A recap of the Outfest Legacy Awards...

The Outfest Legacy Awards was a relaxed, fun and moving event last night with a lot of stars on hand including Ewan McGregor, Molly Shannon, Kristen Bell, Mary McCormack, Wilson Cruz and the evening's host Bruce Vilanch. McGregor presented an award to honoree Bruce Cohen, producer of such films as "American Beauty," "Milk," and TV's "Pushing Daisies." Cohen is a dedicated LGBT activist and a longtime Outfest supporter.

"I always knew there'd be a night when I'd want to give (a kiss) to a boy I love and tonight is that night," Ewan said. "To know Bruce is to adore him."

Cohen received a standing ovation as he took the stage and got his award: "I kissed Ewan McGregor on the lips!" he said. "That's what this whole thing was about. Ewan is truly a gorgeous human being inside and out." The newlywed also gave a call to action to defeat Proposition 8: "This is our history folks, happening right here in our state, in our lives, in the next 41 days. It's our history to make or break."

NBC co-president Ben Silverman was there to represent honoree NBC-Universal for its distinctive history on innovative LGBT promgramming including "Will & Grace," just about everything on the Bravo network, the feature films "Brokeback Mountain," "Far from Heaven" and the upcoming "Milk." NBC also aired such breakthrough TV movies as "That Certain Summer" and "An Early Frost."

"My mom is gay and I wish she could be here today," Silverman revealed to the audience. "I know we all have personal stories here...this is sharing and being human."

Outing Mama

Accepting Outfest Legacy Honor for his company Wednesday night, NBC-Universal Entertainment co-chair Ben Silverman outed his mother: "His speech outlined the company’s continuing commitment to the community, then ended on a personal note.

'I debated whether or not to say this, as I am a bit of a press target,' said Silverman. The audience was waiting for him to come out. 'No, it’s not me,' he continued. 'But my mother is gay.'"

"Benjamin Silverman (b. August 15, 1970) is the co-chairman of NBC Entertainment and NBC Universal Television Studio. He is the son of Mary Silverman, a programming executive ... and Stanley Silverman, an award-winning music composer/arranger."

Hm... did Ben outed his late father too?

Newman's Own Foundation Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Paul Newman

(January 26, 1925 - September 26, 2008)

Remembering the life and legacy of Paul Newman, Newman's Own Foundation has issued a statement.

The statement, from Vice-Chairman Robert Forrester, follows: "Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.

"Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.

"An exceptional example is the legacy of Newman's Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds $250 million.

"While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago. He saw the Camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.

"In Paul's words: "I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."

"Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness. His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.

"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person."

Wonder if it will be Team Reeke approved for Jake to comment on the death of Paul Newman. Jake has said how Uncle Paul taught him to drive and he was a sort of godfather to him. Also wonder if Jake will fly in to attend a funeral. If he does, I hope that he doesn't disrepect the occasion by turning it into a Reeke photo op.

He used to joke that his epitaph would read, "Here lies Paul Newman,
who died a failure because his eyes turned brown."

...
And while he came from the "Method" school of acting that relies on
performers probing their own psyches, in private life, he didn't seem to care
for that much fuss, saying, "A man can only be judged by his actions, and
not by his good intentions or his beliefs
."

He became known for his liberal politics and his food company, Newman's
Own, which has raised more than $200 million for various charities ("The
embarrassing thing is that my salad dressing is now outgrossing my films,"
he said.)

He's been married to Woodward, his second wife, since 1958: they lived in
Westport, Conn., far from the Hollywood glitz. He had tragedy in his life -
his son Scott died of an accidental drug overdose in 1978 - and he reacted
by setting up a foundation to educate people about drug use.

His great love in life was car racing, driving and owning a team of cars; at
70 he became the oldest driver to be part of a winning team in a major race,
the 24 Hours of Daytona.

His final film was about car racing: he was the voice of Doc Hudson in the
animated movie Cars (2006). He announced his retirement from acting
shortly after that, saying he was having trouble remembering his lines; last
month, he stepped down as the director of a production of Of Mice And
Men at Westport County Playhouse because of his health.

It was the end of a career that spanned the golden age of movie stars and
the new generation of intense actors: glamour met the Method in Newman,
and for half a century he represented a coiled sexuality on screen and a
humane decency off it. He died a success, his eyes still blue.

Yes, I love how the babbler puts that in just to excuse Jake (ONCE AGAIN) from commenting about Heath's death. These idiots will use ANY excuse--including the death of a screen icon (which Jake will never be) just to pardon the immature, obnoxious behavior of their idol who could care less about their existence.

Well, it's been well known from being written up at IMDB for years. Anyone can access that.

I am neutral on Jake these days, still think he's gay and frontin' but I take a backseat and just duck in now and then on occasion. I am curious tho', as to whether Paul Newman's death will bring about new paparazzi pictures of Jake with Reese, "cementing their love", as happened with Heath's death. These events are also a show and tell for PR in Hollywood, sadly.

On a more human level, I am sure Jake will be saddened and upset as will everyone who knew Paul Newman.

Changing Lives

Paul Newmans' Camp provides such life changing opportunities, not only for children. Volunteering at HITWGC and running the NYC Marathon on the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp Team provided me with hope and faith in people - an inspirational charity in which Paul Newman paid attention to, personally. His appearance in NYC prior to the marathon spoke to his dedication and support to the many people who support his legacy. He was a man of integrity with a presence that was overwhelming and engaging - it was not about him, it was about the children, which is rare in our society today. So often actors/actresses do things and it is about them, he was a silent leader who lived what he believed in.

Jake's a solid actor and I was drawn to his charms a couple years ago. But I've always noticed a bit of "fakeness", I ignored it because I was crushing on him.
He's typical Hollywood fake, charmer. I've come to realize that. Many actors are like that. But he's not as special as I wanted him to be.

