Two years of Waiting for Toothy

Dany decided to close down Waiting for Toothy.
Thanks for the ride Dany, it’s been fun. Good luck!

Waiting for Toothy came about as a venting of sorts. I wanted a "safe" place to discuss the possibility that Jake Gyllenhaal may not be completely straight and may be or- at one point- was dating actor Austin Nichols. The idea came to me after a fellow IMDb poster created a Jake blog. In the beginning, I didn't actually want a Jake blog per se but more of a collective blog of Toothy Tile referrences and ambiguos quotes by Jake. However, such is life, the blog evolved into an all out Jake Gyllenhaal (and Austin Nichols) blog. Which turned out to not be a bad thing.

It is my feeling that endeavors borne of anger often will die in anger. Perhaps this is true. But I am not angry today - the day I say goodbye to you all. Yes, Waiting for Toothy started out of anger, but it is not ending in anger – at least not completely. This has been a ride for me. Bitter. Sweet. Sad. Happy. There are so many adjectives that describe my experience manning Waiting for Toothy. Name any, and I can probably relate. What I am feeling today is sadness and relief. Waiting for Toothy has died today, and I am mourning. If I had to assign WFT a pronoun, I would call it a he. He was beautiful, kind, caring, smart, sexy, and socially aware. He was also a bit too sensitive, eager, over-ambitious by taking on things out of his control (such as others’ thoughts of him), maybe even a little naïve.

But he stood for something, even if in the end it was perceived futile. Even as he was dying, he tried. He would say to me, “Give it another go, girl. Don’t give up just yet.” The hope of a dying man. I didn’t have it in my heart to tell him things were not looking good, so I kept trying to please him, pretending it was still fun. But the dying know when you’re comforting them, giving them sunshine in their darkness. In January, he finally said, “I am suffering.” We were teary, because we both knew in a short time I’d have to pull the plug. I am letting him go today. Tonight, we mourn.

Now maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it's not complaint you hear tonight
And it's not some pilgrim who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.

Heath Ledger — New Joker Pics

Here are two brand new pictures of the late Heath Ledger as The Joker in the upcoming The Dark Knight, thanks to The Sun.

The brand spankin’ new snaps show The Joker dressed as a deadly doctor and a creepy cop.

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight opens everywhere on July 25. The film also co-starrs Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine.

"Heath was a complex, troubled man, plagued by fear and an unexplored penchant for bisexuality. In retrospect, he was cast perfectly as Ennis."

An unexplored penchant for bisexuality?? Really? If this is true, I wonder if it's going to come out.

Did he do Jake?

9:43 AM quote is poster's opinion (previous post comment).

"Did he do Jake?"

Yes, it's just my opinion, but my intuitions on these matters are usualy correct. And in answer to the question, I don' know, but I doubt it. Did he consider it? Perhaps, between medications.

At least Jake is handling this issue non-medically, although it appears that his current drug of choice is bearding. The Cabo trip really exposes the manipulative underside of Reeke, Inc. I have a feeling that it's left a bad taste even in the mouths of the JIS-ers (ie. Jake is straight). If these two are capable of such blatant, vicious manipulation now, how much deception have they engaged in previously?

What a mess. To paraphrase a drag queen, "there's no jelly for this"!

Working Together

JG: Heath and I trusted each other enough to take risks. It was wonderful creating an intimacy with him. He made me feel comfortable; he made me want to be present, and that's the best thing you can ask for from someone you're acting with.

HL: It was great working with Jake. He was a very brave and talented actor to work with. I had fear going into it, but that was all the more reason to do it; it was exhilarating when I committed to the movie. Michelle's ability to dive deep within her soul never ceased to amaze me. She's a brilliant actress.

"I'm not sure how true this is, I've heard a lot of rumors about Heath (and Jake) but the rumor was that during the early days of the Brokeback Mountain shoot, Heath and Jake used to sneak off the set and check into motels using funny names in Calgary. When Ang found out about it, he put a stop to it (although I'm not sure why he would do that--but that was the rumor). Then Jake went off for two weeks to do promotion for "The Day after Tomorrow." When he came back, Heath and Michelle were already a couple.

Another rumor I had heard about Heath (and this was last year) was that his bi/gay instincts were working overtime. When he was in LA, he was fond of using male escorts (always young) to service him. Again, I'm not sure of the accuracy because of the source but that's what he/she (who claimed to be in the know) told me.

About Heath/Jake: Supposedly, Jake had been avoiding Heath the last year or so because of Heath's escalating drug use. Heath used to blame the influence of Jake's friends (particularly one friend who the Jake trolls detest--I won't even mention his name--but supposedly Heath would complain about Jake blowing him off and refer to this one person as a "fucking extra"). Anyway, supposedly, Jake was also in a fragile state last summer and finally hooked up with Heath a few times last summer. I have no idea if there were drugs or sex involved but this was Heath, so probably one or both were.

