Music + Soul + Sex

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Last year, I made a big deal about Ricky Martin’s coming out.

Revisiting the blog piece today, I realize I was somehow evoking the spirit of the It Gets Better Project. And while I continue extremely critical of this campaign (for many reasons, not the least are its ageist and classist narratives), I do believe the visualization of imagined possibility is important. For the young boy who, like myself in my early teen years, finds himself living in rural México, seeing a public figure with pop culture prominence spanning a few decades might help in the process of imagining and/or visualizing what being a Brown man who loves other men might look like.

Later in the year, I wrote a piece titled “How Ricky Martin is Changing the Face of Latino Fatherhood,” based on Ricky and his two sons' (Valentino and Matteo) appearance on the cover of People En Español’s father’s day issue. Given People En Español’s circulation, the image of an openly gay Latino father and his children, would be in countless Latina/o supermarkets and living rooms. Yet again, the image of Ricky’s queer Latinidad was helping us imagine a more expansive Latinidad that includes more of us.

Musica+Alma+Sexo cover
With Ricky’s reemergence into the public light, we had the opportunity to see a queer Latino strike down racist stereotypes about inherent homophobia in our communities. Perhaps the best example was on The View when Ricky responded to Joy Behar’s suggestion that his culture kept him from coming out. In a moment that made him even more beautiful in my eyes, Ricky refuses to take the bait and simply states that people all over the world are struggling with their sexuality. (Thank you!)

This morning, Ricky's new album "Música + Alma + Sexo" hit stores and I typed faster than my queer fingers could to download it on iTunes. Refusing to shy away from the "sex" in sexuality by daring to have the word "Sexo" in the title of the album, I am excited to see where Ricky takes us as an openly queer historically sensual performer.

Watching two brown men in an affectionate embrace in the “Lo Mejor De Mi Vida Eres Tú” video, I’m pretty darn sure Ricky will continue to matter to me… and maybe a few other boys.

Oops, sorry 5:12 PM, you are right, the chin "was there", and they were "joined by another couple who brought their baby".

And for those who are denying they could be his kids, that would be a well thought out plan that Jake just might have for once.

Jake plans to come out? Or will hide and deny kids forever?

I added Reese in error, it was Jake and a couple with a child, Busy, Birdie and huby.

People magazine mentioned Jake and the chin. I'm sure the couple wasn't Busy and her family, "Reeke hangs out with another couple" sighting was most likely made up anyway.

Anonymous said...

P.S. But "the couple was there with a baby" = there was never a sighting of Jake with a little girl.

^^ Oh I get it. Busy and hubby secretely takes care of baby tile.
How nice of them. She's such a good friend to Jake and Austin to do that.
Will someone post the picture of her and baby, I know it's one of the baby tiles.
What a good cover for J and A.

Busy deserves a nice Christmas gift.

I must admit that I'm not crazy about Chris Colfer, something about him rubs me the wrong way.

I think he's very talented (especially since Glee is his first gig) and not in the closet like a lot of young actors. His storyline is the best part of Glee and he has done amazing work. His Golden Globe speech was wonderful.

Chris Colfer Wins Golden Globe

Anonymous said...

With all due respect, there is no way for Chris Colfer to hide in the closet.

Anonymous said...

Jim Parsons from Big Bang Theory doesn't agree.

Anonymous said...

What do you mean? There was time when Jim Parsons pretended to be heterosexual?

Anonymous said...

Has he ever said he was gay? Glass closet =/= being out.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Jim Parsons never said the words:

The Golden Globes 2011 were about as gay as an awards ceremony can get Sunday night, with plenty of queer winners across the TV and film categories.
...
Best actor in a TV comedy went to gay actor Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory, who mentioned his husband Todd without referring to him as his life partner.

Anonymous said...

Actors like Parsons and Bomer who live in glass closets aren't doing anything to change Hollywood's gay stigma or America and the rest of the world's views on gay entertainers. While we may know they are gay, those who do not keep up with celebrity gossip believe the lies.

That's why I applaud actors like Chris Colfer for not being ashamed of who he is.

It's interesting that these days you hear about more athletes coming out than actors. Hollywood has become more homophobic than the sports world.

Anonymous said...

While we may know they are gay, those who do not keep up with celebrity gossip believe the lies.

True.

destiny said...