I don't know who posted that but it's quite perceptive and it's as I've come to believe about many a hot Hollywood player, not as they seem. Not bad, by any means, not wicked, but very "aware" of how they need to play the game, lie, ignore and deflect many things and treat other people, to get where they want to be. Acting is a bit like politics in that respect.

I doubt Kiki was a beard. They were fooling around. Maybe what Ted said is true and Jake was fucking Austin as well while with Kiki. Who knows?

Who indeed. And you know what, Kirsten Dunst could be gay and playing mimsy for the cameras with her guys and we'd never know goes on past that (if it does) because all you see is what the magazines and photocalls want you to see, as endorsed by publicists. Trust no-one I believe was the famous one-liner.

Someone mentioned Lainey further back. Don't visit much. All I can say was how hilarious the "cell phone" picture was of Jake and Reese "canoodling" at a conert, taken "offside" by a "random witness". Ha ha. OK. Well, at least it gave her some thrills, and I'd never want Lainey to be unhappy. Life's too short.

People will come out only when they're ready to and when they feel the climate is right. For some it never will be and others they'll find their path when they find it.

Interesting to compare Newman's background to Jake's being raised up in the sorta rarified atmosphere of H'wood - Bubble Boy indeed! - pretty inbred community.

Newman growing up in Shaker Heights Ohio, Navy, Kenyon College (good theatre program, one of the best local repertory companies, Yale Drama, Actors Studio - his first films at age 29. First marriage at 24, and three children.

His early life experience much more broad, and demanding.

Interesting.

Remembering legendary actor Paul Newman

He made my Son happy

My sincerest gratitude to Mr. Newman and his Hole In The Wall Camp. My Son, Michael, got to enroll at the camp a few weeks before he died of cancer, Aug. 16, 1995. The team at the camp was wonderful. Mikey even got to go scuba diving in the pool. As we were driving him to our home in Massachusetts, all he could talk about was his scuba diving. He relapsed and died a few weeks after. My family and I are extremely grateful for Mr. Newman's efforts and establishment of the camp. May God bless your soul.

Thank You!

Sincerely,

Posted on OMG - Check out Jakeseyelashes, DC forum. Another ACLU winner who recently had lunch with Jake posted a summary report.

Posted by royandronnie, today at 10:29:00 AM

To all my fellow Lashers,

This is for those who are waiting to read about my Date With Jake.

Sometimes, when a loved one dies in a nasty accident, the relatives are advised, 'best not to look; try to remember them the way they were.' It is with this kind of idea in mind that I'm letting you know that there will be no account published. You read Lisa and Ted's joyful version. I prefer to spare you the mess I made of mine. But here, for the morbidly curious, is the brutally abbreviated version:

Jake's PA introduced me to a couple dozen people in that 3 1/2 hour day--a stunt man, the female lead, a couple makeup and hair artists, the costume designer, one of the producers, a senior video tech, the documentary filmmaker, the movie's publicist; I was introduced as Jake's guest, and in response everyone treated me though I were a visiting celebrity myself.

Every one, that is, except the one I had come three thousand miles and ten months to meet. The contrast, unfortunately, etched itself in acid as the day went on. He was wearing a dust mask when we met, which he made himself remove only with an obvious effort, and I'm afraid that was a portent.

Oh, he was casually friendly, all right, but he kept himself almost literally at arm's length the whole time, touching me just three times--to shake hands at the beginning and the end, and to spread his hand lightly over the middle of my back in our picture. I did make him hug me at the end, but I assure you neither of us got any joy out of it.

What went wrong? Well, he'd been shooting 10-hour days plus for better than two months. The dust mask was because he was getting a cold and trying not to cough during the takes (his face hidden by a hood.) I probably did not approach him that well--he expected, and pretty much explicitly said as much, eventually--to be bombarded with intricate Brokeback-related questions; I tried to make friends with him instead. But the bottom line is this: between the time I was finally greenlighted and five days later, when, in London I made first contact with his assistant, my day had been pushed back one day earlier...because he had gotten permission to go to New York for the weekend. I think you can draw the correct conclusion here as swiftly as I did. From that moment on, my ship sank swiftly and inexorably.

So there he stood, slamming my Seventies-educated sensibilities with his (naturally streaky) mane and light beard. But this wasn't just any tall, dark and hunky. This was Jack Twist, looking back at me with the same unforgettable, unbelievable eyes that had looked with love and longing after Ennis Del Mar after the Dozy Embrace. The eyes, the sculpted brows, the perfect mouth, the startling smile, the long lean body, the large, strong, square hands--they were all present in every achingly familiar particular, down to the (obscured, but still detectable) mole over his upper lip and the one high on his left cheekbone. And, like the Grand Canyon, no amount of photography or even video, can prepare you for the impact of the real thing. But there was no one home. Though if I looked hard--and I did--I could just make out someone moving around inside behind the closed curtains. Half his attention was on his work, and the rest was on what would happen next. There wasn't much left for me. He never even noticed my replica Heath tattoo, or the Brokeback bracelets, though I did try to draw his attention to them all through lunch. It was like trying to get hold of a bead of water sliding down a pane of glass--on the other side.

I think he did try; no, I know he did, at least once. But he just couldn't bring it, and, after a while, neither could I, really.

Don't expect to see the picture, either. I've seen a couple pictures of Jake with fans he didn't especially care to be photographed with, and though I'm sure it'll be a little better than that, I expect it to provide an unpleasant confirmation of my failure.

I would like to thank four people who did bring it on that day after September 24th:

*Meegan Lee at ACLU/SOCAL, who put up patiently and graciously with an increasingly agitated me over the last two months and tried so hard to make this happen.