Heath also used to call up Jake frequently (again, I'm not sure if this is true or not) and invite him over to smoke pot (or take drugs) and participate in threesomes with either a boy hooker or a girl hooker. Supposedly, Jake did not particpate in this."

Anonymous said...

Where did you get that gossip? Which forum? LOL! I don't doubt Heath got a little wild but I always thought he genuinely liked (and was attracted to) women far more than Jake was (still is). I think he had a great rappor with women whereas Jake has a great rapport with men.

I always greatly suspected that Jake had a crush on Heath and Heath was aware of this but...maybe a little tense about it because he was with Michelle. I don't doubt that he knew Jake liked and was attracted to men but I don't see him ever making a judgment about that. Not at all.

I could definitely see Heath as bicurious though but I do think he really enjoyed and liked being in relationships with women.

As for Jake, I'm sorry but he and Reese have zero chemistry. And the pics of them in Mexico look like two girlfriends on vacation at Club Med.

Heath CARED more about the art form and acting in itself than Jake who seems to care more about being a movie star. If Jake cared and really applied himself, he could be really good. I don't think he's bad now but I think he tends toward laziness, which is sad because he does have potential and can be really good if he wants to be.

What I liked about Heath's and Jake's friendship during all the award season craziness back in 2005/2006 was that they seemed to forget everyone else around them when they were together, at least that's my impression I got from various clips and photos.
It was a pleasure to watch them together, unfortunately that won't happen ever again. :(

Friends Remember Heath Ledger on his 29th Birthday

As family and friends continue to try to come to grips with Heath Ledger's death in January, Friday marked what would have been the actor's 29th birthday.

"It was an honor to work with him, and I think that he'll always be in people's thoughts," Ledger's Brokeback Mountain costar Kate Mara, who played his older daughter, told PEOPLE at a Beverly Hills event for the Kenneth Cole Awareness Fund. "I think he affected people that he'd never met before."

In Australia, the Ledger family kept a low profile, and there were no notices in the local papers in memoriam.

"It's just a day-by-day thing," says a family source when asked how the Ledgers would be remembering the actor on his birthday. "That's all a private family matter. It's got nothing to do with anyone else." A person called Karrakatta Cemetery in Perth, where the Ledgers have a family plot, wanting to lay flowers for Heath, but sources there tell PEOPLE that his ashes have not been interred.

Difficult to Grasp

A close friend of Ledger's from his hometown says the actor's death of an accidental overdose is still difficult to grasp. "I haven't come to terms with it," says the friend. "I'm just trying to get through it. It has really affected his friends." And how is his father, Kim, holding up? "He doesn't want to talk about it," the friend tells PEOPLE. "He's a tough guy but he's a private man as well."

Also keeping a low profile was Michelle Williams and 2-year-old daughter Matilda. Williams has kept busy in Boston, working on the film Shutter Island, based on the book.

Meanwhile, the DEA investigation into how Ledger obtained the powerful and addictive painkillers 0xycontin and Vicodin will likely take several more weeks, a DEA source tells PEOPLE.

"Agents are still conducting interviews and are trying to get the proper documents to interview more of Ledger's doctors," the source says.

Alas, while I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on Scorsese’s adaptation of Shazuko Endo’s Silence, it appears that another project has developed that will be filmed and released first:

"Shutter Island"… is an adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel that follows two U.S. marshals who are sent to a federal institution for the criminally insane located in Boston’s Outer Harbor to capture a violent female escapee. DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Michelle Williams are on board to star in the production, which is due to go before cameras in March.

Heigl Thwarted By Knight’s Gay Ways

Actress and needy fag hag Katherine Heigl doesn’t have the best gaydar. She admitted yesterday that she once tried to get on queer costar TR Knight’s lance and simply could not figure out why her woos weren’t working.

From the Heigl’s mouth:

When we were filming the pilot I was single and so was he and I kind of had my eye on him. I was getting nowhere and I was super-confused. I was like, ‘Hello? Do I have something hanging out of my nose? Why aren’t you paying any attention to me? Needless to say, it quickly became a friendship once he told me.

Knight’s homosexuality is now moot, of course, because Heigl’s now got husband Josh Kelley’s soul to harvest.

And they all lived happily ever after…

They absolutely were not close when Heath died.

Even if they were not close anymore, I still think it was disrespectful to go on a shopping tour in Soho with Reese just a few weeks after Heath's death. The lack of tribute I won't even mention, I now it's gotten old.

I remember when River Phoenix died, Keanu Reeves (his friend and co star in "My Own Private Idaho" and "I Love You To Death") was so devastated that he had to take some time off from filming Speed, he was totally devastated. And he said some really great things about River.