What lies have Parsons or Bomer made? They've never bearded, they've never said "I'm straight", never said every man's job is to find a woman.

People who don't care about gossip may not know they're gay, but anyone who does follow gossip knows for sure because there are no lies. And unless someone is a complete idiot, anyone who has read any of Bomer's interviews in which he's been asked about the gay rumors has to know he is gay too.

We know for a fact that Adam Lambert wasn't allowed to talk about his personal life while he was on AI, but he made it clear he was gay. The same thing could be happening with Parsons and Bomer.

And yes, that is progress, especially in Bomer's case because he's the lead and playing a sexy character, not a comedian. USA had the balls to hire someone like Bomer, and with this being a success, maybe next time they will hire an openly gay actor, or Bomer will ease out completely in a couple of years.

But hey, go ahead and knock yourself out slagging on people who have the balls to live their lives honestly that 95% of the gay actors in HW don't have.

Anonymous said...

What lies have Parsons or Bomer made?

Same as all closeted gays - never mentioning that they have boyfriends and pretending to be straight.

Anonymous said...

We know for a fact that Adam Lambert wasn't allowed to talk about his personal life while he was on AI...

Nonsense. Adam could have said "Hi to my family and boyfriend in the public tonight" or something like that, but he knew that being openly gay wasn't good for business during AI.

Anonymous said...

But hey, go ahead and knock yourself out slagging on people who have the balls to live their lives honestly that 95% of the gay actors in HW don't have.

Matt Bomer is a closet case.

*confused* Why would August or any other month matter?

Because this rumor started right after some posters on OMG indicated that they thought Jake and Austin had another child born in August of last year. Evidence was presented which was persuasive that another baby might have arrived, then someone started posting that Austin's sister had a baby in August and that explains why Austin posted a twitpic of him with a onesie made for a baby 0-3 months. Unfortunately, this person who keeps pushing this theory, has never posted any evidence that Ashley had their baby in August.

Adam's mother gave an interview around the time that AI finished up in which she said that Adam as well as his family had to sign a contract agreeing not to talk about Adam's personal life without permission from AI.

So, since some here seem to think that what Bomer and Parsons are doing is not enough, and that he should just come all the way out, please tell me what leading actors working in films or television in dramas or romances are out. Not theater, not comedies, not character actors or actors in supporting roles.

And if you think that being as out as Bomer is is no big deal, and doesn't mean a thing, then how do you explain his losing the role in Superman a couple of years back because of his sexuality.

Bomer and Parsons are closeted Hollywood actors and just like Jake or Tom or John they are the part of the problem and are closeted for the same reasons - being openly gay is bad for business.

We don't know why Bomer didn't get the role - anyone could argue that Jake wasn't Superman or Batman because of his sexuality.

Jake didn't get Superman because he looked too "ethnic" which was code for too Jewish looking, that was the story floating around at the time from insiders posting on Awards daily, formally Oscarwatch at the time.

They used him to get Tobey into line with Spiderman 2 and Kiki was pushing Jake which pissed off Tobey.

He was too young for Batman.

The bit about Bomer losing Superman was a DL thread from 2007. I know you always have to take DL gossip with a big grain of salt, but I'm more inclined to believe something when it involves an actor who isn't known.

And the point of mentioning actors like Cruise is that the reason they get married is because of all the rumors about them, and because they know/think that the average movie goer is going to think they are straight as a result. It's not that getting married stops the rumors.

By the way, since you think what people like Bomer and Parsons are doing is so bad, what do you think of what Jake is doing?

Anonymous said...

If "everyone knows" Bomer and Parsons are gay, why don't they just say it? Why do you have to turn your head and squint at their interviews to understand they are saying they are gay?

Because the average person is going to think they are straight unless they say otherwise. "Everyone" knew Neil Patrick Harris was gay too but when he came out it was still shocking for a majority of the public.

That goes for Zach Quinto too. He's even dragging Jon Groff into the closet with him, making him sneak around like a stranger.

I don't hate these actors but I'm not going to praise them for living in glass closets. They can tell kids "it gets better" yet aren't brave enough to be OPENLY GAY role models for these kids?

Sad, sad, sad.

Anonymous said...

By the way, since you think what people like Bomer and Parsons are doing is so bad, what do you think of what Jake is doing?