*Michael, the film's publicist, who treated me to a special, friendly, lengthy, and enthusiastic tour of the movie's three spectacular and atmospheric sets.

*Izzy, Jake's PA, who worked some kind of magic behind my back and got me the full hour of lunch with Jake that I begged for and was not going to get because they were shooting without breaks. She also scammed me a free ride home from the director's personal driver in his personal BMW. And at the end she managed to get me an introduction to...

*Sir Ben Kingsley, whom I had made it clear I really wanted to meet also, but who was represented first by Izzy, and later by Jake and the producer as forbidding and unapproachable. Sir Ben then turned out to be gracious and forthcoming, rising from his chair and coming to greet me, apologizing for being unable to shake hands with me due to extensive hand makeup, and within a minute I felt with him the rapport I could not for the life of me create with Jake. And, though as a British citizen nothing they do affects him in any way, Kingsley then expressed his appreciation--twice--for the donation I had made to ACLU...

...something Jake never quite got around to doing.

Lord help us all, he was so, so beautiful.

Let Annie Proulx have the last word:
'There was some open space between what he knew and what he wanted to believe, but nothing could be done about it and if you can't fix it you got a stand it.'

2:53, I agree. He shouldn't do this if he can't muster up any enthusiasm to make a fan who loves his work and who is one of many responsible for his fame and fortune happy--even for five or ten minutes. And by the way, if it wasn't for Brokeback Mountain, he wouldn't be in the position he's in now. He owes a lot to that and the fandom that put him on that pedestal. The least he can do is fake it--just like that racist, pretentious bitch he's with. Take lessons from her.

I really do think that a lot of people have confused Jake with Jack Twist. Others have confused him with a caring, thoughtful, charming, loving and generous person. Jake is just another spoiled, egotistical Hollywood player. The fans are falling fast. He'll never reach the level of fame that he had after BBM. PoP is two years away and it's not going to garner the fanbase that BBM did.

Anonymous said...

Why do I get the feeling that some people think Jake owes them something because they are huge BBM fans?

People are always saying that he's even more beautiful in real life. Mind boggles.

Just because someone is beautiful physically doesn't mean they're beautiful inside. BIG difference. In Paul Newman's case, his beauty matched his inner qualities.

I have a close friend of mine who's stunning--and is one of the nicest, most generous and thoughtful people I've ever known.

And then there are those who are beautiful outside and empty inside.

So lets talk Brothers

We all believed that Brothers would be released on December 4th, as that's what the IMDB was going with. But I noticed that they were pretty much the only ones that had any date for the film. So I did a bit of digging and last week was told that a release date hasn't been finalized yet. The date was going to be finalized this week but as of now its still up in the air. As soon as I know, you'll know.

Jeff Wells has put together his Oscar balloon and has mentions for the film and the boys - Jake and Tobey. Wipe away those tears because Fanatical found a nice breakdown from a screening, which paints Natalie's performance in a really good light.

Someone called Brothers Spy spoke to an IMDB poster that had attended a screening for the film. The IMDB poster told him this:

"Jim Sheridan was there, he actually sat behind me during the audience feedback session. I got the impression from his reactions that he wasn't entirely happy with the way the film has turned out thus far, but i'm just guessing. I saw the other producers there, but none were recognizable. This was the first screening. The questions being asked led me to believe the producers saw this film as being in good shape. They said that the release date of the film was December 4th. I heard from 19 other test audience members who were much more positive in their praise for the film than I was. They seemed to really enjoy it. None of them, however, had seen the original film and none were very familiar with film in general. I believe I suffer a slight bias due to my appreciation of the original film, but only a slight one. My major issues with the film are the scenes of brutality that feel very toned down from the original version. I have many complaints, but that is my main one."

Brothers Spy spoke to him again and got some more details about the performances, and this is Brothers Spy relating what he had been told:

"Nearly everyone in attendance, including the guy I spoke to, loved Jake and Natalie's characters and their performances. In fact, everyone loved that storyline the best. The crowd was about evenly divided on Tobey and his character. The guy said that Tobey starts very weak, but finishes strong. As for Jake and Natalie, they have A LOT of chemistry together. There's a lot of sexual/romantic tension between their characters which is both very believable and palpable.

Everyone, except my guy, said they would recommend the film to their friends. The film got an average of 4 votes out of 5, on those questionaires they hand out. Jake and Natalie got 5 out of 5 by 17 out of the 19 people who stayed behind. Tobey however got an average of 3/5.

The only two things people seemed not to like were: Tobey's unsympathetic character and they didn't like the beginning or the ending which has some narration apparently (neither the original film nor the adapted script had this).

As for the guy's personal opinion, the script, he believes, was the weakest part of the whole thing. He says, despite a couple of differences from the original film, it's pretty much a straight forward adaptation. Yet the original film was written in 2002, before Iraq. But this films takes place in 2007, yet Iraq is never mentioned which he find weird."

Can't wait to see it.

I've yet to hear anything negative about "Brothers", except for this imdb poster but he was biased cause he watched the original.

This Brokeback fan who visited Jake needs to get a grip. I'm sure Jake is tired of hearing anything connected with Brokeback anymore, probably mostly because of the obsessive fans. There's hope with the success (hopefully) of his upcoming movies he can move on from all this and his fans too. I mean it's about time.

No.

When exactly was this ACLU lunch? If it just happened, does that mean that Jake's in NYC this weekend or does it mean that he'll be here next weekend? Also, next weekend is the Avon walk that the Chin is supposed to be at. Did Jake actually get time off to fly to NYC to be at this walk with the Chin? If that turns out to be so, I think I will have lost any love or respect I have for him.

We don't know Jake, we don't know Royandronnie. There could be 100 different reasons why Jake kept his distance. Maybe he didn't like her, maybe he didn't feel like pretending, maybe he had a bad day on the set, ... or maybe Royandronnie's expectations were to high.

