Gay Heroes

Handsome, charming and openly gay, actor and presenter John Barrowman has become one of the best-loved faces on British television. But, as he explains to Alice Wignall, success has brought unexpected responsibilities

John Barrowman thinks that I fancy him. I'm not sure why - I said something complimentary about the male characters in Doctor Who, the series in which he makes occasional scene-stealing appearances as Captain Jack Harkness, and he appropriated it for himself, because he's gorgeous and used to people fancying him. Now we're talking about the fluid nature of sexuality and attraction. "You could find Captain Jack attractive. Hey, you could find John attractive," he says, twinkling away at me like a rope of promenade lights on a gusty night, "and I could find you attractive. But that doesn't mean that anything's going to happen." I am suddenly hotly aware of the close confines of the dressing room buried beneath the BBC's Television Centre in which we are cocooned. "Right?" he says.

Too right - not least because of the new BBC1 show he's here to talk about. The Making of Me asked three celebrities to use scientific testing, psychology, brain science and genetics to investigate the origins of their defining characteristics, each in their own show. Vanessa Mae asks why she is musical, Colin Jackson wonders why he is fast, and Barrowman finds out why he is gay: a fact which I think is going to stand in the way of our blossoming mutual attraction. The results of the programme - is it nature, is it nurture? - are a closely guarded secret, though Barrowman has always been convinced that sexuality is not a choice. "I've always known who I am," he says. "That's what I believe. I feel I was born this way. I've never questioned that."

Until now, of course, and the issues that the programme addresses do raise one potentially uncomfortable point: if the conclusion is that homosexuality is a choice, learned behaviour or the result of a particular experience at a certain time, does that mean that gay people can choose again, or unlearn their preferences? Could he? "It's not going to change who I am," he replies, instantly. "I always said, if the outcome is you're born this way, I'm going to be ecstatic. If the outcome is that it's something that happens to you, a trauma or it's your choice, I will have to reflect and think about that, but it's not going to change who I am because I like who I am." If it is a choice, it's a choice he'd make again.

And why wouldn't he? As he tells it, Barrowman's experience of life as a gay man has been overwhelmingly positive. At 41, he has a supportive and devoted family, a 15-year relationship with his partner, Scott Gill, and a successful career (before starring in Doctor Who and its spin-off series, Torchwood, and graduating from there to appearances as a judge on the find-me-a-star reality shows Any Dream Will Do, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? and I'd Do Anything, he enjoyed a long and happy period as a leading man in the West End, mainly in musical theatre).

He mentions interviewing a Seventh Day Adventist "ex-gay" man while filming The Making Of Me, who believed that homosexuality was incompatible with a fulfilling life. "His idea was that you had to have the white picket fence and the farm and he was talking about it like it was something that I could never have," says Barrowman. "And I actually said to him, 'Yeah, but Ron, I have a partner, I have a dog, I have really nice cars, I have a beautiful home, I have a home by the sea and the beach. You can have that and be gay.' But he just couldn't see that."

Barrowman can see it. He and Gill are thinking about having children. "We're building a house in Cardiff on the beach. We're going to have six bedrooms in it and we feel like we've got a lot to offer." He says that from talking to different families for the show - both accepting of homosexuality and not - he learned that "a family unit is what you make a family unit".

Almost the first thing Barrowman does when he starts talking about the programme is insist that he's not a campaigner. "I never thought I would be like this," he says. "I never thought I'd be someone who would stand up for 'the cause'. I don't want to be a militant gay, because that's not me." But it's clear that he is naturally possessed of strong opinions. Since he and Gill became civil partners in 2006, Barrowman has always been adamant that it's not a "marriage". "I don't call it 'marriage' for my own reasons - and I would suggest to gay men and women that they don't call it a marriage, because it connotes religious organisations that don't like them, and why do we want to take that on board?"

But the recent escalation of his fame has put him in a position where he senses an obligation to do more. "I have to put it this way," he says. "There are some days that I sign, like, 400 pictures, autographs and stuff. And among those I generally get a bunch of, say, four, five emails and some written letters from young men and women who are struggling to come out of the closet and they don't know who to turn to because they're afraid of their family's reaction and they're afraid of their community's reaction. So when they approached me to do this [The Making of Me], I thought, 'Yeah, you know, I really kinda have to do it.' I do think I've got a responsibility to help change perceived attitudes or try to change them."

It's all a bit at odds with Barrowman's popular image, which starts with his showman's grin, an expert line in saucy banter and a reported fondness for showing everyone (especially co-stars who are trying to film a scene) his penis. His autobiography - Anything Goes, of course - tells stories of a carefree life in the limelight, hanging out with Claudia Schiffer on Valentino's yacht and having affairs with Spanish flamenco dancers called Paco. It's not that Showbiz John is a character that Barrowman plays for the public. Though he's clearly a born performer, there's no hint of concealed anguish beneath. It seems that he really is this upbeat, this positive, this happy, all the time. In TV appearances, he throws himself into the job with force: always eager to get the joke, make the joke, be the joke. It looks like uncontainable exuberance; sometimes it looks like he is having so much fun he may burst.

