Ticking Tile

October 16, 2008

Dear Ted:
Why is Toothy Tile bearding when he has a baby with his boyfriend? As much as I adore Family Tile, I think Gray Goose should take Baby Tile with him and leave Toothy. Enough is enough when manufacturing a fake image! The baby comes first and requires honesty. What do you think?
—Myla

Dear Honest Woman:
I think you know what I think. After all, your letter's first, isn't it?

Dear Ted:
I, too, am tired of the Toothy Tile game...but just out of curiosity, how many people have sent you an email correctly identifying him?
—SanFriskyBabe

Dear Ticking Tile:
A few.

That poster on Gossip Rocks went to Stanford with the bitch.

Anonymous said...

Ops, sorry, I didn't read the whole post.

Anonymous said...

I have heard many similar stories from Stanford people for years. Reese has always been a bitch and people have always talked about it.

In one early interview she said how her roommates would get irritated because the phone was always for her and they would have to take all these messages from producers and directors. She was all giggly saying how she could see how that would bother someone if the phone was never for them.

Can you imagine what she was like to live with?

Anonymous said...

Now that you mention it 9:35am, I remember reading an interview with her several years ago where she's talking about how she gets all these designer clothes and she loves to buy tons of shoes. She then goes on to say that she has to clean out her closets all the time because they're so full and she can't have the paps get pics of her in the same clothes all the time. She then says she gives all her clothes and shoes to her friends and it's really good to be her friend because they don't ever have to shop because of her. I remember thinking that if my friend ever said that, I would be annoyed that my friend has such a condescending attitude.

Anonymous said...

Her attitude shines through in interviews. How about the guy on the plane that said he didn't want his kid getting into figure skating because it was so expensive and she told him she was glad she wasn't his kid and that it was a parent's responsibility to nurture childrens dreams.

Anonymous said...

Laura Reese is a whoring psycho bitch.

Anonymous said...

^^Is that so wrong?

Anonymous said...

Yes.

I have a friend who still knows her and she says that Reese was very mean to Ryan and that she was always putting him down.

Anonymous said...

^^I meant about the nurturing children's dreams part. Money should be secondary to that; there's always a way to do it. I don't like the shoe thievery, tho, if that rumor is true. ;)

Anonymous said...

I have a friend who still knows her and she says that Reese was very mean to Ryan and that she was always putting him down.

Another masochist.

Anonymous said...

Money isn't secondary if you don't have it. Anyway true class involves keeping your opinions to yourself in certain moments. One of them is when you feel the urge to tell other people how to parent their children.
Don't do it. It's none of your business. Unless they are abusive of course but lack of figure skating lessons doesn't qualify.

Anonymous said...

^^Yes, I agree, she should have kept her opinion to herself, that part. Sometimes it's hard to do tho. I just meant that that was one of the more minor infractions. ;)

At least now we know why "Vanessa" kept such a close eye on them while they were shopping at Myla - Light Fingers Witherspoon. Just kidding. ;)

Where would you all rate Jake G. importance in your life? Do you think about him constanly? What I mean is this about entertainment or something else?

Part of my daily Internet entertainment.

I stopped belieaving Jake would come out a bout a year ago, maybe when he is wayyyyy old he'll come clean. Not until then.. It's still helerious with all the posters at Awful Truth comments section who still havent got a clue that jake is TT. That is entertainment at least.

oh, might I add, i think there is a better chance of Zac Efron coming out of the closet, he's a bit more "openly flaming" to keep it in the closet for to long. Still love him though, he's still very young so I'll give him a break for not getting out there yet.

Dear Ted:

Ready to Wed says this weeks In Touch Mag with pictures from each of the three weekend photo ops. OK has a full page picture of Jake with Deacon with a giant headline: STEPDAD.

Raise your hand if you think the picture taken with Deacon was a set up.

Janice Minn once said she did not publish pictures of celebrities with their children if they were really against it. In last weeks US mag the picture of Ryan with the kids and Abbie the kids were cropped out of the picture. Not so with Reese. Could mean nothing but it was a strange choice to crop them out of the photo when the article stated that they were there.

Anonymous said...

Raise your hand if you think the picture taken with Deacon was a set up.

Reeke needed something remotely interesting for the tabloids.

First I hated the idea of Jake and Reese be it real or fake.
Second I hated how Reeke couldn't even be low key after Jake's close, "special" friend died.
Now this. It's just so ridiculous.