I saw Maggie Gyllenhaal

This morning I put on my new galoshes and went out to get coffee down the street at Gorilla Coffee. Maggie Gyllenhaal was sitting on the bench outside drinking her coffee and talking about wanting to get into producing. I went inside and got “on line” (more on that below). Instead of staring star-struckedly at her, I watched everyone else watching Maggie G. There weren’t any paparrazzi, there weren’t any autograph-seekers, but people in the coffee shop were definitely aware of her celebrity presence.

That’s my first celebrity sighting in New York. Jodi, who is visiting this weekend, wishes I had seen Jake Gyllenhaal. Ali is jealous of the Maggie sighting, but is holding out to see Steve Buscemi, who apparently also lives in our ‘hood.

Jake made a statement once that he always tried to give people he met, interviewed with etc "a little something". That was pre Reese of course. If he was too tired for the meeting, they should have rescheduled it. Reese can afford to toy shop in $900 shoes but I am sure the guest had to reach deep to come up with their ACLU contribution.

Let's get one thing clear - noone is ever going to forget Brokeback - period. And I don't think Jake or anyone else would want us to. It put him on the map. But, I can also see where he would want to also focus on his current projects. I'm puzzled by this account of the ACLU luncheon, but the PoP filming seems to be very hard work, hot, dusty, so I can see where he might have tried to do his best, but was not quite able. Who knows how exhausting it is, or what is going on personally for him, or if he even felt up to it at all. It sounds like due to the filming schedule, it almost didn't happen, despite the best of intentions. He did sound preoccupied, and I'm sure it wasn't personal. It is interesting that Sir Ben was so gracious, and Ted and Lisa's account was so different, so you just never know. I feel badly that RoyandRonnie's meeting was such a disappointment for her.

Oh those shoes - I love them, they are just gorgeous, but where she's so petite, she's got to watch the scale of her accessories - oversized bags, jewelry and shoes like that are too big for her petite frame. Sorry to sound catty -

Yeah Reese is a small woman but she has broad shoulders and thick arms and thighs and always a little belly. If she didn't work out so much she'd be fat just like the rest of her family. The shoes she wears are very expensive but ugly.

Anonymous said...

If Reese didn't go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money on clothes and accessories in her attempt to look young and cool, how else would we be able to get so many laughs at her expense. Also, if Reese really exercised as much as she would like us to believe with all those pap pics, she'd have a body like a model-instead she has no muscle tone and flabby;that means not enough exercise.

Why not? Jake buys $250 jeans and $75 T-Shirts. Reese came into her money in her mid 20's-Jake grew up with alot of money. If he can book private jets, I'm sure $900 shoes are not a big deal to him. But, how many people think he's really in love with her?

I think at first it was great to be desired by an A List, Oscar winning actress and it was fun, but I think they started to grow tired of each other. Though they'll stay together for a while because they use their relationship to promote their movies, it's also good for both their image.
It won't last for too long though.

I just wish we'd find out one way or the other, if they are a real couple, or if they are not. Not that I don't think Reese is attractive, I do. And she does have great legs, and high heels look good on her. These just seemed to overwhelm her a little, like she was on stilts. She does seem to be going for a bit more edgy style, which is a good thing. I'll always be a fan of Jake's, but I don't know about being a fan of J&R. I thought she was great in Walk the Line tho. It's just that since all of this, he seems to be a little bit different that who I thought he was, but that's ok.

I realize that the rich are different than you and me (for the most part!), and there's nothing wrong with buying $250 jeans and $75 t-shirts and $900 shoes. But it almost seems as if that's all Reese cares about, that's the difference, shopping, or that's the image being presented of her - different than Jake's socially aware and environmentally conscious image. He seems passionate about things, she seems detached. He seems egalitarian, or at least his lovely parents made their children aware of how others live; she seems a bit snobbish. She seems conservative; he seems more liberal. Just from what I can observe, I may be all wrong.

Out in Hollywood: Starring Roles Are Rare

To the commenter who suggests it's time to move on from Jack Twist and BBM. That only works when there is something to move to. Jack Twist captured everyones heart and was so well done, he seems real to this day. The characters in Zodiac or Rendition? Sorry, did nothing for me and one of them even was a real person. When Jake pulls off another role equivalent to Jack Twist, or even the Joker, I'll move on.

First, Reese HAS to look cool and younger than she is, because she is with a 5 years younger hottie, who is naturally beautiful, has God-given looks and doesn't have to work too hard to look cool. She knows it well. She's given birth to two children and it's harder to stay in shape after two pregnancies. You just become kinda stretchy:)She has great legs just like Kirsten. Jake likes his women long-legged, I guess. He himself has long, lean legs that go for miles and look extremely good in jeans.

Second, both Reese and Jake are very wealthy and I can't see anything wrong with that. They are movie stars, for god's sake! Jake has always been wearing good-quality clothes, Reese obviously has an obsession with shoes.

Heath Ledger's estate to go to daughter: report

SYDNEY (AFP) — Heath Ledger's two-year-old daughter Matilda Rose will inherit the late Australian actor's entire estate, estimated to be worth 20 million dollars (16.6 million US), a report said Sunday. The 28-year-old actor, who died in New York in January from an accidential overdose of prescription drugs, had named his parents and sisters as the beneficiaries in his will, Perth's Sunday Times reported.

The will, which has been probated behind closed doors at the Supreme Court in Perth, was made before Matilda was born, and there had been speculation that the child's mother, actress Michelle Williams, would lodge a claim.

But Ledger's father Kim has put an end to such speculation, revealing that Matilda will inherit the lot. "There is no claim. Our family has gifted everything to Matilda," he told the News Ltd paper.