There is such thing as being realistic, objective and fair.
We should always try to be fair and no one deserves to be praised for hiding in the closet and that is true for Bomer, Parsons, Jake and the rest of 100.000 closeted actors and celebrities.

Anonymous said...

He's even dragging Jon Groff into the closet with him, making him sneak around like a stranger.

DL gossip - Zach dumped him.

Sex life? We are talking about a parent cheating and no matter how old the children are, they are going to side with the scourned parent in this case Mama.

It makes sense to most people except people like you looking to make excuses for Papa because he sent yo an e-mail.

Not only did he cheat, but one of the skanks he cheated with was Cantara and her involvement in Jake's fandom while it was going on was the real nail in that marriage.

How embarrassing for Jake and Magie to find out that he was pandring to his fan to sell a few books of his shitty poetry.

Papa is estranged from his family in PA as well, except for one.

It's an honest question directed at the person who is complaining about people like Bomer.

And I didn't ask about happiness, but what you think of what Jake is doing? Is it wrong for Jake to beard and hide his sexuality? Is it wrong for Jake to do all of that to get high-paying roles?

Do you really see no difference between not talking about your life, and between pretending to be a stepdad to your beard's kids and doing tabloid covers with the headline "Family Vacation?"

I can't fault Stephen for cheating on Naomi--clearly that was a symptom of a marriage in ruins (or deteriorating).

Usually, cheating is a way for a bored husband (or wife or partner) to get the classic "little bit on the side." Novelty. When they get caught, it's because "the marriage was in shambles." It's very convenient. It sometimes starts out that way and can lead to something more, and if it survives when the novelty wears off or the bimbo/himbo starts making demands like the partner they were trying to escape from, it sometimes leads to something more, IMO, but let's not elevate it. :)

Men’s Journal - In the April Issue: Jake Gyllenhaal said...

rom Kevin Conley’s Jake Gyllenhaal — The Fittest Guy in Hollywood

-
Jake Gyllenhaal proves to be a man of his word, unfortunately. Yesterday he promised me a “really fucking hard climb,” and that’s what he’s engineering now, up and down Garbage Hill in Griffith Park,
then over to the Hollywood Hills for a second round
of ascents to Mulholland Drive. It starts out easy enough. As we zip over the flats along the 5 Freeway, portions of the ride spool by in bike-geek chitchat. I ask about his velodrome-style Look frame. “I’m not really a gearhead. With biking, the spirit of it is — whatever you can find. To be honest, I know nothing about my bikes. I know how to change a tire; I know how to fix my bike if need be. I just know none of the names.”

Then he leans left, veering off the park’s perimeter road, at the base of our climb. “From here on, there’s not much traffic,” he yells back, as if I’d been secretly longing to let it rip.

Jake Gyllenhaal is something of a cardio monster. You might not guess this at first glance. At 6 feet and about 180 pounds, the 30-year-old is visibly in shape, but he doesn’t sport the typical road-biker, my-body-fat-is-lower-than-your-mortgage-rate frame. For his past two action roles, as the title character in Prince of Persia last spring, and as Captain Colter Stevens in the new thriller Source Code, he’s cultivated more of a military build. But left to himself, what he likes to do is run or bike. Inevitably, though, he pushes hard, even too hard. He says he suffered shin splints before he started barefoot running. “I’ve had to teach myself to slow down a bit,” he confesses. “Because I get so into it, it becomes a real addiction. But it’s like a New Year’s resolution.”

“To exercise less?”

more said...

“To sit down and read a book. Life’s not a bike ride. I wouldn’t say exercise less, but sit with myself.” Good thing there’s the action-star loophole — Jake believes he can “sit with himself” while he’s running. “It’s not: ‘I’m having a shitty day and I’m going to go for a run,’ but ‘I’m having a shitty day and I’m going for a run and I’m going to try to work out what’s going on.’ Not just get my serotonin levels up and feel good. I’m going to think about things. And the only way you can do that is to slow the pace down.”

On this outing he’s got me to slow him down. As we start climbing, we settle into a compromise pace — Gyllenhaal alternately cycling ahead then slowing down to let me catch up. I cheat to the inside on every switchback, trying to catch up.