Jake, it's so hard to stay your fan. :(

It´s amazing how some of you here literally spit on Reese for everything she does and then lecture others on what they should think.
There are some veritable Nazis here.
You have to believe that Reese is nothing else but a bitch, Jake is not only gay but is living with Austin, they are only in it for money reasons, Ted C knows everything.
If someone dares to have a different opinion he/she gets defamed as troll or babbler. And yet you flatter yourselves calling yourselves liberal, open minded and tolerant.

Anonymous said...

If the pictures with Deacon were really for a photo opportunity, I'd be seriously pissed that my ex uses my kids for self-promotion, if I was Ryan. I would intervene if I was him. Seriously.

Anonymous said...

Why? Reese used kids for self-promotion when she was with Ryan too.

Anonymous said...

Because Ryan and Abbie are above that? Good one.

2:10 PM, not everyone here is convinced Jake is gay and that Reese is his beard.
Some think he's bisexual and Reeke use their thing to promote everything that involves them.
I think most here agree that they are famewhores and no one here is a fan of them. That's what we all seem to have in common.

Oprah Winfrey to Party with Barack Obama on Election Night?

Does talk-show icon Oprah Winfrey have plans to be with Barack Obama on election night?

The New York Daily News reports that Oprah will indeed be partying with Obama on Nov. 4. The Democratic presidential nominee is expected to appear at a rally and party in Chicago's Grant Park on Tuesday night. "Oprah will be attending the party," a spokesperson for Oprah reportedly told the New York Daily News.

The paper says the Obama camp is keeping a tight lip about other A-list guests and performers slated to appear at the big event.

Seems everyone here hates Reese. So what does that makes Jake? No one is putting a gun to his head.

Anonymous said...

^That's true it's his choice. I think many people would do almost everything for career, fame and money. Seems Jake's one of them.

Anonymous said...

So what does that makes Jake?

Closeted actor with a famous, despicable beard.

Anonymous said...

Jake and Reese deserve one another. I'm here to watch the whole lie unravel. Any admiration I ever had for Jake is long gone.

I bet Jake packs on the pounds after he stops his training regimen. Both he and Reese have a tendency to get dumpy-looking.

Anonymous said...

Gay man can't afford to pack on the pounds, the competition is fierce.

Anonymous said...

He can't afford to pack on the pounds but he will. Once you stop that kind of training and start eating normally again you gain weight very quickly.

All that training has made Jake's head look weird on his body. I laugh everytime I see a photo of him. I don't think that's what they were going for.

Look to them as role models. I think Jake is Bi, but maybe gay, and he's not the only one in HW doing this. Your attention is just on him. And as long as mainstream America or the movie going Public don't read these blogs, he and every other in the closet celeb. can hide or not talk about their sexuality. How can you tell who's posting on WFT2?

Anonymous said...

If it wasn't for Reese, Jake would be long forgotten by the general public. He no longer gets any press if she's not at his side. Rendition and Zodiac barely made a blip on the Radar and Nailed and Brothers don't look as though they'll fare much better. PoP will bring him a lot of attention because it's a big summer blockbuster type of movie. If PoP doesn't bring in mucho bucks, Jake's career may ultimately be summed up as Reese Witherspoon's bf who also starred in the gay cowboy movie BBM.

Anonymous said...

Jake doesn't get any press because Jake doesn't exist outside Reeke.

On top of all the other problems with this whole Reeke nonsense is the fact that it is so D-list. Reese's career is on the way down, despite the Oscar: most of her movies in recent years have not made money, she's over 30, and she's not much of an actress. So what's a girl to do in that position--turn to the tabloids, Avon, etc. to keep her name out there.

Then you have Jake, who is in theory on his way up. What he should be doing is building a respectable film portfolio, giving the fans some hot and sexy photos, keeping his name out of the tabloids to build some mystery and appeal.

Unfortunately for Jake, he shares a manager with Reese, and what we've gotten is a pr campaign that seems to be designed more for Reese's needs than Jake's. So now Jake looks like something the cat dragged in and is better known as Mr. Witherspoon.

Anonymous said...

5:16, you are so right - it's horrible to see this happening. From BBM forward, he's at his most phyisically beautiful now, and should capitalize on it while he can, and careerwise, he builds the foundation now, especially being one of the rare actors who was involved in the masterpiece that is BBM. Not many actors have that. Instead, we get househusband wannabe. :(

Anonymous said...

Jake is a solid enough actor. I think he would have a good career, if he chose interesting, challenging roles.
He should have avoided dating high profile actresses like RW (or maybe it was a kick to date an Oscar winner who he maybe liked from previous films (fanboy)?). If he's gay and bearding, they should have chosen a better beard. One that doesn't make him look like a wimp. A wannabe model/actress maybe? Someone like DiCaprio's gf (not saying he's bearding, but if he is, it's a good choice).