I'm a fan of Joaquin Phoenix too and I noticed there are no new paparazzi pictures of him ever since Heath died. I don't say it has anything to do with Heath, but I mention it because I know they were friends. I hope he's ok, the situation must remind him of River's death.

Oh god. Reese as Alma. Oy. Can you imagine her sucking off Heath's face or being in those bed scenes with Heath? Reese and Heath. There's a pair. (RIP Heath).

I agree with you about the lack of respect Jake showed Heath by going on that shopping/dining tour in Soho only a month after Heath died. He didn't want to say anything about Heath's death--fine. He doesn't have to. But the Soho thing was disgusting. I'll never forgive him for that. Never.
Not that he would care what I, as a non-entity, thinks. I'm a nobody. Only other A-listers and people of influence in Hollywood count.

I've always liked Keanu. TMZ has a photo of him what he looks like now and opposed to what he looked like when he was 28. He hasn't aged!! It's amazing. He still looks just as great.

It's a matter of fact he didn't pay tribute and went to a shopping tour with Reese in Soho shortly after Heath died. I happen to think it's tasteless and I have a right to say so. The thing with Reese, whatever it is, seemed to be more important than showing taste.
What does this have to do with Jake's acting abilities? I didn't say he wasn't a talented actor. He is!

You are very right about that, his behavior towards Heath's death was beyond dissrespectful. Kim Kardashian Knows How To Use Her Gays

Professional slag Kim Kardashian opened up to HX’s Brandon Voss this weekend and told him exactly why she loves the gays: we’re so handy!

My hair and makeup guys are the best… Everyone in life needs a gay friend because your boyfriend’s never threatened by him, you can hang out with him all the time, and you can change clothes in front of him. All my guy friends are gay. Gay men give me the best fashion advice, and nothing is better in life than shopping with your gay friends.

And we gays think there’s nothing better than propping up a broken girlfriend’s self-esteem and ensuring sartorial survival. Nothing.

Gays are so handy!

And my feeling is if that had been Heath cavorting/shopping/partying in Soho with Michelle or whomever only weeks after Jake had died there, Heath would have been crucified by the fans.

Definitely! Jake was much more popular within the BBM community than Heath. If Heath would have behaved that way, i'm pretty sure, the criticizm towards Jake would have been mild in comparison. I'd bet all my money on it!

Anonymous said...

Oh please I doubt Heath would have been crucified the way Jake has by the BBM fandom. And it has nothing to do with Jake being "prettier" or "idolized" than Heath. Jake's was put down a lot compared to Heath. So they both had their share of criticism. I don't think they felt that way about each other though. I think they were friends in whatever capacity that meant. I don't think they saw each other all the time or anything, seemed to live different lives, but they seemed to have a bond and respect.

Jake has been dumped on for being less of an actor, etc. Also Heath has never had the scrutiny Jake has. everything Jake does or says becomes an issue. Like you know if he is lying or not about his sexuality or relationships. None of us know anything yet people sure know how to make up judgments as to what they think is fact. You could have been lied to by gossip columnists too you know. I really doubt Heath would have been more criticized.

Anonymous said...

I remember during BBM promotion, evey word Heath said was analyzed and criticized, much more than Jake. Heath's SAG "performance" was criticized as being homophobic. But we all know now how uncomfortable he was doing these things. During a Candy press confo Heath was asked if he thought Clooney deserved the Oscar and he said yes. Heath didn't say he should get it. He was nervous like always and didn't really think about how what he said could be misunderstood. All of a sudden fans attacked Heath for hating on Jake. I followed the events from the very beginning. That's the truth!

Also Heath has never had the scrutiny Jake has. everything Jake does or says becomes an issue.

Exactly - because Jake was more popular within the BBM fandom.
BTW, the fandom supported and praised Jake's work too.

Hathaway's Boyfriend Arrested for Trying To Pass a Bad Check

Anne Hathaway's boyfriend Raffaelo Follieri has been arrested and charged with trying to pass a bad check, reportedly for around $250,000.

New York police spokesman Detective Martin Speechley confirms officers picked up and charged Follieri on Thursday, while TMZ.com reports the Italian property developer bounced a check worth $250,000. The Web site claims Follieri has since been released from custody and is working with police to sort what he claims is a misunderstanding.

Last year, U.S. supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle sued Follieri for allegedly squandering $1.3 million of his business money to support his lavish lifestyle. Follieri denied the accusation.

Ask the Flying Monkey!
March 11, 2008

Q: Some folks talk about how “brave” it is for straight actors to play gay roles. But is it really? What are they risking? — Vincent, Gainesville, FL

A: It depends. If you’re talking about a supporting gay role, a stage role, or a role in a small art house film, no, there’s no risk. Think Stanley Tucci in The Devil Wears Prada or Ryan Reynold’s recent turn in The Nines. I also don’t think Robin Williams or Patrick Swayze risked much by appearing in farces as broad as The Birdcage or To Woo Fong, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar.