“If you stick to the yellow lines, it’s easier,” he says, watching me careen from one side to the other while he keeps riding in the center of the closed park road. “It’s steeper if you take the inside.” Partly to distract him, I ask if he has any more climbing advice. “I like to think of my toes as always moving forward,” he says. “Don’t push down. Try to even out the forces between pushing and pulling. Find a cadence and stay in it.” This works almost instantly; I close in on him and feel the way up the road getting easier. “Stay relaxed. You ever see the riders in the Tour de France getting up in the saddle? They’re not rocking from side to side. Their spines are loose, and they look like fish.” He stands on his pedals and turns to me. “When I start getting tense, I breathe out.” One arm at a time, he lets go of his handlebars and flicks his hands. “I carry a lot of tension in my hands, so I do this a lot.” Soon his advice starts to have a positive effect on his pace, too, and he shoots off up the road. I get close enough to ask why this route — three miles and change in distance and 800 vertical feet up to a peak above the Griffith Observatory — is called Garbage Hill. “I don’t know,” Gyllenhaal says. “I’ve heard it called Trash Truck Hill, too. Maybe there’s a dump somewhere around.” He shoots me a Lance-like glance over his shoulder. “Or maybe we just don’t let any garbage in here.” He chuckles and pedals out of sight around the next switchback.

For more from Jake Gyllenhaal, check out our April issue, on newsstands Friday.

LOL! This argument is too stupid for words.

Using your analogy: I can say that Austin has three wives - just because we haven't seen them, does that mean they don't exist?

Hair jokes were in no short supply at last night's Comedy Central roast of Donald Trump, but the quip that had the audience shocked was when CNN icon Larry King made fun of his former co-worker Anderson Cooper's sexuality.

Pretending he was still hosting his now-defunct talk show, King took calls from viewers throughout the country and then tossed to Anderson, whose '360' followed his 'Live' show every night for years.

"Anderson Cooper is coming up next. Let's see what SHE'S up to," Larry said to the packed house.

Anderson, who never talks about his sexuality in public, has been dealing with rumors about his love life ever since he become CNN's biggest star, but never before has a member of the CNN family poked fun at him in such a public way.

Even his good friend Kathy Griffin, who loves to tell tales about celebrities, refused to go there when she recently spoke with Howard Stern when he asked if the silver fox was gay.

"Larry meant no harm," a friend of the newsman tells me. "He was just having a little fun. Larry has huge respect for Anderson and couldn't care less who he chooses to sleep with."

Let's hope Anderson is laughing too. The roast airs March 15 on Comedy Central.

Jake Gyllenhaal Covers 'Men's Journal' April 2011 said...

Jake Gyllenhaal is the cover guy for Men’s Journal magazine’s April 2011 issue, on newsstands Friday (March 11)!

The 30-year-old Source Code actor talked about his fitness routines, from biking to barefoot running!

“I’ve had to teach myself to slow down a bit. Because I get so into it, it becomes a real addiction. But it’s like a New Year’s resolution - to sit down and read a book. Life’s not a bike ride. I wouldn’t say exercise less, but sit with myself,” Jake shared.

“It’s not: ‘I’m having a s—-y day and I’m going to go for a run,’ but ‘I’m having a shitty day and I’m going for a run and I’m going to try to work out what’s going on.’ Not just get my serotonin levels up and feel good. I’m going to think about things. And the only way you can do that is to slow the pace down,” Jake added.

Source Code is a well-made film from start to finish, and Jones is a rising star amongst directors. Gyllenhaal plays the role well, but there seems to be a growing, and somewhat unfair backlash against the actor of late. If you are not a fan, nothing he does will convince you otherwise, but if you like him or are just impartial, he turns in a solid and likable performance.

Perhaps the two most difficult — and best-executed — performances in the film rest with Farmiga and Monaghan. Farmiga plays Stevens’ contact, Carol Goodwin, and the role is a complex one. You know she is hiding something, and yet her duty takes precedence over her feelings. As the mystery unravels and the drama begins, Goodwin becomes more and more important to Stevens, and her role is vital to the climax of the film. The less said about what she does the better, but Farmiga takes a difficult role and handles it exactly right.

Monaghan has the difficult job of replaying the same role over and over. Her character of Christina is connected to the person that Stevens lives through, so each time he restarts the eight minutes, she is there repeating the same lines again and again. It isn’t until one of the later times you see her die—there is one moment in particular where she dies slowly, with a heartbroken and confused look on her face—that you realize that you are actually rooting for her. She is the ultimate victim in this movie, trapped to relive a tragedy again and again, but with no sense of anything bigger beyond her. Monaghan will likely receive less credit for her part in the film than Gyllenhaal, Farmiga or Jones, but she turns in a fantastic performance.