There is, actually, something slightly comic about Barrowman. He's so absurdly good looking, for one thing, and in such an obvious way: the teeth, the hair, the wide cheekbones and the blue, blue eyes. His American accent is almost too reassuringly warm (though he is able to segue into a broad Scottish brogue in seconds, a legacy of the first nine years of his childhood spent in Glasgow before moving with his family to Illinois, which is incredibly disconcerting; like being dragged across the Atlantic by your ears. He says both accents are his "natural" one) and his speech is peppered with phrases that, looking back, seem like fortune-cookie clichés: "I don't ask that you like me. I just ask that you respect me," is a favourite.

But at the time, and on him, it all works, because it's so patently sincere. He is just instinctively polite - waiting for me to turn over the tape in my Dictaphone before continuing a point, which hardly anyone ever does - and conscientious, diligently checking his notes from the programme to make sure he's getting it right. He is thoughtful and articulate, talking in long, seamless sentences, with passion and certainty. He might employ a hackneyed phrase every now and again, but it's because he believes them. And he has a natural solidity. You can see why he works on stage: he's tall and broad and booming; he's sure of what he's saying, and of himself.

In that, he's similar to his Doctor Who/Torchwood character, Captain Jack, who first appeared as a wayward interplanetary scoundrel who found friendship and redemption in the company of the timelord. On the one hand, he's cookie-cutter, old-school hero, all jutting jaw and big guns. On the other, he's a cheeky pan-sexual adventurer ("so many species, so little time") who landed a kiss on Christopher Eccleston's Doctor in the concluding storyline of the first series.

But - and this seems to be very Barrowman, too - Jack feels no tension or conflict about who he is. He lives in the confident expectation that the universe will order itself around him. Which it does. Captain Jack is one the best-loved of the returning characters - Torchwood was created pretty much to keep him on our screens - and his unapologetic eye for the gents as much as the ladies seems only to add to his appeal.

"I was doing a signing at a convention," Barrowman says, "and this father brought his son over and he said, 'Do you want Captain Jack's autograph?' and the kid said, 'Yeah, Dad, I don't care if he likes boys, he's still my hero.' And I thought, 'That's why I'm doing this.'

"I'd love to be a hero and that's why I love playing him, because he is a hero. But then, funnily enough, people have written to me and said I am their 'hero'" - he says the word with self-deprecating verbal air quotes - "because of standing up for what I believe in".

John Barrowman - The Making of Me is on BBC1, July 24, 2008

Hmmm, is Jake happy he distanced himself from Heath & TDK??"

Odd considering his own sister is in TDK.

I also thought that the number of photos coming out of this Paris trip were a sign that they were there creating photo ops for a magazine spread. And now, sure enough, US Weekly proves me right.

ITA.

Anyone seen TDK yet? I'm going tonight.

who also tries to distance herself from Heath as much as possible, and she's in the film with him!

"Odd considering his own sister is in TDK"

Huh? what's that got to do with it? He didn't attend the premier & we all know about his silence re Heath.

Everyone I know wants to go see TDK and I'm not talking bloggers who are into HW gossip. These are friends and work people who don't give a sh*t about HW. I'm so glad for Heath and it saddens me no end to think he is not here to see it all....

Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya (Spain), from October 2nd to the 12th

Thanks for posting about this. Sounds fantastic. Damn, I just got back from Spain.

And Evie, thanks for the Heath news.

Kind of impossible for her to do that considering she's doing press for TDK and Heath is ALL the journalists want to talk about.

Anonymous said...

^ well, she's just refusing to say much about him - she's said much less than Bale, for example, even though many of her scenes are with the Joker.

I think she's staying clear of the subject mainly due to Jake, as someone else suggested.

The ticket sales for TDK are going through the roof, I read. Hmmm, is Jake happy he distanced himself from Heath & TDK?? Man, isn't Karma a BITCH!

hehe, very true!

Maggie has definitely talked about Heath at the press junkets--in interviews in print and lately on the TV tour. Even if she wanted to, she can't escape the questions and she has been talking about how great Heath was and how it's so sad he can't be there. She talked about him quite a bit at the premiere to the press.

And than Eckhart, Oldman, Caine and Nolan. Hats off to the Gyllenhaals, that's the way to treat a buddy! /sarcasm

Saw TDK. Heath was absolutely freaking AMAZING. My god. Gary Oldman was great, too. The film's pacing is not perfect, but it's dark and epic and brilliant in parts.

Austin's supposed to be in Italy this week.

UPDATE: Studio sources tell me that record-breaking advance ticket sales for Warner Bros' Batman: The Dark Knight "continue to grow at a pace unlike any other film in history". Even the number of locations in North America where the comic book caper will be playing -- 4,366 -- is an Industry record. There are also approximately 3,000 theaters that will start screening the Christian Bale/Heath Ledger actioner at 12:01AM Friday. Meanwhile, every IMAX show in New York City this weekend is sold out.

heath will get the best-supporting actor nom. and since almost every director & all actors think he is phenomenal, he will win. not that an oscar matters that much, but I'd like to see the validation for his daughter's sake.

maggie is getting good notices, too. gary oldman, mon amour! always brill. christian bale, just great.

it would have been fantastic if Jake could have supported the film as part of the fraternity, so to speak. not that I ever imagined jake, christian, maggiepeter and heath all at the premiere together (well, maybe in some fantasy), but more as part of the same scene.

remember when jake and austin went to heath's casanova opening?

instead, jake is now fame-whoring it up in paris with that phony soccer frump mom. he is so out of the circle of cool, it's not even funny. dressing in heath stripes and knitted caps won't get him in, either. not with that 200-lb chin tied to his leg.