Anonymous said...

Please, no need to insult Jake.

Go to IHJ gallery, he attended the premiere of this movie with her, her ex and SMG. Cruel Intentions (?).

Anonymous said...

Well, maybe he's the settling down type, I don't know. I just wonder why he is never, ever seen with anyone but Reese and her brood, not his relatives, and nothing public for Heath, even as a colleague. In fact, more Reese about that time. That's what bothers me, and turned me off to her. You rarely see Reese with anyone else either. It's like propaganda - you will believe Jake is straight. ;)

Anonymous said...

So what? Jake knows Ryan at least since 1997 and "Homegrown" filming.

Anonymous said...

I never will get over his snubbing, Heath, never.

And I don't wanna hear about how he's so private, the whole Reeke-o-Rama is a public spectacle if there ever was one.

Anonymous said...

IDK. Maybe since his parents seperated (early January?) his mom relocated to N.Y. where his sis. lives? I've no idea if his dad is still in L.A. And isn't his friend Chirs still in Europe? Maybe on top of all that Reese wants to spend every free minute with him and he agrees?
Or maybe he's "just" bearding.

Anonymous said...

So what? Jake knows Ryan at least since 1997 and "Homegrown" filming.

Who knows, maybe he watched it because Ryan was in it, or because of Reese or because of both of them. Or he simply likes this kind of crappy films? Only Jake knows.

Anonymous said...

She should know when to step back. Heath is gone forever, she and her brood are still here. Surely she could have taken a back seat for a short amount of time. Or maybe it's not her fault, it was his choice. At any rate, it's unforgettable. To me, Ennis and Jack are the same film icons as Butch and Sundance, and he should have said at least a couple of words for Heath publicly, to honor him, to hell with everything else. :(

Palin Prank Call: Masked Avengers, Canadian Comedy Duo, Convince Palin She's Talking To French President Sarkozy (AUDIO)

The AP reports that a Quebec comedy duo, posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, have successfully prank called Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin has unwittingly taken a prank call from a Canadian comedian posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and told him she may make a good president in eight years. The Republican vice presidential nominee discussed politics, the perils of hunting with Vice President Dick Cheney, and Sarkozy's "beautiful wife," in the telephone call released Saturday.

When the caller told Palin she would make a good president, she laughed and replied: "Maybe in eight years."

^^ totally agree.

(Why? Do you have a problem with the Gays?)

^^ NO. I'm gay. But it seems that most here are mad at him because they (think / feel) Jake is gay and bearding and this has really got some people upset to no end. Hey, it's his life, and if he (is) gay and bearding, it will come out evetually one way or another. Maybe sooner than we think, or maybe 10, 20 years from now. (that's how it usually happens) I like him also and became a (big) fan after BBM. It would be nice if he would come out and be a proud (masculine) GAY or BISEXUAL Man. Even a HW celebrity. But Jake has to choose his own path and deal with his issues. So, I'm not mad at him or the gays. LOL

Anonymous said...

^^ forgot to say, I think the guy is BISEXUAL who's not open about it.^^^ Nothing wrong with being bisexual either!

Anonymous said...

Reese is going to present at the CMA awards. Why? She must be desperate for some attention. She's an actress and doesn't sing-just because she played a country singer doesn't mean she is one.

Anonymous said...

Why?

Her new movie is coming up, so she's doing a little self-promo. That's what she and Jake do best, remember?

Anonymous said...

Saw a commercial on TV today for Reese's latest - Four Christmases. It doesn't look to good. I guess if it tanks at the box office we'll get another blitz of Reeke coffee/breakfast/kids/jogging pics the following weekend. I agree with the posts earlier-Jake has become a tabloid star, not movie star. He's known as Reese Witherspoon's boyfriend, the guy that was in Brokeback Mountain.

Anonymous said...

Nothing wrong with being a bi-sexual? Ask a woman who's on the downlow. Ask the gay community who can't count on this person when the chips are down.

Reese was a presenter at the CMT awards in 2005 J. Phoenix when WTL came out, so this the 2nd time for her and as you pointed out it's PR for her movie.
4 Christmases ma look like crap but I bet it makes $$$, it's opening the day after Thanksgiving with very little competition.
She and Vaughn are producers so they will get plenty of $$$.

I can understand why he's doing it, but it's very tacky and nothing to be proud of.