But a lead gay role in a major studio picture or television show? I do think there’s a significant risk, even now, and I think actors, gay or straight, are "brave" to take these roles. Getting work in Hollywood as a lead actor is all about your “Q-rating,” or your supposedly-scientifically-determined “likeability” factor. The studios don’t pay these leading actors millions of dollars for their talent; it’s to capitalize on their perceived likeability. But if one-half the country thinks you’re an immoral pervert, then you might very well become a less valuable commodity in the eyes of the studios. So that’s what they’re risking. (Plain old homophobia on the part of producers and casting directors plays a part too.)

In the case of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath (moment of silence) Ledger, it turned out to be a good career move, because the critical reception to Brokeback Mountain was so overwhelmingly positive that it more than made up for any lessening of their “Q-rating” among the anti-gay bigots.

But Harry Hamlin has been quite upfront about the fact that he was on the verge of becoming a hot leading actor in Hollywood…until he starred in the poorly-received gay movie, Making Love. He claimed the phone absolutely stopped ringing, and I don’t think this is mere whining on his part (and I think it was true for co-star and total hottie Michael Ontkean too). Hamlin eventually worked his way back into stardom on television’s LA Law, but it was in spite of Making Love, not because of it.

That said, we’re long way from Making Love, and I don’t think the risks even for leading actors are anywhere near what they were back then. Even so, the producers of Queer as Folk and Brothers & Sisters have both reported there were plenty of Hollywood actors wouldn’t go near those prominent gay roles.

An old interview

The Heath Is On (2001)

Q: What types of films would you love to do?
A: Musicals, like those amazing ones with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. They're what made me want to do movies in the first place. Musicals transport us to other places, where actors can really play it up. I guess in some peoples eyes, guys dancing around can look queeny, but I think it's very, very cool.

Q: How good of an actor do you think you are?
A: I think I'm all right. I'm learning. With acting, there isn't any rule book. People try to write rule books on acting, but that's like trying to give someone a rule book on how to think, which they do in L.A. It's such a strange concept to try to make acting competitive, like with all the awards and all. How do you judge one performance against another? Would they give an award for Best Person of the Year? Like, we've looked around and you're the best person this year. I mean, why?

Q: So, I take it you're not too big on the Oscars.
A: At the end of the day, the Academy Awards are just a big ****ing show. I mean, who really gives a ****? It's only a big show because they drag in every star in the book, broadcast it all around the world and so it makes big bucks. Take away the TV show, the glitz and glam and none of the actors would show up. If the Oscars were just in some hotel with someone going, "Here's your award," it'd be like, "Fuck it." Who'd turn up?

What would all you Jaustin lovers do if the TT aka Jake BIs all were made up and the relationship with Reese was real? Since Ted seems to be the only "insider" who claims Jake is gay/bi. Is he more of an insider than Perez or Lainey?
Ted and Jake got plenty of attention because of TT. Could be a made up story that serves both well and they continue with it?
Isn't this a possibility?
I don't want to start a fight, I just want honest opionions, not just being called a troll.

Gay kiss in Grey's Anatomy

Question: Any idea how good or bad the upcoming episodes of Grey's Anatomy are? — Alistair

Ausiello: That depends. Does the sight of two extremely good-looking young men making out on your TV screen get you excited? If your answer is yes, then I guarantee you at least one of Grey's five post-strike episodes will be very good. According to my Seattle Grace mole, producers are looking for a pair of actors in their twenties to play gay soldiers in love. Interested thesps must be Caucasian, hot and be comfortable sharing a "very romantic kiss" with another dude.

Ledger's uncle dismisses 'love child' reports as 'absolutely berserk'

Washington, Apr 4: Heath Ledger's uncle has dismissed reports that the late actor fathered a secret "love child," branding the suggestions as "absolutely berserk." In a recent interview, Mike said that reports that the 'Brokeback Mountain' star may have fathered a love child when he was 17 have been blown out of proportion.

"All my brother Haydn said was that anything is possible, and from there, it just went absolutely berserk," Usmagazine.com quoted Mike as saying.

"Haydn was asked a question that wasn't directly related to the Heath issue: 'If someone was this age, could it be possible?' and Haydn said 'Anything is possible,' and that's it.

"His statement was absolutely taken out of context. Absolutely.

"At the end of the day, our thoughts are with the little girl in question, and we're not prepared to make any more comments at all," he added.

R-rated film gets G-rated description

When Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel come to town to film a movie, that’s kind of cool.

So what if that movie is about a receptionist who has a nail shot into her head “eliciting wild sexual urges” and meets a congressman who takes advantage of “her sex drive,” as The Hollywood Reporter described the film in November?

Not exactly the kind of stuff you tout to the Palmetto crowd.