ITA, to me, the total nonchalance about Heath is just appalling to me. Not only is he not been at any of the memorials that we know of for sure, not said anything about Heath's passing, he's living it up in Europe during a black carpet premiere for the costar of his best performance, and supposed friend, and father of his goddaughter. I'm going to go back to my original prediction that Brokeback is going to be the highlight of his career, he'll probably do well at the box office in mediocre-to-good films, but I doubt he'll ever have an artistic achievement like Brokeback ever again. Those types of films are one in a million, and he wants to distance himself from it for popularity. I understand it's a competitive business and it's his livelihood he has to think of, but to me this is unbelievable. It's just so painfully obvious that his life is being played out in the likes of OK, Star and People. What a disappointment. :(

Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal Both Have a Crazy Heart

Maggie Gyllenhaal has signed on to play the lead in Scott Cooper's upcoming music-based film Crazy Heart. According to Variety, both Jeff Bridges and Robert Duvall have also come aboard the CMT Films project.

Cooper adapted the screenplay from Thomas Cobb's debut novel of the same name. The story revolves around a struggling alcoholic country western singer that is only able to get his career back on track through his relationship with a female reporter. Bridges is set to play the bummy musician, while Gyllenhaal will star as his muse. T. Bone Burnett is set to produce the music for the film.

Shooting will start next month in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I have no more interest in these silly photo ops. All I can think of is that he abandoned his friend and goddaughter for a relative newcomer in his life and her kids. Wearing stripes, second and third hand accounts on live journals, nothing will make up for what hasn't come from his own lips personally. I frankly am no longer that excited about any of his films.

6.14 ITA. Jake has gone beyond the point of no return IMO. Everyone is talking about TDK and Heath & the hype around the Paris vac of Jake and his beard is already dead in the water.

I'm very happy that so many people are loving TDK and it's getting phenomenal reviews. No doubt we'll all get chastised my Miss Supreme High Babbler that it's none of our business to criticize poor grieving Jake, but that's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it. Jake is nothing like I thought he'd be, seemingly every bit of the spoiled, entitled, selfish HW actor, not in touch with the real world.

Hell, I won't be going to see any of his films just because having to sit 90 mins watching him will annoy the crap out of me! Maggie G is also getting there fast. Not that I really have anything against her, just that she reminds me of her PR whore brother...

Super Sibs:

Alas, like in nonceleb life, most truths fall somewhere in between the two categories previously discussed. Read on to find out...

We spoke with Shannon Fox, relationship expert and one steely emotional purveyor when it comes to celeb sibling rivalry. So why are famous sibs often at war with one another? “Siblings battle for their parents' attention in the home...celebrities aren’t battling for their parents' attention, but the public’s attention. The competition is on a whole different level,“ Fox claims. “They have a lot more weapons in their arsenal.” Guess if you’re pissed at your sis, there’s never a pap too far away to listen to your rant.

6:14 AM & 6:31 AM WORD!

No credible reports, no pics of him attending either of the LA memorials so as far as I'm concerned he wasn't there.

His actions speak louder than words - he has dissed Heath with the Soho and now the fireworks photo ops. For shame Jake, for shame!

Maggie's career approach is more like what I thought Jake's would be - films with something to say and the occasional good blockbuster. All of the problems Nailed has had has turned me off to it, I doubt I'll be seeing that. He just seems too young and entirely wrong for the part too. Brothers probably I'll see because it sounds like something that's more to my interest. PoP, I'm no longer sure about - I associate it negatively with Reese now. I know it's a tough, competitive world out there, but if he couldn't be bothered about the tragedy of Heath, I don't know what to say. How hard can it be to at least pay tribute at a premiere. If he says anything during a film promotion, I'm turning off the TV in midsentence on him.

Anonymous said...

Me too. :/

How can he be so insensitive? Even Heath's fans seem to have been more affected by his death than Jake. Unbelievable.

Anonymous said...

I don't know, but it's irreparable now - he's had many, many opportunities to do something and he obviously doesn't want to, but to add insult to injury, he's blowing smoke about it. At least be honest that you don't care. The loss of a few fans won't make that big of a difference for his brilliant career, so I won't follow him anymore.

Posted on OMG - Us Weekly "story":

If you wanted proof that the London/Paris trip was for PR, check out the US Weekly story. It's all in there. The main focus of the article is that Reeke and kids are a FAMILY. Here are some highlights-

*Jake took the kids to a high end Paris toy store and let them each buy one toy, he acted very fatherly

*The Paris trip was a trial run to see how Jake would do at parenting

*Reeke spent time alone together in London and then she sent for the nanny and kids

*Once the kids were there, everything was about them

*Gyllenhaal family says Reese "is exactly who they want him to be with" (I guess she's not who the G-fam wants to be with though, considering they never spend any time with her)

*"The feeling in the hotel was that they [Reeke] were the kids' parents- they were that close."