Anonymous said...

It's not my fault. I'm a star, I'm simply irresistible and tabloids just can't get enough of me!

Anonymous said...

7:27: I agree with everything you've written. It will "come out in the wash" so to speak. It's his life he can make stupid movies and "date" who ever. None of us know the pressures that he's dealing with.

Anonymous said...

There's no excuse for the bearding. It's one thing to not come out and live your life with some dignity, another to lie and in effect tell everyone that you agree heterosexuality is the only acceptable lifestyle.
And for someone who wouldn't be where he is today with BBM it is despicable and unforgivable.

Since Jake seems to think he doesn't need his gay fans anymore I'll be happy to oblige him, and will not be plucking down my money to see any of his movies.

However I will still be following him, because it's like that car wreck you see on the side of the highway. You know you shouldn't slow down to look at it, but you do anyway.

But to beard & pretend to be a step dad when you are not even close to the beard's kids?!! I used to think J& R were friends. Now, I don't think that's true either. Now, Now, Now this is MEAN SPIRITED and solves nothing. As I have said before, I believe he is gay / bi, and since I believe he could be gay or bi, he and Reese could be in a relationship. I do believe he and Kirsten were. And, If none of us are insiders, we are all still SPECULATING!! Why get so uptight about it. Before you heard or read about the rumors of him being gay you were a fan. There are rumors about Travolta, Cruise, Smith, Spacey, etc... What's the difference! And yes, I believe all mentioned are into men also. I happen to believe that they are sexual with women also. Watching train wrecks are not good, somebody on the train gets hurt!!

Anonymous said...

^^ All except Spacey^^ I needed to correct that. But, I'm not and won't be mad at him.

Anonymous said...

Hey, 1.57, that may be mean spirited as per your view but that's the way I feel as a consequence of what has happened. And I'm certainly not here to solve anything. I'm a viewer only.
I don't believe he is bi or in a relationship with Reese. Kirsten IMO was his first beard.
Am I uptight? I don't know. but I really dislike celebrities who fake their image. To just be mum on things is one thing but to out of your way to pay paps and then pretend they are chasing and annoying you and to create an entirely fake image is something else entirely. That is why I'm not a fan now. Sure this is all speculation but after you read about Jake for almost 3 years you get a pretty good idea as to what's going on.

Anonymous said...

Well, r3:17 I think you are delusional. Understandable but in the end delusional. You bought Jakes "I´m Jack Twist, really" promo during 2005/2006 hook, line and sinker.
I have begun to question everything he does for quite some time now. He is really flexible, he is, I think, really cold blooded and calculating as to what is helpful and what is hindering him. He is savvy, smart and a real business person. He´s after the mainstream approval now, shedding his old alter egos like snake skin no longer needed. He was the sweet boy with Kirsten, the nerd kid with his earlier movies, the smart but shy guy appealing to older women afterwards, the ambiguous young adult, open to whatever is presented to him, the tortured soul how doesn´t know what to do and the list goes on and on. Like most of the people you chose the persona you related to and now want this impersonation to be the "real" Jake. Unfortunately the alter ego you prefer is not what Jake is after at the moment.
In Jakes case you can really experience famewhoring at its best. That´s why I am fascinated by the hoopla he creates and am still interested in what comes next, because clearly what he is presenting now is as much fake as anything he has presented until Reeke.

Anonymous said...

So who is the real Jake?

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?

BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for change! The chicken wanted change!

JOHN MCCAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he was a maverick chicken, and he wanted to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

SARAH PALIN: The chicken had to cross the road because he was not able to find a bridge. Alaskans do not build bridges to nowhere. If he wanted a bridge, he'd have to build it himself.

JOE BIDEN: ; The chicken crossed the road because he was heading back to Scranton.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either for us or against us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL: Now, to the left of the screen , you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its lifelong dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2008, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eGGS, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken2008. This new platform is much more stable and will never reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

Before you heard or read about the rumors of him being gay you were a fan. There are rumors about Travolta, Cruise, Smith, Spacey, etc... What's the difference!

I'm Jake's fan. I have a problem with his bearding, not with his gayness.