There is one notable flaw on the technical side, though. The music seems to be lifted from another movie at times, and just absent at others. It was apparent right away that the music felt off, and afterwards I did a little digging and read that the original composer, Clint Mansell, was forced to back out late in the process due to time constraints, and he was replaced by Chris P. Bacon. Last minute changes like these are never a good thing, and this one is no exception. You eventually tune the soundtrack out, but it stands out as being bad—or at least being off.

It is hard not to discuss the twists and turns of Source Code. Some people will love them while others won’t, but you can’t deny the film’s originality. The ending will also have people talking, and while I enjoyed it, many won’t be able to look past the scientific paradoxes and problems inherent in the nature of the logic it uses.

Jones has quickly made a name for himself as a director of science fiction, but his talents are well suited in character development regardless of the genre. He is at the beginning of his career, and odds are it will be a long and fruitful one. All the actors turn in solid performances which credits them and Jones both, and (with the exception of the music) the film handles a complex and original story exceedingly well.

If you are looking for an original movie with themes of mystery, drama and science fiction, then Source Code should be at the top of your list.

I noticed that too and mentioned it a few days ago on WFT 2.
I remember Jake used to be really respected as an actor, but in the last few years he is suddenly bad/mediocre for many? I even thought he did a fine job in PoP even though the movie itself had some problems.

The interest in Jake generally seemed to have declined. I've noticed on sites like JJB or ONTD there is not much interest in him in contrast to other young actors his age group that we mention here almost on a daily basis as well. ;)

I didn't like Jake in POP (yes, I finally saw it even though I vowed not to spend money on it, a friend gave me a copy of the dvd)--I thought he was miscast. I thought he was fine in LAOD and Brothers, although I thought they were both mediocre films.

I think the backlash against Jake has to do with all the Reeking, Swift and the tabloid covers. I think reviewers don't take actors seriously if they get all wrapped up in that kind of nonsense. The only ones who seem to be able to get away with that are Pitt and Jolie, and I think that is because, even though they manipulate their images and publicity, the interest in them is perceived as genuine, not manufactured.

And then there have been all the lifeless, same old same old interviews. He lost his charm and mystery.

I think a lot of film reviewers are probably aware of what goes on in the cultural world at large, and I think they are influenced by what they see and hear about stars and it influences their reviews.

I think many see and know Jake is a fraud.

Anonymous said...

Destiny, I know you'd like to believe the backlash is a direct result of the Reeking but I honestly don't believe the majority of the film geeks who review his movies care about any of that. It might have more to do with the movies he's recently made that, for whatever reason, the film geeks didn't like. I think it unfair he's getting the "backlash" for films that may have been directed poorly or a script that wasn't finely tuned. As an actor he's allowed, nay encouraged, to try different genres and not be boxed into one specific thing, such as "Indie boy". I've enjoyed watching his progression thus far, both the hits and the misses.

Anonymous said...

I agree, I think it's primarily the movie roles. He needs a Blue Valentine, something gritty and real and low budget, something he does to stretch his character acting to be viewed as serious about being an actor and not just a star. I think PoP was a big step backwards. It was cheezy, not cool. Green Lantern is cool. Lara Croft is cool. Prince of Persia is not cool.

His choice of girlfriends makes this even worse - more evidence that he cares more about being a star than an actor. I don't think most of the "general public" knew that Reese and Jake were fake, but a whole lot of people, mainstream people, knew the Taylor thing was a total manipulation and sham. It was so not subtle. People don't like to be manipulated. Or at least, they don't like to KNOW they are being manipulated.

Anonymous said...

ITA with the Jake backlash. How can you take a 29 year old man seriously that goes on apple picking dates with a girl who projects herself as a 16 year old princess? Last night ONTD had a post on Jake's Men's Journal cover. A large portion of the comments were saying how they couldn't take him seriously after the whole Swift thing and how desperate he was to pull a stunt like that for publicity. The other reason I think people don't take him serioiusly is that with all of these high profile, tabloid popular romances, the actress is so much more famous than him that he becomes an accessory to them. He wasn't with Swift long enough, but most definitely it happened with Reese. While I feel bad for him, Jake did this to himself. He's the one agreeing to the entire nine yards bearding and now he's dealing with the consequences. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes.