* They're putting off marriage until his schedule puts him back in LA.

Anonymous said...

So much BS - it's all very nice, but the kids already have a father, and Jake's parenting ability should have already been proven - AT HOME, not in an unreal atmosphere. I really feel badly for Hollywood children. This is more about readers' fantasies than reality. Bleech! I'm glad I didn't put away my sick bucket.

7:06am, you can't believe anything that Jake said at the lunch. This was a pre-arranged day. Jake already knew exactly what he would say about Heath and every other subject they discussed. And, remember, he is an actor. I'm sure he can make any emotion seem sincere. Jake knew that these people were big fans and after their day together, Ted and Lisa would blog about their day online to the whole world. Almost better PR that his photo shoots with Reese.

Anonymous said...

6:55 ITA agree with you except for the "brilliant career" part LOL

I guess he's ashamed of being associated with a brilliant actor and sweet person like Heath but not with a fake talentless PR whore like Reese. He deserves his beard and I don't feel sorry for him at all.
He has no identity anymore, even the media sees him as Reese's little bitch how pathetic.

Anonymous said...

"Reese's little bitch" - it was like that from the start. Jake's role in the PR campaign is to make Reese look good, strong, in charge, desirable, yada, yada, yada.

Anonymous said...

7:10, because I don't know if I can believe it. Plus, it's just the way I feel about it. Maybe someday, when I'm over the shock, I'll read it. Who cares what I think anyway? I always like Reese but this ruthless behavior I see on her part and now his, I'm disappointed at. I guess I'm very naive. Also, I can't watch anymore, this trainwreck of a PR campaign. Maybe its me, but a romantic vacation with my love in Paris does not include work. It's so obviously part of the job.

7:06am, you can't believe anything that Jake said at the lunch.

I'm not saying Jake was telling the truth and nothing but the truth, just it's harder to lie eye-to-eye.

He bought them a white pony and a plastic sword? LOL!

*The Paris trip was a trial run to see how Jake would do at parenting
Oh, I thought he was spending heaps of time with Reese at her house but they all had to go to Paris for 4 days to see if he'll be a good parent?? LOL!

*Reeke spent time alone together in London and then she sent for the nanny and kids
And there are no pics?? We get pics if Reeke buys coffee but no London pics?! He was never with her. LOL!

*Once the kids were there, everything was about them
Sure, those kids benefited sooo much from those photo ops & the paps constantly in their face! Great Mom!

*Gyllenhaal family says Reese "is exactly who they want him to be with" (I guess she's not who the G-fam wants to be with though, considering they never spend any time with her)
Jeez, I never knew the G family hated their son so... I'm shocked!

*"The feeling in the hotel was that they [Reeke] were the kids' parents- they were that close."
What?! they didn't know they were Ryan's kids!! Don't they have tabloids in Paris?! LOL

They're putting off marriage until his schedule puts him back in LA.
Put off again? damnit!

No it's not. If your profession is to make believe and get people to believe whatever you're portaying at the moment, then, as a good actor, you should be able to look the Pope in the eye and lie convincingly.

I understand that everyone handles things in their own way, and that possibly he's in a very serious relationship, but surely he could take an hour or two out of his busy life for Heath? Look at Naomi Watts, she's married, a mother of a young baby, but she was there for Heath from the very moment she heard about what happened, and helpful to his family. She acknowledges that Heath was important to her, as a human being. Her husband understood too. It was a beautiful thing she did.

I can never be a fan of an actor who doesn't share my values. I shouldn't be a "fan" anyway, I should just enjoy an actor's work only. That's what I'm going to do from now on. I wish I had never gotten caught up in online fandoms, but it's my own fault that I did. I'll go back to see a movie only if it appeals to me, and if it doesn't, I wont.

Reviews are in: Heath Ledger steals the new Batman movie...

I'm reading nothing but raves for Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker in "The Dark Knight" which opens Friday. In reading them, I just felt really sad all over again over what we have lost. But how great that we have his classic performance in "Brokeback Mountain" and parts in other really good films ("10 Things I Hate About You") and even good performances in not-so-great movies.("The Four Feathers").

It's so tragic that there won't be more. Here are some excerpts from some of the reviews for Heath:

The main reason that the film works is the performance of Heath Ledger as The Joker. It's simply riveting. After the carefully-crafted origin story of Batman Begins, director Christopher Nolan wisely shifts the focus off of the Pointy-Eared One and onto the villain who would make him fully realize his potential as Gotham's savior: the mysterious and horrifying Joker, whose refusal to compromise plays foil to Bruce Wayne's own internal conflict. And I cannot imagine that any other actor could have realized this part with the nuance, the bravado, and the sheer balls that Ledger brought to the role.
-- Brian Juergens, AfterElton.com