“ ‘Nailed’ is a political satire in which Sammy Joyce (Biel) ... goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the ‘bizarrely injured’ and meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal),” is how the S.C. Department of Commerce described the movie in a news release last month.

The Commerce folks say they got the G-rated description straight from the production company.

Guess Jake and Jessica, on their own, are sexy enough for most folks.

Nailed could be R-rated?

That sounds promising - a lot of great comedies are R-rated: Revenge of the Nerds, There's Something About Mary, Risky Business, Scary Movie ... :)

One of America's most respected gay publications has accused Presidential candidate Barack Obama of disrespecting the "entire local LGBT press."

Last week Philadelphia Gay News published an wide-ranging interview with his rival for the Democratic nomination Senator Hillary Clinton, ahead of the Pennsylvania primary later this month.

In an Editorial Letter to Obama last week, PGN said that he has only spoken with the gay press twice.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Undercover Kitchen Job

Food enthusiast Jake Gyllenhaal once donned an apron and helped his chef friend prepare cuisine in a top New York restaurant - for four nights in a row.

The Day After Tomorrow star admits the undercover kitchen job wasn't planned- it was simply the only way he could catch up with his best pal. And far from reducing him to an exhausted wreck, Gyllenhaal describes his stint in the fast-paced restaurant industry as one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.

He says, "I've always loved cooking. My best friend is a chef and we've cooking together for years. I love food. A couple of years ago, I was in New York, and my friend was working in a restaurant there."

"Because he works such crazy hours, the only time I could hang out with him was when he was working. So I put on some chef's clothes and worked with him for four nights. It was the best time I'd had in a long time."

I read the article some days ago. There is also an article that says he loves strong women and the article said that's probably why he is with Reese.
But it's funny how they write his best bud is Chris, when so many seem to think it was Heath. I guess it was important to his PR to make it clear his best friend is Chris and not Heath. Interesting!

Strong woman? It's impossible not to love a strong woman! lol

Reese has good PR team, I hate to admit that.

Too bad that same PR reduced Jake to her image accessory.

Let's talk openly about Heath for a change.

He threw it all away. Every door was open for him after his amazing performance im BM. If it wasn't for his performance, the movie wouldn't have become what it became and it not only him, but other co-stars catapulted to the A list. "IMT" was well received and the first impressions I got from his Joker performance are positve. He had a beautiful daughter a blossoming career, possibly a new girlfriend.
I know he had depressions, but he certainly could have afforded a good therapist to help him through. I can't believe that non of his doctors suggested to him in addition to medication to make a therapy. His family and friends either didn't care or weren't very successul helping him. In the end it was his life, he was a grown up man, he should have done something to save his own live.
Family and friends will move on. He's gone forever with just 28. What a waste, what an idiot.

See, I don't agree with the "tough love" cocept. Every human being is an individual, you can't use one concept for everyone. I think Heath needed people to talk to him openly about his problems. If he couldn't have done it with fam or friends, then he should have consulted a doctor. In an interview on youtube when he was in Venice he talked about how ever since he was a little boy he kept things to himself. It was in italian, but someone was nice enough to translate it in the comments section.

Hey I know you may not think so but Heath was way more respected and sought for in HW than Jake (drug problems or not) and the fact that Heath's co-star in his most acclaimed movie acted like he never met him even worse like he was scum screwed up his already limping image even more. It's disturbing, I agree. But would Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Penn, real top of the line, Grade A actors pay tribute to Jake the way they did to Heath if Jake had passed unexpectedly and so young? I don't think so. Jake got lucky because of BBM, whose success can be directly attributed to Larry McMurtry/Diana Ossana, Annie Proulx, Ang Lee and of course, Heath.

Jake gave a decent performance in BBM because he is a decent actor, not overwhelmingly bad, not overwhelmingly good. Heath acted circles around Jake. That much remains very true. Still, I have a difficult time picturing any other actor in the role of Jack Twist. Jake played him fairly well and helped endear the role to me.

It's true that after BBM it was Jake who got the most attention. It was Jake who during the award season hung out with Clooney, Will Smith and other high profile stars. James Shamus was obviously far more fond of Jake. In an interview he said how annoyed he was that people said how brave Heath was for taking on the role in BBM, but he was kissing Jake G., how hard can that be. In fact media said that both were brave for taking on the role. It was Jake who was chosen as a nominee for best actor at the MTV awards, because they knew he was far more popular than Heath.
Heath, despite of getting the best reviews out of the cast, was always in the background.
I must admit I was very surprised about his colleague's reactions, the tribute and praises. I didn't expect it.
I think both Jake and Heath are talented actors, but I also think Jake got more attention because he is better looking.

You didn't expect it because you have no educated opinion about the art of the actor. I watched theatre and film actors for 30 years now --- with Heath I could see the genius right away.
Jake has yet a lot to learn.
He's far behind Ryan Gosling, for example.