Ledger's will listed just 145,000 Australian dollars in assets and cash when it was drawn up in 2003, but the Hollywood star's estate is now believed to be worth more than 20 million dollars, the Sunday Times said.

The Perth-born actor gained international stardom and was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a gay cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain". Critics have hailed his performance as the deranged Joker in the recent Batman film sequel, "The Dark Knight".

Elizabeth Taylor on Newman: 'Pure Integrity'

Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who memorably sizzled onscreen with Paul Newman in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' (for which he received his first Best Actor Oscar nomination), shares her thoughts about the late screen legend with ET:

"I loved that man with all my heart," she says. "He was goodness and kindness and pure integrity. I know he loved his family, his wife, the world and mankind. He was purity of heart. Working with him was such a joy. Knowing him, being his friend, was as golden as the sunset and a privilege I'll never forget. I thank God and feel so honored for that privilege. May he be in God's embrace forever."

Reese is promoted as a person just like you and me - single, working mom dealing with all the same problems and pressures. She even bakes cookies, recycles, walks the dog! We have so much in common with her, right?

But, $900?

That could be a families mortgage payment, hospital bill, a month's worth of groceries, several for utilities, car and insurance payments, and even the amount of a person's weekly check. And she spent that on shoes.

The same, my ass. She's an arrogant, self-entitled, marginally talented PR whore.

Guess there is some justice in this world, however, she's reduced to walking dogs to promote herself and at least the man I'm dating
isn't hiding in the closet.

So, what do you expect from her? To buy her clothes at Wal-Mart? I don't understand. For centuries, the rich have been wearing clothes which the rest of people simply cannot afford. That's the point. Dior, Chanel, Jacobs, Versace, etc. have been creating things for people who can afford them. I wonder what YOU would wear if you had hundreds of millions in your bank account. Are you suggesting she should have given these 900$ to a poor family instead of buying the shoes? She can afford them, she buys them. She wants to look good just like any other woman. Plain and simple. I would buy these shoes if I could. Since when Hollywood is saving money on clothes? :)

You sound jealous.

That's not the point - of course we know people with more money can afford the best and most expensive, and designer clothes and accessories. The point is, from all appearances, she's somewhat snobbish and doesn't get involved in causes for those less fortunate, and is content with that life in a Hollywood bubble of endless high end shopping and restaurants. She is involved, to the minimum possible it seems, in Avon's breast cancer representative, but she seems dispassionate. That's the thing, it seems like she doesn't care about anything. At least Jake's parents made a point to teach their kids about others less fortunate than themselves, which is the majority of the world, whether in America or third world countries. There's nothing wrong with buying shoes, I love them myself, but to do nothing but that gives a shallow impression. That's the point - not the clothes themselves. While people obviously work hard for their money and have a right to spend it the way they want to, there are many people less fortunate all over the world for whom $900 is a king's ransom.

Jake's changed too, can't risk having a political opinion because it might harm his career and rish offending the majority of ticket buyers, she doesn't either, where does she stand on things, except in high priced designer platforms? Maggie has an opinion now and then, I like that. And I still wonder about why no statement when Heath passed away, but right at Reese's side during the whole thing. With Robert Redford making a statement, an equivalent iconic film and role, and Liz Taylor, it just makes ya wonder.

From 'Changeling' to 'Che': 10 top picks from this year's lineup

Last year's New York Film Festival gave us "No Country For Old Men" and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." This year, the festival, now in its 46th year, offers a crop of equally enticing and sobering movies. On the slate are 28 films from 18 countries, helmed by veteran and first-time directors.

"The Wrestler"
"Changeling"
"Che"
"The Class"

"Wendy and Lucy"
Wendy (Michelle Williams) sets out from Oregon to Alaska in the hopes of finding a job at a fish cannery. With her dog, Lucy, at her side, Wendy quickly runs into hardships and relies on the generosity of strangers to get by-that is, when strangers are willing to be generous. Kelly Reichardt directs with her trademark nuance and minimalism.

"Hunger"
"Ashes of Time Redux"
"A Christmas Tale"
"Gomorrah"
"Bullet in the Head"

Wendy and Lucy (Kelly Reichardt, 2008)

Kelly Reichardt, one of the true mavericks of the ailing American independent film scene, delivers what is easily her most accomplished work yet with Wendy and Lucy. Stripped down, but thematically rich, it’s able to produce reverberations about America at large, while never betraying its ultra-specific scenario. Reichardt begins with a simple setup. Financially strapped drifter Wendy (Michelle Williams) and her dog Lucy are traveling by car to Alaska, hoping to find employment in a cannery. She wakes, at the start of the film, to discover that her vehicle has broken down somewhere near the Oregon/Washington border, setting off a series of bureaucratic tangles that demonstrate just how close she is to falling into financial and social oblivion. This brief exposition results in a small story, focused on minutiae, but thanks to sterling execution and a tone that deploys exactly the right amount of sentimentality, Reichardt is able to make it feel utterly universal.

From the start of Wendy and Lucy, the audience is made acutely aware of Wendy’s precarious financial situation. As a result, each subsequent expense that she’s forced to incur becomes cause for alarm, since each drags her closer to ruin. Throughout the film, she makes tough choices, which are doubly heartbreaking because they pivot on the decision to spend a few dollars. The movie’s determined focus on Wendy’s place in society and its superb sense of location (the settings include such everyday locales as a grocery store, a dog pound, a service station, and the woods near Wendy’s broken-down car) place the film squarely in the tradition of the Italian Neorealist filmmakers. While the notion of a modern day, American-set Umberto D sounds ridiculous and overly precious on paper, in Reichardt’s hands, it feels a natural progression of the genre. Among today’s filmmakers, only Belgium’s Dardenne brothers would seem capable of orchestrating this kind of effortless, simultaneously expansive and utilitarian character drama. Reichardt’s similarly minimalist and socially aware Old Joy was hobbled with a litany of symbolic missteps (i.e. the political radio broadcasts, the on-the-nose dialogue scenes, the exaggerated relationship the lead has with his wife, etc...). Thankfully, any such stumbles are absent here. This film unfolds with the subtle grace that only a master storyteller can achieve.