Heath Ledger's mesmerizing, scary-funny performance begins with the creepiness of his image: the greasy long hair, the makeup that looks as if he'd drawn it on with crayons, then messed it with tears. ... This Joker may be a torture freak, but he also has a lost quality, a melancholy hidden within those black-circled eyes. He turns slaughter into a punchline; he's a homicidal comedian with an audience of one -- himself. In this, the last performance he completed before his death, Ledger had a maniacal gusto inspired enough to suggest that he might have lived to be as audacious an actor as Marlon Brando, and maybe as great.-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Joker is more than wild. It's a tribute to the power of Heath Ledger's transcendent performance in The Dark Knight (* * * * out of four) that we can watch him, transfixed and deeply unsettled by the character's creepiness, laugh at his comic menace, and still manage to block out thoughts of the actor's tragic and untimely death. This is a career-making performance if ever there was one. Too bad it was a career-ending one as well. Actors are sometimes described as "disappearing into a role." Never was that term more fitting than in the case of Ledger. To go from the taciturn ranch hand in Brokeback Mountain to the randy philanderer in Casanova to the mid-career Bob Dylan in I'm Not There to the embodiment of comic book evil is a stunning trajectory.

I'm stating these facts because there are some who say Jake can't go to the premiere or do anything that would pay tribute to Heath because he's in a relationship with Reese and has to attend to her and her family. Huh, Naomi is in a relationship and has a growing family and yet she consistently pays tribute to Heath, with whom she lived with for several years.

Leslie Jordan talks movingly about his parents...

So the oh-so talented Leslie Jordan gave an interview to MSNBC that, dammit, almost had me boo-hooing in this press room at the Beverly Hilton. He talks about his new book, "My Trip Down the Pink Carpet," and it's the questions about his parents that just gave me a lump in the throat.

Here they are:

Q: You dedicate the book to your mom, and say you are very proud to be her son. Tell me about her, and the influence that she had on your life and career.
A: My mom will never march in a gay pride parade with a big sign. She is very private. She lives in Chattanooga. She tries so hard to understand me and my life. But she said to me once, "Leslie, if I live to be 105 I'll never understand this need you have to air your dirty laundry. Why can't you just whisper it to a therapist?!" She doesn't understand. I was raised in a religion that I never felt embraced me. That wasn't her fault. I had this amazing childhood. My mother is of her generation. If I'm going to ask her to accept me exactly as I am, I have to give her the same. She has read part of the book, but my sisters told her which chapters not to read!

Q: You say that you think your dad went to his grave ashamed of his son. Have you come to peace or closure with the loss of your father and how he felt of you?
A: [Recently], the most amazing thing happened. My mother told me a story without realizing how important it was --if she had told me earlier I wouldn't have been in therapy for 20 years! When I was 3 years old in 1958, I said I wanted a bride doll for Christmas. My dad was an army guy, man's man, sports guy. He said "over my dead body." Christmas Eve all I could talk about was the bride doll. And my lieutenant colonel of a daddy went out in 1958 in the hills of Tennessee and found his 3-year-old son a bride doll. He just wanted me to be happy. I'm so relieved. I wish he was around for all of this.

Lindsay Lohan And Sam Ronson "A Lovely Couple" Says Brother's Girlfriend

Lindsay Lohan has been linked to DJ Samantha Ronson for months, and now Sam's brother's girlfriend has gone on the record about the pair's relationship. Photos over the past few months have shown Lohan and Ronson in constant company, holding hands and kissing.

Now, the girlfriend of Sam's brother Mark (Grammy-winning producer of acts like Amy Winehouse) has spoken to a British paper. Model Daisy Lowe, who has been dating Mark for about three months, told the Mirror: "I met Lindsay and Sam for the first time during the weekend before the Coachella festival. "Sam is an amazing girl. The four of us had a brilliant time - a real laugh."

And it seems that Daisy is also really taken with legendary party girl, Linds, 22. "Lindsay is really down to earth. Her and Sam make a lovely couple - they seem really happy. "Their relationship is totally genuine. And they're just so sweet together.

"Mark totally approves. But we're not going to double-date again - I mean, would you go on a date with your brother? It's just a bit weird and anyway they live in LA, so it's kinda difficult. "But I'd definitely love to see them again." Lowe, 19, was recently revealed to be the daughter of Gavin Rossdale

If Reese would be that demanding, inflexible and selfish that she would put up a fuss about Jake going to any tributes for Heath, she's very needy, and Jake should stand up to her. What on earth does he see in that? What's sad about it is it's going to be all for naught and backfire bigtime too - you can just see the handwriting on the wall.

I thought that Lindsay and Samantha made a cute couple from the pics I've seen, but I hesitated to comment because I thought it might be just another "career move". Good for them that it's genuine. :)

I have to ask this because Im really curious. Did anyone here have a problem with Reese putting her hand on Jakes ass with her children present? Im sure they didnt see it but still. I dont have kids but I thought it was really tacky. Am I just being a prude? Anyone with kids that can post their opinion on this?

Anonymous said...

The entire relationship I find tacky, so I don't know, but especially with all the holier-than-thou "rules" and supposed concern for the kids, it's a little incongruous, yes. It's also unimaginative, because it looks like a copy of the Rome pic, only he seems not to notice, and Reese's disembodied hand almost in in his pocket, the rest of her body is not close to him. :(

Jake needs to end this fiasco with Reese whether real of fake, I don't think he's happy. He doesn't need that! This relationship makes him very unlikeable.
I think his career would be solid even without Reese. He should lead a very private life with an unknown female or male, whatever he prefers (I think both) and be happy.