I know about Moulin Rouge audition and music video directing, but I was surprised to hear this:

Q: What types of films would you love to do?

Heath: Musicals, like those amazing ones with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. They're what made me want to do movies in the first place. Musicals transport us to other places, where actors can really play it up. I guess in some peoples eyes, guys dancing around can look queeny, but I think it's very, very cool. (2001)

I do think there’s a significant risk, even now, and I think actors, gay or straight, are "brave" to take these roles.
...

Anonymous said...

3:37 I honestly think he wanted that. Jake however always seemed to like the spotlight and chase after it.

Maybe!

Anonymous said...

I think Heath was fine being in the background because being in the spotlight made him uncomfortable and obviously nervous. He loved acting for acting sake, whereas Jake seems more concerned with fame and the spotlight as opposed to the craft of acting, which is a shame because he has the potential to be really good, IF he wants to. And the jury is out if he wants to.

Heath and Jake had great chemistry in BBM. And I believe that because Heath was operating on such a high level of achievement, he, whether willingly or not, forced Jake to rise above his level and meet him on it--ditto for Ang Lee's direction. I think Jake had a hard time on that set not just because of the personal issues in his life (Kirsten breaking up with him) but because those two were forcing him to better himself and I think he did that.

I do think he was greatly underrated in the role of Jack Twist but I also think he can be very lazy and just play it safe, which will stand in his way if he wants to improve his work as an actor.

He needs to take risks--make wild choices like Heath did and like Ryan Gosling is doing--to make people in the industry take him seriously as a performer. Right now, they see him as a lucky pretty boy with family connections and an A-list gf. That's it.

So this has become another bash Jake board. What a surprise. And here you have some saying that Jake was praised or liked more. Now all of a sudden folks come out of the woodwork to just disregard everything about him. BBM would not have worked without both Heath AND Jake. Sorry but it was Jake who brought the romantic side to the relationship. Jack was the one who showed the love they shared and Jake gave his all in those intimate scenes. They both deserved praise and they both got it. It is sad to see Jake's work in BBM be so dismissed by his "fans". It's not about thinking he is perfect. It is about acknowledging what he gave to the movie. Plus he was great in Donnie Darko, the Good Girl, Jarhead and Zodiac. Some of you may not think so but there are some of us who do appreciate Jake's work as an actor.

“Screw Jake Gyllenhaal…or at Least His Lawyer.
April 7, 2008
I seem to be the second person associated with this site who doesn’t necessarily hold the legal community in high esteem.
The latest a-hole lawyer move comes against Adam Fogle over at The Palmetto Scoop.
Late last week Fogle got a tip about where the stars and director of Nailed are expected to lay their heads while filming in our fair Columbia.
At most it was neat tidbit to break up stories of county party chairmen suing their uncles.
Apparently, before Fogle finished clicking “Publish” on his post, a high-priced high-dollar attorney at a Beverly Hills law firm representing Jake Gyllenhaal decided to touch base with Jake’s new neighbors in the way of a “cease and desist” notice.
Mr. Richard D. Thompson or DICK Thompson wrote Fogle and opened with a “soft sell” and discussions of appreciation for Mr. Gyllenhaal’s privacy and security. Then he went in to “demand” mode — demanding that Fogle take down the post, remove any pictures and information included on The Scoop and/or any other site Fogle controls, and that he not post about Jake’s whereabouts while he’s in Columbia.
What the…?
Was DICK Thompson afraid that somebody would go Brokeback on his client?
Wait a minute. Is anyone else sensing a pattern? First there was Brokeback Mountain. Now there’s Nailed. Throw in an attorney named DICK Thompson. Hmmm.
Never mind.
Congratulations, Jake. You and DICK Thompson successfully scared a li’l ol’ South Carolina political blogger whose audience is more likely to believe that a Gyllenhaal is something you need to have examined by a doctor.

Revising history already are you? Heath had far away the most buzz from BBM. He was the one with the revelatory performance, the huge amount of critical praise, the constant talk about his realtionship with Michelle and their baby. He even had the controversies ie the water pistol thing in sydney. He was never in the background until he chose to be, which was as soon as the awards season had finished.

I must admit I was very surprised about his colleague's reactions, the tribute and praises. I didn't expect it.

How could this have been unexpected? He already had one hugely praised iconic performance under his belt and had lots of buzz about a future one. He was considered one of the great acting hopes. He obviously had lots of friends and admirers. It was a tradgedy to lose him when he was right on the cusp of so much more.

Gay actors and agents with their 10% at stake:

Things have certainly advanced since the early ’90s, when Craig Chester was dropped by his (gay) agent because he was openly gay, even though he’d just starred in the indie hit Swoon!