Ben Ripley’s screenplay gives Jones plenty of tension to work with, enough so that the director throws in aerial shots of the train and a few exterior scenes in train stations to relieve the audience of what amounts to a three-set movie -- the train, control station and a weird capsule where Gyllanhaal’s character retreats between episodes aboard the train.

In the end, filmgoers will either buy into the implausible events or not. Not helping in this matter is an ending that renders much of this nonsensical, one that strives for a “feel good” moment, but at the expense of too much logic flying out the window.

As a consequence, Source Code reminds you somewhat of an old B sci-fi’er where ideas trump VFX and sci-fi dazzle. The small nuances -- a spilled cup of coffee or a wallet left behind -- mean more than a fiery bomb or the unwieldy explanation behind this government experiment. The movie boils down to one character, acting under enormous pressures of space and time, racing to solve a mystery. In this case, that may be good enough.

The Bottom Line
Intriguing if unbelievable sci-fi piece that quicken the pulse even if you don’t completely buy into the set-up

What is thrilling and exciting and rewarding is that Jones proves that he's no one-trick pony. Source Code moves like a horse with rabies; sometimes it's ungainly, sometimes it's a bucking bronco, and sometimes it quiets down to catch its breath. There are missteps here that were not present in Moon: for one thing, there's probably too much narrative exposition at times, and a propensity for sentimentality is indulged to a greater degree than truly warranted. But not enough to derail the film. (Sorry, train metaphors are difficult to avoid entirely.)

What Source Code shares with Moon is an intelligent treatment of material that could have been, in lesser hands, a simple "boom bang" movie. The script, credited to Ben Ripley, structures the story as a puzzle, which is mind-bending at times and appears to leaves gaping holes at others. What appear to be loose threads, though, are eventually all woven up tightly, which help make the film feel contained within itself and wholly satisfying.

Frankly, "boom bang" movies are fine in their place. For viewers who want explosions and noting else, Source Code delivers thrills and chills. And for everyone else who'd like a bit more for their time and money, like food for thought and characters who act like human beings, Source Code satisfies those cravings as well.

“Source Code” seemed to be a mixed bag headed in. The trailer leads one to believe that the film has more of a cookie cutter outline than Duncan Jones’ previous film “Moon”. Then again, this is a Duncan Jones movie and “Moon” was phenomenal so I feel I owe him my attention for his sophomore outing. The film runs just over an hour and a half and the pace is tight. Those who have seen the trailer will find the opening scenes to be familiar, but this is fine. It ensures that we aren’t as confused as Capt. Stevens (though it may have been fun to be in the dark going in). Once we are informed what is going on and Colter is thrust back into Sean’s body, things begin to get interesting. Do yourself a favor and ignore the inevitable comparisons to “Groundhog Day”, there are no piano lessons or ice sculpting in this time manipulation flick. As viewers, we are looking at the passengers through Colter’s eyes – secretly judging each person based on the actions we observe. It is a game of trial and error that manages to entertain despite the repetitive nature of the events. The monotony is broken up as another mystery unfolds in the ‘real’ world. Why is Colter there? How did he get assigned to this mission? Can Jeffery Wright smile? These are all questions that will be answered – we just have to wait a little longer than eight minutes.

I was tempted to write this review right after I saw “Source Code” and am so glad that I didn’t. Walking out of the theater, I had positive vibes for the flick – I liked the characters, the film is entertaining and paced well, etc. After sitting on the movie for a day though, more questions began to pop up. I began to wonder about certain aspects of the film and how they may have played out. Duncan Jones has crafted a very subtle time travel movie that sticks with viewers long after the credits roll. It is a film that provokes thought in a way similar to “Primer”, but not nearly as deep. I am hopeful the ‘mainstream’ looking trailer will help this flick be seen by the many moviegoers who skipped “Moon”. If “Source Code” is not successful, I need to go back in time to spend eight minutes in some marketing executive’s body and help find this film an audience. It deserves your time.