I never said I was an expert, bully. I never pretended to know anything more than is open to explore on the net. Unlike you I don´t call anyone troll or babbler (you have a rather insalubrious obsession with the babblers, which in my opinion gives them more weight than they deserve).
I love gossip and I visit various sites, I mostly do not post anywhere, and certainly not on the GB site although I screen them for information. (This, btw. is an information not for you but for others that post here and are able to discuss Jake on a more rational level).
I followed gossip much longer than Jake is "in" and have noticed his different promo personas from the beginning. Therefore I "dared" to post about what is the most obvious trait in him. What remains is a slightly snobbish person, who likes to pretend that his real life resembles his movies while he promotes his movies or as long as this specific persona suits his current projects. Then he switches to the next impersonation he likes to portray/has to sell.
He is no hero and no victim and during the last year he worked hard to sell his new image and partly keep his old one without making it too obvious, which is making him increasingly unbelievable and slightly greedy, but nevertheless still interesting to watch. I was being clear enough stating that I think Reeke is as fake as anything before that, although I think he had much more fun pretending to be the carefree, open to everything person he pretended to be in 2006.

The only constant person in his life, not counting his family, was/is Chris, considering that he was the only one he took to premieres, festivals and lived with for quite some time without having any career benefit from doing so.

Jake was very "convincing" before Reeke.
I'm sure Jake wasn't pretending all the time (in the public) since he was 19.

Anonymous said...

He was the sweet boy with Kirsten, the nerd kid with his earlier movies, the smart but shy guy appealing to older women afterwards, the ambiguous young adult, open to whatever is presented to him, the tortured soul how doesn´t know what to do and the list goes on and on.

It's called growing up.

How convenient for Jake that his growing up phases coincidented so perfectly with his roles.
Don´t underestimate Jakes ambitions.

I don't see it, it's YOUR impression.

Anonymous said...

Jake has grown up. The only thing I don't like about him now is the tabloid attention. But I totally understand that he's gone through experimental phases, dating crazy girls aka Kirsten, probably sleeping with men, doing independent cinema, etc. but now, professionally, he wants a big movie and wants to be a leading man and he also wants a family and kids. He's a man now, not a boy.

Of course, you're going to call me a babbler, although I hate this site.

I'm sure you KNOW what Jake wants. LOL
I just love how babblers insist they have the right to post their shit here.

Why isn't he playing in a romcom instead?

Anonymous said...

PoP is better than a romcom.

Anonymous said...

If you don't think Jake is 100% gay, secretly dates Austin Nichols and has a secret baby with him and only beards with Reese (although he hates doing it and her so much), you are called a babbler or a troll.

Anonymous said...

Wrong 9:19 AM. Try again.

Anonymous said...

Babblers: Jake is 100% straight, Jake is perfect, Reeke is a match made in heaven.

Anonymous said...

Trolls: crazy babblers, "insiders", homophobic Jake fans, people who hate TBs.

Anonymous said...

The only thing I don't like about him now is the tabloid attention.

8:52, that's because Reeke want that. They use being together (I think they are) to promote their image, movies etc...
They are famewhores.

Anonymous said...

Now, Now, Now this is MEAN SPIRITED and solves nothing. As I have said before, I believe he is gay / bi, and since I believe he could be gay or bi, he and Reese could be in a relationship.

Let's pretend for a second that we have a proof Jake is bearding with Reese. Would you like him all the same?

Anonymous said...

I'd have no problem whatsoever if Jake was gay. You'll call me crazy, but I was always hoping he and Heath would get together one day. Happy end in real life when they couldn't have one in the movie. (Go on laugh!) Of course that's not possible anymore. :(
I think he and Austin had a little fling, but I also think he's dating (pretentious) Reese and that both are pimping out their relationship. I don't like them together and Jake's actions in the last year made me think less of him.

Anonymous said...

I'd have no problem whatsoever if Jake was gay.

How about bearding? No problem with that either?

Anonymous said...

How about bearding? No problem with that either?

If you can get the good leading man roles only if you are het then I can understnd. Much money is at stake. But he (or whoever does that) should have chosen a much less known beard, one that isn't so well known and dominant and makes him look like a wimp.

Anonymous said...

Of course I wish bearding wouldn't be necessary in this day and age. Unfortunately we still live in a mostly homophobic world. :(

Anonymous said...

It's called growing up.

Yeah, but does growing up automatically mean boring, conservative, & buying into the traditional lifestyle? Does it mean that free-thinking, open-mindedness, shaking things up and spontaneity are the things of childhood? To be left behind once you reach a certain age? I'm sorry, but I must have slept through the alarm for that. I see this all the time and I hate it. It doesn't have to. I don't like a tabloid relationship, even if Reeke are real, which I don't think they are. And children shouldn't be brought into the spectacle. :(

Anonymous said...

10:09 AM

"It's called growing up" was my comment about Jake BEFORE Reeke.