Anonymous said...

Is Jake's hair dirty in those pics or am I seeing things?

Anonymous said...

I think he'd have a very solid career without any extra "help" as well. I'm getting the impression that he does what people tell him without question - Heath managed his career himself, didn't he? There was something I read about him making his own career decisions.

Jake Gyllenhaal's House Rules

If you're Jake Gyllenhaal or any one of the several nosey parkers (like me) interested in the private lives of celebs, you've probably seen the so-called "relationship rules" allegedly imposed on him by girlfriend Reese Witherspoon. This scoop comes to us straight from Star Magazine, purveyors of some of the hardest hitting celebrity journalism available in your local grocery check-out aisle so, of course, it is probably true.

The supposed rules were apparently prompted by Jake's move into Reese's L.A. home and mainly focus on household etiquette -- no shoes inside, when to take out the trash, no feet on coffee tables (bummer) -- but also limit Jake from swearing in front of Witherspoon's young children.

But, this just in -- apparently Jake has some rules for Reese, too. And, as luck would have it, we managed to muscle Star and OK! out of the way to bring you the story first.

Jake's Rules for Reese

1. If I "accidentally" call you Kirsten, you'll answer without skipping a beat.

2. Never complain that I spend too much time with Lance Armstrong and Matthew McConaughey. I just can't quit them, okay?

3. If I hear the words "let's work together again," [Rendition] it's over.

4. I was Donnie Darko; you were Elle Woods. Act with all appropriate deference.

5. Birthday present: Bike shorts. Christmas present: Bike shorts. Spontaneous present: Bike capris. See where I'm going with this?

Perhaps you, too, are in possession of some of Jake's leaked rules. If so, share them below.

"12:08 The whole point of the Reeke fiasco is his career, he needs this fauxmance to look straight and get work."

I don't necessarily think it's faux, but I think they are pimping it out for image and career purpuses. I think Jake and Reese are very image obsessed. Jakey wants to be loved and admired. This fanboy and girl who visited him on set helped him get back the love of some fans, who dared to question his behaviour, in the BBM fandom. I don't say he's a bad guy, but he is a guy who puts himself first. Thinking about it, it's not that bad putting yourself and your interests first...

Reader's comment:

"Regarding rule #2:

During last year's UT-Ohio State game, my friend (who is a dead ringer for Lance Armstrong) and I were stuck in traffic near the UT stadium when we see two guys on bikes next to us waiting on the traffic light. All of a sudden we realized it was actually Lance himself. So my friend and I jumped out of the car and asked if we could take a picture with him. Lance said sure and his buddy agreed to take the picture. It wasn't until his buddy took off his helmet and sunglasses that we saw it was Jake Gyllenhaal taking our picture with Lance.

Jake seems like he is a decent guy, can't explain why he would want to hang out with Lance."

If Reese would be that demanding, inflexible and selfish that she would put up a fuss about Jake going to any tributes for Heath, she's very needy, and Jake should stand up to her.

This reminds me of the story about Reeke running into Natalie Portman in a restaurant and Reese leaving Jake talking to Natalie and going to sit down on her own.
I don't think she left two old friends to chat; I think she is insecure and selfish and wanted Jake to follow her, chop-chop.

Anonymous said...

Talk about bad manners, it just keeps adding up. They must make quite an imperious couple. :(

Anonymous said...

"If he says anything during a film promotion, I'm turning off the TV in midsentence on him."

You KNOW that Jake will eventually address the Heath issue during some print media feature that is being done because he has a film coming out. There's no other way now.

But he'll ignore it for a while longer first, to prove what a sensitive diva he is.

Barf!

Anonymous said...

There's only one way to address it, and that's to show up at the L.A. premiere, or some premiere. Unless the L.A. premiere has gone by.

Anonymous said...

I love the damage control in the WP; they've toned down the rules story quite a bit from the way it appeared originally, the way I saw it sounded like enlisting in the military.

Anonymous said...

^ there's also been a Chicago premiere but nothing is scheduled for LA.

Anonymous said...

1:23pm, I agree. WP tries to make it cute. Sorry, it's not. It's actually quite a vicious and sly attack.

And the Star didn't just pull the story out of its ass. The Jake-is-Reese's-bitch plotline is the prevailing attitude from Brooklyn to Brentwood.

Anonymous said...

The supposed rules were apparently prompted by Jake's move into Reese's L.A. home and mainly focus on household etiquette -- no shoes inside, when to take out the trash, no feet on coffee tables (bummer) -- but also limit Jake from swearing in front of Witherspoon's young children.

When you "rephrase" it like this, of course it sounds innocuous, and desirable - but the wording of the original story was belittling to Jake. I guess it's all in who your target audience is.

Anonymous said...

Guys he won't show up for any premiere and you all know it.

Anonymous said...

During last year's UT-Ohio State game...

Was Jake seen with Lance last year?

Anonymous said...

1:31 Of course we do.

Anonymous said...