Gyllenhaal is an entirely sympathetic lead in the film and he makes the process of discovery credible at every turn. Monaghan has a great character arc, eight minutes at a time, reacting to each new version of Gyllenhaal. It's a tricky thing, and the script by Ben Ripley makes several very smart decisions. There's a little bit of scientific set-up, just enough to give you permission to say, "Sure," but it's never overexplained. Instead, he keeps everything human scale and personal, and it's really sort of wonderful the way Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) reaches out to Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) and Christina (Monaghan), two very different women, to help him through what starts as a surreal experiment in time observation, not time travel. He can't change things, he's told. All he can do is figure out who the bomber is so they can be stopped before they do anything else. And watching him test the limitations of his eight-minute excursions is a big part of the fun of the film. It plays things straight, but with a health sense of humor about it.

Like "The Adjustment Bureau," this film is much sweeter than I would have imagined, and while the entire supporting cast, including Jeffrey Wright, Russell Peters, Michael Arden, and a number of well-cast but largely unknown people, all do a uniformly good job, it comes down to the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and the two ladies, and each of them has such a different presence. Farmiga is playing a role that is largely her reacting to a camera on her desk, in the same chair, just talking, while Monaghan is the one in the train with him, the one who pushes him to find out if he can, in fact, change what happens on that train after all.

There was some hubbub just before the Q&A for the film, when someone in the theater actually followed Gyllenhaal into a public restroom, then took a picture of him at the urinal. Gyllenhaal made the guy delete the picture and cops were indeed called to the theater, one of two such incidents I heard about happening tonight at the festival. Seems like everyone's a little rowdy as SXSW gets underway, but I hope that doesn't ruin the overall experience for the filmmakers, because it played beautifully in the room tonight. I think "Source Code" is accessible, charming, and breezy, a film that flies by, a movie movie, if you will. It left me smiling and satisfied, and when the closing credit ran revealing who voices Gyllenhaal's father for an off-camera role, I laughed out loud. Duncan Jones strikes me as a guy who's built for a long and solid career, a talented but unpretentious director, and with just two movies under his belt, he's already turning into someone you can count on, a welcome addition to the genre ranks.

"I think it's the right kind of a sci-fi for now," said Jones. "It's a bit of a thinking man's sci-fi film but more to it. It's a contemporary thriller."

Lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal says he was intrigued by the movie's concept from the moment he read the script.

"I loved the idea of someone in the middle of a situation, and they had to figure out the clues as they went along," said Gyllenhaal. "They were also going to save if they did, hundreds of thousands of people."

Of course there was backlash, because of Jake's famewhoring with his gfs/"gfs". No one likes famwhores. It almost ruined Affleck's career. The only popular famewhores are Brangelina for some unexplicable reason.
I'm mainly talking about what I read about Ms. Portman that put me really off and lessened my opinion about some of those regular posters. I wonder if they are as "courageous" sharing their racist opinions in real life or they are just hiding and show their true colors in front of a key board? I don't care what THEY say, I personally didn't dig "Reeke" and "Swiftenhaal" and it sure overshadowed his career. I hope Jake learned from his mistakes.

All of this would make for a very dull, shallow and pointless action movie. It’s a good thing then that Source Code isn’t that. Rather, the movie focuses on the characters.

On Colter’s feelings as he discovers what he is supposed to do, his frustration at being unable to save the people or even of talking to his father.

On Goodwin’s feelings as she begins to develop sympathy for Colter’s plight. Goodwin’s character shows the most development in the movie: she starts out as someone who might be a computer simulation, to the one who proves to have the most heart, the one who takes the greatest risk to do the right thing. For me, Goodwin was the movie’s main character.

On the project’s inventor’s almost monomanic ambition to see this through and prove himself, at any cost (to Colter). He’s the kind of person who you wouldn’t want to succeed, the one who you’d want to fail if that didn’t mean millions of people would die.

These three characters drive the movie, their journeys make the movie. They make Source Code an action movie with heart, where you don’t look for one-liners, but you feel for and with the characters.

The only one who doesn’t get to shine is Michelle Monaghan as Christine. That isn’t her fault, she does the best the script allows her to do, but that isn’t much: she suffers from being a romantic interest for the hero, whose existence is limited to eight repetitive minutes.

I’m afraid I can’t really say more about it, because it’s almost impossible to say more without spoilers. So suffice it to say that if you liked Inception, you’re likely to like Source Code: it is as clever as the much more expensive movie, but with much more heart.

With Source Code, Duncan Jones shows that Moon was not a fluke: he’s a director with brains and heart. Just like this movie.

Verdict: very recommended