I'm sure Jake didn't change, he's just playing a part in Reeke for paparazzi and tabloids.

Anonymous said...

^^I hope it ends soon! I can understand it up to a point, HW being the way it is, but they really seem to have embraced it, especially Reese.

Anonymous said...

It's easy for her. Reese's public image is made up and fake from the start of her career.

Happy Birthday K.D. Lang!

'Milk's' James Franco makes a commitment

Lately, the actor has been pursuing projects that enable him to work with directors he admires. Soon he'll be seen as supportive lover to the title character in Gus Van Sant's 'Milk.'

James Franco is loosening up. That may seem an odd way to characterize an actor who is pursuing an MFA in fiction writing at Columbia University, taking classes at two other institutions of higher learning and preparing to play Allen Ginsberg over the semester break early next year.

But Franco, whose roles have generally followed the template set by his breakthrough performance as a brooding James Dean in a 2001 TV movie, has been showing off a lighter, softer side of late. He wafted through "Pineapple Express" on a haze of pot smoke, lagging languorously behind the beat as a permanently stoned drug dealer. And in "Milk," which opens Nov. 26, he displays a previously unexplored tenderness as Scott Smith, the longtime lover of Harvey Milk (played by Sean Penn), the openly gay San Francisco city supervisor who was gunned down in 1978.

"Reading the script, I knew that one of the major functions is to be the supporting boyfriend, what in a straight movie would be the supporting wife role," Franco said, grabbing a cigarette on the terrace of Manhattan's Bowery Hotel, a copy of Vladimir Nabokov's "Despair" close at hand. "For a female actress, maybe that would sound like, 'Oh, no, another supporting wife role.' But I've never been offered that part."

Although Franco and Penn had not worked together before, they had known each other for years, since Penn sought Franco out to praise his performance as Dean. "That was the best that a young actor could ask for," Franco says. Their off-screen friendship helped them convey the intimacy of a long-term love affair. "I just felt close to him. I have such admiration for him, I could just transform that into feelings in a relationship."

Although Milk's romance with Smith was the major relationship of Milk's life, Smith is a relatively unexamined figure. Franco supplemented the available material -- Rob Epstein's documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk" and Randy Shilts' biography "The Mayor of Castro Street" -- with first-person accounts from Smith's friends (he died in 1995), but he was mindful of the limited role Smith plays in the overall story. "I thought that playing it any other way than the supporting, grounding partner would hurt the movie," he says.

Franco is a fiend for character research, building on habits he developed playing Dean. He got his pilot's license to play a World War I ace in "Flyboys" and spent months learning horseback riding and sword fighting for "Tristan and Isolde." But he was frustrated when he thought the fruits of his labor failed to show up in the finished film. "I just felt like, sometimes as an actor, I was doing all this work that just disappeared into the air."

Franco says directing a few low-budget feature films helped him to see acting in a new light. "My directorial efforts I wouldn't say are the biggest successes," he says. "But one very positive thing that came out of them is I got a perspective from the other side, and I think it has really helped me as an actor to approach movies in a much more cooperative way. It's not that I was trying to sabotage any of the previous movies, but I was thinking about myself and my role in a much more isolated way."

For "Milk," director Gus Van Sant tried to bridge the gap between his previous experimental features and biopic conventions. An attempt to shoot scenes on the fly with a documentary cameraman was aborted, but Van Sant did encourage the actors to stray from the script. "You're going into a scene knowing that the other person can say whatever," Franco says, "so you don't get lulled into doing the lines the same way over and over."

"Jake pretended that his real life resembles Jarhead, Donnie Darko, Rendition, Zodiac ... or characters he played in those movies?"

He always tries to give the impression that his character has a resemblance to his real character. Like the story about fighting with this fellow in Jarhead, getting into arguments with his director during that time, quarreling with Sarsy, being a manly, slightly unbalanced person. This was a short phase, because as soon as it was clear that BBM would be much more successful he began his ambiguous Jack Twist impersonation, which lasted about 16 months and had lots of people fall hard for.
During the DD phase he played the NERD, the outsider, the shy, yet deeply affecionate one. Worshipping his girlfriend, not knowing exactly which way to go in this professional life. The indy boy.
During Zodiac and Rendition promo came the full beard, the shrewed comments, cutting back on his sexy image and starting to talk about family, responsibility and all that bs.

