Director Villeneuve gives you other things to ponder. He's made it so that each character looks exactly like the other (both men have beards). We have to figure out, in each scene, whom we're watching. We also are forced to reconsider earlier, visual information - a prologue that has one of them visiting some Kubrickian sex club. Which Gyllenhaal was that?
Of course, you can't look at a body-double movie without thinking of "Vertigo," and Villeneuve seems to have intentionally borrowed the movie's tamped-down pace.
But he has other influences - countryman David Cronenberg, who, of course, had his own body-double thriller ("Dead Ringers"), and whose knack for the creepy image finds expression here in the form of spiders crawling across the skyline of Toronto (itself made to feel chilly, soulless and foreboding).
What does it all mean?
Haven't a clue. The movie eschews the literal-minded conclusion of Villeneuve's other collaboration with Gyllenhaal ("Prisoners") for something more elusive.