That rules story, underneath the funny ha-ha cute, is demeaning to Jake.

Anonymous said...

I can't imagine Jake swearing like a sailor, ever. He seems quite refined, and wouldn't need that much housebreaking IMO. Maybe an occasional slip up. The WP story conveniently left out the fact that if he does, he's got to "apologize" as in yes dear, whatever you say dear. What is offensive about it is it's yet another belittling story in a series of them that have him coming in second to Reese, let's not sugar coat it.

And yes, I haven't given up on hoping he'll show up somewhere in the world and say something sincere for Heath.

Anonymous said...

^^In fact, it sounds like just another horrible attempt to butch him up, implying that he swears like a sailor and needs his manners brushed up. It's ridiculous!

Anonymous said...

It's probably unfair of me for thinking so, but when I see Jake with Ava and Deacon I feel sad for Matilda. Ava and her brother have a very involved dad, Matilda has no father. When I saw Michelle and Matilda with one of Heath's old friends, I wondered if Jake ever spends time with the little girl. I'm sure Michelle wouldn't mind since Jake himself said the three, H, M and J, are very close, he's also the Godfather. But is seems he is too busy with his new family and maybe doesn't want them to feel jealous when he spends time with another family.

Anonymous said...

Give us a break, what new family?

Anonymous said...

I wonder the same sometimes.

Anonymous said...

When some day he breaks up with Reese, and it'll happen, he'll regret his behaviour. I'm sure of it.

Anonymous said...

Jake isn't dating Reese and doesn't have a new family, but PR arrangements and contracts are serious matter in Hollywood.

Anonymous said...

Do you remember the Reeke stunt from March or April when Ryan Phillipe's film came out, a film with his barely post-pubescent girlfriend Abby? Remember the US Weekly Reeke blitz that same weekend, ruthless, viciously and carefully timed, no doubt, to draw attention away from Reese's ex-husband and his ex-mistress? Reeke took a well-publicized 'vacation' to Cabo, and there was some talk about a jointly owned love nest near the beach, all of which was untrue?

Something about the current Reeke blitz reminds me of the Cabo stunt. Is it possible - and I hope and pray that I'm wrong - that Jake planned this Paris stunt in order to draw attention away from Maggie and Heath's film? Is Paris for Jake what Cabo turned out to be for Reese?

Everyone knows that Reese is a manipulative, semi-sociopath when it comes to revenge and control, but I've always believed that Jake was a decent, well-adjusted, non-vicious guy. Has Jake sunken so low that he is now using the gutter press to work out his petty professional jealousies and take vicious snipes at family members?

I really want someone to convince me that I'm wrong. Please.

Anonymous said...

I think Jake is a wimp and Reese is a very controlling woman. He does everything she wants. I think it's as simple as that. My uncle is exactly the same. When he bought me a bracelet for my birthday I think his wife feaked and he had to buy their daughter somthing too. My aunt is a very spoiled woman. There are weird people in this world.

Anonymous said...

3:04, I know I think this is her entire doing and he just yaps to whatever she wants, like an obedient dog.

I don't think Jake is that smart to be that manipulative or Machiavellian.

Anonymous said...

He does everything she wants. I think it's as simple as that.

No, it ain’t.

Anonymous said...

Has Jake sunken so low that he is now using the gutter press to work out his petty professional jealousies and take vicious snipes at family members?

No. Jake would never hurt Maggie on purpose, she is too precious for him.

Anonymous said...

3:04 I thought something of the sort too but I don't believe he thought he could ever draw attention from Heath and Maggie (although the spotlight's not on her but she's in the movie too), I mean how could he? TDK and the Heath hype are absolutely huge.

The timing of the Bastille Day photo ops made me go hmm, on the other hand. His PR wasn’t going to allow the smallest indication that Jake was moping around alone during TDK premiere instead of having the best time with "his new family". The immediate release of the pics speaks volumes. I don't buy that his PR didn't realize how in poor taste they are considering his dead friend's and sister's movie premiere was taking place almost at the same time. But that didn't stop them, did it?

Anonymous said...

I'm sure Maggie knows and understands his reasons for not attending the premieres. They are very close and love each other very much and support each other. I don't think she cares too much that attending the premieres would be a tribute to Heath. The happiness of the members of the family comes first and what's best for them.

Anonymous said...

If Jake is indeed what I think he is, than it is the closet that destroyed him, not just Reese, because the closet has reduced his non-industry life to a shadow of what it used to be (thank god that Chris is still around), forced him to distance himself from his family, poisoned his relationship with the gay community *and* the respectable press, and transformed him into a pathetic, closeted queen with way 'too many secrets', as Ted would say. As far as I'm concerned, his professional credibility has plummeted.

Given his mendacious behavior of late, and his poor box office performance, maybe we should write him off like a bad penny. As a fellow queer, I hate to let a suffering brethren go, but he really does consume way too much bandwidth.

"I'm sure Maggie knows and understands his reasons for not attending the premieres. They are very close and love each other very much and support each other."

I don't think that it's wide to create a romantic, rosy image of the Gyllenhaal family. I think that Jake's bearding campaign has soured *all* of his relationships with family, friends and colleagues; his family is not immune from the stink.