He is actually quite good in promoting whatever he has to promote. He is so successful that people really believe what they see.
At least there is hope, you see, when he has finished the promo for Brothers he will no longer have to pretend that he could be the reformed family guy. He will be the fighting prince, looking for the ultimate challenge and his true love, which can´t be Reese, right, so after the Brothers promo is done, he should be free and the charade should be over.
Looking forward to what comes next.
Would love to see some Chris and Jake chill out scenes, but maybe he values his privacy too much these days.

I would not put it past him. No really, I think, I would not.
But, you see, I guess he has no bad feelings about him being so duplicitous, because he probably thinks he´s giving his fans what they want to see. And by his fans I think he means the ones, who are going to pay to see him and buy the DVDs.

Jake didn't stop playing or being the nerd after DD.

No he did not but then he didn´t have to because his then persona suited just fine with Good Girl, Lovely and Amazing and even somehow with Moonlight Mile.

Jake can pretend to be whatever he wants. The problem with it is that his fandom is barely breathing at this point. I think people continue to come to these sites because they don't want to think they wasted several years of their life following Jake. I doubt that most of them will spend any money seeing his movies. Most IHJ fans didn't even bother seeing him in Rendition or Zodiac. As much as people insist that they love Jake's acting, they barely comment on his acting. If he wasn't good-looking there wouldn't have been a fandom to begin with.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see Rendition, you can guess why, but I plan to see all new movies. Jake's acting was the reason I've become a fan and I'm looking forward to more!

Everyone's so grumpy today. Let's be positive. Let's hope he has an incredible career and a good life. I hope one day they'll tear up that golden envelope and read out his name, an he'll come up on the stage, looking breathtakingly beautiful in his tux and lighting up the whole Kodak theatre with his smile and I know I'll be happy for him. I want to be happy for him.

I'm a fan of several "actors" because of their acting. I don't post on their fansites or blogs because I really don't care about their personal lives. I'm only interested in their talent and the roles that they play. If I was only interested in Jake's acting I wouldn't bother with these blogs. Look through the comments here and elsewhere. 99.9% of the comments are about Jake's looks, personality, actions or personal life. Nobody gives a sh*t about his acting.

Jake is a c-teaser, and his "vulnerable" little boy personna was very seductive, his gay stuff was delishous, his gorgeous male body WAS a dream, walking.

but he himself was "vulnerable" - as a person carrying an inner self image of a Crest toothpaste tube with bottle glasses. as well as his "family plot" got knows what that really is.

it was lovely to see him energized by his fan base, all of us - and respond! "getting you hot makes me hot!" what a sweetie.

but this can't last, look what happened to Marilyn Monroe.

Ya gotta get off that train, eventually.

okay, goodbye, its been good to know ya', only we don't ya anymore, Jakey. that's okay. or not.

whatever. I'd do him, if he'd just get that weight off, and take a bath.

PoP is the wrong career move if Jake wants to be known for his acting. It's a summer popcorn movie all about the special effects. I bet earnest Jake will have people laughing where there's no comedy intended.

That's my point. Why post here when there's no movie to discuss? Because the interest in Jake is not about his acting.

Yeah, PoP may be a good move if it makes him known as something other than Reese's rebound bf.

Because it's possible to admire someone's acting and be interested in him/her as a person.

What's interesting about Jake as a person? There's nothing admirable about him.

Anonymous said...

Jake as an actor. I agree that that none of the Jake blogs I've seen critique his acting honestly (it's not being "a fan"?) or frankly give a damn.

I think he needs good script, good director - well how many actors can take off on their own steam, anyway? Bardem was in a bunch of stupid films. (hey he was hot when young!)

& how many REALLY good scripts and directors are out there, anyway? brad silberman, cough cough. I think not. I like Hood, alot, but he is very young and innocent artistically although seasoned politically. Richard whathisname (DD) acts intuitively, as does Jake: they were a good pair.

Jake was miscast in Zodiac, and also Rendition. Moonlight Mile in my view was a disaster. Silberman, the Gyllenhaal family, and Dustin fuckin' around on the Vineyard - like the song, though.

I don't think the man is shallow, I think he's caught in H'wood culture (that stupid school they all attend) plus stage mommy, father liable to depression, gay stuff, money problems -

hey, Jake babe, who loves ya?

Anonymous said...

Jake will never be a great actor. He doesn't have that depth or range.

Anonymous said...

I've said this before, Jake's acting reminds me of Clooney's. Both not really great actors, but belong to the solid/good ones. If he's lucky and picks good projects, he'll be find. But don't expect him to pull what Johnny Depp did with PotC. They are not in the same league acting wise, Jake's more attractive though.

"Moonlight Mile in my view was a disaster.

Huh?"