It is some kind of miracle that a movie set in America in this day and age can feel as elemental as Wendy and Lucy. The spirit of westward expansion embodied by Wendy renders the film a distinctly American expression, though. It’s equally incredible that a story featuring a major star could place so much importance on poverty without shaming itself, but Reichardt guides Williams to do what is easily her best work. Her soulful, understated performance feels lived in. It’s as if Wendy’s been defeated so often in her life that she scarcely continues to fight. Williams, eyes to the floor, anchors every scene in the movie, never for a second pushing against the boundaries of believability. Even as Wendy’s desperate situation magnifies every triumph and setback, Williams remains a remarkably grounded presence. It is quite likely the year’s best screen acting. Wendy and Lucy may be a small movie, but it feels about as perfectly conceived as a small movie can be. Call it a minorsterpiece, if you will.

Out in Hollywood: Starring Roles Are Rare

"Openly gay can still mean they would rather not talk about it. Most gay actors are mum in public or on the set, even if they don’t hide their orientation in private, actors and others in the entertainment industry said. Although most may no longer participate in charades — the “girlfriend” on the red carpet, for instance — many adopt a don’t ask, don’t tell policy.

Why? For both men and women, being openly gay, at least for now, means giving up any hope of superstardom.

“The industry is persuaded that being known as gay will undermine your credibility both as romantic lead or an action star,” said Larry Gross, director of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California and author of a book on media portrayals of gays and lesbians.

“They don’t test it,” he said. “We’re waiting for the Jackie Robinson moment when someone tests that assumption and discovers it’s not true.”

Jack Roosevelt "Jackie" Robinson (January 31, 1919 – October 24, 1972) became the first African-American major league baseball player of the modern era in 1947. While not the first African American professional baseball player in United States history, his Major League debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers ended approximately eighty years of baseball segregation, also known as the baseball color line, or color barrier.

"I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant."

Google Co-Founder Brin: Our Company Opposes California Anti-Gay Marriage Measure

On Friday afternoon Google Co-founder Sergey Brin explained, in an entry written on Google's blog, his company's decision to take an official public position against Proposition 8, which seeks to ban gay marriage in California.

"As an Internet company, Google is an active participant in policy debates surrounding information access, technology and energy. Because our company has a great diversity of people and opinions -- Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, all religions and no religion, straight and gay -- we do not generally take a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues. So when Proposition 8 appeared on the California ballot, it was an unlikely question for Google to take an official company position on.

However, while there are many objections to this proposition -- further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text -- it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 -- we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love."

I'm so happy to hear this - now we know where to spend our hard-earned bucks, Levi's, Google, Pepsi and others. Yay for all of these companies who are brave enough to stand up for the rights of others instead of always putting the bottom line first. It is fundamentally an issue of equality.

I have no problem with stars spending money on good clothing. The problem with Reese is that all she seems to do is shop, she wears things that are not appropriate for the moment (those latest shoes are something you wear on a date, not a trip to the toy store with your kid) and she rarely wears the same thing twice. In contrast, we see Jake in the same clothes all the time. He may buy nice clothes, but, at least pre-Reeke, he did more than just shop. Reese is either a compulsive shopper or someone trying to fill a hole in her life by shopping. Seems to me she might need a real boyfriend and some real friends.

Jake Gyllenhaal will never be a Jackie Robinson. He doesnt have the stones.

In contrast, we see Jake in the same clothes all the time. He may buy nice clothes, but, at least pre-Reeke, he did more than just shop.

I loved this about Jake; it showed me that his mind was elsewhere, on things other than his looks and clothes. And his beauty is exquisite, even more stunning when it's in its natural, ungussied up state. In fairness to Reese, being a clothehorse may be part and parcel of being an actor, not always what you want to do, but comes with the territory of doing a job you love.

All the signs of greatness

DVD Review

FOR A FILM THAT REVELS IN THE obsessive pursuit of information, the original DVD release of Zodiac last year was a disappointing affair. The film was a still a masterful slice of cinema, but the package failed to delve further into the case, the film and the importance it held for everyone involved, not least director David Fincher, who grew up in the San Francisco Bay area during the era of the Zodiac killer. That oversight has been thoroughly righted with this belated UK release of Zodiac: Director's Cut.

Of course, there wasn't much wrong with the film in the first place to necessitate a major "director's cut" re-assembly, so take the title with a pinch of salt. The changes are mainly cosmetic, with a few additional dialogue sequences laying out the investigation in yet more thrillingly intricate detail. The most noticeable difference is the reinsertion of a brilliant three-minute audio montage over a black screen that splits the film into two distinct acts. Compiled from news clips and snippets of pop songs from the era, it signals the passage of time in a far more audacious fashion than the "Four Years Later" break in the original cut. It also marks with more authority the change of focus that occurs in the second half of the film as the trail went cold and San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) started to become more proactive in pulling together the facts of the case. So why wasn't this in the original? As Fincher told me when I interviewed him a few weeks ago, he saw too many twitching heads during the test screenings so "made a few concessions for the multiplex".