Think about it : Jake is off cavorting with Reese rather than being with his family when his grandmother dies; when Jake goes to New York, with Reese of course, Maggie and Mom are, ever so coincidentally, not there; Jake doesn't attend his sister's premier; he spends more time on the cover of gutter mags than on the set acting. And we won't even talk about the Nailed fiasco, which was probably a lot of bad karma coming back to bite him in the ass.

I think that these events have created tension in that family. This charade is dragging the family name through the mud, and the family is trying to protect itself. I wouldn't be surprised if Maggie told Jake that he could come to the premier alone but not with Reese because she didn't want anything to mar her big premier, and Jake, the pathetic, vicious, simpering closet queen that he's become, not only refused to attend, but staged this US Weekly stunt to spite his sister. If he is what I think he is, he is perfectly capable of it.

His family be damned.

For the rest of the summer, I'll just use my anti-Reeke zen meditation : "Edible Island, Edible Island, Edible Island, Edible Island....." Maybe the spirit of Jack Twist is wandering around Martha's Vineyard rather than Paris.

Anonymous said...

I don't think so. Bearding and PR stunts are part of Hollywood, nothing new under the sun.

Jake's family might not like the bearding deal but you don't stop loving and supporting your son or brother just because he made a bad business decision.

Or taken their non-vacation earlier, or taken their vacation without giving their itinerary to every gutter magazine in the western world, or even, perish the thought, not taken a vacation at all considering how much acting they (especially Reese) *haven't* done in the past few months. Or how about this - Jake takes a vacation with his family in Martha's Vineyard, away from the gutter press. No, this year's bearding collaboration decide to take a *well-publicized* hiatus the same weekend as the premier of TDK, Maggie's biggest film to date.

Yeah, a coincidence alright. If you believe that, than there's a bridge in New York that I'd like to sell you for $10.

Anonymous said...

It was the coincidence. Jake didn't plan or decide when PoP pre-production will start or end.

Anonymous said...

Reese was in Paris for a photo shoot for a magazine. Of course Jake(who is on vacation) and the kids went with her. He could have easily gone to the premiere of his sister's and Heath's film, but he chose to spend time with Reese and the kids instead.

POLICE have charged Heath Ledger's uncle and another man with stealing three bobcats worth $137,000 from businesses in Lockridge and Osborne Park.

One of the bobcats was stolen from a Sturtridge Rd building site in Lockridge on June 1 and the other two units disappeared from a contractor’s yard on Collingwood St, Osborne Park, on July 6. Early yesterday morning Ballajura Police on patrol in Malaga spotted a man asleep in the driver’s seat of a truck parked outside a machinery sales office in Trade Rd.

Motor Squad Detectives later executed a search warrant at the business and recovered three skid steer loaders (bobcats) along with a tomahawk and a quantity of drugs from the driver. Officers charged Philip Harold Saunders, 40, with stealing, possessing a weapon and possession of methylamphetamine. He appeared in the Perth Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Haydn Charles Ledger, 55, of Woodbridge was charged with stealing and receiving stolen goods and will face the Midland Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Now Jake goes underground in Morocco. You won't see him for a couple of months. What will you all do with Jake to kick around.

Anonymous said...

5:02pm, you're right.

Jake's PoP shooting schedule is not being made in relation to external events at this point, but for stars at Reeke's level, outings that produce well composed "chance" photos are always planned. There is no spontaneity.

Whatever they do behind closed doors (play Scrabble?), Reeke are posing, calculating, and selling themselves in public at all times, every time.

People keep forgetting that Ryan LEFT Reese for a younger woman. Reese got dumped. A lot of the public stuff that's happened since then is damage control and PR power plays by an angry, image-obsessed ex-wife. Jake is a willing participant. Conveniently, he has been her toyboy/proof of desirability since the day Ryan left.

Sly Ted placed his comment "Guess if you’re pissed at your sis, there’s never a pap too far away to listen to your rant" in the proximity of Jake and Maggie. Jake/Reeke ARE competing to win the public's attention just as Maggie is involved in the biggest movie of her life. Don't kid yourself, they could have stayed out of sight very very easily.

"Sources" keep saying Jake's family love Reese and are thrilled he's with her. That's defensive and means a lot of people still don't like the coupling. Who knows what the Gyllenhaals really think, but you know that in high school, Maggie would never have been friends with a cheerleader and debutant. Mags would have been busy going to Truffaut films and drinking dirty martinis.

I wonder if US magazine paid for the Paris trip since Reeke worked so hard to give them so many photo ops. It's to bad that after all that hard work, no one will care. Reeke will be competing with Angelina Jolie and her twins. I'm sure the Jolie twins win hands down. But, someone did say that the article ends with something along the lines of time will tell if work and distance will tear them apart. Maybe planting the seeds for a future break-up?
10:36, ITA with you. The whole Jake's family loves Reese-she's exactly who they want him to be with-is most likely BS. It's pretty apparent that Jake hasn't seen Maggie, Peter and Ramona in months. He's in LA, she's in NYC. He's in NYC, she's in Paris. She's in London, he's in LA. I also can't imagine Maggie being all chummy with Reese. They have nothing in common.