Many loved this film. Some of us did not. Silberman too involved in his own grief. Very inbred film - Naomi involved, Silberman on the Vineyard still stuck in grief, lotsa frog kissing. Terrible script. No back story for the main character. Dustin's ego and his own take on story entering in - it was a fucking mess! Good sound track, though!

Anonymous said...

4:00 PM, Naomi? Like Jake's mom? She was involved in the project?

Question, is it true that Jake's mom somehow helped Jake get the role in DD? True or BS?

Anonymous said...

Hehy, 4:02, I know that Silberman summered on the Vineyard. And that wonderful opening shot of Jake walking on water was photographed on the Vineyard.

SURELY they were are involved with this project - but how? Silberman was not really ready, that is, out of his grief stuff, to write a script.

Naomi visited the set of MM, that was documented.

Also interesting that she was with Jake at Brothers filming - Reese left by way of a diff'rent entrance.

Not too interested in following a theory that Naomi has alot of influence - however (cough cough) I think she does.

No dissing the Mom - that's what Moms do -

I wish I had parents with influence in Hollywood. Sigh.

No idea, but Jake was good enough in October Sky to earn Donnie Darko.

Anonymous said...

Ask the average person on the street right now who starred in Zodiac? Rendition?. They shrug. This is Jake's new fan base.

Then ask them who starred in Brokeback Mt. Everyone knows. It's the only film people recognize him readily.

Outside this blog or other Jake blogs , no one gives a fuck about Jake Gyllenhaal. He's screwed his chance with the general public to capitalize on A-list fame with this Reeke business.

Anonymous said...

What happened to the fresh kid from October Sky?

Anonymous said...

I think you're right that many recognize him as Reese Witherspoon's boyfriend.
In Germany Reese is very known and Reeke are featured in rags here quite often. They are on the cover of the current German Life and Style mag.
Die hard DD and BBM fans recognize him too, though.

Anonymous said...

If PoP is a BO success, many more people will know him and he'll have a bigger fanbase. Probably mostly young, straight women/girls.

Anonymous said...

"Brother's screening."

right thanks.

Anonymous said...

Well, my hope is that not only will PoP be good and enjoyable, but that it will make Jake more well known, so that he can do the films he wants to do, large blockbusters or small, independent films. I also want to hear his name announced at the Kodak theatre someday, and to see that look of happy surprise that he's won. I follow his career because I do like his acting, his remarkable beauty and his quirky charm. That was because of the beautiful Jack Twist. :)

Erik Hyman and Max Mutchnick

MAX MUTCHNICK has “shpilkes.” Mr. Mutchnick, who used the Yiddish word to describe his restless energy, didn’t become a creator and executive producer of the sitcom “Will & Grace” by being a blushing wallflower. “I’m a big personality,” said the impulsive Mr. Mutchnick, 42, who melds borscht belt shtick and urbane wit in his writing and his life.

So it was unusual for him to be intimidated by Erik Hyman, an entertainment law associate at the Los Angeles firm Loeb & Loeb. “He’s out of my league,” was Mr. Mutchnick’s initial impression. “I’m Mel Brooks, and he is Anne Bancroft. He’s this sophisticated, elegant guy, and I’m the kind of guy who would have a piece of toilet paper stuck to my heel.”
...
Within three months they were talking about having children, and 20 months later, in September, a surrogate gave birth to their daughters, Rose and Evan.

Marriage was a tougher issue. “I always thought it was silly to get married if it didn’t matter legally,” Mr. Hyman said. That changed in May, after a California court legalized same-sex marriages. Still, as new fathers in the process of moving into a new residence, their preference was to wait before planning a wedding. But Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative aimed at banning same-sex marriages that is up for a vote Tuesday, altered their time frame.

“We wanted to be a part of the wave of same-sex couples getting married before the election,” said Mr. Mutchnick, referring to the more than 22,000 lesbians and gay men who have wed there in the last five months.

On Oct. 25, the couple vowed their love before Rabbi Lisa Edwards as they stood beneath a vine-cloaked pergola on the grounds of their Tudor-style Beverly Hills home. Each of their 30 guests participated in the combination wedding and Jewish baby-naming ceremony. The bridegrooms doted on their six nephews and four nieces while pacifying their infant daughters with their pinkies.

“I told Max and Erik they can interrupt at any time,” Rabbi Edwards said, as Mr. Mutchnick, always the producer, abruptly halted the proceedings to turn off a fountain that was burbling off-cue. “He’s a show runner,” Mr. Hyman said with an amused sigh. “He likes to run a show.”