That's further proof of changing film-viewing habits, with DVD and Blu-Ray ironically becoming the definitive formats for cinephiles. To this end, the extras on this edition of Zodiac are worthy of the film itself. There's an exhaustive 100-minute documentary chronicling the actual case with new interviews and archival material, as well as a considered and entertaining commentary from Fincher. There's separate cast and crew commentary too. Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr (who plays strung-out San Francisco chronicle reporter Paul Avery) are particularly good value, especially when joking about Fincher's attention to detail, with the former ridiculing his director's request that he should learn how to put a 1970s-style nappy on a baby because his character had young kids ("Just for the record, never needed to, never did it …"). Best of all, James Ellroy, the self-proclaimed "king of American crime fiction", joins the commentary for no other reason than he wants to acknowledge Zodiac as "one of the half-dozen greatest American crime films of all time".

I can't argue with him.

Jake is 27 years old. He's still a kid. Unfortuately everthing he does is magnified 10X. He doesn't owe anyone explaination. He hasn't been in rehab or jailed for fighting in the club.

^^^ here we go again! ^^^ Give it a damn rest Anon 10:58. GET OVER IT.... nobody's gonna speak to please your a*s.
His life, NOT YOURS! Know the DIFFERENCE!

Would you calm down! Everyone has a right to express their opinion. Some still aren't over what happened 8 months ago.

^^ Are you joking? The immaturity of this subject matter (what happened 8 months ago) with some posters is really frightening. If they are still talking about (what happened 8 months ago) a year from now, only some type of therepy may help the poster get over the cruel and unusual punishment that Jake caused them. Still Basket Cases!

Anonymous said...

What are you talking about 2:15 PM? It's not what Jake did to the fans, it's about disrespect toward a colleage and supposed friend. People will move on from it eventually, but never forget it.
Get off your high horse.

^^Immaturity according to whom? Everyone gets over grieving and tragedy in their own time. And the loss of Heath is a terrible tragedy, the depth of which will still echo for many years to come. We may still be talking about "what happened 8 months ago" ten years from now, so get used to it.

"Jake Gyllenhaal will never be a Jackie Robinson. He doesn't have the stones."

1. That's what alot of people said about Jackie Robinson before he became 'Jackie Robinson - sports hero'.
2. Jake has the stones; he just doesn't have the backing. Who is Jake's Branch Rickey?

I think that Jake and Jackie have a lot in common. They're both professional, well-educated, extremely talented, family-oriented (we'll skip the *public* absence of the Gyllenhaal/Sarsgaards for now), patient, willing to *reform the system from within* and deceptively courageous.

Jake took the most difficult part in the most controversial film in a generation., and gave an absolutely brilliant performance, a performance, by the way, that Mr. Ledger *could not and would not* have given. And Jake bore 90% of the cultural and political burden of BBM. He courageously faced down homophobes and conservative critics repeatedly both before and after BBM, and he never ran away from the film, unlike his illustrious co-star. This is an extremely courageous man.

But his career suffered, franchise negotiations stalled, he didn't have the clout/money to get the roles he really wanted, and a series of difficult personal challenges in 2007 took the fight out of him. The fact that gay gossip columists started to invent wildly inaccurate (babytile, co-habitating with BF) stories about him didn't help.

And ultimately, there was no homosexual love affair/romance to go home to. He wasn't in love then, and he isn't in love now. What exactly was he sacrificing his career for? And why sacrifice when you're being trashed by your own people?

Standing up for principle is easy when you're successful and you have lots of emotional support. By the time Rendition bombed, I don't think that Jake believed that he had either. So, he opted for a clear professional solution with a nearly guaranteed big pay day.

Jackie Robinson did and said some things before his stint with the Dodgers that would boggle your mind, and yet events and good fortune turned him into an unlikely cultural hero.

The second chapter of Jake's career has yet to be written. He didn't make the rules in Hollywood, but I still believe that he's trying to bend them. It won't happen until he achieves a level of financial success.

When will you learn that your OPINION is NOT a fact?

This is a big reason why we love Jake, and this is why we shouldn't "move on" from BBM; it would be a disservice to Jake and all he's done. :)

Why do some need to put Heath down to make Jake look better? Both were great in the film, in fact all four main cast members. But it was Heath who carried the movie and if he didn't do such a great job, it wouldn't be what it is now.
BBM will never be forgotten.

Bullshit like "90% of the cultural and political burden" only makes you look like a fool. Geez.

Anonymous said...

I didn't see it as putting Heath down - I do feel that the role of Jack was a bit more difficult than Ennis, not technically but socially, as I think was mentioned in the After Elton piece about Brokeback being not only one of the best gay films of all time, but just one of the best films of all time, period. 2:24's comment doesn't make them look like a fool at all. They make some good points, we don't have to agree word for word, or reject it entirely because we don't like a line of it.

"When will you learn that your OPINION is NOT a fact?"

When will you learn to address the substance of a clearly stated, well-analyzed opinion instead of slinging insubstantial mud? If you can't keep up, ie. state your opinion in a coherent, well-analyzed manner, then stop wasting bandwidth. 2:24 made a lot of sense.

No, it's not putting Heath down. LOL.

I know I'm happy Heath did great, if he didn't the movie would have sucked. He deserves all the praise he gets.

2:24, excellent post. But I have a quiestion for everyone: many people keep mentioning that 2007 was difficult for Jake, esp personally. Why? Have I missed anything?

Anonymous said...

No I don't personally (I am not 2:24), and I wouldn't boil it down to the sex act only, why some do I have no idea, nor phrase it as crudely as that. But society certainly seems to focus on that only, with all the silly and ridiculous jokes that ensued after. 90% of the burden is 2:24's opinion, but it does seem Jake was the brunt of more of than his share of ignorance and stupidity.