Barrowman came out officially in a 2004 interview approved by his openly gay agent, Gavin Barker. His previous agent lost points by saying Barrowman shouldn’t appear in public with his partner, Scott Gill. The real message? Maggie Gyllenhaal Toplining Australian Produced Film

The star of indie drama "Sherrybaby" Maggie Gyllenhaal has reportedly been signed to star in an Aussie-U.K. co-production drama film "South Solitary". Variety reported that the actress will be starring opposite English actor Paul Bettany in the romantic drama film.

According to Screen Daily News, the 30-year-old actress is set to portray a disgraced young woman. She will share the screen with the "Wimbledon" star as Bettany has been tapped to star as the other lead character, a shell-shocked soldier. In the film penned by Shirley Barrett, Gyllenhaal will act under the direction of Barrett.

"Solitary" follows the story of Bettany's character when he is recuperating in Tasmania. The lensing of the movie is expected to start sometime in 2008 and it will take place in a remote lighthouse off the coast of the Australian island state of Tasmania. The film is one of the 10 feature films to be partly funded by the Film Finance Corporation Australia.

Sorry, I have to post the whole article:

Ten things you didn't know about Brokeback Mountain

The Oscar-winning story of cowboy love Brokeback Mountain gets an 'outing' on TV One [New Zealand]this Sunday night. Here's a few facts about one of the most popular movie romances of all time.

1) The Brokeback Mountain of the title was named after the shape of the hill - has the same swayback curve as a brokeback horse or mule, which is swaybacked or sagging in the spine.

2) Reports from the set of the film say Heath Ledger almost broke Jake Gyllenhaal's nose during one of the passionate kissing scenes. Down, boy!

3) The film cost US$14 million to make, and grossed well over US$83 million in North America and over US$95 million abroad during its 133-day cinema run. This makes it the fifth-highest-grossing Western-themed movie, and eighth-highest-earning romantic drama.

4) Ledger has a nude scene in which he jumps into a lake. Director Ang Lee intended to edit any actual frontal nudity out of the film, but a sneaky paparazzo took photos of him with a digital camera. The photos appeared on the net and in some gossip magazines. The scene is included in the European version of the film, featuring Ledger and a stunt double for Gyllenhaal jumping into a lake from a rock.

5) Brokeback was banned from release in Chinese cinemas, with authorities there claiming that the audience would be too small to justify its release… yeah right! The movie later became freely available throughout China on copied DVD and video, and was very well received with reviews on Chinese radio, television, newspapers and magazines, despite the fact that homosexuality is still such a taboo subject there. Brokeback was also not officially shown in any Middle Eastern cinema except on a few screens in Lebanon.

6) While Brokeback isn't a CGI masterpiece like Lord of the Rings, it did require several visual effects to be added to original footage. The script called for about 2,500 sheep, but only 700 were on-set, so many more were added digitally. Also created by computer boffins were replacement skies, set additions, equipment erasures and even the hail in the hailstorm scene.

7) When Ledger was asked about any fear of being cast in Brokeback, he responded that he was not afraid of the role, but instead was concerned that he would not be 'mature enough as an actor' to do justice to the story. At first he was going to turn down the role of Ennis Del Mar, but his then girlfriend Naomi Watts encouraged him to take it.

8) After completion of the movie, Brokeback writer Annie Proulx sent both lead actors an original, autographed copy of her story. When she signed Jake's copy she wrote "To Jake...", but when she signed the copy for Heath, she accidentally wrote "To Ennis…" After continuing her personal message, she realized her mistake - but decided to leave it there. In a private screening later in Hollywood, she reflected that she left his signed copy that way because she felt Heath Ledger had embodied Ennis in every way she had wrote him.

9) A pair of shirts seen in the wardrobe the end of the film sold on eBay.com in February 2006 for US$101,100.51. The buyer was film historian and movie memorabilia collector Tom Gregory, who called the shirts "the ruby slippers of our time," and vowed he'd never separate them.

10) Heath Ledger would have turned 29 years old today, 4 April 2008. R.I.P.

I actually think Brothers and Nailed are pretty good projects. We will see!

Of course you all are cackling at this news from this homophobic blogger. Way to go folks. YOU are the hypocrites!! You make all sorts of excuses for your hatred and yes it is HATRED of the worst kind. You don't have to blindly agree with everything Jake does but your scapegoating of him is pathetic and narrowminded. You believe a gossip columnist who is using you for hits on his website. Making up crazy stories, like a baby, that don't even seem to have any basis in reality. Yet you hate Jake. Something seems really scary wrong with this picture. With "fans" like you Jake sure doesn't need enemies.

I am looking forward to Brothers and Nailed too, 9:01.

Calm down trolly!

Coming from someone who believes all pro-Reeke gossip columnists and tabloid fiction writers.
LOL!

People magazine reports that Jake was at Robert Downey's bithday party. Wasn't his birthday on April 4th the same day Heath had birthday? Must have been awkward!

Anonymous said...

Yes, birthday on April 4th.

