his scientology outbursts. Travolta was seen kissing a man, it hasn't stopped his career.

I just feel that some people have no problem with homosexuality as long as it is just suspicion or rumored about. But once it's actually confirmed, or the person actually says the words "Yes, I am gay", then they want nothing to do with them. It's really weird.

...a friend took me to see Basil Dearden's 1961 film Victim (banned in South Africa), and explained how it had led to a change in the law. Its grim exposure of the blackmailing network actively helped to decriminalise homosexuality - even if this took another six years to achieve, with the Wolfenden Report in 1967. So my gayness was legal now, here in my new land, if not yet embraced, by either my fellow citizens or indeed myself. Oddly enough, Victim's star, Dirk Bogarde, seemed to be engaged in a similar personal struggle. It was remarkably brave of him, as a Rank Film matinee idol, to make Victim - and he would go on to make another gay film that had a powerful impact on me, Death in Venice (1971) - yet he was forever dodging the question of his own sexuality in interviews, and radiating a curious self-hatred.
Does coming out matter? Yes it does. McKellen puts it well: "We can't expect the world to like us if we don't tell them we're here." Coming out is a different issue from the sexual orientation of the stars of Brokeback Mountain and Capote. The coming out of prominent actors is vital - for the individual's own dignity and to provide a role model for others - but that actor's sexuality should not then affect his or her casting. McKellen is scathing about contemporary Hollywood: "They'll let me play a grey-bearded wizard, but they still wouldn't cast a young gay actor - who was out - in a straight romantic lead."

"A personal view of gay movies", by actor Antony Sher, The Guardian, Thursday 23 March 2006

Ebert:

Synopsis: With its location shooting, noir lighting and doomed, trapped characters, the film was instrumental in paving the way for the legalisation of homosexuality in Britain. Dirk Bogarde, Britain’s revered matinee idol, risked his career to portray Melville Farr, a closeted gay lawyer at a time when homosexual acts were a crime. When his former lover Jack (Peter McEnery) is blackmailed, Farr — who is married — agrees to investigate. The case is complicated by his fear of exposure and a sudden mysterious death.

For Dirk Bogarde (1921-1999), the role in "Victim" provided a decisive break in his career. He'd been a popular leading man in the 1950s, playing conventional action and romantic roles and even making those "Doctor" comedies ("Doctor in the House," "Doctor at Sea," and "Doctor at Large"). To play a homosexual in 1961 would bring an end, his agent warned him, to those kinds of mainstream roles, and make him unemployable in Hollywood just at the moment when American directors were interested in him.

But he went ahead anyway, just as Melville Farr did, and indeed never again appeared as a conventional male lead. That turned out, oddly, to be the key to his greatest success; at a time when his stock as a conventional leading man would probably have been falling, he was able, having broken free, to work in one challenging film after another: "The Servant" (1963), "King & Country" (1964), "Darling" (1965), "Accident" (1967), "The Fixer" (1968) Visconti's "The Damned" (1969) and "Death in Venice" (1971), Resnais' "Providence" (1977) and Fassbinder's "Despair" (1979).

Bogarde himself was homosexual, but never made that public; even in his touching memoirs about the life and death of his partner Tony Forwood, he cast their relationship as actor and manager, not lovers. For that he has been criticized by some gay writers and activists, but consider: By accepting what looked like career suicide to star in "Victim," wasn't he making much the same decision as his character Melville Farr -- to do the right thing, and accept the consequences? Didn't he, in effect, come out as an actor in that and many other roles (notably as the aging homosexual in "Death in Venice")? Was it anybody's business what he was, or did, in his private life? It is the argument of "Victim" that it was not.

I met him once, on a summer afternoon in Venice when he was making the Visconti picture. (...) He was quiet, crisp, introverted. Not the sort of man who you could imaging making personal revelations for the delight of the press.

Today, yes, things are different, but Bogarde was born in 1921, and homosexuality was only finally legalized in Britain in 1967. As an actor, he risked a great deal to take a crucial role at a time when it made a difference. And didn't he anyway, through his work, tell us whatever it was about him we thought we had the right to know?

Prince of Persia Posters said...

I think Peter nails it: these posters look like glossy magazine covers. Quite serious and somber glossy magazine covers in fact. Which strikes me as pretty odd, considering this is an epic adventure through an enchanted land. I’m sort of getting the adventure part, but the enchanted land and the epic escape me. Lots of beefcake though.

And doesn’t the Disney logo feel out of place in this image?

A Jake Gyllenhaal staring prince of Persia always struck me as a hard sell, and I have been curious about how they would try to market it. I definitely didn’t expect to see this, a poster that emphasizes so much Jake as very brooding rendition of the prince.

Maybe the idea here is that this type of image, and this depiction of the character, will be attractive to women? And once they convinced women to go see it guys should be an easy sell with some well placed fights and effects on the trailers? That is my best bet at this point, but I wouldn’t be surprised to be wrong. Like I said, kind of an odd choice.

Why is "Bruno" tanking? Too gay, too homophobic, or just not funny? said...

Bruno, the movie that everyone has an opinion about, is tanking at the box office. It made a mere $8 million at the box office this past weekend — an almost-unheard-of 73% drop from the weekend before.