From After Elton:

Jake Gyllenhaal is flawless as Jack Twist in arguably the movie’s most difficult role. But Heath Ledger’s heartbreaking portrayal of Ennis Del Mar, a walking cautionary tale of homophobia’s logical end result, is a revelation — a total acting transformation made all the more tragic by Ledger’s death earlier this year. But the indignities and injustices that Jack and Ennis faced did not end at Brokeback Mountain’s closing credits. Upon the film’s release, the movie’s makers and fans were subjected to a six-month orgy of tasteless jokes from clueless comedians and bile-filed commentary from right-wing pundits. All of this negativity culminated when the movie, long considered the Oscar front-runner, lost Best Picture to a fine but unremarkable movie called Crash, perhaps the most egregious upset in Oscar history and almost certainly the result of lingering homophobia in Hollywood’s old guard.

You love to play dumb, don't you? lol

2:24's comment - these are OPINIONS, NOT FACTS:

a performance, by the way, that Mr. Ledger *could not and would not* have given

Jake bore 90% of the cultural and political burden of BBM

he never ran away from the film, unlike his illustrious co-star

his career suffered

there was no homosexual love affair/romance to go home to

Heath gave his all for this role, his heart and soul. It's ok to like Jake's performance better, but it annoys me so much that Heath must be put in a bad light to make Jake look better. It's not necessary.
Like, love and praise Jake all you want, just leave Heath out of it, if you don't have anything nice to say.

Anonymous said...

But I have a quiestion for everyone: many people keep mentioning that 2007 was difficult for Jake, esp personally. Why?

We know about Zodiac and Rendition disappointments, the rest is speculation.

Anonymous said...

I loved Heath's performance. It's just Jake seemed so fit for Jack. People all over the world fell hard for the dreamy-eyed Jack Twist and he broke a gazillion hearts. Heath was praised for his acting skills, esp by critics, but Jake, in addition to that, has become a gay world's most heavenly pin-up boy and women couldn't stop going "awwwwwwww" over him. He was the essence of Brokeback:the blue-eyed dream, the luscious temptation, freedom, desire, love. His character was more attractive than Heath's. That's why I think somer people say Jake exprerienced more of Brokeback craziness than Heath whose Ennis was a very difficult character.

Anonymous said...

They were not disappointments; you never know how box office will be, and that in itself doesn't mean a film is good, just a financial success. He has to keep remembering that none of the movies with Rendition's subject matter were not box office smashes; he should not take that personally. And everyone agrees that Zodiac was a great film.

Anonymous said...

He [Jake] was the essence of Brokeback:the blue-eyed dream, the luscious temptation, freedom, desire, love.

I love this description of Jack; great post 3:13. I had forgotten about that; how all of the sudden fame and attention might have been offputting and a little frightening for Jake. I did find Heath physically beautiful too tho.

Anonymous said...

Zodiac and Rendition were big disappointments - Hollywood needs profit and actors who can carry the movie.

Anonymous said...

3:13 PM, Jake's character and Jake himself are more attractive than Ennis/Heath and of course all the gay men and straight women fell for him.
The cast did a wonderful acting job in BBM, but I think if Heath, who was responsible to carry the movie, failed, the movie would have probably failed. He was very believable and carried the movie successfully. I think he deserved all the praise he got. But it wouldn't have been the same w/o Jack/Jake. He was charisma personified. That's why so many fell for him. The movie had a great cast.

Anonymous said...

I noticed that some fans of Jake were jealous that Heath got most of the praise for BBM when the movie came out and still seem to hate it.
It's time to get over it and move on.

Anonymous said...

I may be a minority of one, but I felt Jake made the right call in not making a public statement around Heath's death. They did not become fast friends, as did Newman and Redford. Jake and Heath and Michelle were no doubt still on a Brokeback high when Jake was named godfather, a "natural" consequence, it seems to me, of "Jake and Heath made out and Michelle got pregnant" joke.

Both Heath and Jake in their "career" mode apparently needed to move on from Brokeback to re-establish themselves as straight arrows.

Attending the L.A. service, as I gather he did, was sufficient.

Also, that he was posting Pix of Heath in his prison cell on set of Brothers around time of Heath's death, shows either some "warm feelings" OR ELSE homophobic jesting - whichever, "keep a lid on it, man. . ."

Jake's made pretty good calls, although I cannot for the life of me figure out the Reese Ruse.

Anonymous said...

3:33#2, I would have been ok with him not paying tribute, but he should have been more low key and not walking around seemingly happy with RW. Then you start to wonder, he seems ok, so why wasn't it possible to release a statement then? It's still weird to me.

Anonymous said...

Please 3:40 PM, Jake looked sad and down in those dogs walking pictures.

Anonymous said...

3:47, of course he looked down, it was just a few days after Heath's death. But in the other pictures he seemed fine, so it couldn't have been that hard to say somthing.

Hollywood has no interest in actors who don't produce box office results. They are interested in investment returns, not artistic merit. That is just a bonus. Jake has a lot riding on the success or failure of POP. No one to hide behind this time if POP does prove successul financially.

To try to pull out one element of BBM as the thing that made a difference is ludicrous. Every element hit a home run. Script, cinematography, direction, casting, musical score. They all came together as if by magic which is what made it so special. A movie that will still be a classic 25 years from now.

Anonymous said...

4:21 PM, no it's Jake who made BBM. Do you hear me? Jake, no other elements.

4:21 ahem cough cough you did not mention the original story provided most of the stunning dialogue and description and the great characters, as the scriptwriters and Ang acknowledged, And yes all fell into place - magically - for it was a story waiting to be told.

Not only can Jake do no wrong but again, I do think that the federal bailout of $700 billion dollars to settle the country's economic debt should be given to Jake for blessing us mere mortals with the awesome majesty of his transcendant existence. There is nothing on this planet that he can do wrong nor no action that cannot be vindicated. And even if he did wrong, look at Zeus--the king of the gods who was able to do anything he wanted with impunity. Jake is on that level--people should know that.

That woman from DC who had that disappointing lunch with Jake should know better. Just breathing in the same rarefied air as Jake (a deity on this earth) should have more than sufficed for her. Ungrateful minx.