PR People Magazine?
Then it must be true!

Robert and Jake are friends, why should it be made up he attended his birthday party? Makes no sense!

Both Jake and Reese were there:

"Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal, sharing an early breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien in Brentwood, Calif. Walking in with their arms around each other, the casually dressed pair shared a table for two in the back, ordering coffee, an omelette and fruit. The pair talked and traded sections of the Los Angeles Times at the table. Later that night, the couple was spotted again – this time at West Hollywood's Chateau Marmont where they celebrated Robert Downey Jr.'s 43rd birthday with Cameron Diaz, Gerard Butler, Ben Stiller and more.

Why would Jake feel awkward? Prolly didn't realize it was Heath's birthday too!

Maybe it's true, maybe not.
I'm just saying that People Magazine is PR tool.

Cruise Edits Himself Out Of Gay Bio

Legendarily straight Tom Cruise apparently can’t even handle being mentioned in a gay book! Former Village Person Randy Jones‘ new biography included an eighties-era anecdote involving him and Tom, but the actor’s people had it removed. How queer.

“Tom and I had the same management company at the time,” Jones told me at the new Bowery hot spot Antik. “I met him at a party Andy Warhol threw for Peter Gatien’s Limelight [nightclub offshoot] in Atlanta.”

To hear Jones tell the story, it was quite a party. But after calls went out to a spokeswoman and attorney for the Mission: Impossible star yesterday, the book’s editor assured me that Cruise’s name had been removed from the final version.

Great, now we’re forced to use our imagination!

I think he attended RDjr’s birthday party and why would he feel awkward? He doesn't seem to care about Heath at all. If he knew it’s his birthday which I bet he did he probably just shrugged and pulled a ‘Heath died’ one because life goes on, right?

Most journalists at least aspire to some version of the truth. Public relations, at best, aspires to a partial truth and, at worst, to outright fabrication.

But of course it does!

Don't forget that PR = half-truth business!

PR way to make something believable is to use half-truths. Jake and Robert are colleagues who like each other = no reason to question a bit of info about the birthday party.

I'm not claiming it didn’t happen. The point is that even without any other evidence no one would doubt it because it was Robert’s party.

Heath's memorial services - no reports about Jake, zero evidence, but it didn't stop People Magazine to (try to) change that with few sentences.

I am looking forward to Brothers and Nailed too, 9:01.

Brothers - the script is excellent so I expect at least a good movie.
Nailed - sounds interesting, could be great or total trash.

Brothers has potential but not with Natalie Portman as the female lead. She's a horrible, incompetent actress who has the animation of a wind-up doll.

"Filmed and screened in 2006 was Wong Kar-wai's road movie My Blueberry Nights. Portman won acclaim for her role as gambler Leslie:

“ It's not until Portman shows up that you'll find the sort of sizzle and sympathy Wong cooks up with ease in his best films.
Natalie Portman — Best Actress? Yup. For once she's not playing a waif or a child princess but a mature, full-bodied woman, probably a decade older than Portman is (25). She looks great, in a blond rinse and come-hither outfits, but she's not coasting on her looks; they are only accoutrements to Leslie's natural salesmanship. She uses her appeal to simultaneously flirt with and taunt the gambler across the table....But the memory we'll cherish is that of Portman's vibrancy, grittiness and ache, all performed with a virtuosa's easy assurance. She, not Jones, is the savory dish of movie magic in a mostly bland Blueberry Nights."

Who's the reviewer? There's an old saying: "Consider the source."

Portman is a dreadful actress and if she gives a good performance, then it's a rarity but then everyone experiences a rarity in his/her lifetime.

Natalie, Tobey and Jake are all mediocre actors. If you want to see a good movie you should watch the original Brothers.

Anonymous said...

It's only fair to wait and see USA Brothers first and then compare it with the "original".

Anonymous said...

To be fair Jake has a good eye for movies that in the end turn out to be critics darlings. I think Brothers will be good and Nailed has the potential to be brilliant!

Anonymous said...

Nailed and brilliant in the same sentence?

Now THAT'S brave! :)

3:07, Word. Natalie is no Connie Nielsen, who is terrific in the original. The two lead actors are quite wonderful too.

3:30 pm, surely you didn't see "Rendition," major floperoo, both critically and commercially. And I can't see a film with Jessica Biel as a critic's darling.

“Ashecliffe” star Michelle Williams and her 2-year-old daughter, Matilda (with late actor Heath Ledger), getting such a kick out of the Dan Zanes kids concert at Davis Square’s Somerville Theatre that she purchased tickets to the evening show and left them for pal and “Ashecliffe” costar Mark Ruffalo and his family to pick up. The co-stars - and their families - were also spotted taking in “Go, Diego, Go Live!” at The Opera House.

I'm glad Matilda had so much fun. She's such a sweet girl, I wish her all the best!