"The Friday-Saturday data show that Bruno was not even the top live-action comedy about a non-American who has sex with a man," wrote Richard Corliss in Time. "It finished behind The Proposal, which has been in theaters three weeks longer."

Ever since the movie opened on July 10th with a very healthy one-day take of $14.4 million, the film's box office news has gone from bad to worse. From Friday to Saturday that first weekend, the film's take plummeted 40%, a number that shocked Hollywood, because it seemed to be the result of the newly named "Twitter Effect" — the phenomenon of people seeing a movie on Friday night and Twittering negative reviews that affect a movie's box office take as soon as the next day.

Bruno won its opening weekend with a $30.4 million take — but that was a far cry from the $50 million that studio insiders had been predicting after its strong Friday opening. The movie has now grossed a total of almost $50 million in the U.S., and $76 million internationally. Universal Studios spent $42 million on Bruno and another $48 million or so marketing it.

By contrast, Borat, Cultural Learnings for America for Make Glorious Benefit of Kazakhstan, Sacha Baron Cohen's 2006 movie, opened at less than $27 million, earned more than that its second weekend, and went on to make more than $128 million in the U.S., and more than $260 million internationally. It had a budget of $18 million.

I thought the movie was often tasteless, but I didn't think it was particularly homophobic — although I didn't think it was particularly great either.

What's your explanation as to why the movie is bombing? Too gay for a mainstream American audiences? Too gay for the young male audience which usually buys tickets for this sort of raunchy humor? Too homophobic (or at least too retrograde) for gay-centric urban ones? Was the movie just not funny enough? Did the studio spoil it by hyping it to death, not to mention releasing all the funniest clips beforehand? Was it all of the above — or something else entirely?

$48 million for marketing?! Geez.

If a studio spent $48 million to market Bruno, how many more millions is Disney going to spend from July 2009 to May 2010 to convince people that Jake is the super tough, super heroic, super straight Prince of Persia. I'm thinking many many millions will be needed based on the first 2 posters and Jake's little "I want people to stop taking me so seriously" interview. Wonder when Jake will realize that people are not taking him seriously.

It's working!

After Elton Bruno comment:

"There was no outpouring of negative reviews - it actually got a 69% on the Tomatometer. However critical reviews have no real effect on money. Transformers was totally trashed by critics and made - so far- almost 400 million bucks."

Toothy said he doesn't want to take HIMSELF too seriously anymore. I guess he thought he might sound funny, humble and "down to earth" by saying that. Lots of actors and actresses make that kind of statement, they are just showing off...
If you are going to critize him for saying something stupid, at least check the quotes

Why would anyone want to check quotes? It's no fun that way. Besides, if a misquote is perpetuated often enough it becomes fact. First rule of internet gossip right there.

No, Jake allegedly said: "I'm tired of taking myself so seriously".

9:33 AM has a point, other people have no reason to take Jake seriously, either.

Give us an example.

Well, it looks like the elite directors don't take him very seriously either.

He's also dumbing down his own professional expectations, just like his beard was forced to do. Reese is also stuck in second-rate rom-com/Disney purgatory with no exit strategy.

Mission accomplished, Jake.

Chef Mario Batali has been cast in the film Bitter Feast. The film is about a celebrity chef who takes revenge on a food critic who gives him a bad review. Batali will play the owner of the chef's restaurant. [UPI]

CHIN goes where the money is, if you pay a little attention, you'll see she is better in drama than in comedy.
Jake is stunned by how Chin handles her career and he wants to walk the same path. But i have the feeling he is not cold enough to succed.

we'll see.....

Jake might be stunned only with chin's PR work.

he wants to walk the same path

No evidence of that.

We'll see if Jake changes his mind and starts doing dumb romcoms and silly comedies.

Seth Green: Things people say to me at Comic-Con

Walking the show floor for 14 years, I've heard it all. Here's a sampling:

Hey, are you Seth Green?
How tall are you?
Can you leave my outgoing voice message?
Say something like Chris from Family Guy.
Can you sign my boobs?
Can you call my girlfriend?
Can you sign my girlfriend's boobs?
Can I do voices for Robot Chicken?
When is Austin Powers 4 coming out?
I loved Airborne!
You're taller than I expected!
Why are you wearing a Spider-Man costume?
Can I have your phone number, move in with you, eat your food, and wear your clothes?
You were great as Bud Bundy.
I came from Antarctica just to meet you.
Will you sign my hairy nipple?
Where do you get the toys for Robot Chicken? Will you buy mine?
Were you in a Carls Jr. commercial?
I went to summer camp with you in 1981. Don't you remember me?
Can I follow you around and get into all the VIP parties with you?
Who wrote your Star Wars Emperor sketch?
Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Seth. Hi.
I loved you in Scream.

Jake has already started his slide towards rom/com world. The Drug movie he's going to film with Anne Hathaway is a rom/com. And as someone pointed out on OMG last night, going to the Coldplay concert and schmoozing with Tom Cruise could be a bid to lobby for a new part-Tom owns a movie studio.

The Drug movie doesn't sound like a romcom.

homosexuality was only finally legalized in Britain in 1967.

20th century, 1967, UK. Unfuckingbelievable.

:-( True. But it's a lot worse here in the US, where the Gay was not legalized until 2003.

Two thousand and THREE! >:-(
